Biodiesel Production Facility

Complete multidisciplinary design for a biodiesel production facility. The plant had to produce various grades of biodiesel from multiple feedstock.

Sacré-Davey provided system development, design, detailed engineering, commissioning and start-up services for the 100 million gallon per year biodiesel plant and a 17 million gallon tank farm with deep-water port, rail yard and truck load facilities.

Engineering design, procurement and construction of a world-class biodiesel refinery and shipping terminal within an 11 month schedule.

The contractor was selected at the start of engineering, and was involved from the beginning in constructability reviews and procurement of all materials.

Engineering was performed on a “Just in Time” basis and supplied to the contractor as construction was underway.

Successful commissioning and start-up of the facility within one year of the start of detailed design.

Demonstration of plant capability to run at 120% of nameplate capacity.

Sacré-Davey provided mechanical engineering support services for various upgrades throughout the plant. These included, pumping and piping upgrades, pipe stress analysis, debottlenecking modifications, and general equipment installation.

Sacré-Davey worked with plant personnel, interfaced with engineering, operations and maintenance to evaluate problems, determine options, and provide corrective actions to accommodate modifications as required for these upgrades.

Typical projects included:

• Asphalt – emulsion mill charge/MC loading pumps and piping modifications.

Scope of Work:

• Installation of a new isomerate transfer pump.

• Design of portable pump skid for temporary production transfer.

• Wastewater Treatment – pump replacement and piping mods.

• CRU Pretreatment – piping redesign and pipe stress analysis.

Sacré-Davey provided a dedicated team to the refinery to work closely with plant planners, engineering, and operations to coordinate projects and provide accurate as-builts for engineering design.

Successful completion of hundreds of projects over a five year span with no effect on refinery operations and no lost-time accidents.

Conceptual, FEED, and detailed engineering for a 15 mmscfd gas plant in Turkey. The plant also produced 75 bbl/d condensate, 75 bbl/d water.

Scope of work included process, mechanical, electrical/ instrumentation/controls and civil/structural engineering for:

NorthRiver Midstream Inc. (previously Spectra Energy) is one of North America’s premier natural gas infrastructure companies serving three key links in the natural gas value chain: gathering and processing, transmission and storage, and distribution. NorthRiver ’s operations include approximately 3500 kms of transmission pipeline, as well as natural gas gathering and processing, natural gas liquids operations and local distribution assets.

For 13 years Sacré-Davey has been one of NorthRiver ’s preferred engineering service providers for critical ongoing capital support. Sacré-Davey has completed approximately 850 projects of varying sizes at 5 major gas plant facilities and multiple gathering, compression and power generation facilities across western Canada.

Past projects have included: Pipelines, compression, pumping, heaters, heat exchangers, coolers, condensers, energy efficiency upgrades, controls, utilities, water reuse, process towers, sulphur plants, environmental, structural, HAZOP, and Root Cause Failure Analysis services for Oil, Gas, LNG and NGL.

Due to the large number of facilities, their age, and modification over the years, the prioritization and organization of the tasks for efficient design and implementation were critical.

Sacré-Davey maintains a multidisciplinary team to work closely with the client and their contractors to group and prioritize projects and ensure that all code and design packages are complete and on time.

All budgeted work was completed safely and numerous complex, difficult to resolve items have been cost-effectively resolved. These included many critical safety and full plant operational projects that had to be completed at remote sites or under tight shutdown timing constraints.The projects were completed on schedule with an exemplary cost estimation record for several major shutdowns.

Terminal modifications including installation of a new higher-capacity condensate storage tank farm (four new tanks), new interconnecting piping and several new pipe racks, piping, and three condensate pumps.

Sacré-Davey ’s scope included engineering drawings and work packages for the demolition of obsolete equipment from the new tank farm area, civil/structural engineering drawings and work packages for the construction of a new tank farm, containment area and associated infrastructure, design for tender of new condensate tanks, pump specification, design of interconnecting piping (including five pipe racks and foundations), and upgrading of the fire protection system. Sacré-Davey ’s scope also included relocating the main power transformer, installing new MCC and DCS buildings outside the containment area, and design of electrical and controls systems for the new storage area.

• Maximizing the amount of new tankage possible with a high degree of flexibility for future operations on a highly constrained site.

• Removal of redundant existing equipment and safe ongoing operation during design and construction required significant design innovation and complex site and construction planning.

• Using a stage gate FEED, design and construction approach, several innovative design solutions were implemented.

• 65% more tankage capacity was installed by using deep foundation designs.

• Existing and new pipeline capacity, operational and safety constraints were cost effectively addressed.

• Project was brought in on time and budget.

• Code conflicts between existing equipment standards and new standards were safely and cost effectively resolved.

PROJECT TEAM EXPERIENCE

PROJECT MANAGERS

The initial training of Jean Corbeil is in structural engineering and his specific experience is in the field of building structures. However, throughout his career, he has been a leader in construction projects in areas as diverse as rail infrastructure, road and municipal works, and multi-residential housing projects. For approximately 16 years, he was a partner in a consulting engineering firm in Laval, where his personal practice was focused on project engineering in Nunavik, on cause expertise and damage estimation in files. insurance claims and construction-related litigation, as well as technical support in several lawsuits. In West Africa, he has gained extensive experience in railway projects in Senegal, as well as in management, design and procurement documentation for road and municipal works in Mali. In mining, his more recent African experience was as director of the Endeavor Gold Processing Plant Expansion Project in Tabakoto, Mali.

Denis Thibodeau is a civil engineer with over thirty years of experience. The projects he has carried out are diversified, both in terms of technical expertise and scope. Many of the projects have been conducted in remote areas, up to the Canadian high Arctic, and several of them dealt with environmental issues such as fuel supply, decontamination or alternate energy.

He has been involved in the design, construction and operation of all the fuel depots of the Federation of Cooperatives of Northern Quebec, the Government of Nunavut and mining companies active in the Arctic. Over the last twenty years, he took part in more than fifty projects, for which he was responsible for construction logistics or the installation of petroleum equipment, and for the management of civil engineering works, particularly those relating to contaminated soils. He has also performed a number of feasibility studies for alternate energy sources in Northern Villages, from micro-hydropower plant to wind turbines. Denis has developed a unique expertise in permafrost construction. He is one of the Canadian experts in this field and has successfully conducted several projects using different techniques ensuring the durability of works in the Arctic.

PROJECT MANAGERS

Monica has significant experience in civil engineering in the fields of environment, municipal infrastructure, water treatment and petrol installations. Her high degree of adaptability has given her the opportunity to work in several regions of Quebec, such as the Gaspe Peninsula, Quebec City, Montreal, the Quebec North Shore region and Nunavik (including remote mine sites), as project manager and as a resident site supervisor. Her experience in petrol installations is extensive – more than 20 years – as project manager and designer in a large number of projects such as new depots, upgrading and extensions of existing installations and distribution systems. She knows the applicable standards and regulations as well as logistics for remote sites. She also handles schedules and liaises with stakeholders, clients and contractors.

Marvin has over 35 years of heavy industrial experience, having worked in the Port, Marine, Materials Handling, Energy, Mining and other industries as Project Director, Project Manager/Engineer, Chief Engineer and Consultant for numerous clients in Canada, United States, Australia, Turkey, Africa and South America. In these roles, Marvin has overseen work and assisted clients with a variety of projects including concept, sales, detailed design, feasibility studies, financing reports, ROIs, budget preparation, scheduling, bid preparation, bid evaluations, contract administration, site supervision, commissioning and training of equipment and systems he was in charge of.

Paul is a mechanical engineer with 20 years’ experience in Oil and Gas pipelines and tank farms, Hydrogen and renewable energy systems, machine design and industrial integration. He has a demonstrated ability to lead design teams and motivate individuals to apply their strengths to achieving group goals. He uses strong communication and interpersonal skills to transition projects from concept through to successful implementation. Adept at preparing and delivering technical presentations, Paul uses sales abilities to develop proposals and negotiate contracts.

Nicolas has over 12 years’ experience in mechanical engineering, design, and product development in the automotive, manufacturing, and process industries. A registered Professional Engineer with APEGBC, Nicolas excels at problem solving, requirements and specifications development and technical communication. Nicolas also has experience in project management which complements his analytical skills to contribute to efficient project delivery.

Soheyl is a Senior Mechanical Engineer with over 20 years’ experience, and is the Manager of Sacré-Davey’s Mechanical Engineering Department. Soheyl has extensive experience performing engineering and project management responsibilities in the Oil & Gas sector. He is a registered professional engineer with EGBC, APEGA and APEGS. He has an extensive experience on performing pipe stress analysis and is well experienced in the preparation of equipment data sheets, technical reports and material requisitions. Soheyl has outstanding leadership, analytical and problem solving skills.

PROCESS ENGINEERS

Bernardo

Daniel Parker has 39 years experience in the engineering and construction of chemical plants, pulp & paper mills, and renewable energy projects worldwide. Mr. Parker has provided development services, engineering design and consulting for pulp & paper process design, optimization, and energy efficiency projects. His experience includes the development of mass-energy balances, process controls, and optimization studies for a wide variety of cellulosic based industries. He is also a member of the Washington State Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors, and has held this role as a regulator for the past 11 years. He holds degrees in both chemical and electrical engineering and is a licensed engineer in both the US and Canada.

Bernardo Flores has over 13 years’ experience in engineering and construction of chemical plants, food processing, and renewable energy projects worldwide. Mr. Flores is skilled in design, modelling and optimization of food processes and energy systems. He holds a degree in chemical engineering and is a licensed Professional Engineer in Washington (2010), Florida (2012), Missouri (2013), Georgia (2015), Minnesota (2016), Kansas (2017), Kentucky (2018), California (2018).

Sr. Civil/Structural Engineer

Peter is a senior engineer with over 30 years of experience in structural engineering. In addition to his structural design experience Peter has considerable experience in the design of bulk materials handling systems including conveyor systems, ship loaders and pedestrian bridges. Peter was the lead project structural engineer on a $90 million bulk materials handling project at Neptune Terminals in North Vancouver, which included several conveyor galleries and pedestrian access bridges. Peter is a hands-on engineer who can manage a project from inception through to start up.

Aaron has 14 years’ experience in the design, modification, and rehabilitation of Industrial, commercial, and institutional structures. He has design experience with steel, concrete and timber; including superstructure, substructure and foundations. Aaron has had a broad exposure to a wide spectrum of structural projects and he is confident in the role as Project Discipline Lead, Design Engineer, and Project Engineer. He also has extensive experience with field assessment, site-based roles, feasibility studies, and detailed design.

Joel’s key responsibilities include leading a team of Civil/Structural Engineers in various phases of project development starting with front-end engineering. As a senior engineer, he coordinates technical aspects of projects, interfacing with clients, architects, construction management, EPC contractors and other disciplines from preliminary engineering to detailed design to construction. His areas of expertise include engineering design, developing inputs for project cost estimating including preparation of tender documents, building and managing right sized project teams with the appropriate skills sets, and mentoring of junior engineers.

SDE DESIGNERS

Bruce Cranna has over 30 years combined experience as a civil and structural/mechanical engineering technologist. He has 15 years of experience in the design and construction of processing plants for the mining and chemical industries in Canada and the US and 12 years of experience in the design and construction of water and sewage treatment plants, pumping stations and subdivision services for the municipal sector throughout Western Canada. He also has 5 years of experience in the design and construction of rail to ship facilities for ports and midstream petroleum storage and pumping facilities.

Rene has 30 years of experience as a mechanical/structural drafting designer. He has 10 years of experience in designing processing plants, 15 years of bulk handling design for the mining and forestry industries in Canada and the US, and 5 years experience in design of railcar loading and unloading to ship terminal facilities. He also has 5 years of experience in process piping design for the pulp/paper and oil/gas industries.

Stefane Guèvremont is an electrical engineer with 10 years of experience in the industrial and sectors, particularly in remote areas such as Nunavik (Quebec Arctic, at 61.68oN), Suriname and Burkina Faso, in extreme conditions and demanding timelines. He led the commissioning of one 12MW Transformer and two 7MW grinders for Essakane Mining, in the Sahel desert of Burkina Faso, and has managed engineering teams in several other projects.

Joel is an accomplished Electrical & Instrumentation Engineer with over 12 years of experience in low and medium voltage power distribution, equipment installation, instrumentation, and building systems. He is experienced in a wide range of industries from oil and gas, to pulp and paper, to flow batteries and fuel cells. Hard-working and detail oriented with excellent problem solving skills, Joel has a proven ability to work independently or in multi-disciplinary teams.

Alma is a licensed Electrical Engineer with experience in power and instrumentation and controls design for industrial facilities. Working in multi-discipline teams consisting of architects and civil, process, structural, mechanical and electrical engineers to produce design drawings and specifications for construction for new facilities and upgrades to existing facilities. Ensures construction documents are in compliance with applicable national, state and local codes
