OUR 1559TH ISSUE 01.10.19 Some Republicans are still clutching their pearls over a remark made last week by newly elected Michigan Representative Rashida Tlaib. The Congresswoman, speaking to supporters at a small, raucous rally on the evening after she was sworn in, concluded some remarks about elections and bullies and the president by saying, “We’re going to impeach the mother------.”

Oh my stars and garters! Such language! We just can’t have that. It coarsens the public discourse.

I got news for ya, Goopers. The public discourse got crude when Donald Trump jumped into politics and started calling his primary opponents names and making fun of their physical characteristics. It got cruder when Trump was caught on tape talking about grabbing women’s genitalia. It got even cruder when we all learned about Trump’s affairs with a porn star, and when that porn star issued a description of the president’s, er, staff.

Now the Republicans are getting upset about crudeness? Listen to Trump at one of his rallies. Or read some of his tweets. They are a cornucopia of rudeness and crudeness.

(And ignorance and prevarication and bad spelling and typos, but I digress.)

The fact is, Trump’s supporters love his crudeness. They say he just “tells it like it is.” Fine. What goes around comes around. If a feisty new congresswoman drops the F-bomb, so be it. This new Congress is full of feisty women — and men — just itching to put a brake on the runaway Trump train. We’ll be seeing bills requiring presidential candidates to reveal their tax returns and to prevent presidents from being able to pardon themselves. The Democrats will be tackling voter suppression laws, heath care, gerrymandering, immigration reform, and climate change, to name just a few issues. That’s not to mention the multitude of forthcoming committee hearings Rashida on violations of the Tlaib emoluments clause, campaign finance shenanigans, and, yes, collusion with Russia.

The new Democrats look like America — men, women, brown, black, Asian, Muslim, queer, even trans. The Republicans look like white guys in suits, standing on the tilting deck of the USS Trump. I predict administration staffers will soon be hearing lots of F-bombs in the corridors of the White House.

And already, there is jockeying for position among Democrats to see who will win the party’s presidential nomination in 2020. (Here’s a free campaign slogan: “2020 Vision.”

You’re welcome.)

Elizabeth Warren was the first to make a move. I like Warren. And I like her focus on helping the middle- and working-class. But I also can’t help but see her as the latest in a long line of old Democratic stiffs — Al Gore, John Kerry, Hillary Clinton, i.e. — who seem irretrievably out of touch with common folks. I am tired of the East Coast Ivy League feeder chain that informs so many of our major institutions, especially the Senate and the Supreme Court.

Democrats need more candidates who aren’t millionaires, who know what it’s like to have to live on a paycheck rather than stock dividends. They need candidates who know what it’s like to deal with our health-care system, who understand the pain of paying an insurance “deductible” that’s the size of a month’s mortgage payment.

Democrats need to be the party of regular people — the job-havers, not the mostly mythical “job creators” worN E WS & O P I N I O N shipped by the GOP. But wouldn’t it be nice if local news outlets would stop making things seem even worse than they really are by constantly sharing and re-sharing stories about crime from other cities?

I can’t deny, if local TV stations made a resolution to stop doing this sort of thing, I would miss not being able to report that WMC TV-5 reported that a 61-year-old Green Bay, Wisconsin, man was arrested for tearing down his neighbor’s Christmas decorations while drunk and naked. But honestly, I won’t miss it that much.

A new legislative agenda, hopes go “under the dome,” and a new look for an old street.

COMPLETE UNION Union Avenue could be vastly different in the years ahead, as the city is planning to revamp the street through the Union Avenue Complete Streets Project.

Beginning with the segment of Union from Marshall Avenue to Manassas Street in the Medical District, the street will get improvements like street beautification, enhanced transit stops, heightened safety for pedestrians and cyclists, modernized traffic signals, and eco-friendly solutions to stormwater runoff.

WEED, TRUMP, & COPS Memphis Congressman Steve Cohen outlined his legislative agenda for the new Congress last week in a torrent of proposals that take aim at everything from infant mortality rates, medical marijuana, and criminal justice reform, to abolishing the Electoral College and curtailing presidential pardon power.

In one, he seeks the direct election of the United States President and Vice President, noting that in two elections since 2000, the winner of the popular vote did not win the overall election. In one that seems aimed at President Donald Trump, Cohen seeks to prohibit presidents from pardoning themselves, members of their families, members of their administrations, and their campaign staff.

Cohen wants more transparency in officer-related shootings, more body-worn cameras for police, a pilot program to fight infant mortality, easier access to polling locations, federal protections for those seeking medical marijuana in cannabis-legal states, and more.

OFFICER-INVOLED SHOOTING Memphis Police Department officers fatally shot a man who they said was armed with a knife in Whitehaven last week.

Special agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) are investigating the shooting and identified the deceased man as 20-year-old Abdoulaye Thiam.

The three MPD officers involved have been relieved of duty pending the ongoing investigation.

MAS BREAKS RECORD With the adoption of brother kittens, Rudy and Ricco, Memphis Animal Services (MAS) reached its goal of processing more than 7,000 adoptions and rescue transfers in 2018.

The agency also ended the year with an all-time high save rate of 88 percent, officials announced last week.

Though intakes increased by 8 percent over 2018, the agency’s year-end save rate was 88.2 percent — compared to 84.8 percent in 2017.

MAS saved 7,712 pets in 2018, as it processed 3,911 public adoptions, 3,172 rescue transfers, and reunited 629 lost pets. Euthanasia was down 21 percent as a result.

UNDER THE DOME The group advocating for a re-opened Mid-South Coliseum said last week it hopes to host events inside the nowshuttered building sometime this year.

The grassroots Coliseum Coalition began work to save the building in 2015. Last year, they proclaimed the Coliseum to be officially saved after state officials approved a city plan for the Fairgrounds, which included the building’s preservation. In between, the group led tours through the building to show that the building is in “excellent shape,” they said.

This year, the Coliseum Coalition plans to continue the tours and is planning another Roundhouse Revival event. So far, the group has hosted three of the Revival events, all of them outside the Coliseum.

But Coalition president Roy Barnes said that with the city’s Fairgrounds plan approved, he hopes this fall’s Revival event will be “under the dome.”

Shelby County officials said last week that a new state immigration law that went into effect on January 1st doesn’t apply here, invoking a disapproving response from some Tennessee GOP leaders.

The law prohibits local government entities from adopting sanctuary policies that interfere with the enforcement of federal immigration laws. This means local law enforcement agencies aren’t required to have a warrant or probable cause to comply with federal immigration detainers.

Lisa Sherman-Nikolaus, policy director at the Tennessee Immigration and Refugee Rights Coalition (TIRRC), who has called the law “one of the most extreme, anti-immigration laws in the country,” said that the group warned legislators that the measure puts local governments in “impossible positions.”

“Tennessee’s new ‘anti-sanctuary city’ law forces local governments to choose: violate the U.S. Constitution or violate the new state law,” ShermanNikolaus said. “If the Lieutenant Governor and the Speaker of the House are going to threaten Shelby County, the state should have to foot the bill when counties are inevitably sued for violating their residents’ fourth amendment rights.”

Sherman-Nikolaus adds that TIRRC applauds Shelby County for defending all residents’ constitutional rights.

Thus did George Chism exhort the supporters gathered around him last Wednesday for a meet-and-greet/ fund-raiser at the Bank of Bartlett branch on Highway 64. The reference

by Chism was somewhat obscure, since voting in the special-election primaries for the vacant District 32 state Senate seat, which he and four others are seeking, won’t end until primaryelection day on January 24th.

What former Shelby County Commissioner Chism apparently meant was that the climax of the special-election primary race would occur between January 14th, when ad hoc neighborhood voting sites became active, and January 23rd, election eve.

Chism, former state Representative Steve McManus, and former County Commissioner Heidi Shafer are competing for the Republican nomination for the seat vacated by former state Senate majority leader Mark Norris, a federal judge now, by appointment of President Trump. Meanwhile, the sole Democrat on the primary ballot, Eric Coleman, is assured of a chance to run against the GOP winner on the special general-election date of March 12th.

In any case and by any arithmetic, time is scarce, and all the candidates are hustling up multiple occasions to create or augment voter awareness of their identity and credentials. Chism claims among his supporters several of Shelby County’s suburban mayors, including Bartlett Mayor Keith McDonald, who was on hand for his fund-raiser. Also there was David Reaves, who, like Chism served a single term on the County Commission and, again like Chism, was something of an outlier there, dedicated, or so said both of them, to the gospel of fiscal solvency.

Like Chism and McManus, Shafer is unmistakably Republican in ideology, but her Commission service, both in 2018, when she served as the body’s chair, and beforehand as well, was marked by an obvious ability to work across the partisan aisle. She was the acknowledged leader of bipartisan efforts to mount the now ongoing legal effort both to curtail the ravages of opioid addiction in Shelby County and to compensate the county for damages caused by careless and unscrupulous over-prescription.

There was a bipartisan flavor, as well, to Shafer’s remarks at her Memphis event, at which she staked out positions for remedial action on both the education and health fronts. While not espousing previous Medicaid-expansion formulations as such, she made it clear that she would seek some means of remedying a circumstance whereby the state had not claimed its share of federal health-care funding, allowing it to go to other states by default.

Perhaps more than the other Republicans running, Shafer has a foothold in Tipton County, especially in the southern portion of it, a de facto bedroom suburb of Memphis. But she, like Chism and McManus, is aware of the vote-pulling power in Tipton County at large of a fourth Republican, Paul Rose of Covington. Rose, a businessman and a well-established presence in Tiption County, is a conservative who has emphasized his strong religious faith.

As of now, Rose is weaker than the others in Shelby County, but he would clearly stand to gain from anything resembling an even vote split between the other three.

Coleman, the sole Democrat running, is a business logistics specialist and evidently quite successful as such. He is an African American and a Navy veteran, severely wounded in the service of his country, and as such has a compelling backstory capable of winning him votes across party lines.

Coleman is not as hyper-active yet as the Republicans seeking the state Senate seat, but he has more time to develop his profile before testing it at the polls in March.

An act of simple kindness sets an example for all of us. she probably donated some more money.

What made me cry was when we asked her if she was sure that she wanted to donate her coat, she responded that she could buy another one like it for three dollars at the Goodwill store. With this simple line, a woman who didn’t have much was showing everyone that people only need to dress themselves with the humble clothes of humanity.

I’ve been thinking about her a lot since then. During this time we have seen almost 6,000 immigrants travel through the bus station. We have seen very high levels of need, from sick people to passengers without coats to five-year-old girls who were thrown out of detention into the cold without shoes or socks.

We have been able to do much more with the support received from friends, volunteers, and other organizations. Our donation room is a monument to the kindness shown by hundreds of people who have donated time, money, coats, coloring books, food, toiletries. But I still think about this woman and the simplicity with which she made a quick decision to put herself at the service of those who needed help around her.

As immigrants, sometimes we can overlook many things from the places we come to live in. It is true that this country seems a machine of industrialization, a monster that transforms into gold the needs, the tragedies, and misery of the people who live here and in the rest of the world. But there is also something in this place that is essential and humanizing: a well-grounded understanding of the personal responsibility we have toward other human beings. This is hard to see among so much abundance because, as happens with poverty, we tend not to see those who walk through our cities wearing simple rags of humanity.

Do yourself a favor and put on these simple clothes and start looking around and offering your hands — not just your tithes — so that you can accomplish the task of transforming this world into a much better one.

For the past seven weeks, I have had the privilege of working with a group of people of great compassion and dedication who have been putting their time and hands at the service of thousands of immigrants traveling through Memphis after seeking asylum. Five times a day, groups of these volunteers go to the bus station to offer food, water, clothes, over-the-counter medicines, and a toy or coloring book to families who come from detention centers near the southern border.

Twice a day, other groups of wonderful people are helping to prepare all these things. It is a truly humanizing experience to work with these volunteers and to be able to serve others whose first experience with the people of this country has been interacting with the border patrol agents and the staff of the detention centers.

But today I do not want to tell you about these people or the families we have met.

I would like to tell you about a person we met during this time and who represents a perfect example of something that is deeply human.

On my second shift at the station, around 4 in the morning, we were attending to the needs of the people who had arrived on the bus. When things had calmed down a little and everyone had some food and water, a lady of about 70, with a very soft voice, asked us what we were doing.

The other volunteer with me explained who these families were and why we were there, and that we were part of a group of volunteers who had asked for donations to have something to give them. A young African-American man who had been listening to us offered us money, after thanking us, and this woman, with utmost humility, took her foot out of her shoe and offered us $20. I still remember the gesture of my volunteer partner, knowing that probably this lady did not have much money, but also not wanting to deny her the opportunity to contribute what she could. She almost made me cry.

Four hours later, when we were waiting for another bus, the lady was still there waiting for hers, and she could see a new group of more than 25 people like the ones she had seen us help earlier. In the rush to bring them food, ask about their health, or see if we had some clothes to give to those feeling cold and wearing just a T-shirt or a shirt, we did not realize that the lady had already begun to interact on her own with the families. Then, we saw her donate the coat she was wearing (it was cold that week) and donate one of her handbags to a family that had no place to put their few belongings. She donated two Bibles, clearly used by herself. And

New Year, New You Nine ways to transform your life in 2019!

New Year’s Day is arbitrary, a conceptual restart created by the ancients to note the beginning of another trip around the sun.

The new year could just as easily start at the summer solstice, since we never stop rotating around the sun, but somehow, the winter solstice got the gig.

January 10-16, 2019

Through the eons, the beginning of a new year has become linked to human beings wanting to start over, to reinvent themselves, to change and improve their approach to living. This is not a bad instinct. We could all use a fresh approach now and then. Every new year serves as a reminder that we only get a limited number of trips around the sun, so we should make the most of our upcoming trip. Which is one reason why the ancients invented the Memphis Flyer’s annual New Year, New You issue. So, read on. Maybe some of these varied suggestions will help you trip the restart switch. Think of it as a gentle wake-up call.

GET A LIFE (COACH)

You’re caught in a trap. You can’t get out.

And, no, it’s not because I love you too much, baby.

“Usually, when people come to me, it’s because they’re stuck,” says Jen Frank, a professional life coach. “There’s something they might want, but they can’t move 10 forward or they might feel a lack of clarity about the path they’re on. There’s just

something that they haven’t been able to figure out by themselves.”

But Frank doesn’t give advice, won’t tell people what to do. She is not your therapist. “Therapy is really about past issues or past trauma,” she says. “Coaching acknowledges that those things happened but rather than go backward, it’s about recognizing how we’re going to get past it.”

Frank does life, career, and executive coaching, both individually and in groups.

It usually takes from 10 to 12 weeks.

Frank says that life and career coaching are ultimately the same thing. “Whatever that’s not working, it’s showing up in relationships at home and relationships at work. You’re a whole person. It overlaps.”

Frank begins by asking questions. “I ask them what prompted them to call me.

We talk a little bit about where they want to get to,” she says.

They then work through exercises, which may involve drawing and storytelling. This is part of what she calls a values exercise. “If you want to learn about somebody, have them tell you a story about a time when they were proud.” Frank describes her visioning exercise as sort of like meditation, where the subconscious meets the conscious.

She’ll have the client visit their future self for advice.

Coaching is about building confidence and promoting self awareness. Frank says that people are never as awful as they deem themselves to be. “I create

a safe space because I’m completely nonjudgmental about all of people’s stuff,” Frank says. “I like their dark places. I see beauty in dark places.” — Susan Ellis

MENTOR IN MEMPHIS

When I was in the fifth grade, I had the one and only speaking part I would ever have in all of my kindergartenthrough-12th-grade school productions: “‘R’ stands for rewards. To better the lives of others is one of life’s greatest rewards.”

I don’t remember the context or what the occasion was now, but either the power of the words or the trauma of public speaking (let’s go with the former) caused that line to stick in my head all these years.

There are tons of ways to better other people’s lives here in Memphis that, believe it or not, could fulfill you, too. You could volunteer at a soup kitchen or build houses with Habitat for

Humanity or read to elementary kids.

The list goes on and on.

But, one way to really make a difference in someone’s life in a personal and intentional way is mentoring.

There are dozens of organizations in the city that need mentors. One of them is REACH Memphis, which exists to help Shelby County students succeed in high school and, subsequently, in college.

Lauran James, director of mentoring and volunteer services for REACH, says mentors play an integral part in the program, largely by helping students find direction.

“Mentors are needed across the board,” James says. “We have a crop of students that need direction. Our students just need positive guidance.

And that’s what mentoring gets them.

There would be no way we could do what we do without mentors.”

Meeting with students bi-monthly or weekly, mentors take on different roles, including helping students prepare for summer study programs at universities, career guidance, and college preparation, James says.

Though mentors must have at least two years of college education, James says the most important qualification is a “love for students and the desire for them to reach their highest potential.”

LEARN HOW TO COOK

START YOUR OWN BUSINESS

This is the year. You’ve had that great idea swirling in your brain for months, years maybe. You can see your own small business in the distance. It’s bathed in a shimmering, golden light. A scene plays in your mind: You’re laughing and giving your boss the bird, while $100 bills blizzard you both. Then, the record skips.

The daydream ends, and the vision of starting your business seems complicated and far away. But you still have that great idea. And this year — by god — you’re ready to begin your journey.

First step? Get yourself to the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library (3030 Poplar) on Monday, January, 14th, at 6 p.m. There, you’ll find an event called Simple Steps 1: Starting Your Small Business. It will feature a speaker from the local branch of the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) to help get you started.

The class introduces key business concepts, including the myths and realities of entrepreneurship. It’ll also walk you through some of the legal and financial considerations of business ownership. It is one of a five-part series from SCORE to help prospective entrepreneurs.

Beth Behrens, a Memphis Public Library librarian in business and sciences, organizes at least three small-business education events at the library each month, and they can draw sometimes up to 100 people.

“We’re very accessible and free and open to the public,” Behrens said.

“Other places may want [to charge for such events] but this is a free service.”

Behrens said the library also hosts other events with the Small Business Adminstration and the Tennessee Small Business Development Center. The library also has a small-business book collection, funded by First Tennessee

If learning how to cook is your New Year’s Resolution, who better to ask for advice than Kelly English, chef/owner of Restaurant Iris and The Second Line?

English says you should begin by reading up on the subject. “Get some books of some chefs you like and read and go with the basics,” he says.

English’s pick is The New Professional Chef by the Culinary Institute of America.

“It’s the most comprehensive book of all the basics and the reason why things are and the reason why they should be.” It defines cooking terms, including “braise” and other mysteries of the kitchen.

As for those basics, one of them is to know “how to use seasoning. Really, salt.

Like a lot of times you go to a restaurant and you say, ‘Oh, my God. This is the best whatever it can be.’ It can be any restaurant. And you want to know what they put on it. Usually the answer is salt and pepper.”

Another basic is to “practice things like knife cuts. When you cut your vegetables and they’re all the same size, they cook evenly.”

English says it’s important to get to know your stove. “Your stove has more settings than ‘off ’ and all the way on ‘high.’” It’s important to know when to use different heat on your stove. “Heat is an important thing to grasp,” English says.

It’s also a good idea to watch TV cooking shows. Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat on Netflix is a great one, English says.

Get good cooking equipment. “A really sharp knife is important,” says English. “A really sharp knife is less dangerous than a dull knife. Any time you have to use a lot of pressure with a dull knife, that’s when you end up cutting yourself.” And, he says, “You don’t have to get the most expensive set of knives. But you do need to keep them sharp.”

Next: “A good cutting board you keep clean. I like wood.” And “a good set of cast iron” and “a good non-stick skillet.” Metal bowls — as in stainless steel — are also on the list.

Finally, English says, it’s important to measure everything. So, get “one of those sets of measuring cups and measuring spoons.” — Michael Donahue

GO KETO

U.S. News & World Reports says the Mediterranean diet is the best, overall. The Today Show predicts your Facebook friends will be all about the flexitarian diet this year. I won’t make any recommendations or predictions.

(I’m not a doctor or a psychic.) But you should check out this October Facebook post from Memphis’ own Jacqueline Luisa Maria “Five Names” Sparks-Davila: “Game changer alert: Central BBQ nachos, (substitute) pork rinds. Sneak in your own sugar-free BBQ sauce and hold the nacho cheese sauce = low carb/keto meal dream.”

Sounds like a Memphis diet I can get behind.

By now, you or someone you know (maybe an annoying Facebook friend) has extolled the virtues of a low-carb diet, maybe the paleo or keto variety, where you replace grains, sugars, and processed foods with fats, protein, vegetables, and, y’know, “real” food.

Sparks-Davila began her keto (and sobriety) journey around the 2017 new year. She’s since said goodbye to 50 pounds and now describes her life as “true happiness.”

“It has honestly been life-changing,” she says. “I struggled with an addiction to carbs and sugars as well as binge eating. Keto successfully helped me change my eating habits, curbed the cravings, and helped me form a healthy relationship with food.”

Sparks-Davila says that her diet might not be for everyone and adds that you should check with your doctor first. But, if you can, it might worth a shot. You can still eat at your favorite Memphis joints. Sparks-Davila says, for example, that Slider Inn “will be happy to wrap any of your sliders in lettuce.”

And just think about those barbecue nachos at Central. Dang.

Learning to play a musical instrument as an adult is tough. Your fingers don’t move like that! And between work and yoga, who has time to practice?

If you’ve ever tried to learn an instrument and failed, you may want to reconsider the humble ukulele. And if you’re worried that learning to play ukulele might cut into your yoga time, take comfort in knowing that, thanks to ukulele and yoga instructor Misti Rae Holton, Yogalele is a real thing that exists in the world.

Holton teaches jazz classes and swing classes and group classes, and she’s begun to combine yoga and ukulele classes into this thing she calls yogalele. But she likes teaching beginners best, and for folks who like

seeing fast results, she says it’s not uncommon for starters to leave their first uke lesson playing between four and six songs.

“I was working at Midtown Music when my boss told me, ‘you’re going to teach a group ukulele lesson to a grandmother and her two grandkids,’” Holton says, describing an unanticipated assignment that sparked an even more unanticipated career expansion.

“I’d never taught a music lesson in my life, but it ended up being an amazing experience because ukulele is so easy to teach and learn,” she says. “It hit me immediately that this is the most accessible way for people to learn and start playing songs. It was magical for me.”

“Usually we do yoga first, then we play ukulele,” she says. “But I do combine them.”

Trends come and go, but the Memphis ukulele community is strong and growing. All 17 branches of the Memphis Public Library have donated ukuleles and free classes are available.

Weekly meeting of the Memphis Ukulele Flash Mob brings close to 100 people to Central BBQ every Tuesday between 6 and 8 p.m. Those who start learning to play now may even be ready to participate in impromptu jams by the time Memphis hosts its first ukulele festival, April 23rd-26th at the Warehouse. — Chris Davis

GROW A GARDEN

Gardening is one healthy habit.

Research has shown that working in the dirt can significantly improve one’s mood and immune system, due to contact with microbes in the soil biome, which mix with the microbes in our own guts. On a more terrestrial scale, you and yours can enjoy the flavor and vitality of a fresh-picked harvest some weeks or months later, barring any droughts or plagues of locusts.

January is just the time to start planning a garden. Plenty of greens, legumes, and root crops can be planted in a month or two, and even plantings after the last freeze can benefit from you picking your spot and prepping the soil now. For starters, it’s better to think of your dirt less as a mud pie and more like a giant lung. Ideally, you’ll be creating a plant bed that’s inhaling and exhaling air and water, with plenty of organic matter to break down in the process. That means considering the air flow above and below ground level, as continued on page 12

and therefore without the program, have no idea how to prepare for a higher education, James says. “Those who aren’t getting mentors are missing out,” James says. “There’s no one to counsel them. Not one of the students who has gone through the program hasn’t said that it’s changed their life. It’s awesome and powerful.”

James says the benefits aren’t only reaped by the mentees either, as the mentors get the satisfaction of having a hands-on part of changing a person’s life.

plant health improves with circulation; low plots of land can hinder such flow and pool water to boot.

Low land is also more prone to compaction. That’s not conducive to soil respiration or friendly to every farmer’s friend, the lowly worm. It’s just one thing to keep in mind when choosing a site.

Avoid gardening near walnut or hickory trees, as they secrete the plant-inhibiting toxin juglone. And naturally, you’ll want a spot with plenty of sunshine; though areas with a couple hours of summer shade can help cool-weather crops thrive longer.

If you’re installing raised beds, compaction won’t be a problem, but be aware that they dry out easier, come summer. If you’re opting for bare ground you can eventually till, note that many farmers use a broadfork to poke deep holes in their earth; a yard aerator or a even a potato fork, stepped into the ground every few inches, can approximate the effect. You can then throw compost over the area, and even cardboard and leaves over that. Later, when the ground is drier, you can spade or till up the area, incorporating the compost into your pre-aerated bed: a paradise for practically any kind of crop you care to grow. — Alex Greene

GO VEGAN

My original thought was to interview my family relations in Atlanta about their dietary regimen by way of suggesting a new path in personal behavior.

My 16-year-old granddaughter Eva responded in written form, as follows, and I would not presume to try to improve upon what she said. — Jackson Baker I went vegan three years ago because I love animals. However, I constantly hear arguments about my decision.

Veganism is better for your health, helps the environment, and is an ethical lifestyle choice. So what’s the problem? I often get the question, “Where do you get your protein from?” Despite the fact that I don’t consume animal products, I get plenty of protein from plant-based foods such as grains, nuts, beans, and even vegetables.

Did you know that per calorie, broccoli has more protein than beef? Veganism is also beneficial to the environment.

Did you know that animal agriculture is a leading cause of climate change? As difficult as it is to imagine, you could fill up a swimming pool with the amount of water it takes to make one person a week’s worth of hamburgers.

As we start a new year, a vegan diet is a healthy choice because it lowers cholesterol, reduces risk of cancer and diabetes, and can help you live a longer, healthier life. Because I’m only 16, I am mostly concerned with the immediate

effects of going vegan. I have lost weight and became more energetic on the diet.

I often hear people say that they could never go vegan because it’s too difficult.

I thought the same thing before I went vegan, but I soon got used to it. There is a vegan version of everything now, even Oreos and Coke. Going vegan will also make you feel better about your ethical choices. I was raised as a vegetarian, but wish I’d known that the egg and dairy industries kill just as many animals as the meat industry. I love animals, and I feel so much better knowing that I am helping to save lives. My only regret about going vegan is not doing it sooner.

TRANSFORM YOURSELF

Do you want to transform yourself into a new you for the new year, but you’re not sure how? You can start by looking to the movies for examples. Since character change is vital to a satisfying story, films and television are full of people transforming themselves.

Take the Transformers, for example.

Bumblebee, now in theaters, is the sixth film about robots from the planet Cybertron who transform themselves into cars for … reasons. The films have earned a combined $4 billion at the box office, so they must be doing something right.

On the other hand, Transformers movies are terrible, and transforming yourself into a car is not really something you can do in real life. God knows I’ve tried.

For a more useful personal transformation template, look to superheros. Sure, Aquaman, who ruled the holiday box office as well as the Atlantean depths, was born that way, but many superheroes undergo a lifechanging tranformation before they start fighting crime in tights. The star of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was bitten by radioactive spiders, thus gaining the strength, grace, and wallcrawling ability of an arachnid. Again, this is not great life advice. First of all, radioactive spiders aren’t a thing. If you irradiate a spider enough, it’s just going to die. Assuming there was a spider with radioactive venom, and it bit you, you wouldn’t get superpowers — you’d get leukemia.

A better superhero template for self transformation is Batman. He doesn’t have any impossible superpowers, he’s just a guy who does a lot of push-ups.

Batman’s superpower is his will. He’s determined, he’s thought the situation through like a true paranoid who dresses up like a bat at night, and he’s used his vast fortune to prepare for all possible contingencies. Hardaway can go small and, as he says, “speed [an opponent] up.” He can lean on veterans like Martin, Davenport, and Brewton, or go with the hot freshman hands of Harris, Lomax, or Antwann Jones (a trio that disappeared in last Sunday’s loss at Houston). These Tigers aren’t just deep, they’re versatile.

• 1 — There appears to be but one killer team in the American Athletic Conference, and the Tigers’ 13-point loss to Houston last Sunday will be the only time Memphis faces that team until (possibly) the league tournament in March. According to the NCAA’s new NET rankings, only the Cougars (4) belong among the country’s top 30 teams (through Monday’s games).

Perusing the list, you find UCF (31), Cincinnati (34), and Temple (62) before locating Memphis (73). Houston may dominate this league, but there’s room for another team (or two) to accumulate wins and enter the conversation for an at-large NCAA tournament berth.

• 119,828 — The Tigers sold more tickets for their first eight home games (all nonconference) than they did for the entire 19-game home schedule in 2017-18 (118,277). Hardaway has a delightfully ironic nickname. A math wizard needs to calculate the pennies generated not just for the U of M, but for sponsors, bars, hotels, and vendors that support Tiger basketball since Hardaway took over coaching duties.

And you get the sense this is much more than a honeymoon. A crowd of 13,000 for South Dakota State on a Tuesday in December? That’s money, Penny.

erewith, six numeric takes on an already memorable Tiger basketball season.

• 90 — From his opening press conference as Tiger coach, Penny Hardaway has stressed a desire to run opponents out of FedExForum, to leave players in dark jerseys gasping for breath at the first media timeout. There are various ways to measure the pace of a basketball team: number of possessions, number of shots, frequency of turnovers (for either team). But the best measure of a fast team is in the scoring column.

The Tigers recently sprinted through five consecutive games in which they scored at least 90 points, a streak unmatched in these parts since the 1975-76 season (when Bill Cook and Marion Hilliard were leading the Tigers to the NCAA tournament). Memphis has struggled at times (including shooting accuracy from the field), but it hasn’t been muddy basketball at FedExForum. As the current team continues to grow — yes, college teams can grow after New Year’s Day — Penny’s pace may indeed end a game or two before halftime.

• 0 — Kyvon Davenport’s uniform number has become a paradoxical reflection of his value to this team. After a rocky first five minutes in last week’s AAC opener against Wichita State, Hardaway was pleading (loudly) for his team to get Davenport the basketball.

They did. And the senior, freshly shorn of his signature dreadlocks, scored a game-high 25 points in a relatively comfortable win over the Shockers.

Don’t confuse Davenport coming off Hardaway’s bench with his place in this roster’s pecking order. He’s pulled down 30 more rebounds than any teammate.

Jeremiah Martin may be the anointed leader of the 2018-19 Tigers, but you get the impression that, come March, this team will go as far as Davenport takes it.

• 77.9 — The Tigers rank 12th — dead last — in the American Athletic Conference in points allowed per game.

Hardaway has insisted his team will play fast with the ball and apply the clamps defensively. Memphis has done one of these well to date.

• 9 — Hardaway has gone ninedeep with his rotation, and it might be 10 had freshman sharpshooter David Wingett not been sidelined by injury. Five seniors, a junior, and three freshmen have played at least 13 minutes per game, with only three —

Future historians will have a lot of material to work with when they write about the first quarter of the 21st century and the last days of the American Confederacy, when statues memorializing white supremacy and the old South slave economy were taken down in many places, including Memphis. Few documents cut to the heart of the moment like the “Whose History?” episode of the Epix docuseries, America Divided, which originally aired in May 2018.

When Sons of Confederate Veterans spokesperson Lee Millar says these statues celebrate “our ancestors,” episode narrator and Empire actor Jussie Smollett is quick to remind that this narrative erases black history and a legacy of violence and social control. “I don’t think that’s trying to extract that, or trying to cover that up, I think the emphasis is on promoting the good side and the bravery of the soldiers,” Millar answered, unaware that he was demonstrating in the clearest possible terms, the difference between history and neo-Confederate narratives and illustrating Rhodes College history professor Tim Huebner’s earlier claim that Confederate monuments and their defenders “were really good at not telling the whole truth.”

“Whose History,” which gets a repeat screening at the Brooks Museum this week, courtesy of Facing History and Ourselves, spends most of its time in Memphis, but it opens in Chattanooga with the last words of Ed Johnson, an African-American male accused of committing a crime against a 21-year-old white female and hung from the Walnut Street Bridge by an angry white mob. “God Bless you all, I am a innocent man,” he said. Those words resonate hard with the show’s concluding moments in another corner of Shelby County, and a story about the vicious lynching of Jesse Lee Bonds. “Some things you can’t put behind you,” Bonds’ surviving brother Charlie Morris said. “You look back and it’s in front of you.”

These conflicts may seem like yesterday’s news, but like the man said, they’re still in front of us. Solid perspective on recent history.

Mark Chambers lives in San Francisco these days, but he’s Memphis to the bone. Chambers made his stage debut at the Overton Park Shell as one of 50 flying monkeys in The Wizard of Oz. He made an indelible impression on Memphis audiences in adult roles, especially that of Frank-N-Furter in Richard O’Brien’s Rocky Horror Picture Show. He grew up in Midtown reading In Cold Blood and other Truman Capote stories with his grandmother and watching movies like Eraserhead and Zaza Gabor’s The Queen of Outer Space at The Guild, a Poplar Avenue movie house that’s now home to the Evergreen Theater. “It’s such a great space,” says Chambers, who’s come home to the Evergreen to play Capote, in Cloud9 Theatre Company’s production of Tru, a one-man show about the author’s infamous struggles with booze, drugs, and fame.

Memphis Flyer: Obviously, you like this material. You’ve performed it elsewhere four times now.

Mark Chambers: I think it’s good writing. In a one-man show, you’re always wondering, “Who is this person talking to?”

In this one, he just comes out and says, “I like to talk to myself, and for myself, so there.” And it’s all his words. You can trace them back; there are clips. It’s a good fit for me, too, at this time in my life, and I like him.

This is a Capote after he’s passed from being a great writer into being just a celebrity.

That’s in the show, “I used to be famous for writing books, now I’m famous for being famous,” and it’s at the absolutely worst part, emotionally and professionally, of his life.

Capote has to be one of the most impersonated celebrities ever …

I think I’m not doing an impersonation. I’m going to call it an insinuation. I sort of look like him — or I’m told by the end of the play I look like him. I do, but I don’t. If you let the words work, the audience makes connections.

ast Saturday, an unprecedented assembly of African-American artists gathered in Orange Mound. It was ostensibly for a photo shoot organized by the nonprofit known as the Collective, but it was obvious, as dozens of local black creatives socialized and networked all morning, that much more was going on. “It’s the first time so many of Memphis’ black artists have come together all at once,” said Collective program director Lawrence Matthews. “This represents millions of dollars worth of talent.”

In a sense, it was the unofficial grand opening of the nonprofit’s new space, the CMPLX, next to the Orange Mound Gallery (OMG) in an unassuming strip mall at Park and Airways. The official event takes place this Friday evening, with an impressive lineup of visual artists, musicians,

have partnered with other black arts organizations, like Unapologetic. Folks are ready to invest. We’re just the first domino.” And, she adds, the CLTV’s relationship with the neighborhood is reciprocal. “Orange Mound is already a very energized space. We’re just trying to find ways we can exist within that.”

From the looks of it, the CLTV is in Orange Mound to stay.

and others. But on this crisp Saturday morning, the collection of talent showed how the Collective, aka the CLTV, represents a movement that goes far beyond its nominal membership. As Matthews explained, “We don’t want to just make it about black visual artists and black musicians, but black dancers, black writers, black filmmakers. Even black thinkers. If you’re an individual that loves creativity, you have a place and a safe space with us, to get paid and to create things.”

After working for four years without a headquarters, executive director Victoria Jones emphasizes the importance of having the CMPLX. “How do we create really strong black artists? Create space for them to actually exist. We’ll also promote professional and creative development opportunities, host critiques, round tables, and sharing work with peers.”

She adds that the CLTV will also guide artists’ careers. “We’ve got funding from the Tennessee Arts Commission and ArtsMemphis to put together a professional development series, once we open the space. We’ll be talking about the business side of being an artist.”

A dedicated space will improve the CLTV’s business as well. While institutions like Crosstown Arts or the Brooks Museum of Art have hosted their events, Jones points out that they have been the most poorly attended. In contrast, the opening of last summer’s “Thug” exhibit at the OMG was packed.

Says Matthews of being hosted by other organizations, “It’s like, why should I come to this space? If I’m in Hickory Hill or whatever, why should I come to this space, which charges me whatever to come in here, and I get followed around? We spent a year trying to cultivate those relationships. At the end of it, I don’t know how much we took away from it, besides, okay, we should do this on our own.”

Friday’s grand opening will bring in a wealth of talent, including performances by NuJas, Erlee, Magnolia, AWFM, Cameron Bethany, Don Lifted, Ricky Davaine, Rudy Rhymer, and Cities Aviv, not to mention works by over a dozen visual artists. It foreshadows the relaunch of the CLTV’s monthly Decibel concert series in February, not to mention other, smaller performances in the large studio room in the back. “It’ll almost be like a Tiny Desk show,” says Jones, “because this room will indeed be used as an art studio. We won’t make people move their artwork. But we’ll have a photo backdrop so musicians’ whole setup will fit neatly into that.”

Jones hopes such events will attract other collectives to the area.

“I don’t think it stops with us. We

’ve always loved making lists, ranking anything from movies to books to music to my friends.

My ears perk up when I hear, “Name your Top 10 whatevers.”

So, numerous times throughout my life, I’ve enthusiastically answered the question “What’s your favorite album?”

Trouble is, I’ve toggled back and forth numerous times between two albums: The Beatles’ Revolver and Bob Dylan’s Blonde on Blonde. To me, they seem the pillars of ’60s rock, my favorite genre in the known universe. Obviously, the book That Thin, Wild Mercury Sound: Dylan, Nashville, and the Making of Blonde on Blonde by Daryl Sanders was right up my alley.

Sanders slowly leads up to the recording of that double album in Nashville, providing some colorful background: Dylan going electric, Dylan making Highway 61 Revisited, Dylan meeting and going on the road with the Hawks (who became The Band).

It’s a pivotal period in Dylan’s life. He is about to change music forever. “I know my thing now,” Dylan says. “I know what it is. It’s hard to describe. I don’t know what to call it because I’ve never heard it before.” Sanders adds, “It would be another thirteen years before he found a description that worked — ‘that thin, wild mercury sound.’”

The title phrase refers to a music Dylan heard in his head but that eluded him in the studio. He thought he found it with the Hawks. Instead, he was finally able to create the sound in his head on record when he went to Nashville and recorded this, his greatest album. Here’s the most common lineup with whom he found that once elusive sound: Producer: Bob Johnston. Nashville cats: Charlie McCoy (guitar and harmonica), Hargus Robbins (piano), Joe South (guitar), Henry Strzelecki (bass), and Kenneth Buttrey (drums). And Dylan brought with him

Robbie Robertson (guitar) and Al Kooper (organ).

I’ve read a lot about Dylan, but he seems an inexhaustible subject. I learned a lot here. For instance, I didn’t know that Jerry Schatzberg, who later became a wonderful director (the Al Pacino film, Scarecrow), took the iconic cover shot.

Dylan himself chose the blurry print, which delighted Schatzberg.

The meatiest part of the book concerns the actual recording of the album. Many of the sessions were done in the wee hours of the morning, which didn’t always please the professional Nashville cats, though they were, mostly, aware that they were part of something momentous. “According to studio records,” Sanders says, “it was 4 a.m. when the Nashville musicians finally got their introduction to the ‘Sad Eyed Lady.’” The reference is to “Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands,” the epic song that took up the entire side four of the LP. “To me, this is the definitive version of what 4 a.m. sounds like,” Al Kooper said.

Much of the wait was because Dylan was writing and polishing the lyrics as they went along. Often, he sat in a part of the studio cut off from the other musicians with just paper and a pen. Strzelecki said, “You know, this is going to be either the biggest album in the world, or it ain’t gonna do nothin.’”

Fortunately, the former part of his prediction is on the mark. After Blonde on Blonde was released and digested, it became one of the most influential records in rock music. Much about the recording, the songs, even the title, has become part of rock myth. Many believe the title is a reference to Edie Sedgwick, from Warhol’s factory, who dated Dylan briefly. Others suggested it referred to Brian Jones and Anita Pallenberg, or to Dylan’s high school girlfriend. Sanders adds, “Finally, there is also the fact that taken as an acronym, the title spells BOB.” This fascinating, delicious book offers great insight into both the minutia of the recording process and Bob Dylan’s idiosyncratic, eccentric methods. For songwriters, this book may offer unlimited inspiration. For Dylan fans, it is a must.

Joy of Cooking Ali Rohrbacher’s baked goods.

I

n sixth grade, Ali Rohrbacher won first prize at the school’s science fair for her project on recycling. “I weighed each individual house’s recycling for three months.”

And, she says, “It was essentially a lot of math.”

Math wasn’t her strongpoint.

“I avoided doing math for my entire academic career, even when I went to college. Then I ended up coming to find a hobby, an obsession that turned into a career, that is so math-centered. I have to do math every single day. So, it’s a little ironic.”

That was baking. Rohrbacher, 28, now is head baker at The cafe at Crosstown Arts.

She excelled at arts and crafts as a child growing up in Memphis. “I was much more adept — and naturally adept — at arts and literature studies.”

Rohrbacher applied to art schools, but ended up going to Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington, an alternative education-styled public college. She got her degree in arts and literature, but she still didn’t know what she wanted to do for a career.

Rohrbacher eventually moved back home and got a job doing data entry-type work and, later, she got a part-time bookkeeping job. “[I] talked my way into it, being that I went to a college and I could read. That’s basically all the requirements.”

In “an effort to become a healthier person,” Rohrbacher began cooking.

“A lot of that stress and anxiety about my future was translating into white cheddar popcorn and wine and candy and things that were not so healthy. So, in an effort to become just a functional adult that is also healthy, not eating white cheddar popcorn every day for meals, I started reading about cooking.

I got a book about canning, making jams and pickles.”

After she made some “incredible pickles,” Rohrbacher learned how to make meatballs that rivalled the meatballs in subs she and her roommates got at a restaurant. “I was like, ‘If I could figure out how to make the rolls, we would save so much money.’”

Her first bread recipe was basic.

“Maybe it was even in Joy of Cooking.

That’s how basic of a recipe it was.”

She then bought a book, Bread Revolution by Peter Reinhart, about sprouted grains and sprouted flour, and

she began making sourdough bread starter from scratch. “It was no longer a pursuit of health food. It became about a pursuit of an obsessive hobby.”

Rohrbacher began baking bread before work and after work. “I have a competitive personality type. I also used to run in the same kind of way. I hated running, but I would run every day because I was competing with myself from the day before. [It’s] almost like I supplemented baking for running.”

About a year later, Rohrbacher began giving her bread to friends. And, after she finally perfected it, she began selling it.

She began Hustle & Dough Baking Co., a cottage foods operation she still runs.

While still working at her office jobs, Rohrbacher worked out a volunteer arrangement with Caritas Village. She used its kitchen on Sundays for her baking. In return, she did catering jobs, where she made pies and other items.

She also began selling her baked goods to City & State cafe. She then got a job as The Liquor Store restaurant’s head baker, where she made pies, cakes, fresh biscuits, burger buns, Cuban rolls, and sandwich bread.

Last May, Rohrbacher went to work at The cafe at Crosstown Arts, where she continued her self-teaching practice and developed vegan recipes. She eventually created a bread program and became head baker for Crosstown Arts.

Rohrbacher is in a good place with her career. “I can relate it to that way I thought that I would feel one day about doing visual art. I feel that every day because every day I’m baking bread.

Every day I get to see and touch and then sometimes eat these products that I’ve made with my own hands. Because I’ve been working every day at it for the last few years. Because I care so much and I, literally, do work so hard. I get this sense of satisfaction from it that I absolutely did not get from data entry.”

And we don’t need to plant our coriander in perfect rows, either. We token gardeners can just toss our coriander toward the garden by the handful. I tossed mine toward locations that were specifically chosen based on the changing angle of the sun.

When tossing seeds at the garden, one should make an effort to cover them, either by raking them in or sprinkling with topsoil or compost.

Unless rain is imminent, give them a good soaking.

My Calypso seeds arrived in February. In April, I began throwing coriander into the middle of the garden, where it would get the most sun. As the days grew longer and hotter, I threw seeds into shadier spots, between raspberry bushes, under the tomatoes, beside the spinach. I threw seeds toward the pathways, the garlic patch, the chicken yard.

In the heat of summer, as expected, most of my cilantro flowered and went to seed. Most, but not all. Because I had so much cilantro in the ground, in so many spots, from full sun to full shade, it was always possible to find enough cilantro when I needed it. That token sack of cilantro seed, which cost me 14 bucks, returned free cilantro all summer long. There wasn’t always a ton of it, but it never quite ran out.

I did what you do when you have cilantro. I made salsa, chutney, curry, tacos. By the end of summer, the garden was full of cilantro plants gone to seed, some of which had dropped and sprouted anew.

I thought about trying to save some of my homegrown coriander for the pantry. Then I remembered I still had continued on page 32

ast year at about this time, I sat down with a stack of seed catalogs, a warm beverage, and a pantry full of dreams. I repeat this ritual every year, fully aware that it’s only a game and that only a token amount of my food will ever come from my garden, regardless of how many seeds I order.

But tokens like this have a way of taking me to some cool places, so each winter as I peruse my seed catalogs, I choose a few more. Last winter, I ordered a token pound of cilantro seeds, aka coriander. As a result, I didn’t have to buy cilantro all summer, or coriander all winter, and I became acquainted with one of England’s favorite comfort foods.

In the U.K., where cilantro is called “coriander leaf,” cooks use both seed and foliage in a velvety carrot soup.

Carrot and coriander soup is so popular that entire top 10 lists have been written, ranking and comparing the various retail options available on the British market. When I started making batches of my own this winter, I began to understand why.

I had ordered my pound of coriander based on conversations with a farmer friend named Luci, who plants cilantro every two weeks, from April through September. It’s her most profitable summertime crop, in terms of output vs. return, she says. Luci recommended the Calypso variety because it can handle more heat than most cilantro plants, she can plant it tightly and cut it like salad mix, and she gets a second cutting from each planting. In the middle of summer, when cilantro wants to flower as soon as it sprouts, Luci uses shade cloth to cool the soil before planting, but token gardeners like myself can use the shade

So I’ve been making a lot of coriander and carrot soup, sometimes without the fresh coriander leaf that most recipes call for — it’s great either way. I use carrots and onions from the winter farmers market, and garlic and coriander from my pantry. What I find most striking about this mellow, satisfying soup is how the coriander disappears.

The carrots and onions neutralize the strong-flavored seed to the point where you can barely taste it in the soup. My version is assembled from ideas and ingredients picked and chosen from other recipes. With a dish as simple as this one, even mild deviations can have a big impact on the final character, so there is no need to get fancy. Just get some coriander, and you will be fine.

Coriander Carrot Soup This soup is pureed, ideally in a blender. An immersion blender or food processor does the trick, eventually. We want zero chunks.

Makes 12 cups; serves 6 1 ½ pounds carrots, sliced (about 5 cups)

1 pound onion (one large one), sliced 1 stalk celery, chopped 1 large garlic clove ¼ pound potato, peeled and sliced 1 tablespoon coriander seeds or 1 teaspoon ground coriander ½ cup cilantro, loosely packed 1 teaspoon salt 8 cups water (no stock necessary) Garnish: some kind of cream, such as heavy cream, mayo, or sour cream Place the carrots, onion, potato, garlic, salt, and water in a large pot, and bring to “the boil,” as they would say. Simmer for 30 minutes, skimming any scum that floats to the surface.

Meanwhile, toast the coriander seeds in a dry pan on medium-low heat. When browned and aromatic but not burnt (about five to 10 minutes), grind them (If you don’t have a spice grinder, use the ground coriander) and add to the pot.

Simmer until everything is tender, about 20 minutes. Turn off the heat and let it cool to a temperature you can manage in a blender. Blend in batches. Add fresh cilantro and blend again, until the green flecks of fresh coriander are to your liking: not too big, not too small, but just right.

Serve hot or cold, garnished with the cream of your choice, extra coriander, or some grated ginger, if you wish.

white wine loved by grandmothers the world over, is rumored to be making a big comeback in 2019 as a cocktail component. I hope to experiment over the next few months and report back soon with a few recipes. I’ll start with a Sherry and tonic this weekend.

Spiritually speaking, like many boozehounds, I’ve been leaning heavily on tequila the last several months, so why not move on to mezcal, its desert-based “agave cousin”? According to metrics reported by the Distilled Spirits Council and published on BeverageDynamics.com, mezcal sales have exploded from less than 50,000 cases in 2009 to around 360,000 cases in 2017. By 2022, the mezcal industry is expected to exceed 1.2 million cases.

The liquor tends to lean earthy/smoky or fresh, with characteristics that fall everywhere in between. It’s good with brandy, tequila, Vermouth, fruit juice, and ginger beer.

I’m headed to New Mexico later this month, and I plan to hit up every bartender in the state for their favorite recommendations, recipes, and techniques. Once I’ve identified the flavors I like the most, I’ll experiment at home, although truthfully, mezcal might remain more of a special occasion go-to, since at the lower end, it runs approximately $30 per bottle.

While I’m on the subject of drinking out of town, I hope to do that more frequently, too. Just last weekend, The New York Times Times’ business section ran an article about the Napa-fication of American whiskey distilleries as a billiondollar tourism industry. From the Kentucky Bourbon Trail to the Willamette Valley, destination drinking is a major influencer on my travel plans.

And, of course, I want to sample more local talent.

There are dozens of new bars to visit and bartenders to meet, and even more breweries, taprooms, and distilleries in the region to try on for size. Each place, person, and taste has its own personality, which is part of what makes responsible drinking so much more fun.

hile I’ve heard that “Dry January” is a trend for many people who might have rung in the new year a bit too heartily, and I do know a few friends who abstain from alcohol for a month to recalibrate their drinking habits, I’ve never been one to “just say no.” I am devoting a bit of time this month to contemplate my own reasons to drink — of course they’re emotional, as well as physical — and, as I do every new year, recalibrate my consumption.

Wine-wise, that means avoiding reds in the winter months. My allergist has convinced me that when it’s cold outside, the histamines and sulfites found in Cabernets and Merlots stress my sinuses. White wines, particularly those without added sulfites, are a much better bet, so my refrigerator is currently stocked with a few bottles of Pinot Grigio and Vinho Verde.

This year, I’m on a mission to discover more varietals. I lean toward crisply acidic whites, so why haven’t I sampled more Viognier? The bold, fruity wine has been popular across Europe since Roman times; today, it’s the star of vineyards that span the globe, including Virginia, California’s Central Coast, Oregon’s Willamette Valley, British Colombia, Argentina, Chile, Australia, Japan, and South Africa.

For several years, the Chilean Casillero del Diablo Viognier was in my repertoire — now it’s time to try the equally affordable Cline Viognier 2016, which hails from Sonoma County, and the Yalumba Y Series Viognier 2017, an Australian variety. Both are available on Memphis shelves for around $15 per bottle.

Also on my shortlist: the dry, sweet Gewürztraminer, originally made from grapes that ripen on vines planted in northern Europe, and now a banging crop in vineyards as far-flung as New Zealand. Likewise, I plan to delve deeper into the realm of Moscato — I love to pair this wine with spicy Indian and Vietnamese take-out, but often fail to keep a bottle stashed in the fridge at home.

Love & Happiness Do not miss Barry Jenkins’ rapturous If Beale Street Could Talk.

et’s get this out of the way: If Beale Street Could Talk is not set in Memphis. It’s not about Beale Street or the blues or loquacious rights-of-way. In fact, in the opening epigraph, author James Baldwin says Beale Street is in New Orleans.

James Baldwin may have been geographically challenged, but he was a stone cold literary genius.

When he invoked Beale Street in the opening of his 1974 novel, one of the country’s first black-owned business districts existed to him as a lost world of African-American freedom. The name represented the realization of the kind of personal autonomy American capitalism always promises, but which was ultimately denied to people like Tish Rivers (KiKi Layne) and Fonny Hunt (Stephan James), two young, working-class kids from Harlem, who happen to be black.

Tish and Fonny are in love like only 19-year-olds can be. As soon as Fonny gets a new place — he’s got a crappy cold-water flat, but the budding sculptor is looking at a fixer-upper artist’s loft — he’s going to pop the question. But then Fonny gets in the mildest of street hassles, just a little pushing and shoving

over Tish’s honor, and all of a sudden he’s in the crosshairs of the prison industrial complex.

The racist cop he pisses off that fateful night soon gets an opportunity to frame him for a brutal rape that happened all the KiKi Layne and way across the city. With Fonny Stephan James on trial for his life, it is not a good time for Tish to announce she’s pregnant.

Director Barry Jenkins has broken the rule that the mediocre books make the best movies. He takes Baldwin’s dauntingly nonlinear literary structure and makes it smooth and easily understandable. Each jump forward and backward in time reveals a little bit more of the story in a way designed to maximize the emotional impact. The ending, when it comes, reveals characters who are forever changed but unbroken.

Jenkins’ color sense is second to no one working today. I think he invented some new, tastefully early-’70s hues especially for this movie. The film’s recreation of ’70s Harlem is flawless, and, knowing Jenkins, done efficiently. Jenkins loves to work in

close up, or with his camera fixed on an effortlessly flawless composition. When his camera does move, it flows through space.

Every performance on the screen, from Layne’s heartbreakingly naive Tish, interrupted on the edge of lasting happiness, to Colman Domingo bringing laughing gravitas to the role of her father, feels fully human. As Tish’s mother, Regina King puts on a onewoman Strasberg-ian acting clinic.

It all comes together in an emotionally epic scene in which Tish and Fonny’s families grapple with the reality of a new baby on the way. If my description makes this film sound like a downer, it’s not. Tish’s family’s first reaction is to rejoice at the prospect of

Together, Baldwin and Jenkins celebrate the love that flourishes in the midst of tragedy and injustice.

Jenkins came up from the indie underground, emerging from Miami in 2008 with Medicine for Melancholy and going on to win Best Picture for 2016’s Moonlight. He found the perfect material to adapt in If Beale Street Could Talk. Its examination of the human cost of the carceral state and indictment of institutions of justice that wink at racism as long as the conviction numbers stay high is, sadly, as relevant as ever.

When I found out 2019 was Memphis’ bicentennial year, I expected a nonstop party.

But here we are, almost halfway through January and I have not been invited to a single birthday function. Nor have I seen photos from a birthday function I wasn’t invited to. People don’t even know. You’d think it was just some regular year, not the dawn of the Third Century of the Bluff City.

The bicentennial has barely garnered a mention since the state legislature tried to punish us for removing those Confederate statues by taking our birthday party money away.

You only turn 200 once. Plenty of haters — the yellow fever, for one — didn’t think we would make it this far. This is no time to be bashful. Sure, the “big day” is still four months away, and I know we’re not the type of city that likes to make everything about us. But if anyone’s saying “Ugh, we get it, it’s your birthday year” by then, do we really need that kind of negativity in our lives?

Maybe, like me on my 30th, Memphis doesn’t feel like it’s accomplished as much as it had hoped. In that case, I can empathize with the desire to keep things low-key.

But listen, Memphis: 200 isn’t the end. We are going to take every lesson learned in the first 200 years and use them as the foundation for our Best Century Yet. We’re not going to dwell too much on the past and somehow make this another Elvis thing. I’m taking it upon myself to get the party started with some shoutouts to a few presentday Memphians I admire, because the people make the place. Also, the water. But mostly the people. I could probably list 200, but in the interest of word-counts I’ll start with three who, like the city itself, are unsung, underrated, and understated.

Gary Crain is the pastor at the New Testament Christian Church at the corner of Quince and Mount Moriah. I don’t attend his church, and I’ve never heard his sermons. But he has been a part of my mornings for as long as I can remember. No matter the weather, he’s standing out front, smiling and waving to commuters most weekdays. Sometimes cars pull over to stop and chat, and other drivers quietly go around them. It amazes me that an act as small as a wave can bring so much joy to a person’s day. Multiply that by thousands of drivers and passengers: It’s a movement. It makes me want to be more neighborly. I plan my commute around that wave.

You may not know his name, but if you’ve seen painted windows in Midtown and Downtown, or shopped at Cash Saver or the Superlo on Southern, you definitely know Calvin Farrar’s work. For years he’s brightened the windows at Silky’s, Huey’s, the Bar-B-Q Shop, and dozens of other businesses with those colorful and imaginative murals.

Griz dunks on Santa Claus, Pouncer devours Huey burgers, all in the most perfectly old-school, quintessentially Memphis style.

Parking Can Be Fun is only fun because there is usually a Farrar painting nearby. Nobody does what he does. He is an institution, and watching him work is a treat.

Memphis basketball fans love local players who stay home. Maybe I’m overanalyzing, but I think the appreciation transcends your standard-issue hometown-hero worship. They represent the belief that you don’t have to choose between the city and your dreams. That is a lot to put on a kid, which explains why many still choose to leave and others stay and fail.

It’s early, but Alex Lomax is a teammate. I’ve watched him flex after assisting on a layup and chest-bump a teammate after drawing a foul — no victory is too small to celebrate. He doesn’t score a ton of points (yet?), but he leads in other ways. A 5’10” point guard, he had eight rebounds against Wichita State. And what he lacks in size, he makes up for in hustle. If that’s not Memphis as hell, I don’t know what is. He is easy to root for, just like his coach, and his coach’s coach before him.

Nearly 200 years in, is Memphis perfect? No way. Is it even close to perfect? Also no. Is it full of fantastically kind, brilliant, talented, and creative people? Yes, we do have that going for us.

Let’s celebrate them all year and beyond.
