Contemporary Craft FY23 Annual Report

ANNUAL REPORT 2023

FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Friends of Contemporary Craft—

As you know, we believe that art has the power to change lives, and over the past year at Contemporary Craft our work has continued to embody that statement. We have experienced remarkable growth, while stabilizing our organizational programs post-move and post-pandemic. In the following pages, we would like to take this opportunity to make note of some of the highlights, including new initiatives that are both public-facing and behind-thescenes. We launched a new workshop series that offers multi-week sessions, we began planning to add an additional exhibition to our annual calendars, and we launched several new engagement initiatives such as a national artist in residence program and Community Days; as well as we created a craftfocused podcast.

We acknowledge that none of these programs would be possible without our community—your attendance, interest in, and support of Contemporary Craft is central to all that we do. I hope that this report will give you a deeper understanding of the myriad of ways that we are engaging the community in creative experiences and growing the impact of the craft field in Pittsburgh, and beyond. We hope to see you at Contemporary Craft soon.

With gratitude,

Hello Friends of CC

DONOR PROFILE

ALEX NEAL

How did you first get connected to Contemporary Craft? How long have you been involved?

It’s hard to believe, but I’ve been on the Contemporary Craft board since 2018! I was first connected to CC through my graduate program at the University of Pittsburgh, and I’m so glad I was paired with such a missiondriven organization.

What parts of Contemporary Craft do you find most exciting, interesting, or rewarding?

I love the artist talks at the opening of exhibitions. There is no better way to understand all that has gone into a piece—or an entire show—than speaking with those that have put in endless hours to make it happen.

If you were talking to someone thinking about supporting Contemporary Craft, what would you tell them?

There are so many ways to make a meaningful impact at Contemporary Craft. Between attending events, volunteering, purchasing amazing works in the store, or making a meaningful gift, it is easy to find the right path for you to support CC. I give on a recurring monthly basis, which works well for me. I know how important it is for the organization to have an idea of projected revenue and (selfishly) I don’t have to remember to enter my information—all that is done automatically!

CONTEMPORARY CRAFT

ARCHIVES PROJECT

Over the past year, Contemporary Craft has begun a project to archive materials from the organization’s 50+ year history. CC has amassed exhibition catalogs, postcards, newspaper clippings, artist files, and documents relevant to the organization and furthermore, the field of contemporary craft since the 1970s.

Programs utilizing the archive will begin in 2025, and the archive—both online and in a physical space—will be available as a resource for researchers, artists, and members of the public who wish to learn more about the craft field or specific artists who have shown their work at CC in the past 50 years.

RESIDENT ARTIST

ALISHA WORMSLEY

Do you have a favorite memory, experience, or class from your time with Contemporary Craft?

I love the constant excitement and general community support there is in learning new skills. During the series of weaving classes I have taken there has been so much fun and humor and excitement around learning this craft by the whole group. I love learning why everyone is attracted to this and what they want to make and why. The jokes that carry us through the learning process.

What classes have you taken, and how have they impacted your artistic practice?

“ Everyone and every skill is supported and encouraged there.

All of the multi week weaving classes. Basket weaving, needle felting, natural dyeing and woodblock printing, hand ceramics, sculptural basket weaving, bobbin lace weaving. I hope to start metal classes in the winter. Most of my work is shifting into this space. I’m excited to bring these forms together with video and sound. I’m planning a whole body of work and a film around what skills I am learning and inspired by the communities connected to this. I am so grateful for the openness and ease CC showed me and made this time possible for me. I can’t begin to tell you how much it means to me, my emotional well being and my artistic practice.

If you were talking to someone thinking about taking a class at Contemporary Craft, what would you tell them?

Members of the sold-out Weaving 1 series from Spring 2023 (Alisha pictured front right). They created multiple woven samplers and developed strong bonds with each other throughout the series. Here they are on the last day of class, posing with The Edna (big floor loom) and some of their finished pieces.

It’s my happy place for sure. The one thing I despise about “ART” is how alienating it is. How it makes expression something you have to go to art school for, how competitive it becomes, based on capitalism. CC makes things accessible. Everyone and every skill is supported and encouraged there.

THREE WONDERFUL DAYS A YEAR

CC hosts three Community Days each year with hands-on activities, demonstrations, and exhibition tours for visitors of all ages and abilities.

Thank you!
