CENTRAL COAST WRITERS and THE LITERATURE OF PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT FROM BIG SUR TO OJAI, GREAT WRITERS AND SEERS SUCH AS ALDOUS HUXLEY, HENRY MILLER, JACK KEROUAC AND ROBINSON JEFFERS HAVE ALL CALLED THE CENTRAL COAST THEIR HOME.
Their works and ideas created the “counter-culture” and set into motion a literature of liberation and personal growth that swept the world. This course is designed for those inspired by these writers and want to reconnect to their energy and idealism. The course is also intended those discovering the “best coast” writers on their own who would like a bit more formal introduction. This is not a course,
however, about our glorious literary past but rather about what is still here and emerging from it. Through lectures, discussions and the reading of excerpts, we will examine the best that has been thought and said by the West Coast artists of personal growth and liberation. The goal is to throw light upon the relevance of their work to our own lives and to the originality inherent in our own contemporary experiences. In a world increasingly divided “into tiny colonies of the saved,” the visionary literature of the Central Coast can serve as a healthy antidote to the dispiriting stereotypes of our age while deepening our ties to the land, our community, and one another.
Final meeting for all three classes is April 10, 6-8 p.m., to help plan possible future courses or events (Steinbeck, Jeffers, Krishnamurti , the Literature of Big Sur, Esalen, et al.)

CHILDREN’S PICTURE BOOK WRITING II WHEN
Let’s gather to critique, strengthen and rewrite our picture book manuscripts. This class meets weekly for five two-hour working sessions. Participants should be prepared to contribute a completed or nearly completed manuscript before the beginning of the first class. These manuscripts will be shared with all class members via e-mail prior to our first meeting so that class time can be maximized for constructive suggestions and rewriting. We will do “big picture” edits as well as line edits. We will also investigate publishers for submission and contracts.

CALIFORNIA WINE APPRECIATION Learn to be a wine connoisseur. Do you know the difference between a Merlot and a Cabernet? This course provides basic knowledge and experience in taste discrimination of a variety of Central Coast and other California wines. Learn the sensory evaluation of various components in wine as well as the varietal characteristics of wine produced on the Central Coast and elsewhere in California.

EUROPEAN WINE APPRECIATION WHEN
Learn how geography and climate influence wine from various regions across Europe.
We will be focusing on French wines from Bordeaux, Burgundy, Rhone and Southern France, plus Loire, Alsace and Champagne. We will also be covering Italian and Spanish wines. Learn how to read and interpret European wine labels and discover what sets European wines apart from those in California. It’s recommended to have taken the California Wine Appreciation or another basic wine appreciation course prior to taking this course.

DRAWING and SKETCHING PETS, ANIMALS and BIRDS This six-week class will show you how to use a variety of drawing and sketching media to portray animals and birds in their environments. Simple ways to assess proportions will be demonstrated along with all the media. You will also learn how to simplify and depict fur, feathers, backgrounds and any other details needed to make these drawings and sketches of your chosen subjects. You will be working mostly from your own photographs (photos taken with a flash are more difficult to use), or with instructor-provided photos if you prefer.

DRAWING WITH MIXED MEDIA WHEN
In this six week class, you will use charcoal and gouache (gwash) to make painterly drawings of still life subjects or interiors. This is an experimental drawing class where you are strongly encouraged to express your vision of the subject throughout the process. The still life subjects will be set up and lit from one side for dimension; your choice or the instructor’s. Photographs will be used for interior subjects (yours or the instructor’s, as you wish). You will draw the subjects with charcoal on tinted or white paper and add accent color and tonal areas with gouache paint. You will choose a range of color accents to enhance your mostly tonal drawings. Your paper selection will add to the color, texture and tonal appearance of the final drawings.

ISLAM’S ORIGINS TO THE GOLDEN AGE Within a century, Islam grew from a local Arab religion to the largest empire the world had ever known. This course tells the story of this fantastic rise, based on the latest historical research. We share the surprising reasons why Islam spread so quickly, detail the formation of the Quran, and explore how a new religion struggled to define itself on the world stage. The course ends with the Golden Age of Islam, when Muslims formed the most advanced and cultured civilization in the world.
