our future plans Dear Community Member, We understand and appreciate that some members of our community will be disappointed that Cal Poly Extended Education has made the difficult decision to phase out its noncredit life and culture classes. Our talented instructors have delivered great classes to passionate lifelong learners for many years, and it’s difficult for everyone to say goodbye. As we transition to the future, our focus will be to deliver high quality innovative academic programs, technical education and professional training programs that will enable our alumni and others in our regional workforce to reskill and upskill in today’s technology-driven marketplace. For our community members who have enjoyed our life and culture classes, we reference other sources of these classes in our community, including Cuesta College’s Community Education Programs, Allan Hancock College’s Community Education & Programs, and the San Luis Coastal Adult School. Sincerely, Dr. Brian Tietje Vice Provost for International, Graduate and Extended Education

Drawing and Painting WITH TRICIA REICHERT Tricia Reichert obtained her teaching credentials from Battersea College of Education, University of London. Although she had always been keenly interested in art, most of her artistic expressions were made through her chosen major of home economics and minor of textile art. When more time became available, Reichert developed her true passion for art and for the past 30 years has studied and practiced drawing and painting in a wide variety of media. She specializes in portrait art in pastel and watercolor. Her other areas of expertise and interest include many forms of printmaking and figurative sculpture. Reichert also teaches a wide range of classes, workshops and individual students. She uses her broad experience and a highly developed, natural teaching ability to present all material and explanations in the most accessible way. She believes that in art, as in writing, a developed vocabulary and an understanding of grammar are fundamental requirements for self-expression. In art, the vocabulary can be attributed to the use of the materials, while the grammar may be considered the design and composition of the finished work. “My aim as an art teacher is always to devise and present the fundamental vocabulary and grammar of art related skills, (in drawing, painting, sculpture and printmaking) in ways that make them accessible and easy to understand, she said.

Writing WITH CINDY NEUSCHWANDER Cindy Neuschwander has written 17 published children’s picture books. Her work includes the Sir Cumference series, “Amanda Bean’s Amazing Dream,” “Mummy Math” and “Pastry School in Paris.” Her books have been reviewed by the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, School Library Journal and Publisher’s Weekly. Neuschwander began writing books in 1994. She had used math literature in her own elementary classes and wanted to use these kind of books. There were not many available so she started writing some of her own. Neuschwander’s writing career was born after she enrolled in a writing class at a nearby university to better communicate her ideas. Her books are published by Charlesbridge Publishing, Henry Holt and Co. and Scholastic Corp.

“So many times over the past four years, I have heard my students say, ‘I’ve always wanted to write a children’s picture book. When I saw your classes offered, I knew I had to sign up.’ It has been my professional pleasure to share my knowledge of this genre through the Cal Poly Extended Education program.
