Single Subject Teaching Credential

WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF TEACHING! BY BECOMING A TEACHER, YOU HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO SHAPE THE FUTURE AND TO IGNITE PEOPLE’S PASSION IN YOUR SUBJECT AREA. LIKE ANY PROFESSION, TEACHING REQUIRES ADVANCED STUDY IN THE FIELD OF EDUCATION AS WELL AS DEEPENING CONTENT KNOWLEDGE IN YOUR SUBJECT SPECIALIZATION. 8


By entering Cal Poly’s Single Subject Credential Program (SSCP), you will have the opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills that will contribute to your success as a classroom teacher. Candidates who complete the Single Subject program earn a Preliminary Single Subject Teaching Credential that is English Language Learner Authorized in one of the eight specialization areas: Agriculture, Biology, Chemistry, English, Geosciences (Earth and Planetary), Mathematics, Physics, and Social Science. What makes this program unique is that you will complete a yearlong clinical experience at a middle or high school, working closely with a cooperating teacher. This credential allows you to teach your subject specific specialization in California classrooms. A Single Subject credential can be earned in three to four quarters of full-time enrollment.

Agriculture Specialist

THE AGRICULTURE SPECIALIST CREDENTIAL, IN CONCERT WITH THE SINGLE SUBJECT IN AGRICULTURE CREDENTIAL, CERTIFIES A CANDIDATE FOR

INSTRUCTION IN ALL AREAS OF AGRICULTURE IN CALIFORNIA PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS. 10


The credential is offered through the Agricultural Education and Communication Department in the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences.

THE AGRICULTURE SPECIALIST CREDENTIAL PREPARES CANDIDATES AS SPECIALISTS WHO WILL LEAD COMPLEX PROGRAMS OF INSTRUCTION. Such programs include classroom instruction, leadership development through Career Technical Student Organizations, and project-based learning opportunities for students. The credential attests that the candidate is prepared to develop a program that meets the quality criteria in agricultural education. Many of the advanced courses required for credentialing can also be applied toward the Master of Agricultural Education degree.

Multiple Subject Teaching Credential

DO YOU WANT TO PLAY A MAJOR ROLE IN AFFECTING THE FUTURE BY HELPING YOUNG PEOPLE LEARN AND DEVELOP TO THEIR POTENTIAL? 12


THE MULTIPLE SUBJECT TEACHER EDUCATION PREPARATION (MSTEP) PROGRAM, IS DESIGNED FOR PEOPLE WHO WANT TO BE K-6 CLASSROOM TEACHERS. The program provides rich opportunities for prospective teachers to learn to effectively orchestrate classroom activity and instruction with diverse populations of students. Teacher candidates in the program will be guided in university-based coursework by expert teacherscholars in their respective fields, to develop knowledge about teaching practice and skills. Teacher candidates also spend substantial classroom time working alongside teachers to put their knowledge into practice, and have opportunities to learn to teach in the primary grades (K-3) as well as the upper elementary

school grades (3-6). Candidates typically complete their Multiple Subject professional education coursework and student teaching experiences within three quarters of full-time enrollment. Our graduating candidates typically report that they feel very well prepared to teach, and surveys of administrators have indicated that they perceive Cal Poly MSTEP Program graduates as being very well prepared. Bilingual Authorization Program

CANDIDATES IN THE SPANISH AUTHORIZATION FOR BILINGUAL EDUCATORS (SABE) PROGRAM EARN

A BILINGUAL AUTHORIZATION THAT CAN BE ADDED TO ANY CALIFORNIA TEACHING CREDENTIAL. THIS AUTHORIZATION ALLOWS TEACHERS TO PROVIDE INSTRUCTION IN STUDENTS’ PRIMARY LANGUAGE (SPANISH) AND ENGLISH. 14


THE SABE PROGRAM’S PRIMARY GOALS INCLUDE BILINGUALISM, BI-LITERACY, CROSS-CULTURAL UNDERSTANDING, AND HIGH ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT FOR EMERGENT BILINGUALS.

The SABE program is designed to provide opportunities for candidates to develop the knowledge, skills, and abilities to become effective bilingual education teachers. Program graduates will create effective and inclusive learning environments for linguistically and culturally diverse students. Earning this authorization will allow teachers to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving and increasingly multicultural society. Candidates typically start the Bilingual Authorization Program courses in the fall and finish in the spring.

Counseling and Guidance

THE MASTER OF ARTS IN EDUCATION, SPECIALIZATION IN COUNSELING AND GUIDANCE IS DESIGNED TO PREPARE STUDENTS FOR CAREERS WORKING AS COUNSELORS/STUDENT AFFAIRS PROFESSIONALS IN HIGHER EDUCATION SETTINGS.

The program meets the American College Personnel Association (ACPA, 2003) Professional Preparation Commission standards and the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS, 2015). Completion of the degree also meets the educational requirements for those seeking positions as counselors in the California community college system.

Students attending full-time complete the 72-unit program in two years; students attending the program part-time typically complete the program in three years. The program has a strong counseling and helping professional emphasis. In addition to extensive lab practice during coursework focusing on these skills, students complete extensive internship experiences in at least two different settings during the second year of the program. The settings where internships take place can be either within our local region or throughout California. CULMINATING EVENT: THESIS OR EXAM

THE CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION SPECIALIZATION IS DESIGNED TO SUPPORT EDUCATORS IN UNDERSTANDING FOUNDATIONAL IDEAS AND RESEARCH-BASED PRACTICES NECESSARY TO FOSTER STUDENT DEVELOPMENT OF DEEP UNDERSTANDING AND THE MULTIPLE LITERACIES THEY NEED TO MEET THE DEMANDS OF THE 21ST CENTURY.

It is led by a group of faculty with interest and expertise in PreK-12 teaching practice for diverse learners. Join us in collaboration as a professional learning community with the common goal of advancing our collective understanding of the nature of classroom practice required to address the ambitious academic standards that are the focus of today’s classrooms. A culminating activity in this specialization is an action research project, which means program candidates will

identify a “problem” of teaching practice, devise a “solution” to it, and study the effects of its implementation. Candidates who complete the program will be in a position to assume curriculum design and/or instructional leadership roles, lead professional development opportunities in their schools or districts, or pursue graduate work at the doctoral level. Educational Leadership and Administration

THE MASTER OF ARTS IN EDUCATION, SPECIALIZATION IN EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP AND ADMINISTRATION IS DESIGNED PRIMARILY FOR K-12 LEADERS. IT IS ALSO BENEFICIAL FOR LEADERS FROM OTHER FIELDS; INCLUDING SPORTS ADMINISTRATION, TEACHER LEADERSHIP, HIGHER EDUCATION, AND NONPROFIT LEADERSHIP. 20


THE PROGRAM EMPHASIZES • Applied theories of educational leadership • Mastery of practical skills required for effective leadership and administration • Competence in research methods necessary for understanding and assessing learning organizations

Qualified candidates who meet standards established by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing can earn the California Preliminary Administrative Services Credential with the master’s degree. Coursework for the master’s degree is delivered in “fast track” format, designed to meet the needs of working adult learners. The Fast-Track program allows students to complete the master’s degree in just 16 weekends (Friday evenings and all day Saturdays) and a five-week summer session during an 11-month period. Although accelerated, this is a rigorous, practical program that requires serious academic commitment on the part of interested applicants. CULMINATING EVENT: EXAM

M.A. IN EDUC ATION: SPECIALIZ ATION IN

Special Educ ation

The Master of Arts in Education, Specialization in Special Education is an integrated Master’s/Credential program that prepares candidates to earn a preliminary special education credential in mild-moderate disabilities while concurrently allowing them to probe more deeply regarding one mildmoderate disability such as autism. The program requires advanced study in the field of education as well as a deepening content knowledge in subject specialization. 22

By entering Cal Poly’s Integrated M.A. in Education/Education Specialist Mild Moderate Credential Program (M.A./EDSP), students have the opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills that will contribute to their success as special day class teachers, resource specialists, inclusion specialists, autism specialists, or clinicians. CULMINATING EVENT: EXAM
