HOW TO PAINT IN WATERCOLOR This introduction class for beginners will give you a very broad overview of painting in this wonderfully expressive medium. You will start by learning some of the main techniques involved in painting with watercolor. Then, using a limited number of colors, you will learn how to mix and use these colors to paint flowers, fruit, glass, skies, water, trees, rocks, landscapes and simple buildings. Working on small paintings and receiving step-by-step instructions throughout this class will ensure that you progress very quickly. First, you will watch how to paint each step and then you will paint. Each week you will take home one or two small completed paintings. In this way, you will also learn how composition works in painting. 3

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR Tricia Reichert earned her formal teaching credentials from Battersea College, University of London. She specializes in the art of portraiture in pastel and watercolor. Her other areas of expertise and interest include many forms of printmaking and figurative sculpture. Reichert also teaches a wide range of classes, workshops and individual students. In teaching, she uses her broad experience and highly developed, natural teaching ability to present all material and explanations in the most accessible way.

PAINTING WITH PASTELS Whether you are a beginner starting your study of art or an advanced artist looking to explore a different medium, this four-week class will provide you with a strong foundation in the creation of paintings using soft pastels. This painting medium is direct and easy to use. Soft pastels are the purest form of artist color, made almost exclusively from pure pigment with only enough binder to allow them to be formed into usable sticks. In this class, through weekly demonstrations, you will learn how to paint a landscape, a still life with flowers and fruit, a seascape and an animal or bird in soft pastel.

SAUSAGE MAKING Learn how to make your own delicious sausages in Cal Poly’s J and G Lau Family Meat Processing Center, home to state-of-the-art facilities for product development. In this workshop, participants will work with resident managers to learn the history and art of making sausage from fresh ingredients — some of which are grown right on campus. Participants will learn how to make a variety of sausages, be given tips on how to create their own recipes, and will leave the workshop knowing how to safely prepare sausage at home.

CHEESE MAKING: A EUROPEAN AND AMERICAN TASTING ADVENTURE Come experience the taste of European cheeses and their American counterparts. You will learn about the history of cheese, methods of manufacture, and how milk from different mammals and simple changes to the manufacturing steps make the thousands of varieties of cheese we know and enjoy today. Participants will make Gouda cheese in the Cal Poly dairy plant and learn how to be cheesemakers.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR David Everett, Ph.D., is the Leprino Endowed Professor in the dairy products technology program within the Animal Science Department and director of the Dairy Innovation Institute Research Center.

Everett worked on dairy industry projects at a federal government research center in Australia to help develop a technology to manufacture hard cheese from ultra-filtered milk. He was also employed at an industry-funded company as a science liaison manager to bring together publicly funded researchers with the dairy industry to solve technical and scientific problems.

WORLD RELIGIONS LECTURE SERIES Religions are not objects of curiosity to be perused like artifacts in a museum. Rather, they are lived experiences that provide profound meaning for those within them. Our religious traditions have endured for so many years because they have profoundly touched so many lives. Our study together is ultimately about these people — roughly two-thirds of the world population whose lives are inextricably tied to their religious traditions and history. This lecture series not only teaches the facts of religions, it strives to showcase the practitioners’ world views and dispel some common myths and misconceptions regarding each religion.

ISLAM AND MODERNITY The signs of Islam’s struggle with the modern world often are on display during the nightly news as stories about ISIS, Iran, Turkey or the Persian Gulf make headlines. However, there are many other positive storylines that do not receive as much coverage. This course peers behind and beyond the headlines to understand the ways in which Islam has faced a rapidly changing world.

A dynamic, popular community lecturer, he is the recipient the Cal Poly College of Liberal Arts teaching award and the President’s Community Service Award. Author of “Beauty for Ashes: The Spiritual Transformation of a Modern Greek Community” and the forthcoming “The Soul of Wine: In Vino Sanctus,” Professor Lloyd-Moffett holds an M.A. in religious studies from UC Santa Barbara, a Master of Theology from St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary, and a doctorate in Religious Studies from UC Santa Barbara.

ALTERNATIVE PROCESS PHOTOGRAPHY Explore alternative photographic processes as you learn to produce photographs in non-traditional ways. This hands-on class explores historic photographic processes such as the cyanotype, pinhole photography, and the photo transfer process through an introduction to the materials and the creation and evaluation of the photographic image. This is an introductory photography course. Through a series of hands-on demonstrations and exercises, students will learn the basics of alternative photographic processes to produce one-of-a-kind works of art. We will cover the essential components of image-making as it relates to fine art and photographic media. Students must bring 1 roll of 35mm color film. Other materials will be provided by the instructor.

CENTRAL COAST WRITERS and THE LITERATURE OF PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT Great writers and seers such as Aldous Huxley, Henry Miller, Jack Kerouac and Robinson Jeffers have all called the Central Coast their home. Their works and ideas created the “counter-culture” and set into motion a literature of liberation and personal growth that swept the world. This course is designed for those inspired by these writers and want to reconnect to their energy and idealism. The course is also intended for those discovering the “best coast” writers on their own who would like a bit more formal introduction. This is not a course about our glorious literary
past but rather about what is still here and emerging from it. Through lectures, discussions and the reading of excerpts, we will examine the best that has been thought and said by the West Coast artists about personal growth and liberation. The goal is to throw light upon the relevance of their work to our own lives and to the originality inherent in our own contemporary experiences. In a world increasingly divided “into tiny colonies of the saved,” the visionary literature of the Central Coast can serve as a healthy antidote to the dispiriting stereotypes of our age while deepening our ties to the land, our community and one another.

WRITE YOUR WAY AROUND THE WORLD We dream of sipping cappuccinos in Florence while writing. The reality: blow-drying your hand-washed underwear in a Zimbabwe hotel so you can pack and hit the road. Freelancing from abroad may not be glamorous, but it is an adventure. In this workshop, Katya Cengel, Cal Poly and UC Berkeley journalism instructor, will teach students how to pitch an article to an editor, query an agent about a book, negotiate a contract with a publisher, and more. Having traveled the world writing, Cengel not only has excellent insights into the realities of making a living as a writer, but she also knows from experience that the adventure is worth it.

CHILDREN’S PICTURE BOOK WRITING I Have you ever wanted to write a children’s picture book? Join published author and teacher Cindy Neuschwander and learn about this writing genre. Five two-hour sessions cover all aspects of writing, editing and publishing your manuscript. Topics covered in this class include an overview of the picture book from first ideas to published books, the history of picture books, character, the mind of the child, narrative structures, story skeletons, illustrations, editing, submissions and publishing contracts. Her work includes the “Sir Cumference” series, “Amanda Bean’s Amazing Dream, ” “Mummy Math” and “Pastry School in Paris.” Her books have been reviewed by The New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the School Library Journal and Publisher’s Weekly. Neuschwander began writing books in 1994. She enrolled in a writing class at a nearby university and learned how to better communicate her ideas. This is where her writing career was born. Now her books are published by Charlesbridge, Henry Holt and Scholastic.

JEWELRY DESIGN This is an introductory jewelry design course exploring cold connections in metal arts. The focus of this class is on contemporary methods to create unique jewelry designs. By the end of this five-session class, students will feel comfortable with varying methods of producing jewelry in new ways — from electroforming a bangle bracelet to creating wirewrapped briolette ear-rings to creating wearable art with mixed metals and fiber. Through a series of hands-on demonstrations and exercises, students will learn the basics of contemporary cold-connection jewelry design, allowing them to produce one-of-a-kind works of art. We will cover the essential components of jewelry design as it relates to wearable art and metal arts.

MATH ACADEMY The Cal Poly Math Academy provides enrichment activities WHEN to ensure participants are well prepared to meet future Monday - Friday 5 sessions academic challenges. The Math Academy welcomes July 23 – 27 students from diverse mathematical backgrounds and 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. problem-solving processes. Participants will work on fun, rich tasks that include multiple access points, multiple methods of solving the problem, hands-on components, collaboration and communication.
