By Bishop ArcherAS THE LOCAL ELECTIONS for Josephine and Jackson Counties in Oregon draw near on May 21st, it’s essential for senior citizens to participate in the democratic process by casting their votes. However, for seniors who may face challenges with mobility or transportation, ensuring a smooth voting experience requires careful planning. Here are some practical tips to help seniors navigate the voting process easily, safely, and on time:
Know Your Voting Options
Seniors have several voting options available to them, including:
Early Voting – Check if early voting is offered in your county. This allows you to vote at designated locations before Election Day, providing flexibility and convenience.
Vote by Mail – In Oregon, all registered voters receive mail-in ballots. Ensure your ballot is completed accurately and returned by mail or at designated drop-off locations before the deadline.
Plan Ahead for Transportation
Transportation can be a significant concern for seniors, especially those living in rural areas or without access to personal vehicles. Consider the following strategies:
Utilize Public Transportation – Check local bus schedules or transportation services available for seniors. Some organizations offer free or discounted rides to polling places on Election Day.
Arrange a Ride – Coordinate with family
members, friends, or caregivers to arrange transportation to the polling station. Plan the trip in advance to avoid last-minute issues.
Verify Polling Locations and Hours
Ensure you know where to vote and the operating hours of polling stations near you:
Check Voting Information – Visit the official county election website or contact the county clerk’s office to verify your polling location and hours of operation.

Find Accessible Polling Stations – If you have mobility concerns, inquire about accessible polling locations equipped with ramps or other accommodations.
Stay Informed About Candidates and Issues
Take time to research local candidates and ballot measures:
Review Voter Guides – Access voter guides provided by local newspapers, organizations, or online resources to understand the positions of candidates and implications of ballot measures.
Attend Candidate Forums – If possible, attend candidate forums or town hall meetings to hear directly from candidates about their platforms and priorities.
Seek Assistance if Needed
Don’t hesitate to ask for help:
Request Special Assistance – Polling stations are equipped to assist voters with disabilities or special needs. Inform poll
workers if you require assistance or have questions about the voting process.
Bring Necessary Documentation – Bring a valid ID or required documentation as per local voting regulations.
Encourage and Support Fellow Seniors
Promote voter participation:
Spread the Word – Share voting information with friends, neighbors, or fellow residents in assisted living facilities to encourage turnout.
Offer Assistance – Offer to assist others with transportation or navigating the voting process if needed.
Participating in local elections is a fundamental right and responsibility for citizens of all ages. By following these tips and making informed decisions, seniors in Josephine and Jackson Counties can ensure their voices are heard in shaping their communities’ future. Remember, every vote counts, and together, we can make a difference in our local elections on May 21.

Embracing Spring
Gardening tips for seniors in assisted living
By Jasmin KahlilAS APRIL SHOWERS give way to May flowers, the arrival of spring brings renewed opportunities for seniors to embrace the joys of gardening. Whether you reside in an assisted living facility or have limited outdoor space, this is the perfect time to cultivate herbs and flowers that can thrive on small patios, decks, or windowsills. Living in the Southern Oregon climate presents unique challenges, but with thoughtful planning and care, seniors can create beautiful and rewarding garden spaces.
Gardening offers numerous physical, mental, and emotional benefits for seniors. It provides a gentle form of exercise, promoting flexibility, strength, and mobility. Spending time outdoors in the sunlight can also boost mood and vitamin D levels, which are essential for bone health and overall well-being. Gardening is known to reduce stress, anxiety, and feelings of isolation, fostering a sense of purpose and connection with nature.
For seniors in assisted living facilities with limited space, selecting the right plants is crucial. Opt for low-maintenance herbs and flowers that thrive in containers and require minimal care. Some excellent choices for Southern Oregon’s climate include:
Herbs – Basil, mint, rosemary, and thyme are resilient herbs that flourish in containers and can be used in cooking or for aromatic purposes.
Flowers – Marigolds, petunias, geraniums, and pansies are colorful flowers that add vibrancy to small spaces and are relatively easy to maintain.
Container Gardening Tips
Container gardening is ideal for seniors as it allows for flexibility and accessibility. Here are some tips to get started:
Choose the Right Containers – Use lightweight pots or containers with adequate drainage holes to prevent overwatering.
Select Quality Soil – Use a well-draining potting mix enriched with compost to provide essential nutrients for plant growth.
Placement – Position containers in areas that receive adequate sunlight based on plant requirements.
Watering – Check soil moisture regularly and water plants when the top inch feels dry. Avoid overwatering, especially in Southern Oregon’s variable climate.
Adapting to Assisted Living Spaces
Living in an assisted facility shouldn’t deter seniors from enjoying gardening. Many facilities welcome garden projects and offer accessible areas for residents to pursue their green thumb. Consider these strategies:
Community Gardens – Inquire if the facility has a designated gardening space where residents can participate in group activities.
Indoor Gardens – Utilize windowsills or indoor spaces to grow small potted plants or herb gardens.
Vertical Gardening – Explore vertical gardening techniques using wall-mounted planters or hanging baskets.
Tips for Success
To ensure gardening success in Southern Oregon’s climate, seniors should consider the following:
Weather Awareness – Stay informed about local weather conditions to protect plants from sudden temperature changes or excessive heat.
Seasonal Variations – Be mindful of seasonal transitions and adapt gardening practices accordingly.
Regular Maintenance – Dedicate time for routine care, including watering, pruning, and monitoring for pests or diseases.
Enjoying the Fruits of Your Labor
As your garden flourishes, take time to appreciate the beauty and tranquility it brings. Engage in sensory experiences by touching, smelling, and observing your plants. Share your gardening journey with fellow residents, family, and friends. Consider using herbs and flowers from your garden to enhance meals or create homemade potpourri.
Gardening is a delightful and therapeutic activity that seniors can enjoy year-round, especially during the spring months. By embracing container gardening and adapting to assisted living spaces, seniors in Southern Oregon can cultivate a sense of purpose, connection, and joy through nurturing plants and witnessing their growth. So, seize the opportunity this season to plant seeds of happiness and watch your garden bloom!

• 2 cups gluten-free all-purpose flour
• 1 teaspoon baking powder
• ½ teaspoon baking soda
• ½ teaspoon salt
• ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
• 1 cup granulated sugar
• 2 large eggs
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

• 2 tablespoons gluten-free all-purpose flour (for coating Marionberries)
1) Prepare Hollandaise Sauce: In a blender or food processor, combine the egg yolks and lemon juice. Blend until smooth. With the blender running, slowly drizzle in the melted butter until the sauce is thick and creamy. Season with cayenne pepper and salt to taste. Keep warm until ready to serve. 2) Cook Beef Tenderloin Filets: Preheat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the seasoned filets to desired doneness (medium-rare is recommended for best flavor), approximately 4-5 minutes per side. Remove from heat and let rest. 3) Poach Eggs: Bring a large pot of water to a simmer. Crack each egg into a small bowl or ramekin. Carefully slide each egg into the simmering water. Poach for 3-4 minutes until the whites are set but the yolks are still runny. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. 4) Prepare Asparagus: In the same pan used to cook the beef, add the trimmed asparagus spears. Season with salt and pepper. Cook for 3-4 minutes until tender-crisp. 5) Assemble: Place a toasted English muffin half on each plate. Top each muffin half with a grilled beef tenderloin filet. Blackberry Mimosas
If you find yourself with an abundance of blackberries from those wild bushes creeping over your fence in Southern Oregon, fear not! Instead of battling the brambles, why not turn these juicy gems into delightful Blackberry Mimosas? This refreshing cocktail is perfect for celebrating the bounty of nature while enjoying a taste of summer in every sip.
INSTRUCTIONS:

INGREDIENTS:
• Fresh blackberries
• Champagne or sparkling wine
• Orange juice
• Sugar or honey
Prepare the Blackberry Puree: 1) Start by rinsing and draining a handful of fresh blackberries. 2) In a blender or food processor, combine the blackberries with a splash of orange juice and a touch of sugar or honey if desired. 3) Blend until smooth to create a vibrant blackberry puree. Strain the puree through a fine mesh sieve to remove any seeds for a smoother texture. Mix the Blackberry Mimosa:
1) Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan. In a medium bowl, whisk together the gluten-free all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside. 3) In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. 4) Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract. 5) Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with buttermilk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined. 6) Toss the Marionberries in 2 tablespoons of gluten-free all-purpose flour to coat them. This helps prevent them from sinking to the bottom of the cake. 7) Gently fold the floured Marionberries into the batter. 8) Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan, spreading it evenly. 9) Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. 10) While the cake is baking, prepare the Marionberry sauce. In a saucepan over medium heat, combine Marionberries, granulated sugar, lemon juice, and water. Simmer for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the berries break down and the sauce thickens. Remove from heat and let it cool. 11) Once the cake is done, remove it from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely. 12) Drizzle the Marionberry sauce over the cooled cake before serving. Slice and enjoy the delicious taste of the Pacific Northwest in this gluten-free Marionberry cake!
1) Chill your champagne flutes in the freezer for a few minutes to keep your mimosas frosty. 2) Pour a spoonful of the blackberry puree into each flute, depending on how fruity you like your mimosa.
3) Fill the glass halfway with chilled champagne or sparkling wine. 4) Top off with freshly squeezed orange juice, leaving a bit of space at the top to avoid spillage.
