By: John OliverMark Jones, a candidate for Josephine County Commissioner Position 2, offers a candid reflection on his journey and vision for the county’s future. In a departure from conventional campaign rhetoric, Jones admits to the challenge of self-promotion, preferring others to attest to his character and capabilities. Nevertheless, he endeavors to convey his background and aspirations. Jones traces his roots back to 1971 when his family relocated to Josephine County. Raised in a large family, he fondly recalls his upbringing in Murphy, cherishing the memories of his early years. His educational journey led him through various schools in the county, culminating in his graduation from Hidden Valley High School in 1988.
Opting for a different path after high school, Jones ventured into the grocery business before finding his calling in the fire service in 1991. Over the years, he served with dedication, including a stint in Arizona, before returning to his hometown in 2018. His commitment to public service led him to roles in the Josephine County Assessor’s Office and Rural Metro Fire Department.

Jones’s involvement in a fire district proposal shed light on the county’s challenges, prompting his decision to pursue a leadership role. Despite being a relative newcomer to the political arena, he garnered significant
Letter from Chris Barnett for County Commissioner
Dear Residents of Josephine County,
I am pleased to share with you the success and impactful representation we achieved during the recent National Legislative Day for the United States Air Force Civil Air Patrol on Capitol Hill.
Last week marked a significant event for us as we proudly represented one of the largest Squadrons in the State of Oregon, situated in Grants Pass. Our mission was clear: to advocate for the invaluable services our organization provides, including Emergency Services, Aerospace education, and Cadet Programs for youths.
As a non-profit organization committed to the betterment of our community, it’s noteworthy that our services come at no cost to those we serve. However, the essential equipment and vehicles we rely on are funded through Congress under a dedicated line item from the Air Force budget. The Civil Air Patrol, with roots tracing back to the United States Defense Force, has been steadfast in its commitment to the nation’s welfare.
Presently, the USAF Civil Air Patrol operates the world’s largest fleet of Cessna aircraft, with over 500 actively flying in all 50 states and territories. During our visit to Capitol Hill, we engaged in productive discussions with influential figures such as Representative Cliff Bentz, Senator Ron Wyden, and other representatives throughout the state. Their positive feedback underscores our reputation for providing standby service to our country when needed.
Our agenda included an enlightening tour of the United States Capitol, attendance at a Senate hearing, a visit to the Supreme Court, and an insightful session in the House of Representatives. Despite the length of the day, both Cadets and Senior members thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

In addition to these activities, we conducted our Board of Governor’s meeting and our Command Council. My Commander and I proudly represented our six Pacific States – Oregon, California, Nevada, Washington, Alaska, and Hawaii – among the 450 individuals representing their respective States and territories. This gathering provided an excellent opportunity for networking and mentorship, particularly benefiting our Youth Cadets.
I am honored to serve as the Pacific Region Command Chief, contributing to Josephine County’s Emergency Services team without incurring costs to our taxpayers. I encourage you to support your local Civil Air Patrol in Merlin, where we continue to represent and provide a valuable, cost-free resource to the community.
Thank you for your attention and ongoing support.

Grants Pass rising grocery prices
Residents left struggling to make ends meet
By: Seth ProvostResidents continue to express their dismay at the persistently soaring prices of everyday essentials. A recent trip to the Albertson’s grocery store highlighted the severity of the issue, with one piece of fish and four bananas totaling $18.00. In 2022, the exact same items amounted to a mere $5.15. From eggs to bananas, it appears that the cost of living is on an upward spiral, raising concerns among families on a budget and those on fixed incomes.
One shopper, who recently visited Albertson’s, reported that the prices of eggs have reached an astonishing $5.99 and above. Expressing disbelief, they questioned whether these eggs were produced by golden chickens. Adding to the frustration, liquid egg whites have surged to a staggering $8.00, marking a 60% increase that caught many by surprise.
While grocery prices have experienced fluctuations over the years, the sudden surge in the cost of liquid eggs is leaving shoppers bewildered. The situation is further exacerbated by the recent surge in banana prices, which has seen a remarkable 70% increase, according to disgruntled shoppers who are quick to attribute this spike to “Bidenomics.”
This unprecedented rise in grocery prices is not just an inconvenience; it has serious implications for families on a budget and individuals relying on fixed incomes. The struggle to put food on the table becomes more challenging as essential items become increasingly unaffordable.
The impact is widespread, as families find it difficult to save or get ahead when faced with such steep price hikes. The situation is becoming, quite literally, bananas, making it nearly impossible for people to provide for themselves and their families without sacrificing other necessities.
Many are left wondering whether this is yet another example of regular Americans being pushed to the brink by price gouging. The question arises: what can be done to adapt and overcome this growing problem? As shoppers struggle with the consequences of rising grocery prices, it becomes imperative for policymakers and local authorities to address the root causes and explore solutions to mitigate the financial strain on households.
In the face of this challenging economic landscape, it is clear that action is needed to ensure the affordability of basic necessities for all. As Grants Pass residents grapple with the repercussions of these price increases, the call for a comprehensive and sustainable solution grows louder, as regular Americans look for ways to weather the storm of soaring grocery prices.

The puzzling net worths of politicians earning less than $200,000 annually
By: Leaf BarretIn a not so shocking but concerning revelation that raises eyebrows and sparks questions about the financial affairs of public officials, several politicians with annual salaries below $200,000 boast staggering net worths well into the tens and hundreds of millions. The incongruity between their official salaries and personal fortunes has prompted scrutiny and demands for transparency.
The list of politicians with eye-popping net worths includes notable figures from both major political parties. J.B. Pritzker, the Democratic Governor of Illinois, leads the pack with a reported net worth of $3.4 billion. Former Republican President Donald Trump follows closely with a net worth of $2 billion. Other affluent politicians on the list include Doug Burgum (Republican, Governor of North Dakota - $1.1B), Darrell Issa (Republican, Representative for CA 48th District - $460M), and Jim Justice (Republican, Governor of West Virginia - $450M), among others.
The vast wealth accumulated by politicians whose salaries
ostensibly don’t match their net worths has prompted a wave of scrutiny and calls for greater financial transparency. Critics argue that such financial disparities raise questions about the sources of income, potential conflicts of interest, and the need for stricter regulations on politicians’ financial disclosures.
Ethics watchdogs and advocacy groups are urging for comprehensive investigations into the financial dealings of these politicians to ensure that their wealth has been acquired through legal and ethical means. The call for more transparency extends beyond party lines, with both Democrats and Republicans expressing concern over the potential erosion of public trust.
While some politicians on the list have earned fortunes through successful business ventures prior to entering politics, others have seen significant increases in their net worth during their time in public service. Real estate investments, stock portfolios, and lucrative business deals are commonly cited explanations for the rapid accumulation of wealth among these politicians.
Candidate Mark Jones
support in the 2022 primary election, finishing fourth among eight candidates. Since then, he has immersed himself in county affairs, attending meetings and engaging with community organizations.
Reflecting on his candidacy, Jones emphasizes his readiness to lead Josephine County with integrity and transparency. Drawing on his experience in the fire service, he pledges to prioritize the community’s interests above all else. With a focus on collaboration and unity, he seeks to address critical issues such as economic development, housing, and homelessness.
Jones advocates for bridging political divides to foster a more inclusive and prosperous county. He envisions a future where residents come together to tackle shared challenges and build a brighter tomorrow. Through his website, ElectMarkJones.com, he invites voters to learn more about his platform and vision for Josephine County.
As the election date approaches on May 21, Jones urges voters to consider his candidacy and the principles he stands for. With a commitment to ethical leadership and genuine service, he aims to bring positive change to Josephine County and ensure a better future for all residents.
Additionally, critics argue that the current financial disclosure requirements may not be stringent enough to capture the full extent of a politician’s wealth. Calls for enhanced disclosure regulations and a more rigorous examination of financial transactions are gaining traction among those seeking to address this apparent disconnect.
In response to the growing public concern, there are calls for reforms to address the wealth disparities among politicians. Proposals include revising and expanding financial disclosure requirements, implementing stricter ethics oversight, and exploring the feasibility of placing limits on the financial activities of public officials while in office.
The controversy surrounding the net worths of these politicians serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining public trust in the political system. As investigations and discussions unfold, it remains to be seen whether meaningful reforms will be enacted to ensure greater transparency and accountability in the financial affairs of public servants.

City Council approves regulations for charitable activities in city parks
By: Holly MortonIn a recent decision, the Grants Pass City Council has implemented new regulations requiring individuals and groups intending to provide assistance to homeless individuals in city parks to register with the city and submit activity reports. The decision received final approval during the council’s session on Wednesday night, signifying a move towards increased oversight of charitable efforts within the community.
According to the approved ordinance, those wishing to offer food, clothing, and various supplies or services to the homeless population must now adhere to a registration process. This process involves the submission of a one-time $25 application fee and the obligation to renew registration every four months.
The introduction of these regulations has sparked discussions within the community, with some expressing concerns about the potential impact on charitable activities. Proponents of the ordinance argue that it serves as a mechanism to ensure organized and accountable assistance to homeless individuals,
promoting safety and coordination among service providers.
The $25 application fee is seen as a means to cover administrative costs associated with the registration process. The periodic renewal requirement aims to keep information current and facilitate ongoing communication between registered providers and city officials.
Critics argue that the regulations may pose challenges for smaller, grassroots organizations or individuals who engage in spontaneous acts of charity. Concerns have been raised about potential barriers that the registration process and associated fees may pose to the altruistic spirit of community members.
As the new regulations take effect, both proponents and critics will be closely monitoring their impact on homeless assistance initiatives in Grants Pass. The City Council’s decision reflects an attempt to strike a balance between facilitating charitable efforts and maintaining oversight for the well-being of the community as a whole.
Don’t forget to spring ahead tonight
By: Trina WhalerResidents across Oregon are gearing up for the annual spring ahead time change, set to take place tonight, March 10th. As daylight saving time commences, clocks will be set forward by one hour at 2 a.m., marking the beginning of longer days and shorter nights.
This adjustment serves as a reminder of the impending arrival of spring, bringing with it the promise of warmer weather and blooming landscapes. While the time change is generally seen as a positive sign of the changing seasons, it can also disrupt sleep patterns for some individuals, prompting a brief adjustment period.
Oregonians are advised to set their clocks forward before bed-
time tonight to avoid any confusion or lateness in the morning. Public safety officials also use this opportunity to remind residents to check and replace batteries in smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms.
The spring ahead time change is part of a nationwide tradition, with most states participating in the adjustment. It is designed to maximize daylight during the longer days of spring and summer, promoting energy efficiency and outdoor activities.
There is a shared sense of anticipation for the longer days and the renewal that comes with the arrival of spring. So, don’t forget to turn those clocks forward and embrace the extra daylight that the spring ahead time change brings to Oregonians tonight.
