The Josephine County Commissioners' meeting yesterday left many community members bewildered, angered, and questioning the integrity of the county’s leadership. Commissioners Chris Barnett and Ron Smith unanimously appointed Andreas Blech to fill the seat vacated by recently recalled Commissioner John West. This decision has sparked widespread outrage, particularly given Blech’s support of West throughout the recall process and his controversial closing statement that characterized the recall as a "mistake."
With this appointment, many in the community see the move as a blatant consolidation of political power—a calculated step to align county leadership more closely with the ideologies and practices that led to West’s recall in the first place.
Andreas Blech’s appointment raised immediate eyebrows. A regular defender of John West during the contentious recall campaign, Blech stood by West even as allegations of ethical misconduct, poor leadership, and a lack of accountability swirled around him. For critics, Blech’s appointment feels less like filling a vacant seat and more like planting a loyal ally of Barnett and Smith—a gesture that underscores the public's perception of an increasingly insulated and unaccountable commission.
At the heart of the controversy is the question: If the community resoundingly rejected West’s leadership, why appoint some-
one who not only supported him but went so far as to call the recall a mistake? For many, this decision appears to dismiss the will of the voters entirely.
“It’s as if they took the community’s frustration, balled it up, and threw it right back in our faces,” said one resident on social media.
The decision-making process itself left much to be desired. The meeting began with Commissioner Barnett adopting what some attendees described as an increasingly performative demeanor, sporting more decorative “flare” on his sport coat—a trend some say recalls his military background but comes across as a theatrical nod to authority rather than professionalism.
Barnett’s tone throughout the meeting was, according to observers, condescending toward the public, even as he seemed to guide Commissioner Smith through the motions. Smith, ostensibly the chair of the commission, appeared uncertain and unsteady, fumbling over his own prepared questions during the interview process.
“If he can’t even read the questions he wrote, how can we take this process seriously?” another resident chimed.
The interview itself was shockingly brief, with only a handful of questions posed to both Baertshciger and Blech before the commissioners retreated into deliberation. Just minutes later, Barnett and Smith emerged with their decision, unanimously selecting Blech. To many, the speed of the decision-making process betrayed an air of inevitability, as though the outcome had been predetermined.
Critics argue that Blech’s appointment is emblematic of deeper issues within the county commission—a body now perceived as riddled with conflicts of interest and political cronyism. Barnett and Smith’s decision to appoint Blech seems to cement a factional dynamic that many fear will exacerbate existing divisions within the community.
The public is particularly concerned about the potential for backroom dealings and lack of transparency in county deci-
sion-making. With Blech now seated, the commission appears to be doubling down on an insular leadership style that prioritizes loyalty over accountability, raising serious questions about how conflicts of interest will be managed—or ignored.
“Ethics complaints and charter violations are already mounting,” said a local advocate. “This isn’t just about bad optics; this is about whether our leaders are operating within the bounds of the law.”
For many community members, the appointment of Andreas Blech is a call to action. Organizers are already mobilizing to prepare for what they see as the inevitable fallout from this decision. Some are openly discussing the possibility of launching recalls against Barnett and Smith, noting that under Oregon law, such efforts can begin in six months.
“Recalling one commissioner costs the same as recalling three,” another pointed out, hinting at the community’s growing frustration and willingness to take on the fight.
The recall of John West served as a stark warning to county leadership about the consequences of ignoring the will of the people. Yet, Barnett and Smith’s decision to appoint Blech suggests they may not have absorbed the lessons of West’s downfall. By doubling down on a controversial figure, the commissioners risk alienating an already disillusioned public even further.
The implications of yesterday’s decision extend far beyond the appointment itself. For many residents, this moment represents a broader struggle over the direction of Josephine County. The recall of John West was, for many, a moment of hope—a signal that

Celebrating Martin Luther King Jr.
By: Kimberly Laveau
Every year, on the third Monday of January, Americans come together to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a national holiday dedicated to honoring the life and legacy of one of the most transformative figures in American history. Born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. remains a symbol of hope, courage, and unwavering commitment to justice. His impact continues to shape the nation’s conscience and inspire movements for equality across the globe. Dr. King rose to prominence as a leader in the Civil Rights Movement during the 1950s and 1960s, advocating against racial segregation and discrimination. His approach to change was firmly rooted in nonviolent resistance, a philosophy he adopted from the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi. With a focus on peace and equality, Dr. King mobilized millions of Americans to confront the injustices of the era.
At a time when the nation was deeply divided by race and systemic inequality, Dr. King became a unifying force. His leadership in events such as the
Montgomery Bus Boycott and his role in founding the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) demonstrated his ability to galvanize communities toward meaningful social change.
Perhaps the most iconic moment of Dr. King’s career came on August 28, 1963, during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Standing on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial before a crowd of over 250,000 people, Dr. King delivered his historic "I Have a Dream" speech.
In his address, he painted a vivid picture of a future where all people, regardless of race, would
be judged by their character rather than the color of their skin. His words struck a chord with the nation, becoming a rallying cry for the Civil Rights Movement and a beacon of hope for generations to come. The speech not only captured the aspirations of millions but also underscored the urgency of addressing racial inequality in America.
Dr. King’s advocacy extended beyond the fight for racial equality. He recognized the interconnectedness of social injustices and became a vocal opponent of poverty, economic inequality, and the Vietnam War. His vision encompassed a society where all people—regardless of race, gender, or socioeconomic status—could live in harmony and dignity.
Through initiatives like the Poor People’s Campaign, Dr. King sought to address systemic poverty and economic disparity, arguing that true equality could not be achieved without addressing these fundamental issues. His broad and inclusive approach to social justice remains relevant in today’s movements for gender equality, LGBTQ+ rights, and economic reform.
Dr. King’s life was tragically cut short on April 4, 1968, when he was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee. Yet, his influence endures. His teach-
ings and vision continue to inspire contemporary movements for justice, equality, and peace. From the Black Lives Matter movement to campaigns for income equality, his ideals serve as a moral compass for activists around the world.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is more than a time for reflection—it is a day of action. Across the nation, people honor Dr. King’s memory through community service projects, educational programs, and acts of kindness aimed at improving their communities. The holiday serves as a reminder that his dream of equality is not just a historical milestone but an ongoing call to action.
This year, as we celebrate Dr. King’s life and legacy, it is important to reflect on the progress made since his time. Landmark achievements

In today’s digital age, social media has become a powerful tool for public engagement, offering elected officials and even former officeholders a direct line to their constituents. However, the same platforms that promote transparency and accessibility also present significant risks to decorum, legality, and public trust. A recent online dispute between former Josephine County Commissioner Herman Baertschiger and resident Deb Berg exemplifies the potential pitfalls of social media interactions involving public figures.
The exchange began when Berg raised concerns about a zoning issue involving a property owned by Baertschiger. The property, operating as a commercial feed store, is zoned for Exclusive Farm (EF) use, prompting questions about its compliance with local regulations. In addition to her concerns, Berg filed an ethics complaint with the Oregon Government Ethics Commission (OGEC), citing a potential violation of ORS 244.120(2), which addresses conflicts of interest for public officials.
The dispute transitioned to Facebook, where Baertschiger defended himself by stating that a letter from his attorney, referenced in a public meeting, was protect-
ed under attorney-client privilege. Berg responded by raising questions about the accuracy of his claims and sharing a video link of the meeting to support her perspective. As the conversation unfolded, the tone became more contentious, with both parties expressing their frustrations, which shifted the focus from a policy discussion to a more public and personal exchange.
This incident highlights the challenges and dangers of using social media to address public concerns. While platforms like Facebook offer immediacy and accessibility, they can easily blur the lines between professional responsibility and personal reaction. Public officials, even those no longer in office, risk eroding public trust and undermining their credibility when engaging in contentious or emotionally charged online debates.
To avoid these pitfalls, public officials should prioritize face-to-face communication. Public meetings and community forums provide opportunities for structured, respectful dialogue that ensures transparency while reducing the risk of emotional responses or misunderstandings. Such settings foster accountability and encourage constructive discussions about community concerns.
Additionally, local governments should develop or reinforce social media policies for both current and former public officials acting in any public-facing capacity. These policies should emphasize professionalism, discourage personal disputes, and protect the legal and ethical standing of individuals and the jurisdictions they represent.
The public dispute between Berg and Baertschiger serves as a cautionary tale for navigating the intersection of politics and social media. While digital platforms can enhance engagement, they are no substitute for thoughtful and respectful public discourse. Disputes aired online often over-

such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 stand as testaments to the power of his movement. However, the struggle for justice is far from over.
Persistent disparities in wealth, education, and opportunity remind us of the work that remains. The challenges of addressing systemic racism, voter suppression, and social inequality underscore the continued relevance of Dr. King’s message. His dream of a just and equitable society remains an aspiration that demands col-
lective effort.
As we honor Dr. King’s legacy, let us recommit ourselves to the ideals he championed. His unwavering belief in nonviolence, equality, and the transformative power of love challenges each of us to play a role in building a better future. Whether through acts of service, advocacy, or simply treating others with kindness and respect, we can all contribute to making his dream a reality.
Dr. King once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for oth-
ers?’” Today, let us answer that question by working toward a society where every person is valued and every voice is heard.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is not just a celebration of a man—it is a celebration of a movement. It is a reminder that change is possible when people come together with determination and hope. Dr. King’s legacy lives on in the hearts of those who continue to fight for justice, proving that his dream was not just his own, but a dream for us all.

In the raucous, neon-lit carnival that is social media, the performers are loud, the stakes are high, and the freaks—oh, the freaks—are always hungry for blood. Among them is a particularly vile breed: the keyboard critic. You’ve seen them. They slink through comment sections like buzzards over a desert, waiting for someone brave enough to bare their soul. Vulnerability, to them, is not an act of courage but a flashing neon target.
It’s not enough for these armchair jackals to scroll past your story. No, they must dissect it, shred it, mock it for sport. Grammar becomes their bludgeon, your pain their punchline. Your effort to connect, to share something human, is reduced to fodder for their insecurities. These critics don’t just want to rain on your parade—they want to burn it down and dance in the ashes, all for a fleeting sense of superiority.
But here’s the thing they’ll never under-
stand: sharing your story takes guts. Real guts. In a world obsessed with perfection and curated personas, choosing to be authentic is revolutionary. Whether you’re talking about the battle scars of life, a hard-earned victory, or the weight of an unbearable loss, putting it out there is no small feat. It’s not just catharsis; it’s a lifeline, a beacon for others who might be struggling in the same storm.
And yet, here comes the critic, barreling in on their high horse of self-importance. They don’t care about your story or its significance. They’re here to take cheap shots from the safety of their screen, twisting your words and ridiculing your effort. Why? Because they’re too afraid to confront their own inadequacies. Picking on others is easier than fixing themselves.
To these people, I offer this reminder: karma is no joke. She’s out there, sharp and patient, waiting for her moment. That snide comment might feel like a win today, but life has
a way of flipping the script. One day, you’ll be the one putting yourself out there, hoping for kindness, and instead, you’ll get a taste of the same venom you once spewed. Maybe then, you’ll understand the weight of your actions.
To those courageous enough to keep sharing, I say this: don’t let the vultures win. Your story matters, even if it’s messy, imperfect, or unpolished. For every insecure critic tearing you down, there are countless others who see your bravery, who find solace and strength in your words. Speak for them. Speak for yourself. The world needs more truth-tellers and fewer cowards hiding behind avatars.
The internet is a cacophony of noise, but it’s also a place for connection. Your voice can cut through the static and reach someone who needs it. Don’t let the fear of criticism silence you. The world doesn’t belong to the bitter; it belongs to the brave.
Keep sharing. Keep being real. And remember, karma’s always watching.
shadow substantive issues and distract from the work of governance.
Ultimately, the conduct of public figures— whether in office or retired—should reflect their commitment to integrity, professionalism, and community service. By focusing on fostering in-person dialogue and avoiding the traps of "keyboard warrior" behavior, local officials can build trust, address public concerns effectively, and uphold the values of public service. This approach ensures that both individuals and their communities benefit from meaningful and respectful interactions, rather than becoming mired in public disputes.

the community could hold its leaders accountable. Now, that hope feels threatened.
“We’re at a crossroads,” said one community leader. “This isn’t just about Andreas Blech or Chris Barnett or Ron Smith. This is about whether the people of Josephine County have a voice in their own government or whether our leaders will continue to act as though they’re above accountability.”
As the dust settles, all eyes will remain on the county commission. The decisions they make in the coming months will likely determine whether they can rebuild public trust—or whether they’ll find themselves facing the same fate as John West.
The appointment of Andreas Blech has reignited tensions in Josephine County, exposing deep divisions between the leadership and the public they serve. Whether Barnett and Smith are able—or willing—to address these concerns remains to be seen.
For now, one thing is certain: the community’s eyes are fixed on the commissioners, and their actions will not go unnoticed. If they fail to heed the lessons of the past, they risk facing the same grassroots uprising that led to John West’s removal. Commissioner Barnett promised a fresh start, but his actions speak louder than his words—offering a stark reminder that trust is earned through deeds, not rhetoric.

As a music lover and a local in Southern Oregon, I’ve been fortunate to experience firsthand the magic of Jen Ambrose’s music. Hailing from this beautiful corner of the Pacific Northwest, Ambrose is more than just a musician—she’s a storyteller who weaves the spirit of the region into every note and lyric. Her soulful sound and heartfelt performances have made her a cornerstone of the Southern Oregon music scene, and her reach is only growing.
Jen’s musical journey began right here, amidst the natural beauty and tight-knit communities of Southern Oregon. Like many of us, she was shaped by her surroundings, drawing inspiration from the rolling hills, rivers, and forests that define our region. Her early years were spent exploring a wide range of musical genres— folk, rock, country, and jazz—which now blend seamlessly into her distinctive style.
I’ve always been struck by the maturity of her voice and the depth of her songwriting. From her earliest performances, it was clear she had something special—a sound that resonated deeply, not just because of its technical brilliance but because it carried real emotion.
What sets Jen apart is her ability to connect with listeners on a personal level. Her music is a beautiful fusion of folk and Americana, with rich storytelling at its core. Her voice, both powerful and tender, pulls you into her world, where themes of love, loss, and growth unfold like a conversation with an old friend.
Listening to her, I’m often reminded of artists like Bonnie Raitt and Gillian Welch, but Jen’s sound is uniquely her own. She has an incredible ability to capture the essence of Southern Oregon—the rugged landscapes, the quiet moments, and the shared experiences that define life here. Her songs feel like they belong to this place while still speaking to universal truths that resonate far beyond our region.
Jen’s performances are where her music truly shines. Whether she’s playing an intimate set in a local coffeehouse or taking the stage at a regional festival, she brings authenticity and warmth to every show. I’ve seen her captivate audiences with nothing more than her guitar, her voice, and her stories, creating an atmosphere that feels both personal and communal.
Her influence extends beyond her own music. Jen frequently collaborates with other local artists, enriching the Southern
Oregon music community and fostering connections that benefit everyone involved. It’s clear she’s as dedicated to supporting the local scene as she is to her craft.
While Jen’s heart remains in Southern Oregon, her music is finding a broader audience. Her recordings, which showcase her soulful blend of folk and blues, have started gaining traction on streaming platforms and playlists. Hearing her songs on regional radio or podcasts feels like a proud moment for all of us who’ve followed her journey.
She’s also making waves in the indie music world, performing at festivals and events that are introducing her to new fans across the country. It’s exciting to see her talent recognized on a larger stage while still staying true to her roots.
As Jen looks to the future, there’s no doubt she’ll continue to evolve as an artist. In Southern Oregon, the local chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) is quietly transforming lives with the simple yet profound mission of ensuring that no child sleeps on the floor. This volunteer-driven nonprofit is bringing comfort, stability, and hope to families across the region, one bed at a time.
Founded in 2012 in Kimberly, Idaho, Sleep in Heavenly Peace began with a heartfelt goal: to provide children with a safe and comfortable place to sleep. Over the years, this mission has spread nationally, with chapters opening across the country. The Southern Oregon chapter has embraced this vision wholeheartedly, focusing on helping local families struggling to provide basic necessities for their children.
For many children, having a bed of their own is more than just about comfort—it’s about security, dignity, and a sense of normalcy. SHP ensures that every bed comes complete with a mattress, pillows, and cozy bedding, creating a space that feels truly special for each recipient.
Like many communities across the United States, Southern Oregon faces challenges related to poverty and housing instability. Families often have to make tough choices, prioritizing essentials like food and rent, leaving little room for extras such as beds. As a result, some children sleep on couches, floors, or share beds with multiple siblings.
The Southern Oregon chapter of SHP is stepping up to address this need. By focusing on children from birth to age 18, the organization is providing a critical foundation for well-being: a good night’s sleep.
The process begins with families applying through SHP’s website, sharing their situations and needs. After reviewing the applications, volunteers get to work building the beds. Each bed is crafted using high-quality materials to ensure safety and durability. Once assembled, the beds are personally delivered and set up by volunteers, who also provide mattresses, pillows, and blankets to complete the package.
At the heart of SHP Southern Oregon’s success is the incredible support from the local community. Volunteers play an essential role in every step of the process, from building and assembling beds to delivering them and offering a warm smile to families in need.
Local businesses, schools, churches, and civic organizations have also rallied behind SHP, donating materials and hosting fundraising events. One of the most inspiring aspects of SHP’s work is its “Build Days,” where community members come together to construct beds for children. These gatherings foster a sense of camaraderie and collective purpose, allowing everyone involved to make a tangible difference in the lives of local families.
As the demand for beds continues to grow, SHP Southern Oregon remains committed to expanding its reach. The organization is working to raise awareness about childhood poverty and the importance of basic necessities, ensuring that more children in the region have a comfortable place to sleep.
For those looking to help, there are many ways to get involved, from donating funds or materials to volunteering time or hosting a bed-building event. Together, the community can ensure that every child in Southern Oregon sleeps in comfort and peace.
Sleep in Heavenly Peace is more than a nonprofit; it’s a testament to the power of compassion and community. With every bed delivered, SHP offers not just a physical resource, but a message of hope and care—proof that when neighbors come together, they can build brighter futures, one bed at a time.
