The Josephine County Commissioners' meeting yesterday left many community members bewildered, angered, and questioning the integrity of the county’s leadership. Commissioners Chris Barnett and Ron Smith unanimously appointed Andreas Blech to fill the seat vacated by recently recalled Commissioner John West. This decision has sparked widespread outrage, particularly given Blech’s support of West throughout the recall process and his controversial closing statement that characterized the recall as a "mistake."
With this appointment, many in the community see the move as a blatant consolidation of political power—a calculated step to align county leadership more closely with the ideologies and practices that led to West’s recall in the first place.
Andreas Blech’s appointment raised immediate eyebrows. A regular defender of John West during the contentious recall campaign, Blech stood by West even as allegations of ethical misconduct, poor leadership, and a lack of accountability swirled around him. Every year, on the third Monday of January, Americans come together to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a national holiday dedicated to honoring the life and legacy of one of the most transformative figures in American history. Born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. remains a symbol of hope, courage, and unwavering commitment to justice. His impact continues to shape the nation’s conscience and inspire movements for equality across the globe. Dr. King rose to prominence as a leader in the Civil Rights Movement during the 1950s and 1960s, advocating against racial segregation and discrimination. His approach to change was firmly rooted in nonviolent resistance, a philosophy he adopted from the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi. With a focus on peace and equality, Dr. King mobilized millions of Americans to confront the injustices of the era.
At a time when the nation was deeply divided by race and systemic inequality, Dr. King became a unifying force. His leadership in events such as the
Montgomery Bus Boycott and his role in founding the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) demonstrated his ability to galvanize communities toward meaningful social change.
Perhaps the most iconic moment of Dr. King’s career came on August 28, 1963, during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Standing on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial before a crowd of over 250,000 people, Dr. King delivered his historic "I Have a Dream" speech.
In his address, he painted a vivid picture of a future where all people, regardless of race, would
be judged by their character rather than the color of their skin. His words struck a chord with the nation, becoming a rallying cry for the Civil Rights Movement and a beacon of hope for generations to come. The speech not only captured the aspirations of millions but also underscored the urgency of addressing racial inequality in America.

However, the same platforms that promote transparency and accessibility also present significant risks to decorum, legality, and public trust. A recent online dispute between former Josephine County Commissioner Herman Baertschiger and resident Deb Berg exemplifies the potential pitfalls of social media interactions involving public figures.
The exchange began when Berg raised concerns about a zoning issue involving a property owned by Baertschiger. The property, operating as a commercial feed store, is zoned for Exclusive Farm (EF) use, prompting questions about its compliance with local regulations. In addition to her concerns, Berg filed an ethics complaint with the Oregon Government Ethics Commission (OGEC), citing a potential violation of ORS 244.120(2), which addresses conflicts of interest for public officials.
The dispute transitioned to Facebook, where Baertschiger defended himself by stating that a letter from his attorney, referenced in a public meeting, was protect-
ed under attorney-client privilege. Berg responded by raising questions about the accuracy of his claims and sharing a video link of the meeting to support her perspective. As the conversation unfolded, the tone became more contentious, with both parties expressing their frustrations, which shifted the focus from a policy discussion to a more public and personal exchange.

Vulnerability, to them, is not an act of courage but a flashing neon target.
It’s not enough for these armchair jackals to scroll past your story. No, they must dissect it, shred it, mock it for sport. Grammar becomes their bludgeon, your pain their punchline. Your effort to connect, to share something human, is reduced to fodder for their insecurities. These critics don’t just want to rain on your parade—they want to burn it down and dance in the ashes, all for a fleeting sense of superiority.
But here’s the thing they’ll never under-
stand: sharing your story takes guts. Real guts. In a world obsessed with perfection and curated personas, choosing to be authentic is revolutionary. Whether you’re talking about the battle scars of life, a hard-earned victory, or the weight of an unbearable loss, putting it out there is no small feat. In Southern Oregon, the local chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) is quietly transforming lives with the simple yet profound mission of ensuring that no child sleeps on the floor. This volunteer-driven nonprofit is bringing comfort, stability, and hope to families across the region, one bed at a time.
Founded in 2012 in Kimberly, Idaho, Sleep in Heavenly Peace began with a heartfelt goal: to provide children with a safe and comfortable place to sleep. Over the years, this mission has spread nationally, with chapters opening across the country. The Southern Oregon chapter has embraced this vision wholeheartedly, focusing on helping local families struggling to provide basic necessities for their children.
For many children, having a bed of their own is more than just about comfort—it’s about security, dignity, and a sense of normalcy. SHP ensures that every bed comes complete with a mattress, pillows, and cozy bedding, creating a space that feels truly special for each recipient.
Like many communities across the United States, Southern Oregon faces challenges related to poverty and housing instability. Families often have to make tough choices, prioritizing essentials like food and rent, leaving little room for extras such as beds.
