GRANTS PASS, OREGON — In a troubling trend impacting residents across the community, the cost of essential goods and services has risen sharply. Gas prices have surged once again, climbing another 23 cents per gallon this week alone. This spike comes on top of already elevated prices, creating additional financial pressure for those relying on their vehicles for daily commutes and errands.
At the same time, grocery prices have seen a staggering increase of at least 40% compared to this time last year. The compounded effect of these rising costs is making it increasingly difficult for families and individuals to maintain a sustainable and profitable lifestyle in Grants Pass.
The latest surge in gas prices is part of a broader trend affecting fuel costs nationwide. However, the impact is particularly pronounced in Grants Pass, where many residents depend on their vehicles for transportation due to limited public transit options. The increase to an average of $4.50 per gallon is forcing drivers to rethink their routines and budgets.
Local resident Mark Stevens expressed his frustration: "Every week it feels like I'm paying more at the pump. It's getting to the point where I have to choose between driving to work and other essential expenses."
Grocery shopping in Grants Pass has become a financial
strain for many. The 40% increase in prices over the past year is driven by a combination of factors including supply chain disruptions, labor shortages, and rising production costs. Staples such as milk, bread, and fresh produce have seen particularly steep price hikes, leaving families struggling to make ends meet.
Samantha Wright, a mother of three, shared her concerns: "I used to spend around $150 a week on groceries for my family. Now, it's closer to $210, and I'm not even buying as much. It's overwhelming."
The soaring costs of gas and groceries are having a ripple effect throughout the local economy. Businesses are facing higher operational expenses, which often get passed on to consumers. This cycle of increasing costs is making it challenging for residents to save or invest in their future.
Local business owner “Jenna” commented on the situation: "We're seeing fewer customers because people just don't have the extra money to spend. It's a tough time for everyone."
As residents of Grants Pass navigate these challenging times, the hope is that economic conditions will stabilize, and relief measures will provide some respite. In the meantime, community solidarity and support networks are proving crucial in helping individuals and families cope with the financial burden.
For now, the residents of Grants Pass continue to adapt and persevere, hoping for a brighter, more affordable future.
The apparent retribution by Commissioners West and Baertschiger continues, as evidenced by today’s decision by the Josephine County Board of Commissioners to defund the OSU Extension Service and its associated 4-H programs. The commissioners have voted to slash approximately $400,000 in tax funding, citing issues with the perceived “woke” agenda of the 4-H program.
In response to this decision, county leaders and OSU Extension officials are scrambling to find alternative ways to sustain these essential programs. Without a solution, these programs could face shutdown as soon as Monday, which could lead to dire implications for the Grants Pass community.
The defunding decision appears to be driven by political
motives rather than the best interests of the community. The commissioners’ move, framed as opposition to a “woke” agenda, undermines crucial local services that have long supported the region’s agricultural, educational, and emergency preparedness needs. This act of retribution puts the entire community at risk, jeopardizing programs that provide essential services and support to countless residents.
As the community waits for the outcome of ongoing negotiations, the focus remains on finding a viable solution to ensure the continuation of these programs. The hope is that reason will prevail, and the necessary funding will be restored to allow the OSU Extension Service and its 4-H programs to continue their invaluable work in Grants Pass.

As global economies face unprecedented challenges, experts are raising alarms about the potential for hyperinflation—a scenario where the inflation rate accelerates rapidly, eroding the purchasing power of money at an extraordinary pace. Hyperinflation, though rare, has historically wreaked havoc on economies, leading to severe economic instability, social unrest, and financial crises. As individuals and families seek ways to safeguard their financial well-being, understanding hyperinflation and preparing for its potential impacts becomes paramount.
Hyperinflation occurs when the inflation rate exceeds 50% per month. Unlike regular inflation, which is often gradual and manageable, hyperinflation spirals out of control, causing prices to skyrocket within a short period. Historical examples, such as Zimbabwe in the late 2000s and Germany during the Weimar Republic in the 1920s, illustrate the devastating effects of hyperinflation. In these cases, currencies became virtually worthless, leading to economic collapse and widespread hardship.
Several factors can trigger hyperinflation, including excessive money printing, loss of confidence in a currency, significant political instability, and supply chain disruptions. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated some of these factors, leading to increased government spending, supply chain interruptions, and economic uncertainty. While hyperinflation remains a worst-case scenario, the risk cannot be entirely dismissed.
One of the most effective strategies to combat hyperinflation is diversification. Holding a mix of assets can mitigate risk and preserve wealth. Consider investing in commodities like gold and silver, which tend to retain value during periods of high inflation. Real estate can also be a solid investment, as property values and rental income often rise with inflation. Governments offer inflation-protected

The question of who is truly running the United States has become a focal point of public discourse, particularly after last week's debate. Concerns about President Joe Biden's cognitive abilities have intensified, leading to speculation that other influential figures might be steering the country's direction. This article aims to explore these concerns and examine the roles of key figures such as First Lady Jill Biden and former President Barack Obama.
President Biden, now 81 years old, has faced ongoing scrutiny regarding his mental acuity. Critics argue that his frequent verbal missteps and moments of apparent confusion during public appearances raise doubts about his ability to lead effectively. During the recent debate, these concerns were amplified, as Biden appeared to struggle with articulating his policies and responding to opponents.
However, it's essential to note that Biden has undergone regular medical evaluations, and his doctors have consistently reported that he is fit to serve. Despite this, the narrative of a president in cognitive decline persists, fueled by political opponents and amplified by media coverage.
First Lady Jill Biden is undoubtedly a significant figure in the Biden administration. As an educator with a doctorate in education, she has been a vocal advocate for education reform, military families, and cancer research. Her role ex-
tends beyond traditional First Lady duties, often participating in policy discussions and public engagements.
Critics argue that Jill Biden may have a more substantial influence on the presidency than publicly acknowledged. Some believe she acts as a gatekeeper and confidante, helping to manage the president's schedule and decisions. However, there is no concrete evidence to suggest that she is running the country behind the scenes. Her influence is consistent with the supportive role many First Ladies have played throughout history.
Former President Barack Obama remains a prominent figure in American politics. Since leaving office, he has stayed active through public speaking, writing, and supporting Democratic candidates. His close relationship with Joe Biden, who served as his vice president, has led to speculation that Obama continues to wield significant influence over the current administration.
While Obama has publicly stated that he has no direct role in governing, some analysts believe his legacy and policy preferences still shape the Biden administration's approach. This influence is seen in areas such as climate change, healthcare, and foreign policy, where Biden's stances often align with Obama's.
In any presidency, the role of advisors and cabinet members is crucial. President Biden has assembled a team of
experienced professionals, including Vice President Kamala Harris, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan. These individuals play a vital role in shaping policy and advising the president.
The collaborative nature of modern governance means that decision-making is often a collective process. While the president is the ultimate decision-maker, the input and expertise of advisors and cabinet members are indispensable. This dynamic is not unique to the Biden administration but a standard feature of presidential governance.
The question of who is really running the United States under President Biden's leadership is complex and multifaceted. While concerns about Biden's cognitive health persist, there is no definitive evidence to suggest that he is not in control of his presidency. First Lady Jill Biden and former President Barack Obama are influential figures, but their roles do not extend to running the country.
Ultimately, the administration's functioning reflects a collaborative effort among the president, his advisors, and his cabinet. The American people deserve transparency and accountability, and ongoing scrutiny of the president's performance is a fundamental aspect of democratic governance.
As the 2024 election approaches, these questions will undoubtedly continue to be a significant part of the political conversation.

Three Republican-controlled House committees have launched an investigation into allegations that the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) collaborated with the Biden presidential campaign to mislead American voters in the weeks leading up to the 2020 election. The controversy centers on a laptop belonging to Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden. In October 2020, the New York Post published a report based on documents and emails purportedly found on Hunter Biden's abandoned laptop. According to the Post, the laptop's hard drive was provided to Rudy Giuliani, then serving as President Trump's personal attorney. The emails allegedly linked Joe Biden to Hunter Biden's business dealings with Burisma, a Ukrainian gas company, during Joe Biden's tenure as vice
president in 2014. The newspaper's report suggested these emails were evidence of an international influence-peddling scheme involving the Bidens.
The investigation by the House committees aims to determine the extent of the CIA's involvement, if any, and whether there was an attempt to sway public opinion during a critical period of the presidential campaign. The committees are also examining the role of the Biden campaign in this alleged effort to mislead voters.
These inquiries come amid ongoing political tensions and debates over the integrity of the 2020 election and the actions of various government agencies. As the investigation progresses, it is expected to draw significant attention from both political parties and the public.

securities, such as Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) in the United States. These bonds adjust their principal value based on inflation, providing a hedge against rising prices. By including these in your investment portfolio, you can protect your purchasing power.
Hyperinflation typically affects a single currency. Holding a diversified basket of foreign currencies can provide a buffer. Currencies from stable economies, such as the Swiss franc or the Japanese yen, are often considered safe havens during periods of economic turmoil.
Having a robust emergency fund is crucial in uncertain times. Aim to save at least six to twelve months' worth of living expenses in a liquid, easily accessible account. While cash can lose value quickly during hyperinflation, an emergency fund provides a safety net for immediate needs and unexpected expenses.
Tangible assets, such as land, precious metals, and collectibles, can serve as stores of value. Unlike paper currency, these assets have intrinsic value and can be more resilient to inflationary pressures. Investing in tangible assets can diversify your portfolio and provide a hedge against hyperinflation.
Debt can become increasingly burdensome during hyperinflation. As interest rates rise and the real value of debt repayments increases, managing debt becomes more challenging. Focus on paying off high-interest debt and avoid taking on new debt. This strategy can improve your financial stability and re-
duce vulnerability to rising costs.
In times of economic uncertainty, enhancing your skills and increasing your earnings potential can provide additional financial security. Investing in education, training, or side businesses can create new income streams and improve your ability to adapt to changing economic conditions.
Hyperinflation can lead to shortages of essential goods. Consider stocking up on non-perishable items, such as food, medicine, and household supplies. Having a reserve of essential goods can reduce the impact of price spikes and supply chain disruptions.
Staying informed about economic trends and government policies is critical. Monitor financial news, follow expert analysis, and stay connected with financial advisors. Being proactive and well-informed allows you to make timely decisions and adjust your strategy as needed.
While the prospect of hyperinflation is daunting, preparation is key to navigating potential economic turbulence. By diversifying investments, holding foreign currencies, building an emergency fund, investing in tangible assets, reducing debt, increasing earnings potential, stocking up on essentials, and staying informed, individuals can mitigate the risks associated with hyperinflation. Financial preparedness not only protects your wealth but also provides peace of mind in uncertain times.

As Grants Pass braces for a week of temperatures exceeding 105 degrees, residents are urged to take precautions to stay cool and safe. With the extreme heat posing serious health risks, it’s crucial to be prepared and informed. Here are some practical tips and resources to help you beat the heat.
The most important step in coping with high temperatures is to stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Avoid beverages that can dehydrate you, such as alcohol and caffeine. Carry a water bottle with you and refill it frequently.
Seek Air-Conditioned Environments
Spending time in air-conditioned spaces can significantly reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses. If you don’t have air conditioning at home, consider visiting public places like shopping malls, libraries, or community centers. The City of Grants Pass will also be opening cooling centers throughout the week. Check the city’s website or local news for locations and hours of operation.
Limit Outdoor Activities
Try to stay indoors during the hottest parts of the day, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you
must be outside, take frequent breaks in the shade and avoid strenuous activities. Wear light, loose-fitting clothing, and a wide-brimmed hat to protect yourself from the sun.
While fans can provide relief, they are not sufficient when temperatures exceed 95 degrees. Use fans to circulate air in conjunction with air conditioning. At night, position fans near windows to draw in cooler air from outside.
Use shades, blinds, or curtains to block out the sun during the day. Open windows and use fans to ventilate your home during the cooler evening and morning hours. Avoid using appliances that generate heat, such as ovens and stoves, during the hottest parts of the day.
Watch for Heat-Related Illnesses
Be aware of the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Symptoms include heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, and headaches. If you or someone you know exhibits these symptoms, move to a cooler place, drink water, and seek medical attention if necessary.
With these tips, Grants Pass residents can better navigate the extreme heat and stay safe during the upcoming heatwave. Stay informed about weather updates and take proactive measures to protect yourself and your loved ones.
ASSISTED LIVING AND CAREGIVING HAVE EVOLVED, but not always for the better. Many companies are profiting significantly while the quality of care often stagnates or declines. This is a growing concern as the demand for long-term care among older adults strains our economy, with working adults sacrificing time and money to care for loved ones.
In 2021, the average hourly rate for a caregiver was $25. Today, it has soared to over $45, with agencies struggling to retain employees. Caregivers, the heart of these services, often receive a small fraction of what clients pay, exacerbating the problem.
This situation also impacts the mental health of middle-aged adults who juggle the needs of their children, aging parents, and careers. It’s a challenging balance, but there is help available.
