Construction Sport is a charity founded by experienced construction operatives, dedicated to improving the lives of our workers.

Within construction our physical health and safety on site has been prioritised; health and safety protocols have been a success, but that’s just half the battle.

Hours upon hours are invested in on-site and off-site training. We have regular updates regarding safety briefings, safety alerts, near misses, lessons learnt, working at height, people plant interface and an endless plethora of information and rules to ensure everyone remains safe.

Yet little, if anything is communicated about our mental health.

So we decided to use sport as the conduit for change. Most people enjoy watching or taking part in sport and appreciate the health benefits it provides; it makes sense.

Our HUNDRED CLUB membership scheme will enable you and your colleagues to participate in a number of sports events, held at popular venues around the UK. You can even watch your performance on our own Youtube channel.

We can support & organise fundraising events, and provide sponsorship and networking possibilities; along with many other benefits.

Membership includes access to unique & dedicated services which we have created specifically for the construction industry.

Through membership, we have created a unique way of dealing with the issue of mental health; which we believe will make a difference to the lives of our operatives and their families.

Despite all the talk and awareness programmes, nothing is improving.

Everyone says they are addressing the problem because they know they should. So they do just enough to say they are taking it seriously; but they’re not.

Our research was damning

In one week, we spoke face to face with 3,000 Construction Operatives ranging from site based operatives to Project Directors. We asked them if they had received some form of mental health training.

Less than 50 said they had received mental health first aid training - and all of those were in middle management and higher positions.

None of the blue-collar staff had been offered or received any form of mental health-based education. Not a single one of the 3,000 operatives we asked. The message is clearly not getting to the workforce on the ground; where it matters most and it is not good enough.

If we were all educated with regards to understanding mental health, there would be no need to speak about there being a stigma; because there wouldn’t be one.

An office-based representative sitting the mental health first aid course followed by a 5-minute toolbox talk about depression is not the solution.

As a construction worker, the people that know when we are not 100% are the operatives we work alongside; so we should all be trained to understand mental health. If all of us on the ground are trained, we can support each other correctly.

That’s why we created Construction Sport, to develop programs aimed at educating the operative.

The Future workforce

It is very well documented that there is a significant labour shortage within our industry. Construction Sport has identified two key areas in which we believe it is possible to significantly Improve the labour shortage.

The first problem is that the process of booking and completing the correct CSCS scheme course is too complicated & difficult to understand for new people coming into the sector.

Due to the complicated process many college students are choosing jobs with simple pathways outside of construction.

Construction Sport are actively discussing with training providers & the CITB ways in which this process of the CSCS scheme can be simplified, not necessarily the test itself but the access to do the CSCS test and many more specific training courses.

The second problem identified is the students are not being given job opportunities.

Studying for 3 days a week means many of them are spending their spare days unemployed. These additional days are vitally important, and we believe they could be a fantastic opportunity for them to get their foot in the door.

These 2 days do not have to be specific to their college course. Students we speak to will consider anything within construction, should it mean earning a living.

Even after many individuals complete their Construction based courses, they are taking on apprenticeships/careers that have made job opportunities simple, such as Network Rail and Transport for London.

We are now working with colleges to assist with the process of getting CSCS cards and also to connect students/job seekers to employers.

I am proud to say the companies within the Construction Sport network have now welcomed the opportunity to discuss with students/job seekers the opportunity to work with their businesses.

Being there at this early stage of a construction workers career is key, ensuring, not just for careers advice and support, but also to ensure that they are aware of the services that are available for them with regards to their mental and physical health.

With our network growing very quickly your mmbership will enable us to form many more partnerships that will help our industry to succeed all over the UK.

To support the education of construction workers regarding mental health issues, we produce our own Heads Up video content.

This content highlights specific topics surrounding mental health in construction:-

1. How it can affect us

2. The symptoms

3. The causes

4. The signs

5. How to go about getting help

The heads up talk is delivered monthly via an online link, which is then sent directly by email, text message or whatsapp.

The Construction Sport Heads up sessions are viewed by each employee within your business, with no session exceeding ten minutes.

These sessions have been created as an educational tool to provide the construction worker with a clear understanding of a specific subject, they may face.

How it works

The individual clicks the link we have sent to them.

A brief introduction will play after which they will be asked to enter details such as their name, the business they work for and their email address.

Once completed

The information gathered from these sessions, enables us to produce a PDF document containing the names of all employees that have acknowledged the Heads Up Session. This document can be used as evidence towards your own mental health policy.

Construction Sport Lottery

As a thank you to each person who acknowledges the Heads Up Session, we will enter them into our monthly Construction Sport Lottery, where there is a chance of winning a fantastic prize.
