Turner & Townsend helps Sasol create a world-class head office

Eranove to build 65MW electricity plant in Togo The Director-General of the pan-African industrial group Eranove, Marc Albérola has signed a power generation concession agreement with Togolese Minister of Mines and Energy, Marc Dèdèriwè AblyBidamon, for the commissioning of Kékéli Efficient Power plant, which will be located in the Lomé port area in Togo.

The project follows a competitive dialogue launched in January 2018. It includes the participation of Siemens, which wishes to be actively involved in the electrification efforts of the Togolese Republic, and will provide the turbines, technology and maintenance services for the power plant.

Construction will be carried out by the Spanish group Grupo TSK (EPC). As for the financing it will be mobilized in CFA francs, the West African Development Bank (BOAD) and the pan-African banking group Oragroup will be the lead partners. The Eranove group will develop, operate and maintain this plant, which will eventually be operated and managed by Togolese people.

With an installed capacity of 65MW, the Kékéli Efficient Power gas plant will use combined cycle technology. The technology, makes it possible to produce more electricity without extra gas consumption while limiting CO2 emissions into the atmosphere, thereby contributing to electricity production that respects the sector’s economic and financial balance and the environment.

Sino–Africa cooperation a game changer Achieving Africa’s development is no easy task, and its transformation comes with sacrifices being made to ensure that China’s investments see the light of day; Sino-Africa support is based on mutual respect and collaboration.

he People’s Republic of China and Africa relations in the last few decades have become one of the most progressive and dynamic on the political, social and economic partnerships in the world.

In Africa projects worth billions of dollars have been planned for implementation ranging from road infrastructure, airports, energy, water and sanitation, aviation, manufacturing, mining and indeed, generous assistance to multilateral donations of infrastructure such as the construction of a multi-million African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

There is no doubt that Sino-Africa relations are based on mutual benefits. These fundamental developments, for instance, are coming on the back of China having committed and availed US $60bn at the end of 2015 directed towards the industrialization and modernization of the continent. The value of trade between the People’s Republic of China and Africa had increased phenomenally totaling US $200bn in 2014. Apart from the US $60bn availed under the Forum for China-Africa Cooperation Summit in South Africa in December 2015, billions of dollars had already been poured into infrastructure development in different African countries.

China Brief clearly points out building the East-West Africa highway is key in which infrastructure networks could help facilitate and spring the emergence of an eventual, true East-West link in the long term.

In the short-to-mid-term, the investments being made in road infrastructure will truly and robustly set East-West transport links as a formidable force that is going to be a panacea in improving trade and commerce in Africa.

It is envisioned that the proposed East-West link in the form of the Trans-Africa Highway 5 will manifest into credible network systems for trade for a full continental connection for a strong transcontinental African transport backbone corridor that is likely to change trade relations within Africa.

Achieving Africa’s development The nine-highway network is said to have been originally put forth by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa in 1971 and currently undertaken by the agency in conjunction with the African Union, the African Development Bank and external stakeholders. The highway connects Dakar, in Senegal, to the Chadian capital of N’djamena, about 4,500 kilometers. It runs through seven countries, Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Nigeria, Cameroon, and Chad.

In Southern Africa, individual countries are accessing funding to build airports in the case of Zimbabwe, the completed Victoria Falls International Airport to the tune of US $150m loan from China, is a good example. China is also supporting revamping and expansion of Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport, and in Zambia, the Kenneth Kaunda International Airport is nearing completion. More support has been invested in energy projects, and this will mark a huge transformation in development among African countries.

Achieving Africa’s development is no easy task, and its transformation comes with sacrifices being made to ensure that China’s investments see the light of day. It is appreciated that Sino-Africa support is based on mutual respect and collaboration, contrary to the view that Africa is facing another threat of Sino colonization. That is conspiratory. Going into the future, African economies stand to benefit by way of improvement in terms of economic competitiveness and enhanced trade volumes within Africa and beyond.

According to a study by the World Bank, Africa has a regional average of two industrial robots per 100,000 manufacturing workers.

This will not only bolster efficiency but also improve time management for most construction job sites.

Variable environments Robots perform exceptionally well at repetitive tasks in a controlled environment such as a factory. By incorporating robots in large-scale manufacture of pre-fabricated elements, there will be an upstream in the industry whereby the manufacturing task will be performed in a controlled environment, and not on site.

However, construction sites are far from being a controlled environment. For robots to be profitable and productive, they need to be able to adapt to real-time variations in their environment with little or no programming.

Being able to adapt and change with the environment is very difficult for robots to accomplish; however, a few robots are taking on these historically challenging tasks.

Before using robots for construction, the building site needs to be characterized, and this includes the working environment as well as the type of tasks that need to be done.

Construction sites have a wide range of geographical dispersion, especially for large projects. Unlike in a factory setup, the final products are not repetitive as each project has its unique features, with different activities being done with little repetition.

On construction sites, various tasks are taking place at the same time, and these tasks are interlinked in regards to the resources allocated to each of them. Building sites are very dynamic, with systematic changes in tasks and the surrounding environment; they are also hostile and are surrounded by obstacles, uneven surfaces, equipment among others. Their unstructured nature makes them not set to accommodate the movement of robots.

In addition to that, the tasks performed at construction sites are complex in the cognitive sense, and the use of sensory capability, as well as knowledge based on

experience,are highly required. Nevertheless, even tasks with repetitive operations would still require the robot to systematically change its position by shifting orientation when it begins a new cycle.

In order for robots to perform adequately in construction sites, they will need to be portable, have the ability to move around, have the ability to ‘sense’ its environment, and be able to process data or information received.

Vision Most robots use artificial vision which is able to recognize the range of the environment in which it is operating at. Robots should also be prepared for hostile environments.

As mentioned earlier, construction sites are hostile and thus robots should be able to work outdoors while moving around in difficult conditions, unprotected and should also be ready for the unexpected such as falling materials, falling from heights and the elements.

Adopting technology such as robots in the construction industry has been met with some hesitations from industry professionals.

However, experts agree that while digitization of the field as an emerging trend has the potential to remove some low-level positions, it will be several years before robotics is seen as a norm in the construction industry.

Job redundancies Those in the construction industry who are fearful that tech-infused solutions will take away their jobs should rest easy and be assured that automated machines will not replace human skill. This is because several tasks in the sector cannot be completed accurately and efficiently by a robot as compared to a human worker. For example, project management cannot be replaced by technology.

The benefits of using robotics in the building industry are evolving on a daily basis and are continuously being embraced on a wider scale, yet construction workers have not been put out of work. The venue wanted to transform its large conferencing area into a high-end environment that would provide guests and delegates with a visually impressive, clean and contemporary space in which to talk, work and present.

However, the chosen materials would have to maintain its aesthetics when faced with the site’s busy day-to-day conditions. To achieve this, a decorative system was required that would be able to withstand heavy foot traffic,
