That means going beyond simply supporting your equipment needs — we also look for ways to help you optimize your entire operation. A great place to begin is with Komatsu’s suite of digital solutions, which are quickly becoming essential tools for jobsite efficiency and long-term profitability. In this issue, Komatsu’s Chief Digital Officer, Mike Gidaspow, shares his expertise in an informative Q&A you won’t want to miss.

I also encourage you to explore our rental solutions. Whether you need a specific machine for a short-term project or flexible fleet options, renting is a cost-effective way to meet your needs. Our experienced territory managers are ready to help you determine the most optimal equipment for your operations.

We’re proud to highlight several new equipment offerings as well. Our wheel loaders built for productivity, operator comfort and ease of maintenance — have been expanded with the introduction of the WA475-11 and WA485-11. Both models deliver increased engine power with lower fuel consumption compared to their predecessors. Yard loader configurations are also available for higher productivity in aggregate applications.

Alliance Environmental Systems Inc. leans on trusted equipment, experienced crews and full-scope capabilities to manage complex demolition projects

Company: Alliance Environmental Systems Inc.

Location: West Chester, Pennsylvania

Employees: 50

Established: 1994

Area of expertise: Environmental remediation and full-service demolition

Komatsu equipment: PC240LC-11, PC360LC-11, PC390LC-11 and PC490LC-11 excavators; WA200 wheel loader

Alliance Environmental Systems Inc. has built its reputation in the demolition industry on experience, efficiency and reliability. Based in West Chester, Pa., the company specializes in environmental remediation and demolition. Since 1994, Alliance Environmental Systems has provided comprehensive services that range from mold and asbestos removal to full-scale demolition projects.

“We take on projects of all sizes,” said Project Manager Rodney Goodwin. “Some days, we have a single operator cutting a small piece of concrete. Other times, we have 15 or 20 excavators working on a million-square-foot demolition job. Our flexibility is one of our biggest strengths.”

“We have a good solid crew of people, and a lot of them have been with us for 30 years.”

-Rodney Goodwin, Project Manager, Alliance Environmental Systems Inc.

Alliance Environmental Systems operates primarily in Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey, with plans to expand into Maryland and Virginia. Its success stems from strong leadership and a cohesive team. Many employees have been with the company for decades, creating a culture of reliability and expertise. This longevity translates into smooth operations and consistent quality.

“We have a good solid crew of people, and a lot of them have been with us for 30 years,” Goodwin stated. “They know the work, they trust each other, and they get the job done safely and efficiently. That consistency is a huge asset for us. We get a lot of repeat work based on our reliability.”

On the jobsite, Alliance Environmental Systems handles every aspect of a project from start to finish. A typical project begins with environmental remediation, followed by demolition and material processing. This end-to-end service allows clients to work with a single contractor, streamlining project timelines and minimizing logistical challenges.

Alliance Environmental Systems President Robert Casciato (right) meets with former Montabert President Maurice Stanich to discuss the implementation of Montabert's products.

“We call it a soup-to-nuts process,” Goodwin explained. “We handle everything from utility shutoffs and asbestos removal to final cleanup. Clients don’t have to worry about coordinating multiple contractors because we take care of it all.”

Efficient equipment from Komatsu

To complete its work efficiently, Alliance Environmental Systems relies heavily on Komatsu equipment from Komatsu Company-owned Dealer East, including a WA200 wheel loader and PC240LC-11, PC360LC-11, PC390LC-11 and PC490LC-11 excavators. Alliance Environmental Systems transitioned to Komatsu equipment in the late 1990s and has since built a strong partnership with the brand.

“We had some issues with servicing and repair work with the previous brand we were using,” Goodwin commented. “As the industry knows, downtime is our worst enemy, and Komatsu helps us keep everything running smoothly. Now, all of our excavators and loaders are Komatsu.”

Alliance Environmental Systems has also invested in new attachments, including Montabert (a Komatsu-owned company) grapples and hammers, as well as Lehnhoff (a Komatsu-owned company) quick couplers, which are designed to help improve efficiency by allowing operators to switch tools quickly without leaving their machines.

“We recently integrated the Lehnhoff quick coupler system with our Montabert grapple,” Goodwin noted. “We’re testing it now, and it looks like a solid investment. We think the new attachments are more efficient, and they’re much quicker to get on and off our equipment, which is something we’re looking forward to.”

The company’s current work at Chestnut Run is a prime example of how its equipment and processes come together. The site involves demolishing multiple buildings, separating materials for recycling and preparing the ground for future development.

An operator uses a Komatsu PC390LC-11 excavator equipped with a Lehnhoff quick coupler and a Montabert grapple attachment to pick up scrap metal, providing dependable results even in snowy conditions.

“Right now, our brand-new PC390LC-11 with a Montabert grapple and Lehnhoff quick coupler is loading out materials,” Goodwin described. “The grapple allows us to separate different types of metal efficiently. Meanwhile, our new PC490LC-11 uses a shear to cut through the structure. Also, our WA200 primarily takes material from one site to the other without having to utilize a dump truck.”

Partnership built on trust

Over the years, Alliance Environmental Systems has developed a close relationship with the staff at Komatsu Company-owned Dealer East, especially Territory Manager Jim McKeever, who provides excellent support when needed.

“The Komatsu team has been great,” Goodwin declared. “Their service department is responsive, their mechanics know our machines, and we trust them to keep our fleet in top condition. We haven’t had any real issues with our machines. They’re solid and have a good team behind them.”

“The Komatsu team has been great. Their service department is responsive, their mechanics know our machines, and we trust them to keep our fleet in top condition.”

Goodwin,

That trust played a role in Alliance Environmental Systems’ decision to invest in new Komatsu machines and attachments. With industry trends shifting toward more advanced technology, the company wanted to stay ahead by integrating the latest equipment into its fleet.

“We saw others in the industry moving in this direction, and we wanted to be on top of that,” Goodwin said. “Komatsu brought us ideas, we tested them out, and now we’re implementing them into our operations. It’s all about staying competitive.”

Outlook

Looking ahead, Alliance Environmental Systems is focused on growth and continued innovation. Expanding into new markets and investing in cutting-edge technology will help the company maintain its reputation for quality and efficiency.

“We’ve been around a long time, and we plan to keep growing,” Goodwin reflected. “With new leadership in place, we’re looking to expand further, increasing our fleet, hiring more skilled workers and moving into new markets.” ■

Educational event for customers

Spring Demo Days 2025 gave attendees a firsthand look at Komatsu’s new solutions and the opportunity to operate equipment

Komatsu’s Customer Center in Cartersville, Ga., buzzed with energy during Spring Demo Days 2025, as contractors, fleet managers and heavy equipment operators from across North America gathered for three days of hands-on experiences, technology previews and one-on-one conversations with Komatsu specialists.

From intelligent machine control (IMC) 3.0 and other Smart Construction solutions like drone surveying tools, the event underscored Komatsu’s commitment to innovation — and more importantly, to the companies and individuals across the construction industry who put that technology to work.

“Spring Demo Days 2025 showcased a range of our Komatsu and partner brands’ products — from our IMC 2.0 dozers and 3D Machine Guidance excavators to the WA485-11 and WA475-11 wheel loaders and Smart Quarry solutions,” said Ethan Staples, Product Demonstration Specialist, Komatsu.

“The highlight this week has been the new Komatsu PC220LCi-12 excavator. As the newest excavator that Komatsu has released, its redesigned cab, integrated technology and jobsite versatility make it a standout for construction companies across the board.”

Customer feedback

According to Staples, the event is structured to give customers value from the moment they arrive.

“Every day starts with a safety and product briefing in our theater, then we rotate attendees through stations — dozers, excavators, loaders, trucks and Smart Construction solutions,” explained Staples. “We station Komatsu team members at each area to inform customers about each machine’s capabilities and offer the customers an opportunity to get real answers to real questions from our experts.”

“Spring Demo Days 2025 showcased a range of our Komatsu and partner brands’ products — from our IMC 2.0 dozers and 3D Machine Guidance excavators to the WA485-11 and WA475-11 wheel loaders and Smart Quarry solutions.”

-Ethan Staples, Product Demonstration Specialist, Komatsu

That personal attention left an impression on Valentine Cortese, owner of AWS Landworks in New Jersey, who recently finished a project two months ahead of schedule thanks to his new Komatsu D71PXi IMC dozer.

“The machine’s performance and the smart grade system really helped with efficiency, wear and tear, and gave us a finished product we were proud of,” Cortese commented. “We’re here today to look into the IMC excavators and drones. The drone presentation was very educational. Demo Days is a great tool for us owners to look at the new technology, future purchases and just the performance of the machines.”

Brandon Wilson, the owner of Wilson Excavation in Utah, added, “This is my first time here, and I would absolutely recommend coming out to Komatsu Demo Days. Where else do you get to play in a big sandbox and try different machines that you can use on your jobsites and for your equipment? It’s great.”

Wilson also noted that his team already runs about 20 Komatsu machines, including several IMC dozers and excavators.

“We love the IMC machines for their cost-effectiveness,” emphasized Wilson. “You move the dirt once, put it in the right place the first time and track production accurately. That translates into stronger bids and better pricing for our clients.”

Technology solutions

Attendees also received a firsthand look at the latest innovations in Smart Construction technology, including faster drone data processing tools, new scheduling and resource-tracking platforms, and cloud-based dashboards that enable contractors to manage assets in real time.

“We’re really grateful and excited to be here and have the opportunity to try out some new products, learn new things, and see how they can help us be more productive and do better work for the people in our community.”

Morgan, Project Manager and Smart Construction Technology Manager, Wilson Excavation

“Komatsu is ahead of the curve when it comes to technology,” declared Luke Morgan, Project Manager and Smart Construction Technology Manager, Wilson Excavation. “We use their IMC machines on every type of project, and we’ve seen huge benefits and boosts in productivity. We’re really grateful and excited to be here and have the opportunity to try out some new products, learn new things, and see how they can help us be more productive and do better work for the people in our community.”

Chris Christiansen, Associate Vice President of Fleet at BHI, echoed the sentiment,

commenting, “We came to Demo Days to learn, test and get our teams’ opinions on what’s next. Komatsu’s equipment performs well, and they’ve demonstrated excellent service over the years. That partnership matters to us.”

Until next time Staples wrapped up the event with a note of gratitude.

“We really appreciate everyone taking time out of their busy schedules to come here,” said Staples. “We want our customers to leave knowing they were heard, supported, and that Komatsu is working hard to help them succeed.” ■

A breast cancer awareness excavator highlights Herman Liedtka Inc.’s community focus and commitment to purpose-driven work

Customer snapshot

Company: Herman Liedtka Inc.

Location: Chesterfield, New Jersey

Employees: 30

Established: 1937

Areas of expertise: Residential site development, excavation, trucking, material sales, and sand and gravel operations

Komatsu equipment: 35 machines, including wheel loaders and excavators

Komatsu technology: Smart Construction 3D Machine Guidance

Herman Liedtka Inc. traces its origins back to 1937, when founder Herman Liedtka started the company with little more than grit, determination and a coal shovel. Nearly 90 years later, the third generation of the Liedtka family carries that legacy. The business has grown substantially since its early days, but it remains grounded in the values on which it was built.

“It means everything to carry on what my grandfather started,” said Jeremy Liedtka, President of Herman Liedtka Inc. “He was always family-oriented and instilled that into us. Taking his vision and continuing it is something I take great pride in.”

“It means everything to carry on what my grandfather started.” -Jeremy Liedtka, President, Herman Liedtka Inc.

Headquartered in Chesterfield, N.J., Herman Liedtka Inc. operates primarily throughout Central Jersey and South Jersey. The business intentionally stays within an hour of its home base, though loyal customers occasionally ask to stretch that boundary.

“Taking care of our customers has allowed us to succeed,“ Jeremy reflected. “Our work is primarily residential site development. We dig basements, do backfills, prep topsoil and provide support on some underground utility work. We also run sand and gravel pits, do our own trucking, and are branching into landscape supply. We’re pretty diversified.”

The company employs about 30 people including Jeremy’s brothers Chris, Will and Andy — though that number can fluctuate depending on the workload. Jeremy noted that maintaining a flexible and reliable team is critical to the type of work Herman Liedtka Inc. performs.

“We run between 25 and 35 people,” Jeremy stated. “Right now, we could use 10 more, but in two months, that might change. We stay agile, which fits the way we operate.”

national homebuilders. Herman Liedtka Inc. is in the second phase of a 700-unit jobsite, which requires careful equipment allocation and logistical coordination.

“Komatsu equipment provides us with the reliability we need.”

-Jeremy Liedtka, President, Herman Liedtka Inc.

“We have two sets of equipment on this project,” Jeremy described. “The north and south phases don’t connect, so we added another Komatsu PC360 excavator to avoid hauling machines back and forth. It’s about being efficient, and Komatsu equipment provides us with the reliability we need.”

Komatsu machines have long been a staple of Herman Liedtka Inc.’s fleet. The company purchased its first Komatsu excavator in 1994 and now runs roughly 35 Komatsu machines, including a wide range of wheel loaders and excavators.

“Our first Komatsu was a PC250, and now we have eight wheel loaders ranging from the WA270 to the WA470, and excavators ranging from mini models up through the PC490,” commented Jeremy.

One of the newest additions to the fleet a pink-wrapped Komatsu PC360LC-11 excavator — has turned heads on the jobsite. The machine was purchased for performance reasons, but its breast cancer awareness decals have brought additional meaning.

“We didn’t request the pink wrap — it was just the machine they had available — but we like it,” Jeremy explained. “My mother had breast cancer, and a good friend’s wife is going through it now. It’s not just about breast cancer — it’s about raising awareness for all cancer, and we’re proud to own and run the machine.”

That excavator has become a visible symbol of the company’s values and connection to the community. Jeremy recalled a project manager recently asking to ensure it stayed

In addition to standard machines, the company has also started incorporating technology through Komatsu’s aftermarket GPS solutions even outfitting a non-Komatsu excavator with Smart Construction 3D Machine Guidance.

“It was a better value than the other manufacturer’s system, and Komatsu’s tech support is just as strong as their mechanical support,” reflected Jeremy.

Building trust over time

That support comes from Komatsu Company-owned Dealer East and Territory Manager Barry Talley, who has worked with the Liedtka family for more than 20 years.

“Barry has become a very good friend, and the product support is just incredible,” Jeremy shared. “If we have a problem, they’re out the same day or the next. That kind of response makes all the difference in this business.”

Downtime is costly, especially in the competitive world of site development. Jeremy emphasized that Komatsu

By the numbers

Company-owned Dealer East’s responsiveness plays a major role in Herman Liedtka Inc.’s operational reliability.

“Every minute you’re down, it’s money lost,” Jeremy stated. “That’s why product support is so important. If Komatsu doesn’t have a part in stock, they’ll find it. They bend over backwards for us, and everyone from the mechanics to the techs knows us on a first-name basis.”

Relationships are key to the Liedtka way of doing business — whether with customers, employees or equipment partners.

"Komatsu is just as invested in our success as we are."

-Jeremy Liedtka, President, Herman Liedtka Inc.

“The machines are reliable and comfortable, but what keeps us coming back is the product support,” Jeremy emphasized. “Komatsu is just as invested in our success as we are. They’re a partner. That’s why we stick with them.”

Continued legacy

As the company looks to the future, Jeremy is optimistic. His son is studying business at Montana State University and plans to return to the company, and his nephew has begun running equipment on-site.

“The goal is to make it to 100 years,” Jeremy declared. “We’re continuing to diversify — maybe demolition, recycling, who knows? I just want to support the next generation however I can and keep growing the business.”

The Liedtka name has remained synonymous with hard work, dependability and service for nearly nine decades. That reputation, paired with trusted partners and a strong fleet, continues to drive the business forward. ■

Tax-advantaged machinery purchases

Bonus depreciation returns to 100%

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) has restored 100% bonus depreciation for qualified property placed in service after Jan. 19, 2025, provided that it is acquired under a binding written contract executed on or after that date.1

This reinstated 100% bonus depreciation encourages businesses to invest in capital improvements by providing a full tax deduction in the first year the asset is placed in service. However, the eligibility depends on the execution date of the purchase agreement contracts signed prior to Jan. 19, 2025, are only eligible for 40% bonus depreciation, even if the asset is placed in service later in the year.2

Higher amounts for Section 179

One key advantage of bonus depreciation is that it has no cap on the amount that can be deducted. Businesses can also combine bonus depreciation with Section 179 expensing, another powerful tax-saving tool, although Section 179 does include an annual limit. Section 179 may be particularly useful for smaller capital equipment purchases such as machinery or software. ■

Engineered for those who get it done

Next-generation Komatsu PC220LC-12 and PC220LCi-12 deliver greater comfort, performance and smart technology for today’s hard-working operators

Komatsu’s new PC220LC-12 and PC220LCi-12 excavators are built for contractors who want more than just power. Delivering the most comfortable and advanced excavator work environment Komatsu has ever created, the PC220LC-12 and PC220LCi-12 are operator-first machines that blend performance, comfort and smart technology to help boost productivity, shift after shift.

From the ground up, these 21- to 24-ton-class excavators have been reimagined and engineered around a simple premise — empower operators and you’ll power productivity on your jobsite. The cab offers 28% more space, 30% more legroom, improved visibility, reduced noise and vibration, and a high-quality heated air-suspension seat. The new 8-inch HD monitor puts machine data, controls and customization options at an operator’s fingertips.

Performance gains back up the comfort. A new electronically controlled hydraulic system and high-output engine help deliver an up to 8% increase in digging force, up to 7% more lift capacity and up to 20% cost reduction in fuel than the previous Komatsu PC210LC-11 model. The new P plus mode boosts workload productivity by up to 18%.

Advanced tech and safety

While the PC220LC-12 has some integrated baseline smart technology, such as 2D machine control, contractors looking for next-level capabilities can step up to the Komatsu PC220LCi-12, which adds intelligent machine control (IMC) 3.0, Komatsu’s latest smart technology.

Automated features on the PC220LCi-12, such as auto grade assist, auto stop control, bucket angle hold, compaction control, minimum distance control, auto swing and payload monitoring, help reduce operator workload while improving accuracy and boosting productivity. 3D boundary control is the first OEM factory-integrated feature of its kind in the construction industry. It’s a unique technology that helps operators work efficiently across the entire jobsite by remembering multiple restriction zones specific to each work area. Auto-swing with travel stop functionality is also an industry first for excavators.

To promote zero harm, these excavators have features like rollover avoidance, KomVision 360-degree camera coverage, object detection, automatic deceleration controls, seat belt reminders and more. Maintenance is simplified with ground-level service points and extended replacement intervals, helping reduce maintenance costs by up to 20%.

By empowering operators with enhanced comfort, cutting-edge technology and customizable features, the Komatsu PC220LC-12 and PC220LCi-12 excavators represent the next step forward for contractors seeking to maximize productivity and reduce total cost of ownership. ■

*All percentage claims are based on a comparison to the previous PC210LC-11 model. Reductions in maintenance costs are due to longer replacement intervals for hydraulic oil and oil filters and longer cleaning intervals for the particulate filter.

says

Komatsu

is working hard to help make sure you can access the information you need faster

This is one of a series of articles based on interviews with key people at Komatsu discussing the company’s commitment to its customers in the construction and mining industries – and their visions for the future.

Mike Gidaspow,

This year marks Mike Gidaspow’s 25th anniversary with Komatsu. He began his career with the company in 2000 as a test engineer and has since held a variety of roles across multiple departments. From 2014 to 2020, he served as a regional director before taking on the leadership of Komatsu’s digital solutions and strategy team in 2020. Since 2022, he has overseen several key areas, including strategic planning, product and parts marketing, Reman, and service. In his most recent role, Gidaspow was named Chief Digital Officer in 2024.

“I had a number of responsibilities before, and as a company, we determined digital solutions was an area that needed more focus,” said Gidaspow. “As we look to where our industry needs improvement, needs to continue forward, this is a big gap for us and our competitors. How do we really move the construction, mining and forestry industries into the digital age and really improve efficiency? Improving our digital footprint is a big step in the right direction for the future.”

During his time with Komatsu, Gidaspow earned an MBA, underwent numerous trainings and served on industry boards such as the Association of Equipment Manufacturers. After a quarter century, Gidaspow said he’s still excited to come to work every day.

“Komatsu is a lot of great things,” Gidaspow stated. “The products we make are second-to-none, and as a company, we are encouraged to always do things with SLQDC safety, legal, quality, delivery and cost — in mind, in that order. We pride ourselves on that. I continue to learn. I believe there’s always a way to make an impact at Komatsu and on our industry.”

Gidaspow and his wife, Julie, enjoy attending their sons’ activities and spending time together. Gidaspow also likes to “keep moving” by bicycle riding and hiking.

Answer: Our digital team, which is made up of about 100 people, is responsible for Komatsu dealer and customer-facing applications and technologies, such as Smart Construction, intelligent machine control, Smart Quarry and My Komatsu. We also manage our komatsu.com website and Komatsu-affiliated websites. The Komatsu Experience is one overarching project our team was founded for that aims to link all of our solutions together. We’re working on that kind of umbrella project and pulling in other projects over time.

“We’re always working to make it easier to do business with Komatsu.”

-Mike Gidaspow, Chief Digital Officer, Komatsu

We’re always working to make it easier to do business with Komatsu. Customers have largely had to go to multiple sites to get information, which can be hard to keep track of with many usernames and passwords. We are working to consolidate those so that there is one site for the public, which is komatsu.com, and one for our customers, which is mykomatsu.komatsu, where someone can get the information they are seeking as easily as possible.

I think of it from a manufacturer’s mindset: How do I build a machine with the highest quality as easily and repeatably as possible? Now, how do I do that with the customer experience on the digital side? We’ve added more digital marketing and customer support personnel to do that.

Question: Why is that important?

Answer: One of the things we hear from customers is that Komatsu has all this great data. How can we get it to more quickly make faster decisions that affect my production? They also want to order parts or look up manuals more easily, and we are working to make that happen by moving our e-commerce to komatsu.com.

Our goal is to get them to the information they want and need as quickly and simply

as possible. An example would be the ability to get jobsite and machine information from our Smart Construction solutions, such as Smart Construction Remote and Dashboard, and order parts or look up manuals from a single source with My Komatsu for fleet management. It also includes being able to access information on machines from other manufacturers that customers may be using.

“How do we really move the construction, mining and forestry industries into the digital age and really improve efficiency? Improving our digital footprint is a big step in the right direction for the future.”

Question: Does artificial intelligence, or AI, fit into this strategy?

Answer: It absolutely does. At this time, I don’t know if anybody can accurately answer where AI is going to be in five or 10 years as advancements continue to evolve faster than any of us would expect. We’re working to make it more accessible. In the future, one of

the reasons we want to pull all these systems together for customers is to start bringing data together and then use AI to help optimize customers’ operations. We’re excited about what’s possible now and what’s coming in the future, and we encourage customers to visit our website and contact their Komatsu dealer for additional information. ■

Putting people first

A unified HR team at Komatsu Company-owned Dealer East is helping drive positive employee experiences, development and long-term organizational success

At Komatsu Company-owned Dealer East, the human resources team is essential to ensuring employees are empowered, processes run smoothly and business goals are achieved. Led by Regional HR Manager Tonya Karcher, the four-person HR team plays a central role in providing the tools and structure needed for people and departments to thrive.

“We view ourselves as a support system for every employee and leader,” said Karcher. “Whether it’s a technician on the floor, a parts team member at the counter or someone new on their first day, our goal is to make sure they’re set up for success and have a positive experience throughout their time at Komatsu.”

While the team is relatively new — with all four members joining within the past two years— their performance has been widely recognized across the company. Their ability to support each other and the wider business has allowed the HR department to grow quickly in impact and effectiveness.

Team roles

Senior Recruiter Chadd Balbi leads talent acquisition efforts across the region.

“I handle most of the hiring process — from sourcing and interviewing to making sure the right people are coming into the business,” Balbi explained. “It’s important to me that the candidates we bring in are not only qualified but excited about being part of Komatsu. That foundation sets the tone for their future here.”

HR Generalist Ally Sheets works across a wide range of functions to keep operations running smoothly.

“My role touches many areas — onboarding, payroll, employee support and working alongside leadership,” described Sheets. “Each day is different, and that variety allows us to make a real impact across the business. We’re always looking for ways to improve how we support our teams.”

HR Coordinator Matt Sedall manages the administrative side of HR, handling tasks that are critical to day-to-day operations.

“I like to say I’m the silent engine,” Sedall declared. “I focus on reporting, payroll and union coordination, making sure everything behind the scenes runs efficiently. When employees

get accurate paychecks or seamless onboarding experiences, that’s a result of the work we’re doing.”

Working collaboratively

The team’s strength comes from individual skills as well as a shared sense of accountability.

“We collaborate constantly,” commented Sedall. “Whether we’re in the office or working remotely, we’re always communicating, and that makes a huge difference. Leadership here really supports that dynamic.”

Karcher emphasized that their efforts are aligned with broader business goals.

“Everything we do in HR is ultimately in support of operations,” Karcher said. “Chadd brings in new talent, Matt ensures accurate and timely payroll, and Ally manages everything in between. That attention to detail and consistency builds trust across the company.”

Investing in people

As Komatsu Company-owned Dealer East continues to grow, so does the importance of the HR team.

“The number of employees in our region has reached levels we haven’t seen before, and we’re still expanding,” reflected Balbi. “It’s exciting to know the roles we’re hiring for today are helping drive long-term growth and opportunity.”

The team takes pride in supporting Komatsu’s commitment to employee development and retention.

“One of the things I appreciate most is the investment in learning,” shared Sedall. “Through platforms like LinkedIn Learning, we’re encouraged to keep growing in our roles. That kind of support motivates all of us.”

Karcher attributes much of the team’s progress to mutual respect and a common purpose.

“We’ve built this team in under two years, and we’re already making a difference,” Karcher noted. “We’re visible, we’re valued, and we’re here to help employees succeed. People come to us for assistance and guidance, and I think that says a lot for this team.”

Sedall summed it up simply: “We’re putting the human back in human resources. We care about people, and that shows in the way we do our work — together.”

Control wear while driving productivity

Komatsu’s Parallel Link Undercarriage System aims to maximize machine life, minimize downtime and cut long-term operating costs

Awell-built undercarriage does more than support the machine — it can help protect uptime, help control costs, and assist performance in tough conditions. From bushing design to track tensioning, every detail matters when it comes to keeping equipment productive over time. That’s why Komatsu’s Parallel Link Undercarriage System (PLUS) is engineered with the goal of distributing wear evenly, simplifying maintenance and delivering long-term durability where it counts most.

“Undercarriage costs can represent up to 50% of a dozer’s lifetime maintenance,” said Raf Bukowski, Product Marketing Manager for HST Dozers, Komatsu. “That’s why Komatsu made durability and service life the top priorities with the PLUS undercarriage. We’ve focused on smarter wear distribution, simplified maintenance and materials that last. All of that [can] translate into real savings and less downtime for customers.”

Performance-focused design

The most notable innovation of PLUS is its rotating bushing technology. Unlike systems that require manual bushing rotation, Komatsu’s design allows bushings to float around the pin, promoting even wear with the goal of extending component life.

“With PLUS, you’re getting nearly double the life compared to traditional undercarriages before any major intervention is needed,” Bukowski explained. “Time is money in this industry. If you can run longer without pulling machines into the shop, that’s a huge win.”

PLUS also includes a self-adjusting idler that automatically works to maintain optimal track tension. This is designed to help minimize track slippage and premature wear, helping operators maintain performance while assisting to protect the system over time.

“It works like a cruise control for track tension,” stated Bukowski. “It’s snug enough to perform well but loose enough to help protect the components. That balance adds up over thousands of operating hours.”

With durability in mind, Komatsu also redesigned key structural elements. Carrier rollers now feature thicker material and updated flange geometry to promote even link contact, while segmented sprockets are shaped to shed material and resist packing in challenging terrain.

“Every inch of the system is purpose-built,” Bukowski declared. “We’ve made iterative

improvements based on field feedback. This isn’t the same undercarriage you saw five or six years ago.”

Smart technology integration

PLUS pairs with Komatsu’s intelligent machine control (IMC) technology to help control overall machine stress and promote extended undercarriage life. As the load increases during operation, the machine automatically adjusts the blade to help prevent track slippage, helping to control unnecessary wear on the system.

“Our dozers don’t just push dirt — they respond like experienced operators,” commented Tony Kosolofski, Komatsu IMC Product Manager in Canada. “With IMC 2.0, we’ve given the machine the ability to predict terrain changes and adjust proactively. That helps reduce operator fatigue and undercarriage strain.”

“Komatsu’s experts showcase the PLUS undercarriage system on a D71PXi-24 IMC dozer at Demo Days 2025.”

-Raf Bukowski, Product Marketing Manager for HST Dozers, Komatsu

Komatsu IMC dozers like the D71PXi-24 and D61PXi-24 use track mapping to capture real-time as-built data and apply features such as lift layer control, which helps promote consistent compaction thicknesses. That data integrates seamlessly with Komatsu’s Smart Construction Dashboard, enabling users to compare performance day by day.

“When we talk about undercarriage wear, we’re also talking about how you use the machine,” Kosolofski added. “Technology that limits unnecessary spinning, slipping or overworking helps stretch the life of every component.” ■

Building a legacy

Mike Swanson’s three-decade track shop career leaves a lasting impact on Komatsu Company-owned Dealer East’s Winslow operation

For nearly three decades, Mike Swanson has been the steady hand behind the track shop at Komatsu Company-owned Dealer East’s Winslow, N.J., location. As a senior shop technician, Swanson’s knowledge enables him to handle any repair with the assurance that each machine leaves the shop in proper working condition. Over the years, he’s watched the industry evolve from the inside out.

“It’s been about thirty years working on tracks and undercarriages,” Swanson recalled. “I started when the old sealed and lubricated tracks still used leather seals. Now, the technology is miles ahead and really holds up.”

With a 225-ton press and state-of-the-art tools, Swanson can rebuild entire undercarriages, press out links and reseal track adjusters with a level of efficiency that draws repair work from other branches. His shop stays busy because it is brand agnostic — customers know they can bring in any machine that needs attention, and Swanson and his team have the expertise to fix it. That mix of technical capability and customer trust has defined his approach for decades.

“We don’t turn away any machine,” Swanson explained. “Our goal is to be a place where customers know we’ll get it done right, whether it’s all Komatsu or a mixed fleet. That’s what keeps people coming back. There’s really nothing we can’t handle.”

From inexperienced to mentor

Like many in the industry, Swanson didn’t grow up working on heavy equipment. His first exposure came after the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard shut down, leaving him out of a job. While towing an old Mustang he planned to rebuild, he ran into a friend from disc golf — a product support representative for Komatsu — who mentioned an opening at his branch’s track shop. That conversation led to a new opportunity and a hands-on introduction to undercarriage work. It was a career change that turned out to be a perfect fit.

“I had no idea what undercarriages were when I started,” Swanson admitted. “A guy showed me the basics for a week, then told me I was pretty much on my own. I had to learn as I went, but I realized pretty quickly that as long as everything’s torqued tight, everything holds.”

Now, as much a mentor as a technician, Swanson takes pride in passing on his knowledge to the next generation. He believes the same discipline and care that go into a good repair should guide how newer technicians approach the job every day.

“You have to let the newer guys ask questions and learn by doing,” Swanson commented. “I always tell them, even if you think you know, ask anyway — it’s better to be sure. That’s how you stay safe and get better at your work.”

In addition to repairing equipment, Swanson has always prioritized safety and maintaining a clean, organized shop. He believes that presenting a well-kept facility not only creates a safer work environment but also builds customer confidence in the quality of the work being done.

“You want the place to look professional and your people to work in a safe environment,” Swanson emphasized. “Customers notice when a shop is clean and things are in order — it tells them we take their machines seriously. Neatness and safety really do count.”

Retirement plans

As Swanson prepares for retirement, it’s clear that no single person will step in to replace him. Instead, he’s training multiple people — one focused on tracks, another on safety and a third on building upkeep — to cover the full range of responsibilities he’s managed over the years.

“It’s easier to stay in shape than to get in shape,” Swanson noted. “We want this place to keep looking sharp, and that takes consistent attention. If something needs fixing, we take care of it.”

Once retired, Swanson looks forward to putting down the wrench and spending more time traveling with his wife, Randi, and their pack of rescued pets.

“My wife loves to rescue animals — right now, we have three dogs, four cats, a rabbit and even a rescued fish,” Swanson said with a laugh. “We’re thinking about getting a nice little RV to pile everyone into and hit the road. I have a rebuilt ’79 Lincoln that I’ll be taking on some road trips, maybe up to Niagara Falls or down to the Outer Banks. It’ll be nice to explore the country and just enjoy the ride.” ■
