CAREER FAIR The two CM annual career fairs (in September 2017 and February 2018) were held in the Bone Student Center. The CM fairs had a great turnout with 73 employers attending (37 in fall and 33 in spring). More than 200, primarily CM students with the addition of a few safety and renewable energy major students attended these events in search of internship and permanent job opportunities.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES COMPETITIONS Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) Three Construction Management student teams competed in the 2017 Associated Schools of Construction Region III Student Competition in Downers Grove, Illinois on October 18-21-2017.

Commercial Team The Commercial Construction team consisted of Damian Chojnowski-Team Captain, Nick Fischer, Sam LasScala, Logan Thompson, Kevin O’Riley, Brett Weaver, and Dr. Euysup Shim (faculty coach). The Commercial Team’s project was a Chicago Park District boathouse construction project that was constructed by Walsh Construction, the competition sponsor. The project included two buildings for storing rowing shells and field house with workout spaces for rowers. The ISU commercial team competed with other teams from Illinois, Michigan, Kentucky, Wisconsin, and Ohio. The Illinois State Commercial Team placed first in two consecutive years.

Design-Build Team Team Captain Faris Kahvedzic, Dylan Hoskins, Mariah Bormann, Justin Keyt, Chad Rogers, and Travis Woolen competed in the ASC Design-Build Student Competition. Their project was a facility addition health care project called the Feel Good Health Systems Project set up and judged by McCarthy Construction. The team was coached by Dr. Haiyan (Sally) Xie.

Pre-Construction Team The Illinois State Pre-Construction Competition Team consisted of team captain Karl Taillon, Alan Avitia, Dominic Tassone, Andre Lagasca, Aaron Fish, Mike May and Dr. Euysup Shim (faculty coach). The team participated in the competition for the first time, and placed second . The PreConstruction team project was the Columbia College Chicago Student Center project constructed by the Pepper Construction, the competition sponsor. The project included a five-story, 114,000 square-foot student center in Chicago’s South Loop.

National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) Competition Karl Taillon, Damian Chojnowski, Sam LaScala and Logan Thompson participated in the ELECTRI International/NECA Green Energy Challenge in Seattle, Washington on October 7-10, 2017. The NECA Green Energy Challenge is a highlight of the annual National Electrical Contractors Association Conference showcasing NECA Student Chapters. Several NECA student chapters participated in the 2017 realworld challenge competition which asked students to develop real solutions with the assistance of NECA members and chapters. This year, the competition focused on designing an energy upgrade for the local YWCA. The Illinois State team placed 6th for their design for an electrical upgrade for the local YWCA in Bloomington, Illinois. Their bid and specifications for the YWCA project included lighting, HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning), as well as, solar panels. The Illinois State team also placed 2nd in a poster competition while in Seattle. This competition required the students to create an informative poster about the project. NECA’s third annual student job fair followed the Green Energy Challenge Student Competition. The job fair was designed to expose students to a variety of employment and internship opportunities within the electrical construction industry.

American Concrete Institute (ACI) Competition The Illinois State ACI Bowling Ball competition team, consisting of Nick Fischer- team captain, Chad Rogers, Aaron Fish, Ryan Long, Zach Simmons, and Dr. Pranshoo Solanki (faculty coach), participated in the ACI fiber reinforced concrete bowling ball competition in Salt Lake City, UT, on March 26-28, 2018. The competition was about creating a unique mix and design for the construction of a concrete bowling ball.

“Getting to expand your knowledge in a subject such as concrete and being able to network with other professors and supply companies was a great experience and one that I would definitely recommend. I strongly encourage any student to join the ACI team and get involved, you’ll learn a lot and put your classroom skills to use, and it gives you the chance to represent the Construction Management program. .”

DOE Race to Zero Design Competition Illinois State University Construc on Management and Interior Design students lead a team in the 5th annual US Department of Energy Race to Zero Student Design Compe on in the commercial Elementary school division. The team represented by Maggie McCafferty, Dimitri Giatras, Courtney Linn, Duncan Mathews, Michael May, Cory Muehlfelt, and Krista Kozak advised by Joseph Cleary worked closely with McLean County Unit 5 school district based in Normal, Illinois to design a highperformance elementary school with the target of net zero energy. Although the team did not advance to the na onal level, they presented at the Associa on of Professional Energy Consultants (APEC) of Central Illinois at the April mee ng.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES Mechanical Contractors Association of America (MCAA) Competition The Illinois State MCAA competition team, consisting of Logan Wible-team captain, Nick Smeets, Kevin Carder, Mike Cholko, David Wilhold, Madeline Kladar, Kate Mesenbring and Prof. Joe Cleary (faculty advisor) participated in the MCAA student competition. The competition project encompassed the design and installation of a VRF HVAC system to be installed in the heart of Manhattan. The team received a Certificate of Merit.

MCAA National Convention and ISU Student Chapter The Illinois State University MCAA Student Chapter, supported by the Mechanical Contractors Association of Chicago was represented by Logan Wible, Kevin Carder, David Wilhold, Madeline Kladar, Kate Msenbring and Jonathan Smith a3ended the MCAA Great Futures Forum in Indianapolis, IN in September 2017 to represent the ISU MCAA student chapter.

These students competed in the MCAA student competition and attended many MCA of Chicago career development events.

ASC Sophomore Scholarship and Workshop Three Illinois State students, Jason Love, Juan Bosque, and Ryan Lambke, received and participated in the ASC Sophomore Scholarship & Workshop in October, 2017 in Downers Grove, IL. The Scholarship & Workshop is for deserving underclassman to get exposed construction industry through in classroom instruction, site visits, and opportunities to network with professional. “The ASC Sophomore Workshop was a great experience! It provided an opportunity to learn about different facets of the construction industry, network with industry leaders, participate in mock bidding scenarios, and meet students from other universities. I would strongly recommend attending this workshop.�

CMSA Meetings

Women in Construction (WIC) Courtney Linn is a Senior CM student. She was a transfer student from Winona State University going into her Junior year. She is the CMSA Historian, on the ASC Preconstruction Team, and a student ambassador for the Department of Technology.

Courtney and her peer, Madeline Kladar, decided to begin the Women in Construction (WIC) group at ISU to further engage different majors entering the construction industry and to show support for the women in the construction world.

WIC will unite Construction Management, Renewable Energy, Safety, Interior Design, and Engineering Technology students with females in the construction industry. WIC will provide students within these majors the opportunity to learn more about a career within construction and supply opportunities for them to connect with the industry earlyon. With the Construction Management Program’s connections to various construction companies, WIC wants to share these networks with other majors and also open up doors for females in the industry to share their experiences.

More companies and nationwide college programs are beginning to form women’s networks, WIC wants ISU and the students interested in construction to have an opportunity to voice their goals and feel confident in their career decisions.

Vincent Cecchin is a Junior at ISU studying Construction Management. His passion for construction started at a very young age from the family construction company.

After high school he spent a year working as a sewer water laborer at CPH before joining the US Air Force as a Structural Engineer.

Specializing in Carpentry, Masonry, Welding, Roofing, and much more, he deployed with the Spec Capes J2 Charlie team conducting Construction and deconstruction missions throughout the entire Middle East. When his enlistment was over he decided to use his experiences and go to college to study the field I knew and loved with my younger brother Anthony Cecchin in the CM program here at ISU.

This Semester CMSA will be conducting its job site visits hosted by Pepper Con., Power Con, and others in the Chicagoland area. We will also be having a representative from BLUEBEAM come down and give us an intro into one of the most popular and successful Construction Management site programs that help control every aspect on the job site from office to field.

CMSA offers education and experience outside of the classroom to all its members that plan on going into the Construction Management field including CM, Safety, Interior Design, and Engineering Technology majors. We host guest speakers, usually ISU Alum, and conduct job site visits hosted by local and national General Contracting companies, to learn real life issues and scenarios that they have run into and how they overcame each obstacle. Although we are Construction Managers and not laborers, we also take pride in visiting our local Union Halls such as the 150 Operators Union, to learn about the training and education they receive before working on the job sites. This also gains a mutual respect between our members and the union workers that is just as important as any other aspect when working together on site. Also, we allow the opportunity for our members to go even further beyond by participating in Construction based volunteer work such as Habitat for Hu-

MCAA Kevin Carder is the President of the Mechanical Contractors Association of America (MCAA) Student Chapter at ISU. He has been involved with MCAA for three years, learning the importance of the Mechanical Industry. Kevin hopes to continue to strengthen the relationships between students and industry professionals in the upcoming year. This is accomplished through incorporating jobsite tours and guest speakers into our monthly meetings.

Members of the MCAA Student Chapter will compete in MCAA’s National Student Competition, which begins at the end of September and continues through December. This competition allows students to dive deeper into a variety of mechanical concepts, while testing their project management skills. Students involved with the competition team also have the opportunity to travel to MCAA’s various conventions. MCAA is an excellent way for students to become involved in the Mechanical industry and expand their knowledge.

Graduate Testimonial: Levi Bauer As a 2016 ISU alumnus, I feel grateful that I am able to demonstrate the skills and abilities that I learned in the Construction Management program on a daily basis.

In my two years as an estimator at River City Construction, I have learned that construction is a challenging industry. As a commercial and industrial estimator for a large regional general contractor bidding complex and technically diverse projects, there is a tremendous level of information to filter, interpret and apply. Failure in any one of these steps could lead to severe loss on the part of the entire project team.

I feel fortunate that I entered this industry with a toolset well suited to the task that set before me. My education in the CM program created a context for this information and how it can be effectively managed. Although it is inevitable that the open ended environment of the workplace will always differ drastically from the controlled environment of the classroom, I find myself often remembering this theories and concepts I learned at ISU. From Computerized Estimating, Construction Documents, Project Accounting, Contract, and BIM, the lessons learned in these classes are the framework that makes up the apparatus of my professional career.

FACULTY NEWS NEW FACULTY Prof. Randy Jacobs Professor Jacobs is a graduate of Illinois State University, BS – in Technology Education 86’ and MS in Industrial Training 95’. Prior to becoming a full-time instructor at ISU, Mr. Jacobs has worn many hats in industries related to construction and manufacturing.

Prof. Jacobs has held positions with a local truss and panelized home manufacturer as a draftsman, estimator, engineering

manager and regional sales manager. He was able to make many contacts with local architects, contractors, code inspectors, and engineers while developing an understanding of communication techniques that require success in a competitive business environment.

Also having worked as a project manager for a local designbuild commercial and residential contractor and developer, Prof. Jacobs continued to develop relevant skills in construction project management.

While working in these industries Prof. Jacobs also taught part-time for post-secondary institutions: Bradley University, Heartland Community College, ICC, ISU and Parkland College. His work experience and teaching background make for a good combination of talents in the classroom.

Dr. Solanki’s Research Dr. Pranshoo Solanki is an associate professor in the construction management program. His research interests are in the area of recycling of waste materials and industrial by-products in sustainable construction. Recently, Dr. Solanki delivered a keynote lecture entitled “Use of Recycled Materials and Industrial By-products in Sustainable Construction” at Environmental Challenges in Civil Engineering (ECCE) conference in Opole, Poland. Currently, Dr. Solanki is working on a project entitled “Recycled Glass: Cement/Fly Ash Substitute in CLSM” funded by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This is a multi-disciplinary project and primary objective of this study is to determine feasibility of utilization of recycled glass from single-stream recycling facility in controlled low strength material (CLSM or flowable fill).

Glass is often a byproduct of many municipal recycling programs (see photograph from Midwest Fiber Recycling). Current state of practice by materials recovery facilities (MRFs) is to ship the mixed glass to sorting facilities where it is cleaned and separated by color which represents significant financial burden to the program due to the lack of a market for mixed glass. At local level in the State of Illinois, recycling generates approximately 360 tons per month of mixed glass debris in Bloomington-Normal, Illinois area alone.

Out of 360 tons, approximately 60 tons is debris and approximately 300 tons is glass of various colors (see photographs below). This mixed glass is heavily polluted with debris containing shredded paper, glue residue and other materials which requires extra costs for cleaning. The most immediate outcome from this project would be the specification of glass-based CLSM in one or more local construction projects.

FACULTY NEWS Dr. Shim’s Summer Internship In Summer 2018, Dr. Shim participated in a six-week industry residency with Pepper Construction through the Robert L. Bowen Industry Residency Initiative sponsored by the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) Education and Research Foundation. His industry residency objectives were to sharpen his estimating skills, specifically in regards to estimating computer software, and to learn how a Building Information Modeling (BIM) model is incorporated into diverse types of estimating for construction projects.

During his residency, Shim worked in the estimating department of Pepper Construction in Barrington, Illinois. He was assigned to diverse estimating jobs including hard bids, budget development, conceptual estimates, and schematic estimates. Through working with multiple estimating computer software programs, Shim was able to improve his knowledge of the programs and his estimating skills. In addition, he observed how a BIM model was used and incorporated into the development of a conceptual or schematic estimate. He plans to incorporate his new expertise and the skills he honed during his residency experience into his estimating class.

“It was an excellent experience to enhance my teaching after over ten years of teaching, and my Construction Management students at Illinois State University will be the beneficiaries of this experience,” Shim said.

Dr. Xie’s Research Dr. Sally Xie, and her graduate assistant, Yao Shi, received a $5,000 ISU Research Grant to work on the project of “Big Data and Sensor Network for Construction Material Testing”. Having precise understanding of the strength development progress of concrete in natural environment helps to save project time and cost. However, the current practice of concrete tasks depends on the published laboratory test data, charts and curves, which would not show the frequently-changing environmental conditions happened in real world. The research objective is to design a reliable and accurate method to validate the test data of the strength developments of concrete specimens in early ages. The approach includes the tasks: (1) arrange sensors to monitor the temperature data of in-place concrete; (2)

record the sensor data automatically; and (3) design the temperature control on a concrete-curing device to keep the curing conditions of the specimens the same as what the in-place concrete has. In addition to journal publications, the research process and system design are described in Yao’s Master Thesis.

Dr. Xie’s another research project is Immersive VR Experience in Undergraduate Technology and Design Courses.

This study is to examine how to improve student capabilities in making design selections related to building materials and connections. Particularly, Dr. Xie and her students focus on the following innovative pedagogical elements: (1) problem based learning for spatial-graphical recognition of structures or patterns with practicality and sustainability; (2) role playing as pedagogical tools in team work. The identification of spatial objects and their relationships are important to the success of students in architectural, engineering, and construction disciplines. Using the Teaching Innovation Grant of ISU in 2017, Dr. Xie made progress in helping students to design and build 3D building models and creating immersive 3D virtual-reality experience for students to observe, examine and analyze building models.

Students designed the “Lake House” model in TEC 117 Construction Graphics class using SketchUp software in spring 2018. They scanned the code in the picture with a smart phone and used the Google Cardboard tool to share the experience of walking through or around the building model. The VR experience helped students to understand the details of project development, construction, interior design, and real estate with project models. The research findings will be published in conferences and journals. This technique has great potential for industry implementations.

ALUMNI NEWS 2018 CAST Hall of Fame Inductee: William F. Burfeind IV William F. Burfeind IV is a dynamic construction executive with 24 years of experience in professional services, cost estimating, preconstruction consulting, and project management for commercial interiors, education, and mixed-use development projects.

Graduating from Illinois State with a B.S. in construction management, Burfeind has held various industry positions including project engineer, project manager, estimator, chief estimator, and business development director for a $100 million revenue business. His career path and accomplishments are highlighted by management and leadership tenures with Turner Construction Co. and J.C. Anderson.

Integral to J.C. Anderson’s executive team, Burfeind oversees marketing and business development, including account management and project delivery, and plays a crucial role in revenue generation, corporate initiatives, strategic planning, team management, and cultivating and maintaining client relationships throughout Chicago’s commercial real estate and interiors construction market.

Burfeind applies expertise in organizational sales and business development and leads the strategy for more profitable revenue over the long term. Working closely with the team, J.C. Anderson’s gross sales have increased 60 percent over the past five years. As principal in charge, Burfeind helped J.C. Anderson execute programs and added prolific clientele including Yelp, Verizon, Paylocity, the Chicago Bears, and United Airlines.

An active member of The Economic Club of Chicago, Burfeind also serves on the board of directors for Chicago Loop Alliance and the Dean’s Advisory Board of Illinois State University College of Applied Science and Technology. In 2013 he received the Department of Technology’s Distinguished Alumnus Award for outstanding achievement.

Married 17 years to Kara (Montello) ’96 with two children, Elizabeth and William V, Burfeind and his family are actively involved in the community, school district, and multiple charities.

2018 TEC Distinguished Alum: Adam Kimball Adam Kimball is the Senior Vice President of Operations at FE Moran Security Solutions. FE Moran Security is a local and national security provider of professional alarm monitoring, video camera surveillance, door access control, fire alarm, burglar/panic alarm, electronic article surveillance and other low voltage and monitored systems. FE Moran is currently ranked 34th on SDM Magazines’ Top 100 Security Companies in the Country, with a plan to be in the top 20 by 2020. Mr. Kimball is on the executive leadership team providing strategy, ensuring that Company priorities are set, and goals are achieved. His operations team works tirelessly to make doing busy with FE Moran easy for their external and internal clients while ensuring the company meets their financial commitments. Before joining the Team at FE Moran, Mr. Kimball spent 20 years in the Construction industry as a Construction Manager, Client Rep, General Contractor, Sub Contractor and Carpenter. Over the years he has been involved with over $1 Billion in construction projects mainly working for Turner Construction and the University of Illinois. Mr. Kimball graduated from Illinois State University with a Bachelor of Science in Construction Management in 2002. He later obtained a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Illinois in 2015. Mr. Kimball currently serves on the Illinois State University Construction Management advisory board, is involved at Grace Church of Mahomet and coach’s youth football, soccer, baseball and wrestling. He enjoys maintaining a strong relationship with his alma maters as an active alumnus, sponsoring class projects, guest lecturing and providing mentorship through internship. He currently resides in Mahomet, IL with his wife Jodi and their children Tate (9) and Kennedy (11). In his free time, Adam enjoys CrossFit, coaching and entrepreneurial ventures.
