As a pillar of the construction machinery sector, the importance of cranes and heavy moving equipment cannot be overemphasized. Usually the first piece of equipment to arrive at a construction site and the last to leave, the crane is often the fulcrum around which other equipment works.

In this special report we take a look at some of the crane and heavy moving equipment manufacturers, as well as related service providers, who are providing the market with new models and technologies, as well as improved ways of back-up service.

The equipment market may no longer in its heady days of a few years ago, but crane segments such as rough-terrains, all-terrains and tower cranes are doing relatively well, as a spate of new orders over the past 12 months can testify.

With urgency returning to projects in the region, such as for Dubai’s Expo 2020, the future is full of hope, say crane manufacturers and service providers, while revealing the region’s penchant for specific crane models. Indeed, more and more of these towering sentinels of the construction industry are becoming markers of activity.

he Middle East crane and lifting products market has shown a steady bias over the years towards tower cranes and roughterrain cranes (RTC). Unsurprisingly so.

With the breakneck pace of tower block construction that cities in the region have witnessed for the last several years, tower cranes manufacturers have found possibly their best global market in the GCC. Whether or not the rumour of a few years ago was true that more than 30% of the world’s tower crane supply was to be found in the UAE alone, the spindly spires of these cranes remain an ubiquitous sight in skylines around the region.

Another obvious choice for the region is the roughterrain crane. The terrain in the Middle East, with its deserts and rocks, is ideal territory for the RTC, and it’s no wonder that most manufacturers and dealers report the RTCs outselling the all-terrains in the region.

RTCs are expected to work long hours on job-

sites, whether civil construction, infrastructure, petrochemical plants or industrial. The nature of the RTC as a job-site work tool means that ownership or at least operation is typically concentrated with end users, Manitowoc’s David Semple, senior vice president for mobile cranes Middle East and Asia Pacific, told CMME in an earlier conversation. By comparison, while ownership of allterrain cranes is around 80-90% by rental companies, for rough-terrains ownership by end users is 40-50%.

“The trend is clearly going towards rentals, but due to the purpose of the crane – as a tool – many contractors will continue to own their fleet of RTCs, or at least keep a core fleet

they own, with rental supplementing their fleet during peaks,” explained Semple. Company ownership and the workhorse nature of rough terrains means they have to be a “simplier and sturdier product”, he says. “You need to be able to run these machines with very simple maintenance, and with very simple training for the operator and maintenance teams.”

Rise of the tower cranes Over in the tower crane business, “the GCC is actually one of the bright spots in the global tower crane sector”, says an executive from Abu Dhabi-based NFT Specialised in Tower Cranes, the biggest Potain dealer in the world.

regional market, he says, while Abu Dhabi seems to have suddenly lost appetite for big construction projects and consequently for tower cranes.

However, Dubai has enough work to keep everyone busy.

“We are really looking forward to the new developments and we’ve already started working there, having supplied cranes for projects related to the Expo 2020, where the Al Futtaim Group recently won a major construction contract and have three years to build the project,” NFT says.

Another tower crane specialist, Italian manufacturer Raimondi, is cautiously optimistic about the region. The brand is now owned

by Dubai-based KBW Investments,

giving it synergies within the KBW group to fall back on, which, technical director Domenico Ciano feels, has led to Raimondi’s recent success in the region that he would like to build on.

To do that, however, Raimondi first needs to deal with what Ciano thinks are some of the traditional aspects of the GCC market – lack of awareness, price-sensitivity and difficulty of access.

“For Raimondi, as a European manufacturer, you could say that a challenge is the lack of education about our quality versus that of other manufacturers. For the extremely price-conscious, more education on quality, durability, and real investment value is needed. If you think you’re saving money by opting for a ‘budget’ model with a vague manufacturing history, get in touch with Raimondi and we’re happy to tell you why our heavy lifting machinery is the better route.”

Going by Raimondi’s performance figures and forecasts, many customers also seem to agree with that ‘better route’. The Italians had significant success last year, delivering 35 cranes in the Middle East and rounding of the year, the forecast is for more sales.

Meanwhile, other crane categories are also doing reasonably well, especially all-terrain cranes, which are a staple of the oil & gas industry.

A recent spate of ATC orders in the region has come from lifting solutions and equipment suppliers.

The main beneficiary has been Terex Cranes, especially its popular Demag brand. Starting from late 2015 to date, more than 60 orders for Demag ATCs have been placed by companies in the region, with Kuwait’s Integrated Logistics, a well-known crane equipment supplier to the region’s oilfields, leading the way.

On the whole, the Middle East’s crane sector is weathering the economic storm well and is ramping up for an anticipated surge in business in the future.

fter a sharp shower, the temperature in Jilin, northeastern China, has dropped to zero degrees even in October, and it seems that winter is around the corner.

But Yu Fengjiang who has engaged in the crane business for many years, is apparently unconcerned at the chilly weather, because at this time, his business is in the prosperous period.

On the cusp of China’s National Day, Yu is busy leading his fleet of cranes to construction sites. This time, the project is a ceiling installation task at a gas station in Meihekou City. It is a piece of cake, he says. But for the construction party, this is the most complex part.

At 9am, the fleet arrives at the construction site, which has attracted a large number of passers-by. Six XCMG cranes working together will surely draw attention.

Among the cranes there is a QY50KA, and five other 25K series models. After studying the construction

site and communicating with the construction party, Yu quickly orders the cranes into place. Choosing a spot, extending the crane legs and hanging the slings, the preparation work is ready in a few minutes.

Under Yu’s unified command, the six cranes work together and soon finish the ceiling installation.

After work, when people are astonished at the efficiency, Yu says what matters is not his ability, but his experience. This kind of group hoisting work, especially for largescale installation construction, is very difficult, he says. The key is to choose the appropriate lifting points to ensure and maintain balance during lifting and adhere to the requirements of

cranes. Since the purchase of his first XCMG crane, he has been on the road to success, he adds. Over the years, XCMG’s K crane series has supported the rise of his business. And now that he is optimistic about his future business, Yu is considering whether his current equipment can meet his future needs. Although he likes the K crane series very much, XCMG’s G generation is also on his radar as he looks to keep pace with the times and expand his business with the new generation G series products.

And it’s not just in XCMG’s home base of China. Yu’s story is one that is repeating itself the world over for XCMG, whether in other parts of Asia, in North America, Africa,

Europe or even in the Middle East.

where the desert climate features scorching heat, dryness, strong wind and dust, the XCMG crawler crane took all the negative factors in its stride while repeatedly lifting 25t excavators in and out of a 60m deep cavity which was being excavated to construct a water storage pit.

It successfully accomplished all tasks and won praise from the client for its stable and reliable performance, becoming a bright spot in the construction blueprint for the 2022 World Cup venue.

ne of the most well-recognised global crane manufacturers, Terex Cranes has become a benchmark for quality and innovation in the industry. Enjoying an envied level of brand equity in the construction and lifting market of perhaps every country in the world, the company has become legendary for its products.

After all, it owns the Demag brand of mobile and crawler cranes, besides the Terex Cranes brand.

It’s not just market-leading products, however, that have garnered Terex Cranes its enviable worldwide reputation over the years. In fact, that reputation is built as much on after-sales service as on wowing customers with the right product mix.

In the Middle East, Terex Cranes carries forward its legacy of customer-centric back-up service from its regional base in Dubai, where its sales team is currently headed by Joerg Mueller, senior sales manager and team leader.

While Terex brought back the Demag brand for all-terrain and crawler cranes, rough-terrain, truck and tower cranes are available under the Terex brand.

When the Demag brand was re-introduced, many old and reactivated customers were very happy to hear that the brand with which they started their businesses was back, including customers in the Middle East. This has resulted in several orders for Demag from the region, with some of the most recent ones coming from Kuwait’s Integrated Logistics, which ordered

7 12 Demag all-terrain cranes earlier this year, and Bahrain-based Sarens NASS, which placed orders for 15 all-terrains. Also, in late 2016 and early this year, Integrated Logistics purchased of 31 more Terex cranes across its crawler, mobile and Demag lines. More recently, Kuwait-based JCT ordered five new Demag cranes, while Bothar Boring and Tunneling from Australia ordered Terex mobile cranes for its Mideast operations.

New models Behind these orders is Terex’s constant innovations and new model introductions. The manufacturer recently introduced the RT90 rough terrain crane to positive feedback from the market. A compact crane that offers a boom length of 47m, it has a 3m wide chassis and features the IC-1 control system, which is something new on Terex roughterrain cranes. Terex says the feature will be available in other models of the range in the near future under the DTI badge, which stands for Demag Tech Inside.

In the crawler crane sphere, Terex enjoys healthy demand, with crawlers still widely used in the Middle East for industries such

as oil & gas, infrastructure projects like bridges, power plants, and big stadiums and sporting venues. The main benefit of crawlers is that they can be mobilised rapidly, like the CC3800-1 Demag crawler, which is well known and respected in the Middle East’s heavy-lifting industry.

Among its recent innovations, Terex feels the IC-1 Plus crane control system is a great benefit for customers. The bigger SR 700L has a six-section, 44.5m boom and a 13.2m two-section jib. The 60t NK600 RX truck crane is mounted on a 12-wheel, four-axle truck. It’s four-section round-shaped super boom is 43m long and the twosection jib is 15m.

T

he Lebus spooling system has been well recognised across the lifting industry for many years as the best way to keep wire rope spooling smoothly on a winch drum in multiple layers. The special grooving pattern first developed more than 50 years ago by Frank LeBus has been refined over the years for quite remarkable applications.

One such application is aboard The Investigator, a research vessel belonging to Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific & Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO). It has six winches on deck, spooling rope of up to 8.4km in length, wrapped around the drum in 27 layers. Lebus International Engineers GmbH supplied the spooling system for this drum, with precision engineered grooving embedded in the drum face to ensure continuous perfect spooling.

Not all lifting equipment is as sophisticated as this, but wherever the wire rope – or synthetic rope sometimes, these days – that is spooled in multiple layers on a drum, Lebus helps smooth spooling. The benefit is not just reduced downtime; it has also been shown to increase the life of the rope by more than 500%.

Wire rope is a complex machine in its own right that often seems to have a mind of its own. Its behaviour can sometimes be hard to diagnose and faults hard to identify. This is where Lebus’ expertise comes into play.

Its engineers diagnose spooling problems and provide solutions. Often, there is a mismatch between the rope and the drum. Few people realise how important it is that these two elements are designed to match. The

longer the rope, and the more layers it is wrapped in, the more important this is.

If you bring in a new wire rope of a different construction, diameter or length, then your winch drum is unlikely to be a perfect fit any longer.

If you are lucky, it might be adequate, but the lifespan of the rope or the drum is likely to be compromised. Even with perfect spooling, the grooves on the drum face that control the behaviour of the rope will be gradually worn down eventually. Like the rope, the drum face is a wearing part.

However, it is not usually necessary to get a whole new winch or even a new drum. Winch drums can be refurbished to as good as new very simply. The grooving pattern on the face of a rope drum can be supplied on a pair of half shells, also called split sleeves.

When attached to the face of an old drum, they provide new guidance for rope spooling. You do not even have to send the winch back to the workshop for repairs. Sleeves can be bolted or welded into place in the field.
