The road To success Roads matter. Wherever you’re going, the road you take, both literally and figuratively, often decides how safely and soon you’ll get there – whether it is from your home in the suburbs to the airport or from just another market player to the position of market leader.

And when it comes to road construction machinery, the two roads – the literal one in your neighbourhood and the figurative one in the marketplace - seem to run parallel to each other.

Nowhere is this more evident than in the GCC region. Our part of the world has some of the best road infrastructure found anywhere on the globe, which is being constantly expanded and upgraded faster than almost anywhere else on the globe. Engaged in this process is some of the biggest and best road construction machinery in the world from the best known global brands.

If you take a vital stretch of road in any city in the region - such as Doha’s ring roads or Dubai’s highways – the importance of the stretch will be in direct proportion to the demand for the equipment brands and machines that helped to build it. The mantra is simple: a paver or a grader is as important as the roads it has built and its manufacturer as much in demand as the projects it has been involved with.

So when a Caterpillar asphalt paver, such as the AP655F featured in this issue, becomes one of the most popular in its class in the region, that popularity is built on a reputation acquired over the years through continuous faultless and quality service.

This is a paradigm that Case construction equipment has grasped fully.

The brand is seeking to reach the top of the region’s motor grader market piggybacking a ride on its tried, tested and praised 885B motor grader, which it brought to the region towards the end of last year, when it formed the star attraction at Case’s Eagle Days customer outreach event in November. The Italian-owned brand’s regional head discusses the machine’s capabilities and Case’s aspirations with it in our pages.

The regional logistics heavyweight’s order consists of two AC 130-5, four AC 160-5 and six AC 300-6 crane models and delivery of the new cranes is scheduled for later this year.

This recent order for the 12 new Demag cranes comes less than a year after Integrated Logistics took delivery of an order for more than 30 Demag and Terex cranes.

Terex added that the Kuwaiti company is also planning to enhance its fleet by repeating the same order of 12 more Demag cranes in the future.

Genie telehandler inducted into Omani force’s engineering division Powered access specialist Genie has supplied a GTH4018 telehandler to the Oman armed forces to support its infrastructure development work.

The Terex Group-owned company and its authorised distributor in Oman, Al Fairuz, delivered the machine to the Sultan of Oman’s Armed Forces Engineers (SAFE), the building and engineering division of the Sultan of Oman’s Armed Forces. The division is actively involved in the development of the country’s infrastructure, as well as in a wide range of military construction projects.

Bobcat debuts new quick coupler for E25 to E55 compact excavator models Doosan Bobcat EMEA has extended its excavator quick coupler offering with the launch of a new hydraulic pin grabber coupler for attachments used on the seven Bobcat compact excavators from the E25 up to the E55 models.

The new Bobcat Hydraulic Coupler is available both as a factory installed option and as an aftermarket product for use with all the pin-on fitting attachments for the E25 to E55 excavators.

Key features and benefits of the new quick coupler include its triple lock design for greater safety, exceeding the ISO 13031 norm and complying with all safety

A

new Terex AC 350/6 all-terrain crane is providing big business to Landwehr Construction, a heavy installation and construction firm in St. Cloud, Minnesota, USA. “The crane made us money,” says Chuck Paulson, crane manager for Landwehr, after completing back-to-back cooling tower installation and petro vessel removal projects for customers. “Had we not had a machine like the AC 350/6 crane, we could not have competitively bid the jobs.”

A little more than six months ago, Landwehr invested in the 350t crane capacity class in the form of the Terex AC 350/6 all-terrain crane. Since then, the crane has not often seen Landwehr’s yard.

Landwehr recently mobilised its new crane 72km from its headquarters to Melrose, Minnesota, for a cooling tower lifting project at a dairy processing facility.

Due to the tower’s weight, the facility’s wall height and how deep into the roof supporting materials had to be placed, the pick required 48m of luffing jib. “The crane can be equipped with up to 72m of luffing jib to increase machine flexibility,” mentions Ben Steege of RTL Equipment, the supporting Terex authorised distributor.

The crane’s full 116.7t counterweight package was required to lift the 13.6t cooling tower. Mobilising the crane, luffing jib and counterweight required a total of only seven truckloads. Within about an hour, the crane and truckloads arrived at the dairy facility. It took Landwehr’s fourperson rigging crew plus two operators just five hours to configure the crane with

maximum counterweight and luffing jib for the lift.

Including the tower unit, supporting structure pieces, catwalks and ladder, the crane made a total of 12 picks for the job.

By far, the most complex part of the lift was the 13.6t cooling tower. To clear the 7.6m factory wall while lifting the 3.7m by 7.3m by 3m unit, crews initially used 22.7m of main boom with the 48m of luffing jib positioned at 73 degrees. “At this configuration, the AC 350/6 crane offers a 16.4t capacity at a 46m radius,” says Steege.

Some of the structural steel had to be placed an additional 24.4m into the building’s roof. For this, the operator telescoped the main boom to 54.3m and changed the luffing jib’s angle to 65 degrees. “This gave us a 2.7t capacity when we were working at a 70m radius,” says Paulson. “The ability to change main boom length during the lift was the key to economically using this crane and winning the bid.”

Within eight hours, all the lifts were made. Afterwards, Landwehr’s crew had the crane derigged in about five hours and prepped to move for its next project.

It made another 72km trek to Little Falls to lift and remove a 27.2t vessel at an ethanol plant.

This time, Landwehr called upon the crane’s Superlift structure to boost main boom lift capacities. Using 95.7t of counterweight, the operator needed 54.2m of main boom to lift the 34.4m vessel. It worked at a 21.9m radius to manoeuvre the vessel into its final position.

“The Superlift boosts the crane’s capacity to 34.8t, which was more than enough to make this lift,” says Paulson.

With space being tight at the refinery, the crane’s size and close radius working capabilities proved to be of significant benefit. “At a mere 16.7m in length, the AC 350/6 is the most compact six-axle crane in its capacity class, and offers six different steering modes to easily manoeuvre into tight spots,” says Steege.

Paulson adds: “The ability to boom up and work in as little as an 8m radius in this configuration made removal of the vessel in tight quarters go smoothly.

By being able to quickly change from the luffing jib configuration to main boom with SL configuration, we were able to use the same crane to win bids for two different applications against multiple crane companies.”

hen you are one of the pioneers of a concept and have included it among your mainstays, it’s only a matter of when, rather than if, in moving that concept forward. So it is with Wacker Neuson and the WL20e — the first wheel loader with an electric drive.

The German compact equipment specialist presented the WL20e as a battery-powered wheel loader with a bucket capacity of 0.2 cubic metres and has since consistently developed it further.

The latest iteration that the company has come up with improves the very heart of machine by striking at the core of the technology that makes any piece of electric equipment tick – the battery.

The WL20e is now available with a high-quality AGM battery, which is characterised by particularly easy handling and low maintenance effort. The abbreviation AGM stands for “Absorbent Glass Mat”. With this type of battery, the electrolyte is bound in a fleece made of glass fibers, making it a leak-proof system. In addition to this aspect, the new technology offers additional benefits: it is less sensitive to temperature and develops little heat when charging and during operation, which results in an increased electric power output.

Another significant advantage of the new wheel loader generation is its “onboard” battery charger with 230 V, which was integrated into the machine. With this, the battery can be charged easily with a cable at any plug receptacle. This makes operating the WL20e wheel loader easier in everyday construction work.

Flexible interim charges have become more efficient due to higher power currents and an improved power draw. In addition, the battery is virtually maintenancefree and also capable of retro fitting. Customers who already have a WL20e electric wheel loader can convert to the AGM technology, for example if a battery replacement is due.

The performance parameters of the fully electrically driven WL20e wheel loader correspond to those of the diesel-powered model, and even exceed these in some aspects, such as the tipping load, which reaches up to 1.5t due to the weight of the battery. If the battery of the WL20e wheel loader is fully charged, a work application of up to five hours under full load is possible — enough time for typical applications, such as loading and transporting goods over short distances in a working day.

The operator can always see the battery’s charge status, as it is easily visible on the display. The modern battery technology and its emission-free drive system make the wheel loader well suited for applications in urban areas as well as indoors, such as in greenhouses, parking garages or for building restoration. The electric wheel loader has also proven itself in public facilities and hospitals, due to its very low noise emissions, and it also offers economic advantages with operating cost savings of around 40% over the course of the machine’s service life.

With a height of 2.25m and a width of just over 1m, low and narrow passages, and transport on a trailer are no problem for the Wacker Neuson WL20e wheel loader. While the operator’s protective canopy is too high to pass through very low clearance heights, Wacker Neuson has already been offering a fold-down operator’s canopy EPS (Easy Protection System) for some time, which is prepared for a low clearance height in just a few easy steps.

Even more convenient is EPS Plus, a hydraulically lowerable operator’s protective canopy, which operators can operate from their seat. EPS Plus solves the problem of low clearance heights and makes work much easier, especially if very low clearance heights have to be passed through repeatedly. EPS Plus saves a tremendous amount of time, as the machine operator does not have to exit the vehicle to lower the canopy.

he humble portable compressor or power source may not be the most conspicuous piece of equipment on a job site but it is second to none in sheer importance and versatility. Whether powering pneumatic equipment and power tools, or providing temporary electricity, it forms a vital part of any construction project. Without compressors or portable power devices, the jack hammers, pile drivers, pneumatic drills and breakers, sand blasters and riveting guns would all come to a grinding halt.

Several international manufacturers count the Middle East among their most important markets globally for portable power units, and are responding to the market’s demand for the latest and best products. One such manufacturer is Doosan Portable Power (DPP), part of the South Korea’s Doosan Infracore Construction Equipment, which has had a long and successful association with the region, with Its machines visible on many construction sites here.

Another manufacturer with a big interest in the region is Kaiser Kompressoren. The German company remains upbeat about its prospects in the region’s compressor segment despite what its regional director Carl Briden terms as not the best of times for the construction industry in the regional market.

“The market in the GCC region is more or less stagnant and going down in some countries due to continuing low oil prices. Some countries like the UAE and Qatar might offer better requirement patterns owing to the planned Expo 2020 and FIFA World Cup events.

The market is expected to behave in the same wavy fashion for the foreseeable future, without any peaks,” Briden says.

However, Kaeser has been able to carve a niche for itself despite

the adversities, he adds. “Overall, Kaeser’s performance has been good, with promising results in some GCC countries, though there are indicators the market is slowing down a little in others. On the whole it can be said that we have slightly improved our market share when compared to the past few years, with the aid of value added services.”

DPP, meanwhile, depends on one of the most comprehensive ranges of portable compressors in the Middle East to remain among the top brands in the region. The Korean giant’s offering includes models for construction, rental, utilities and manufacturing to quarrying, drilling and the oil and gas industry, with free air deliveries from 2.0 to 45 m3/min at output pressures from 100 to 350 psig (7 to 25 bar). As well as a wide selection of Tier 3 High Ambient models, the range also includes several Tier 1 or Tier 2 engined models, well suited to the fuel quality levels found in the region.

“All Doosan compressors are built to withstand the rigours of everyday applications in the toughest conditions,” Gaby Rhayem, regional director Middle East and North Africa, at Doosan Bobcat, told CMME in an earlier conversation.

The models sold by Kaesar in the region are from its MOBILAR range, which is suitable for the unique conditions in the Middle East.

The company’s best-selling models here are the M50, M70 and M100, and the reason for their popularity is that they cater for the most common applications within the construction sector, he adds.

Marvels of roadbuilding

Kuwait is maKing rapid progress on two large-scale elevated expressways that employ advanced bridge building methodologies in their design, planning and construction, maKing them two of the biggest multi-level road projects in the world

i

t is common knowledge in the world of construction and civil engineering that building or upgrading road infrastructure in the middle of already busy and congested urban environments is about the most challenging task that there is. The planning needs to be spot on, to start with, taking into account all the several factors of the environment in and around the job site. Then the execution needs to be faultless, despite the constraints of space, time, manouvrability, access and all other factors that affect busy urban areas. And then there is the safety aspect, ensuring which becomes exponentially difficult as the complication of the project mounts.

Kuwait has recently embarked on a spate of such challenging road projects, which seek to upgrade and add to existing road infrastructure in a busy central area of Kuwait City. The Jahra Road (RA166) and Jamal Abdul Nasser Street (RA/167) development projects are two strategic ventures put forward by the government of Kuwait as part of the state’s ongoing plans to further enhance the existing infrastructure and transportation network. The joint venture of Pace and Louis Berger has been employed to undertake the design and construction supervision of the projects.

The implementation in progress aims to transform the existing roads into internationally standardised multi-level expressways extending 10 to 11km across the western region of Kuwait. The scope of work also includes upgrading and reconstructing the existing service roads to provide additional traffic lanes with enhanced new, or relocated, utilities infrastructure.

The projects are interconnected within a network of newly developed highways including the Jaber Causeway and Doha link. This network will serve the city’s transport infrastructure and the highways are the main routes to reach the newly developed urbanising projects which are the Silk City project and Mubarak Al-Kabeer Seaport.

27 During planning, Pace/LB directed the implementation of the projects to take place over five phases of work each. Reasons for phasing included four main reasons. The first was to phase out traffic detours, which facilitated traffic flow in congested areas in and around the project. The second was to relocate services in phases, as per the technical specifications of the services to be relocated. The third was the necessity to complete Phases 1 of each of the two new roads at an early stage, while the last was the nature of segmental erection, which required commencing the works from one end of the project, then proceeding in a linear sequence.

Both projects, in their design, planning and construction, stand as two engineering marvels whose calibre can be measured by the advanced bridge building methodologies employed. The large-scale structural works make these giant projects two of the largest multi-level road projects in the world.

Attempting this outstanding upgrade for two of the most vital arteries in the busy metropolis of Kuwait City, Pace/LB employed very intricate and well-studied methods of construction that minimise any impediment or disruption of traffic flow, and do not perturb public environment dynamics.

Sophisticated equipment The undertaking of this grand infrastructure development entails a series of sophisticated large-scale operations. Its engineering and complexity of location required the use of the latest innovations in bridge constructions, involving the use of precast segmental erection with overhead launching gantries.

Pace/LB established two of the largest purpose-made high-tech precast facilities worldwide for these projects.

For the two elevated mainlines of the projects, five launching gantries were imported and assembled - three for RA/166 and two for Ra/167 - to mobilise the precast segments. Pace/LB erected the Jahra Mainline viaduct via balanced cantilever, whereas the segmental span-by-span erection method was introduced for the Jamal Abdul Nasser Mainline viaduct. The remaining entry/ exit ramps for both projects are being constructed mostly with various crawler and vehicle-mounted cranes via segmental balanced cantilever as well. The cranes used for this purpose are a mix of heavy duty rough terrain, all-terrain and crawler cranes, equipped with spreader beams in order to lift the segments and adjust them as needed.

The project work also entails the renovation of a number of utilities and drainage structures along the length of the project routes. This includes the relocation,

protection and refurbishment of water lines and sewage system, telephone services, gas lines and voltage cables.

Pace/LB set up two precast yards for the projects on a remote area of land in Doha district, with a total surface area of 280,000sqm. The yards are fully utilised with large-scale segment pre-cast technologies and machinery including mould production frames, heavy gantries, water tanks, storage and curing facilities, as well as staff offices and concrete batching plants.

The precast yards provided a greater space for segment fabrication works, along with a suitable environment where Pace/ LB could maintain quality of the segments’ fabrication with regards to consistency and strength requirements.

Other advantages included easy geometry control, an elevated speed of overall

implementation and high quality control, which guaranteed the construction of more durable bridges that should require very little maintenance, in addition to very limited or no public disturbance.

Closing the entire road for construction works was not an option. Pace/LB had to find, design and develop alternate traffic routes for road users to reach their daily destinations in collaboration with the traffic authorities.

Traffic detours, however long they extended, maintained the same properties of the original road including the number of traffic lanes, road width, services and all necessary road and detour signage and markings. Pace/ LB managed the construction of temporary detours in accordance with all international standards, comprising all the qualities of a well-developed road in terms of asphalt quality and safety.

Special equipment such as launching gantries found heavy use in the span-by-span construction method utilised in erecting the viaducts of the elevated project.

Every construction job on-site has to be strictly executed within all environmental standards and regulations formulated and developed periodically by the Environmental Public Authority. The projects require a certified specialist from Pace with the commission to raise a monthly report to the EPA on all environmental impacts caused by the project.

The report includes a monitoring log of occurrences around the project areas taken through field measurements during daily site visits. Determining air quality, noise levels, groundwater quality, water sanitation, solid waste and liquid waste confirms the implementation requirements under the contract. A mobile laboratory was set up across the construction sites for measuring emissions and toxic readings.

Emphasis on safety Safety is a huge aspect of the project. In order to minimise accidents and see to the safety of all personnel involved in the project, Pace/ LB put in place several safety applications.

Multiple mobile clinics were set up along the entire project line for the safety and health of workers. The joint venture team provided periodic lectures on safety and security for workers, which were delivered in about 10 languages due to multiple nationalities present in the workforce.

Contests were held to motivate the construction team and make them adopt the best safety practices. These contests selected the best candidate for adherence to safety norms and regulations after the health and safety instructions had been delivered and explained. The monthly event was called Safest Worker of the Month and, as the name suggests, picked the worker who followed the safety guidelines the best.

Firm and strict safety supervision was

ensured on-site, along with the application of international standards and safety regulations.

These included the use of helmets, jackets and other machine-associated safety gear, such as harnesses and belts. Attention was also duly paid on the proper set-up of banners, barriers and all signboards.

Constant on-the-job and separate training on safety was used to keep all workers updated on the best practices and what was required of them. These trainings included preliminary induction training on personal protective equipment, specific operations and toolbox training and even safety training for sub-contractors as well.

Going further with the training aspect and integrating it with their social responsibility agenda, Pace and LB constantly develop standardised training programmes for new engineers and university students which entail several educational lectures on the projects’ structural works, utility development works and project management. The students also receive exceedingly valuable engineering substance through supervised practical application and field work on construction sites, including the pre-cast yard.

Faster cycle times with case intelligent hydraulic system Case Construction Equipment has introduced the all-new CX245D SR minimum-swing radius excavator to its D Series line-up. Designed to provide increased digging and lifting power in confined work areas, the CX245D SR features a compact counterweight and modified boom placement that minimises the machine’s footprint, resulting in a highly productive and manoeuvrable excavator that’s ideal for restricted conditions, such as road and bridge work, residential projects and urban construction.

With an operating weight of 27.3t and a 160HP Tier 4 Final engine, the CX245D SR offers increased bucket digging forces (up to 15.6t) and lift capacity (up to 10.4t) compared to the previous model.

Case says its D Series models are built to provide significant operational gains, including decreased cycle times, improved responsiveness and multifunctional controls, and greater fuel efficiency. An electronically controlled hydraulic pump and larger control and solenoid valves increase lifting capacities and improve responsiveness.

D Series models offer more standard features than previous Case excavators, which, the company says, simplifying the buying process and makes them extremely versatile and operator friendly.

Faster cycle times are achieved through a new electronically controlled pump, a larger control valve and multiple sensors.

These features combine with the Case Intelligent Hydraulic System and its four integrated control systems to make the best use of the machine’s hydraulic power and momentum, resulting in added strength and fuel efficiency.

The four systems that make up the Case Intelligent Hydraulic System are: Boom Economy Control (BEC), which reduces RPMs by using gravity during boom down and swing; Auto Economy Control (AEC), which lowers RPMs during idle and automatically shuts down the engine after a pre-set idle time; Swing Relief Control (SWC), which reduces hydraulic power at the swing start; and Spool Stroke Control (SSC), which adjusts hydraulic pressure during digs.

Using improvements to the Spool Stroke Control system, the CX245D SR excavator re-uses hydraulic fluid whenever possible to automatically increase cycle times and efficiency. The operator experiences a more productive machine without losing the precision of the machine’s controls.

The Free Swing features improves craning, laying or lifting of offset loads; oil sample ports for quick sampling of engine and hydraulic oils; and easy pattern selector for operator preference of ISO or SAE controls.

Cummins has recently updated its lineup of midrange engines for the 2017 model year with several improvements.

Jeff Caldwell, executive director, says the company has improved its market-leading B6.7 engine by an average that exceeds the initial 7% target that the company set for itself.

He adds that the engine’s Efficiency Rating has jumped 8.5% and Performance Rating gone up by 5% over the EPA 2013 ISB6.7.

“Today’s 6.7 is the B Series’ most efficient engine to-date,” Caldwell adds.

For applications such as pickup and delivery, the Efficiency Ratings have shown a fuel economy improvement of up to 13%. Cummins also features a Stop-Start capability with the B6.7, which Caldwell says, improves fuel economy by a further three to 15%. The Stop-Start technology allows the engine to operate only when necessary by shutting it off during idle, reducing fuel consumption and increasing service life. The 2017 B6.7 includes a three-year, unlimitedmile warranty in truck applications Meanwhile, full production is underway on Cummins Westport’s ISB6.7 G and ISL G Near Zero engines. The ISL G’s NOx emissions are 90% lower than the 0.2g/bhp-hr 2010 EPA standard. Both engines run purely on compressed natural gas (CNG), liquefied natural gas (LNG) or renewable natural gas (RNG), and use Cummins’ proprietary spark-ignited stoichiometric combustion.

The new 210 radial lift model offers a base rated operating capacity (ROC) of 950kg, while the new 215 vertical lift model boasts an ROC of 975kg.

The operating capacity of both the 210 and 215 models can be increased by an additional 90kg, to 1.04t and 1.06t respectively, with an optional, dealerfitted “suitcase” counterweight kit.

JCB says that the impressive ROC of the 210 and 215 will allow operators to take full advantage of the high-flow auxiliary hydraulic circuit, delivering 136 litres per minute, to power a range of high-flow attachments

Additionally, the new 210 and 215 are the first in JCB’s small-frame skid steer line up to be powered by the JCB by Kohler 74hp engine, which offers a 20% increase in horsepower over comparably-sized skid steers in the JCB range, yet requires no diesel particulate filter (DPF). Both machines are Stage III B / Tier 4 Final compliant.

koBelCo revamps exCavator line-up Why get it? improved Fuel eFFiciency and increased digging Force across range Kobelco has recently introduced a variety of new excavators and updated its previous models.

The new introductions include compact excavators with improved fuel-efficiency and noise reduction, and conventional excavators with increased digging force.

The SK170LC-10 and the SK300LC-10 are two new conventional excavators unveiled by the company. The SK170LC-10 has a digging force of 12.02t, digging depth of 6.4m and a swing speed of 12rpm. It comes with a 127hp, Tier 4 Final Hino engine and three operating modes.

The new SK300LC-10 has a 252hp Tier 4 Final Hino engine and weighs 31t. It has a digging force of 17t and a new travel motor that increases traction by 10% The company has upgraded several other conventional models, including two Generation 10 models — SK210LC-10 and SK350LC-10. The former weighs 22.4t and is powered by a 160hp Hino engine. It has a digging force of 13.3t, with a 7% increase in work volume. Kobelco also claims a 10% increase in fuel economy over previous models when operating in S-mode and a

further 6% in eco-mode. It also comes with a higher boom foot cross-section, thicker arm-foot base plate and stronger foot bases.

The 270hp SK350LC-10 has a new hydraulic regeneration system that reuses force generated by the boom to aid the arm. It has been upgraded with 5% more digging volume than its predecessor and fuel economy has been improved by 18%. It has a digging force of 25.5t.

The upgrades include a thicker arm base plate, and a shape redesigned for added stability and durability, Kobelco says.

The company has also boosted the efficiency of the SK500LC-10 model, with an 11% increase in digging volume and a 10% increase in work volume. The 359hp machine weighs 51.7t and has a new hydraulic drive with improved cooling fan operation and less noise.

Kobelco has also rolled out an improved versions of its ED160-5 Blade Runner in its SR series of excavators. A combination of dozer and excavator, the ED160-5 weighs 16.4t and runs on a 95.5hp engine, with a digging force of 9.2t. It is designed for heavy dozing and its six-way power-tilt blade offers float, tilt, lift and angle options.

The oversized undercarriage and curved tracked pads offer better traction and higher floatation. It also has zero tail swing radius.

Husqvarna dC 200 drum Cutter Why get it? versatility, and low noise and viBrations levels Swedish manufacturer Husqvarna has introduced the DC 200 drum cutter, its new attachment for the DXR demolition robot product line.

The drum cutter is a versatile attachment made for jobs such as surface profiling of rock or concrete, trenching, excavating frozen soil, soft rock excavation in quarries, demolition and dredging.

The cutter has 56 tungsten carbidetipped picks on each side that rotate and chip away at the surface material to the desired depth or complete removal. When the material is not removed completely, the result is a smoother, more uniform surface, with smaller, finer grain sizes. This enables material to be removed more easily or used as back fill without additional crushing.

Low noise and vibration levels make the DC 200 suitable for use on restricted jobsites and sensitive urban areas.

In terms of control, the cutter is equipped with a unique software solution that improved efficiency and enables sufficient flow and pressure for maximum mobility The total width of the cutting head is 500mm while the diameter of the cutter drum is 240mm. The model’s maximum cutting force at 5,075 psi is 1.2t, while its maximum torque at 5,075 psi is 862kg.

Construction sites are not “clean”, by nature, but every attempt should be made to maintain the quality of the diesel fuel that enters the machine.

Always remember to replace the fuel cap and tighten it.

USe CleaN toolS To minimise contamination, keep the tools dedicated to plugging fuel lines and other gateways to the fuel system clean and dry. Do not use ad hoc items to temporarily plug leaks; that dirty wash cloth from your truck cab will only introduce impurities into the tank and engine when wrapped around a leaking fuel line.

Keep it filtered Change fuel filters at or before intervals determined by the manufacturer and use filter types and sizes approved for use by the manufacturer. y the time Case Construction Equipment finally showed off the 885B motor grader in the Middle East in November last year, the region had already been ripe territory for a while for the machine. When you’re a globally acclaimed manufacturer such as Case, and the piece of equipment is as widely known as the 885B grader, then your reputation precedes you.

In a well-connected construction sector that constantly shares knowledge across geographies, the sturdy machine’s reputation was not something that local contractors, fleet owners and operators in the region were not aware of. Its technological features and proven performance in markets with similar tough and demanding conditions like the Middle East, such as in South America, had already made it the obvious choice for Case when it came to entering the grader segment in the region.

Case first brought the 885B grader to the region at its Eagle Days customer outreach programme in Dubai towards the end of last year. Speaking about it, Franco Invernizzi, senior business director, Middle East and Africa, for CNH Industrial, the owners of the Case brand, tells CMME: “If we look at the other regions of the world then Case is very well rooted in road building equipment. In Europe and Latin America, we are the leaders in graders with the biggest market share. And we are also strong in dozers and compactors. When you can put together compactors, dozers and graders, you’re a big player in the road-building segment - and that’s what we are in most other regions in the world.

“We are in the process of introducing these same machines one by one in the Middle East to take up a similar position in the road building market in the region. We’ve started with the grader in the GCC and we’ll bring in our full range of dozers later in the future. Se we want to replicate in this region the position that we enjoy in other territories globally.”

And the Brazil-built 18t 885B is the model of choice as Case seeks to make inroads into the region’s road construction sector, says Zane Barnard, construction product specialist at CNH Industrial, Dubai. Analysing the market trends, Case felt that that the regional market was looking for a machine such as the 885B, which the company says fits into a capacity niche where there is demand. With motor graders being specialised equipment that need experience and expertise to use effectively, the model also provides controls that are relatively easy to operate and which most operators in the region will be able to make the most of in terms of getting the desired work results out of the machine, said the Case officials.

“Users in the region are also looking for solid reliability, which is what Case offers across our entire line-up. The 885B is a tried and tested machine that has already gathered a reputation for toughness and robustness,” adds Barnard. “There are also a plethora of new features, like automatic power transmission, a common rail engine and high engine power. It’s like a complete package of excellence for anyone looking for a grader.”

Speaking about the engine, the product specialist elaborates that the common-rail diesel engine offers 234hp and is built by Fiat Power Train or FPT Industrial, which is Case’s sister

concern in the CNH Industrial portfolio. FPT is a well-known name in engine technology and reliability, and Case feel that the backing of such an important and reputed engine supplier is a huge plus when it comes to convincing customers about the reliability and performance of the 885B’s engine.

“The engine is a very special one. It’s a VHP or variable horsepower engine, which adjusts the horsepower according to the application and the load that the machine is pulling,” explains Barnard. “So if you’re working in the first, second or third gears, where you need a lot of torque output, the engine will actually drop the horsepower and increase the torque.

“Conversely, if you want to travel faster, then the horsepower will increase and the torque will drop. It’s not just a normal common rail

engine; we have different horsepower curves mapped on to the controller and we can use that at any stage when the machine is in different applications.”

Attention to critical components The A-frame and moldboard are two other critical components that have been given special attention. “The A-frame has actually been strengthened for the Middle East model.

It’s larger and has more carrying capacity. The moldboard has been designed with three radii across the top. A multi-radius blade allows us to pick up material faster, which gets it rolling, causing less friction. This means we’re moving a larger load with less power and more ease.

“The whole design behind it is to put less stress on the machine, save time with faster operation and be more productive with less fuel,” says Barnard.

The transmission is a fully automatic one with a torque converter. It automatically selects one of the six forward speeds or three reverse ones, shifting down or up depending on the conditions the machine faces.

“There are two easy modes. You can either do it manually by using the control shifter or you can put it straight into auto, where the machine will actually select the ratios for you in different work applications.”

Case has paid special attention to the robustness of the 885F’s components, such as the circle teeth and moldboard, for greater reliability.

Coming to perhaps the most critical component of any grader – the circle teeth - Barnard points out another innovation: the 885B’s are large, externally driven ones.

“Being positioned on the outside rather than internally means there are no impacts directed onto the motor, which leads to less stress on components and therefore longer life. And then there is also ease of cleaning. So it’s designed for reliability and less wear and tear of the circle teeth,” he says.

The component is one of the most specialised pieces of equipment on the machine and is also expensive to replace.

“So a customer looking at a machine that he wants to keep for the typical 20 years that a grader lasts, doesn’t want to replace that item - and our design now allows us to reduce the wear rate behind it. So you should never have to replace it over the entire lifetime of the grader. The larger external design gives both longevity and performance in one stroke.”

Hydraulics is another area in which the 885B has been beefed up. Barnard says it’s a highly accurate hydraulic system when it comes to setting a level on the machine.

“We know how important hitting the exact grade is for a motor grader operator, and in order for him to do that, the hydraulic system has to be absolutely spot on - which it is on the

It will, for example, sense that there is 4t of blade pressure but only 2t of steering pressure and it won’t allow those two to conflict each other. This makes for greater fine-work control.”

The operator environment has also been optimised with a huge cab that has enhanced visibility through the use of full glass windows.

“An issue with graders is that when you’re sitting in the seat you can’t see the moldboard completely. But when you have to grade a stretch with only a 2cm tolerance, you need to see the whole moldboard. So with our cab being larger and full glass, the full moldboard is visible,” Barnard points out.

“It is also air-conditioned and tested to ambient temperatures of 60 degrees Celsius, so operators will be more than comfortable inside. The seat’s fully adjustable and in the UAE we have an air-ride seat option.”

Invernizzi adds: “We also have two cab options - a taller and a shorter one. This is because some operators like to stand up inside the cab while doing precision grading. So now we have a cab with a taller roof, where they can do so easily.”

Technical excellence aside, a machine is only as good as its back-up support. And this

is another area of excellence for Case. “The 885B will be fully backed up by Case’s spare parts and service in conjunction with our dealers. We are stocking up on all the necessary parts in our Jebel Ali parts facility,” Invernizzi says.

“The grader is one of the more complicated and specialised machines to operate and so we when we sell the 885B we can offer training to our customers’ operators as a package deal, which makes a huge difference. It’s like we are offering a sort of end-to-end service. We sell the machine, train the customer on how to make the best use of it and we support him with our service and spares back-up. This is of course Case’s usual concept of selling a package of services rather just the machine itself,” he adds.

“We are also training specialised grader technicians from our dealers to better support our customers and provide them peace of mind that they’re getting the adequate level of support that Case is known for.

“We plan to demo the 885B to some of our biggest customers in the region. More machines are coming in from Brazil and will be at our Jebel Ali, Dubai, facility for immediate delivery. We are confident of this machine’s prospects in the region,” Invernizzi signs off.

s any driver in the GCC region can testify, this is a region with roads of well laid-out, high-quality, smooth and high speed tarmac, conducive to fast and comfortable transport. And working behind the scenes to make such roads possible is some of the best paving machinery in the world – Caterpillar’s AP655F paver, for example, which is among the most popular pavers in the region.

And with road construction going on apace in the region, Al-Bahar, Caterpillar’s dealer in the region, is buoyed by the demand in the segment.

“The continuous requirement for asphalt roads maintains the steady demand for asphalt pavers in the region. Mega road and infrastructure projects in the region will definitely contribute to the industry and the segment,” says Mamoun T Mutair, product manager, Building Construction & Paving at Al-Bahar.

Intuitive, accessible technology and a quick-heating screed system, which increases production while reducing crew idle time, are key features of the Caterpillar AP655F asphalt paver, which is also equipped with the exclusive Caterpillar Mobil-Trac Undercarriage.

Specialised screed platforms are available for the paver in vibratory only, or vibratory and tamper bars: the SE50 V, SE50 VT and SE60 V. Engine performance is aided by the 173hp Cat C4.4 ACERT engine. A fuel-saving Ecomode is standard on the paver models. When used with automatic engine speed control, Eco-mode efficiently manages engine speed to optimise fuel economy, reduce sound levels and keep the machine running smoothly. The control automatically adjusts RPM when the engine reaches a high load threshold or needs additional cooling.

“The exclusive Eco-Mode and Automatic Engine Speed Control reduce fuel consumption and lower sound levels for better comfort and communication. Such advanced technological features for economy and comfort are among the main reasons behind the demand for this paver,” says Mutair.

An integrated generator, the power behind the new screed heating system, is another fuelsaving enhancement. Exclusive to Caterpillar, the generator used on the American giant’s F-Series pavers was developed by the same team that designed and engineered the highly innovative Cat D7E electric-drive dozer. The integrated generator is directly connected to the paver engine, and operates as a core part of the machine. The refined heat distribution of the SE50 and SE60 combine with the generator to bring the screed to the proper temperature in approximately 15 minutes, compared with the 30 to 45 minutes required in most other

contemporary models as well as the AP655F’s predecessors.

The paver runs at about 1,300 RPM while heating, compared with the more common 2,200 RPM of some competitive machines.

The lower paver engine RPM requirement reduces sound levels and can enable earlier paving start times in residential areas.

Loaded with tech Touchscreen displays provide increased flexibility for operating and adjusting the machine. The colour displays offer high visibility and more user-friendly options.

Controls for new technology features are accessed through the touchscreen. The most frequently used functions are still controlled by switches.

The new single-switch auto-fill feeder system simplifies setup and helps provide consistency for operators of varied experience and skill levels.

The screed-heating system diagnostics enable uninterrupted paving in the event a screed temperature sensor fails. The system automatically compensates, allowing consistent, uninterrupted paving.

The operator console features enhanced functionality with controls that are simple and flexible. Crews who prefer limited options have an organised, efficient control system at their fingertips — and mostly in the

same locations as on earlier models. Those who want to utilise more functions can do so by accessing various menus through the touchscreens. Exclusive propel and feeder system settings transfer between stations with the touch of a single switch. Speed, as well as operation and travel modes, are automatically adjusted.

Elaborating further about the user-friendly features that make the Cat AP655F paver suitable and attractive to operators and owners in the region, he adds: “The model has dual operator stations, where propel and feeder system settings can be transferred between stations with a single switch. This

Mobil-Trac Undercarriage The AP655F includes innovative features on undercarriage options. Fully-bogied support rollers maintain contact with the surface regardless of irregularities. The oscillating bogies minimise deviations and tow-point movement, leading to smoother mats.

“A steel track undercarriage with exclusive triple bogie system limits tow-point movement for excellent paving results,” adds Mutair.

The Mobil-Trac System (MTS) features oscillating bogies and a friction-driven belt, and is available with treaded or smooth tracks. MTS enables travel speeds that match the pace of wheeled pavers. The system essentially combines the traction of track pavers with the speed and mobility of wheeled pavers. Enhanced manoeuvrability is another key benefit.

The SE50 V, SE50 VT and SE60 V screeds deliver excellent ride and mat qualities, while providing versatility in urban areas. The SE50 V and SE60 V are the vibratory options, while the SE50 VT provides vibration and tamper bars. The SE50 V offers a maximum paving range of 6.5m, the SE50 VT is 8m, and the SE60 V is 7.65m.
