Honolulu just moved one step closer to seeing the completion of a rail system that’s been under construction since 2009 and in talks for decades. The Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART) recently awarded the contract for a third section of the Honolulu Rail Project, part of an elevated rail system expected to be fully operational in 2024. “We announced the award of a contract to build 5.2 miles of guideway and four stations that go with those 5.2 miles,” said Bill Brennen, spokesman for HART. “Shimmick Construction, Traylor Bros. Inc. and Granite Construction formed a joint venture and made a proposal and was awarded the contract for $874.8 million. This section runs from the Aloha Stadium passed the Pearl Harbor Naval Base through the Honolulu Airport and ends up at the Middle Street Transit Center Station.” The rail project will cover 20 mi. (32 km) over an elevated guideway with 21 stations. All are along the south shore of Oahu where about 70 percent of the population and 80 percent of the jobs are within a half mile to a mile of the alignment, Brennen said. The total cost

Auctioneers Incorporated, industrial auctioneers and equipment distributor and IronPlanet, an online marketplace for used heavy equipment and other durable asset sales, jointly announced that they have entered into an agreement under which Ritchie Bros. will acquire IronPlanet for approximately $758.5 million, subject to customary closing adjustments. Founded in 1999, IronPlanet complements Ritchie Bros.’ primarily end-user customer base, as it focuses largely on the
needs of corporate accounts, equipment manufacturers, dealers and government entities in equipment disposition solutions. It conducts its sales primarily through online-only platforms, with weekly online auctions and in other equipment marketplaces. IronPlanet, a private company based in the United States, sold approximately $787 million of gross merchandise value (GMV) through its sales channels during 2015, and has achieved a 25.2 percent comsee RITCHIE page 61
Infrastructure Issues Bridge Partisan Divide With 90 days left before Election Day, a national poll released Aug. 9 by the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) found that half of registered voters say the nation’s infrastructure has gotten worse over the last five years, and a majority of voters said roads and bridges are in “extreme” need of repair.
The findings were part of a new national poll commissioned by AEM to gauge voter perceptions and attitudes about the current and future state of U.S. infrastructure amid a high-profile election. The poll found that registered voters, regardless of political affiliation, recognize the declining state of the see INFRASTRUCTURE page 22

• 10% MORE BUCKET BREAKOUT • OPERATOR CONTROLLED UNTIMED POWER BOOST: STRENGTH ON YOUR SCHEDULE We know what it’s like to sit in the operator’s seat when you hit solid rock. The power boost button on most excavators can deliver the extra force you need to break through – but only in short bursts. We knew there had to be a better way, so we took our jobsite experience and collaborated with our engineers. The result is an untimed power boost that comes standard in all KOBELCO conventional excavators from the SK210LC to the SK500LC. It provides all the extra muscle you need continuously so you can power through the toughest jobs without interruption.

True Power At Liebherr, we don’t just build machines. We custom-engineer them to perform as efficiently as possible. Our new PR 736 dozer is a perfect example. Its Tier 4F emissions system was designed from the ground up and it’s practically maintenance free. The hydrostatic drive system automatically adjusts to keep operators in the “sweet spot” — even when saving fuel in ECO mode. And like all our machines, the PR 736 is built to last with exclusive Liebherr components.

AP&T Receives $3M USDA Grant for Tok Wind Project Alaska Power & Telephone announced that it was selected by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to receive $3 million in grant funds through the High Energy Cost Grant Program to construct a 1.8 megawatt wind farm in interiorAlaska. The 7-Mile Wind project will be a 1.8 mW Wind farm, located in a Class-4 wind area adjacent the Glenn Highway, near the community of Tok, Alaska. The 7-Mile Wind project will assist the communities of Tok, Tetlin, Dot Lake and Tanacross by providing a locally-available source of cleaner, more affordable renewable energy. At present, these four communities have been 100 percent dependent upon diesel-based generation of electricity and experience energy costs, which in recent years have been higher than $0.50 per kilowatt hour. Approximately 1,500 residents live within the communities which will benefit from the 7-Mile Wind project. 7-Mile Wind is anticipated to produce over 3.7 million kilowatt hours of home-sourced
renewable energy per year. For perspective, the U.S. EIA reports that the average U.S. household consumes 911 kWh per month. The project is estimated to offset over a quarter million gallons of diesel fuel per year. Annual carbon savings are more than 73,470 tons (66,650 t). The total cost of the project is estimated at $10 million. AP&T will be working to complete the project’s financing plan in the coming months, anticipating that remaining construction dollars will be predominantly comprised of private investment and loan funds. AP&T has a target of completing the project by the end of 2018, although the project’s timeline is dependent upon weather and other factors. Alaska Power & Telephone President and CEO Robert Grimm remarked, “AP&T is excited for this opportunity to partner with USDA to help provide our customers in the Tok region with more affordable, ‘home-sourced’ energy. 7-Mile wind will also help stabilize

energy pricing by reducing our customer’s exposure to pricing volatility and cost-escalation associated with diesel fuel.” The 7-Mile Wind project is one effort in a multi-technology approach to converting its rural service areas from diesel-based generation to other sources of energy. The company also is working to develop the 1.5 MW Yerrick Creek hydropower project near Tanacross. “As a utility, AP&T has a longterm commitment to the communities we serve; this gives us a longterm, big picture approach to infra-
structure planning,” Grimm said. “AP&T’s vision for Tok is to leverage a variety of technologies, which will include the 7-Mile Wind project, as well as the Yerrick Creek hydropower project. We believe development of both of these projects will help improve the economics of subsequent transmission interconnections to other nearby communities such as Northway and Mentasta. Meanwhile, AP&T is conducting tests to understand the benefits of fuels of opportunity, to help diversify fuel supply in the region.” Jason Custer, business develop-
ment director said, “We are thankful to USDA, as well as Sens. Murkowski and Sullivan, and Congressman Don Young, for their longstanding support of the High Energy Cost Grant program. Alaska is far behind the rest of North America in terms of access to renewables, transmission interconnections, and energy costs; the HECG is a vital tool for helping Alaskans catch-up to the rest of the U.S., and come closer to socioeconomic parity.” Alaska Power & Telephone Company is an experienced renewable energy developer which currently owns and operates seven small hydropower projects in rural Alaska, as well as the largest utility-owned solar installation in the state. The company is in the process of constructing two additional hydropower projects — the Hiilangaay project on Prince of Wales Island and Yerrick Creek. he has three. He winced as a crew from Controlled Demolition Inc. brought down the silo. “A job well done, because it had to be done, but sad,” Ludlow said. “We’re going too far too fast. A more structured phase-out would be better for the country,” he said. “This is hurting lots of people.” Gov. John Hickenlooper said coal “is losing to natural gas” because gas has emerged as cheaper to produce and cleaner as a source of electricity. “[Coal mines] are losing that cost battle. And we don’t see any indication natural gas prices are going to go up,” Hickenlooper said in a recent interview. Miners who are losing jobs must be retrained, he said, pointing to better internet connections as essential for boosting rural economies. “We have an obligation, just like when somebody loses their job to technology, and we should be thinking about how we retrain people in rural areas to have new careers,” he said. “What do those look like? The key to all of this is broadband. Ultimately, if we’re going to retrain people for the jobs of

the future, it is almost always going to come down to some connection with broadband. It is a priority.” Yes, faster internet connections will help, Delta county officials said. Yet the prospect of retraining by watching videos on laptops does not appeal to coal miners accustomed to solid work with certain high pay. “They are doers,” innovative and nimble, an Oxbow executive explained. Offering better broadband as a fix for lost mining “is throwing a bone to a dying dog,” Ludlow said. “The anger here doesn’t manifest itself as violence. It manifests as a sadness. People end up cutting back,” he said. “You want
better for your family than what you had. And if you’re the provider for your family and you cannot provide, it has an impact. This is difficult.” Nobody sees new jobs, green jobs or any jobs comparable to mining in salary and benefits. Many are gripped with nostalgia. By her lifelong home in Somerset, Colo., Myrna Ungaro, 60, waiting for the silo explosion, remembered how she and other sons and daughters of Italian immigrant miners played on the mountainside — above Bill Koch’s Oxbow mine, rocks they called their “palace.” Her grandfather and father worked in mines. Back then, six mines
thrummed along a snaking road by the river. Ungaro always wanted to join men — like Sanchez and Amendariz — blasting away underground, she said. She went repeatedly to mine offices asking to be hired. But fathers didn’t want their daughters to be miners and ensured such efforts led nowhere. Now Ungaro said she can’t find work near home. She’d have to drive nearly 80 mi. (129 km) to Aspen or another resort. “That’s where the money is, over the mountains,” she said. “They have all the money. That’s the way it is.” She gazed at the silo. “I’m upset. I’ve been crying all night. You live long enough, you will see everything. I’m going to cry again. Oh, my goodness. The wind. The president. Coal. No more coal mines.” As the silo fell, she could see the mountainside more clearly. Soon, Oxbow must hire a contractor to restore that mountainside to a natural condition. “Now it goes back,” she said with a sigh. “It’ll be like it was back before.” For more information, visit http://www.denverpost.com/. $1.4B Project Eases Congestion on SR-91 By By Chuck Harvey CEG CORRESPONDENT
Work is ongoing on a $1.4 billion project to widen State Route 91 from the Riverside County line in Corona to Pierce Street just past Interstate 15 interchange in Riverside. The stretch of freeway from Anaheim to Riverside ranks as among the nation’s worst commutes because of heavy traffic. Also, SR-91 is approaching 50 years old and the traffic demands now placed on it far exceed its original design from the early 1960s. Headed by the Riverside Transportation Commission, the project will add one regular lane and two express toll lanes in each direction, including the building of 11 new bridges, widening of 21 existing bridges, improving six interchanges, building 95 retaining walls and erecting 287,000 sq. ft. (26,663 sq m) of sound walls. “The construction cost for the bridges is between $160 million and $175 million,” said Eliza Echevarria

LAFC Breaks Ground on New $350M Stadium Imad Bolotok photo
Magic Johnson (L) and Will Ferrell pitch in at the groundbreaking ceremony.
The Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) together with supporters, city and county leaders and representatives from Major League Soccer, broke ground on its new 22,000-seat soccer-specific venue named Banc of California Stadium on Aug. 23. The Club also announced a strategic partnership with Banc of California, highlighting a partnership that shows the community focus of both organizations. The locally based lender is one of the largest and fastest-growing banks in Southern California and does much of its lending to Los Angeles’ diverse families, entrepreneurs and business owners. Arena will bring more than $350 million in private investment to South Los Angeles. This includes a district that will be active on nongame days, 365-days of the year, that will feature a large public plaza, restaurants, retail store and a conference and events center, serving as a sports, entertainment, civic, and cultural landmark for Los Angeles. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti joined hundreds of supporters and LAFC leadership, including co-owners, NBA and Los Angeles legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson; actor and comedian Will Ferrell; inspirational life coach and entrepreneur Tony Robbins; entertainment and sports legend Peter Guber; business leader and LAFC lead managing owner Larry Berg; co-managing owners Bennett Rosenthal and Brandon Beck; and LAFC president Tom Penn, in celebrating the landmark occasion. Designed by LA-based architectural firm Gensler, the stadium will maximize both fan and player experiences, incorporating elements and best practices from entertainment and sports venues from around the world. “We start here,” said Larry Berg, LAFC lead managing owner. “After years of planning and hard work we are set to make history here in the heart of the city. “Banc of California Stadium will allow for greater sports-viewing and live entertainment experiences to take place in Los Angeles than ever before,” he said. “This world-class stadium will be a state of the art venue featuring ‘state of the heart’ experiences for players, fans and artists,” said Guber. Banc of California Stadium is being constructed in a place rich in Los Angeles sports history — on the site of the former Los Angeles Sports Arena and just steps from the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. “Los Angeles is the sports and entertainment capital of the world, and today we open a new chapter in our rich history with the world’s most popular game,” said Garcetti. “The construction of this new stadium in Exposition Park will create thousands of good-paying jobs — and when their new home is built,
our team will bring soccer fans from everywhere into the heart of our city.” “It has always been important for me to invest in projects that create and support jobs in communities that are often overlooked, especially here in Los Angeles. The shovels in the ground today mean real dollars are now flowing into this community, benefitting thousands of people,” said “Magic” Johnson. “The new Banc of California Stadium will bring [more than] $350 million in private investments in South Los Angeles. The construction that begins today will lead to the creation of thousands of jobs.” Imad Bolotok photo

Banc of California Stadium will host a variety of community and cultural events, but has been designed with the soccer fan in mind. The 22,000-seat facility will offer an intimate game-day experience for fans. The stadium is scheduled to be complete in time for the 2018 MLS season. “We welcome LAFC and what promises to be a wonderful new stadium here in Exposition Park,” said supervisor Mark RidleyThomas. “This exciting venture represents a tremendous investment in South Los Angeles, that will boost our local economy and provide hundreds of good paying jobs to people living right here in this community.”
“This spectacular stadium will provide LAFC and its fans with a world-class home,” said MLS commissioner Don Garber, “and I look forward to the many rivalry matches between LAFC and the L.A. Galaxy that will be played here for years to come.” “Home of the Olympics, some of L.A.’s most beloved sports teams, and finest football moments of all-time, Expo Park is a place where sports history is made,” said Councilman Curren D. Price Jr. “Today, we begin a new chapter with the LAFC. For my constituents, this rubble we see today is more than a world-class stadium. struct foundations to support the bridges. Pile driving will typically be done on between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. on weekdays, and pile driving activities will be listed in weekly construction alerts. Along with pile driving, current construction includes drainage and wet utility installations, retaining wall installation, bridge construction, concrete and asphalt paving, city street improvements and infrastructure installation for toll operations. The majority of road widening work to date has been on SR-91 between SR-71 and Smith Avenue and on the I-15 between Temescal Wash and Ontario Avenue. Heavy equipment needed to build and widen bridges includes excavators, drilling equipment, forklifts, cranes and bridge deck paving machines. “The majority of the bridges on the project are the same general type,” Perez said. “There are a few bridges on the project that are precast concrete girder–type bridges. There have been as many as 20 bridges being built simultaneously.”
Building Material Usage Substantial Workers will apply 210,000 cu. yds. (160,556.5 cu ) of paving, add 90,000 linear ft. (27.4 m) of new drainage and relocate 92 full utility systems. Crews also will use large amounts of steel beams and lumber for the false work and formwork. Concrete and rebar will be used in the bridge structure. Project Funding, Contracting Funding for the project is provided by a combination of federal, state and local sources as well as toll revenue bonds. The express lanes will be fully funded by tolls from drivers who choose to use the lanes. Toll revenue will be used to repay the federal loan. The project is divided into 10 segments along SR-91 and south on Interstate 15. The segments make it easier to report what work is currently taking place. The Riverside County Transportation Commission purchased about 200 full or partial properties for project right-of-way

The design-build approach was selected to save time in widening the much-used freeway. Between three and four years can be saved by having the same firm handle design and construction. “The joint venture was formed specifically for this project and is based at the project location in Corona, Calif.,” Perez said. She added that the majority of the bridge construction is being done by the designbuilder. “They do have specialty subcontractors for specific elements of the bridge construction, primarily for the shoring, foundations piles and post tensioning,” Perez said. The project has about 35 subcontractors including All American Asphalt of San Fernando, Calif., for asphalt paving; Drill Tech Drilling and Shoring of Antioch, Calif., for foundation drilling and shoring; Tipco Engineering of Bellflower, Calif., for driven

Landscaping: Part of Project A Project Aesthetics and Landscaping Master Plan (PALM) has been developed for the project that incorporates Corona’s citrus industry heritage. It pays tribute to Corona’s former title as lemon capital of the world. Design elements included a stand-alone art piece featuring a lemon and citrus blossom. It will be seen on walls and bridges throughout the project limits. Walls will be constructed of split-face masonry block. Positive Impact The project is expected to provide $220 million annually in direct spending to Riverside County. Analysts expect $545 million in indirect income for the county. Also, the SR-91 widening project is expected to create 16,200 new jobs including 4,600 related to project construction. In addition, commuters making a roundtrip on SR-91 will save about 12 minutes a day because of the added regular lanes and 78 minutes a day when using the new express toll lanes. About 280,000 vehicles travel the section of freeway each day. Construction Impacts on Local Area “A project of this size cannot be built without affecting the local community,” Perez said. In an effort to reduce the impact to commuters, lane reductions and ramp closures are conducted during nighttime and early morning hours. Several long-term closures of ramps are in place, including the westbound Main Street off-ramp, the eastbound Main Street onramp and the eastbound Serfas Club Drive onramp. Detours are in place to direct motorists to alternate ramps as needed and drivers will face periodic closures and detours, including night lane closures. The noise from equipment and pile driving will be loud at times. Demolition operations also will be noisy. Local streets will have to be realigned. Utilities will have to be relocated.
Project Challenges A recent “91 Steer-Clear” weekend full closure of the freeway segment presented a significant challenge to the project. It required informing and diverting motorists from the area, consolidating major work efforts by the design-builder and coordinating of multiple jurisdictions and emergency responders. On another issue, workers have demolished and rebuilt a Corona, Calif., bridge that partially collapsed and injured nine workers in October. The 91 Freeway bridge spans E. Grand Boulevard. According to reports, the workers were lowering an on-ramp bridge into place when the jacking operation failed. That caused the bridge deck to drop about 16 in. (40.6 cm) and hit the wooden support beams. The beams then hit the workers. The cause of the accident is under investigation by Cal OSHA, Caltrans and KCE Structural of Washington D.C. “The Riverside County Transportation Commission is awaiting the results of the report,” Perez said. Atkinson Walsh Construction Joint Venture decided to remove and rebuild the bridge to ensure the structure’s long-term durability. During reconstruction, high-profile vehicles were not able to travel under the bridge. Atkinson Walsh reportedly paid for the new bridge. Girders Go Up on Tuolumne Street Air Pumped Sand Bridge in Fresno Ahead of Schedule & Gravel Is Now ‘Air Pump USA’ BuildHSR.com photo
Air Pump USA, a construction and landscape industry service provider that places aggregates, sands and soil blends into hard-to-reach places, has announced the launch of its new brand, website and centralized location. Formerly known as Air Pumped Sand & Gravel, the name change, new brand identity, and recent relocation of its headquarters from Mission Viejo to Gardena, Calif., reflects the company’s desire to better serve the growing Southern California construction market and prepare for growth into other regions of the country.
Construction crews placed the first of 42 massive steel and concrete girders on the new Tuolumne Street Bridge in downtown Fresno.
Construction crews placed the first of 42 massive steel and concrete girders on the new Tuolumne Street Bridge in downtown Fresno. The placement of these girders signifies the midway point of the construction for the bridge. In total, the California High-Speed Rail Authority’s Construction Package 1 (CP 1) design-build contractor TutorPerini/Zachry/Parsons (TPZP) will place seven girders (also called beams) per day until complete. The girders placed are 149-ft. (45.4 m) long and weigh approximately 83 tons (75.3 t). On Jan. 4, 2016, construction crews began the demolition of the one-way bridge that previously had clearance for Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR). Construction of the new, higher bridge will accommodate UPRR, as well as the high-speed rail line and create twoway traffic patterns on Tuolumne Street between E and P streets. Construction of the Tuolumne Street Bridge is part of the first 32-mi. (51.5 km) stretch of the high-speed rail project between Avenue 19 in Madera County to East American Avenue in Fresno County. Air Pump USA developed its initial sand and gravel pumping technology in 1996. The system, a truck-mounted assembly that pneumatically moves aggregates through flexible hoses upwards of 500-linear-ft. (152.4 m), is designed to save time and reduce the need for manual labor, freeing up the work force. Air Pump USA provides a safer and cost-saving alternative to conventional crane and bucket systems, power buggies or wheelbarrows, according to the manufacturer. “We are excited to launch the new Air Pump USA brand and gain additional exposure from some of the largest and most sophisticated contracting companies who recognize the value of our service,” said Michael Nolen, the company’s president. “With construction in this region booming, we are experiencing record demand for our systems in various applications, including multi-family housing, podium deck planters, annular space fills and green roofs.” The company is currently developing its eighth generation Air Pump design, and is preparing to offer its equipment to qualified licensees throughout North America. In 2015, Nolen and a management team acquired the company from original owner Richard Dunlop. Now celebrating its 20th anniversary, Air Pump USA takes an innovative and progressive approach to improving the Air Pump technologies for safety and efficiency. Suicide Barrier’s High Price Could Delay Installation SAN FRANCISCO (AP) A suicide barrier expected to be installed on the Golden Gate Bridge later this year may be delayed due to high costs. KNTV-Television reported the project was estimated to cost $76 million but the two companies that entered bids say the job would cost between $142 million and $174 million. Bridge District spokeswoman Priya David Clemens said engineering staff will take a few weeks to go line item by line item on the bids. She said that if engineers can’t find any cost savings, district officials will likely have to delay construction until more funds can be allocated. More than 1,400 people have jumped to their deaths since the bridge opened in 1937. Most jumpers suffer a grisly death, with massive internal injuries, broken bones and skull fractures. Some die from internal bleeding. Others drown. The Bridge District two years ago approved a plan to fund 20-ft.-wide metal suicide prevention nets. Komatsu CARE Certified Equipment Gives Customers Peace of Mind Komatsu CARE Certified is a comprehensive certification program for customers seeking used equipment in the marketplace. Komatsu CARE Certified units have been previously maintained under Komatsu CARE Complimentary Maintenance for the first three years or 2,000 hours with genuine Komatsu parts and fluids. Beyond the complimentary period, Komatsu promotes Extended CARE to be completed at every recommended service interval. Along with all completed services, Komatsu CARE Certified is limited to Tier IV machines less than six years old and with less than 6,000 hours. The machines go through a certification process that involves a thorough evaluation by a Komatsu trained distributor technician and any necessary repairs are completed. These machines may come from distributor rental fleets, lease returns or any other source of used equipment. John Arapidis, vice president, rental and used equipment, said one of the benefits of choosing Komatsu CARE Certified Equipment is peace of mind. “Customers can be assured that the machine has been well maintained by their Komatsu distributors’ technicians, with records to back it up,” said Arapidis. “These machines are also outstanding in look and appearance.” Customers also appreciate the special financing, warranty options, parts incentives and ongoing service support they receive. Registered Voters Feel Government Should Do More to Improve Infrastructure nation’s infrastructure as an issue that should be addressed and believe that the federal government should do more to improve infrastructure across the board. “Americans across the political spectrum understand the dire state of U.S. infrastructure and believe that the federal government should do more to improve our infrastructure,” said Dennis Slater, president of AEM. “Voters recognized that increased federal funding for assets such as roads, bridges and inland waterways will have a positive impact on the economy, and they are looking to the federal government to repair and modernize.” The national poll identified a number of key findings, including: • Nearly half (46 percent) of registered voters believe that the state of the nation’s infrastructure has gotten worse in the last five years. • A significant majority (80 to 90 percent) of registered voters say that roads, bridges and energy grids are in

some or extreme need of repairs. • Half (49 percent) of the surveyed population feel that the federal government is primarily responsible for funding repairs to the nation’s infrastructure. • Seven out of every 10 registered voters say increasing federal funding for infrastructure will have a positive impact on the economy. • More than eight out of every ten Americans consider water infrastructure (86 percent), solar powered homes (83 percent) and smart infrastructure (82 percent) as the top three important innovations for the future of infrastructure. • Voters across the political spectrum think that the federal government should do more to improve the nation’s overall infrastructure, with 68 percent of Republicans, 70 percent of Independents and 76 percent of Democrats sharing this sentiment. Registered voters also feel that government across the board should be doing more to improve the nation’s
overall infrastructure, with 76 percent of individuals surveyed wanting more from state governments, 72 percent looking to the federal government to do more and 70 percent expecting more from local governments. “Both presidential nominees have voiced their strong support for infrastructure investment,” said Ron De Feo, CEO of Kennametal and chairman of AEM’s Infrastructure Vision 2050 initiative. “The specific ideas and proposals they offer over the next 90 days will be critically important, and voters should consider them carefully on Election Day.” The national poll was conducted as part of AEM’s ongoing efforts to develop a long-term national vision for U.S. infrastructure. Vermeer Drill Offers 36 Percent More Horsepower Vermeer has introduced the compact D10x15 S3 Navigator horizontal directional drill (HDD) for the utility installation market. The D10x15 S3 is designed to provide more power and carriage speed, and lower sound levels than its D9x13 S3 Navigator HDD predecessor, according to the manufacturer. “Market feedback indicated that utility contractors who are operating compact-size drills are demanding more performance,” said Tod Michael, product manager at Vermeer. “We listened and responded by optimizing the horsepower, thrust, rotation and carriage speed of the new D10x15 S3 to help utility contractors install more feet per day.” The D10x15 S3 features a 60 hp (44.7 kW) Deutz TD2.9 Tier IV Final engine — a 36 percent power boost compared to its D9x13 S3 predecessor. Vermeer also increased the thrust/pullback to 10,000 pounds (44.5 kN), the maximum torque to 1,500 ft. lbs. (2,033.7 Nm), and the maximum

spindle speed to 220 rpm. Speed, sound and simplicity are trademarks of the entire Vermeer S3 drill lineup. With those goals in mind, Vermeer increased the max-
imum carriage speed to 208 fpm (63.4 mpm), and reduced operating noise. The drill’s reduced sound levels help reduce noise and disturbance on residential job sites,
and enables easier communication among the crew members. The combination of the drill’s reduced sound levels and compact size, and the drill rod’s tight bend
radius, makes it well-suited for short “curb-to-home” fiber and service work. These shots are typically less than 300 ft. (91.4 m) and 4 in. (10.2 cm) in diameter. “Measuring just 12.5 feet long, the D10x15 S3 has one of the smallest footprints in its class,” said Michael. “When a crew is working in a residential area with limited space, they may have to set up in the street. The compact design of the D10x15 S3 helps minimize traffic disruptions in a neighborhood.” Like other models in the Vermeer S3 product line, the D10x15 S3 has an optional DigiTrak Aurora interactive, fullcolor touch-screen display. The Aurora screen delivers real-time, easy-to-view location information, and can be used in conjunction with the Vermeer Productivity Tools. For more information, visit www.vermeer.com. Ditch Witch’s New Backreamers Improve Productivity Ditch Witch has released a new line of backreamers to help underground construction operators improve productivity in specialized soil conditions and installations. The new models include the Sandhog HD (heavy duty), Swab and EZ backreamers. All models are designed with customer input in mind, job site efficiency and long life, according to the manufacturer. “When it comes to productivity in complex soil conditions, backreamers are key to a successful horizontal directional drilling [HDD] job,” said Jeff Davis, Ditch Witch product manager of HDD tooling and drill pipe. “We know the ability to pre-clean a path or quickly connect to a rig is often required. That’s why the latest models build on the Ditch Witch reputation for rugged, long-lasting design and are tailored to specialized soil conditions, improving an operator’s ability to efficiently install product.”
Sandhog HD Backreamer Designed for sandy and soft soils, the triple-action Sandhog HD backreamer combines aggressive cutting, mixing and packing for more efficient pullback on the job. Bore paths in
unstable soil conditions can often collapse or fill with material in the ground. This backreamer uses a barrelshaped body to better sculpt a true-to-size bore path. Carbide cutting teeth and spiral plates further improve pullback efficiency and lower torque while maximizing the capacity for
fluid flow. The crushed carbide provides longer life to the reamer and replaceable, hardened steel nozzles increase fluid flow flexibility. The Sandhog HD backreamer is available in 2 3/4-in. (7 cm) shaft size with 2.0 IF threads and 3 1/4-in. (8.2 cm) shaft with 2 3/8 API threads, ranging in diameter from 8 to 18 in. (20 to 45.7 cm). Compatible Ditch Witch HDD rigs include the JT9, JT20, JT25 and JT30. Swab Backreamer The Swab backreamer is specifically designed for rocky and hard soils, and enables direct pullback for Ditch Witch All Terrain HDD rigs. Material left in a bore can damage product when deployed in restricted spaces. This model effectively pre-cleans the bore path by efficiently utilizing fluid flow and the carbide hard surface. Material removal also helps install product without enlarging the path beyond the pilot size. By eliminating the need for an expanded path, the backreamer
saves on fluids and time. The Swab backreamer is available in a 3 1/4-in. shaft with a 2.77 male thread size, and for a diameter of 5 1/2-in. (14 cm). The model is compatible with the JT30 All Terrain HDD. EZ Backreamer For small-diameter installation jobs, the EZ backreamer combines ease of use with effectiveness. It was designed for direct connection to the EZ connect assembly, allowing operators to quickly change out tooling in a fast, safe and efficient manner. The model is equipped for use in soft to mediumhard soil conditions. The EZ backreamer is available in a 3 1/4in. shaft size with an EZ2 and EZ3 connection, ranging in diameter from 6 to 8 in. (15.2 to 20 cm). Compatible Ditch Witch HDD rigs include the JT20, JT25 and JT30. For more information, visit http://www.ditchwitch.com/partsservice/digging-systems/backreamers. PDI Converts Overhead Power Lines to Underground By Allison McNeal SPECIAL TO CEG
Millions of miles of overhead utilities are strung across the United States, but the reliability of overhead utility lines as well as increasing maintenance and operating costs have led more municipalities, particularly in urban areas, to convert their overhead distribution lines to underground. According to the Edison Electric Institute, almost 70 percent of the nation’s electric distribution system is built with overhead power lines; however, in the last 15 years, approximately half the capital expenditures by U.S. investorowned utilities have been for underground wires. In addition, there are many communities, such as the city of Mesa, Ariz., that are converting overhead utilities to underground to improve the aesthetics of their neighborhoods and roadways. Going Underground Last summer, a local utility company hired PDI Construction — a division of Paramount Designs Inc. based out of Phoenix, Ariz. — to remove the existing 12 kilovolt (kV) overhead lines and bury approximately 5,000 linear ft. (1,524 m) of new 12 kV power lines as part of an aesthetics project. PDI Construction is a full-service dry utility company that has extensive experience working in a variety of underground construction services. The company specializes in both horizontal directional drilling (HDD) and open-cut excavating/trenching. However, project manager Noel May chose the open-cut trenching method for this particular project. May knew he needed a machine that would complete the project in an efficient manner, so he selected a DX140LCR-3 reduced-tail-swing crawler excavator, which PDI Construction previously purchased from the local Doosan equipment dealer — Ditch Witch of Arizona. “Instead of using a tractor loader backhoe to install the conduit and cables, we used a DX140LCR-3 because of its reduced machine width, 19-foot dig depth and added
maneuverability, helping our operators work in tight quarters,” May said. “We needed a machine that could safely turn 360 degrees and load material into a haul truck without interfering with oncoming traffic in adjacent lanes.” The tail-swing radius on the DX140LCR-3 is just 5 ft. (1.5 m), with a tail swing overhang of 9 in. (23 cm) over the side of the machine, which made it ideal for working in front of Dobson High School, which is a heavily congested area along West Guadalupe Road. In addition, May’s operators needed a machine with good front and side visibility, as well as to efficiently see behind the machine when trenching. The machine’s selectable power and work modes also were beneficial, allowing operators to gain maximum efficiency and fuel economy at the job site. PDI selected a DX140LCR-3 reduced-tail-swing crawler excavator for the project, which PDI Construction previously purchased from the local Doosan equipment dealer — Ditch Witch of Arizona.

Right-Size Attachments Some excavator operators gravitate toward using a standard size bucket for applications, but this may negatively impact productivity. During the project, the DX140LCR-3 was paired with a 30- or 48-in. (76 or 122 cm) heavyduty bucket to easily dig through a variety of soil conditions like clay and hardpan. May added teeth to
the buckets to deflect the amount of bucket wear, helping the crew get more work done. In addition, the excavator was equipped with an optional quick coupler, which helped expand PDI Construction’s attachment versatility on the job site. “The quick coupler made it easier and faster for our operators to change buckets without exiting the cab,” May said.
Open-Cut Trenching For the overhead-to-underground project, deciding between horizontal directional drilling and the open-cut trenching method primarily depended on the job site and soil conditions. At times, horizontal directional drilling can be the only option available to best navigate the underground congestion of cables, lines and pipes, according to May. However, for this particular project the open-cut trenching method was the best suited for the job. PDI Construction officials worked with local authorities to identify underground utilities before the Doosan excavator started digging. To make sure no utility lines were hit using the open-cut trenching method, the crew paralleled within 4 ft. (1.2 m) of water and gas lines and would check crossings every 20 to 50 ft. (6 to 15 m). Building a Duct Bank After excavating the trench, the crew built a duct bank to help protect and consolidate the cables. Most duct banks use a protective concrete casing that surrounds the PVC conduits. For this project, the
electrical cables were bundled together in a 2.5-in. (6.4 cm) and 3in. (7.6 cm) PVC conduit using guide wires inside the bank. PVC allows for easier repairs on existing duct banks and require minimal digging. After the conduits were bundled, they were surrounded with an encasement, which is designed to prevent damage from water or physical stress. “We put a clevis — a U-shaped or forked metal connector that can be fastened by a bolt or pin — on our DX140LCR-3 and placed the 200-foot conduit duct bank into the trench,” May said. Once the conduit duct bank was installed, the DX140LCR-3 was used to backfill the trench. According to May, the project went smoothly and was completed in only a few months mainly due to the DX140LCR-3 excavator’s power and performance on the job site. The History of Trenchers, Trench Shoring Technology Trenchless Technology photo

Patent drawing of James B. Hill’s “Traction Ditching Machine.”
Trenches have been used for decades in a number of applications, including construction. Before WWII, trenches were often dug by hand. Rudimentary trenchers were used as the early as the late 1800s, but the machines were cumbersome with a large number of parts such as drive shafts and gearboxes. The earliest trencher was The Buckeye No. 88, developed by James B. Hill, and soon other companies such as Cleveland Trencher Co., the Parsons Co. and the Barber-Greene Co. all had their own versions of a trencher. Technological advancements in hydraulic machinery in the 1950s made trenchers more user friendly, along with drive trains and hydraulic motors and rams. The machines also increased in size throughout the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s, as large projects such as pipeline construction surged across the United States. However, one manufacturer, Charles Machine Works, which would later become Ditch Witch, went in the opposite direction. The company’s founder Edwin Malzahn created a compact trencher, which the operator controlled from behind the machine. The Model DW also was known as the “end-

less conveyor ditch digging machine.” As the technology to create a trench advanced, companies also were developing ways to shore trenches. Trenches dug by hand had limited stand up time, which is the amount of time the trench is maintained before it caves in. One particular American company set out to increase the safety and stand up time of trenches. In 1970, T.A. Forsberg founded Efficiency Production Inc. as the first company in the nation to commercially produce and market an engineered trench shielding system, according to the company. Ken Forsberg, current president of the company said that because his father was raised during the Great Depression on a farm, he understood the value of a dollar but more importantly, he understood the need to control utility installation costs while at the same time increasing daily productivity. Last Riviera Casino Tumbles Down on Las Vegas Strip LAS VEGAS (AP) The last tower of the iconic Riviera Hotel and Casino came tumbling down along the Las Vegas Strip on Aug. 16 to make way for a convention center expansion. The 2:30 a.m. demolition of the Monte Carlo wing came two months after the taller Monaco tower was leveled the same way. The 2,075-room property closed in May 2015 after 60 years hosting headliners from Liberace to Dean Martin. It also was a backdrop for movies including the Rat Pack original “Ocean’s 11” in 1960. The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority owns the property and is spending $42 million to level the 13-building site. The tourism agency plans to use the site to expand the Las Vegas Convention Center. The tourism agency bought the entire 26 acres for $182.5 million, plus $8.5 million in related transaction costs. The expansion is expected to be complete in January. Unlike the previous implosion in June,
there was no designated viewing area. But a small crowd began gathering on Las Vegas Boulevard to witness the implosion, many of them snapping photos before blasts caused the building to collapse into a pile of rubble. “This is like history right here,” Dan Teson told the Las Vegas Sun as he pointed to the 17-story Monte Carlo tower and other remaining buildings. “It’s got weird architecture compared to everything else on the Strip.” Once known as a classic mob joint, “The Riv” was used in three of the most famous movies ever filmed in Las Vegas, including “Ocean’s 11,” the 1971 James Bond film “Diamonds Are Forever” and 1995’s “Casino.” It’s also a setting for scenes in the latest “Jason Bourne” film. of the project is expected to be between $7 to $8 billion with $1.55 billion provided by the Federal Transit Administration. Two sections, each of about 5 mi. (8 km), were let in 2009 and 2011. Today, about 8.5 mi. (13.7 km) of those 10 mi. (16 km) of guideway have been completed. “About five miles of track is fastened to that guideway,” Brennen said. “That’s the elevated bridge the trains will run on. What we do is build columns first to provide the elevation. Then they lay the guideway and then the track. Even before all that, we have to move all the utilities underground. That’s been the big challenge. When you open up the ground you never

know what you are going to get. You can get drawings from people who built before and they will tell you this waterline is there and electrical conduit is there, and then it’s not there. Or perhaps the cable company came in and put something on top that wasn’t recorded. “In this latest contract, we had to let a separate contract for advanced utility relocation work so it’s done before the contractor who gets the contract to build the guideway and stations gets started. That is still going on.” While there was some private property acquisition, most of the work is taking place in the median of government owned roads, he said. In some cases, contractors have to close highway lanes for their own safety and that of the public. While it’s lead to some traffic congestion, Brennen said HART

as been putting extensive information on the lane closures and offering the public information about what detours are available. Often, the work calls for delays rather than closures or they close the lanes late at night, especially as it relates to the use of heavy equipment. “There are big drills,” Brennen said. “Some of the work is what they refer to as balance cantilever work. They work with big yellow travelers that start from two ends and build toward the middle. There are a couple of stretches where the guideway goes over the freeway. That requires the travelers that help lay those segments in the manner I described. Each segment of guideway weighs 50 tons. It’s made in the precast yard and trucked to guideway. The crane picks them up and hoists it up to the guideway where it is put in place.
We try to do some of that work at night when there is less traffic and have to close the appropriate amount of lanes. It has been very safe. “We have to drill to pour the concrete that forms the foundation for the columns. You’ll see 30-foot columns that provide the support from ground to under the guideway. We’ve drilled 110 to 200 feet to pour the foundation for some of the columns.” The first four train cars were delivered in March, and in addition to the guideway and stations, the project will also require the construction of a rail operations yard where the trains will be housed. At its peak, the project is expected to create 4,000 construction jobs, plus an additional 10,000 jobs indirectly related in other industries. The project is being see HART page 46

HART Expects Elevated Rail System Will Ease Congestion, Bring Jobs HART from page 42
funded in part by a half of a one percent surcharge on top of the general excise tax (GET). “When you purchase something you pay what most people consider a sales tax,” Brennen said. “It’s 4 percent statewide and 4.5 percent in Honolulu on the island of Oahu. Because tourism is the number one industry in the state and on Oahu, tourists pay that same GET tax we all pay. When they go buy sunscreen and sunglasses and ugly shirts, they pay a portion. Twenty to 30 percent of the GET is paid for by tourists. We feel they are helping to pay for this system. The direct investment of federal and local funds will boost the economy and increase demand for goods and services at local businesses, while increasing tax revenues for the city and state. Transit oriented development around rail stations will sustain the demand for jobs in a variety of industries for many years in the future.” The initial section of the rail transit system, from Kapolei to Aloha Stadium, is slated to open in 2018. The entire system, from Kapolei to Ala Moana Center, was originally set to be fully operational in late 2021, but that date has since been moved back to 2024. When operational, the trains will run from 4 a.m. until midnight with about 17 of the four-car trains operational at peak travel times. The rail project is expected to eliminate an estimated 40,000 car trips, easing congestion on streets and highways. Atlas Copco’s Dynapac F800W Paver Features High Visibility Atlas Copco’s Dynapac F800W wheeled paver offers operators high maneuverability and mat quality as well as optimal visibility. The wheeled undercarriage and dual, swingout operator platforms make it easy and safe to take on a variety of paving applications, including highways, city streets and parking lots. The F800W’s center chain box auger drive ensures optimal material flow in demanding paving conditions and the unit has a paving capacity of up to 1,000 tons (907 t) of asphalt per hour and offers a range of paving widths — from 8 to 19 ft. (2.4 to 5.8 m). The paver also includes a flexible Dynapac feed control system and a large screed for increased productivity and optimal mat quality. The F800W completes Atlas Copco’s line of highway-class asphalt pavers for the North American market. The F800W is less than 21 ft. (6.4 m) long and can complete turns within a 5-ft. (1.5 m) radius, allowing operators to maneuver around many structures and tight corners. Its balanced center of gravity and high-floatation, sand-ribbed tires ensure a smooth ride, according to the manufacturer. A two-speed hydraulic motor, combined with a heavy-duty torque hub, provides ample tractive force for paving and allows the paver to reach speeds as fast as 11 mph for quick transportation between job sites. Atlas Copco also offers front-wheel, traction-assist, and 6-by-4-wheel drive as part of the standard package for the United States An optional 6-by-6-wheel drive further increases traction. The operator has optimal visibility of the paving surface with the paver’s dual, swing-out operator platforms. The platforms pivot out from each side to give the operator a clear view of the worksite, eliminating fatigue from prolonged leaning that can occur when an operator strains to get a clear view from a stationary seat. Additionally, the paver has a deck height of about 6 feet (1.8 m) — which further contributes to high visibility. Atlas Copco grouped the control and operational switches according to purpose and frequency of use, which allows the operator to quickly adjust paving settings and
respond instantly to varying conditions. This helps the operator focus on the paving process and look out for nearby workers, increasing productivity and safety. Smart controls automatically lock the screed, halting leveling, feed and vibration when the paver comes to a stop, further increasing operator confidence. Additionally, both operator consoles carry multifunction electronic displays for an accurate readout of paving parameters. The F800W features Atlas Copco’s Dynapac feed control system, which eliminates material segregation and ensures optimal material flow. The system uses four ultrasonic sensors that measure material feed
that measures less than 6 in. (15 cm) wide, along with the Dynapac material management kit. All of these features eliminate material segregation and provide superior mat quality. Smart features, including a quick-fill, clean and manual variable speed control modes, keep the feed system versatile. The Dynapac F800W features a heavyduty material hopper that can hold as much as 13.5 tons (12 t) of asphalt — matching the capacity of the largest material hoppers available in this class — allowing the F800W to tackle varying job requirements, according to the manufacturer. Chamfered corners allow for easy cleaning at the end Atlas Copco’s F800W wheeled paver completes of paving operation. its line of highway-class asphalt pavers in the Optional hydraulically North American market. It enhances productivity through high maneuverability with the wheeled undercarriage and optimal visibility from the dual, swing-out operator platforms.
and automatically adjust the paver’s conveyors and center drive augers to optimize material flow. The system minimizes segregation and delivers a constant head of material and the smooth flow needed to produce a quality mat. The paver features an independently controlled dual-bar feed conveyor system with 17-in. (43 cm) diameter auger flights. It also includes a thin center chain box auger drive
operated aprons prevent spillage at the front of the hopper and provide quick dumping of residual asphalt back into the conveyor. Atlas Copco’s optional safe-impact pushroller system eliminate marks on the finished asphalt mat from material feed trucks bumping in to the paver. Atlas Copco equipped the F800W with the Carlson EZIV08-15 vibratory front extension screed. The screed is highly
responsive for varying-width applications and also provides optimal stability. The paver’s load-sensing hydraulic system consumes little power and quickly responds to varying widths and slope changes. Screed controls are fitted with simplified toggle switches that are accessible even with gloved hands. A 34-kilowatt, hydraulically driven oversized generator heats the full width of the screed at all times to eliminate material from sticking. It maintains a 60-hertz frequency control regardless of the engine load or speed. This allows users ample reserve power to seamlessly connect lighting accessories and wide-width packages. The wheeled paver’s six-cylinder, 173-hp Cummins QSB 6.7 Tier IV final engine provides ample power for a wide variety of jobsite conditions. The large engine reduces strain on internal components and increases longevity, while the ECO mode setting further reduces fuel consumption. An efficient cross-flow cooling system with a hydraulically driven, variable-speed fan significantly reduces noise. The Dynapac F800W features the same hydraulic and drive components found on Atlas Copco’s larger 10-ft. (3 m) paver range, ensuring parts commonality. The oversized components generate less heat and wear as well as increase component life. Atlas Copco designed the Dynapac F800W paver for maximum uptime by simplifying servicing. The hydraulic system allows uninterrupted paving operation with ample circuits and manual overrides. Quick disconnect fittings and centrally located filters reduce service downtime because they are easy to access and replace when needed. A multifunction display on both operator consoles shows any engine- and paver-related fault codes so operators and technicians can diagnose and choose corrective actions. Firm Becomes Gateway for Unique European Machine A unique and highly versatile type of equipment popular in Europe has made its way to New England — and in time, with the help of a New England equipment dealer, it will be available throughout the United States. The Mecalac all-terrain HIGH SPEED skid excavator, which has changed how contractors move material and excavate in Europe, will now be exclusively available from Lorusso Heavy Equipment, located in Walpole, Mass. “We are thrilled to announce that we were able to negotiate a deal with Mecalac to not only be a dealer for their product, but also to be able to take this one step further and help set up their distribution in the United States,” said AJ Lorusso, president of Lorusso Heavy Equipment. The Mecalac MCR series combines the features of a skid steer loader, a compact excavator, a telehandler and integrates them with a unique, versatile boom. “We’d been following the development of these machines for a number of years,” said Lorusso. “In 2013, at a visit to bauma in Germany, I was finally able to see these machines in action.” The Mecalac all-terrain skid excavator can mount a skid steer bucket, perform all of the functions of a skid steer/track loader and lift and load materials to a pile or truck as high as 16 ft. (5 m), due to Mecalac’s versatile boom with integrated high reach offset. The boom folds to 131 degrees, offering maximum stability and lifting performance. The MCR can fully rotate while carrying a load up to 40 percent of its own weight. It also adapts well to unstable surfaces, can work on platforms in loader mode and gives the operator a 360-degree view of the surroundings. Mecalac’s Active Lock quickcoupling system allows the operator to switch out to attachment for digging, ditching, skid buckets, forks, handling plates and more, in seconds. Auxiliary hydraulics permit the use of standard hydraulic attachments, including hammers, augers, cutters and more. All models have an over terrain speed in excess of 6 mph (9.7 km). The process of changing from excavator mode to skid steer mode is as simple as turning a switch
inside the cab. Mecalac offers three models of its skid excavator: • 6MCR — 12,600 lbs. (5,715 kg) 75 hp (55.4 kW) • 8MCR — 15,900 lbs. (7,212 kg) 75 hp (55.4 kW) • 10MCR — 20,700 lbs. (9,389 kg) 75 hp (55.4 kW) Showing Off New Line On July 16 in Walpole, Lorusso Heavy Equipment hosted a demo day, open to the public, to debut the Mecalac MCR series. The demonstrations proved successful — the dealership already has sold its entire first shipment of 6MCR and 8MCR machines and are currently taking orders for a second shipment, due to arrive in late August. Bob DiPoli, owner of R.A. DiPoli Co., with locations in Medfield, Mass., and Moultonborough, N.H., does small excavation projects. DiPoli, who attended the demo day, was impressed with the Mecalac line. “I have been in this industry for over 30 years, and I have never seen a more versatile machine, ever,” he said. “I think this is going to be a game changer for contractors.” D’Arcy Cleveland, owner of D’Arcy Cleveland & Sons Excavation, Pawcatuck, Conn., has been following the Mecalac MCR on YouTube for the past few years. Cleveland had a chance to operate the machine at Lorusso’s event. “I like it. It is very smooth and stable, and I think I should buy one,” said Cleveland, whose business involves septic system installation, site work, driveway and utility work. “This machine could truly replace [my] excavator and skidsteer and consolidate them down to the one Mecalac machine.” Ben Holmes, owner of Rye Beach Landscaping in Exeter, N.H., also found the Mecalac machine online and has been anxiously waiting for them to make their introduction to the U.S. market. After his test drive of the machine, he said, “I think it was incredible. The concept of having one machine operating as an excavator, skid-steer and telehandler will allow me to save time on the job sites. The ease of operation was surprising. The cab was very com-
fortable … just one day in the seat and an operator could get the hang of it — it wasn’t nearly as complicated as I thought it would be.” About Mecalac S.A. The company manufactures a wide range of compact construction equipment designed for urbanrailway and utility construction sites. Mecalac has manufacturing facilities in France, Germany and Turkey and has earned numerous patents, design- and innovation awards in France. About Lorusso Heavy Equipment Located in Walpole, Mass., Lorusso Heavy Equipment (LHE) serves the Massachusetts and Rhode Island markets and beyond. In addition to Mecalac, LHE carries Liebherr construction equipment and was recently named one of the top five dealerships in the United States by Hyundai Construction Equipment. Established in 2009, Lorusso Heavy equipment prides itself on being a family-owned and operated business, committed to serving its customers with efficient, personalized attention. For more information, call 508/660-7600 or visit http://www.mecalac.com/en/ and http://www.lorussoheavyequipment.com and www.facebook.com/lhellc. (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s website at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.) CEG
The reach on the skid steer extends to 16 ft. (5 m) high, allowing the machine to easily move material into the back of a dump truck.
This compact excavator that doubles as a skid steer has a 24 ft. (7.3 m) reach, making it one of the most versatile machines available.
D’Arcy Cleveland (L), owner of D’Arcy Cleveland & Sons Excavation, Pawcatuck, Conn., and Ben Holmes, owner of Rye Beach Landscaping, Exeter, N.H., attended Lorusso Heavy Equipment’s demo day. Both had the opportunity to test the MCR skid excavator in person after seeing demonstrations online.
Bob DiPoli, owner of R.A. DiPoli Co. with locations in Medfield, Mass., and Moultonborough, N.H., was impressed with the machine’s versatility.

Ritchie Bros. Acquires IronPlanet in $758.5M Deal RITCHIE from page 1
pounded growth rate in assets sold from 2013 through 2015. This growth momentum has continued, with a 41 percent increase in GMV during the first half of 2016 relative to the same period in 2015. “This transformative transaction is the logical next step for Ritchie Bros., building on our multi-channel platform, global reach and long-standing customer relationships. Together with IronPlanet, we will create a combined company of trusted brands with the ability to provide customers around the world with a greater number of choices and platforms to sell, buy and list equipment when, where and how they want — whether onsite or online. Our commitment to diversifying our offerings is directly in line with customer demand for multiple selling and buying solutions,” said Ravi Saligram, chief executive officer of Ritchie Bros. “This acquisition will help accelerate our growth in revenue and earnings and add shareholder value by continuing to expand our capabilities in new channels, sectors, regions and customer segments. Ritchie Bros. and IronPlanet both have talented teams and winning cultures built on a passion for serving customers,” Ravi said. “This is an exciting day for IronPlanet, our customers, employees and shareholders. IronPlanet joining forces with Ritchie Bros. will allow the combined company to deliver a multi-channel marketplace that will provide a full range of equipment asset management and disposition solutions. IronPlanet has built a leading online marketplace and technology platform across a number of verticals, and when combined with Ritchie Bros.’ strength in live onsite auctions, will prove to be a powerful combination in driving value for our customers,” said Gregory J. Owens, chairman and chief executive officer of IronPlanet. Ritchie Bros., Caterpillar Form Alliance Ritchie Bros. also announced that it has entered into a long-term strategic alliance with Caterpillar. Ritchie Bros. will become Caterpillar’s preferred global partner for live onsite and online auctions under the agreement, which will take effect upon completion of the IronPlanet acquisition. Under the terms of the agreement, Ritchie Bros. will become Caterpillar’s preferred global partner for live onsite and online auctions with respect to used Caterpillar equipment, and will complement Caterpillar’s existing dealer channels. Ritchie Bros. will provide Caterpillar and its dealers with access to proprietary auction platforms, software and other value-added services, thereby enhancing the exchange of
information and services between customers, dealers and suppliers. The strategic alliance is also expected to strengthen Ritchie Bros.’ relationship with Caterpillar’s independent dealers around the world by providing them enhanced and continued access to a global auction marketplace to sell their used equipment. “Ritchie Bros. is proud to enter into this historic alliance, which will strengthen our relationship with Caterpillar, its dealers and end users, as well as help expand our global reach and footprint,” said Saligram. “Our marketing capabilities, unrivaled suite of technology and powerful multi-channel transactional platforms will add tremendous value and make us a trusted strategic partner to the Caterpillar family.” “A key element of our digital strategy is connecting more products in our customers’ fleets, allowing us to help improve their productivity, increase safety and drive sustainability. This alliance will ensure that more used equipment buyers have access to our best-in-class products, digital offerings and world class customer support through the Cat dealer network,” said Rob Charter, group president with responsibility for Caterpillar’s customer and dealer support. “Ritchie Bros. and Caterpillar are beginning an exciting new chapter in our relationship to better serve our global customers,” Charter said. The strategic alliance between Ritchie Bros. and Caterpillar will have an initial five-year term. After completing the acquisition of IronPlanet, Ritchie Bros. will operate live onsite auctions at participating Caterpillar dealers’ locations under the Cat Auction Services brand and also encompass Ritchie Bros.’ other onsite and online brands. Strategic, Financial Rationale According to the companies, this is an ideal and complementary fit to expand Ritchie Bros.’ strategy to create a more diversified, multi-channel company with greater scale that can provide even more choice to customers. Equipment sellers frequently choose to sell their assets across multiple sales solutions. The transaction will bring together Ritchie Bros.’ strength in live, onsite and integrated online auctions with IronPlanet’s leading position as an online marketplace, creating a broader multi-format equipment sales and asset management platform, with solutions including: • Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers live onsite and online simulcast auctions • IronPlanet online-only auctions, including a reserved daily marketplace and buynow formats • Cat Auction Services live onsite and online simulcast auctions (auctions anchored
by Caterpillar dealers) • Kruse Energy and Equipment Auctioneers live onsite and online simulcast auctions (for the oil and gas industry) • EquipmentOne online auction and marketplace • Mascus sales listing service • TruckPlanet, GovPlanet, SalvageSale and other sector-specific online sales channels • Ritchie Bros. Private Treaty • Ritchie Bros. Financial Services Creates More Valuable Marketplace, Expands Market Customers will benefit from a larger marketplace with more buyers and sellers, as well as a greater number of choices and services. The addition of IronPlanet provides Ritchie Bros. with access to new, large customer segments, including government surplus and oil and gas. Furthermore, the wider range of sales solutions offered by the combined company will allow it to more effectively meet customer preferences in many key international locations, including the U.K., Germany, Japan and China — where Ritchie Bros.’ established infrastructure will provide a platform to launch IronPlanet solutions. Strengthens Digital Capabilities to Provide Enhanced Levels of Customer Service The combined entity will have an integrated technology platform to provide customers with more tailored solutions that meet their needs and enhance the overall customer experience. These solutions, including multiple dealer portal options, valuable business intelligence, amplified data analytics and multiple online sales channels, position the combined company to provide comprehensive asset management solutions. Together, Ritchie Bros. and IronPlanet are better positioned to cater to evolving consumer preferences, with more transactions being conducted online. Collectively, Ritchie Bros. and IronPlanet (on a pro forma basis) sold more than $3.0 billion of assets through online transactions during the 12 months ending June 30, 2016 — ranking the combined business among the world’s top 50 B2B e-commerce companies, based on value sold. Expected to Deliver Long-Term Growth, Profitability The transaction is expected to be accretive to earnings within the first year (excluding transaction costs) and significantly bolster growth in Gross Auction Proceeds (GAP),
revenue and earnings over the long term. The combination will also enhance the generation of free cash flow, which will enable Ritchie Bros. to support strategic growth priorities, return value to shareholders and reduce debt. Opportunities to Build on Business Model, Heritage Ritchie Bros. and IronPlanet share a passion for serving customers and providing them with easy-to-use solutions. Bringing together Ritchie Bros.’ scale, geographic footprint and brand strength with IronPlanet’s complementary online models will offer customers more options to move more of their inventory across multiple sales channels. Transparency and a customer focus will continue to be the cornerstones of the combined company, as it leverages best practices from both organizations, including IronPlanet’s successful inspection and IronClad Assurance equipment condition certification. Transaction Terms Under the terms of the transaction, Ritchie Bros. will acquire 100 percent of the equity of IronPlanet for approximately $740 million in cash and the assumption of unvested equity interests in IronPlanet, subject to adjustment, that brings the total transaction value to approximately $758.5 million. This represents a 13.0x multiple of IronPlanet’s 2017 Estimated Adjusted EBITDA, inclusive of the expected $100 million net present value of tax synergies and $20 million in run-rate cost synergies. Ritchie Bros. intends to finance the transaction through a combination of cash on hand and new debt, and has bridge financing commitments from Goldman Sachs Bank USA subject to customary terms and conditions to facilitate the transaction close. Following the close of the transaction and the required financing, Ritchie Bros. is expected to have a net debt to EBITDA ratio of no more than 3.0x. Ritchie Bros. has secured employment agreements with key executives, who will supplement the strength of Ritchie Bros.’ global management team. Owens has agreed to join the combined company’s executive committee upon closing. The transaction was approved by the Boards of Directors of both companies and is expected to close by the first half of 2017, subject to regulatory clearances and the satisfaction of other customary closing conditions. Ritchie Bros. Boasts Record Sale for Tipton, Calif., Location
Lance Madgwick (L) of Boise, Idaho, and Russ Yensen of Laguna Beach, Calif., were on hand for the auction. Both showed interest in this Cat 420D.
T
raditionally an agricultural hub for Ritchie Bros., the company’s Tipton, Calif., auction site held a largely construction and transportation focused auction on Aug. 17 and set a new site sales record in the process. More than 1,350 equipment items were sold for more than $21 million. More than 2,500 people registered for the Tipton auction, including 1,650 people registering online. Half of the assets in the auction were sold to online bidders, from as far away as Hungary, Poland and Australia. Approximately 72 percent of the equipment was sold to buyers from California. Every item was sold without minimum bids or reserve prices. “We signed a big construction package early on, which allowed us ample time to market it and build a sale around it,” said Chad Apland, regional sales manager, Ritchie Bros. “As a result, we saw huge attendance for this time of year. In fact, we had close to 1,000 more bidders compared to our Tipton auction in August 2015.
We usually see our biggest crowds in our February sale as it’s so close to the World Ag Expo, but this sale rivaled it, helping us achieve great results for consignors.” Nearly 200 companies sold equipment at the Tipton auction, including Sturgeon Services International. “Ritchie Bros. once again has shown us that they are the number one player in the heavy equipment auction space,” said Christopher Sturgeon, vice president of Sturgeon Services International. “Our relationship with Ritchie as both buyer and seller spans decades, and once again I am pleased to say that the decision to go with them was easy and rewarding. We very much look forward to the continued business relationship that Ritchie Bros. has so wonderfully kept, as well as the decades of continued business between our companies.” (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s website at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.) More than 4,500 people from 58 countries registered to bid in the unreserved public auction in Houston on Aug. 24 and 25, including more than 2,900 online bidders. Pricing on construction equipment was particularly strong and we were happy to see great results on a large number of big-ticket, heavy-lift cranes. Also, demand remains strong for vocational trucks. I would like to offer a big thank you to all of our consignors, bidders and buyers that continue to make our auctions great events.” Ritchie Bros. sold equipment for more than 530 owners.
