“In racing, as in construction, you are only as good as the equipment you have under you,” said NASCAR legend Joe Nemechek to a gathering of ROMCO Equipment customers during a recent race weekend at Texas Motor Speedway. This truism was among several comparisons Nemechek and ROMCO owner Robert Mullins drew between racing and heavy construction as they addressed the crowd of contractors and ROMCO customers that were on hand for the event.

A $75 million project known as The Fillmore will reshape downtown Phoenix when it debuts in 2021. Sitting on 2.8 acres, the mixed-use development will include 348 multifamily units and more than 7,000 sq. ft. of ground-floor retail space. “Currently, downtown Phoenix is home to the state’s most diverse population, and, as a result, The Fillmore is designed with the goal of appealing to a wide range of potential renters,” said Paul Tuchin, principal of High Street Residential. “The population downtown is growing at a rapid pace, and the demand for new multifamily development is

very high. The resident base includes a growing pool of young professionals, students, retirees and seasonal renters. Companies continue to expand and locate downtown, drawing additional residents and retailers.” see FILLMORE page 10

ROMCO has been a long-time sponsor of Nemechek and his son, John Hunter, in the NASCAR truck series, and on this weekend, the company’s colors would adorn the younger Nemechek’s car in the Xfinity series race. The ROMCO/Nemechek relationship, which goes back five years, satisfies some important business objectives as well as Mullins’ desire to remain involved in racing. “We knew being involved with a race team would give us a great opportunity to entertain our customers and give them an experience they might not normally be able to enjoy,” Mullins said. “This is one of two big weekends at the track where we go all out to give our customers a good racing experience.” The customer event on this race weekend included a meet-and-greet with both Nemechek drivers, a catered barbecue lunch, pit tours and hospitality suite tickets for the race itself. “We’ve never seen the track at all, so being here in the infield, and seeing the pits is a pretty cool experience,” said Joe Smith of Leland Bradlee Construction, one ROMCO customer in attendance. ‘Everything Clicked’ When Nemechek and Mullins began talking about sponsorship, it became evident that the two organizations shared some key values. “NEMCO Motorsports (Nemechek’s company) is a family business, familyowned, going up against larger competitors every day. We wanted to be part of that,” Mullins said of the race organization. “What I saw in the Nemechek family is

that they worked harder, cared more, were smart and had talent,” Mullins added. “Those are all things we ask of our employees at ROMCO as well.” Joe Nemechek remembers what drew him to working with Mullins and his company. “A few years back Mr. Mullins saw us win a race somewhere and heard an interview with John Hunter and myself. At the time, we were looking for more help to be able to develop John Hunter’s career. Mullins knew me through racing and he reached out to us and said he wanted to help. Once we met him, we knew it was a good fit. Everything clicked. He has been helping us ever since. Robert is a great family guy, and he respects what we do as a family. His operations are incredible. He has great employees and takes care of them. He takes care of his customers, too. It is the same as our business. You are only as good as the people you put around you and the equipment you put under you.” Twenty-two-year-old John Hunter sees the similarities in the two companies as well. “ROMCO has been with me for four years, and we are super thankful for them supporting me and growing with our team,” he said before the Xfinity race. “It is great having a generational family company associated with us. We’re a family owned team as well. I love being around Mr. Mullins and everyone at ROMCO.” Need for Speed Mullins’s interest in racing extends beyond potential business benefits. Given the urban location, work crews must be extra cautious in performing certain tasks during construction. Excavation work will require a carefully structured haul plan, in order to coordinate the details and the process with the city, while keeping in mind the local traffic patterns.

High Street Residential (the residential subsidiary of Trammell Crow Company) and joint venture partner CBRE Global Investors are overseeing construction on the first phase of the project, which is located at the Southeast corner of Fifth Avenue and Fillmore Street. The 533,460-sq.-ft., seven-story building will offer 480 parking spaces and an urban paseo spanning from Fourth Avenue to Sixth Avenue. The urban paseo was designed to accommodate walking, biking and driving traffic and will feature lush landscaping, public gathering areas, decorative lighting, public art and additional street parking. “With the expansion of Arizona State University’s downtown graduate and medical programs, the addition of the light rail and the extraordinary growth in the biotech and education sectors, downtown is welcoming a number of new employees and residents. These people want to live close to school and work, which is creating a demand for more high-end multifamily development. Metro apartment supply continues to be absorbed, as new resi-

dents move into the metro for the rising number of employment opportunities and established educational institutions.” Construction started in August 2019 and will be completed in the third quarter of 2021. “There’s tremendous growth in downtown Phoenix right now, said Tuchin. “Mass transit is expanding downtown, along with local universities and major employers, which will ultimately bring more residents to the area. Phoenix’s downtown is in a renaissance, with multinational corporations inhabiting swaths of office space, with optimism boosting enrollment in higher education located downtown and entertainment and retailers following the growing number of daytime and full-time residents here.” The project is split into two phases, with the timing of Phase II yet to be determined. “Phase I of The Fillmore will feature traditional one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments, as well as alcove studios and junior one-bedrooms units,” said Tuchin. “Building amenities include a clubhouse, a fitness center

and a large pool deck. The building’s lobby will offer concierge services, a coffee bar, a ride-share lounge and a mailroom.” The clubhouse will feature workfrom-home suites, a tequila room for resident gatherings, a billiards room, a kitchen and bar, a lounge, a catering kitchen, a double-sided fireplace and shuffleboard. The pool deck will provide cabanas, grilling stations, swinging lounge chairs, a spa, hammocks and fire pits. A second outdoor deck at the property will boast a serene water feature, a dog run and a “central park.” Retail space at The Fillmore will offer a unique opportunity for prospective tenants to anchor the corners of Fourth and Fifth avenues and Fillmore Street, drawing off the successful F&B business in the area. The development site has direct access to various transportation arteries, immediate adjacency to many major employers, affluent neighborhoods and a wide mix of social venues. Construction spending declined 0.8 percent in October from September but topped year-ago levels by 1.1 percent, as decreases in private nonresidential, multifamily and public projects outweighed a recent revival in single-family homebuilding, according to an analysis Dec. 2 by the Associated General Contractors of America of new federal spending data. Association officials said that the impact of trade conflicts is harming private construction. “A drop in mortgage interest rates has given a boost to single-family homebuilding in recent months, but these gains have been offset by weak private nonresidential spending as trade friction drags down U.S. economic growth,” said Ken Simonson, the association’s chief economist. “Businesses that have been hurt by existing tariffs and retaliatory actions by U.S. trading partners or firms facing uncertainty over future trade policy are likely to hold off on construction projects.” Construction spending totaled $1.291 trillion at a seasonally adjusted annual rate in October, a decrease of 0.8 percent from the September rate but 1.1 percent more than the October 2018 rate, according to estimates the U.S. Census Bureau released. Year-todate spending for January-October combined fell 1.7 percent from the same months in 2018. Private residential construction spending declined 0.9 percent for the month but edged up 0.5 percent from a year ago. Single-family homebuilding rose for the fourth consecutive month, rising 1.6 percent from September, although the October rate was 3.1 percent less than in October 2018. Spending on multifamily projects was down 1.6 percent for the month and down 2.1 percent from a year earlier. Spending on residential improvements fell 4.5 percent for the month but increased 8.2 percent over 12

months. Private nonresidential spending decreased 1.2 percent from September to October and 4.3 percent from a year ago. Major private nonresidential segments experienced mixed year-over-year results. The largest — power construction (comprising electric power generation, transmission and distribution, plus oil and gas fields and pipelines) — climbed 3.6 percent from a year ago. Commercial (retail, warehouse and farm) construction tumbled 17.7 percent. Manufacturing construction inched down 0.2 percent gain. Private office construction spending rose 1.0 percent. Public construction spending dipped 0.2 percent for the month but jumped 10.2 percent from a year earlier. Among the three largest public categories, spending in October climbed 8.4 percent compared to the October 2018 rate for highway and street construction spending, 9.8 percent for educational construction and 13.0 percent for transportation (airports, transit, rail and port) projects. Association officials observed that private nonresidential investment has weakened over the past year as trade disputes and uncertainty over future trade policy have had a negative impact on a variety of agricultural, manufacturing, distribution and transportation businesses. They urged the Trump administration to settle disputes promptly. “Construction firms are at risk of being caught in the crossfire from trade wars unless the government removes tariffs that are hurting the competitiveness of U.S. businesses and gets foreign countries to re-open their markets to U.S. exports,” said Stephen E. ARTBA Predicts Growth for 2020 Transportation Industry The U.S. transportation infrastructure market is expected to grow at least 5 percent next year, according to the annual economic forecast released Dec. 4 by the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA). “The real market growth for 2020 is being fueled by increased transportation investments from federal, state and local governments,” said ARTBA Chief Economist Alison Premo Black, who conducted the analysis. Total domestic transportation construction and related-market activity in 2020 should reach $300.4 billion, up from 2019’s $286.5 billion, after adjusting for project costs and inflation. The transportation construction market grew by 8 percent in 2019 compared to 2018, driven largely by gains in highway, street and pavement work, which grew by $9.6 billion to $73.1 billion. Airport construction work on

runways and terminals increased by less than 1 percent in 2019 but was still at record investment levels. Strong growth in the subway, light rail and mass transit sector, as well as private railroad investment helped support a strong year for transportation construction activity. One variable, Black said, is the outlook for the reauthorization of the FAST Act transportation law, due in 2020, and the ability of Congress to find additional revenues to support the Highway Trust Fund (HTF). Any project delays because states are concerned about whether the next federal surface transportation bill is completed in a timely matter could temper 2020 market growth, Black added. Overall, transportation construction market activity is expected to increase or be steady in about half of the states, the ARTBA analysis shows. Some of the largest markets expected to remain stable or grow include Texas, California, Illinois,

New York, Florida, North Carolina, Washington, Minnesota, Michigan, Arizona and Wisconsin. Black shared her findings during a Dec. 4 webinar for analysts, investors, transportation construction market executives, and public officials. Other market variables include material prices, increased labor costs and labor shortages in some regions. Among the other key Black findings: Public & Private Highway, Street & Related Construction • The real value of public highway, street and related construction investment by state transportation departments and local governments — the largest market sector — is expected to increase by 6 percent to $77.5 billion after growing 15 percent in 2019. • Construction work on private highways, bridges, parking lots

and driveways will increase from $69.1 billion in 2019 to $71.8 billion in 2020 and will continue to grow over the next five years as market activity increases in those sectors. Bridges & Tunnels • The pace of bridge and tunnel construction work stayed flat in 2019 and is forecast to grow by $800 million, or 3 percent, in 2020. Bridge and tunnel market activity fell slightly from $28.8 billion in 2018 to $28.6 billion in 2019, after adjusting for project costs and inflation. Light Rail, Subways, & Railroads • Public transit and rail construction are expected to grow from $23 billion in 2019 to $24.2 billion in 2020, a 5 percent increase. • Subway and light rail investment are expected to reach a new record level, increasing from $10.3 billion this year to $11 billion in 2020.

Airport Runways & Terminals • After growing 34 percent in 2018, airport terminal and related construction work, including structures like parking garages, hangars, air freight terminals and traffic towers, is estimated to increase from $18.5 billion in 2019 to $19.6 billion. • Runway work is forecasted to increase from $4.7 billion in 2019 to $4.9 billion in 2020. Ports & Waterways • The value of port and waterway investment should grow to $3.4 billion in 2020. Construction activity in 2019 was $3.3 billion, up from $2.5 billion in 2018. The equipment and event rental industry in North America is expected to finish the year with total revenue up 5.35 percent to $61.56 billion, the first time combined rental revenue for Canada and the United States has surpassed $60 billion, according to the latest forecast released by the American Rental Association (ARA). The latest updated figures, released Nov. 7, show rental revenue in the United States forecasted to be $56.02 billion in 2019 with Canada generating $5.54 billion in revenue from rentals of construction and industrial, general tool, and party and event equipment. The five-year forecast calls for continued growth for U.S. rental revenue through at least 2023, reaching $64.1 billion that year,

These milling machines now meet U.S. EPA Tier IV Final and EU Stage V emission standards powered by a fuel-efficient Cat C18 turbocharged, 6-cylinder diesel engine. NAPA Survey: Use of Recycled Asphalt Reaches New High Asphalt pavements are the most consistently recycled material in the United States. Every day as part of maintenance and improvement projects, old asphalt pavement material is reclaimed from roads and parking lots and then put back to use in new pavements. In fact, according to the latest industry survey by the National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) in partnership with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) more than 100 million tons of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) was collected for re-use in the United States during 2018, saving some 61.4 million cu. yds. of landfill space. This survey has been conducted for each construction season since 2009 by NAPA, and it has consistently found that nearly 100 percent of RAP is put to beneficial uses, primarily new asphalt pavements. â€œOver the years, weâ€™ve seen steady advancement in the amount of RAP being used across the country. This has been the result of concerted engineering efforts by industry and road owners to research and apply best practices to ensure we maintain or improve performance while increasing the use of recycled materials,â€? said NAPA President and CEO Audrey Copeland. â€œAs interest grows in incorporating other recycled materials into pavements, we must continue to gain a solid understanding of how new materials affect pavement performance before we move to widespread deployment.â€? Nationally, the average amount of RAP in new asphalt pavements during 2018 was 21.1 percent, which is the highest level reported since the survey began in 2009. The survey found that 82.2 million tons of RAP, along with 1.05 million tons of recycled asphalt shingles (RAS) were used in 389.3

million tons of new asphalt pavement mixes in the United States during 2018. An additional 8.8 million tons of RAP and RAS were used as aggregate, in cold-mix asphalt, and other road-building activities. The survey also found that at year-end 2018 about 111.7 million tons of RAP and RAS was stockpiled for future use across the country. Although national usage estimates were not calculated, respondents to the survey reported recycling some 1.8 million tons of recycled tire rubber, steel and blast furnace slags, cellulose fiber, and other reclaimed and waste materials into nearly 12.3 million tons of asphalt paving mixtures during 2018. In total, more than 85 million tons of recycled materials â€” primarily RAP and RAS â€” were used in new asphalt pavement mixtures during the 2018 construction season, a 7.6 percent increase from the amount of recycled materials used in 2017. The use of RAP and RAS alone resulted in cost sav-

ings of more than $2.9 billion compared to the use of virgin materials. The asphalt pavement industry also continues to make significant use of energy-saving warm-mix asphalt (WMA) technologies. In 2018, 157.4 million tons of asphalt pavement mixture was produced using WMA technologies. More than half of this tonnage was produced at reduced temperatures, meaning less energy was required in manufacturing. The most common WMA technology used is plant-based foaming, which injects a small amount of water into the asphalt during production. A number of environmental, worker safety, and construction benefits have been realized through the adoption of WMA technologies. â€œA decade ago, WMA technologies were a novel idea. In 2018, though, more than half the asphalt pavement mixture tonnage produced in 23 states used WMA technologies, and in six of those states, it was more than 75 percent of the tonnage,â€? said John Harper, 2019 NAPA chairman and senior vice president of Construction Partners Inc. in Dothan, Ala. â€œWhile there remains room to grow their use, WMA technologies have become just another tool we can use to produce the best asphalt mixture to meet a given project or agency need.â€? The survey was conducted in the first quarter of 2019. Results from 272 companies with 1,329 plants in 49 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and two U.S. territories, along with data from state asphalt pavement associations for 33 states, were used to compile the report. John Deere Collaborates With Customers for Upgrades John Deere has enhanced its lineup of five small-frame GSeries skid steers and compact track loaders, providing operators with even more power and efficiency on the job site. While the five models (312GR, 314G, 316GR, 317G, 318G) were introduced to the market more than three years ago, John Deere continually works with its customers in the landscaping, agricultural material handling and construction industries to better understand their needs and how to improve machinery for maximum productivity, uptime and solutions. “As we constantly source feedback from our customers, we heard them request minor improvements to the smallframe lineup, such as simplified maintenance, increased visibility and easier connections to attachments,” said Gregg Zupancic, product marketing manager, skid steers and compact track loaders, John Deere Construction

Construction Equipment Guide has been a trusted source of information about new and used pieces of equipment, construction industry issues, and public and private sector projects. Industry pros depend upon the publication to stay abreast of equipment news. The Buyers Guide reflects that marketplace experience. This Buyers Guide is about the “mini” and compact equipment that has proliferated over the last couple of decades. In the 1950s, the construction industry began employing small machines instead of human backs or dragging out large machines for relatively small tasks. It was the result of the work of inventive blacksmiths like Ed Malzahn, an Oklahoman who early in that decade built a ditch-digging device he called a Ditch Witch. About the same time, a couple of Minnesota blacksmiths crafted what they called the Keller self-propelled loader. The small three-wheeled machine pretty quickly evolved into what they rebranded a Bobcat skid steer. These significant inventions spurred miniaturization of serious construction machinery. Backhoes — themselves a downsizing of massive crane diggers — were supplanted on some job sites by mini-excavators. In time, earth-moving tasks like digging, auguring, leveling and loading were given over to compact wheel loaders and skid steer and track loaders configured with specialized attachments. Not satisfied with such resizing, manufacturers further shrank the machines by creating “mini” versions of the tools in walk-behind or stand-on models. Today, do-it-yourself property owners, landscapers, farm operators, contractors, municipal and factory management rely upon small motorized equipment to do jobs they used to hire others to do or accomplished less efficiently using larger machinery. It is a true revolution. If you are thinking about buying or renting a mini or compact machine, you are a part of it.

If You’re Buying Buyers of compact and mini equipment certainly are not all alike. They are homeowners doing weekend work, or a small concrete contractor, or a multinational company with fleets of equipment. In each case, a buyer shops for the machine that will most efficiently complete a job. Following are some considerations in evaluating the equipment: 1) Machine size and configuration Having decided to go small, the decision-making doesn’t end there. If the task is lifting, the question is, how high? If trenching is the job, how wide or deep or long will the ditch be? And if you’ll be trenching all day,

do you want to sit or stand? Do you need a trencher or, perhaps, an excavator? Do tight quarters require an articulated machine? If the ground is soft, a track loader might be the answer. Pushing snow? A wheeled skid steer does it better. A variety of jobs in mind? Think attachments. Decisions, decisions…. 2) Manufacturer support and warranty Manufacturing of compact machinery does not require the same capitalization as building machines as big as a house. Consequently, smaller companies can do it. Buyers should think about how much support a manufacturer or dealer can provide in the event a small or mini machine suffers catastrophic failure. A “good deal” can be a bad deal if an engine blows, an undercarriage repeatedly fails, a hydraulic system chronically leaks. Safeguards against such misfortune are a supportive dealer and an ironclad manufacturer warranty. 3) New or used What’s the new machine going to cost? That’s the bottom line. A used track loader will cost less than the same model bought new. What a buyer should consider is whether a machine is for production work or will be utilized in a supporting role. The latter is perfect for second-hand machinery. The rest of the story is about support. New machines come with warranties. Yet a machine from a rental fleet will have extensive maintenance records — which can be the next best thing to a warranty. Shop prudently and wisely.

If You’re Renting/Leasing Periodic or one-time tasks — think fence-building or site preparation — may warrant acquiring a piece of equipment for a weekend or a week, just long enough to compete the job. No sense owning a machine that sits idle for long periods. But productivity is the bottom line for rented equipment, too, so go to the rental lot knowing how to get the most for your money. 1) Get a little more machine than you need This is where good management shows itself. Scenario: A pipeline needs running from a water main to a new shop a half mile away. A 50-hp ride-on trencher will dig a ditch deep and wide enough to accommodate the line. Rental cost: $1,240 for a week. But wait: A 5-ton mini-excavator with a narrow bucket only costs $30 more per week. Why not get the excavator and complete some other loading and digging tasks? Why not indeed. 2) Trust, but verify the deal Independent rental companies and OEM dealerships stay in business by satisfying customers. Still, as a former president once said, “Trust, but verify.” Researching a firm or dealer is a good idea. Go online. Talk to people who have rented equipment. Ask questions. Does the firm back up its equipment? What happens if a chain breaks? Which loader brand is deemed most reliable? In the end, low rental rates aren’t everything.

Tips on Inspecting Used Compact/Mini Equipment Compactness can conceal. When mechanisms and systems are neatly fitted into small spaces, even cursory examination can be frustrating. Nevertheless, buyers should seek out telltale signs of abuse or poor maintenance. Here are some things to focus on:

1) Hydraulic systems Compact machines perform big-time tasks because of their hydraulic systems. The oil is a multiplier that gives skid steers, mini-excavators and other small machines outsize performance. So, ensuring that the hydraulic system is functioning without leaking is important. Chronic leaks are identifiable by oil residue on the frame. Operating the machine can reveal seals without integrity as well as weakness in a pump. 2) Major moving parts A trencher without a smoothly operating bar and chain is a problem. The same is true for a compact excavator that rotates haltingly on its base or a small articulated loader with a rumbling hinge joint. Components that are central to a machine’s operation must be fully functional for a piece of equipment to be of value. Lesser components — say a balky cab door or worn-out quick-attach unit — can be replaced. The major parts are something else. 3) Undercarriage When everything rides on something, the “something” must be flawlessly reliable. That is the case with track undercarriages. If a piece of equipment can’t move, it is just a piece of iron. So, tracks and their auxiliary pieces — tensioners, sprockets, suspension system (if any) — should be in generally good condition. Excessive wear of one or more components suggests overall poor maintenance. Look for a machine with a sound undercarriage. SEE GUIDE PAGE 42

GUIDE FROM PAGE 41 4) Straight and true arms Compact excavators nimbly slice, dig and load dirt on the strength of their hinged booms. Trenchers create neat narrow ditches employing rotating chains riding an extended bar. Track loaders do their versatile work with attachments at the end of their lift arms. All of these appendages are subject to stresses. Visually and in live operation determine if arms or booms are bent or cracked or otherwise significantly misaligned. That is a red flag. 5) Electrical system Unless a machine is relatively old, an electrical system is apt to be sound. Indications of an unsound system include wiring with frayed covering or exposed core wires, battery posts that are corroded, loose and fired electrical fittings, wires that dangle instead of being affixed to the frame and so on. These poorly maintained components could be an indication of an unreliable electrical system, which reduces the value of a machine.

What You Can Expect to Pay Mini and compact machinery are not cheap because they are well-made and contain modern electronics, which never are inexpensive. But the machines are wonderful labor-savers and highly productive pieces of equipment. They are worth the cost, in other words. Here are some examples of pricing: • New - Mini: A 20-hp walk-behind trencher with a 6-inch-wide cut is priced at $12,000; a 25-hp mini-track loader with a 1,000-lb operating capacity can cost $34,500. - Compact: A 74-hp compact track loader with an automatic track-tensioning system is priced at $49,000; a 91-hp skid steer with a vertical lift boom costs $80,000. • Used - Mini: A 34-inch-wide, 22-hp mini-track loader with eight hours on the engine costs $17,900; a 25-hp, wide-track utility loader with 175 hours is priced at $28,500. Compact: A 74-hp compact radial lift skid steer with 13 hours on it is priced at $33,000; a 25-hp compact excavator with 99 hours has a price tag of $40,000. • Rent / Lease An online survey indicates… - a 24-inch walk-behind trencher can cost $200-250 a day, $550-650 a week and $1,200-1,400 a month - a mini-skid steer with 500-lb. lift capacity can cost $225-275 a day, $750-800 a week and $1,700-1,800 a month - a 3,0000-lb. compact track loader can cost $600-650 a day, $1,5001,600 a week and $3,000-4,000 a month - a compact articulated wheel loader with a one-yard bucket can cost $350-400 a day, $900-1,000 a week and $2,800-3,100 a month

1) Sit or stand? At the nexus of mini and compact machines is a quandary: Which configuration will work best for your situation? A large stand-on trencher might be sufficient for tasks, but the sit-down operator’s platform on a compact trencher can increase productivity. What to buy? If your choice really is between a large rideon machine and a sit-down model, going with the larger machine nearly always is the better choice. It offers the prospect of more versatility and productivity, plus can mean higher resale value if you ever trade up.

2) How much versatility? Purchasers of a compact or mini machine of some kind usually have a primary job in mind. An even better mindset is to consider the bigger picture. You want the track loader to clean up job sites and perform other support work. But if you get a skid steer, which sometimes performs better in snow, you could put it to use in the off-season clearing parking lots. Similar calculations can be made about mini-excavators, wheel loaders, dumper trucks and other compact machines. What might be their secondary application? 3) How much auto is enough? Software and related technology incorporated into today’s mini and compact equipment offer precise automatic controls that eliminate human approximation. Think bucket grade and tilt controls on loaders and excavators. Depth controls. Return-to-grade controls. Hydrostatic settings. It’s revolutionary but also can be pricey. However, does your work really require grading to be within millimeters of accuracy? Can you select and shift gears manually and still do a first-class job? Don’t pay for luxury for the fun of it. 4) Dealer support Compact and mini equipment does serious work and deserves serious support systems. Sometimes it needs more support than bigger pieces of equipment because its smaller engines and lighter dimensioned tools are overstressed compared to a larger piece of equipment performing the same task. What kind of OEM engine and components warranty backs that mini-excavator? How responsive and trained is the local dealership that will maintain the machine? Buy with service and support in mind. 5) Beware of brand loyalty Loyalty to a manufacturer isn’t like loyalty to a professional athletic franchise. In the working world, there is no special camaraderie on “game days.” Dealers are happy to have you on their “team,” but the relationship is openly built on dollars and cents, not transitory sporting glory. So, shop for value. Explore a range of manufacturers. If the characteristic handling of a certain brand’s products appeals to you, for example, set aside the preference and at least try another. There is a world of good products out there.

At one time, Sears Roebuck sold a limited line of construction machinery, and for many years yard and garden tractors have been part of its product line. This is a 1973 Sears SS16 Twin, outfitted with an optional loader, and it’s owned by Ede Hirchak of Hawk Point, Mo.

The Byers Bearcat Junior, built in the late 1930s, was one of the smallest cable excavators built. With its swing boom, it is in a sense a forebear of today’s compact hydraulic excavators. HCEA National Director Larry Kotkowski is the operator.

Agricat offered a line of small crawler tractors, powered by Wisconsin gas engines, in the 1940s and 1950s. They could be equipped with either dozers or loaders. This example is part of a sizeable collection owned by Jeff Fildes of Grafton, Ohio.

Screen Machine Launches Line of Compact Crushing, Screening Plants

Screen Machine Industries LLC has announced the launch of its SMI Compact line of crushers and screening plants. The first public presentation of the SMI line occurred earlier in the year during a soft launch at the World of Asphalt Show and Conference and co-located AGG1 Aggregates Academy and Expo where the machines attracted a good deal of interest. According to Timothy Miller, director of business development of SMI Compact, the introduction of the line is a part of Screen Machine’s longterm business strategy that also includes the recent acquisition of Diamond Z. While in large part each business group will operate with a great deal of autonomy regarding its distribution channels, product lines and engineering, the overall corporate structure will benefit from greater market access, economies of scale, purchasing strength, warehousing capabilities and equipment and parts logistics. Miller sees the SMI Compact line as providing access to new markets while enhancing equipment options for existing customers. Industry professionals have come to recognize the benefits of employing smaller equipment for a number of tasks where space limitations or the scope of the job makes them an attractive alternative. Transportation, fuel economy and equipment costs are all factors that have contributed to the growing demand for smaller machines. At roughly 1/5 the size of the standard line crushers and screens that Screen Machine has been manufacturing and selling for more than a half century, the SMI Compact equipment is ideal for a variety of applications. “There’s really nothing else like the SMI Compact line in the marketplace, and we think it fills an existing void within the crushing and screening industry,” said Miller. Traditionally, crushing and screening machines have been larger units designed primarily for constant daily use in applications such as mining operations and recycling. As more contractors recognize that a good deal of their work does not require large machines and more see the benefit of pro-

The SMI Compact line is extremely well suited for work in urban areas where full-size crushing and screening machines are simply too large, as well as small-job applications, like driveway replacements, concrete renovation and landscaping work. The line also is ideal in rental markets for their ease of operation, The 50TJ Tracked Jaw Crusher is the largest of the SMI Compact line, capable of processing up to 50 tons per hour.

The unit can be set up in five minutes and is ideal for recycling, demolition and construction waste. The 50TJ comes equipped with dust suppression and a cross-belt magnet for removing steel from processed materials. The wireless, remote control system offers convenience and safety for the operator. At 23 ft. 10 in. long; 7 ft. 3 in. wide; a maximum height of 9 ft. 2 in. and weighing in at 26,000 lbs., the 50TJ is the only machine in the line that requires a semi-tractor trailer for transport. • 20TJ Tracked Jaw Crusher — Operated by remote control handset, the 10 in. x 20 in. track-mounted jaw crusher features a hydraulically driven vibratory feeder with standard dust suppression. Ready for crushing on the construction site, the versatile 20TJ makes quick work of reinforced concrete, brick, porcelain and other aggregates materials. The unit can be ready to work in five minutes and is powered by a Tier IV 25hp Kubota diesel engine. competitively in the TIDA (Texas International Drivers Association) series in the late ’80s. In the ’90s, his attention turned to road racing, and he began racing in the SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) series, where he competed in both the Regional and Pro Circuit. Paul Birkholz, a product support manager of ROMCO, remembers those days well. For most of his current bosses’ racing career, Birkholz was right alongside as crew chief. According to Birkholz, after taking a few years off, Mullins went back to competing in late models, this time at Houston Motorsports Park. Eventually, he would found the ROMCO Super Late Model Series. His series would run at all the asphalt tracks around Texas, and once Texas Motor Speedway was opened, the series raced there on the same weekend as the Indy Car and NASCAR series.

Achieving Success John Hunter Nemechek would go on to finish fifth in the Xfinity race, driving the ROMCO-sponsored Chevrolet for GMS Racing. Racing insiders said it is just a matter of time before he becomes a regular in NASCAR’s top division, The Monster Energy Series. The cost of racing in that series requires the support of large companies with a national footprint, so the future of ROMCO and NEMCO is not clearly defined at this point. Mullins said that was the plan all along. “When we started with the Nemecheks, we said their job was to outgrow our sponsorship, and they seem on the verge doing that. relocation is taking place at the site, which was a section of vacant land. “Constructing in an urban environment is often a challenge to overcome on a project,” said Tuchin. “The Fillmore fronts one of the main avenues of entry for the downtown business district, which requires us to work efficiently, in order to allow the area to operate as normal as possible.” Regarding infrastructure work, said Tuchin, “In order to construct the Taylor Street paseo between 4th to 6th avenues, we need to complete vertical realignments of water line, in addition to adding new sewer and water lines within the paseo.” Roughly 34,000 cu. yds. of dirt will be moved on the project. Key tasks yet to be carried out include shoring and excavation, to allow foundation work to commence. Mobilization has already been completed, along with construction yard setup and major coordination with city engineering and

traffic for project logistics. Construction is ongoing. Given the urban location, work crews must be extra cautious in performing certain tasks during

construction. Excavation work will require a carefully structured haul plan, in order to coordinate the details and the process with the city, while keeping in mind the

local traffic patterns. Tuchin said constructing the multifamily units, parking spaces and ground-floor retail space takes a significant amount of teamwork. “It takes a highly talented general contractor with a well-coordinated plan to execute utility relocations, infrastructure work, traffic restrictions and project safety for more than 200 workers from various subcontractors working together to achieve project completion.” Construction milestones will include utility relocation, mass excavation, foundation start and underground work. Equipment used on the job will include a Caterpillar track hoe, a Caterpillar 420F front loader, a Komatsu track hoe, a Caterpillar 166M loader and an International water truck. Some of the main materials used during construction will include concrete, masonry, steel, metal framing, wood framing, stucco and metal panel. “Utility and infrastructure work will be the most time- consuming,”

Tuchin said. “The project also requires major coordination with various city departments, in addition to coordinated lane restrictions and closures.” According to Chasse Building Team project manager Evan Oates, “Work on Taylor Street water and sewer is proceeding. Several manholes and realignments have been installed, including the installation of a sewer bypass to keep active sewer open.” Oates said performing certain tasks can be difficult, based on the surroundings. “Any excavation in a downtown urban environment is challenging. We are finding old sewer and water from the 1920s.” While much work remains on the project, Tuchin said it’s rewarding to see construction finally under way. “We’ve been planning this project for a handful of years, and it’s exciting to see it come to fruition. We look forward to adding to and being a part of the growth of downtown Phoenix.”  CEG

Ritchie Holds Auctions in Fort Worth, Anthony, N.M.

ore than 8,300 bidders participated online and in person Dec. 10 to 11, 2019, at Ritchie Bros.’ multi-milliondollar unreserved public equipment auction in Fort Worth, Texas. With bidders from 62 countries, approximately 56 percent of the equipment in the auction was sold to out-of-state buyers, from as far away as Australia, China, and Egypt. Online bidders purchased approximately 62 percent of the equipment sold (by dollar value). More than 5,850 equipment items and trucks were sold in the auction, including 165+ excavators, 140 skid steers, 85+ compactors, 245+ aerial work platforms and more, as well as 660+ truck tractors – a new company record for number of truck tractors sold in a single auction. All items were sold without minimum bids or reserve prices.

Rapid Growth Drives bidadoo to Daytime Online Auctions Bidadoo’s weekly online auctions have moved to daytime on Tuesday. After 16 years of evening auctions, many factors have prompted this move, including access to mobile technology, growth of buyer base, more commercial grade equipment, more professional buyers and a better buyer experience. Several factors have contributed to the decision to move to a daytime Tuesday bidadoo auction: • 61 percent mobile participation — today’s mobile devices enable anytime, anywhere auction participation via mobile friendly sites and applications. Sixteen years ago, bidders were more tied to their desktops to participate in online auctions. Sellers are seeing greater returns of more commercial grade equipment through bidadoo’s auctions.
