The project has Pike Industries “milling the existing surface to a specified depth, then the first pass reclaim process will occur, pulverizing and homogenizing the remaining pavement with underlying subgrade,” according to VTrans. “New gravel will be placed in some areas along the corridor to improve banking, then a second pass reclaim process will take place, which will facilitate a second round of homogenizing of the gravel and pavement as well as add in a stabilizing agent to create a structural layer of subgrade. Following the second pass reclaim, a structural thickness of pavement will be Additionalplaced.”work includes the replacement and maintenance of existing guardrail runs, some culvert replacements, ditching, center line rumble strip (CLRS) installations where criteria have been met, the replacement of signs along the corridor and upgrades to meet current standards set in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).“Thelength of the project is described as ‘Poor’ to ‘Very Poor’ based on the most recent surface condition data,” said VTrans. “The project was originally programmed in 2016, but plan development did not take off until early 2019. Since this project was programmed based on the condition data, there was no true planning or scoping phase. Once complete, the roadway will be fully rehabilitated with an engineered structure based on the traffic demands. Because this project is a full-depth reclamation, VTrans had the ability to modify and correct banking to engineered superelevation requirements. Further, there will be drainage replacements and improvements installed to help keep water out of the roadway’s structure.”

During the 2021 construction season, work was conducted on drainage, slope and erosion control throughout the project.

The scenic two-lane road in the Green Mountains — one lane in each direction with shoulders on either side that are primarily 3 to 4 ft. wide and has some stretches that are as little as 1 to 2 ft. wide — was constructed in the mid-1930s in southern Vermont. The road, which carries approximately 6,800 vehicles daily, is used by local traffic, tourists and trucks. “The project will install 11-foot travel lanes and shoulders in the 4 to 5-foot range wherever possible,” according to VTrans. “Pinch points will be encountered due to topography and existing infrastructure, which will limit the final shoulder widths in someThelocations.”workzone, between Wilmington mile marker 7.077 (Sun and Ski Road intersection) and Brattleboro mile marker 4.178 (Edward Heights), has crews working on the full width of the roadway, while maintaining one-lane of traffic.
By Irwin Rapoport CEGPikeCORRESPONDENTIndustries,a CRH Company, began the $27.6 million Vermont Agency of Transportation’s (VTrans) project that is resurfacing 12.5 mi. of VT-9 between Wilmington and Brattleboro. The project began in August 2021 and is expected to be completed Aug. 11, 2023.

“Excavation work was also conducted at the intersection near South Road,” said VTrans. “The contractor completed all expected work during the 2021 season.”
“We have not begun any resurfacing,” said Nicholas LaClair, Pike Industries project superintendent. “We spent last fall installing new culverts and underdrain and ditching for better drainage. Our current
The project was designed by CHA Consulting Inc. “One concern with this project is the mountainous terrain the road travels through,” according to VTrans. “During design, it was recognized that there could be some issues with traditional use of cold mix recycled pavement from the steep grades and heavy truck traffic. As such, VTrans elected to use a conventional hot mix for the base course to ensure that the pavement would stay put while subsequent layers were placed. We expect reclaims to last for 20 or more years with the proper preventive maintenance activities, mainly crack sealing and bonded wearing course applications in the future.”Traffic impacts are localized, based on where crews are working.
Pike Industries Leads $27.6M VT-9 Resurfacing Project

The project began in August 2021 and is expected to be completed Aug. 11, 2023.
“There are no plans for detours,” said VTrans. “The agency is working with the DMV and state police to help with enforcement, and there will be a temporary over width restriction implemented to help reroute oversize loads. During construction traffic is being managed with alternating one-way traffic. Flaggers are stationed throughout the work zone to guide motorists and manage traffic as construction is under way.”Pike Industries was awarded the contract on May 3, 2021. The first season concluded in late “Winterfall. break for construction projects in Vermont ends on April 15,” said VTrans “However, the start of work is dependent on weather conditions and tentative start to begin at the end of March.”
This phase of the work had crews trim trees, dig trenches and place tarps on them that were then filled in with gravel as well as widen some shoulders.

Winchester Commuter Rail Station Makeover Begins
The construction’s impact on local parking began April 4, MBTA noted, and will continue through the completion of the enterprise.Laraway Road also will remain closed for the duration of the work, and portions of the Waterfield and Aberjona parking areas will be unavailable during construction. The installation of a temporary crosswalk has displaced parking on Winchester’s Waterfield Road, adjacent to Laraway Road.
Construction work will take place at Winchester Center station throughout the rest of summer, and into the fall and winter, MBTA noted. The renovation work at the commuter station this summer includes continued demolition work and the installation of micropiles to reinforce the building’sThefoundation.surrounding neighborhood is asked to be patient as increased noise from the construction can be expected from the use of heavy equipment and machinery, according to the transit authority.
Winchester Center station was closed in January 2021 due to a need for repairs on the facility, which had not had any major updates since the 1950s. Additionally, it no longer met current accessibility standards, according to MBTA.
“Winchester Center station is an example of the MBTA collaborating with the communities it serves to make important safety upgrades while also improving the customer experience,” said MassDOT’s Tesler.
“Allowing for important safety upgrades, increased station capacity and improved accessibility for people of all abilities, renovating Winchester Center station is an important investment in our commuter rail infrastructure with many upgrades to come for riders,” explained MBTA General Manager Steve Poftak at the project’s kickoff event.
Other updates are slated to reconstruct access ramps and add new elevators for better accessibility; upgrade canopies, signs, railings and lighting for safety and security; provide new benches, bike racks, a public address system and other amenities for comfort and convenience; and build walkways, sidewalks and parking lot areas.
Work will primarily take place during the day, Monday through Friday, from approximately 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Construction advisories will be distributed ahead of any scheduled night or weekend work, if necessary.Construction set to take place in the late summer and into early winter in 2023 includes drilling shafts, installing micropiles, and constructing platforms, ramps and a headhouse, or the aboveground part of the transit station. In addition, elevator foundation and structure preparation work in the Aberjona and Waterfield areas will be performed in the coming weeks. This fall, MBTA plans to oversee the installation of micropiles in the Quill Rotary area as well as drilling shafts, and the beginning of the construction of station entrances in the Laraway area.
“We’re pleased to celebrate this groundbreaking here today and look forward to celebrating the re-opening of Winchester Center station when complete. Thank you to our partners at MassDOT, local leaders, transportation advocates and our riders for their support as we work to complete this project.”MBTA noted that the renovated Winchester Center station is expected to open to Lowell Line riders in spring 2024.
Page 6 • September 14, 2022 • www.constructionequipmentguide.com • New England States Supplement • Construction Equipment Guide

The scheduled improvements will completely makeover Winchester Center station and include structural safety repairs and upgrades to accessibility and facility capacity. With a construction cost of approximately $50 million, the 21st-century station will feature modern high-level and accessible platforms to allow for easy boarding and to accommodate longer, nine-car trains.
Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) Secretary Jamey Tesler and Steve Poftak, general manager of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), led a contingent of state and local leaders, community partners and others June 30 at the groundbreaking of upcoming improvements to the Winchester Center station on the Lowell Commuter Rail Line.
“These efforts continue to deliver on the Baker-Polito Administration’s commitment to providing reliable, accessible service for all riders. I thank the MBTA for its work on this project and for continuing to prioritize infrastructure investments like this renovated station, and we thank those who continue to support critical capital investments as we modernize the T.”

“The BVT students were very engaged and asked great questions,” Adam Buckpitt, SITECH Northeast’s product support manager, said. “I look forward to working with them more in the future. They bring fresh ideas to the table, and we can learn a lot from each other.”The entire drone flight took about 18 minutes. Before GNSS technology, the manual process would have taken a week. The stratus software then used the drone footage to create a 3D topographical map of the property with its different grades and elevations. 3D maps are important tools in the planning and construction phases of a project as all of the site’s data is clearly displayed on one map.“The partnership with Milton CAT has created new learning opportunities for our skilled students to delve deeper into their career options,” said BVT’s SuperintendentDirector Michael F. Fitzpatrick. “While there are many paths to success, we are proud to see our students further their vocational-technical training alongside industry experts and gain experience that will help launch their careers.” This relationship has the potential to set a new threshold for cost-effect community partnerships. Milton CAT and its sister companies look forward to more demonstrations at BVT and a continued partnership that supports their students in their career pursuits.

EDUCATION from page 1
With the school’s proximity to Milton CAT’s headquarters in Milford, Milton CAT offers accessible co-op opportunities.
In June, a team from SITECH Northeast, a dealer of Trimble machine control technology, visited BVT’s Engineering & Robotics students and demonstrated how to use Trimble Global Navigational Satellite System technology (GNSS, formerly known as GPS) to take measurements of the property boundaries and capture drone footage to produce a topographical map of the school’s property. The team used the measured ground points to correlate and overlay the drone flight data. To get an accurate measurement of the heavily wooded property bounds, the team used Trimble GNSS rovers along with a base station and a process called differentially corrected real time measurements (RTK). The rovers were placed at each of the property’s corners, which were identified on the printed property map from the school. The rovers then listened to satellite signals and corrections from the base station. The base station was placed in an identifiable position on school grounds. This allowed the SITECH team to precisely measure the property boundaries.Muchof BVT’s property is heavily wooded, which would have posed a challenge to traditional GNSS technology. However, Trimble’s proprietary technology was still able to accurately measure through the tree canopy due to its advanced hardware and software. All the measurements were uploaded into the Trimble Stratus software including the drone data which created a dense set of data points needed to create a 3D topographical map. The students helped the SITECH team launch the drone. Once launched, the drone captured images following a flight plan determined by its software and published imagery. The students also assisted with changing the drone’s batteries halfway through its flight.

The school’s curriculum rotates between academic classes and the students’ selected technical shop. Every other week the students are in their technical shop preparing to enter their selected trade. Through the Cooperative Education Program (co-op) at BVT, seniors and third-trimester juniors also are able to gain hands-on experience working for a local company during their shop weeks.
Milton CAT Looks to Foster Future Industry Career Opportunities
Milton CAT and its sister companies, SITECH Northeast, Milton Rents and Tri-Point Construction Layout, have partnered with Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School (BVT) to offer career development support to its students.
of career opportunities Milton CAT has available in the Blackstone Valley. Serving the towns of Bellingham, Blackstone, Douglas, Grafton, Hopedale, Mendon, Milford, Millbury, Millville, Northbridge, Sutton, Upton and Uxbridge, Mass., BVT has 18 vocational-technical programs that students can pursue. Its programs range from Automotive and Construction Technology to Engineering & Robotics and Health Services.
A team from SITECH Northeast visited BVT and spoke with the Engineering & Robotics students about using Trimble Global Navigational Satellite System technology (GNSS, formerly known as GPS). The team demonstrated how to use GNSS to take property boundary measurements and drone footage to produce a topographical map of the property at BVT.

Last fall, Milton CAT attended BVT’s open house to show the students and their parents what opportunities are available at Milton CAT.
The Trimble stratus software used the drone footage of the property at BVT to create a 3D topographical map of the property with its different grades and elevations. 3D maps are important tools in the planning and construction phases of a project as all the site’s data is clearly displayed on one map.
The company welcomed its first two BVT co-op students this past school year. The students worked in the service shop and the parts department. In service, they helped rebuild machine components such as hammer attachments and hydraulic cylinders. In parts, they experienced the entire parts lifecycle from maintaining inventory integrity to fulfilling customer orders. Milton CAT hopes to bring on more co-op students from a variety of BVT’s shops in the future.

“We are one of those [museums] that has a permanent place, I hope, in the hearts of Maine people, and that love affair will be sustained and rekindled when they see what we have to offer,” he said. “We’ve changed with the times and been able to improve.”
The construction phase advances at Maine’s capitol complex in Augusta with the recent effort to upgrade the Cultural Building that houses the State Museum, Library and Archives.
Improved Museum to BeMore Inclusive
From Fishman’s perspective, the Maine State Museum, which opened at its current site in 1971, is one of the few institutions in the state that “defines life in Maine.”

With an estimated cost of $20 million, McDonald and other officials at the state facility said they are raising money to pay for both the work and new exhibits.
The list of work yet to be completed includes asbestos removal, replacement of all major mechanical systems — including heating, air conditioning, and ventilation — and the installation of new windows and insulation to improve energy efficiency.

The building, located at 230 State St. in Augusta, was forced to shutter in June 2020 when its heating and cooling system failed.
Until the Augusta building reopens, museum officials are available to conduct programs in the field upon request. The library is still open for patrons at 242 State St., and the state archives are housed at 17 Elkins Lane.
“It’s a sad thing and we wish it didn’t have to be that long,” Sheila McDonald, museum deputy director, told Spectrum News Maine. “We hate being closed and we hate not being available to the public.”

For museum officials, it marks the end of a two-year process of carefully moving 800,000 objects in the collection into storage before work could begin. They also will continue planning for what the renovated museum will look like when it reopens in 2025.That is a longer timeline than was anticipated a year ago, when state museum officials hoped they could reopen the upgraded building to the public — and the thousands of school children who visit each year — by the end of 2023.
When the museum reopens, visitors will see a revamped collection of objects, including a new exhibit featuring two humpback whale skeletons, an adult and a calf, noted Maine State Museum Director Bernard Fishman. In addition, he said another display will showcase 70 Maine quilts.“We’re getting the equivalent of half of a new museum,” Fishman explained. “It’s going to be filled with new things [visitors] haven’t seen before and presented in a new way. There will be a lot that’s new.”
The museum is working to capture the lives of Maine people, he said, and will offer information about a wider group of Mainers to better represent all who live in the state.

With products like Bell trucks and Link-Belt added to our line card, our opportunity to do business with the larger contractors in the Connecticut and western Massachusetts market has grown. We have traditionally done a great job putting equipment in the hands of and supporting consumers of smaller compact machines. However, at times as these, consumers grew their business and had a need for larger machines, we were not always able to satisfy that need. That is certainly no longer the case. With the addition of the Oxford, Conn., and Warwick, R.I., locations our customers are also confident that they can work anywhere in southern New England and be assured of receiving fast and reliable product support.” CEG (All photographs in this article are Copyright 2022 Construction Equipment Guide. “We have recently expanded our product offerings to penetrate other important New England equipment markets. Atlas material handlers have put us in a position to offer a great specialized material handling tracked machine for the demolition and recycling industries that has a proven record overseas and is gaining a great track record in the U.S. “Sewer Equipment of America offers the highest quality sewer equipment in the industry with high-pressure, highvolume truck and trailer mounted sewer jetters combination sewer cleaners in a variety of sizes to meet any of our customer’s needs. This, along with the addition of RAMVAC truck-mounted vacuum excavators, gives us a great product offering for utility contractors and municipalities.”
Acquisitions Align to Make Customers ‘Unstoppable’
The special edition pink Link-Belt Diggin’ for a Cure excavator pays a visit to the Chadwick-BaRoss South Windsor location.

The Chadwick-BaRoss South Windsor location keeps a massive inventory of rubber tracks and attachments. Takeuchi loaders and excavators are a key part of the equipment lineup at Chadwick-BaRoss’ South Windsor location.

Eric Olivieri, general manager of the South Windsor operations, said that the acquisition afforded both companies a symmetry because of Takeuchi equipment. “At KAZ Equipment, we carried Takeuchi in South Windsor and Chadwick-BaRoss carried Takeuchi in Oxford, Conn., Warwick, R.I., and Chelmsford, Mass. Becoming part of Chadwick-BaRoss made perfect sense for our Takeuchi customers by providing an expanded support network.”
Chadwick-BaRoss, this expansion aligns with its recent rebranding initiative to enable customers, who were previously out of reach, to “be unstoppable” in their businesses by better supporting their needs.

“Construction signs are located at the beginning and end of the project for advance warning and sign packages will be set up at each flagger location. A reduced speed limit is in place for full length of the project and state police will be enforcing it.”The 2022 season will focus on the road resurfacing, which will follow tried and trueGuardrailmethods.installation will be done in two phases.“This spring, the existing rail will be removed and/or reset wider than it is now to allow space to rebuild the road,” said LaClair. “All the new rail will be installed after paving the first two lifts of asphalt. We project the new rail installation to begin in August of 2022. A typical day of guardrail installation would be 900 linear feet of rail installed over a 10-hour shift.”

projections show paving to start in June. There is a considerable amount of work that needs to be done prior to any asphalt being paved. We anticipate the 2023 season to include milling in Brattleboro, structure adjustments and rehabs, as well as paving the final lift of asphalt on the entire project. Paving will be followed by the installation of rumble strips and permanent pavement markings.”Workzones surrounding ongoing traffic present unique challenges requiring specialized knowledge and safety from everyone involved in the project.

Resurfacing From Wilmington to Brattleboro Presses Forward
All the signage will be installed after paving the second lift of asphalt, an operation that is likely to begin in August 2022.
“As always, our first priority is the safety of our workers and the traveling public,” said LaClair. “Traffic management is one of the biggest challenges on a project of this size, especially when you consider the amount of commuters, truck traffic and the topography of the job. We will take every precaution to ensure a safe work site. Early detection devices such as message boards and construction signs will be placed to give the traveling public notice of the conditions of the road. Pike has requested a speed reduction throughout the project as well as lane restrictions for oversized loads.
“Nearly all the current signs on the project will be replaced,” said LaClair. “We will also install a new flashing beacon light near the Marlboro elementary school. All the signs being replaced will be salvaged and provided to the state garage as backups in case any damage is done to the new signs in the future. Sign installation will not require any specialized equipment. Typically, a Hilti hammer drill is used to set the breakaways and all posts and signs are installed byPeakhand.”days have many personnel on site.
For the road work itself, Pike Industries will be bringing in standard equipment such as rollers, pavers, loaders and other pieces of iron. CEG (All photos courtesy of Pike Industries and VTrans.)
