new for 2021: the BOOKISH collection I’m so pleased to share my new “Bookish” Collection with you! This collection was born out of the every day joy I’ve been enjoying this spring that is picking up a book and reading in this sunshine.

After the long, hard winter, it felt right to treat myself with kindness AND support a local independent bookseller by stocking up my to be read shelf with exciting new books. Slipping into a different world each day through the pages of a book has brought me such happiness! I hope that feeling comes across through this new pattern and the cards and goodies that accompany it.

One of my very first card designs a decade ago was book themed, so it feels a bit like coming home again to dig into and be inspired by my lifelong love of books. The part of me that loves paper and ink and printing and words started with a book in my hands and grew to include snail mail and cards and stationery, too. I hope you love this collection, but even more I hope it inspires you to turn the pages of something you can’t put down, or even read a book that changes your life.

the wreath collection I started drawing wreaths in my sketchbook in the summer of 2020. I spent many hours in the woods that summer, desperate for time outside of the four walls of my house and hungry for quiet and beauty. That time gave me new eyes for the mysterious and stately evergreens of my beautiful Washington State.

As the summer slipped into fall, I painted evergreen wreaths on old books. As the rain set in, I picked up my iPad to experiment with wreaths in different shapes. I love the way it feels to draw these wreaths. There’s something comforting in their symmetry. I find symbolism of hope in the way they stretch like roots or branches, reaching for something.

Throughout history, evergreen wreaths have symbolized strength. The trees they come from survive even the harshest winters. In Greco-Roman times, wreaths were used to adorn the wise and victorious. In faith traditions, round wreaths symbolize eternal life with their unending, unbroken circle.

And so, in the middle of this cold winter, in this dark, uncertain time we still find ourselves, I give you this collection of wreaths. The words they encircle speak of hope and fortitude, the promise of joy to come, and recognition of the fight it takes to keep going. While their style is different than the clean, bold typography of my previous collections, they are very much a continuation of this conversation about our vital need for hope that I’ve been having for many years.

My first introduction to the visual arts was an oil painting class. When I was a child in Florida, I took weekly lessons in a strip mall art supply store with a group of lovely elderly women. Even now I can remember the way the paint smelled, the joy of mixing colors for the first time, and the sound of the easy listening radio station that always played in the background. I came home each week with arms and hands covered in paint, with ruined clothes, and with a happy heart. I loved everything about it. One of my early paintings still hangs in my parents home. In design school and in my career thereafter, I didn’t think there was space for painting. As a graphic designer, letterpress printer, and business owner, I didn’t make the time, and painting was nothing but a distant memory.

While preparing to take a sabbatical for the month of December 2020, I ordered a variety of brushes and gouache paints for myself. I found myself lost in a fog and lost for words throughout that difficult year, and yearned for a different way to express myself. Between the end of November 2020 and the middle of January 2021, I completed over 50 paintings. From quick tree studies like these, to multiple day landscapes on canvas, I found a new voice with a brush in my hand. It will take some time to discover exactly how this new art form fits into my current work, but this trio of new cards is one answer to that question.

I find so much comfort in the quiet strength and natural beauty of the trees outside my window. They reach for the sky and keep on reaching. Even when they fall, they give comfort. Their logs become places for us to rest.

Their stumps and rings show us the mysteries of their age and all they’ve seen.

They become home to mushrooms, and new trees often grow from them.

I hope that their visual poetry brings emphasis to the words of encouragement on these new cards.

about me Constellation & Co. is a letterpress greeting card company that uses the power of words and the magic of snail mail to connect people and make us all feel less alone. C&Co. is owned and operated by me, Sara McNally. My online shop is home to unique gift items and cards that will make you laugh and/or cry. Each one of my cards and stationery gifts is printed, packaged, and sent on their way from my home and basement HQ here in Seattle.

My line of cards and gifts are inspired the four seasons, by my beautiful home state of Washington, and by sweet, close relationships. Weddings, birthdays, holidays, etc. are important because of the people we share them with. Those people make life’s hardest times survivable as well. The cards I write are built for sharing joy and holding our loved ones close in the middle of pain. My lived experiences, and those of the people I love– infertility, new beginnings, sudden grief, adoption, saying goodbyes and choosing belligerent hope–make my line about more than just paper, but about people.

I write cards for feelings that are too big for a card. I write cards for the situations that are too complicated for words. I strive to put words to the love that brings color to our lives. I write cards for exactly you, and exactly how goofy or awkward or sincere you feel today. I use typography, ink, paper, and pressure to say the things that shouldn’t go unsaid. I have a lot of things to say.

I gather up all those words and present them to the world (and to you) as something to slip into an envelope and put in the mail.

It’s both as simple and complex as that; the complexity of being a human, impressed upon a simple, folded sheet of paper. I want to make you laugh. I want to make you feel known. I want to help you share love. If your relationships grow because you sent a card, my purpose is fulfilled.

This thing really is my dream. From recession unemployment blues, to my first studio, to buying and refurbishing my first press, to my first wholesale catalog, to our first trade show, to becoming a mom, to opening my brick & mortar shop, to closing it in the middle of a pandemic and pivoting to working from home and selling online, to today… for better or worse, I’m living the dream I’d saved for someday, right now. I hope you’ll order some cards and invite us into your life. I truly believe we’re all better when we’re working together. But beyond words on paper, I want most of all to share a moment of gratitude with you. Every hard-fought, beautiful, complicated, challenging, and delightful day of this life is a gift. PAYMENT & CREDIT ACCOUNTS All orders sent by email or phone must be submitted with a credit card number and a current copy of your Resale Certificate or other tax exempt paperwork. Your credit card will be charged on ship date. Credit accounts (Net 15 or Net 30) are available pending credit approval. E-mail us for our credit application. We also accept check or Paypal payments by request. We do not typically accept consignment requests.

SHIPPING All orders received through our website receive flat rate shipping of $8!

We typically ship wholesale orders via USPS Priority, UPS, or FedEx (whatever is cheapest and fastest). We are happy to customize your shipping options (rush shipping, local pick-up, etc.), but please let us know at the time of your order. All non-flat rate shipping costs will be assessed and added to your invoice by package size/weight. Most orders ship within 5-7 days, but larger orders may be subject to a production time of 2-3 weeks.

RETURNS/REFUNDS If items arrive defective or damaged, please contact us within 7 days.

Once we’ve heard from you, we’ll send you a pre-paid shipping label to return the item at our cost. When you return the damaged item(s), let us know if you would like a replacement item, a credit on your account for a future purchase, or a full refund for the purchase price of the item(s).

PRINTING Many of our paper products are letterpress printed on our Heidelberg Windmill, Chandler & Price platen press, or our 20th Century Reliance iron handpress. We print with a combination of methods, including: photopolymer plates, hand-set wood and lead type, linoleum cuts, and wood engravings. Due to the handmade nature of this printing process, slight variations in ink coverage are to be expected and are part of why we all love letterpress!

EARTH FRIENDLY PRACTICES Our cards and envelopes are primarily sourced from French Paper. French is powered by fully renewable hydroelectric generators installed in 1922 (and saving over one million barrels of fossil fuel to date). Several of our products are printed on “chipboard,” a 100% post-consumer waste reclaimed paper stock. We clean our presses with reduced volatile organic compound (VOC) emission solvents and recycle our ink waste as much as possible.
