BRIEFLY ENTERTAINING Exotic animal preserve to hold fundraiser

Wyclef, Timberland team up on eco-friendly boots CONCORD, N.H. — Wyclef Jean and The Timberland Co. are teaming up to sell eco-friendly footwear and support reforestation of the singer’s native Haiti.

Jean, who achieved fame with The Fugees before going solo, collaborated with the New Hampshire-based footwear and apparel company on a 16-boot collection going on sale in November. Timberland also will sell T-shirts designed by Haitian children, and a new line of organic shirts and hats will be sold at Jean’s concerts, with a cut of the profits going to Jean’s Yele Haiti foundation.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Jean says he hopes the partnership will inspire children and put a new face on his homeland. The partnership is part of Timberland’s Earthkeepers program, which promotes environmental and social activism.

Where any dog can learn any trick

NEW YORK — Maybe you don’t worry about spoiling your new manicure before your nails can dry. But Anne does.

Maybe you don’t have a problem with company leaving your toilet seat up or, worse, forgetting to flush. Kimberly does.

Fortunately, they are both owners of dogs that, with the right kind of training can lend a helpful paw.

Thanks to pet trainer extraordinaire Zak George, that’s about to happen on SuperFetch, which puts the “can” in canine when it premieres Saturday at 7 p.m. on Animal Planet. It’s educational and fun, for dogs and humans alike.

“SuperFetch is the first show that doesn’t focus on fixing a broken dog,” says George. “We look for people who are interested in interacting with their dog, taking their relationship with their dog to the next level, and making their already great dog even greater.”

On the first episode, George steps in to craft a training plan for Anne and her English cocker spaniel, Oliver.

Oliver learns how to save her manicure by plucking cash from her purse to pay the manicurist and, when he and Anne arrive home, grabbing the house keys to open their front door.

Then Kimberly’s Bernese mountain dog, Bear, learns how to drop the toilet seat and flush on command whenever Kimberly’s boyfriend or brother has failed to do so.

George says the key to the process is making it fun for the dog, which means identifying the “currency” the dog values most: snacks for a job well done, or maybe camouflaging the learning process as a familiar game the dog already loves.

“Dogs want to please us, but they also want to know what’s in it for them,” George notes.

It’s basic problem-solving: You break the trick into steps, and if you can make each step amusing, your dog (and you) will be all the more motivated.

“I like teaching a dog how to think, and more importantly, I like teaching the parents how to think and how to interact with their dog,” says George.

Earlier this year, author J.K. Rowling was given one of France’s highest honors when she was inducted into the Legion of Honor by French President Nicolas Sarkozy at the Elysee presidential palace. No surprise, considering the fact that Rowling’s beloved Harry Potter books have sold more than 400 million copies and been translated into 67 languages — not to mention the history-making film adaptations, which collectively have exceeded $5.3 billion in worldwide box office.

Turns out, according to a new book by a speechwriter during the Bush administration, there was talk of honoring the British author with the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom a few years ago but the idea was a non-starter in the White House. The former administration had decision-makers who spoke up to “actually object to giv-

ing the author J.K. Rowling a presidential medal because the Harry Potter books encouraged witchcraft,” writes Matthew Latimer, author of Speech-less: Tales of a White House Survivor.

They gave the same medal to James Cagney and John Wayne without fear of gunfire in the streets, and Charlton Heston got one despite his mixed messages on creationism vs. evolution. My first thought was that Rowling didn’t merit the award because well, it was too big of an honor — but, really, is she less deserving than honorees Julia Child, Rita Moreno or Richard Petty?

Many supporters celebrate Rowling’s philanthropy and point out that her works have energized young readers in an era when parents had given up hope that their youngsters would willingly set aside video games and television remotes so they could read a 759-page tome such as Harry Potter and Deathly Hallows.

Tigers for Tomorrow, an exotic animal preserve in DeKalb County, is holding a Hot Rod Roar fundraiser on Oct. 3 at Dreamfield Productions, a 40acre facility with an outdoor amphitheater near Collinsville.

The event is an open car show, said Susan Steffens, founder of Tigers for Tomorrow, which means anything with wheels is welcome.

“We’re hoping to have some unique stuff,” Steffens said. “This is the first time we’ve done a fundraiser like this.”

Along with the car show, the event will also have a raffle and silent auction. Two cubs will also be on location, and the preserve will be open after the fundraiser.

Vendor space for the event is still available, Steffens said.

Registration for cars is from 8 a.m.12 p.m. and costs $25. The top 10 cars will be chosen and awarded at 2 p.m., after which Anniston rock band McPherson Struts will take the stage.

Michael Jackson was healthy

LOS ANGELES — Michael Jackson’s arms were covered with punctures, his face and neck were scarred and he had tattooed eyebrows and lips, but he wasn’t the sickly skeleton of a man portrayed by tabloids, according to his autopsy report obtained by The Associated Press.

In fact, the Los Angeles County coroner’s report shows Jackson was a fairly healthy 50-year-old before he died of an overdose. His 136 pounds were in the acceptable range for a 5-foot-9 man. His heart was strong with no sign of plaque buildup. And his kidneys and most other major organs were normal.

Still, Jackson had health issues: arthritis in the lower spine and some fingers, and mild plaque buildup in his leg arteries. Most serious was his lungs, which the autopsy report said were chronically inflamed and had reduced capacity that might have left him short of breath.

However, according to the document, the lung condition was not serious enough to be a direct or contributing cause of death.

“His overall health was fine,” said Dr. Zeev Kain, chairman of the anesthesiology department at the University of California, Irvine, who reviewed a copy of the autopsy report for the AP. Kain was not involved in the autopsy. The full autopsy report has not been released publicly, but the AP obtained a copy.

Jackson died at his rented Los Angeles mansion June 25 after his personal physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, administered the anesthetic propofol and two other sedatives to get the chronic insomniac to sleep, court documents state.

Propofol, normally a surgical anesthetic used in operating rooms, acts as a respiratory depressant and requires constant monitoring, Murray told police he left the room to use the bathroom and phone records show he also made calls for 47 minutes around the time Jackson encountered problems. When Murray realized Jackson was unresponsive, he began frantic efforts to revive him, but Jackson never regained consciousness and was declared dead at the University of California, Los Angeles Medical Center.

Ga. museum displays da Vinci sculptures

The coroner’s office announced last month that Jackson’s death was a homicide caused by “acute propofol intoxication,” with the other sedatives listed as a contributing factor. They said the standard of care for administering propofol was not met and the recommended equipment for patient monitoring, precision dosing and resuscitation was missing.

Murray is the target of what Los Angeles police term a manslaughter investigation. The decision on criminal charges will come from the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office. Murray has been interviewed twice by police.

Except for a brief video posted to YouTube, Murray has not spoken publicly since Jackson’s death.

In the video, he said: “I told the truth and I have faith the truth will prevail.” Murray’s attorney, Edward Chernoff, previously has said nothing Murray gave Jackson “should have” killed him.

Jackson was declared dead a little more than two hours after paramedics were called. Evidence of the desperate struggle to save the star were evident on his body.

He had chest bruising and cracked ribs from CPR, and a balloon pump was inserted into his heart to try to restart it, according to the autopsy report.

Jackson’s body was taken by helicopter to the coroner’s office where the following morning Chief Medical Examiner Lakshmanan Sathyavagiswaran and Dr. Christopher Rogers ordered a toxicology screening to look for drugs in his system.

Aside from propofol and the sedatives, the only substances found in his system were the local anesthetic, Lidocaine, sometimes used to numb injection sites and ephedrine, a commonly used resuscitation stimulant.

The autopsy findings cut off a potential defense for Murray — that Jackson hid serious preexisting conditions that increased the risk of death from the drugs he willingly took. Even if he did hide a condition such as his weakened lungs, a prosecutor could argue Murray should have detected the condition before administering drugs, said Michael Brennan, a clinical law professor at the University of Southern California who specializes in criminal defense.

“A doctor has some obligation to know what his patient’s physical condition is,” Brennan said. “The doctor is going to try to substantiate whatever the patient told him ... and not simply rely on a patient’s descriptions of his physical condition.”

ATLANTA — Leonardo da Vinci once spent nearly two decades creating a 26-foot sculpture of a horse to honor a royal Italian family, only to have the plaster masterpiece destroyed by French soldiers. The Italian artist best known for his paintings and inventions rather than sculpting abilities created more than a dozen sculptures in his lifetime, many of which have disappeared.

A rare U.S. exhibit of the remaining few sculptures and dozens of sketches by da Vinci and his contemporaries will open Tuesday at Atlanta’s High Museum of Art, featuring art never seen outside of Europe.

The exhibit will remain in Atlanta until February, when a modified version will travel to the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles. It includes pieces from the Vatican’s art collection, the Louvre in Paris and the royal collection at Windsor Castle in England.

“One of the marketing lines that fell on the cutting room floor was, ‘Approved by the queen and blessed by the Pope,”’ said the museum’s deputy director, Philip Verre.

The centerpiece is a nearly 30-foot recreation of da Vinci’s destroyed horse statue, which towers over the plaza outside the High. Inside the museum are the meticulous drawings and anatomical notes he made of the Sforza family’s horses in hopes of perfectly capturing the animals’ motion.

He even mapped out the machines he needed to invent to cover the giant plaster horse in bronze and how to transport it once it was completed. Those plans never came to fruition, though, because the bronze intended for the statue was used to make cannons for a war with France. When the French army invaded Milan, the plaster horse was destroyed by soldiers.

The exhibit also includes three pieces believed to have been sculpted in part by da Vinci, though his name was never put on any of them, said exhibit curator Gary Radke, a Syracuse University humanities professor.

Those are a silver sculptured panel depicting the beheading of John the Baptist, a small bronze horse and a terra-cotta angel relief.

The exhibit also features a marble statue of a bearded prophet by Donatello, the first time a life-size sculpture by the artist has ever visited the U.S. It also includes three bronze statues of John the Baptist preaching to a Levite and a Pharisee by Giovanni Francesco Rustici, a student of da Vinci who was influenced by his teacher’s work.

LOS ANGELES — Miranda Lambert is chatting happily about her new album, Revolution, while seated in a booth in a deserted hotel restaurant a few hours before a performance at the Los Angeles County Fair.

At one point, she starts hemming and hawing about her abilities as a singer — even though she’s one of the Country Music Association’s nominees for best female vocalist for its upcoming awards — sputtering out with halting pride something about the confidence she thinks is evident on the new record.

About that time, country singer Blake Shelton strides in and slides his 6-foot-5 frame into the booth next to that of his 5-4 girlfriend of the last two years, and starts playfully giving her grief for her selfdeprecating attitude.

“She’s never had that much confidence in her singing, which is odd to me, because she’s one of the standouts, in my opinion,” says Shelton, who has racked up several No. 1 hits of his own, including “Austin,” “Some Beach” and, last year, “Home,” on which he was joined by Lambert.

“She’s one of the ones,” he says, “that when you’re watching (country music awards shows), when it’s Miranda’s turn to come out and perform, you can almost take a deep breath of relief knowing that, ‘OK, this one’s going to make us look good.

This one’s not going to sound (embarrassing) on national television and make the whole country music industry a joke.’ Miranda’s one of the ones that brings credibility to us, as a writer and a singer, and is unique.”

She pauses.

“We’re going to do more interviews together,” she says with a giggle. “I like this.”

Lambert’s evolution as a singer and songwriter is apparent on Revolution, for which she wrote or co-wrote 11 of the 15 songs. Many reach beyond her “Kerosene,” “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” and “Gunpowder & Lead” image as country’s most volatile woman to show there’s also a sensitive heart, and a sense of humor, lurking beneath the hair-trigger surface.

“I feel like I was getting dangerously close to being shoved in that box of ‘She’s that crazy girl who kills people in her songs,”’ she says. “That’s fine, but there’s so much more to me than that; there’s so much more to the great music that I love than one song.

“You listen to Merle Haggard and there’s everything from gospel to songs about his mama and songs about being in prison,” she continues.

“Nobody says he only sings about prison, or he only sings about cheating. On this record, it’s the first time I really have a lot about every aspect of life, not just the get-even part of me.”

She points out that for the new album, “I wrote a song called ‘Love Song,’ which is so out of character for me,” she says. “I’m always the one singing the hate songs. I guess just being in love and being settled a little kind of opened up my mind to go there, so why not talk about it?”

Lambert wrote “Love Song” with Shelton and two other writers and it’s disarmingly tender: “Everybody always sings about it/How they’re never gonna live without it/We don’t even have to talk about it/’Cause we’re living it out.”

“I’m not the crazy, wild-eyed kid I was for ‘Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,’” she says. “It’s just that life experience sets in. Of course, I’m still a kid: I’m 25. I’ve learned a lot, but I have a lot more to learn.”

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — The Grateful Dead Archive has taken another step in its long strange trip, from the University of CaliforniaSanta Cruz library to its own Web site, The Virtual Terrapin Station.

One of the most popular bands in rock ’n’ roll history will have its legacy including photos, show tickets, toys, posters and recordings preserved online thanks to a federal grant. The Grateful Dead Archive, housed at the McHenry Library, has been awarded $615,175 by the Institute of Museum and Library Services to photograph and scan collection images and upload them. The public will be able to access the online collection and offer fans the opportunity to contribute to the collection by digitally submitting photos.

Christine Bunting, head of special collections and archives at McHenry, said the school will use the grant over 2 ½ years to archive what she said is the world’s largest public collection of Dead memorabilia.

“The ultimate goal of making the archive digital is that everyone will have a Grateful Dead experience,” Bunting said.

Allowing the public to contribute was inspired by the band’s spirit of openness, according to Bunting.

“The idea for the Web site came from the sharing of Grateful Dead music and keeping up with their tradition,” Bunting said.

The extensive collection consumes nearly 600 feet and includes thousands of pictures, documents and pieces of memorabilia, Bunting said. Archived materials like band member journals show the band’s creativity and influence in contemporary music history. The archives also contain paraphernalia related to the band’s extensive social network of devoted fans and the group’s highly unusual and successful business ventures.

Two-thirds of all the Dead material held by the school was donated by surviving band members in 2008, according to Bunting. The rest came from the fans known as Deadheads.

UCSC was one of 51 institutions nationwide that received National Leadership Grants from the Institute of Museum and Library Services this year totaling nearly $18 million, according to the organization’s Web site.

“This is a first for the UCSC library, and the grant gives us the opportunity to create a new model for Web-based archives that will include traditional materials from our Grateful Dead Archive,” said Librarian Virginia Steel. “Along with materials contributed by scholars and Deadheads around the world.”

“Betcha Gon’ Know,” the disc’s opening track, sets the tone as Carey compares the seriousness of her broken heart to news programs like 60 Minutes, 20/20 and The Oprah Winfrey Show.

Carey produced and wrote the majority of the album with Christopher “Tricky” Stewart and Terius “TheDream” Nash — and those hitmakers add their own touch to “Imperfect Angel” without overdoing it.

“Ribbon,” which bumps with southern flavor, is radio-friendly, showcasing The-Dream and Tricky’s signature sound. As does “Standing O,” with its addictive hook.

Imperfect Angel, though helmed by The-Dream and Tricky, still maintains a classic Mariah sound.

Staley loss lingers on AIC’s disc Alice in Chains Black Gives Way To Blue

Alice in Chains fans will never get over Layne Staley. To them, the iconic Seattle band died along with its enigmatic lead singer, who suffered a fatal drug overdose in 2002.

In many ways it’s true — Staley was irreplaceable — but the textured bluesy metal he created with guitarist Jerry Cantrell is intact on AIC’s first effort since his death, Black Gives Way To Blue.

Cantrell’s guitar playing is still a thing of beauty, utilizing stark acoustic guitar against hard riffs and cutting solos, and new member William DuVall, who plays guitar and shares vocals with Cantrell, thankfully never succumbs to the temptation of trying to mimic Staley.

Cantrell and DuVall attempt to answer any criticism on disc opener “All Secrets Known” with the chorus, “There’s no going back to the place we started from.”

On the heavy side are “Check My

Brain,” the diverse “A Looking In View,” and midtempo cuts “Lessons Learned” and “Private Hell.”

They also offer dark acoustic tracks in “Your Decision” and the eastern-flavored “When The Sun Rose Again.”

The disc is strong throughout and reminiscent of the 1992 classic “Dirt” — but something is indeed missing.

Hammond explores divine affection Fred Hammond Love Unstoppable

Just when you think Hammond has fully mined his expressions of love for God, he comes out with another album full of treasures.

On Love Unstoppable, Hammond’s high-ringing tenor, circuitous phrasing and jazzy chord changes are applied to joyous, uptempo praise tunes and the intimate, slow-burning worship songs that his listeners have come to appreciate in his nearly 30 years in the industry.

Thematically, the album could be a “Vol. 2” to Somethin’ ’Bout Love released in 2004. “Awesome God” is a funky send up that sets

the tone, and the gentle refrains of “You’re Good” show Hammond cozily in worship leader mode.

CHECK THIS TRACK OUT: On “Lost in You Again,” Hammond again welcomes us into the intimacy of his private prayers. The song’s slightly off-kilter rhythms make it sound like a serenade.

Paramore maturing on their new CD Paramore brand new eyes

Grammy-nominated upstarts Paramore have been labeled everything from punk to emo since their breakout 2007 disc Riot.

Labels seem to miss the point entirely with Paramore. They just make good music — and their third effort, brand new eyes, is another burst of youthful energy and infectious to the core.

Lead singer Haley Williams — a mere 20 years old — has a Gwen Stefani-like charisma and she carries the band by being everything Kelly Clarkson is trying to be and Stefani used to be. And she can sing, too.

Josh Farro (guitar/vocals), Zac Farro (drums), Jeremy Davis (bass) and Taylor York (guitar) play with reckless energy and set a great tone for Williams’ sassy lyrics.

The disc opens on a nice 1-2 punch with “Careful,” where Williams shouts “The truth never set me free/So I did it myself,” and lead single “Ignorance,” which is already climbing the charts.

Soaring tracks dominate here, including a crowd-ready “Brick By Boring Brick” and the unapologetic fistpumpers “Feeling Sorry” and “Where The Lines Overlap.”

But it’s the lighter moments that showcase Paramore’s emerging diversity. “Playing God” is a dose of pop-rock bliss, and the acoustic ballads “Exception” and “Misguided Ghosts” prove that Williams can do a lot more than simply wail.

Paramore is confidently maturing, and it shows on brand new eyes.

CHECK THIS TRACK OUT: Williams proclaims “We’re just getting started” on the aptly titled rocker “Looking Up.” With a record this fun, here’s to hoping she’s not kidding.

“I should crack you right in your forehead,” Mariah Carey sings on the breakup tune “It’s a Wrap.”

The song, on her latest CD, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, finds a hungover Carey kicking her lover to the curb with particularly harsh words.

“Another early morning, and you walk in like it’s nothing ... ain’t no doughnuts, ain’t coffee,” she sings with attitude in her signature high-pitch tone. “Let me take a breath and regain my composure, told you more time, if you (expletive) up it’s over.”

But even though she’s spitting venom, Carey’s cooing on the doowop sounding song is so sensuous and sweet, even the song’s intended target will remain under her spell — as will her listeners.

Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel is an exceptional album that is about love — being in it, out of it, over it and trying to reach it. While the subjects are tried and true, they are never tired, thanks to Carey’s approach, which mixes a good dose of humor and wit with her multi-

A bouncy, female-centric portrait of a misfit teenager finding her place in the world, Whip It isn’t the most original movie you’ll see this year. But first-time director Drew Barrymore illustrates an edict which vastly more experienced filmmakers would be wise to follow: If you surround yourself with a stellar cast and invest the proceedings with heart and energy, you’ll earn the audience’s attention.

Ellen Page, in yet another variation of her Juno persona, plays Bliss Cavendar, a hipper-than-thou teen living in a dead-end Texas town. When her prim-andproper mother (Marcia Gay Harden) takes her to Austin for a shopping trip, Bliss learns about a world that she knew nothing about previously: Roller derby.

A few days later, she sneaks back to Austin with her best friend (Alia Shawkat) and attends a match. The women she meets there — tomboyish and independent-minded just like herself — are an inspiration.

Before long, she earns a place on “The Hurl Scouts” and is sneaking off regularly for practice and matches.

(The film’s title refers to a particularly effective move used on the roller derby rink.)

Based on a young adult novel called Roller Girl by University of Texas grad Shauna Cross, Whip It plugs into an intriguing, real-life milieu: The roller derby leagues that sprang up in Austin in the early 2000s, and inspired a derby renaissance across the country.

The most interesting aspects of the script (also by Cross) focus on the women who populate this oddball

sport. We meet a single mother who goes by the stage name Maggie Mayhem (Kristen Wiig); after elbowing, bumping, grinding and skating on the rink, she rushes home to care for her son. Barrymore plays a delightful klutz named Smashlee Simpson.

Most compelling of all is Juliette Lewis as Iron Maven, Bliss’ chief rival, a woman in her late 30s who has struggled for years to find something she was good at — and who now fiercely resists sharing her spotlight with anyone.

Less successful are the exchanges between Bliss and her mother, and the all-too-predictable central plot device: Will Bliss be able to keep her derby life secret from her parents, or will everything be exposed on the night of the teen beauty pageant in which her mother has begged her to compete? Take nothing away from Harden and Page, who invest these scenes with conviction.

Harden, especially, deserves props for transforming a paper-thin conceit into a flesh-and-blood character.

But there’s no escaping the fact that we’ve seen this same conflict played out hundreds of times before.

Fortunately, the saving graces here are many: Barrymore films the roller derby scenes with evident joy (the expert editing is by Dylan Tichenor, who was nominated for an Oscar for There Will Be Blood). She also does a surprisingly savvy job bringing to life the weird-andproud-of-it vibe of Austin — all the more impressive considering that most of the film was shot in Michigan.

And everywhere you turn, there’s another sly, completely unexpected supporting performance. Watch out for Andrew Wilson (Luke and Owen’s older brother), who plays The Hurl Scouts’ coach. Wilson never once condescends to his character’s zeal — this may be one of the most affectionate portraits of coaching ever seen.

In the months after the zombie apocalypse, brought on by a virulent mutation of Mad Cow Disease, America has ceased to be.

The few survivors don’t use names but hometowns as their monikers. They travel the Interstates in sturdy GM SUVs, loaded with weapons, looking for refuge. They listen to heavy metal — “Don’t Fear the Reaper,” of course. In this United States of Zombieland, all they want are “the little things” — like Twinkies.

Zombieland is the funniest zombie movie since Shawn of the Dead, funnier even than Fido. This is a 28 Days Later played for laughs — lots of them, endless jokes, one-liners and sight gags.

That nebbish’s nebbish Jesse Eisenberg (Adventureland) plays our narrator — a survivor not because he’s tough but because he’s smart. He lives by a long set of post-zombie rules, rules that flash on the screen each time he applies one to some life-threatening situation — “Rule 1, Cardio.” Run, because “the first ones to go were the fatties,” “Rule 3, Beware of Bathrooms,” and “Rule 17, Don’t be a hero.”

The kid is making his way home to Columbus, Ohio, where he grew up.

“Columbus,” that’s what the snarling zombie-killer (Woody Harrelson) driving an Escalade that he has painted Dale Earnhardt’s No. 3 on, calls him. “Tallahassee” is all action — guns and baseball bats and lawn-care implements, all employed killing zombies as he prowls empty stores looking for the last Twinkie in Zombieland.

These two mismatched companions run up on some survivor sisters — Wichita (Emma Stone, all Zooey bangs and too much makeup) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin), but “trust issues” stand in the way of their traveling as a quartet.

Director Ruben Fleischer and writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, complete unknowns, pepper this script with snark and wit. Black humor flows as thick and black as the blood the zombies spurt and the bile the zombies vomit.

It’s still just a dumb zombie movie, but at least in Zombieland, they know “Living Dead” is the biggest joke of all.

Brit-comic Ricky Gervais stakes a serious claim to the title “the British Albert Brooks” with The Invention of Lying, his droll, witty and thoughtful comedy about the thing that really makes the world go round.

On an Earth in which “the human race has never evolved the ability to tell a lie,” Gervais plays the guy who discovers fibs, fiction, exaggerations, little white lies, whoppers to get what you want and the biggest lie of all.

And that discovery may (or may not) change the world and make it a better place.

As Mark, he’s a screenwriter on this alternate Earth. He’s failing at the simple task of turning history (there is no fiction) into something a reader can recite to an audience on TV or in theaters. There are no actors. Pretending to be someone you’re not would be a lie, wouldn’t it?

Mark’s a “loser,” as his secretary (Tina Fey)

can’t help but blurt out and his fellow dapper writer (Rob Lowe) loves saying to one and all.

And that doesn’t escape the notice of his beautiful but shallow blind date, Anna (Jennifer Garner, radiant). Things get off to a swinging start when she admits to masturbating just before their date and adds “I’m not really looking forward to tonight in general.” She judges him by his appearance and financial state, spilling the beans about what (some) women really want.

Mark is pretty downtrodden until that day when he figures out he can tell the bank clerk he has more money coming to him than his account balance suggests. The floodgates are opened, and suddenly he can lie his way back into the screenwriting job he just lost, can fake his way to confidence, wealth and success, and even find ways to convince his loner neighbor (Jonah Hill) that he’s not a lumpy loser who should kill himself.

This might have been a 10-minute sketch stretched out to movie length. But then the movie gets to the biggest lie of all, that favorite British bugaboo, religion. The Invention of Lying morphs into a different movie, a high-minded comedy, intellectual, even. The characters explore just what that one lie can do to help the human race, or limit it.

How do you make a movie about the country’s current economic crisis and actually get people to see it? Two obstacles most obviously arise: illustrating such a potentially dry subject in a compelling way, and persuading audiences to pay money for information they can get at home — and feel depressed about — for free. Having Michael Moore as our guide certainly helps. Twenty years after he took on General Motors with his powerful debut Roger & Me, the proud provocateur is taking aim at the same sorts of targets with his latest documentary. It’s vintage Moore, reflecting both the filmmaker’s fondness for manipulation and his strengths as a showman. As he did with Sicko and Fahrenheit 9/11, he typically oversimplifies a complicated topic to make it accessible for the broadest possible audience, but he also tells moving stories of specific families who’ve lost their homes to foreclosure.

With a big assist from his crack team of archivists, he brilliantly juxtaposes 1950s footage of wholesome guys and gals extolling the virtues of capitalism with all-too familiar shots of contemporary hardship. But we also see home movies of a young, towheaded Moore, excitedly visiting Wall Street from his home in Flint, Mich., which will become even more relevant when Moore returns to the economic vortex in the film’s final, dramatic moments. In making the argument that capitalism is evil, Moore is all over the place, and he doesn’t even make the vaguest attempt at finding balance journalistically. But at least he’s equal opportunity, blaming politicians on both sides of the aisle for allowing the influence of Wall Street to lead us into the troubles we’re in today.

Former Knox series head making transition news

Patricia Smith thinks Calhoun County does an exceptional job at entertaining folks.

As the head of the Knox Concert Series for 35 years, she knows a thing or two about bringing high-quality entertainment acts to the area to give people a reason to get out of the house.

The Knox Concert Series, a nonprofit organization of 350 volunteers, holds four to five performances a year at the 1,200-seat Anniston Performing Arts Center. The series features various artists and groups and exposes schoolchildren to the performing arts through its educational outreach program.

Until her retirement this year, Smith made it her mission to expose the community to the most wide-ranging arts activities that she and her colleagues could.

She talks to The Star about her favorite Knox acts, kids who watch the opera and what it felt like bringing Calhoun County a healthy dose of the finer things.

How’s retirement so far?

I am enjoying my retirement/transition period right here, and I know that I’m anticipating the full retirement after Oct. 1, which is our first concert. Our successors

Why was it time for you to leave your position with the Knox Concert Series?

We’d been talking about succession for at least eight years simply because this is a wonderful organization, and I feel responsible for it on a day-to-day basis and had a

mind for the future. I felt an obligation to make the idea of succession a main idea in my everyday work. The board was aware of that, too, because we’re not getting younger. I realized it was time to fulfill that obligation. I was thrilled when one of our board members talked to Julia Segars, and she was very amenable to considering it. When we talked with her further, she said she would definitely make this part of her efforts in the community for the next however long.

What was your biggest piece of advice for Segars as she assumed the role you held for 35 years?

I don’t think I gave her an important piece of advice (laughs). That may be too compartmentalized. I just say I felt like this is one of this region’s finest cultural and entertainment organizations.

Knox is renowned for its quality and its ability to attract the magnificent volunteers who have created an entity far superior to many with paid staff. They do it because they believe in the value of Knox in their community. There are a lot of very interested and responsible people who are willing to be part of a successful entity that is promoting something as wonderful as the arts. Those people are out there, and they are willing to

help and give 100 percent.

You just have to find them.

Maintaining the quality of the series is the other thing.

We have worked very hard to bring only quality events to this community. I think that sensibility, the people are aware of it and willing to participate.

What was your personal goal while overseeing the Knox Concert Series?

To bring the very best of a variety of genres. To expose the community to the most wide-ranging arts activities that we could. To try and satisfy our pre-conceived notions of what it is we like.

We have those that are based on our familiarity with the form. I don’t enjoy jazz maybe because I don’t understand it, and it is a form you have to understand. The symphony is pretty simple and straightforward. You don’t have to think too much. You can just kick your feet up and enjoy it.

We try to expand our horizons, bring the best that we can, a wide variety of musical opportunities that are available to our community and our stage. That was our service to our community.

Also, to take the children of this community, give them this opportunity that may not be provided by their families or schools. Local individuals stepped in and said we need

www.bamaescapes.com That sounds a little esoteric, but what it really means is that we are in charge of the music of Mozart, Beethoven and Bach. We are in charge of the classics, the things that have endured and that will endure.

At the same time, we have a responsibility to seek out the finest in the culture. We are not in the business of presenting American idols. There is a commercial forum for that.

The Knox Concert Series is not in that business. That’s not what we do. The rationale for presenting musicals, they are the ones that have been around and have staying power and musical credibility.

With the popular attractions that we do, keeping in mind the goal of presenting the finest, usually the artists fall into that category. Ray Charles, Wayne Newton, Julio Iglesias, Wynton Marsalis, Alabama.

They’ve written great music.

That’s our goal. That’s very easy. We know what our mission is for the greater good.

What can the rest of Calhoun County do to continue improving itself as a cultural attraction in Alabama?

I think that considering the climate, that we are doing quite well. When you have an entity of the Knox Concert Series that can maintain its quality, when it can bring classical events and fill a house, knowing when there is no exposure to classical music, I would say that Calhoun Coun-

ty is doing phenomenally. I think that we’re not doing a bad job. Could we do more?

Absolutely.

Why is it important for Calhoun County to put its focus on exposing schoolchildren to the performing arts through its educational outreach programs?

For a child to have the opportunity to experience anything. The arts are a part of our culture. They’re a part of our history. Theoretically, they help us in digesting other areas of our educational opportunities. There are treatises on why the arts are valuable. If for nothing else, it’s something else to expose them to. You look in the mirror, and who are you? You’re somebody who has read good books, been to the movies, been up on the top of Cheaha Mountain. All the things that you are, are the result of your experiences. The arts are certainly a valuable entity in our growth and our logic and thinking, and so any opportunity we have to give vent to a child’s creative processes or merely expose them to something that exists in the world that’s good is absolutely to be sought after. I want my grandchildren to see opera and ballet and know what it is. It’s what I tell the kids at the high school. At least now when people are talking about it, you know what it is. You can say, “I’ve seen an opera, and it ain’t so bad!”

Which acts stand out in your memory as ones you’re particularly proud of?

My memories are connected to the performances and the performers, which is very exciting. I have memories that include a wonderful Russian ballet being performed on a rainy night in Anniston, and us having an almost full house.

That amazes me. Personally, I loved the Helicon Opera performance of “Deflator Mouth.”

I love “The Nutcracker,” particularly when we do it for the children because they are the most fabulous audience.

I thought Henry Mancini not only gave a great concert, but was very personable. I’ve had wonderful pianists that have made me want to jump up in the wrong place and applaud.

Postcards from the Yellow Submarine You can’t buy us love, but if you buy a copy of this game, you won’t feel like a fool on the hill. “The Beatles: Rock Band” aims to please, and it’s not a game that misses much.

We rented a copy of this for the Wii, taking advantage of John Dietrich’s “Rock Band” set up. (Though we gently wept for his plastic guitar after it broke on us.) A day in the life of your average newspaper wage slave leads to many a hard day’s night. While some may think happiness is a warm gun, you’d have to search across the universe to find a game that will make you happier than this (particularly if you love The Beatles.)

Pushing Buttons The story mode follows the lads from their early gigs in Liverpool through the music produced by their psychedelic experimentation. The Beatles is one of those bands that was so prolific, so gifted, that their music blends in, easily taken for granted. “Oh, yeah,” we’d say to ourselves, “They wrote ‘Getting Better,’ too.”

We’d be remiss if we didn’t praise John every little thing about the opening Dietrich animation. Wow. Just, wow. If you’re Pushing Buttons reading this, stop what you’re doing and go look up the opening sequence for “The Beatles: Rock Band” on YouTube.

Go ahead. Did you watch it? See what we mean?

These are images that go together well.

Unlike “Rock Band” or “Rock Band 2,” much of the catalogue of available songs is made playable right off the bat. Although the notion of earning things makes sense in most video games, the “Rock Band” genre is more about the activity and practice aspect than accomplishment.

There’s very little competition inherent in the genre, so forcing players to unlock songs feels kind of pointless.

With “Rock Band: The Beatles,” this is fixed and greatly appreciated.

John is a drummer, and without a working guitar, we could only talk about the drums. The beats were generally not as complex as some found in “Rock Band 2.” Perhaps things get ratcheted up on the expert setting, but we’d be surprised if there were that much difference.

That being said, playing the role of Ringo Starr is quite fun and you really get an appreciation for how well the beats fit into the songs. John’s drummer instincts kicked in and melded quite well with the tracks. In quite a few of the “Rock Band 2” songs, the beats don’t fit in quite as well, almost as though they’re trying to stick out.

As for the beats in “ The Beatles,” there are a lot of 1/16th notes and a lot of the kick pedal. Be ready for a bit of a workout. For the vocals, Dan had to re-learn a couple of things he thought he knew about Beatles songs. In the opening part of “Come Together,” John Lennon really does say “shoot me” over and over. He had also forgotten about some of the random “do-wops” and “oh, yeahs” in some of the songs.

The full track listing may disappoint some fans. The developers included some lesser-known tracks such as “Hey Bulldog” and “Dig a Pony.” As one of our friends pointed out, this was probably to include more songs that had equal parts voice, bass, guitar and drums.

But there will be downloadable albums, according to the game’s Web site. Fans can expect a full listing from “Abbey Road” by the end of October and “Sgt. Pepper” in November.

If you’re into the Beatles, you shouldn’t let this game pass you by. There’s something in the way the developers put the game together that makes gamers and non-gamers alike want to come together and play.

Of course, you’ll have to carry the weight of the Rock Band kit. But it’s definitely something you’ve got to get into your life.

Sirius XM passing $2 royalty fees to subscribers

Listeners of Sirius XM Radio Inc. are getting $2 fees added to their monthly satellite radio bills, in what’s effectively a price increase for consumers.

Sirius XM, whose talk show celebrities include Howard Stern, is passing along performance royalty fees paid to singers, musicians and recording companies.

In approving the deal, the Federal Communications Commission barred the combined company from raising prices for three years. That

means Sirius could only collect the royalty fees through a separate surcharge, which the FCC allowed the company to start charging after a year, or July 29, 2009.

New York-based Sirius began charging customers in August. The company said it started notifying them of the charge by e-mail and postal mail in mid-June.

But tech blogger and commentator Lauren Weinstein found out last weekend that he got dinged for the $2 fee when he looked at his credit card bill. He said he didn’t get any notification from Sirius about the charge beforehand.

Sirius spokesman Patrick Reilly said customers sometimes miss email messages or overlook letters sent to them.

Sirius said customers with lifetime subscriptions, or who subscribe to news, sports and talk radio packages with little music, will not have to pay the fee. Those with annual or multiyear contracts will pay the fee upon renewal of their subscriptions.

Subscribers of the base $12.95 a month package will see $1.98 a month added to their bills. Those who subscribe to a second radio service will see an additional 97-cent fee.

For the first time in five years, the quilts of Gee’s Bend are coming home to Alabama.

“Mary Lee Bendolph, Gee’s Bend Quilts and Beyond,” an exhibit of 13 quilts, 12 framed prints, five sculptures and two quilt mockettes, opens at the Berman Museum of World History on Saturday.

“This is actually pretty big for us,” said Margie Conner, marketing manager for both the Berman and Anniston Museum on Natural History. “These (quilts) have been called some of the most important works of all time.”

Gee’s Bend is a small rural community tucked into a curve in the Alabama River about 30 miles southwest of Selma. It gets its name from Joseph Gee, the first white landowner. For most of its history, Gee’s Bend was a secluded community, surrounded by the river on three sides with one road in and out of town. It was the site of cotton plantations, and after the Civil War, the freed slaves founded an all-black community on the land.

Quilt-making was a necessity for the women of Gee’s Bend, and they developed a distinctive quilting style based on traditional African-American quilts, but with a simplicity reminiscent of Amish quilts and modern arts, according The Quilts of Gee’s

Bend Web site.

This exhibit features the quilts of Mary Lee Bendolph and quilters she has influenced, including her mother, daughter and daughter-in-law. For this opening weekend, some of the quilters will be present at the exhibit to answer questions, make gallery talks and sign books, which will be for sale at the museum. Jackson-

ville State University’s African-American theater group, Th’ Promise, will present a tribute to the quilters by performing the play Gee’s Bend by Elizabeth Gregory Wilder at 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The play, first performed by the Alabama Shakespeare Festival in 2007, tells the story of a family of quilters in Gee’s Bend from the 1930s2002.

“I read it and loved the language, loved what it said and loved the use of gospel songs,” said Susan McCain, director of the production. “It’s a great opportunity for people of Alabama to learn about their history. National galleries are showing these pieces and yet so many people in Alabama don’t realize it.”

On Sunday, patrons can bring a lunch and picnic on the museum lawn and then attend an event where they can listen to the compilation albums, How We Got Over: Sacred Songs of Gee’s Bend. At 2 p.m. there will be a documentary screening of The Quilts of Gee’s Bend, followed by a question and answer session with the quilters.

“We’re going to make a nice weekend of it and make the ladies feel welcome here in Anniston,” Conner said.

Along with the quilts, sculptures by Alabama artists Thornton Dial and Lonnie Holly will also be on exhibit.

Because of the delicate nature of the quilts, no food or drink will be allowed in the lobby, and photography of the quilts is not allowed.

Play character offers a quick guide in manners

Etiquette guru Emily Post wrote in 1922, “Courtesy demands that you, when you are a guest, shall show neither annoyance or disappointment — no matter what happens. If you neither understand nor care for dogs or children, and both insist on climbing all over you, you must seemingly like it; just as you must be amiable and polite to your fellow guests, even though they be of all the people on earth the most detestable to you.”

It seems that Sheridan Whiteside, the lead character in George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart’s 1939 comedy The Man Who Came to Dinner never quite got around to reading any of Post’s advice.

In the play, Whiteside is an obnoxious New York City radio personality who slips on a patch of ice outside the Ohio home of Ernest and Harriet Stanley.

Though Whiteside was only supposed to be a dinner guest, his stay is extended when a doctor orders him to stay at the Stanley home until his injured hip is healed.

Rick Gwin, who plays Whiteside in Jacksonville State University’s production of The Man Who Came to Dinner, helps us compare Whiteside and Post’s views on etiquette. PETS Emily Post: Never ask whether you may bring a pet along on a visit. Your host and hostess may be great dog-lovers, but they will probably not want a strange dog who may or may not get along with their own dog, and whose manners may or may not be the best.

Sheridan Whiteside: Bring in as many as possible, particularly things like penguins, octopi and cockroaches.

BEING A GUEST Post: No one, with the exception of closest friends and immediate family, should ever be an ‘unexpected visitor.’

Therefore do not make a visit without making your intentions know, and agree to a time convenient for both of you.

Whether it is easy or not, you must conform to the habits of the family with whom you are staying. You take your meals at their hours, you eat what is put before you.

Whiteside: (When a guest), invite as many people as you can and make sure

you choose the menu yourself. I like my Crockfield Home for Convicts to come in shackles and chains.

INSULTS Post: There is no excuse for remarks of that nature, and you should make that clear. Every time you participate in ethnic, racial or other personally insulting conversations, whether comments are directly derogatory or said in the form of a joke, you are practicing a form of intolerance. This is not only extremely poor manners, it is implied acceptance of bigotry and prejudice. There is no place for this in your conversation or in our world.

Whiteside: I can curse anyone who gets in my way and not feel an ounce of guilt about it. I call my nurse and say she has the touch of a sex-starved cobra.

GOSSIP AND GETTING INVOLVED IN OTHERS’ AFFAIRS Post: Conversation should not be about someone else, especially in a group, even a group of close friends.

Whiteside: I have my finger in everybody’s pie, because I’m the most intelligent and most qualified of anyone there.

And by the far the most famous.

COMMUNICATIONS Post: It is not polite to assume it is all right with your host or hostess to have your calls directed to their home. Before automatically forwarding your calls, check with your host and make sure he doesn’t mind, for everyone calling you will be rung though to your host’s telephone number. And it is your host, not you, who will be answering the telephone each time it rings.

When you do receive calls at someone else’s home, keep them brief and to the point. It is discourteous to tie up someone else’s telephone with your lengthy conversations.

Whiteside: I don’t care (about receiving telephone calls, cables or posts) as long as it’s for me. Everyone else can have their packages delivered to the back door.

ON ETIQUETTE Post: Good taste or bad is revealed in everything we are, do, or have. Our speech, manners, dress, and household goods — and even our friends — are evidences of the propriety of our taste.

Rules of etiquette are nothing more than sign-posts by which we are guided to the goal of good taste.

Whiteside: I think everyone should follow proper etiquette as long as they are around me, because I’m as close to American royalty as you can get.

‘Melrose Place’ gets a second life

HOLLYWOOD — The most disarming thing about Laura Leighton and Thomas Calabro — Melrose Place’s diabolical Sydney Andrews and Michael Mancini — is that they appear not to have aged since Aaron Spelling’s campy hit wrapped in 1999.

Calabro dismissed the idea with a laugh.

Leighton said, “You’re not the first person to say that, but it’s not true.”

Oh, but it is, as evidenced in the Sept. 22 episode, which flashed back to Sydney’s first death 12 years ago, a fatal car accident she somehow survived.

Turns out Michael — seen in all his ’90s-era poofyhaired glory — had lingering affection for his redheaded nemesis-turned-lover-turned-nemesis and helped her fake her own death.

Executive producer Darren Swimmer said traveling back in time didn’t take long. “We just had to adjust Thomas’ hair, and Laura looks the same.”

The producers of the new Melrose have zapped the camp in favor of a darker, slicker soap opera format. In 2009, Michael is a celebrity in the medical world but is at odds with his son David, who has inherited his pop’s lying, cheating ways.

Sydney, meanwhile, is resurrected and killed — again, and for good — by the end of Episode 1, her lifeless body found floating facedown in a pool.

‘Glee’ a teachable moment for families

HOLLYWOOD — Lulled into a sense of family-friendly excitement by the first installment of Glee, which Fox sent out like a tantalizing test balloon this summer, some parents subsequently expressed shock and concern over the overtly sexual nature of the show’s formal premiere.

Which is a bit strange, considering that the show is on Fox, not the Disney Channel, and is about, you know, high school.

The episode three weeks ago included allusions to and/or discussions about premature ejaculation, accidental pregnancy, sexual betrayal and the general teen obsession with carnality.

Which, OK, is a lot of edge for people hoping that Glee would turn out to be a slightly less gollygee version of High School Musical. With better acting. And much better songs.

Subsequent episodes were not quite as out there, but clearly Glee has claimed frank sexuality as part of its domain. In this time of special-interest TV, when each family member has his or her own personal screen and each

demographic its own network, it’s natural for parents to long for the golden age of the Family Hour, for that one show they can watch with their tweens without having to subject themselves to either bratty kids playing to a soul-brutalizing laugh track or the very real possibility that the skinned corpse of a prostitute will be turning up any minute now.

I’m here to assert that Glee may be just that show. Not in spite of the straight-on sexuality but because of it.

For those who claim to feel betrayed by the show’s sexiness, I have two words: Pretty Woman.

Remember when the combined creamy loveliness of Richard Gere and Julia Roberts turned a streetwalking prostitute into the modern-day Cinderella and wound up the No. 1 pajama party rental of its time?

Or one word: Twilight. Peruse your Bram Stoker for a moment; vampires are the ultimate symbol of scary sexuality — all that biting and shared bodily fluids, those uncontrollably fatal appetites that must be stilled or fatally sated.

Premature ejaculation may be frustrating for all concerned, but the idea that the truest passion is

the one that dances with death is a much deeper and more disturbing issue.

After watching the official premiere with the kids, some of us may have felt obligated to explain that, no, one cannot get pregnant without intercourse even if a Jacuzzi is involved. But the rest of the stuff — that girls want sex as much as boys, that people can get overly excited when they kiss, that boys talk about sex a lot — well, it’s true, isn’t it? More true than the High School Musical hypothesis that Troy and Gabriella would go through two years of couplehood without ever locking lips.

Part of Glee’s charm is its determined evocation of the big MGM musical, Judy and Mickey puttin’ on a show. But let’s not forget that many of those “kids” were hyped up on bennies at the time, or forced into fake studio romances, and teens and even tweens today know stuff like that.

Glee isn’t a network version of High School Musical or even a resurrected Square Pegs. The whole point of the first episode is that adults who deny the sexual impulses of teenagers do so at their own peril.

Executive producer Todd Slavkin said from his point of view that Sydney and Michael are the show’s long-thwarted star-crossed lovers. “We needed their romantic longing,” Slavkin said. “Darren and I always thought of those two as meant for each other but so devious they could never be together.” Off screen, Leighton, 41, and Calabro, 50, are now busy parents with seven kids between them. (Leighton is married to Desperate Housewives’ Doug Savant, who also starred in the original Melrose.) During dinner, the two tried to negotiate a play date for their respective sons.

Leighton, who received a Golden Globe nomination in 1995 for playing Sydney, was less enthusiastic about her wacky story arcs, in which she worked as a prostitute, joined a cult, and was committed to a psych ward.

Leighton is not sure how long her run will last.

The producers won’t say how — or if — Sydney’s character will work into the plot once her murderer is unveiled, but the actress seems to be OK with going along for the ride, however long it lasts.

“I have a family, and there are other things in my life now, but I think it’s good to enjoy and appreciate this while it’s happening,” Leighton said.

The new network TV season so far NCIS is up.

DWTS is down.

And Jay? He’s still hanging around.

Jay Leno: A great first week was followed by a somewhat sobering second. How so? On Sept.

21, the first night of the new season, The Jay Leno Show was seen by 5.9 million people, or just about 12 million below his opener a week before. What happened? Original programming happened.

NCIS, your new season champ: Always premature to call a winner after the first week, but NCIS launched with 21 million viewers last Tuesday, with spinoff NCIS: Los Angeles attracting 18.7 million. CSI, the former champ, was down to just 15.5 million on opening night — this, for a show that reliably scored more than 20 million viewers a season or so ago.

Dancing With the Stars: A slow start. Since when is 17.4 million (the first hour Sept. 21) a “slow” start? Since 2008, when DWTS launched with 21.4 million. The show was relatively soft all week — due to massive kickoffs for House and NCIS. Still, ABC has to be a little concerned.

A: It’s such a fantastic device. There are so many secrets that the audience knows but the other characters don’t. Everyone is withholding something or misunderstanding something. It’s this wonderful combination of gore and comedy and actual heart and emotion. You actually do care about these characters. I really can’t think of another show that pulls that off. Maybe The Sopranos.

Q: How did this happen?

A: It came to my agent, of course. But the very next morning I was sitting listening to a very long and detailed pitch from Clyde Phillips and John Goldwyn, the executive producers of the show. And I think it was about a 45-minute-long bit of storytelling.

Clyde was just telling absolutely everything about my character and how everything unfolds, all of the things that I can’t tell you or anybody else.

And he just had me on the edge of my seat.

Q: So they had you at the pitch meeting?

A: No, I said no. It was simply that my wife and I had this wonderful summer planned. I spent the whole year in New York doing theater and so we’d been apart an awful lot and we really wanted to spend the summer together. But, you know, three days after I turned it down, I accepted it after all. Everybody, including my wife, said, “You gotta take this job.”

And then I set about to watch all 36 episodes and I was just crazy about this show.

Became completely addicted to it. As everybody else seems to be.

Q: Do you find that people are surprised you’ve taken this role?

A: Not really. I love to mix things up. As far as television goes, I have been so defined from 3rd Rock From the Sun for the last several years. But I’ve let a lot of years go by and I thought this was a great way to follow that up.
