BASKETBALL PREVIEW

Study Up

Three Hawks not only perform on the court but achieve high honors in the classroom. GARRETT MILEY ’15 Hawk Staff The Saint Joseph’s University women’s basketball team not only excels on the court, but in the classroom as well. Guards Shelby Smith, ’13, and Erin Shields, ’14, and forward Mireia Vila, ’13, have all achieved excellent academic success throughout their careers as student athletes at St. Joe’s. Smith is the only threetime Big 5 All-Academic winner in team history. When asked about her success, she attributed her a c h i eve ments to her ability to be able to balance her time between academics and practice on the court. “I think it’s just about time management,” Smith said. “I’ve been lucky, I’ve worked very hard at it, but I’ve been lucky to be able to organize my time effectively. I’ve been able to get what I need to get done in the gym, but also stay on top of my classroom stuff as well.” Smith also explained a system the team uses to help younger team members find success on and off the court as student athletes. “As an upperclassmen, as a senior, and even as a team, we have little sisters and big sisters that are assigned to us at the beginning of the year,” explained Smith. “This year my little sis-

ters are Kelsey Berger,’16, and Ciara Andrews,’16. They’re my responsibility to make sure that they’re getting their shots in at practice, showing up to class, et cetera. It’s kind of everyone’s responsibility to take someone under the wing.” Shields also mentioned that she has grown into a leadership role on the team. “I’m trying to encourage the underclassmen to do what I’ve learned, and lead by example,” Shields said. Shields lead the team in scoring in four games l a s t year, her highest coming against Maryland and scoring 16 points. Shields and Vila, like Smith, attribute their classroom success to time management. “I manage my time, that’s what I try and do,” said Shields. “I know what it takes to work hard so I think that carries over from basketball to school.” Vila has been a recipient of the St. Joe’s Athletic Director’s Honor roll the past three seasons. Her classroom excellence is exceptional as she has also learned how to manage her time efficiently. If there is anything to take away from the success of these Hawks, time management is a major key to any form of success on and off the court.

I’ve been lucky, I’ve worked very hard at it, but I’ve been lucky to be able to organize my time effectively.
