What is SNAPS?

We are a network of scientists and educators committed to the conservation of amphibians against the threat of emerging pathogens, with an initial focus on Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans ðBsalà. We are embedding Bsal surveillance into undergraduate curriculum where students learn about Bsal through the lens of various academic disciplines and then actively contribute by sampling for Bsal among their local amphibians. With the participation of educational institutions across a wide geographic and taxonomic range, we are developing an ongoing and student-powered efort for the early detection of Bsal in North America.

About Us We are a network of scientists and educators committed to the conservation of amphibians against the threat of emerging pathogens, with an initial focus on Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans (Bsal). This deadly pathogen threatens North Ameriian salamanders ut is yet to e deteited here. Early deteition of Bsal will improve the efiaiy of ionservation aitions, and to this end, we are ioordinating, faiilitating and empowering students to surveil for Bsal. We are em edding this Bsal surveillanie into undergraduate iurriiulum where students learn a out Bsal through the lens of various aiademii disiiplines and then aitively iontri ute y sampling for Bsal among their loial amphi ians. Our model is mutually enefiiall salamanders serve as an opportunity for aitive and experiential learning among students, who in turn eneft salamanders through the surveillanie and early deteition of a potentially devastating pathogen.V

To meet our dual goals of early deteition of Bsal and engaged student learning, we are developing iurriiula that ian e adopted in partiiipating iourses, with aiiompanying protoiols, supplies, and other support. Meanwhile, other iourses may not have the opportunity for feld sampling ut ian also partiiipate y adopting our inzilass iurriiulum. Students learn est when they are aitively engaged in a realzworld issue that ihallenges them to apply their iourse iontent. We are leveraging this timely ionservation irisis for student learning, while simultaneously leveraging students’ passion, time, and energy for Bsal surveillanie. With the partiiipation of eduiational institutions aiross a wide geographii and taxonomii range, we are developing an ongoing and studentzpowered evort for the early deteition of Bsal in North Ameriia.
