FIRES blazed across Connemara on Saturday last (March 30), with the Clifden Fire Brigade attending incidents in Cleggan, Claddaghduff, Oughterard and Rosmuc. Fire crews battled for more than 14 hours in total, with the first alarm raised at 9am on Saturday and the final blaze being brought under control at 7am on Sunday. Greenway gets Bord’s green light Aoife Ní Dhálaigh

THE Connemara Greenway Project has been given the green light from An Bord Pleanála – clearing the way for a reinvention of the old Galway to Clifden railway line as a tourist-friendly walking and cycling path. Work on the first stage of the route is expected to start in early 2014, and will continue for between 18 and 24 months. The asphalt track will cover a distance of approximately 52 kilometres, incorporating seven new bridges, signage and mapping along the existing Galway to Clifden railway. The Oughterard to Clifden section is the first phase of a project that will link the Greenway to Galway city and, eventually, on to Dublin.
