Image Courtesy of: Facebook The unforgiving hand of death ended the chapter of Hugh Masekela in the current life as we know it now, through Prostrate Cancer disease on the 23rd of January 2018 at a hospital in Johannesburg. The trumpet instrument became a famous tool of musical melody best associated with the legendary Hugh Masekela’s music abilities. He mastered the trumpet and the trumpet mastered him, thus safely securing a seat amongst the globes most celebrated love, African and jazz musical genres’ performer/entertainer.

His journey and musical engagement took birth in his youth in the 40s when he was still 14 years old. Raised by his grandmother in an illegal she-been like environment where many teenagers adopted negative attributes, which fortunately, he escaped by his innate gift of songs often played via the air ways and sung

along by community patrons.

Also, alongside his early church encounter and friendship with the pastor ignited his musical passion and set course to his destiny. His life’s purpose immediately set alight into fame as he became part of the South Africa’s first youth orchestra known as Huddleston Jazz. Through his music, he told stories that draw a tale of the South African struggle during the apartheid regime making his lyrics the metaphorical driving force behind the political positive change South Africa needed. Furthermore, the burden of success followed him like the plague when he yet again formed part of the founding members in the King Kong orchestra, which took the South African jazz music by storm and setting the tone for the African jazz Black and white collaborative endeavours. In 1960, a year that played a major role in

the rewriting of the South African history that saw South African political freedom fighters involved in the struggle for the freedom of a black man, which brutally took with it young lives and left behind an unforgettable blood bath. Of great importance, it did not only dramatically leave an irremovable mark in the South African history, but he was a victim as well since he was forced to exile taking refuge in London/England where he joined the Guildhall School of Music, one of the world’s most prestigious musical institutions.

Hugh Masekela luckily mastered the technical aspects of the trade as he learned from the best. His academic best performance awarded him a scholarship in Manhattan School of Music, in Manhattan/United States of America. Between 1960 and 1964, he became an apprentice under some of the world’s best

classical musical trainers whose disciplines in combination with his born talent turning him to an overnight success in the American community. His pop jazz tunes set him apart as it took the country by storm. Among many popular melodies he produced, we have: “Up, Up and Away” and “Bring him home”, which were songs designed as an anthem for the movement to advocate for the release of Nelson Mandela, which awarded him the crown for selling over four million copies. The written and released Hugh Masekela autobiography is an up-close culmination of his personal and professional life, which is a priceless mental re-enactment experience of an activist musician and celebrity whose life inspired many and by rewriting their history. He is survived by son Selema Mabena, daughter Pula Twala and family members.

Comrades Marathon Adds 0.98 kilometers to its Run Tuesday 30 January 2018 20:24GMT [CWSN] Kesia Qulu For seven years approximately 80 500 runners have paced the comrades marathon’s 89.20 kilometer down run through the Chief Albert Luthuli Way route into Durban using the Tollgate Bridge down N3 Highway into the Durban City Centre.

In the effort to remain legislative adherent to comply with the ‘Events Act 2010’ change of venue became imperative, thus the chosen finish line. With the strong desire to avoid traffic obstruction, the new route presents participants with an additional 0.98 killometer run as they enter Durban through the N3 Highway into David Webster Street, right into Braam Fischer Road, left into Samora Machel Road,

through Masabalala Yengwa Avenue to the Mosses Mabhida Stadium. Delaine Cools, Comrades Marathon Head of Media and Communications said: The runners are highly anticipant of the new route and the finishing venue.

Since its inception in 1921, the Comrades Marathon remains as a commemoration and an honorary symbol of the South African Soldiers, who were brutally killed during the war Clapham.

Following a global solidarity march that took place on Sunday January 21th, 2018 by Congolese nationals for the stepping down of the DRC’s current president Joseph Kabila, who has overstayed his two terms and a further one year grace term awarded by the catholic church called the: “Saint Sylvester Accord”, signed in December 2016 as an agreement with the regime to organise elections in 2017.

As a result of the non-respect to do accordingly and adhere to the signed agreement, the church organised an international peaceful march. Thousands came in attendance around the world, hun-

dreds in Durban South Africa supported by some local organisations and political parties like the National People’s Ambassadors led by Comrade Mthandeni Zungu. They marched from King Dinuzulu to Denis Hurley Street at the Emmanuel Cathedral to deliver a memorandum of demands to Father Makhaye.

During the march many reports of violence anguish and torture reached Durban from the DRC. According to a source, in Kinshasa a total of 5 people were killed through live bullets fired by police and military forces, 33 sustained gunshot wounds.

The Catholic Church services were interrupted in Cité Anciens Combattants, Binza/Ozone Ngaliema and in Lemba in the capital city Kinshasa. Some taken hostage and kept in the pri-

Clinics, schools and other initiatives have begun to render positive results particularly in the area of pregnancy prevention.

It is sad, however, to see that evidently the same cannot be said in the area of safe sex for girls and young women enjoy and prefer unprotected sex. This comes with great exposure to the HIV monster alongside with other sexual transmitted infections.

While it is clear that the larger percentage of users are willing recreational drug, regular users and in some cases experimenters are sadly those who fall victim to trickery by drug dealers. The scariest reality is the colour, shapes, sizes and deceitful sweet wrappings of the drug often presents making it child and adolescent friendly.

Clearly, the Global health community has yet another greater human challenge now and in years to come. Unless a productive mitigation strategy can be found, more deaths and insanity will continue to cause chaos in communities.

Registration affected as an impasse continues at DUT Wednesday 31 January 2018 21:51GMT [CWSN] Lizeka Maduna 2018 academic year registration process has been affected at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) as the staff protest over wages dispute continues indefinitely.

On Monday, the strike organised by three unions entered its third week. National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union (NEHAWU), National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU), and Tertiary Education Union of South Africa (TENUSA) embarked on a strike on January 15, demanding a 10 per cent salary increase.

According to the unions, workers are also calling for the vice-chancellor, Thandwa Mthembu to step down. However, Wiseman Madinane, DUT’s Council Chairperson, said that: “if workers had issues with the vice chancellor they would have to raise them with the council. The issue is misplaced and we urge the unions to solve any issues they may have directly with the council”.

Meanwhile this academic year is set to start in the following week, while staffers have remained resolute on their decision to continue demonstrating until their demands are met. Aside from wages dispute, there are also ongoing labour issues facing workers, said: Milton Estrice, spokesperson for combined unions.

Estrice also raised the concern that: “the management was treating the staff unfairly and showed no intention to negotiate and reach an amicable solution.

People have been clear that they won’t surrender. Management may say it is business as usual, but if you have more than 60 to 70 per cent staff on strike, it’s going to have an impact on operations,” he said.

South Africa’s matric class sets the bar for class of 2018

The Gauteng province took the second place as best performer with 86 per cent, while Kwazulu/Natal increased its pass from 66.4 per cent in 2016 to 72.8 per cent in the current year. The province is responsible for 28 per cent of the country’s overall senior certificate class of 2017’s distinctions.

Western Cape came in with 84.4 per cent achievement, lower than its previous year. However, it leads with bachelor and passes rates in Mathematics with Westerford High School building a steady reputation of 100 percent pass achievement for a few years, which 2017 was no exception.

Limpopo saw a 3.1 per cent increase from last year accomplishing 65.6 percent but also placing it among the lowest performing provinces this year. According to the Democratic Alliance (DA), from the 127 555 full time and part time students, 44 328 did not seat the exam. This was found to be curious and raises suspicion.

Image Courtesy of: People of Shembe During the UthingoLwen kosazane era followers traditionally travelled to Enhlangakazi Mountain to undergo the first month of the year’s annual 3 week fast and prayer programme. Changes occurred after his death, as a result of the new management team moving the leadership of ‘Unyazilwezulu’ venue to the current Mountain Khenani. The Shembe culture is a religion of many traditional rituals practised in a much specified and enthusiastic uniformity.

Annually, the month of January as well as the other remaining eleven ones carry very specific ritual outlines, which must be adhered to at all cost. January carries the most portion of responsibility and rituals in totality. Furthermore, it is a sacrificial spiritual and refocus of mind

centred month by a fast from wheat, flour, eggs and chicken aiming at interceding for those gone before them, often referred to as the ancestors. Their teaching over generations has embedded the importance of interceding as one of the ceremonies that allow them to communicate with the dead to ensure the absence of hardships in the spiritual world they are living now. This ideology is an unfathomable demand in the ears of those outside their typical African customary practises. Ebuhleni Temple serves as a venue which gathers all believers from around the KwaZulu/Natal in preparation to final destination to the Mountain Khenani. During the gathering, which lasts for a period of 2 days, they pray and intercede. This is a time of great importance to

the ceremony ahead. On the 3rd day, multitudes embark on a 3 day journey by foot to their destination. Upon arrival, one would imagine due to how tired they would be uniformity may pause and the human desire to rest be afforded priority with no restrictions, not in the case of the old age entity where order and procedure rules. Entry to the sacred place is amongst the most important ceremonial activities of the day, the hierarchy and importance of the participants determine the order of entry. The congregation has a living King who is the highest and seen as the holiest living being who possesses special powers in this life apart from God the creator, King Nyazilwezulu Shembe then leads the entry followed by his disciples who carry with bowls,

whose content is mystical and is believed to carry unusual spiritual powers too powerful for the human eye to contain. The male masses are hierarchically behind the King as an official procedure followed by virgins and then comes a cohort of wives and lastly followed by those seen as the way wood woman saved by grace commonly known by the term Izintombi Zentethelelo. Finally, the queue is ended with non-virgins without children and single mothers. When congregation is safely settled, a strict 3 week daily programme is initiated. The programme sees a breakdown of hourly prayerful sessions, from 9 to 11 am, 1 to 3 pm, 6 to 9 pm and 12 midnight. Saturdays seem to attract less prayer time. All year round, Shembe followers abide to strict conditions such as none consumption of all forms of hot meals from 6pm to 6pm Friday to Saturday.

Post ending the Mount Khenani three week programme, they return not home but to Ebuhle Temple, where they first began.

There, they remain till the last Saturday of the calendar month.

This is a special day as it affords couples awaiting marriage to finally tie the knot. The following day being a Sunday sees music and dance displayed in huge celebrations for their great accomplishment during the fasting period. Rituals and Norms have existed since the stone ages. All human race society groups respect, understand and adhere to their own. Often, when one stands outside looking in the view, it is different from the perspective of the one standing in or looking out. Shembe beliefs are best known and understood by their own.

The Kwa-Zulu-Natal Provincial Congress, on Saturday 3 February 2018, is the first step towards bringing about a new beginning for the people of KZN, that will see the DA marching into government.

Delegates from across the Province will gather at the Olive Convention Centre in Durban to cast their votes and elect the leadership that will take the DA in KZN to the polls in 2019.

The DA has set its sights on bringing the ANC in KZN below 50% in 2019 and the Party will unite and work together towards achieving this.

Media Invitation 01 February 2018 City Hosts Book Launch For Living Legend Sugar Ray Xulu

EThekwini Municipality in collaboration with AmaZulu Football Club will host a series of events aimed at honouring eThekwini Living Legend Awardee, Sugar Ray Xulu, for the valuable contribution he has made in uplifting football in the City. The weekend activities will kick off with the launch of the book, Ngibuka Ngeso Lesihlabani, an autobiography of the legendary Sugar Ray Xulu. The book was written by Sibusiso D. Khumalo.

In the evening, AmaZulu FC will take on Lamontville Golden Arrows FC in a friendly match at King Goodwill Zwelithini Stadium. Kick-off is at 20h00.

Image Courtesy of: modernathlete.co.za The Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) expressed its gratitude to its outgoing Board Member and CSI Committee Convener this past weekend.

At a special getaway, CMA Chairperson, Cheryl Winn, touched on Alen Hattingh’s deep loyalty and support of The Ultimate Human Race, saying, “Alen’s love affair with athletics and the Comrades Marathon began 45 years ago as a teenager with Ladysmith Athletics Club.” She said, “On the 17th March 1973 tragedy struck when on his way to participate in the Bluff Marathon in preparation for what would have been his first Comrades Marathon, the car he was travelling in was struck in a hit & run accident on the notorious Fields Hill, in which Alen’s brother-inlaw was killed instantly and Alen was thrown out of the vehicle severing his spine, thus changing his life forever. He was not yet 21 years old. Imagine the despair.”

“After spending many months in hospital, some 6-7 months later he was back at the Ladysmith Athletics Club weekly time trial, where within a relatively short period through the strength of his own indomitable spirit and the friendship, love and support of his clubmates he became a permanent fixture as official timekeeper of the time trials, later club secretary and eventually life member and honorary Vice President of Ladysmith AC.” “In about 1980 Alen moved to Pinetown where he met Charlene a nurse who has been steadfastly by his side ever since. By a twist of fate Charlene had actually nursed Alen at Addington Hospital after his accident. One of

the first things he did on arriving in Pinetown was to become instrumental in the launch of a new athletics club – Queensburgh Harriers, where he then spent another 10 years in various capacities, in recognition of which he was later also rewarded life membership.”

Cheryl tells us that in 1990 he moved to Westville Athletics Club where most of his friends were, to which he is still an active member to this day, having served as road captain, cross-country captain and Vice Chairman. In the meantime Alen also became involved in provincial athletics serving on the old Natal Marathon Runners Association for 10 years from 1985 – 1995 before it was dis-banded, then becoming involved with KZNA as Chairman of its Cross-Country Commission, as well as qualifying as a technical official, initially reaching what used to be called a national road running referee, now a Level 2 Technical Official. Alen has been time-keeping and officiating at road-running and cross-country events week-in, week-out for decades in KwaZulu-Natal, with his friendly face and his wheelchair a familiar sight on the finish line of hundreds of KZN events over the years. With regard to the Comrades Marathon, Alen has served on the CMA Board in two separate periods for a total of 6 years, the first being 2005 – 2006. In 2007 in joined the CMA Race Organising Committee to take on the all-important Refreshment Station portfolio which he single-handedly managed until 2010. He re-joined the CMA Board from 2014 – 2017 during which time he also chaired the CMA CSI Committee and

briefly the Official Charities Committee.

In his capacity as CSI Convener, he has been actively involved in the staging of the Greater Edendale 10km Race, the two CMA Outdoor Gym Projects (one to Msunduzi, one to eThekwini), the handover of wheelchairs to the Msunduzi Disabled Club, and various other athletics development projects in conjunction with KZN Athletics. He was awarded Life Membership of CMA in 2015.

In recently handing over a small token of appreciation to Alen on the occasion of his retirement from the CMA Board, Cheryl stated, “Alen has been a source of inspiration, motivation and great humility to us all at Comrades – through the courage, indomitable spirit, unstinting loyalty, cheerfulness, resilience and generosity of spirit with which he has set a shining example to us all. Charlene too is a cherished member of the Comrades family, with her ever-present care and support to Alen. We admire and thank them both for all they have given, and continue to give to Comrades and athletics in KZN. It is both humbling and uplifting to behold.”
