2018 - The Library Foundation Annual Report

Page 1

The purpose of The Library Foundation is to ensure the future of the library as an indispensable community resource. We do this by helping secure financial resources to support collections, programs, services, technology and physical facilities of the library. The Library Foundation pursues this purpose by seeking philanthropic support, providing conscientious stewardship of the assets in its care, encouraging appropriate community partnerships and advocating on behalf of the library’s mission and continue helping our community be the best place to live, work, learn and play. The Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library is the sole beneficiary of funds raised by The Library Foundation.

Dear Friends,

The Library Foundation is grateful for the many donors whose gifts are making a difference at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library. We share this annual report as a way to demonstrate that together we are helping the library fulfill its mission of “sparking curiosity and connecting our community through literacy and learning”. Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library celebrated the first year in April, and by the end of 2018 there were 4,710 children registered. It remains a priority for the library and therefore, a program that the foundation continues to raise funds so every child birth up to 5 years can have books at home. The donations received from individuals; grants given by Capitol Federal Foundation, Topeka Community Foundation, Westar Energy Foundation and Cox Charities; and organizations and businesses too numerous to mention are listed in our donor pages in this report. We were thrilled to receive from Security Benefit a $200,000 gift in February 2018 for a new Adventuremobile. We appreciate Security Benefit’s generous gift as well as their commitment to becoming the library’s newest literacy partner. The new Adventuremobile arrives in March 2019 and replaces the original 25-year-old mobile library. It will travel to 20 elementary schools during the school year and through-out the community in the summer. The Adventuremobile is an important extension of the library to our school children. We are pleased to be able to continue this tradition of service to our community with Security Benefit’s substantial support. The library opened eight new “Team Rooms”, fulfilling a need for small meeting rooms. We celebrated the naming of one of the new team rooms thanks

to a wonderful gift from Warren Taylor. In May 2018, Warren was joined by friends and family for a ribbon cutting of room #3 which is named the Taylor Room in honor of Warren and in memory of his mother, Velva C. Taylor. Throughout 2018 we have seen construction going on outside the library as well as inside. Many of the projects in the facilities renovations are funded from foundation gifts. In May we were excited for the groundbreaking of Claire’s Courtyard which was a result of a gift from Dr. Glenn Swogger. This outdoor patio, amphitheater and pavilion will be ready this spring and the incredible support by everyone who purchased a commemorative brick for the amphitheater has provided the furnishings for the outdoor dining, reading and entertainment area. In the donor list you will see a number of gifts in someone’s honor or memory. We thank the many people who chose to honor or remember their friend or loved one with support of programs and services at the library. These gifts make a significant impact on the library and provide that special recognition as well. We are appreciative of your gifts and what they have helped accomplish at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library. With your trust and partnership, we will continue to manage these gifts in a way that provides long-term financial stability and flexibility. Thank you for your support!

CLAIRE’S COURTYARD

with Brick Amphitheater in Library’s Future With Glenn Swogger’s $1 million gift to The Library Foundation, the new outdoor sunroom, patio, and amphitheater will open later this spring. Claire’s Courtyard is located on the west side of the library and is accessed by a bridge connected to the library. This addition to the library is named after Glenn’s late wife, Claire, and provides an outdoor dining, reading and entertainment area. Special features include a waterfall on the patio and artwork displays, including works by Claire Swogger. The Library Foundation chose to add commemorative bricks so the community could be a part of Claire’s Courtyard. Nearly 600 bricks were purchased in 2018 raising more than $60,000 to fund the furnishings for the sunroom and patio. The bricks are embedded in the floor of the amphitheater so we will be able to sit by our brick. We thank Dr. Swogger and the many donors who purchased bricks in support for this new addition to our library!

TOPEKA CHAPTER OF THE LINKS

RECOGNIZED The Topeka (KS) Chapter of the Links, Inc. was selected as the 2018 Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser by the Topeka Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals at its annual National Philanthropy Day celebration in November. The Library Foundation nominated them for their support of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. Their ongoing support of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library provides the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library and United Way of Greater Topeka much needed funds to make available

Imagination Library to all children from birth up to age five. In an effort to help every child be ready for kindergarten, this program promotes early childhood literacy giving free age appropriate books to children. Each month a book along with caregiver reading tips are mailed to the child’s home.Your gifts pay for postage and books. The Topeka Chapter of Links partners with many organizations and businesses in the Topeka community to help them deliver transformational programing. We say thank you the Links members for their support of an effective early childhood literacy program that will impact many children in our community.

HARDER IREAD

Program Update The Robert C. and Dorothy L. Harder IREAD Initiative completed its 5th year. Donor contributions provide special celebrations with kindergarteners as they learn to read independently. In the 2017-2018 school year, the opportunity for kindergarten classrooms included all 15 Topeka Public Elementary Schools. Seven took part including Lowman Hill, McCarter, Meadow, Randolph, Ross, State Street and Whitson. The largest elementary school in the district, Jardine, was newly re-remodeled and understandably postposed participation until the 2018-19 school year. With these seven schools the library reached 517 kids and provided 338 with library cards. We kept the celebrations flexible to fit the schools. Some came for library tours as well as storytime. Others preferred school visits to share stories. In either case kids received an Easy Reader to add to their home book collection, a library card wallet, and a cookie from the Millennium Café. Those without existing library cards were given cards as well. Thanks to our donors, IREAD has reached 1,374 kids since inception. 38% participated in this past year. Our 2018-19 plans make it even easier for schools to participate. They keep the focus on celebrating readers over getting library cards into students’ hands. We anticipate being able to reach even more kindergarteners in the spring to congratulate them on being readers and to welcome them to the library.

Early benefactors, Edward and Mary Wilder, helped raise funds to build the first permanent library in Topeka. Their memorial gifts to the library created the first public art collection in the city. In 1998, The Library Foundation created the Edward and Mary Wilder Society. We give special thanks to those who are securing the future of our awesome library by including The Library Foundation in your estate plans or making an annual lifetime gift.
