Welcome Note

In the December 2015 edition of Inform, I wrote an introduction piece focused on change. In this edition of Connect, we’ll give an overview of our recent spring event in Alicante, Spain.

the market as a group, both at European and UK level.

As a group, together, we are part of that changing and consolidating market and our ability to remain super competitive lies within the phrase “Strength in Numbers”.

With record numbers attending the event and almost 500 business meetings taking place during the event, it was exhilarating to see and hear the number of positive discussions taking place to support the growth of relationships and businesses.

As a growing group, we play a key role in our market and our strength will further grow as we aggregate and consolidate volume toward a group of strategically chosen suppliers who will help to create value for our members, their customers and to our industry as a whole.

In the conference section, the overwhelming topic once again centred around change. With an initial look at how mega trends such as globalisation, population growth and the Internet of Things are influencing society, to trends that are impacting the automotive industry.

Some of those automotive trends include electrification, connected car (of which there are expected to be 152 million globally by 2020) and autonomous driving. The latter has its sceptics but becomes more of a reality every day.

The combination of connected car and autonomous driving are leading our industry down a path where data and all things around that, including who owns it, who can access and channel it and that will play a critical role in the future aftermarket.

The latter part of our conference looked more at change within the aftermarket, starting with the acceleration of market consolidation in Europe to the role we play in

Recent Alliance Automotive UK (AAUK) acquisitions include Braymarc Commercial Components Ltd and HS Atec Ltd taking sales of subsidiaries to well over £100m.

Alliance Automotive Group (AAG) has entered into an agreement to acquire Busch GmbH, a distributor of light vehicle spare parts operating in Baden Württemberg. Busch GmbH operates 8 distribution outlets in the South West of Germany, delivering spare parts to over 5,000 customers, primarily independent repairers. It is a well-established regional distributor with sales of over €20m. This acquisition takes sales of Germany to over £130m.

The 2016 Spring Event Record number of delegates The 2016 Spring Event in May was the first overseas conference to combine motor factor members from both groups, GROUPAUTO and UAN. The location was the superbly appointed five star BarcelĂł Asia Gardens resort in Spain and much like previous years, the event was an opportunity for members and suppliers to meet in an informal setting for business sessions and socialising over a long weekend.

This year a record 330 delegates travelled from over 14 UK airports to Alicante.

Unfortunately the weather across the weekend was mild and overcast with the sun only breaking through the clouds for a few hours on Sunday afternoon. Although disappointing, it didn’t dampen the atmosphere of the event.

The Friday night saw the hotel deliver a hearty buffet style banquet for the welcome dinner; A relaxed evening that allowed everyone to catch up with each other and this extended late in to the night, and for some, the earlier hours of Saturday morning, with a flow of drinks and conversation at the hotel bar.

An early start Saturday morning for the supplier workshop meetings made for some sleepy eyes. Prior to arriving on resort the meetings diary had 462 pre-booked appointments with suppliers. The workshop setting allows each sponsoring supplier to host a meeting desk in the hotel conference room where members have 15 minute timeslots to discuss any opportunities.

I learn so much from other members at the spring event, it’s great to talk to people in the same situation and share ideas of how we deal with different things.

I meet new people every year and look forward to seeing them the next year. For me the spring event is also a reward for a year’s hard work.

I hope they continue and members appreciate all the work that goes into them.

Following the business sessions, delegates joined their partners for an afternoon at leisure before returning for the Saturday evening drinks reception and gala dinner in the Shanghai Suite of the hotel.

The Sunday morning conference session was the first opportunity for the trading groups’ managing director Steve Richardson to address the members and suppliers.

A clear and concise message was delivered in confidence outlining the future technology changes and the effect on the aftermarket, the current position of the group in the UK and Europe, the activity of the group in the last 12 months and the strategy moving forward.

07 Steve Richardson rounded up the conference with a few words of thanks to both Phil Dodd and Bob Ackroyd, as Phil has decided to pursue his own ventures and leave his role as managing director of UAN. Bob Ackroyd will move from purchasing director of the group to become the managing director of UAN from June.

The Sunday evening saw the farewell dinner at a Spanish fiesta themed offsite location.

After dinner the coaches returned delegates to the hotel to spend the last hours at the bar with colleagues, partners and friends before early departures on Monday morning back home where they were greeted by the beautiful sunny UK climate!

Steve Richardson said: “The feedback from our members and supplier sponsors has been fantastic. It is evident that everyone gains so much from the event both on a social and business front.

We really appreciate the time and effort our members and suppliers put in to this event.

The togetherness of the group is evident and I’m proud to be a part of the biggest and best trading group in the industry.

I would like to say a huge thank you to all those who attended and of course the sponsoring suppliers, without which this event would simply not be possible.”

This event was invaluable for our business and a worthwhile investment.

It was great to catch up with old friends (and new) allowing me the opportunity to speak with such a large proportion of the membership at one event.

2016 Events Roundup The events calendar in 2016 is busier than ever for the group. We kicked off the year with our hugely successful annual garage trade show event in April at the MK Arena, Milton Keynes.

This was quickly followed by our spring event in Alicante (see page 4 for more information). These two events have seen a 20% increase in delegates attendance showing the importance of such events within our group.

Throughout the year, AutoCare also exhibit at the Mechanex shows in Manchester, Donington and Sandown to promote to independent garages the benefits of the most successful garage programme in the industry.

In June 2016, the first Automechanika Birmingham show will open the doors to the industry. AutoCare will have a large exhibition space on stand 11K70 with the aim to attract new garages to the garage programme in turn increasing loyalty spend with GROUPAUTO motor factors.

Alan Skuse Car and Truck Parts Family Business of the Year

Alan Skuse Car & Truck Parts were highly commended in the Family Business of the Year award category at the Herald Business Awards 2016.

GROUPAUTO member Alan Skuse Car & Truck Parts is a family run business based in Plymouth. Founded in 1978 they operated from the garage and cellar of their family home in Plymstock.

In the 1990s the business moved to a small unit in Coxside and in 2005 moved to its current purpose-built unit where it now has an annual turnover approaching £3million and 24 employees. Founders, Alan and Trina Skuse are still actively involved in the business supporting their son Matthew who now controls the company.

Now in to their sixth year the Herald Business Awards seek to highlight the achievements of Plymouth’s most dynamic companies as well as shining a light on the skills of the talented individuals that work in them. This year in particular the Herald Awards received the most entries yet, but it wasn’t the number of entries but the calibre of them that made the task of producing a competitive shortlist for each of the categories a very difficult task.

I was very proud for my mother and father, who had laid the foundations of the business and who both still play a very active daily role, despite being in their seventies and eighties respectively.

“Being an active member of an international trading group doesn’t detract from our ethos regarding our community and we endeavour, wherever possible, to trade with and support other local businesses.

As you should be aware, G-Logix is the distribution centre for GROUPAUTO and UAN members. The G-Logix support team are on hand for all customer service enquiries. The team was relocated earlier in 2016 from the distribution centre to the head office in Bradford to work closely with the purchasing and marketing teams.

Hazel Makinson

Customer Service Team Leader

Hazel joined the group back in February 2016 from AMK to manage the G-Logix customer service team. Hazel has vast knowledge of the industry and experience of our loyal membership. Hazel is responsible for the day-to-day management of the support team.

As well as supporting the sales and ordering enquiries from members, Paul utilises his IT and marketing experience in his responsibility of managing the G-Logix website, which includes keeping products updated with images, descriptions and pricing.

Kevin Golding Technical Advisor

Kevin has over 20 years’ experience of products under the DRI brand and brings the technical knowledge to G-Logix supporting members with any application enquiries including diagnosing faults, information on how things work and sales support. Kevin is also on hand for sales support and liaises with all distribution suppliers on any product issues.

ZF (SACHS) Clutch New G-Logix Offering

G-Logix is pleased to announce that a range of ZF clutch product, has been added to its stock profile.

Why we have done it?

ZF is a major OE player in the clutch market and has many OE contracts on clutch and DMF technology. Due to this OE pedigree, ZF have some captive parts in their range for popular vehicles, that members need to be stocking.

There are also many other parts that are very competitively priced due to the economies of scale derived from servicing OE contracts. Due to these price differences, as a group we will continue to lose sales to our competition if we do not stock these in ZF. OE product is a growth area within members’ clutch spend, up 14% in 2015.

This trend has continued into quarter 1 2016 (up 7%). Looking at the breakdown of spend per brand, it is evident that ZF are not being used as a supplier of clutch, by the majority of the membership.

To enable members to have simple access to ZF products to complement their existing clutch offering, the decision has

been made to bring ZF clutch products into G-Logix, with a net offer for members.

The offer

ZF clutch products will be available from G-Logix on a next day, net basis. Pricing has been set at the equivalent of ZF’s mid rebate bracket (£10k - £30k = 15%).

What this means is that members will have competitive pricing on key ZF clutch products, without having to commit spend to reach rebate levels.

Those few members currently dealing direct with ZF and spending over £30k, will have greater benefit continuing to do so.

Overall clutch opportunity

The addition of key ZF references, alongside the Valeo range currently available from G-Logix, enables members to supplement / compliment their LUK stock, by effectively offering an OE clutch “Best Buy” programme.

G-Logix’s low minimum order values and wide portfolio of stock, allows members to cherry pick clutch references at a competitive price, alongside their other G-Logix purchases.

G-Truck Alliance Automotive Group opens Gates on new revenue stream A new supply agreement between Gates and the Alliance Automotive Group has given operators and independent workshops across the UK opportunities to exert greater control over their vehicle maintenance costs.

The Alliance Automotive Group own a number of CV parts distribution businesses.

Gates is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of belts and tensioners.

Five AAG subsidiaries across fifteen branches have added Gates Heavy Duty Belt Kits, as well as the individual belts and tensioners to their inventories.

The branches involved are from Big Wheel Services; Frenco; HGV Truck & Trailer Parts; Hydrair; Industrial Friction Services.

It’s a move that gives cost saving benefits to fleets and independent workshops in a band that runs from the South West of England up into Wales and across the North West of England. Coverage is also provided from branches in Lincolnshire, Essex and Norfolk.

Commercial Vehicles, says the opportunity to add an OE brand and a new revenue stream at the same time is good for the individual branches, benefits the group as a whole and offers cost control advantages to customers.

Superior performance and longer operational lifetimes were among the reasons specified for that particular OE success.

Historically, potential customers have been sourcing these products as OE replacement distress purchases through the main dealer networks. That kind of service doesn’t always come cheaply.

Our branches will be able to supply the same OE quality from stock, within the hour at an aftermarket price. It won’t be a difficult decision for customers to make.

Gates is already a preferred supplier for drive system designs among most of Europe’s major truck manufacturers and it has recently become the OE choice for Auxiliary Belt Drive Systems on a range of DAF trucks.

A recent extension of the Gates Heavy Duty Micro-V Belt Kit range for trucks and buses means that CV parts distributors have access to replacement parts for Auxiliary Belt Drive Systems (ABDS) covering 94% of the UK vehicle parc.

Gates catalogues parts according to OE references, then by make/model, which greatly simplifies the component identification and ordering processes.

Stocks are now in place across all of the AAG subsidiary branches and available for sale with immediate effect.

G-Truck Racing A case of so close for Rooster

Everyone agreed that it had been a highly satisfactory weekend for Luke Taylor and the Rooster Truck Racing team at the Pembrey Circuit.

And everyone agreed that it was almost so much better.

Little damage

“It’s been a good weekend,” said an upbeat David Taylor, Rooster team manager, under the clear blue skies of Pembrey in South Wales. “There’s little damage to the truck and Luke showed again that he could be competitive. It won’t be long before he’s picking up silverware.” If there was an element of disappointment in there, David wasn’t showing it.

Ill-judged

But the fact is, Luke had been well on course for his first win of the season, in only the team and truck’s second outing, before an ill-judged manoeuvre by an overambitious opponent at the Brooklands hairpin spun the Rooster Renault and left Luke battling to hold on for seventh place.

That was in the first race of three on a sunny, breezy Sunday. Saturday’s two races had seen Luke powering home for

creditable third and eighth place finishes. There was a sense that Luke was building momentum on a track he likes, and beginning to push the Renault to its limits.

In front

Sunday dawned bright and dry and Luke used the Renault’s power to push to the front almost from the start of race 3, where he stayed for the best part of nine laps.

A mix of skilful cornering and raw power was successfully blocking out the most experienced drivers in British truck sport.

Luke looked comfortable, his opponents frustrated. When that frustration made one of them push for a gap that wasn’t there, it ended both their hopes of a winning finish.

“I was comfortable till he hit me,” said Luke.

“It was a gap that wasn’t there. But it was one of those things.”

Angry Rooster

Luke is a friendly, placid character but even he admitted: “I was angry at the time mind.”

The fourth race finished with Luke coming

in seventh, after some ill-judged tinkering with the truck’s suspension. “You have to try things but it didn’t work,” Luke admitted.

In the final race Luke remained in the leading pack throughout and was first for a period, finally finishing in sixth.

Despite the disappointments, Pembrey proved another positive meeting for Rooster. In the steep learning curve of Class A truck racing, team and driver are on the fast track.

Both associations started in February 2016 and the seasons for both of these sports came to an end in May 2016.

Here we’ve collected our highlight moments and some of our favourite social media interactions: Betway Premier League Darts 2016 Round-Up Michael Van Gerwen defeated his great rival Phil Taylor in the Play-Offs at The O2 in London, in the final.

The world number one, who formerly won the trophy in 2013, picked up the £200,000 first prize in style as he started the night by seeing off Adrian Lewis 10-4 in the semifinals before taking out Taylor in the decider.

Van Gerwen, also pocketed a £25,000 bonus for topping the league table during the 16-game regular season.

Surrey Storm won!

Defending champions Surrey Storm retained their Superleague title with a 55-53 victory over Manchester Thunder at the Copper Box Arena on Saturday May 7.

Super Saturday:

Approved Garages hosted a fan zone for the opening round of action at The Genting Arena Birmingham where over 50,000 fans attended on one day .There was also a Shootout Stand where fans could win a sports bundle pack.

One of the most nail-biting finishes seen in the Superleague this season saw Storm close out to take the two goal win, revenge for a single goal defeat in the 2014 Grand Final in Worcester.

Following the game, Head Coach Kathryn Ratnapala said: “What a dream come true.

The squad really couldn’t ask for any more – what an amazing season.

90 for 90:

In celebration for 90 years of England Netball, our internal netball team helped England Netball break the World Record for the longest back to back netball game in history.

(A staggering 90 hours!)

“We had to stick to our own game plan today.

Thunder have had a solid season and we were the underdogs going into the game, but it didn’t matter. The players really stepped up out there and I am so proud of them all.”
