A Letter from the President and Executive Director

Dear Bay View Members, Friends, and Supporters, We have been looking forward to this report as a high point of the year. This is the moment we pause to see what we have accomplished, measure our success, and celebrate.

Thanks to you and your generosity, together, we have accomplished so many things this year in pursuit of our mission.

In preparation for our 150th celebration in 2025, our buildings and grounds are experiencing a renaissance. We resurfaced four tennis courts, added a floating dock at the waterfront, three family restrooms, and eight Pickleball courts. Fresh paint now coats Vernor Hall, Woman’s Council, and Epworth Hall, and The Rec sports a new roof and new floor. As part of our preparation for the 150th Jubilee, our campus is refreshed and welcoming, thanks to new landscaping surrounding Hall Auditorium and Crouse Chapel and thirty-three dark-sky compliant and energy-efficient campus lights.

Newer traditions such as Woods Walk II and Music & Munchies complement beloved traditions like Sunday Vespers, Saturday sailing races, and Monday night Hot Dog Roasts. We enjoyed American Experience’s Marcia Chatelain, Puzzle Master David Kwong, and The Voice favorite - Girl Named Tom. Worship services (in-person and virtually) served thousands, and our first ever theme-week, ‘Ships Ahoy,’ showcased the behind-the-scenes restoration of NM Soldier and gave a peek at the New York Yacht Club’s storied America’s Cup trophies.

Bay View’s culture of volunteerism is strong and extends all the way to our 15-year-old Leaders-in-Training (LITs) who offer many hours of community service at Boys’ and Girls’ Club. Volunteers of every age and interest offer their labor skills and experience in every corner of Bay View and through all seasons as dedicated committees work and plan.

Campus Club, Morning Council, and Woman’s Council organize activities and fundraisers for Bay View and the wider community. Volunteers make Bay View possible.

What we are most proud of is this community. Participating in the programs, attending lectures, either in-person or virtually via SoundCloud, tending the gardens, or playing tennis and pickleball are all ways to build community. This report celebrates our accomplishments and our giving, but it really celebrates the community it takes to make our Assembly Season happen - the children, grandparents, students, faculty, members, guests, visitors, friends, volunteers, donors, and staff who come together each summer and shape our remarkable Bay View community.

Capital reserve investments are informed by the 20-year capital improvements and major maintenance plan. We strive to reserve enough funds to cover the anticipated needs for preserving our historic buildings and beautiful grounds, as well as infrastructure relating to roads and water/sewer systems.

“I’ve never lived anywhere that has volunteers like Bay View. It’s a great way to meet new people and I’ve met wonderful friends through volunteering. Without volunteering through our social clubs, we wouldn’t have the “Be Our Guest Luncheon,” croquet, or lawn bowling. The Memorial Garden is tended by volunteers. Our beloved traditional events like the Ice Cream Social and 4th of July Parade are entirely run by volunteers. Volunteers make things happen in Bay View!”

n 1875, Bay View was established as a Methodist camp meeting and quickly expanded its scope to include a summer assembly program as part of the Chautauqua Movement. Bay View created the opportunity to enrich the human experience of body, mind, and spirit through the four assembly programs.

Today’s world is different, and the pace of life is faster than ever before. Bay View remains true to its mission; offering four assembly programs to inspire and enrich individuals and families.
