A Word To The Wise...”There’s Always Free Cheese in a Mousetrap” Stimulus checks are here. I know because this past weekend “ Ya ’ l l - m a r t ” w a s packed with shopping carts filled with big screen TV’s. I’m not judging; indeed, the government intended the stimulus to help get the economy going again.

I also understand $1200 is only going so far, so spend it the way you see fit.

After all it’s your money. However, there is something you need to know.

You need to read the fine print!

To Tenants: If the government says you don’t have to pay your rent and there’s a ban on evictions, you better do whatever you can to pay your rent. There will be major repercussions when eviction bans are lifted. Don’t think you’ll get a free ride out of this.

PAY YOUR RENT! Your landlord has bills to pay too.

To Homeowners: If the government tells banks to stop mortgage payments, DO WHATEVER YOU CAN TO PAY YOUR MORTGAGE!. Some lenders are saying you don’t have to pay for 3 months, but on the 4th month, all four payments are due in full. Do not take a chance and not pay. Major fore-

closures will come from all this. The banks didn’t help homeowners in 2008-2009 and in 2020, it’s still the same.

Pay your mortgage.

If the utility company suspends payments, you better pay any amount you can! They are like banks, they will want their money eventually and when all this clears up, you’ll owe an exuberant bill and still won’t have any utilities. Pay whatever you can.

If you get a government stimulus check, this check is to help pay your bills. That means you pay your rent, your mortgage, your utilities, your insurance, your car payment, your bills.

This is not for frivolous spending.

The real problem is, many who will get the stimulus check....won’t pay their bills then will be crying and wailing saying; “They evicted me. They cut off m y p o w e r, t h e y repossessed my car...”

All while you’re broke and carrying that empty purse you bought with your stimulus check.

Just keep in mind; “There’s always free cheese in a mousetrap”

By Wane A. Hailes The Courier There is a reason why I continue to post the pie chart of Muscogee County registered voters in each issue of our paper, it is to remind each of you the power we have if we all go to the polls and exercise our right to vote.

Not only are we the majority demographic in our County but more Blacks are registered to vote here as well.

I know when it comes to elections we tend to “talk the talk” but when the votes are tallied somehow, we never seem to have “walked the walk”.

Prior to every election we have the same conversations; “We need to elect someone who looks like us, someone who represents our needs, someone, as I said earlier, who will look out for our best interest.” This has been especially true when the discussion turns to the criminal jus of Blacks currently incarcerated in the Muscogee County jail.

Every election the outcry is the same; “we need judges who understand our kids, our culture, judges who are judges who will apply sentencing accordingly within the law. It all ends up being just “lip service”.

If I’ve said it once I’ve said it a thousand times, we have got to stop holding our people to a higher standard than white folks, especially when it comes to elections and most definitely the upcoming Sheriffs election on June 9, 2020. Finally we have an opportunity to prove that the white man’s ice is no colder than our own.

Because of the power of our vote and our voter turnout we’ve elected the first female Mayor of Columbus and the first female Sheriff of Muscogee County. Don’t

Save Black Lives from COVID-19 "These are the ones that I see presenting to the clinic with COVID-19 symptoms," Blackstone stated.

Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.) led a group from congress recently in demanding that the federal government release data about racial disparities in America's response to the pandemic.

By Stacy M. Brown, NNPA Newswire Senior Correspondent @StacyBrownMedia With evidence growing that shows African Americans disproportionately affected by the novel coronavirus, just nine states and the District of Columbia have released a racial breakdown of those diagnosed with the disease.

Concerned health experts, members of the U.S. Congress, and civil rights organizations have ramped up their call for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), to provide a detailed report.

"We know that there's a disproportionate rate of infections and death nationwide," Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) Chair Karen Bass (DCalif.) stated in a conference call with the Black Press of America represented by the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA).

"It's happening in all of our [African American] communities nationwide. We feel that it's an emergency that needs to be addressed right away, and, importantly, we need data, and the CDC is not compiling data," Bass added.

Rep. Robin Kelly (D-Ill.), the chair of the CBC's Health Braintrust, agreed that statistics along racial lines are vital.

"The data already released shows troubling trends for African Americans that must be addressed to ensure public

health," Kelly stated.

African Americans makeup about 18 percent of the population in Michigan but account for approximately 40 percent of coronavirus-related deaths, according to Rep. Brenda Lawrence (D-Michigan).

"I am speaking as just one part of the major piece of concern, and that's the alarming way in how this pandemic is having an impact on our Black community," Lawrence said.

"We are the number one target for this disease. We have pre-existing conditions, and yet we're told to go home when we visit the emergency room.

We know that there must be some form of regulation in place for testing and getting testing sites and equipment into the community," Lawrence added.

A published report noted that the Louisiana Department of Health revealed that 70 percent of coronavirus deaths in the state are African American, despite Black people making up just 32 percent of the population.

In Milwaukee, Wisconsin, African Americans reportedly accounted for nearly half of coronavirus cases and more than 80 percent of deaths related to the disease.

"I have seen in my waiting room mostly Black and Brown patients who are essential workers and service workers who can't afford to stay home," Uche Blackstone, the CEO of Advancing Health Equity, told The Hill.

Pressley said she and her colleagues made clear in the letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar that the government is failing to collect and publicly report on the racial and ethnic demographic information for coronavirus tests and patients.

"Without demographic data, policymakers and researchers will have no way to identify and address ongoing disparities and health inequities that risk accelerating the impact of the novel coronavirus and the respiratory disease it causes," the letter said.

"Although COVID-19 does not discriminate along racial or ethnic lines, existing racial disparities and inequities in health outcomes and health care access may mean that the nation's response to preventing and mitigating its harms will not be felt equally in every community."

Dr. Ebony Hilton and Dr. Taison Bell, of the Virginia Medical School, have publicly demanded the release of racial data surrounding the virus.

"Release the data," stated Dr. Hilton, who continuously posts that message on social media sites like Twitter.

"We see in states that aren't reporting on racial demographics that there's been a surge in patients dying from respiratory distress and respiratory failure," Dr. Bell stated.

The NNPA and its Coronavirus Task Force was the first media related entity in the U.S. to declare a “State of Emergency for Black America” as the fatalities among Black Americans continue to rise across the nation. Using social media to increase public awareness about COVID-19, the NNPA is encouraging the use of the following hashtags: #SaveBlackLives and #NNPACoronavirusTaskForce.
