Hello

Inside

With Spring around the corner our thoughts can turn to gardening and outdoor pursuits. Grow your Own is the subject for the gardening page with Pippa Greenwood. This year we’re hoping to grow beetroot, courgettes and salad leaves. Watch this space and maybe we will get a nice vegetarian recipe in a later issue!

Talking of recipes - I’ve recently been in touch with Ella Martin who’s a local lady from Colne Engaine who has her own lifestyle website, blog, Facebook page and Instagram account all going by the name of thewildbuds. Ella has generously shared her recipe for banana and chocolate bread and you can find it on page 26. As ever, we have a comprehensive and eclectic mix of events in the What’s On pages, including some local Easter activities. Take a look and see if there’s something that takes your fancy. Please remember, if you have an event you want to promote, do get in touch. Details and deadlines can be found on the What’s On pages. I’m always so delighted when I hear our advertisers are doing well. One of our local businesses in White Colne have cause to celebrate. Pippins Montessori Nursery have once again achieved an outstanding OFSTED report. Congratulations to Sally, Lynne and the staff at Pippins. I hope you all have a great Easter and enjoy this issue of the Connection.

Country Mutters As good as a rest

In retrospect, I see clearly now that having survived nappies and the terrible two’s there exists a brief hiatus of relative calm, buckets and spades and time to smell the roses. Then before you know it, teenage hormones kick in and suddenly your house is full of sweaty men taller than you are but who are still having arguments about who nicked the last gummy bear, except now they’re conducted in booming baritones that rattle your floorboards. At this exact point your aged parents start reverting back to being children in need of care and careful guidance. You have conversations like ‘Dad, that’s the second time you’ve reversed into the gatepost in a week. Do you think maybe it’s time you thought about giving up driving?’ or ‘Mum, I don’t really think it’s a good idea to eat a chicken stew that’s been sitting in the oven for 3 days…. I know the oven was turned off but it really should have been put in the fridge, don’t you think?’ Meanwhile, your other half is fixated on throwing it all in and sailing a yacht around the world ‘before it’s too late’. Even though his naval experience has more to do with boats shaped like swans powered by his own feet.

menopause’, they reply airily – those who’ve been through it and out the other side, that is. The ones who are going through it now wring out the tea towel they’ve used to mop their brow, sit down heavily, pour you a short one, look at you sideways and drawl, ‘I’ll tell you about the menopause, babe. Hunker down, it’s going to be a long days night’. The Change? Well, I suppose if you’re the sort of person who is catapulted out of a plane onto a snowy summit, is carried down the mountain by an avalanche, falls into some rapids, is rescued by an obscure tribe who attempt to sacrifice you by fire and, having narrowly escaped all that, if you then dust off your singed hair and remark, ‘Well, that made a change’, then yes, in that case The Change is an excellent term. Otherwise, let’s think of a better name, shall we? The Conflagration? The Cataclysm? The Catastrophe? I can’t understand why it’s not talked about more often. Not with Husband, obviously, who can’t see what the fuss is all about and is convinced you just need to take your cardie off. Why isn’t there even a greetings card? There’s a card for everything now – why not the menopause? ‘Acting Strange? Must be the Change!’

Suddenly I’m the only sensible one in a sea of testosterone, mid-life anxiety and lost marbles. And when did I become the sensible one? I was a tomboy, a wild child, a free spirit of nature. And just as you’re dealing with all that, Mother Nature tiptoes up and hits you with one from left field and you wake up one morning with a panic attack, your body seemingly in the grip of a monsoon and unable to remember your own name. You timidly enquire of your friends what they think it might be. ‘Oh that – that’s the

Home & Interiors Spruce Up Your Home Office

Dodgy desk, awkward chair or overflowing shelves? It’s time to give your home office a facelift, says Katherine Sorrell Whether your working space is a corner of the kitchen used for catching up with email, or a high-spec office with everything necessary for fulltime self-employment, it needs to work for you. A few small improvements can make your workspace more comfortable, functional and attractive.

could consider adding a small worktop to one side of your existing desk, or improve your organisation with a new desk that incorporates drawers, cubby holes, shelves or whatever other type of storage you need. If you can, use nearby walls to lift as much as possible off the surface of your desk by introducing wall-mounted storage such as shelves, pin boards, peg boards or hanging racks. Anything that stacks is useful, too. Before you know it, you’ll be able to see your laptop again.

Start with a clear out and a tidy up: go through your old paperwork, stationery, books etc. and give it away, recycle it, file it well out of the way or bin it, as appropriate, and you’re bound to create extra space. Then, sort out messy cabling with extension leads, cable clips or by adding an extra double plug socket.

A lack of storage probably goes for home offices more than any other space in the house. You may be happy with buying a conventional filing cabinet and/ or bookcase, but don’t be afraid to look beyond the usual office suppliers: vintage and industrial pieces can add an element of unexpected style to brighten up your work time. Add boxes, baskets, trolleys, racks and desktop accessories in colours and textures that suit your space and personal style.

Next: your desk. If you are still running out of room, you

a facelift with the paintbrush? Neutrals are undeniably good for concentration, but go for bold colours if they make you happy. Blackboard paint comes in a range of colours and is a great option for sections of walls, desk tops or cupboard fronts where you might want to chalk up some notes. And, how about adding pretty curtains or blinds, an eye-catching rug, a display of collectibles or a dramatic painting or framed photograph? A comfortable chair is a must and an adjustable office chair on castors is best. If yours is dull or ugly, either re-upholster it, make a loose cover or, at worst, hang a length of fabric over the back and add an attractive cushion. Another essential is a good desk light – choose one that is bright, adjustable and that you love the look of. There’s an enormous choice, at prices to suit every budget. For the final details, add accessories to brighten up your life, from a good-looking waste bin to a house plant, some colourful wall art or a scented candle. Let’s face it, the more you enjoy being at work, the more productive you’ll be. Image - A good desk is essential. The new Phineas desk is made from oak and has two cubby holes, drawers, and a cut-out for cables. It costs £545 from Loaf, tel 0845 468 0698; www.loaf.com

Outstanding! Pippins Montessori Nursery is delighted to

have attained outstanding in its recent OFSTED inspection – December 2015. This top level rating has been achieved consistently by us since we opened in 1992 and details of the high standards we provide are clearly outlined in the report. You will have also seen that Montessori has been in the press recently with Prince William starting at a Montessori nursery in Norfolk. So what is so special about Montessori? Why do we at Pippins continue to offer this exceptional approach to learning? Maria Montessori (1870-1952) was ahead of her time. The first woman to become a Dr in Italy; she disguised herself as a man to achieve this! Her work and interest in children, especially those with learning difficulties, led her to develop the Montessori Method. She developed materials and methods based on her belief that education involved the unfolding and development of the child’s innate abilities, talents and interests. Her approach was scientific and humanistic. Her ideas rapidly spread around the globe resulting in training programs and schools opening throughout the world. The goals of Montessori education are to cultivate each child’s natural desire to learn, acquire and master skills, learn responsibility and cooperation and foster strong, positive feelings about oneself and others. The method addresses the total child developing social skills, emotional growth, physical coordination, and cognitive preparation, within a thoughtfully designed environment. The excellent, dedicated staff team provide this opportunity supported by many other activities which the children thoroughly enjoy – yoga, swimming, French, music, cooking to name a few. Delicious home-cooked lunches prepared by Glenda are a highlight of every day and plenty of time is spent outside enjoying the orchards and surrounding fields. Having recently been re-accredited by the Montessori Association we would be delighted to show you around our wonderful, busy and happy nursery – in fact, we may let the children do that for you! Do check out the report at www.reports.ofsted.gov.uk to learn more about us and contact Lynne, our Manager, at www. pippinsnursery.co.uk to arrange to visit. We look forward to meeting you.

It’s a Mystery Few things beat curling up with a good mystery. Whether you prefer a classic whodunit, a gritty crime novel, or a supernatural thriller, there’s sure to be something to tempt you in our pick of the latest releases. In the Dark, In the Woods – Eliza Wass While aimed at the young adult audience, In the Dark, In the Woods definitely crosses the age barrier. Castley Cresswell lives with her siblings, broken mother and domineering father, in a rundown house in the woods. Her father tells her that they are the chosen ones, and that he is God’s conduit. As with all teenagers, Castley struggles with being ‘different’ from her school peers, and starts to question her parents’ ideology. Will she find the strength to break free from her father? Will he let her? Quiet Neighbors – Catriona McPherson Needing a place to run, Jude flees to a Scottish town, and the quiet solace of the tumbledown bookstore. Staying in a gravedigger’s cottage, she begins to unravel some of the town’s closely-guarded secrets. This is a novel of quiet mysteries to puzzle over, rather than a gruesome whodunit. Nevertheless, the characters will keep you turning the pages until night has fallen and your tea has long gone cold.

12

Switcheroo – Aaron Elkins Switched identities, unsolved murders and a gorgeous setting to boot, Switcheroo has them all. This is Elkins’ 18th book featuring the forensic anthropologist Gideon Oliver, and fans say it’s one of the best to date. Investing a cold case in Jersey dating from the 1960s, Gideon discovers a web of deceit, dating to before the war, when two boys were swapped by their fathers. Not quite as gripping as some in the genre, Switcheroo is nevertheless a very enjoyable read. What She Never Told Me – Kate McQuaile Back in Ireland due to her mother’s death, Louise is hoping to finally find out who her father is. Does a stranger hold the answers? Who is the little girl in her memories and why do they leave her feeling so unsettled? A psychological thriller with twists and turns aplenty, this could well end up on this year’s bestseller list. Prepare to put everything aside for a few hours, as you won’t want to put it down. A must for fans of Before I go to Sleep, Girl on a Train and Little Face.

The Deadlock Trilogy Box Set – P.T. Hylton If you like your mysteries to have a supernatural edge to them, and more than a touch of horror, The Deadlock Trilogy needs to be on your wish list. Convict Frank returns to his childhood home - a backwater town in Tennessee - to find that things have taken a turn for the bizarre. Brilliantly original, wellplotted and skilfully narrated, this trilogy is a real find. Perfect for fans of early Stephen King. The Hollow Men - Rob McCarthy Police surgeon Dr Harry Kent is known as a man with a weakness for lost causes. So when a teenager takes a group of people hostage, then later seems to be in clear danger himself, Harry can’t help but get involved. As he works to find out what drove the boy to such desperate measures, Harry starts to uncover a trail of deception and cruelty. Gritty, tense and fast paced, this is the first in a new series starring Dr Harry Kent, and fans are already clamouring for more.

It’s 35 years since Bucks Fizz stormed to the top of the charts around the world after winning The Eurovision Song Contest for the UK with the skirt ripping song “Making Your Mind Up”! The Band’s line up is classic Eurovision – two boys, two girls, dance routines, harmonies and extravagant outfits. Cheryl Baker, Mike Nolan and Jay Aston are joined by Bobby McVay, himself a Eurovision veteran having represented the UK in 1983 with the band, Sweet Dreams, singing “I’m Never Giving Up”, which came a credible sixth in the competition. Cheryl says, “I cannot believe it is 35 years we won The Eurovision Song Contest! We are looking forward to celebrating with fans old and new. Cleaning for the Queen!

Colchester Community Voluntary Services are calling for volunteers to join them in sprucing up Colchester in support of the national Clean for The Queen campaign to clean up Britain in time for Her Majesty The Queen’s 90th birthday, which will be officially celebrated in June. Tracy Rudling, Chief Executive Officer of CCVS said, ‘We’re calling on all groups out there who would like to improve an area – it could be a street, a housing estate, a building, a park or anywhere you think needs a bit of tender loving care – to sign up and make a difference to their local community. We would encourage any group who is interested to get in touch with us and help make Colchester a place we can all be proud of.’ Individuals can also get involved by calling the CCVS office and registering their interest to take part in organised clean-up events throughout the year. Streets and open spaces across the borough can all benefit from litter picks and other improvement activities. People can also bid for funding to clear or renovate an area. Colchester Borough Council, working with CCVS, is offering grants of up to ÂŁ500 to enable community groups to pay for equipment or skip hire to help tackle overgrown areas, graffiti and more. Applicants can submit requests for clean-up activities and projects that support the wellbeing of their local communities throughout the year. Volunteers and groups can get in touch with Colchester CVS by calling 01206 505250 or apply for funding at www.ccvs.org/news

TV success for Colchester designer. Colchester based designer Lucy Tiffney describes how she ‘loved every minute’ of taking part in the BBC series The Great Interior Design Challenge. But it wasn’t the excitement of appearing on television she most enjoyed. She says: ‘For me, it was all about designing the rooms but also meeting the clients and seeing their reactions when they saw what I had done. That was amazing.’ The show challenged each of the contestants to come up with 6 different schemes for real life clients living in very different properties: from bedrooms in medieval cottages to farmhouse kitchens. She explains the process: ‘The production team would send me a design brief and I would then have a week to design it and buy everything I needed with a budget of £1,000. Two days before they would tell me where the hotel was but I would only find out where the house was the night before filming.’ Although the contestants were described as amateur designers, Lucy was not short of experience, having worked in London for 18 years as a studio manager for a rug designer and designing her own rugs. Lucy was born in Maldon and when her own children were still small, she returned to her roots to settle in Colchester, running her own design company and teaching textile design at Colchester Institute. Lucy had applied previously to the show without success but persistence paid off when she tried again this year and she became one of 16 contestants out of 4,000 applicants. Just pipped at the post in the final to become the runner up, she has every reason to be proud of coming so far. She says: ‘I have learned so much, but the biggest thing this has given me is the confidence to know I can design such different spaces and make them look great.’ Lucy describes her style as ‘modern, bright, fresh and happy’ and you can see more of her distinctive projects at www.lucytiffney.com You can also follow her on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

The Oscars 2016 This years Oscars came and went, not without the controversy surrounding accusations of racism, but there were high points in spite of this. The Revenant won the (well deserved) award for best director and at last Leonardo Di Caprio won his Oscar for best male actor with a stunning and gripping physical performance. Another film that shone was Spotlight, winning best picture award and best original screenplay with absorbing performances from an ensemble cast. However let’s look at Stephen Spielberg’s latest film Bridge Of Spies, for which Mark Rylance won the award for best supporting actor. Set in the Cold War, Bridge Of Spies centres around the true story about the trade of soviet mole, Rudolf Abel (Mark Rylance) for American U-2 pilot, Francis Gray Powers (Austin Stowell),

shot down by the Soviets and an American student, Frederic L. Pryor (Will Rogers), who finds himself on the wrong side of the Berlin Wall. So the pieces are set and here to make the trade is (lawyer) James B. Donovan (Tom Hanks). Bridge Of Spies is an expertly directed movie that captures the audience’s attention in every turn. This dark and gripping thriller captures the true horror of the cold war. Tom Hanks creates a truly believable character but I think the real star of the movie is Mark Rylance who gives a standout performance as the Soviet mole making him a character that we can really feel for and care about. Stephen Spielberg has once again proved his skills with a brilliant, atmospheric thriller that will keep you enthralled.

Easter Recipe

Banana and Chocolate Bread This is an easy peasy way to use up those left spotty bananas in your fruit bowl. Using coconut flour makes it gluten-free and the dark chocolate chips give it the edge. Perfect for that 3pm slump. Accessorise with a cuppa and enjoy.

Ingredients:

• Three ripe, brown spotted bananas 55g almond butter Two eggs 110g coconut flour 110g dark chocolate chips One teaspoon vanilla extract ½ teaspoon bicarb of soda ½ teaspoon baking powder ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon ¼ teaspoon pink Himalayan salt

Preheat oven to 180 degrees. Line a loaf tin with paper. In an electric mixer add the bananas, vanilla essence and almond butter. Mix until creamy. Add eggs one by one until combined then add all other ingredients apart from chocolate chips. Mix well then gently fold in the chocolate chips. Ingredients can be found in all good health food shops. For more healthy living ideas visit; www.thewildbuds.co.uk or come and find our Facebook page www.facebook.com/thewildbuds for exclusive content, recipes and our latest news.

26

Pour into tin and bake for around 30 minutes. Good way to test loaf is ready is if you insert a skewer and it comes out clean.

5 Remove from oven and place on

wire rack to cool. Leave for around 45 minutes then remove from tin and place back on rack to cool completely.

Go On, Grow Your Own! by Pippa Greenwood

Enjoying a delicious meal which includes some home grown ingredients is a wonderful feeling – it fills you full of just the right sort of pride (and maybe even a little bit of smugness!). It simply feels good to indulge in a bit of Grow Your Own and then reap the rewards. You may well have been sowing and potting on vegetables for a while now, but if you’re behind schedule or haven’t produced vegetables before, don’t panic – there’s still time to grow just about any crop in your plot this year. Most plants can be raised from seed now, but there are a few that are likely to give a much better yield with an earlier start. Instead, buy in plants of crops such as tomatoes, sweet peppers, chilli peppers, melons and aubergines over the next month or so. Some vegetables can be directly sown now into wellprepared garden soil in a suitable spot in all but the coolest gardens – beetroot, lettuce, beans, peas, carrots, rocket, spinach to name but a few. Slightly more tender crops such as sweetcorn, squash and courgettes fare better if given a bit of extra heat when you are germinating the seeds, which

28

is where an electrically heated propagator really comes into its own. The seedlings may then need pricking out and potting on until they are sturdy enough to live in the great outdoors, but try to ‘harden off’ the young plants before placing them into their final positions as they may be damaged by cold, wind or rain. Put the young plants outside on warm days once the weather has stabilised, and bring them back under cover at night. Leave them outside after a week or so, covering them with fleece at night to let them acclimatise.

To save time, you can buy in small plants and you will get a good range from seed merchants or garden centres, but if you would like advice from me to ensure great results, don’t forget that you can still order garden-ready plants, accompanied by weekly advice and tips emails specific to the vegetables you’ve chosen to grow. There are more details at www.pippagreenwood.com/ grow-your-own and you can use the code 12419-E7SPS at the checkout to get £4.00 discount, whichever pack size you choose. Garden-ready plants can be planted out immediately and, provided you follow the instructions, keep

them well-watered during drier weather and apply feed at regular intervals, you will soon be harvesting crops such as climbing French and runner beans, tomatoes, sweetcorn, sugar-snap peas, peppers, chillies, onions, melons, butternut squash, beetroot and courgettes.

Most vegetables need a good fertile soil and a sunny or partly shaded spot, so choose your growing area with care. If space is limited, don’t worry – most vegetables will do well in good sized containers (minimum 30cm x 30cm x 30cm) with good-quality compost, though bigger pots will need less frequent watering. But, whether you plant and sow vegetables in pots, tubs, greenhouses or open ground, the end result will be gorgeous tasting, superfresh vegetables. So go on, get growing! Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com for ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ - fantastic UK grown vegetable plants of your choice plus weekly advice and tips emails from Pippa, Nemaslug, biological controls, pop-up crop covers, signed books and lots more besides.
