hat is the name of your organization? Five Branches University, Graduate School of Traditional Chinese Medicine What is the focus of your university? They have two main focuses: to provide an outstanding education in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and provide the highest TCM healthcare possible. Five Branches University (FBU) has a graduate program that offers both a Masters and a Doctorate degree. Their postgraduate program has two levels: A Doctorate in clinical medicine and A Ph.D. program which is in coordination with their affiliated universities in China. Five Branches Universities have two health clinics, one at their Santa Cruz Campus and one at their San Jose Campus, where they

treat 160 patients per day. Each patient’s appointment is for one full hour including an in-depth interview with a TCM diagnosis and a Western diagnosis. The Western diagnosis examines the major complaint (the headache, backache, etc.) and the TCM diagnosis looks for the root cause of the symptom. Based on the diagnosis, they perform an acupuncture treatment and prescribe an herbal treatment, along with lifestyle change recommendations. An example of a root cause is a man coming in who was suffering with asthma (symptom), and the root

cause was discovered to be that he had too much heat in his body caused by eating too many spicy foods and food cooked at high heat (BBQ), as well as drinking alcohol.

What inspired you to get into this type of work? In 1984, Ron Zaidman, Co-Founder, President and CEO of Five Branches University, was looking to do meaningful with his life. He was living in Santa Cruz, studying Buddhism and the martial arts, and he happened to read a book called, The Web That Has No Weaver by Ted Kaptchuk, a Harvard Graduate. The impact from the book and from his personal experience with TCM, Ron decided he wanted to

pursue an education in Traditional Chinese Medicine. At the time, the only university to offer such courses was in Boston. Since Ron didn’t want to leave Santa Cruz, he decided to start his own TCM University with the help of two friends. How does one become a student at FBU? Call their admissions

staff at either their Santa Cruz Campus or their San Jose Campus. Their admissions staff is comprised of graduates of FBU and they can share a lot of information about their programs, as well as answer all of a prospective student’s questions. A prospective student needs three years of college, and a desire to become a new kind of doctor. FBU invites interested potential students to become a “Student For a Day” via their Campus Open House events that happen periodically throughout the year. Those who are interested or curious about being a FBU student can come to the respective campuses and not only sit in on the classes, but

also receive a free treatment from an intern. How does one become a patient at FBU? Patients should call the front desk for information about the specialties of their practitioners, the types of appointments and treatments available, and the different price levels of treatments. Their front desk staff is very knowledgeable and well informed about their services. FBU has 30 specialized faculty practitioners on staff. A patient can get a private appointment with a faculty practitioner, or a teaching clinic appointment. There are two types of teaching

clinic appointments: one with the faculty performing the treatment with the students observing, and the other with a senior intern performing the treatment with the faculty observing. What will a student learn at FBU? FBU students will learn from highly skilled and experienced teachers who have a strong foundation in both Chinese and Western medicine. The FBU faculty is passionate about students achieving academic excellence and eager to assist students in their personal growth and success as a TCM practitioner. Students will learn acupuncture, herbal medicine, dietetics, Qi Gong, Tuina massage, and energetics and receive expert instruction in both the classroom and clinical settings. I

t started out as a challenging situation, as most great endeavours do. It wasn’t the first time I would stand in line for an entire day just to weigh in for an event. Irritated, hungry, edgy, we stood. In the baking Hawaiian sun or the intense Florida heat, we stood, waiting. Many lost the fight before they ever weighed in. Many more just left out of frustration before their feet ever touched the scale. Was it all part of the plan? Tire them out. Wear them down. Break them. Or was it just a lack of organization? “Them, who’s “them? The first Americans to compete in our beloved Brazilian jiu jitsu on our home soil. “Hey, that weighin line is moving a lot faster, but you have to speak Portuguese to be in it. So we waited. In retrospect and, to their credit and my pleasure and dismay, I was shuttled through a small hole in the wall, at the Tijiuca tennis stadium outside of Rio, while competing at the world championships. Apparently the roles were reversed as I watched the Brasileiros have to wait , as I, an Americano , was led directly to the scale. Times have changed but you can’t make this stuff up. Back in the states, I obviously realized that to change anything

the sole purpose of testing ones meddle. From those trying times, the Rumble in the Redwoods was manifested. Brazilian jiu jitsu has come a long way in the last two decades. Weigh-ins are much more timely. Bracketing software allows for up to the minute updates at the bigger venues. Professional referees add to the validity of the events. It’s not just Americans and Brazilians anymore. We are now truly on the global stage. There are tournaments held almost every weekend, an unthinkable accomplishment twenty years ago. Yet still it comes down to the athlete as performer. Without them, there

is no show. Treat them fairly, do your best to give them the best. It’s a win/win. Of course, things can and will go wrong. There is always something that will throw a wrench into the system. All things considered however, things are much better and we are all the better for it. Fair unbiased judging is absolutely essential, so we make it a priority to get the top referees. Safe mat areas and organized competitive pools help to expedite the process. Volunteers, lots and lots of volunteers to help with everything from set up to take down. A vision of symbiosis, where the athletes, staff, and spectators emerge as one entity. All for the benefit of evolving our art. For there inevitably comes a time, in all endeavours, that the fruits of your labor ripen. The taste is bold and brilliant. The energy sings to the skies. The time when all the elements combine, if even for a split second. Athletes intensely engaged, spectators enamored with the game, staff and crew working hard behind the scenes. Listen for the roar of the crowd. That’s the sign.

Professor Chris Smith is the tournament director of the 12th annual Rumble in the Redwoods Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competition held on 2/11/17 at DeAnza college in Cupertino Ca. . Getting a Clear Cranio-Sacral Rhythm

T

by Sylvia Skefich, D.C. he cranio-sacral rhythm is the “heart beat” of the spine. The rhythm (or pulse) circulates spinal fluid, lymph, and is connected to fluid circulation in all systems in the body. The craniosacral pulse is very slow Sylvia and very subtle, but is a true mechanical pulsation. There are various types of blockages that can interfere with the cranio-sacral rhythm. TRAUMA PATTERNS Old, healed traumas can leave imprints of physical restriction on the cranio-sacral rhythm. Physical traumas heal with scarring. Even if you cannot see the scarring, microscopic buildup of collagen and fibrinogen fibers lay down wherever there was inflammation to tighten up and heal an injury. Now imagine that your tissues are like a complex spider web. Now imagine part of the web had thickened. The web would move differently there. In fact the thickening may even strain nearby web lines, causing them to thicken too. STRESS PATTERNS Think of stress patterns as habitual postural strains from mental windup. Whenever there is stress in the brain, the body follows by drawing up and in, and getting ready to spring. The body does not know the difference between mental/emotional stress versus physical stress (the kind where we run or fight). Some people have their shoulders up around their ears all the time. Other people get cold, painful or numb hands in response to shoulder girdle tension. Other people have a chronic ache in the hip or low back, from being mildly torqued all the time, like on a starting line. SYSTEMIC PATTERNS Systemic (meaning, affecting the whole body) tension patterns can be caused from chronic foodcaused chemical inflammation. For example, the tension can come from a habit of too much salt causing tissue turgor. Another cause of

inflammation can come from hormonal imbalances. Even a one-time or a chronic history of fevers, exposure to medications, or vaccinations can stiffen the whole body. This type of tension can be hard to diagnose as the exact Skefich cause, but can often be softened or alleviated with cranio-sacral technique. EMOTIONAL PATTERNS Emotions can contribute to tension patterns, too. Santa Cruz and the Central Coast technique is such a subtle mechanical technique that it can be easily merged with energetic techniques. Some of the most profound work can be done with attention to the physical and the energetic realms simultaneously. When the practitioner includes a “listening-to” of the emotional “tone” stored in the tissue, there can be an even better improvement in the cranio-sacral rhythm that did not come from the mechanic work alone. Sylvia Skefich is a Doctor of Chiropractic and has been practicing Osteopathic style Cranio-Sacral Technique and energy work for 17 years. Christine Bayless is her protégé. moving rapidly towards the nerve. To my way of thinking, it is far more beneficial to expose a small portion of your body (teeth) to digital diagnostic x-rays once every 12-18 months to prevent the possibility of losing a tooth or having a root canal performed. And again, with digital x-rays, the level of radiation exposure has been reduced another 90% over the faster film alternatives of the last 20 years. The consequences of losing a tooth or carrying a dead one around in your head for the remainder of your life certainly outweighs the risk of minimal exposure to the radiation. Doesn’t it?

Maybe it’s time to re-evaluate your resistance to periodic digital x-rays. Your tooth or your life. Rub each sweet potato with coconut oil and place in the oven for 25-30 minutes or until fork tender. While the sweet potatoes are cooking, in a bowl, make the guacamole. Start by mashing the avocado and then add the tomato, onion, jalapeño, lime juice, and cilantro. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Set aside.

When the sweet potatoes are done, take them out of the oven. Cut each one in half and scoop out half of the filling. Set the filling aside. Sprinkle some of the black beans and cheese on each sweet potato half and place back in the oven to melt the cheese, 3-4 minutes. When melted, take out of the oven and top with a scoop of guacamole. Enjoy! Notes **Please use all organic ingredients if possible** Use leftover sweet potato filling as a side dish or freeze for later. If you know someone who would love a recipe like this – please share! Who knows maybe they will make you some! Xo, Vani http://www.FoodBabe.com Printed with permission.

UNCONDITIONAL LOVE:

Love Without Condition

Sandy and the Black-headed Python. We are One and at Peace with each other (23rd Nov 2014).

SOUTHERN LIGHTS by ARTIST: Kagaya

by Sandy Stevenson love you as you are, as you seek to find your own special way to relate to the world. I honour your choices to learn in the way you feel is right for you. I know it is important that you are the person you want to be and not someone that I or others think you 'should' be. I realize that I cannot know what is best for you, although perhaps sometimes I think I do. I do not know what you have chosen to learn, how you have chosen to learn it, with whom or in what time period. I have not been where you have been, looking at life through your eyes, so how can I know what you need. I allow you to be in the world without a thought or word of judgement from me about the deeds you undertake. I see no error in the things you say and do. In this place where I am, I see that there are many ways to perceive and experience the different facets of our world. I allow without reservation the choices you make in each moment. I make no judgement of this, for if I would deny your right to your evolution, then I would deny that right for myself and all others. To those who would choose a way I cannot walk, whilst I may not choose to add my power and my energy to this way, I will never deny you the gift of love that God has bestowed within me, for all creation. As I love you, so I shall be loved. As I sow, so shall I reap. I allow you the universal right of free will to walk your own path, creating steps or to sit awhile if that is what is right for you. I will make no judgement that these steps

are large or small, nor light or heavy or that they lead up or down, for this is just my viewpoint. I may see you do nothing and judge it to be unworthy and yet it may be that you bring great healing as you stand blessed by the Light of God. I cannot always see the higher picture of Divine order. For it is the inalienable right of all life to choose their own evolution and with great love I acknowledge your right to determine your future. In humility I bow to the realization that the way I see as best for me does not have to mean it is also right for you. I know that you are led as I am, following the inner excitement to know your own path. I know that the many races, religions, customs, nationalities and beliefs within our world, bring us great richness and allow us the benefit and teachings of such diverseness. I know we each learn in our own unique way in order to bring that love and wisdom back to the whole. I know that if there were only one way to do something, there would need only be one person. I will love even if you behave differently than I think you should or believe

differently than I do. I understand you are truly my brother and my sister, though you may have been born in a different place and believe in another God than I. The love I feel is for all of God's world. I know that every living thing is a part of God and I feel a love deep within for every person, animal, tree and flower, every bird, insect, river and ocean and for all the creatures in all the world. I live my life in loving service, being the best me I can, becoming wiser in the perfection of Divine truth, becoming happier in the joy of Unconditional Love. T he W riting of Unconditional Love …

'Unconditional Love' is up on many web sites, is in 'The Awakener' and my new book and has been printed in lots of magazines around the world... but I have never written about how it came to be. Of the things I have written, ‘Unconditional Love’ is my favorite. In essence, I believe we all wrote it.

I was visiting a friend of mine who had a few friends staying with them. I was talking with someone I could see had difficulty loving anyone much. Their conversation was racist and judgmental and they were convinced there were large numbers of the population that we were not meant to or able to love. As I was listening, I realized I didn’t hear this view expressed often, perhaps because my own friends tend to not be judgmental. I believe everything we encounter in life has a reason and a learning and I realized this viewpoint must be a reflection of other similar viewpoints. I went home that day and wrote ‘Unconditional Love.’ With the Grace of God, it has now been read by many thousands of people. From the letters and comments I've received, it seems it has helped. The person who originally had expressed their view that love didn't solve anything, actually perhaps inadvertently (or perhaps not!) helped create more love. We see by this example that by expressing their viewpoint, they helped make a difference. When we grasp the higher perspective of life,

we see a planet full of people that are all helping each other to learn and grow. Just think of that — everyone is helping everyone else — without exception. What a magical gift we are offered within all the events of our life. Each presenting us with wonderful opportunities to look and learn and gain a greater understanding, compassion and love for all those we share this beautiful planet with. I am so grateful for each moment of each day. I can remember when I really experienced ‘gratitude’. Some years back, suddenly I just got it — a magical moment when I realized the magnitude and beauty of the Divine plan within the Universe. That moment of understanding brought an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for everyone and everything that existed. All of it — everyone — was helping me! Wow! And I was helping too. May each perfect moment continue to bring that which helps me grow and become the best me I can be. What a perfect day. THE POWER OF SYNERGY

T

hrough the use of Synergy (Love, Wisdom and Power), we, humanity can effortlessly expand the good, through our intention to do so . . . YES! . . . Synergy is natural magic, a universal law, which exists in our infinitely abundant and compassionate universe . . . Through the power of Synergy, we have an invaluable tool for healing the Earth and each other . . . Synergy dramatically promotes our ability to expand in consciousness, and thereby positively add to the greater good. Synergy allows us to become conscious co-creators, and thus become highly effective, active participants in the grand awakening into higher consciousness... The consciousness of oneness . . . Simply put, Synergy is "energy that expands through cooperation." A power is generated in coop-

erative endeavors which far exceeds the capabilities of any individual acting alone. Synergy is a way in which the Universal Mind rewards loving relationships, especially those which are in purposeful service to the greater whole. Synergy is a key to the geometric expansion of consciousness. . . The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. . . The cosmos actually expands when we are in agreement with the primal Will-to-Good. The ancient Greeks were aware of the law of increase through partnership. They observed that the Life Power responds to what they called agape, "brotherly/ sisterly love." The Greek word synergos means "working together." Buckminster Fuller, who coined the word Synergy, defines it as "synthesis plus energy." According to Webster's

Dictionary, synergism is "an ancient theological doctrine holding that in regeneration there is cooperation of divine grace and human activity." The Law of Synergy appears in The Bible in Matthew 18:20, "For where two or three gathered together in my name There Am I in the midst of them." . . . CONSCIOUS NETWORKI NG E M PL OY S T HE POWER OF SYNERGY . . . In the regenerative process, our first and greatest partner is the universe itself. The affirmation, "I am in synergistic relationship with the universe," exponentially amplifies and enhances our effectiveness. When we align with each other with pure intention for good, "The combined energy creates a power exponent which is the quotient of one

third our number. . . God Geometrizes (Example: A group of twelve would create an exponent of four. 12 divided by 3 equals 4. Therefore the exponent would be 12 to the fourth power, or 20,736!)" —Quote from Kryon: The End Times, by Lee Carroll. Just imagine all the ways we can synergize to further our planetary and cosmic awakening! Gatherings of Lightworkers, networking groups,

ANIMAL HERO: BEAR by Simone from Woodlands

ear is a Shiloh German Shepard, from Millsap, Texas. He began as a shelter dog at the Weatherford shelter, kept in the back because nobody wanted him. His owner Debbie Zeisler came to the shelter in search for a dog, for her mother. When she saw Bear, it was obvious he was the one for her. Bear could tell that too. The two became very close in such a short time. But everything was perfect, until eighteen years ago, when Debbie had a horseback riding accident, causing daily seizures to occur. During May, Debbie Zeisler had a seizure in her front yard, L C E RE QU falling down E O the stairs and hitting her head in the process. She soon became CARING PEOPLE...CARING FOR PETS unconscious. ously trying to get someone's attention. He went over to find out what was going on. When he approached, Bear pulled him in Debbie's direction. By then she was conscious, and the animal control officer called for help. When the ambulance came, Bear even hopped in with Debbie! The amazing thing about Bear is that he was never trained, but he can tell the signs of seizures, and is able to alert Debbie before anything happens. To alert Debbie he leans on her legs. Once Bear leans on her legs she knows to sit down before any injury or dangers can happen. When Debbie does not listen to Bear's warning, she can fall. When she does, Bear is ready, and can retrieve her medicine. He might stay with her, whatever he thinks is the right thing to do. Some of the signals Bear recognizes is the scent of ketosis, which smells like nail polish remover. This is caused by the dropping of blood sugar in her body. Other than that, nobody knows how dogs predict the seizures before they happen. Most dogs that are trained

or learn how to help their owner during the seizure, don't predict before it occurs, and warn their owner. Like Bear, dogs that do predict the seizure before it happens are not trained, but randomly occur as something like another sense. Bear took the stage in Los Angeles. He and Debbie went to receive Bear's award. He was presented the 30th National Hero Dog Award by the Society of Prevention for cruelty to Animals. With the award and plaque he got free dog food for a year. He also received a trip to California at Huntington Beach in the Oceanfront Hotel. Bear was unwanted at the beginning of his life and in the end, he had saved his owner’s life more than she can count. Bear is a hero because he never gave up while looking for help. He found a way to help his owner, and he was always by her side. He always does the best he can to make sure his owner is safe. He proved determination, persistence, inspiration, and love. I don't see why Bear could not be a hero. Written by Simone from Woodlands. Change is Inevitable...

ntering a year of uncertainty, I feel like I’m standing on a precipice of all possibility. What will evolve; what challenges will we have to meet? Will we be closer to peace or war worldwide? Likely, both; we’re manifest in duality after all. Opposites coexist. There seems to be a divide among the populace, a discrepancy between what is and what is desired. The rich appear to flourish while the poor perish. The inequity between the haves and the have nots has existed throughout human history. It breeds revolution and its natural component, change. Believe we will fare well or fear the future, the choice is ours to make and responding actions to take. What we picture grows to actuality. It becomes something, hopefully what is truly desired. No matter the appearance of worldly happenings, we can and I believe, must cultivate our higher selves, our divine characteristics: compassion, respect for one another, tolerance of differences, mercy—to name a few. Choosing love over fear is not so easy when passions flare, but those reactionary moments are testing places. What we do with our various intense emotions is where we are at choice. “The Devil made me do it” is a cop-out. Choosing to act on our highest thoughts helps forge a world of peace and prosperity. As we sow,

so shall we reap. Sometimes our blessing is that we have survived to live another day, and we have another day to cultivate love and to enjoy our creative intelligence. Ruminating after meditation recently, this poem came through: I’m floating off-world immersed in deep silence— neutral buoyancy space or ocean fed, no matter—it’s the same. Occurrence swirls around the quiet soul— Buddha underneath the Bodhi tree. And even that doesn’t matter.

Just Being here...now. Each day is a blessing, offering opportunity to choose the path we take that day. One day at a time, we build the world. Meantime, you can email us at: awaken@ConnectionMagazineOnline.com We have included a letter that has been published in our magazine for a couple of months. It tells a few of the things that Connection Magazine has done to help educate you, the Readers, save our lives, etc., etc. Good letter (thank you Theodora); why reinvent the wheel? Thank you again for your participation with us, with Connection Magazine ~ “Conscious Living & Healthy Lifestyles” • MIND • BODY • SPIRIT • EARTH • HEART • And, thank you very much to the lovely people that have called us through the years to thank us for the magazine, commend our courage to tell the truth (at the expense of our own lives and livelihood), and put out current news, info, alternative and healthful ways to make each of our lives better. So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish, With love, light, gratitude, Pattie Mills and Thom Coby P.S. See you in English! Thanks for ‘all the fish’, and . . . ‘thank you very much, enjoy the great day!’ The following letter was published in the magazine in September 2016. Please read it as a recap to some of the things which Connection Magazine has presented. Thank you!) Dear Reader, Editor’s Note: A similar such letter was sent to one woman who would no longer read this magazine [due to one particular feature/article] in it, even though she had been a Reader for many years. This was the response sent to her [several minor changes]. This seemed like good info for everyone. As you may know, we (Pattie & Thom) have published Connection Magazine for over 25 years. During that time, we have been front and center in both educating you about the many health challenges we face from toxic corporate products and empowering you to act effectively against the governmental policies that attempt to force these products on us. In the late ‘90’s, we joined with some of you to stop the state mandated fluoridation of our drinking water. Thus began a 2-year campaign, with Connection Magazine leading the charge to educate our community about how toxic fluoride was, how many worldclass scientists and 1st-world countries opposed it, and how this agenda to fluoridate was driven

work and publishing. We were and are fortunate to have Theodora Kerry work with us in a number of capacities (researcher, journalist, music media, distribution, assistant, etc.). Renowned ‘Visionary Artist’ Author and Tarot Deck Creator, Melanie Gendron, joined our Graphic Arts Staff many years ago. Melanie is a big part of this edition and we thank her for her creativity, hard work and perseverance through the long night hours with us for many years, now. Mike deGive has done Graphic Arts design with us as well as Kevin of Shimmering Wolf Graphics. Dossie Saccomano was such an awesome Office Manager (at 317 Cedar St., SC), thank you! We have worked with other folks throughout the 25 years and we thank them each for their hard work or their hard lessons in learning for ‘us’. Connection Magazine has presented so much honest and tough information through the years—renowned for its COURAGE and perseverance! We are proud of the info that we have presented and the risks and the prejudices we have taken and endured from various people/groups. We are truthfully tired (a due date each month; every month for 25 years—that means 300 issues in a row, every month for 25 years.) [and, we have lived ‘to tell the tale’, AND, are still very nice folks! Tee hee hee hee hee!]. We are intelligent people who are also exhausted. And, after thoroughly reviewing the two new laws that Obama signed in: October 1st – Obama hands over control of the Internet to International Control (giving up control by the USA). Opening the door to Chinese style censorship. He turns ‘it over’ to the U.N. And . . . December 24th - Obama signed into effect (on Christmas Eve), “The Disinformation Act” (where people who are vocal about things like: vaccines, GMOs, chemtrails, TPP, Fluoride, Electro-Magnetic Pollution, Chemtrails, Black-Box Voting, Fukushima, etc, etc. can be investigated, questioned and even incarcerated for being Russian collaborators for just telling the truth about what our big government, corporate controlled, big pharma control system is doing to us without necessarily telling us the truth about what is happening.) In other words: tell the truth; pay big consequences. We can’t stop ourselves from telling the truth, if we are publishing, so we have decided to stop publishing. You that are awake and aware know everything you need to know, and we lovingly pass the Torch to you to awaken your friends and loved ones. We have put the info out there for those that are open, inquisitive, and want to live in a positive life-affirming world. Therefore, it is time for us to say ‘adieu’ and a BIG THANK YOU to so many folks: you the Readers, Columnists, Businesses, Advertisers, our Staff, etc. Wishing you health, happiness and peace on earth to live your Life. A extra BIG thanks to: Marcia Clanton, Donna Wms-Smith, Bette Tennant, Anne Coby, Melanie Gendron, Theodora Kerry, Jan Benner, Bill Pooley, Mike deGive, Taale Rosellini, Shari Rose and Kevin Bush as well as Bruce Tanner, Drew Lewis, Foster & Kimberly Gamble, Dr. Wayne Dyer, Hugh & Gayle Prather and Barry & Joyce Vissell. Dear Readers, Friends, Colleagues, Businesses & Advertisers, A ‘quarter-of-a-century’ —25 years ago, a couple (a Health Practitioner/Massage Body Therapist with a degree in Psychology, plus Engineering & Anatomy) and his wife (a Teacher & National Teacher Trainer; ITI & BodybrainCompatible Educator; with degrees in Psychology, Humanities, Lifetime Teaching Credential, Conflict Resolution, etc.), living a healthy lifestyle themselves, decided to create a monthly magazine that was free, in hardcopy print and distributed in Santa Cruz & Monterey Counties. Pattie and Thom began this adventurous journey together with Pattie’s mom, Bette, right in sync—an integral part all the way. Soon two dear friends, Marcia & Donna joined in and worked and gave so much to this endeavor. Bette always referred to them as ‘our angels’. So true is that! Connection Magazine expanded to also be distributed throughout the 5 counties of: SC, Monterey, Santa Clara, San Mateo and San Benito Counties. This magazine was evolved in a very thoughtful manner; very intentionally. Featuring many areas of health, fitness, FUN, art, adventure and awareness—the community has been educated in many regards. The monthly Columnists educated the Readers about the “best-of-the-best” healthful remedies, solutions, ideas, mediums, etc., etc. We thank them each and all very, very much! And, a special thank you to the following Columnists who remained integral parts of Connection Magazine for years and gave a lot to the Community and the World with their expert information: Dr. David Biles, Dr. Sylvia Skefich, Dr. Randy Baker, Megan Montero, Barry & Joyce Vissell, Joanne Justis, Karin Leonard, Daniel Robin, Janet Leonard, Meghann Finn, Susan Heinz, Christopher Love, Robert LaRosa, Donna Wms-Smith, Melanie Gendron, Ted Mancuso, Aaron Caravel, Allen Morgan and Gina Locatelli. We thank every Contributor, Advertiser, and Reader throughout all of the 25+ years of hard

by a profit-hungry chemical industry that would otherwise have to pay to store this toxic waste product. This campaign and the subsequent successful initiative—we mounted to call for a public vote before any fluoridation began, and is the reason no one in Santa Cruz County is drinking fluoridated water! Hopefully you’re also aware that Connection Magazine began educating about the dangers of GMO foods many years before any local, state, or national efforts to label GMO’s, and once these movements began, Connection Magazine was the only local publication to regularly support these efforts. Long before smart meters were installed on our homes, Connection Magazine regularly published articles about the health issues caused by exposure to the EMF radiation emitted by cell towers & cell phones. We were also the only media to keep you informed in the late ‘90’s about the small cadre of activists who actively lobbied both the city and county to create regulations for the siting of cell towers in order to keep them away from neighborhoods, schools, and hospitals. I want to also mention our many months of reporting on citizen efforts to stop the statemandated aerial spraying to “eradicate” the light brown apple moth in 2007. While many were sickened during the 2 days of low-flying airplanes spraying us with an untested, uncertified chemical, the mainstream media reported these injuries as the result of over-active imaginations, and even made fun of those injured. Not Connection Magazine, however, where these injuries were reported as legitimate, and the logical result of being exposed to poison. The quick growth of this movement to “Stop the Spray” ultimately led to its cancellation. When the EPA later denied this chemical certification, as it was unsafe to spray on people, you didn’t read that in the Sentinel, Good Times, or other local rag, but you did read about it in Connection Magazine. We’ve also been active for many years in informing readers about the dangers of vaccines. When opposition to SB277, the mandatory vaccine bill for children, began to build, which local media did their turn to in order to reach out to the larger community? That’s right: Connection Magazine where we continue to publish news of this movement. Finally, for those of you who welcome the reform of marijuana laws, I ‘ll remind you that for over a decade now Connection Magazine has committed at least one page each month to ongoing education about the health benefits of cannabis as well as informing readers about the continuing successes of the reform movement throughout the U.S. . We have received mixed reviews for our article on the Presidential candidates in our May Issue. In responding to the critical feedback, we can only point out that given our long history of reporting on the many health issues listed above, many of which are the direct result of policies created by our elected representatives, it is only logical that we would focus on what the candidates’ stances are on these issues. And, it takes quite a bit of “due diligence” to find out some of these stances since they are not covered by the mainstream media, which finds no dangers in fluoridation, pesticide spraying of urban populations, GMO’s, mandatory vaccines, nor EMF radiation. A Lot to be Thankful ForSanta Cruz Music Scene! Concerts in Retro: his past month brought some brilliant music to our cozy beach town of Santa Cruz. I found myself walking into crowded boisterous music venues that we are so lucky to have here; (The Catalyst Club, Moes Alley, and Kuumbwa Jazz Club to name a few) and thinking what a lucky music lover I am to be able to experience all walks of music any given night. From hip-hop, jazz, reggae, jamtronica and psychedelic rock and roll. Yes, you read that right, jamtronica. What is jamtronica you may ask? Jamtronica is a mix of jam-rock and electronica; essentially dance or trance music played with live instruments. Jamtronica is a growing music genre started in the United States in the mid-90’s. The genre is essentially a live band playing techno or electronica without any significant use of DJ’s or samples. It was in some ways born out of the band Phish’s forays into funk influenced electronic music, but the band to really kick it off was the Disco Biscuits, formed in 1995. Since then it has expanded, and other notable bands now include Sound Tribe Sector Nine, New Deal and Particle. This past month I was able to experience some jamtronica in the plant filled atrium of the Catalyst with the electronic hydro funk band called Sunsquabi. I first saw this Colorado trio at High Sierra Music Festival last summer. Even the band name has a stoner mountain vibe to it. I would describe Sunsquabi as a trippy blend of jazz, funk, cosmic disco, classic rock, and hiphop fused together with Wed. • Jan. 4 • 7:30pm looping technology, live • $17adv/$20dr Muriel Anderson w/ improvisation, and a willWonderlust Visual Show + Steve Palazzo & Charlie Rice ingness to take chances. Sen. Warren: Pull Pot Shops Out of Banking Limbo

C

by Steve LeBlanc, Associated Press annabis Boston—As marijuana shops sprout in states that have legalized the drug, they face a critical stumbling block—lack of access to the kind of routine banking services other businesses take for granted. U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a Massachusetts Democrat, is leading an effort to make sure vendors working with legal marijuana businesses, from chemists who test marijuana for harmful substances to firms that provide security, don’t have their banking services taken away. It’s part of a wider effort by Warren and others to bring the burgeoning $7 billion marijuana industry in from a fiscal limbo she said forces many shops to rely solely on cash, making them tempting targets for criminals. After voters in Warren’s home state approved a November ballot question to legalize the recreational use of pot, she joined nine other senators in sending a letter to a key federal regulator, the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, calling on it to issue additional guidance to help banks provide services to marijuana shop vendors. Twenty-eight states have legalized marijuana for medicinal or recreational use. Warren, a member of the Senate Banking Committee, said there are benefits to letting marijuana-based businesses move away from a cashonly model. “You make sure that people are really paying their taxes. You know that the money is not being diverted to some kind of criminal enterprise,” Warren said recently. “And it’s just a plain old safety issue. You don’t want people walking in with guns and masks and saying, ‘Give me all your cash.’” A spokesman for the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network said the agency is reviewing the letter. There has been some movement to accommodate the banking needs of marijuana businesses. Two years ago, the U.S. Department of the Treasury gave banks permission to do business with legal marijuana entities under some conditions. Since then, the number of banks and credit unions willing to handle pot money rose from 51 in 2014 to 301 in 2016. Warren, however, said fewer than 3 percent of the nation’s 11,954 federally regulated banks and credit unions are

serving the cannabis industry. Taylor West, deputy director of the National Cannabis Industry Association, a trade organization for 1,100 marijuana businesses nationwide, said access to banking remains a top concern. “What the industry needs is a sustainable solution that services the entire industry instead of tinkering around the edges,” Taylor said. “You don’t have to be fully in favor of legalized marijuana to know that it helps no one to force these businesses outside the banking system.” Sam Kamin, a professor at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law who studies marijuana regulation, said there’s only so much states can do on their own. “The stumbling block over and over again is the federal illegality,” he said. The federal government lumps marijuana into the same class of drugs as heroin, LSD and peyote. Democratic President Barack Obama’s administration has essentially turned a blind eye to state laws legalizing the drug, and supporters of legalizing marijuana hope Republican President-elect Donald Trump will follow suit. Trump officials did not respond to a request for comment. During the presidential campaign, Trump said states should be allowed to legalize marijuana and has expressed support for medicinal use. But he also has sounded more skeptical about recreational use, and his pick for attorney general, Alabama U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions, is a stern critic. Some people in the marijuana industry say the banking challenges are merely growing pains for an industry evolving from mom-and-pop outlets. Nicholas Vita, CEO of Columbia Care, one of the nation’s largest providers of medical marijuana products, said it’s up to marijuana businesses to make sure their financial house is in order. “It’s not just as simple as asking the banks to open their doors,” Vita said. “The industry also needs to develop a set of standards that are acceptable to the banks.” Newshawk: The GCW Source: Associated Press (Wire) Author: Steve LeBlanc, Associated Press, Published: January 1, 2017 Copyright: 2017 The Associated Press CannabisNews—Cannabis Archives http://cannabisnews.com/news/ list/cannabis.shtml Printed with permission.

The High Of 2016: Marijuana Legalization Quietly Goes Global

I

by Alice Salles n America, the cannabis legalization movement has been in full swing, with states like California, Massachusetts, Maine, and Nevada joining Washington and Colorado by legalizing recreational weed in 2016. Other states like Florida, Arkansas, Montana, and North Dakota also followed suit, legalizing marijuana for medical use. Prior to the 2016 election, 25 states had already passed medical marijuana laws, but in 2017, experts have estimated that states like Arizona, Vermont, Rhode Island, Hawaii, Texas, and Tennessee will join the movement, either by legalizing or decriminalizing cannabis. But as the U.S. legalization trend continues and anti-drug war advocates are reminded to stay strong, we’re also reminded that the pro-pot movement was not launched in the United States. It has been spreading globally, as far back as 1976, with countries like the Netherlands and Portugal experimenting with decriminalization and teaching the world a lesson on the importance of respecting personal choices. In 2016, Uruguay and Canada legalized and regulated weed, helping to remove the stigma around the use of the plant. But Ireland, Australia, Germany, and Jamaica weren’t far behind, approving laws that recognize medical marijuana. Before them, Colombian president Juan Manuel Santos had signed a decree “making the cultivation, consumption, import and export of medical marijuana legal,” while in Chile, the private and personal use of cannabis has been decriminalized since 2005. By 2016, the Chilean congress had approved a bill allowing locals to grow small amounts for medical, recreational, or spiritual use. On the African continent, countries like South Africa are also inching closer to legalization, with court cases that could legalize weed sales still pending. In countries like Egypt, Gabon, Rwanda, Tanzania, Zambia, Ghana, Botswana, Morocco, and Ethiopia, selling and using pot may still be illegal, but enforcement is usually lax, and groups have been lobbying their governments to put an end to anti-cannabis rules. Marijuana Decriminalization is Worth Exploring In Portugal, the possession of all drugs was decriminalized in 2001. This move helped to ensure drug dealers and users do not get sucked into the legal black hole that is so familiar to drug users and sellers in America. But for anti-drug war advocates who are concerned about the social cost of the war on drugs, the quest for justice has been leading entire nations toward legalization — an action that is commonly followed by regulation.

GLOBAL LIFE SCIENCES

• The only patented, water soluble, full spectrum

And while legalization helps to protect users, regulation often helps to insulate certain growers and sellers with access to the market, keeping competitors at bay. By imposing taxes and rules, governments set barriers to entry, giving growers and sellers without access to capital even more incentive to stay in the black market. As Mises Institute’s Ryan McMaken explained in his “Government Regulators Drive Legal Marijuana Underground” piece, “businesses have moved underground to use socalled gray markets” since U.S. states began legalizing weed. In this case, the problem has to do with the federal ban on marijuana, which still stands despite popular pressure. Since weed businesses in states where cannabis is legal do not have access to financial institutions because of federal laws, they have fewer options when it comes to looking for funds to open their businesses. They also have a hard time opening business banking accounts since their money is coming from the commerce of weed. Further, they are barred from taking tax deductions and benefiting from tax credits, meaning they endure the costs of doing business but receive no breaks as other businesses do. “That means a marijuana business owner can pay an effective tax rate as high as 70 percent, as opposed to the more typical 30 percent rate,” the Daily Beast has reported. If no laws prohibiting or regulating the sale or use of cannabis are in place, regulation cannot stand in the way of private institutions like smaller banks or credit unions and individuals hoping to start their own businesses. By decriminalizing weed, individuals gain by having access to more choices. And when it comes to weed consumption (or any other product for that matter), choice is what guarantees product quality and customer satisfaction. Hopefully, this global legalization trend will continue, bringing the focus back to decriminalization and peace.
