Paralympics under the spotlight

Valentina Gimenez: welcome listeners to the Paralympics under the spotlight show. This is the BBC 103.1, the sports radio. I am Valentina and I am here with my fellow Lucas {Lucas: good afternoon listeners} we have two very controversial topics today. They are: what do you think about Mac Donald s being the Olympics sponsor? And: are the Paralympics taken as seriously as the Olympic Games?

Lucas piedi: call us at 204210 or mail us at paralympics@yahoo.com to give us your opinion about the topics of the day. Now we are going to listen to our meteorologist Steve. Ok Steve how s the weather today?

Song of meteorologist

Ignacio Alfo: Today Wednesday 27 of July the sky will be overcast and in the north of England we are going to have some drizzle. In the south we are going to have thunderstorms for example in Southampton, Cardiff, London, Birmingham and others. The temperature of these cities will not rise from 23ยบC and will not decrease form18ยบC. The cities of north Liverpool, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Stornoway and others will not rise from 14ยบC and will not be lower than from 12ยบC. Now back to you Lucas.

Sound of Gatorade Azul Bak & Rosario Meilan: GATORADE A: "Mango, berry, kiwi and passion fruit. with vitamin c and 96%of water for your higher fortress and energy." R: "There is no way to keep playing without proper hydration." A: Life is a sport" R:"drink it up" BOTH:"GATORADE!!"

Lucas Piedi: Fine we are back at the Paralympics under the spotlight show! Here at my side sits our marvelous journalist Elena. She s going to deliver the latest news about the games that will be held here in London in just a month. So, Elena, please...

Elena luque: Hi my name is Elena, let s plunge into the pool now. David Roberts a British swimmer did not make the original team because of illness and injuries that had affected his form. But now he can ask the British swimming to reconsider their decision. He will not give up. But some athletes prefer to ride bicycles so for your information the cyclist test is going to be in Hannah Radcliff; more than 150 cyclists from 27 nations tested the motor racing track, which will be used in the Paralympics event in Kent. The Swanley venue will host 32 Paralympics road cycling races and trials between 5 and 8 September. Mr. Maclean said: "when you see motor racing on telly you ve no idea how big or small theses hills are. It s a bit different when you are doing 25 miles an hour on a bike

Valentina: For you to remember the topics of the day are: what do you think about Mac Donald s being the sponsor of the games? And

Lucas Piedi: are the Paralympics taken as seriously as the Olympic Games? valentina: don t forget to call us at 204210 or mail us at paralympics@yahoo.com to give us your opinion about the topics

Sound (ring) valentina: we have a caller! Hello? Lucas gp: Hello, my name is Brian and I'm from Whitby. My opinion about the first topic of the day is that any company that can pay so much money to be the main sponsor of the Paralympics is giving useful money to improve all the aspects of the Paralympics and as regards of the second topic i think that the Paralympics are not taking as seriously as the Olympic games because people cant appreciate the Paralympics athletes effort to be there and also people prefer to watch the Olympics more than the Paralympics. Thank you, I hear you every day. Brian

Sound (ring)

lucas piedi: hi there! Who am I talking to?

Luchi lovo: Hello my name is Peter from Hillingham . I felt curiosity for your topic of the day so I would like to share my opinion regarding both of them, as a starter I believe the Donald s shouldn't be one of the main sponsors since you will not find an athlete eating one of its burgers plus those burgers are one of the main causes of overweight and usually overweight is related to people who don't do sports even though i recon that mc Donald s has some merit to be there because of all the money it donated and that they hire people that most companies don't. Regarding your second topic there s not much I can comment since I don't really observe the Paralympics even though there is much equality because many of the stadiums which will be used in the Olympics are used here. I really enjoy listening to your radio show every day.

Valentina Gimenez: Let s listen to Alexia and Guillermo comment on more news about the games

1) Alexia Berto: I am Alexia and this is the latest news on the Paralympic games, AFTER months of training, Damian Lopez Alfonso, the Cuban bicycle racer who lost both arms in a childhood accident, would be going to London to compete in the 2012 Paralympic Games. It was the culmination of years of struggle for the 35-year-old racer, the subject of a June 12, 2011 Metropolitan cover story.

2) Guillermo: With only the tips of his elbows touching his bicycle's upturned handlebars, Damian Lopez Alfonso pedaled along the Hudson River bike path on a cool March day. His balancing act elicited stares from disbelieving pedestrians and curious double-takes from fellow cyclist. Because not only does Mr.Alfonso ride his bike without forearms, lost in a devastating childhood accident, but he also rides it very, very fast.

3) AND OUR SECOND celebrity of the day is Jarryd Wallace, a champion runner in high school, lost his right leg but not his determination to compete. He is now a contender to participate in the 2012 London Paralympics.

4) ANOTHER AMAZING ATHLETE is The English archer Danielle Brown who has shot thousands of arrows in her career. But when the 22-year-old drew her compound bow and let one arrow fly here on Monday at the Commonwealth

Games, she made history, becoming the first handicapped athlete to compete for England in an event for able-bodied athletes in the history of the Games.

Sound of running Azul ADIDAS

R: "In sports as in life nothing is impossible." A: "When an athlete intends to break a record there is nothing that can stop him if he has the conviction he will succeed" R: "The new line of sports wear specially prepared for the Paralympic games: It is comfortable, light and soft" B: "IMPOSSIBLE IS NOTHING!"

Song Academy awards

Lucas Piedi: ok, we are having two guests today. Let us have the first one! He is a Paralympic athlete, he has beaten many world records, lets welcome Oscar Pistorius!

Federico Arienti: Oh hello there, thanks for inviting me. Lucas piedi: You are welcome. So, Oscar, what discipline do you practice? Fede: Oh well, my everyday practice is running but I specialize in 100, 200 and 400 meter races.

Valen: Great. How did you get to be a world known athlete? Fede: I wouldn t call myself a world known athlete, but I ve become known through the many consecutive Paralympics I ve been part of, and, most importantly, I ve beaten three world records. Before you ask, I had both legs amputated when I was a kid so I run with some special equipment. I use a sort of artificial mechanical legs.

Valen: Wow! Three world records! And are you going to participate in the Games this year?

Fede: No, sadly. I didn t qualify. I am already a bit old to compete against these new guys. Moreover, I am having some other problems. Controversy about my special equipment has been growing lately. It is said that it affected my way of running, and that could ruin the long career that I have built all these years!

Lucas P: That s a shame. Well, thank you for our time Oscar, we really appreciate it. Fede: No, thank you! Bye!

Valen: Our second guest is a one-legged jumper. He is also world recognized and his name is Arnold Boldt. Hello Arnold, how are you feeling today?

Francisco T: Hello, I m fine, thank you, and really glad to be here. Lucas P: Tell us about your career.

Fran: Ok. I lost my leg when I was 3, but that didn t stop me from competing. My training was very tough compared to a normal athlete s one, but everyone trainers, fellows, etc.- was kind to me and helped me a lot. I debuted in the Paralympics in 1976 and I won two gold medals, in high jump and long jump. These were also world records for a one-legged jumper at the time. Now, my personal bests are 2.o8 meters in high jump and 3.01 in long jump.

Valen: Oh my gosh! Three meters with one leg? Wow! So, are you still competing?

Fran: Yes, well my goal is to participate in the Paralympics this year. Actually, I have been competing in a series of small events to warm up for the Games!

Valen: Good luck with that Arnold! That was Arnold Boldt. Thank you very much. Fran: You are welcome! I had a really good time. Lucas Piedi: Perfect. My partner Carl will announce the forecast. Lucas Caldara:

Hi I am Carl and I will talk you about the weather in London this week. This week would we mostly sunny the days Thursday, Friday and Saturday of June with a maximum temperature of 22 C and a lower temperature of 13 C. But in Sunday it would be mostly clear with a chance of showers, and it s also going to be a very cold day with a temperature of 9 C. In Monday the sky would be clear until the afternoon because it s going to have cloudy periods with a chance of showers and with a slight chance of a thunderstorm.

Lucas: Fine, that s all! I am sorry to tell you that our show has come to an end. Valen: Hope you liked it! This was the Paralympics under the spotlight show at the BBC 103.1, the sports radio. Thank you all listeners and hope we meet again next time. Bye!
