Nena

When Nena came into our lives, she was like a breath of fresh air and her eyes were like looking into the bright blue sky’s! Nena loved car rides, and frisbee and being on our boat. She was the best companion a family could ever ask for. As the years went by our Nena started having health issues, but she never complained and stayed happy. At the end we had no choice but to lay Nena to rest, she walked into the vet like it was a normal visit…… It was the most difficult time of our life to put down our best friend and loyal friend, but Nena went down peacefully…those sky blue eyes looking at us to the end… Nena, you will always be here in our hearts and never forgotten… our baby girl Nena!

IS MY DOG DEVELOPING CATARACTS?

Photo Credit: Matt Branscombe, BSC Photo Studio

When to suspect cataract and what you can do for your pet. What Is Cataract? Cataract is the word for any opacity that develops within the normally clear lens inside each eye. Specifically, cataract blocks light from reaching the retina in the back of the eye. Early stages of cataract have little to no effect on a dog’s vision, whereas mid-to-late stages of cataract cause varying degrees of vision impairment with manifestations ranging from missing a ball to bumping into objects. Cataracts are not the only source of ocular cloudiness. All aging dogs develop nuclear sclerosis, or increased density of the lens. Nuclear sclerosis results in a cloudy appearance to the eyes but does not typically interfere with vision. Your veterinarian can help you distinguish between nuclear sclerosis and cataract, though you can perform an initial test at home first. Shine a light toward your dog in dim lighting; if you see a round, bright, green or yellow glow from the back of your dog’s eyes, he or she is unlikely to have advanced cataract. Importantly, the reverse is not necessarily true; the absence of this glow does not mean your pet has cataracts, as some dogs lack the glow due to normal variations in development. Why Does Cataract Develop? The most common causes of cataracts in dogs include: • Genetic cataracts. These tend to develop in young to middle-aged dogs, occur in both mixed-breed and purebred dogs, and progress at variable rates. • Senile cataracts. These typically develop after 8-10 years of age, occur in any breed, and can progress slowly to the point of causing complete vision loss. • Cataracts secondary to diabetes mellitus. Approximately 80% of canine patients with diabetes mellitus will develop cataract within the first 18 months of their diabetes diagnosis, and these cataracts tend to be the most rapidly progressive. Why Is It Important to Diagnose Cataract in Dogs? Cataract not only leads to vision loss but can also cause significant inflammation inside of the eye. Cataract-induced inflammation then puts the 6 • Winter 2021 | Connecticut Dog

Nuclear Sclerosis

dog at risk for discomfort, glaucoma, and retinal detachment. Patients with diabetes mellitusinduced cataract are particularly likely to develop intraocular inflammation if treatment is not initiated promptly. Fortunately, medical and surgical treatment reduce the risk of complications. What Are Treatment Options for Cataract in Dogs? There are two primary goals for canine patients who develop cataract: (1) to prevent discomfort and (2) to restore vision. Eye drops are prescribed to most canine patients with mid-to-late-stage cataract to suppress inflammation and maintain comfort. Unfortunately, there are no commercially available medical treatments that have been proven to prevent or delay cataract progression in dogs. Surgical cataract removal remains the gold standard treatment, with an approx. 90% success rate. The vast majority of dogs are discharged from hospital the day after surgery and have restored vision, without discomfort. This makes cataract surgery one of the most rewarding procedures performed by veterinary ophthalmologists. Early intervention is recommended because studies have demonstrated increased risk of complications with later-stage cataract. In short, the earlier these dogs are seen by a veterinarian and the earlier treatment is instituted, the better. It is especially important for diabetic pets developing cataract to be seen promptly by a veterinary ophthalmologist, as intraocular inflammation can result in complications within a matter of weeks in certain individuals. For those patients who are not candidates for cataract surgery, long term use of topical non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drops may be recommended to maintain comfort.

Winston The 2021 Connecticut Dog

Cover Contest Winner,

What breed is Winston? Winton is a pure bred pug. As you can see in his photo, he’s the classic fawn color with an adorable black squishy face (now with some distinguished grey hairs mixing in). He is a perfect 24 pounds of snuggly, sheddy sweetness.

What are some nicknames that you have for Winston? Ha ha... Winston has all sorts of nicknames. First off, his full name is Winston Puddles (I have given all of my dogs the Puddles middle name as a way of keeping them related), but sometimes I call him Winny or Weirdo (well, only because he does some really funny and weird things). And then on occasion there are a bunch of other random nicknames that come out… like Bud and Bub, oh, and Churchill (my friend Brian gave him that one).

Does Winston have any pet siblings? Winston does have a pet sibling. Up until earlier this year and for the entire time he has been part of my family, he had a big brother named Otto who was a rescue since birth from the Connecticut Humane Society. Shortly after Otto went Over the Rainbow Bridge at the end of May, he has welcomed a new baby brother Osmond. Ozzy is an 8-month-old Frenchton – half Boston terrier from his mom’s side and half French bulldog from his dad’s side.

What is Winston’s best quality?

Congratulations Winston! Connecticut Dog asked Winston’s human mom a few questions and here’s what she had to say: How did Winston become a part of your family? Winston became part of my family the day after Christmas in 2014. A few months prior to him finding me, my very first pug I had ever had, Opie, went over the Rainbow Bridge. He was thirteen and though I knew I could never replace him, I desperately missed the squishyfaced, curly-tailed bundle of cuteness that a pug is. So, I started casually looking around at rescues to adopt. I was actually very surprised as I started talking to rescues how hard it was to find a one that would adopt to someone who lived in apartment. Several told me I just didn’t have the right living conditions even though I had an over-abundance of love. Then, one day, I came across a listing on, believe it or not, Craigslist, from someone who needed 8 • Winter 2021 | Connecticut Dog

to rehome their 6-month-old pug puppy because their landlord discovered they had him when they shouldn’t. I don’t even know why I was on Craigslist because I don’t use the site. Perhaps it was fate, or destiny, or maybe something more. But I inquired immediately to see if he was still available, went to visit Pudgie (that was his name at the time), and I ended up bringing him home that day. At that time I had another dog Otto, and Winston immediately seemed to fit right into our little family.

How old is Winston? Winston is 7-years young. When he became part of my family, I wasn’t 100 percent sure of his age, but my veterinarian figured that he was about 6-months old. So, every year I celebrate his Gotcha Day on December 26th, and his invented birthday on June 26th, six months prior.

Winston is so incredibly friendly and affectionate. He LOVES people, and of course me, his mom, so much. I don’t think that there is anything he likes to do more than walk around our neighborhood and make sure that every person he sees pets him. And if he encounters someone who hasn’t said hello, or who he hasn’t been able to greet, he is sure to be vocal about it – and stare at them - until they come over for a quick visit. Then, at the end of each day, Winston makes sure that I know that he loves me. We close out every evening with him falling asleep ON me while watching television, and we head to bed where he cuddles up next to my legs, under the blankets, for the night. He is my best friend.

What is Winston’s favorite food or snack? Ha ha. I want to laugh at this question only because anyone who has ever had a pug will agree with me when I say ‘what isn’t Winston’s favorite food or snack’. He is obsessed with everything he can eat! If I had a pick a few of his extra favorite snacks I would definitely have to say that he loves blueberries and broccoli (his love of broccoli is one of the reasons he has the Weirdo nickname).

And Winston is also a big fan of Trader Joe’s peanut butter cookies. When I give him one, he will take it and hide away in his crate to savor it in private, away from his brother.

What tricks can Winston do? Winston knows how to give me his paw, how to sit, and how to do down and down-stay. But he is so funny that he only seems to remember these when I have a treat in my hand. I think that this is so smart because not only does he know how to do these tricks, he also knows that there’s no point in doing them if there isn’t a reward for him.

What is Winston’s favorite toy or game? Winston doesn’t actually play with toys or games really, he is all about the love, and the food. If I had to pick one thing that he likes to play around with, if he’s feeling a bit frisky, I would say it would be his blanket. Well, any blanket really. He loves to grab ahold of a corner and chew on it or play tug with it. I have one specific blanket, it’s plaid, and if you hold it up to the light it must have a hundred Winston holes in it. That’s okay, I wash it and we snuggle with it on weekend.

Where is Winston’s favorite place to go? Winston has two places he loves to visit. One is not so surprising, and one probably is surprising until you know why. First, we live really close to the water and to the best little ice cream shop in Milford. They have Pup Sundaes which are basically sugar free vanilla ice cream with a tiny dog treat on top and every time we walk past, Winston will pull me to their window to try to get me to order one. Not to mention that their super sweet owner, and the other employees, are usually outside on nice summer days and Winston will stop by to visit them and even stare at the door waiting for them to come out to visit him. The not so surprising place he loves to visit is our veterinarian. The doctors and staff are so kind, and fun, I think Winston thinks that every time he goes there, he is going on special vacation. He gets so much love from the second he arrives and if allowed he struts around like he owns the place. And, when we drive by and Winston is in the car, he will literally start running around the back seat of my car (and yes, he is securely strapped in) and screaming hoping that we are stopping in for a visit.

What is the funniest thing Winston has ever done? Winston makes me laugh every day, to be honest. But the first thing that comes to mind is when he hides behind our curtains. I am not

sure if he thinks he is invisible, or if he is trying to get attention, or if he’s playing hide-and-seek with his brother, but when he uses his nose to hide behind the floor-length SHEER curtains, I can’t help but laugh. He just stands there, with his back to the window, the curtains laying softly on his face, totally in sight because I can see right through, and with his little paws sticking out the bottom.

What is Winston’s favorite thing to do with family? Just being with his family is what is Winston’s favorite thing. He doesn’t like to be left out of anything. So, if I go out and can take him, I do. And if I am in the apartment, I make sure that there is a comfy spot right next to be that he can lay in so that he is always close. That’s what family AND best friends do.

What is your most treasured memory of Winston? Oh gosh, this question makes me sad, I have made a million of them already, and am planning on making a million more of them so I don’t want to pick just one. They are all treasured. Every single second I spend with him is treasured.

Tell us something about Winston that not too many people know. When Winston was one or two, I can’t remember which, I set up a Twitter account in his name so that I could get pet advice from a very active community on social media, and of course, to also look at adorable pet pictures. What I didn’t realize is that from setting up his account he would become part of an online community that would also become a global friendship. He, well I, have met and made many, many amazing friends from so many countries – the UK, Canada, Ireland, Scotland. And, from these friendships came a surprising and wonderful inclusion of Winston as a character in a book series titled “Tzu Kingdom”.

o many of our local rescue organizations and animal shelters are overwhelmed with homeless dogs that need to find their forever families. This great need is, in many ways, due to the large number of returned pets from animal adoptions that took place at the start of covid-19. People are moving, going back to work, taking vacations, losing their jobs, suffering from either financial and/or medical hardships along with a variety of other reasons causing the uptick in returned dogs to shelters across our state. The combination of the many new dogs routinely coming into the shelters, along with the overwhelming animal surrenders, our local animal shelters and rescue organizations depend greatly on the generosity, love and support from volunteers, donators, and adopters. To bring awareness about this matter to our pet communities, this issue contains information about some of these animal shelters and rescue organizations. With thanks to the support of dog loving local business owners, Connecticut Dog has put together this editorial feature that will continue to be included in each issue of the magazine going forward where these and additional animal welfare facilities will be featured. As you turn through the following pages, please be mindful of the animal shelters and rescue organizations located within your own community and think about ways that you can help make a difference in the lives of abandoned, abused, neglected and homeless animals.

A Heartfelt Adoption Story Photographs and Article by Tony Ferraiolo

I was searching for a dog to rescue and had a particular dog in mind. Ideally the dog would be a scruffy mix, multicolored with a patch of color over one eye, about 50 lbs. full grown, great with people, children, and other dogs. I manifested it for months. At the end of August of this year I went on Petfinder and there he was a rescue from Louisiana, found under a bridge with five other pups. I put in an application and it was accepted and by September 13, he was in my home. Meet Nami, a 10-month-old, terrier mix. The sweetest dog you will ever meet. Unfortunately, two types of lung parasites came with him from Louisiana, and it caused him to be hospitalized for a while. He is a special guy for sure. Everywhere he goes no matter who meets him, their hearts melt with every wag of his tail. The hospital staff shared that when he woke up from his procedures, he always woke up wagging his tail and offering a paw!

Connecticut Humane Society

CThumane.org 800-452-0114 Whether it’s providing resources so pets can keep their homes, or being a safe haven for critters with nowhere to turn, the Connecticut Humane Society (CHS) serves vulnerable pets across the state. Founded in 1881, CHS is the oldest and most comprehensive animal welfare organization in Connecticut. CHS has long focused on homeless pets, veterinary care and adoptions, but also has programs making it possible for pets to keep their families: the Pet Food Pantry, reduced-fee Fox Memorial Clinic, traveling wellness clinics, behavior assistance, and crisis foster homes. CHS is the leading resource in the state for companion animal welfare, enriching the lives of families and communities through adoption services, medical care, education, and prevention of cruelty. As an independent nonprofit located in Newington, Waterford and Westport, CHS receives no ongoing municipal funding and isn’t associated with national animal welfare groups. The pets rely on the generosity and support of donors. Sponsored by: The Bark Easy Grooming Salon

Double Dog Rescue

Double Dog Rescue ddr@doubledogrescue.org www.doubledogrescue.org Double Dog Rescue’s mission is to rescue unwanted dogs of all breeds and ages, secure them veterinary care and place them into the right loving, forever homes. Double Dog Rescue works to always do the right thing for abandoned and unwanted dogs and once we start a relationship with a dog, we are committed to provide whatever is necessary to ensure the dog is healthy and safe. Double Dog works with southern kill shelters as well as local Connecticut shelters to find dogs in need. This takes a large team and network to coordinate and keep going. Our rescue family has been working towards this mission for over 10 years and continues to learn with each dog. Sponsored by: Dom’s Coffee

Directions for Horses & Pets: Apply a heaping teaspoon on a stiff brush and brush against the lay of the hair, getting TNT down to the skin. Start above the hoof/foot and work all around the leg toward the knee. Additional amounts can be applied up the leg, under the belly, or anywhere else crawling pests have been seen. When applying to the ears or near the eyes, rub TNT into your hands and apply as you would a dry shampoo to avoid getting the powder into the eyes. If the animal stays dry and does not groom the powder off, one application should be effective for up to two weeks. For hard to reach areas we suggest you use the Scratch Me Silly multipurpose application tool, found on our website. This applicator will allow you to get TNT-Tick Natural Terminator in sensitive areas easily and safely.

Our goal is to rehabilitate and rehome animals that enter our shelter. Perfect Imperfections, a special needs rescue in Watertown, CT, was contacted to help. They took him in, without knowing the extent of his injuries, only knowing he needed help. Dante had several surgeries, intense physical therapy, and lots of love and devotion to help him heal. He now runs and plays like any other dog, thanks to his rescue and their efforts. We are 100% volunteer-staffed and we rely on fosters to keep our dogs safe while we find them suitable forever homes, as we do not have a shelter or kennel facility. We do adoptions at monthly events and by appointment. We are 100% reliant on donations and fundraising to cover veterinary care and supplies.

Valley Shore Animal Welfare League (also known as ‘VSAWL’) was founded in 1972 by a group of women that saw an increasing need for animal-oriented programs along the shoreline of Connecticut. The League now owns and operates a no-kill shelter that serves as an adoption facility for dogs and cats. Our goal is to provide care and compassion while working to find animals their forever homes. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization operated by a Board of Directors. A caring, dedicated staff and number of volunteers handle the daily operations of the shelter. WASA (Westport Animal Shelter Advocates) formed in 2007 to assist and advocate for homeless dogs in Connecticut. We fund the veterinary care for all dogs impounded at Westport Animal Control from routine exams and vaccinations to spays/neuters to life-saving surgeries. WASA is the official volunteer group for Westport Animal Control (WAC) and volunteers are on site every day to exercise and socialize the “guests” at Westport Animal Control as well as conduct meet and greets and home visits required for every adoption of a dog from WAC. Additionally, since our formation, we have developed a fostering network for dogs that come to WASA as owner surrenders from Connecticut pet owners or as rescue’s from Connecticut’s municipal shelters. With many organizations focusing on dogs being transported into Connecticut, WASA is dedicated to Connecticut dogs who so often are overlooked when an individual or family is looking to adopt a dog.

BR EED If you are looking for a hiking partner, or someone to help protect your home, a pug is probably not the breed for you. While like every dog they do need exercise, their short noses make them intolerant of extreme temperatures. Walking, not running is more their speed. They may make you aware of an intruder, but will probably make friends before you can dial 911, especially if there are treats involved. Pugs are chock full of personality and each one possesses their own little quirks. Life with a pug will almost always guarantee that you will be laughing on a daily basis. They are known to be stubborn and training can be challenging. They are very food motivated, but maintaining a healthy weight is critically important for their good health and longevity. Pugs thrive on companionship. They love nothing more than being with their people and they often enjoy the company of other pugs. Most pug owners end up with more than one. They shed. All year round. You will need lint brushes at the door and a good vacuum cleaner. They also require maintenance for their facial folds. Keeping those cute folds clean will help prevent skin infections. Once they know a nice healthy treat is in their future, they will typically cooperate with getting groomed, Many seem to enjoy the pampering. Pugs have their fair share of common health issues and you should be prepared to help address some of them over the course of their lives. Their protruding eyes, without the protection of a snout, leave them more prone to injury as well as the disease pigmenting keratosis. At some point, most pug owners can expect to be administering eye drops every day for the life of their pug. They will always need climate control, and can have other breathing issues. Their short noses and narrow airways mean many will snore. A lot of pug owners say they cannot fall asleep without the sound of their snoring pug! Some pugs can also develop mobility issues as a result

Lola

of a disease called Myelopathy. This can result in them needing treatments like physical therapy and they can end up needing wheelchairs. Life with a pug can be the most joyful experience in the world. If you have had a dog, that does not necessarily mean you can handle all that comes with owning a pug. They are most certainly a breed of their own.

Pug Rescue of New England Pug Rescue of New England was founded by breeders Doris Aldrich and Fran Stewart in the late 1970’s and was later incorporated as a registered non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. We are affiliated with the Patriot Pug Dog Club and recognized by Pug Dog Club of America. Wr are a 100% volunteer foster home based rescue organization. Our Mission Is Simple We find homes for abandoned and surrendered pugs in the six New England states. Our pugs are up-to-date on shots and spayed or neutered prior to being placed in a forever home. PRoNE is supported by adoption fees, donations, and funds raised through our special events like the Annual Pug Social, auctions, and calendar contests. PRoNE is run by a dedicated board of five women who love pugs.

Lola is an adorable 2 1/2 years old chug. She is full of personality, so loving and cuddly once she is comfortable with you. Lola is extremely nervous and reactive. Lola was adopted out of a shelter at a young age. She loved her former owner, but she had to move into assisted living and there were many strangers around. Lola was very afraid, and she nipped at a stranger and the administration of the housing said she had to leave. Her new family must be willing to follow through with her consistent training. We feel a home that is quiet with only older children or no children would be best for her. She is somewhat dog selective but could live with another pet if properly introduced and socialized. She has a long life ahead of her and we will make sure she is placed in the right environment for her to thrive.

Casco is sweet 13 year old puggle, with all the typical old pug issues, blind, deaf, lyme positive, arthritic, and senile. His owner passed and a relative took him in, her young dogs bullied sweet Casco. He did not deserve to live out the rest of his years in that manner. He is now in a loving foster home with lots of experience caring for senior dogs. He lives with a few older dogs that understand him and we are letting Casco decompress and get his naps undisturbed for now. He is loved and happy. Whether Casco will be in our hospice care program is not yet determined, but we do know that he will get the best senior years possible
