Fall into Education o matter how old are you are Education Is Key! No day is like the last, every day I wake knowing that I will learn something that I didn’t know the previous day and being armed with that information is a powerful thing. The premise of this magazine is to arm you with information. That’s why I decided that this issue would focus more on education although we will still talk about sports, arts and festivals. Those things make fall what it is, but education is very much a part of it. We wanted to provide some help to parents for their children, so we decided to discuss where you can get the help you need to assist with your kid’s growth. Fall also begins the new theatre season so in addition to telling you about the wonderful upcoming shows such as the Women of Brewster’s Place and Curvy Widow with Sybil Shepherd, we invite you to learn about the craft through classes offered at venues such as the Alliance and Rialto Theatre. For those of you looking to maximize your business potential, be sure to take a look at the useful information in that section. That’s right we cover the entire gamut! Now once you are ready to play hard and take a break from the hard work, make sure to glance at the calendar because there are a lot of events, festivals and concerts going on this quarter. Instead of doing a recipe in this issue, I decided to spotlight the newly renovated Marriott Marquis Hotel. You have got to check it out! Fall brings about beauty, togetherness and family, the leaves are changing, the weather is cooling off and we typically spend more time with our family and friends. So enjoy the fall season with your friends and family at a live show, one of our sports bar picks or shopping for the holidays. If you are just not sure, let us connect you!

he summer break is over and you’ve sent your children back to school. But we all know that the job if educating our kids is a shared responsibility. The better they do in school, the better chance they have of getting scholarship money for college. Here are some ideas for parents, grandparents and mentors, to help your special student excel when the school bell rings. Research shows that parents and family members must be active partners in the learning process. You should always remember that you are part of the team that is educating your child, and your children will do better in class when they see that you in touch with their teachers. The Atlanta Public School District offers this Parent Tip Sheet that gives you some basic questions that you can ask your child’s teachers.

Questions For Parents To Ask Your Child’s Teacher: 1. Can I see a list of what you expect the class to learn by the end of the year? 2. What can I work on right now at home to help my child stay ahead in class? 3. How does my child act at school? 4. What motivates my child and makes learning easier? 5. What doesn’t seem to work? 6. What books would be good for my child? 7. What tutoring or enrichment opportunities might be good for my child? 8. What’s the best way to contact you?

One of the biggest challenges for any parent is to get their child to talk about what’s going on in school. How many times have you asked your child about his/her day at school and heard, “Fine” or “All right?” But the start of a new school year is the perfect time to change your approach. Try one of these conversation starters: Lastly, don’t be afraid to help your child with their homework. Parents, who get involved with the books, can actually see what happening in class. Sometimes your child may be in classes that you haven’t taken yourself. But that’s when it’s most important for you to talk with the teachers about how you can help.

Page 9

Questions For Parents To Ask Your Child: 1. Tell me about the best part of your day. 2. What was the most challenging thing you had to do today? 3. Who is your favorite teacher and what did you do in their class today? 4. What two things did you learn today that you did not know yesterday? 5. Tell me about your most challenging class or assignment? 6. What's the biggest difference between this year and last year? 7. What did you learn today that you would like to know more about?

If your child attends The Atlanta Public School District, homework help is a close as your own phone. Atlanta Public Schools students can call the APS Homework Hotline for free assistance. No matter the grade or subject level, teachers are on hand to give one-on-one assistance and easy to understand explanations. APS Homework Hotline 678-553-3029 Hours: Mon. – Thurs. 4 – 9 p.m. (Except during holidays and semester breaks)

The bottom line: There is plenty of help available for parents who want to make a difference and help their child have a successful school year!

NUTRITION

Healthy Food Makes The Grade BY JANET YOUNG

s your children head back to school it’s time for you to do a little healthy homework to help them make the grade. Proper nutrition can help improve academic and athletic performance, reduce illnesses and help fight childhood obesity. You can help your child have a healthier school year and future by following these guidelines:

A

• Don’t let them skip meals— ESPECIALLY BREAKFAST, and don’t just rely on the breakfast and lunch served at school. Make a quick, healthy breakfast, like 100% whole grain cereal or single serve yogurt. • Serve more fresh/raw fruits & vegetables; substitute these for high calorie, less nutritious snacks • Choose 100% whole grains (bread, cereal, pasta); which are higher in fiber. • Select lean red meat, fish, poultry, eggs and dairy – free range, wild or cage free are the best and can be found at your local grocery • Include nuts, beans and legumes – they provide additional protein, fiber and the healthy fats needed for better concentration, behavior, cardiovascular health.

• Read food labels – the first five ingredients tell the story. If an ingredient is listed at the beginning of the label, the product contains a lot of it. Avoid products with the following five ingredients listed first: High fructose corn syrup (especially in juice drinks) Partially hydrogenated oil (especially in snacks) Salt/Sodium (especially in canned foods & frozen meals) Sugar & sugar substitutes (in juices drinks) Additives, colors & preservatives (especially nitrates/nitrites in prepackaged lunch meats and meals) • Remember, how much they eat is crucial. Serving Size is based on a SINGLE SERVING, and the DAILY VALUE is based on a 2,000 – 2,500 calorie diet. • Lastly, SKIP the fast food no matter how much they beg; the convenience is not worth the health risk!

Too much stress can cause a host of health problems such as headaches, upset stomach, rashes, insomnia, ulcers, high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. Here are some stress reducing tips:

FALL SPORTS

UPDATE

B Y R AY M E T O Y E R

here’s a buzz in the air and much of it is from the excitement of fall sports. It’s the time of the year when a Sport Junkie is in paradise, because almost every major sport is rolling out. Everyone knows that football kicks off in the fall! Whether it’s the Falcons, the Dogs or the Jackets, there’s a team for you to get behind. After the pre-season, the Atlanta Falcons opener is on Sunday, September 9th against the Minnesota Vikings, the start of a grueling 16 game NFL season. With a new coach and a new offense, everyone thought the Falcons would be flying high this year. Now fans are waiting to see what the team can do without Michael Vick. While Football is ramping up and going long, Major League Baseball is in full swing. The Atlanta Braves are battling for a playoff spot in the National League East. They made some big late-season trades to boost the batting lineup and the bullpen. The regular season ends on September

30th, and that’s when we’ll know which teams will still be swinging away in October. For NHL fans, the exhibition season starts September 16th and the regular season begins October 5th. That’s when the Atlanta Thrashers begin their hunt to go back to the playoffs. They went a long way last season, making it to the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals. Could this be their year to go all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals? Stay tuned. Finally, in the NBA, the Atlanta Hawks have a talented young squad that have their eyes on making the playoffs for the first time since the 97-98 season. There’s new excitement, after the Hawks got two solid first round draft picks; guard Acie Law and forward Al Horford. The quest begins with the season-opener November 2nd, at home against the Dallas Mavs. So many sports, so little time to watch it ALL. Isn’t it GREAT! w w w. c o n n e c t e x t r a . c o m

SHOPPING

Brand Name Shopping...For Less? s it possible to shop for brand names on a budget? If you are like me, you could shop all day! Stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Gucci and Burberry scare us because items can be considered very expensive. Here are a few tips to help you through your luxury store fears. Most luxury stores have personal shopper services and they don’t charge a fee, or you can also develop a good relationship with a salesperson. This person will become your greatest shopping ally, by telling you of sales, pulling items according to your profile and having them ready for you to try on before anyone else can get to them. “There is no minimum that you have to purchase to use the personal shopper services, we help everyone,” according to Queen Jones, Saks Fifth Avenue. Your favorite salesperson or personal shopper can make sure you get the best deals as well as make your life a lot simpler. But if you would rather look for your own bargains you may want to develop a system to help you get the most from your money. Patient shoppers typically plan their shopping day by looking through the newspapers for sales, making a list of the items they want or need. Prioritize the list according to needs and wants then priori-

I

tize determining the proximity between each location so that you can determine a driving plan. Not only will it make your experience more efficient, but you will more than likely also save gas in addition to money by mapping out your day. For my no list, no plan, just shop readers, when you enter the store always start with the sales racks first. A little patience will be required because you may have to thumb through lots of things to find that diamond in the rough, but it is usually well worth it. If you are near the end of the season and there is an item that may not be on sale, you may want to ask the store policy. Some stores will allow you to present your receipt for the discounted rate if it is with in 30 days of purchase. It is a frustrating feeling when you buy something and then go back to the store that next week and the same item is 50% cheaper. Don’t forget outlet stores for great bargains, like Neiman Marcus Last Call, Saks off Fifth, Loehmanns, Steinmart and Fox’s. If you like shopping online, these estores offer great name brand buys: Bluefly.com, Eluxury.com, Overstock.com, zappos.com and my beautycenter.com. OK. READY, SET, SHOP! FA L L 2 0 0 7

Katrina TWO YEARS AFTER THE STORM hen the storm and the flood waters swamped New Orleans, the infrastructure or the backbone of the city was overwhelmed. The water has now receded, the levee is repatched, and most of the mud and debris has been hauled away. But as the second anniversary of the storm passes, New Orleans is still has a long way to go. According to a new report by demographer Greg Rigamer, 60% of New Orleans residents have returned. He bases the estimate on new utility hook-ups, but says it could be many years before New Orleans gets back to its preKatrina population of 455,000. Whether you are one of the thousands of New Orleans residents trying to get back, interested in building businesses, or just want to contribute we have a few resources that may be helpful.

TAX TIPS

BY MICHAEL MONTGOMERY

es, we know it’s as close to a four letter word as you can get, but it’s never too early to start thinking about TAXES. If you start planning now, you can make your April 15th tax bill, a lot easier to deal with. Start by checking your federal tax withholding, a big adjustment missed by most taxpayers each year. If you have a child that has reached adulthood and is now claiming themselves, or recently finished college, you need to change your withholding. Other lifestyle changes that could affect you are marriage, divorce, a new child, a home purchase or retirement. Check out www.irs.gov, where you can use their calculator, to make sure you are withholding at

the proper levels. You may also be able to claim the cost of sending your child to camp. If you are working, and had to send a child under 13 years old to summer day camp, it could be deductible under the Child and Dependant Care Credit. Please review IRS Publication 503, for more information on how it might work for you. Lastly, there are tax laws that provide special benefits for the huge number of men and women now serving in the U. S. Military, even if you’re in a combat zone. Please review IRS Publication 3, Armed Forces Tax Guide for more information. For these and other great Tax Tips, go to www.irs.gov. w w w. c o n n e c t e x t r a . c o m
