From The Publisher It’s Time to Give!

ATLANTA The holidays are always a time for family, friends, and relationships. It’s time to make our holiday lists, create delicious feasts, dress for holiday parties, plan our futures, watch our sports and all of the great commercials that go with them. This season is a time of giving! Sometimes we talk a good game, but when we sit back do we truly practice what we preach? As the old saying goes “Talk is cheap!” It’s time for some action! This year has been packed with emotions. We’ve lost many angels from the soldiers in Iraq to the wonderful faces we enjoyed watching like Coretta Scott King, Ed Bradley and Gerald Levert. My thoughts and prayers go out to families of all of those we’ve lost both far and near. These angels remind us to value our family and friends. I value you and am excited to share my thoughts through the pages of this magazine. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to share some of my favorite restaurants, shows, charities and events with you. Thank you for enjoying CONNECT and being the reason for its growth. To show my appreciation, I am proud to say that CONNECT will give away some wonderful gifts throughout this quarter. We decided this issue is truly going to be about giving. Not only are we going to give you great information about restaurants, shopping, travel and business but we are also providing great charities that need your help. We’ve got some wonderful tickets to give away to great shows at the Fox theatre such as the Delta International Series and Alvin Ailey. It doesn’t end there, for the romantic how about a romantic dinner package, or some pampering. If that doesn’t excite you how would you like to lie in the sun on the beautiful island of the Bahamas? That’s right, CONNECT is sending one of our lucky friends on a wonderful trip to the beautiful islands of the Bahamas! These gifts are just our way of saying “We appreciate you for CONNECT-ing with us”

WELLNESS B E T T E R H E A LT H

Relax, Relate, Release REENERGIZE YOUR FITNESS ROUTINE BY PRACTICING YOGA elieve it or not, there’s much more to yoga than difficult pretzel poses and a little deep breathing. If incorporated into a weekly workout routine, it can provide energy, help relieve stress and even aid in releasing toxins in the body. “The physical form of yoga allows the body to cleanse by eliminating toxins and circulating blood flow throughout the body,” says Tiffany Campbell, yoga instructor at Yoga Hive (yogahive.com). “This combats stress, fatigue, anxiety and of course, aches and pains.” An ancient mind-body wellness modality that teaches participants to balance physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually, it’s no surprise that yoga has swept the country over the past few years. More than simply another fitness fad, people who regularly practice the ancient routine find that they not only lose weight, but move easier

and think more clearly. “It’s important to relax and release mental stress because if the mind is constantly going, eventually it will burn out,” warns Campbell, who has been teaching yoga for seven years. “You wouldn’t leave your car running all day without turning it off. In the same way, you have to allow the mind to have some time off. That’s what yoga teaches you— how to quiet the mind.” There are many different types of yoga, some focusing on love and devotion, others focusing on the use of meditation. No matter what form is selected, Campbell suggests coupling it with a cardiovascular workout. “Ideally you would practice yoga at least three days a week for at least an hour and cardio the other four days for at least 30 minutes,” she says. “However, you can find the combination that works best for you.”

WELLNESS F I T N E S S Finding Fitness SOME THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE JOINING A GYM

o you’re finally fully committed to losing weight. You’ve got your game plan and your cute new work out gear— now all you need is a gym. But finding a gym to join can be a little tedious; not every gym is right for everyone. With that in mind, here are a few tips to consider before you decide to join a fitness club.

S

Local Atlanta Gyms: Peachtree Center Athletic Club

www.peachtreeac.com

Check the Equipment. Take a good look at the machines, and even use some. If they grind or seem unstable it’s a sign that the equipment is not being properly maintained and the gym may not be worth your time or money.

Urban Body Studios

urbanbodyfitness.com LA Fitness Sports Club

lafitness.com

Single Out the Service. A good gym should offer you a new program every 4-6 weeks and a fitness assessment every 812 weeks. Someone should also always be around to answer whatever questions you may have.

Bally Total Fitness

ballyfitness.com Crunch:Buckhead

Determine What Exercises Are Important.. If you’re not into bodybuilding, stay away from gyms that specifically cater to that form of workout--they are typically easy to identify because they offer no aerobic classes, have tons of weights and very few bikes or treadmills.

crunch.com Athletic Club Northeast

Be Price Conscious. The price of a gym should match the quality of the equipment, service and instructors. Take a good look at the gyms in your area and do comparisons before settling on one. w w w. c o n n e c t e x t r a . c o m

HELPING HANDS THE CITY TOO BUSY Check these tax tips before giving to a charity • Make sure the organization is taxexempt under section 501 (c)(3) of the tax code. You can check an organization’s status at sites like guidestar.org. • For contributions under $250 make sure to get a receipt. For donations larger than $250 you need to get a letter from the organization acknowledging the gift and confirming it wasn’t made in exchange for something valuable—a canceled check is not enough. • Check the rules for non-cash donations. Congress recently changed the rules for vehicle donations. If the charity uses the vehicle in its programs or make substantial improvements to it, you can still deduct its full value. But if the charity sells the car, your deduc-

TO HATE FINDS TIME TO HELP ccording to the American Institute of Philanthropy, over 76,000 new charities were created in the U.S. between 2003-2004. With over 1.8 million non-profits, there’s ample opportunity to not only make a financial contribution to your favorite cause, but to become involved by lending your time, energy and creativity to a local charity. Atlanta charities have made a significant impact in the lives of people throughout the city. With an influx of celebrities now calling the city home, many of them have used their star power to make positive changes in the community. The Ludacris Foundation (theludacrisfoundation.org), for example, has donated over $500,000 since 2001 to support grassroots charities that help youth and has logged more than

CHRIS Kids (chriskids.org), created in 1981 to provide a treatment alternative to victimized children, has become a valuable resource to the community with its numerous life-changing programs. Tax Time FIND NEW WAYS TO MAKE TAX SEASON LESS STRESSFUL Tax season is a headache for most and perhaps the most dreaded time of year. But filing taxes doesn’t have to be the sign an aneurism. There are a number of things that can do to help make dealing with the IRS much easier. Why Should You Keep Records? Having organized records make it easier and less frustrating for you to file your tax return, it also enables you to explain an item on your return that the IRS might question, and could prevent you from having to pay additional taxes and penalties for unsubstantiated items. What Records Should You Keep? Specific records you should keep include: • Form W-2 and 1099 • Bank statements • Brokerage and mutual fund statements w w w. c o n n e c t e x t r a . c o m

• Form K-1 (for partnerships) • Sales slips • Invoices • Credit card receipts • Canceled checks or other proof of payment • Home purchase and sales agreements, closing statements, and insurance records How Long Should I Keep Records? Although legally you need only keep tax records for three years from the date you filed the related income tax return, you should keep a copy of your actual tax returns, W-2s, 1099s, etc., indefinitely. The IRS destroys original tax returns after three years, and you or your heirs may need information from the returns at some point, or you may need to prove your earnings for Social Security purposes.
