There’s one in every crowd: The comedian who says, “How can there be global warming when it’s so damn cold outside, ha-ha-ha.”

Or perhaps the more direct Southern variation: “Global warming, my ass!”

Those are popular laugh lines this winter for a reason. According to a recent polling, the number of Americans who don’t believe there’s such a thing as global warming is rising dramatically. And as proof that denial is perhaps the strongest human emotion, of those who do believe in global warming, a clear majority don’t believe humans play an active role in it.

So I must again call attention to the outstanding work that WTOC meteorologist Patrick Prokop is doing on his Facebook page to educate the public about the science behind climate change. Last week, he hosted an online forum inviting questions from his 3,000-plus Facebook friends on the topic. In the forum, Prokop — who says, “I desperately try to keep out of politics and stick strictly to the science” – patiently answered each question in as neutral a scientific voice as possible.

With Pat’s blessing, and in the spirit of his Facebook forums — “The whole concept is to educate,” he says — I’m going to excerpt some highlights below. The boldfaced lead-ins are my own attempt to summarize typical questions, but the answers in quotes are all his.

Why is it so cold if there’s global warming?

“The answer is short and sweet... it’s winter.”

Is climate change real or not? “In my eyes, as a scientist, looking at the evidence, I have to say it is real. The evidence is: the ice is melting at the poles, the sea level is slowly rising, the ocean temperature is rising, the oceans are becoming more acidic, the overall global land temperature is rising, the subtropical weather zones are migrating slowly northward, many animals and plants are become extinct at an alarming rate and the glaciers are melting. Is this just a natural event? After all, the earth has been much warmer than it is today, millions of years ago. However, what took earth thousands to tens of thousands of years to accomplish is being done in just a 100 or so years.”

How can we know what temperatures were when there were no thermometers? “You can still measure temperature by the amount of snow and ice, tree rings, fossil deposits, rock formation, sea bottom deposits, even little tiny sea shells in those deposits and from them you can deduct the past atmospheric composition.

It’s all part of historic geology.”

On what individuals can do: “No one needs to sacrifice... just live wisely. Cutting your carbon footprint... change lights to energy efficient CFL or LED. Insulate your homes well...

Acquire EF appliances. If you are not using it, turn it off. If you have the means, you can even install a solar hot water heater or even solar panels to generate electricity. We’ve cut our electric bill by more than in half (more importantly, the amount of kilowatt hours that we buy) by doing all of the above.”

On those predictions in the ‘70s about a new Ice Age: “Prior to the Clean Air Act, the burning of coal was basically unchecked, which spewed tons of sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere. These airborne aerosols acted as a solar reflector, much in the same way a major volcano eruption spews tons of soot or ash into the atmosphere which in turn reflect sunlight back into space. This results in a negative climate forcing value cooling the atmosphere... When the Clean Air Act was passed and scrubbers where introduced on the smoke stacks, the aerosols began to decline and the global temperature began to trend upward.

The natural cycle of climate should be toward a cooler event... But now the climate forcing due to green house gases has surpassed the negative climate forcing from natural cooling events, leading to a net gain in global heating.”

Prokop, you’re a commie pinko liberal and global warming is a hoax. “I am by no means a politician. I am neither Democrat nor Republican. I voted for Democratic as well as Republican presidential candidates. I am more an Independent when it comes to political views. I seek the science in the topic.”

Editor, Regarding your recent column on Christmas decorations: My partner and I live in the Atlanta area and travel frequently to Savannah and stay with friends of ours. We couldn’t agree more with your article.

We were down the week before Christmas and were looking forward to seeing the squares (including Forsyth Park) spectacularly lit up for the Christmas season. It was quite a dramatic let down for us. Even the lights on Monterey

Square were not even lit up.

We feel Georgia and the whole country are lucky to have a coastal city like Savannah, and feel the city could be a real draw during the holidays with the decorations and other sounds of Christmas.

I also agree your analysis with Savannah’s sister city to the north (Charleston) should be looked at for ideas.

Savannah has a lot of history to offer with its colonial past and is a beautiful place to visit and possibly live. We hope the city officials and its citizens can see its untapped potential for the city to shine even more in the future.

Again we appreciate your article – your voice speaks for many of us.

Evolution response Editor, Regarding your recent column “Never again in 2010”: I’d never consider myself a religious zealot, but I do appreciate looking at the contrarian point of view. Perhaps you will find this answer cogent: Creationists believe that God is all–knowing and all–powerful, and He created the creatures of the world in his image of perfection. Therefore and contrary to

the central theme of your riddle (whether or not God is capable of creating a world where evolution exists and operates), God doesn’t need evolution to exist and operate in order to forward His plan. If all God’s creatures are created in His perfect image, then He wouldn’t need creatures to evolve at all.

The real question is that if large segments of populations believe in either Evolution or Creationism, then why shouldn’t educators present both theories to their students and let the students decide what they believe?

Different year, same blotter

The first incident report of the New Year (CRN 100101001) — and the new decade — was a one car accident on I–516 heading west bound. Just a few minutes before midnight a young woman driving a Honda Accord struck the guard rail on the left hand side of the road.

The driver lost control of her vehicle and landed in the ditch on the far right side of the road.

The driver stated that she had consumed alcohol earlier in the evening and believed that she was driving too fast. The vehicle was towed. Happy New Year.

• The third incident report 2010 was titled criminal trespass, but seemed like it had more to do with damaged property.

About ten minutes after the ball dropped in Times Square, a bullet dropped through the roof of a woman’s house. She found the bullet and had it sitting on her kitchen table when officers arrived. As people began firing weapons into the air, the bullet went through her roof and left a small but noticeable hole. No one was injured. She felt that the damage would cost about $200 to fix, and wanted to have the police report for insurance purposes.

• The first homicide of the year happened on January fourth at five o’clock in the afternoon. Police responded to a call regarding a stabbing on Tuten Ave. Upon arrival, they found the victim who was immediately transported to the hospital with life threatening injuries. He was later pronounced dead. At two o’clock in the morning on January fifth, police located the suspect, Claude Youmans, who witnesses had seen fleeing the crime scene the day before. He was arrested and transported to CCDC.

• An officer on patrol in the area of River Street observed a white male standing outside a bar with a large cut across his face and blood on his shirt. The man was with his fianc .

They told police that while in the bar a white male with a red cell phone, plaid shirt and skinny jeans struck the man in the face with a bottle. They then said that they were thrown out of the bar by bouncers. After talking with the bouncers, it was determined that they didn’t throw the man out of the bar, and no one was sure who it was that had escorted him out. EMS was called to treat the man with the cut face, but he was not transported to the hospital for further treatment. The manager was unable to view security tapes at the moment, but did give officers his number so that he could be contacted at a later date.

• Officers arrested three suspects after a car chase that began in South Carolina. In the afternoon, the Jasper County Sheriff ’s Office informed SCMPD’s dispatch that

deputies were following a stolen car toward Savannah. Several suspects had shoplifted in the Hilton Head area and then stolen two pick up trucks – one green and the other gold. Beaufort County Sheriffs pursued the suspects. The gold truck rammed a deputy’s vehicle and attempted to run over another deputy. The gold truck then split off from the green truck and was later stopped, resulting in the arrest of four individuals. The green truck continued toward Savannah but then lost control on the Back River bridge and struck an oncoming SUV. The driver fled on foot and all three occupants of the vehicle were rounded up by officers. The truck had originally been reported stolen almost a week ago, and had been reported several days earlier as part of a shoplifting incident at Burlington Coat Factory. cs Give anonymous crime tips to Crimestoppers at 234-2020

Big-time traffickers who smuggle illegal immigrants into the U.S. from Mexico rely on GPS devices to evade the Border Patrol, but starting in June, border-jumpers who travel on their own can have protection, too. Three University of California, San Diego faculty members have designed inexpensive cell phones with special software to locate water, churches and medical facilities in the treacherous Southwest desert (while avoiding law enforcement) and will give the devices to Mexican charities. The phones, which will also feature “welcome to the U.S.” poetry, are expected to save the lives of many of the hundreds who die each year on their dangerous journeys, but illegal-immigration protesters are demanding that the academics be arrested for assisting in crimes.

Dunn, one of Canada’s leading film stunt men, and his wife and three kids, ages 15, 12 and 9, have all performed as stunt doubles (though it was the first fire for the youngest, who was 7 when the video was shot), and abundant safety precautions were taken (with no resulting complications). Are electric trains and other forms of mass transit an energy loser compared to cars? What with energy transmission costs and poor ridership (especially in California), we supposedly waste energy on subways and buses. I know it’s not going to be a popular concept, and it may be best to ignore it, and hopefully encourage more utilization of mass transit rather than discourage it. —Dano Not following you, Dano. You’re saying we should encourage transit use even if it wastes energy because transit is inherently cool? However, confusing claims on this subject are widespread.

Consider the following: • “Current public transportation usage reduces U.S. gasoline consumption by 1.4 billion gallons each year. . . . Total national fuel savings from public transportation would double to 2.8 billion gallons per year or more if improved coordination between land use plans and public transportation could replace even more car travel.” —“Public Transportation and Petroleum Savings in the U.S.,” report prepared for the American Public Transportation Association, 2007 • “Even if we could get more people to ride transit, transit uses as much energy, and emits nearly as much greenhouse gases, as cars; and the trends suggest that cars will be more environmentally friendly than any transit system in the country by 2025.”

Let’s compare the average energy efficiency of different methods of transportation, expressed in British thermal units (BTUs) per passenger mile. These numbers were compiled or computed from government sources by my assistant Una, a professional engineer: • Motorcycle—2,200, single rider.

• Heavy rail (includes subway and commuter rail but excludes light rail/ streetcar)—2,600.

• Commercial aircraft—3,100.

• Bus—4,300.

• Auto—5,500 with single occupant, 3,500 with average passenger load.

A few observations: 1. Energy-efficiency-wise, motorcycles rule. However, I'm not seeing them as a practical commuting option.

2. Trains are efficient, but not that efficient. Rail travel is a modest 30 percent more efficient than autos.

3. If the proposed 35 MPG fuel efficiency standard becomes reality, auto energy consumption with an average load will drop to 2,300 BTUs per passenger mile. On the other hand, increasing ridership due to rising gas prices will make transit more efficient too — New York MTA rail is already down to 2,000 BTUs. 4. Buses are more efficient than a passengerless car, but that's about it.

Lest you think the number is skewed by lightly traveled suburban systems, Chicago CTA buses (one million riders per workday) consume 4,300 BTUs per passenger mile, the national average.

Transit currently offers no energy advantage over cars except in the handful of cities with heavy rail — and not all of those. Estimates of auto efficiency vary depending on how many passengers you assume they're carrying, so I won't say transit is an energy loser.

Transit vs. cars is pretty much a wash.

So what’s the basis for the claim in the 2007 APTA study that transit use saves gasoline? The key word is gasoline—or more broadly, petroleum. Rail transit commonly runs on electricity; little electricity is generated using oil.

Is this a silly distinction? No, and it’s here that we get to the heart of the matter. The real issue isn’t energy efficiency or foreign oil dependence. The fundamental problem is that petroleum is sure to be scarcer in coming decades and alternative energy sources will have to be developed. Many of the obvious ones (wind, solar, nuclear) are best suited to producing electricity. Will we all be scooting around town in hightech golf carts in 20 years? Maybe. But don’t count on cruising at 80 miles per hour in your battery-powered SUV. The pro-transit argument boils down to this: transit promotes densely builtup cities, which will work from a transportation standpoint. (If all else fails, you can walk or ride your bike.) Car buffs say most people prefer suburban living—we’ll figure something out.

I wouldn’t be so sure, but I’m not that worried about it. My inner Ayn Rand figures the market will decide. cs

Prescription for savings

The City launches its new prescription discount card program that will help residents save money

Thanks to a new partnership between the City of Savannah and the National League of Cities, area residents will get a discount on prescription medications that aren’t already covered by Medicare or insurance.

The prescription drug discount card program was unveiled at a press conference in City Hall last Wednesday. The Mayor was joined by members of City Council and the healthcare community to help explain the plan and its importance for the community.

The program is free for everyone regardless of age, income, insurance coverage, or area of residence – for example, it’s even available to those living outside of Savannah’s city limits. It requires no membership, and there are no limits on the number of times an individual can use their card.

It’s a discount card, not actual insurance – meaning that you will still have to pay for medications, but just not as much – on average 20 percent less. And no, it’s not too good to be true.

The discount program is seen as a

modicum of economic relief for local families, particularly those who are uninsured or under–insured, and also a tool to help fight poverty in the area.

“This is just another example of taking the issue of poverty reduction seriously,” said Daniel Dodd, Director of the Step Up Savannah program, during his remarks at the press conference.

“We’re supportive of this, and grateful.”

The program came about after the Mayor initiated contact with the NLC in September of last year, and City staff, lead by Management Fellow Neil Obringer, has been working diligently in preparation to have cards distributed to the community.

During his remarks, Mayor Johnson reiterated how important Savannah’s relationship with the NLC has been. “We get a return on our investment sending council members to attend the National League of Cities.”

He also pointed out how council members like Edna Jackson, Tony Thomas and Van Johnson have all taken leadership positions on NLC committees, which have helped bring new continues on p. 12

Christmas ‘Utopia’ in January This past Saturday I woke up with strong resolve to take down the stale–feeling holiday decorations, clear the Christmas cards off the mantel, and hit the mall to exchange the wrong–size gifts.

But amid holiday festivities, the last weeks of December and early January brought with them an onslaught of familiar names in the obituaries–friends, former work associates, acquaintances, and friends–of–friends. Jeff LaRoe, Ricky McAllaster, James Toles, Karen Nelson, Chris Fogarty, Peter Verity, Tom Dillon, Walter Smith, Martha Fay. Last week it seemed that everyone I knew had a memorial service on their date books–me included.

Day in, day out, the papers are filled with such names, notices marking the end of a life, each name with a story, each with a list of survivors, each leaving a hole in the fabric of our city.

Sometimes those holes are close enough to me or to my friends that they divert my attention for an hour, a day or longer. Saturday was one of those days.

That morning, shopping felt like an inadequate way to pass the time. I headed downtown for my first visit of the year to the Jepson Center for the Arts, and my first visit to the Dutch Utopia painting exhibit, just under the wire before the show closed on Sunday.

It was also my first time using my brand new membership to the Telfair Museums, which I received as a Christmas present. The membership gets me in the doors of the three Telfair Museums almost anytime they’re open for the next twelve months, plus invitations to exhibit openings and lectures, and discounts at the museum stores. It’s the kind of gift that can keep on giving — or not. It all depends on me and whether I’m going to take advantage of its opportunities. Dutch Utopia seemed a great way to kick start my gift.

I arrived at the Jepson just past noon, several hours before the planned closing reception of tapas, music and cocktails.

Patrons in small groups and pairs, or solo like me, drifted from picture to picture, low voices saying hello to friends and commenting on the gray skies of some paintings, the sunshine of others, the idyllic country scenes from the Netherlands in the late 19th to early

20th century.

And of course the canals, windmills, tulips, lace and wooden shoes.

Mostly I was drawn to paintings with people, so realistic in their depiction of traits and expressions. In one, a weary– looking printer’s apprentice stares out the window on a break, while typesetting goes on at the printing press. The details of the press in the painting are precise enough to serve as instructions for a printing press assembly kit.

In another, the scene under a stone bridge along a canal seems alive, as a woman pours milk from a heavy round cask into another cask held by a friend.

A man stands with arms uplifted, reaching for a cask about to pass to him. A woman walks downstairs, carrying a heavy load in each hand, and children look on or pass items to their mothers.

I mentioned to a friend that this one looked like the still shot from a movie.

“Back then, these were their movies,” he said.

Many people remarked on a painting called “The Absent One,” a scene of three straightbacked chairs. A young woman sits in the middle chair, reading a Bible, her father behind her left shoulder, listening. The chair behind her right shoulder at first seems empty.

A more careful look reveals that on the empty chair is seated an older woman — the man’s wife, the young woman’s mother. She is transparent, but the details of her face, her hands, her dress are as precise as those of her husband and daughter. She is there and not there.

This image from 100 years ago, shows how a family keeps their mother’s presence with them: the hole in this family’s fabric as not a hole at all, but a thin spot.

Reminding me, in a good way, of the other thin spots around me, some from 15 years ago, some from the past week.

After the Utopia exhibit, from habit I scooted into the exhibit for the Kirk Varnedoe Collection. The show of contemporary paintings, photographs and prints crashed in my brain in jarring contrast to the mostly soothing paintings I’d just seen, so I ducked back out after less than a minute.

Lucky for me, I have my Telfair membership tucked in my purse. No need to cram in every show they have in a one day art overload. Next week, or the week after, I’ll head back downtown to see a show, to receive a brand-new Christmas gift in mid-January. cs

College football rivalries take to the ice as teams compete in the Savannah Tire Hockey Classic

Hockey isn’t the first sport you’d typically associate with Savannah — or even the fiftieth — but for the past dozen Januaries a unique college tournament has packed large crowds into the Savannah Civic Center.

The Savannah Tire Hockey Classic — Savannah Tire is a new title sponsor this year, succeeding Memorial Health University Hospital — pits a core lineup of four regional universities against each other on ice within the Martin Luther King Jr. Arena: the University of Georgia, Georgia Tech, the University of Florida, and Florida State University.

This year, the tournament adds two teams from the Palmetto State, the University of South Carolina and The Citadel, who skate Thursday night in the opening matchup.

“The tournament was one of those ideas where we just said, ‘Why not?’

And it’s been a huge success,” says Ben Wilder of the Greater Savannah Sports Council, organizers of the exhibition. “Our goal is to bring not only ice hockey to Savannah once a year, but tourism dollars from teams visiting and benefits for surrounding communities who like to see hockey.”

While conventional wisdom says the tournament’s main appeal is the presence of well–known universities with large local fan bases — rather than the actual hockey — that may not actually be the case.

“It’s a little bit of both, really,” says John Hoos, coach of the UGA team, usually the fan darlings of the tournament.

“We have some very dedicated, enthusiastic Georgia fans that have made this event a tradition, and we see them every year,” says Hoos. “Now that we’ve been doing this for 12 years, we’re seeing kids getting older and having fans we know come by and say hello. It’s become a fun tradition.”

Wilder of the Sports Council concurs.

“We had Georgia Southern University do a survey last year, and 70 percent of the respondents said they mainly came to see hockey. Only ten percent

said they came out of college loyalty.”

In any case, the tournament is notable for its crowd appeal. “Every year we get more people than the year before,” says Wilder. “We typically sell out Saturday, and Friday comes close.

We’re hoping Thursday night will create enough buzz to help sell out Friday this year.”

One part of the allure is the value: Friday and Saturday, ten bucks each night gets you in to see both games.

Loge seats closer to the ice — which sell out quickly — are only $15 per night.

While the teams are affiliated with the universities whose jerseys they wear, technically they play within the American College Hockey Association (ACHA). As non–varsity intercollegiate teams, the players do not receive scholarships and the teams are minimally funded by their universities.

Over the years, the teams have begun to look forward to the Savannah tournament, which comes toward the end of the college hockey season.

“This is an event the whole team looks forward to from start of the season,” says Coach Hoos. “It’s actually one of the largest stages for ACHA hockey in the country.”

“They almost never play in front of a crowd this large,” agrees Wilder.

Hoos says contrary to popular opinion, hockey is no longer a regional sport confined to the chillier climes.

The change, he says, is chiefly due to the expansion of the National Hockey League into southern markets and the expansion of youth hockey in the South.

“There are ten Southeastern Conference schools with hockey programs now, many of which are very competitive,” he says.

“Youth programs in southeastern cities have grown extraordinarily in the last 6 or 7 years. It’s a very competitive scene, with great youth hockey players coming out of Atlanta, Nashville, Birmingham, and other southern cities.

AFD Does GNR

Welcome to the jungle, 2010–style. Axl Rose may still be trying to drum up interest in his latest incarnation of Guns ‘N Roses, but the GNR that exploded into hearts and minds back in ’87 with the Appetite For Destruction album, that’s the one people are still interested in.

Axl, Slash, Duff, Izzy and the gang live on in the form of the band called Appetite For Destruction, which bills itself as “The Ultimate Guns ‘N Roses Tribute.” AFD, which returns to the Jinx Jan. 15, began 10 years ago in Raleigh, N.C. We spoke with vocalist Chad Allen, who nightly dons the tartans and headband and morphs into the screaming, swaying Axl Rose of the good old days.

You know, the guy Rose isn’t any more.

Do people expect you to be like Axl Rose offstage?

How did the band get started?

Chad Allen: I just always thought that they were like the Doors of the ‘80s and ‘90s. They didn’t stick around that long; they just kind of made their mark and fell apart. Not that say that Guns ‘N Roses doesn’t exist – Chinese Democracy – but that classic lineup. It was the classic dirty, tough–guy rock band.

Sleazy. And people like that.

Chad Allen: It was an idea that a friend of mine had.

He started putting rumors around our hometown that we were gonna do a Guns ‘N Roses tribute band.

He started bugging me about doing it, and I didn’t want to do some stupid cover band. Eventually I just kind of gave in. I thought it might be fun, and here we are. I grew up loving that music. I used to cop (Axl’s) style in high school, doing my own thing, but I would never admit to it.

What’s changed in you that you’ve held on for 10 years?

Chad Allen: Well, we’ve always kind of made a little mockery of it, to ourselves, joke about being a cover band or whatever. But it’s fun. It’s good music, and people are receptive to it. It’s our full–time job – once that fell in line it was like “This is pretty cool.”

You get to travel to other countries, and see things you normally wouldn’t.

Chad Allen: It’s just a stage thing. You see those tribute bands that try to keep that going, you know, hold on to some faux British accent or something, it’s ridiculous. It’s just a show. It’s like theater, that’s basically what it is.

There’s a lot of nostalgia for Guns ‘N Roses. Does that surprise you?

Are you sick of it yet?

Chad Allen: You go through phases where you start envying your friends who have regular nine–to– fives, and have their weekends to themselves or whatever. But I am certainly not sick of the music, and I’m not really sick of the job – there’s phases where I think I want to do something else, but then, if you start doin’ something else, you miss the hell out of this.

Dare Dukes: Accessible complexities How Savannah’s reigning singer/songwriter got re-aquainted with his musical muse

Even though he was an established singer, songwriter and guitar player in Minneapolis, Dare Dukes put his musical muse on a back burner when he moved to New York City to work as a fundraiser for after–school arts programs.

During his tenure in the Big Apple, he wrote a novel.

“I wrote one and it didn’t get published – 28 rejections – and then I started working on another one,” Dukes shrugs. “I guess I am still technically working on that one, although I haven’t touched it in two and a half years.” continues on p. 20

What changed? “When the first novel didn’t get published, I had a bad period where I was kind of wallowing around, depressed, and I started spending a lot of time writing songs,” Dukes says. “In fact, songs started to pop out of me.

I had a ton of fragments, but I wasn’t writing songs very seriously while I was working on that novel.

“I made a decision to start taking my music more seriously again – basically to give myself a break from the novel.

I knew professional musicians in New York, and they liked my stuff, so I started playing out with them. And one thing led to another.”

In the middle of this creative renaissance, Dukes’ wife, anthropologist Susan Falls, accepted a teaching gig with SCAD. They moved to Savannah in the fall of 2007.

Dukes is a rare bird among singer/ songwriters – his lyrics are both introspective and universal, his melodies quirky but sweet, and since his arrival in the Hostess City he’s become one of our most consistently engaging live performers.

Dukes and his semi–permanent backup band, the Blackstock Collection, perform Saturday at the Sentient Bean.

He named the band – which includes a revolving cast of musician characters – after a book of prints by Seattle–based outsider artist Gregory Blackstock.

Blackstock’s work, like that of Dukes himself, is deceptively simple and encompasses an eclectic range of moods and colors.

The Blackstock Collection (the band) includes banjo, mandolin, standup bass and accordion, interweaving with, and supporting, Dukes’ acoustic guitar and high, plaintive singing voice.

“I’ve always felt way more comfortable in my head voice,” Dukes explains.

“When I sing in my chest voice I tend to go flat more easily – it doesn’t feel as strong to me. And when I sing in my head voice, it always sounds bright and clear and strong to me. So I tend to write songs that are in that range.”

He’s been compared to pop minimalist Sufjan Stevens, but he dismisses the comparisons. “The weird thing is, I certainly respect his music, but every

time I hear it I can’t quite get hooked by it,” Dukes says. “But I definitely am a fan of that kind of instrumentation.”

Indeed, his first major influence was Neil Young, whose austere lyricism and loopy, hypnotic melodic sense made a strong impression on him as a youngster just falling in love with acoustic guitar.

“When I was in my band in Minneapolis, I was really trying to write power pop songs,” Dukes says. “I love the Pixies and Fugazi, and I had to work hard to write songs that were not derivative of the Pixies.

“I’m very interested in writing pop songs. I wrote a literary novel, I can do that – and I’ll hopefully do it again some day – but I also love really accessible music. On the other hand I want it to be sort of intelligent and surprising and all that stuff.

“The artists that I like tend to do that.

Their music is accessible but also complex. Neil Young is like that. The Pixies are like that. I love Tom Waits, whose stuff is like that.”

His debut CD, Prettiest Transmitter of All, is packed with adventuresome pop songs, many of them leading to uncharted areas both pointedly cerebral and charmingly unexpected. He’s just started working on his second album.

Dukes says he’s learned to let the muse take him by the hand. “Early on when I was writing music, I tried to follow my plans,” he explains. “I wanted songs to sound a certain way. But little accidents happen, and now I try to follow those and see where they take me.

“I want to write love songs; I think it’s really hard to write the perfect love song. For the better part of the past 20 years, Tim Cridland has been driving sharp skewers into his tongue and pushing them out through his neck, chewing on shards of glass, using his body to conduct electricity and walking barefoot across a bed of razor–sharp knives.

All in a day’s work for Zamora, the Torture King.

The 46–year–old Cridland is a veteran of the contemporary American sideshow circuit. He also has a regular gig in Las Vegas, and has written a couple of books on freakeries, oddities and the darker aspects of the thrilling performance arts.

As Zamora, he’ll be a part of the Hellzapoppin Sideshow Circus, pulling into the Wormhole for a performance Wednesday, Jan. 13.

Like the traveling sideshows and freak– o–ramas of old, Hellzapoppin includes a healthy (depending on how you look at

it) cross–section of people with strange ... talents.

There’s the 3–foot Penguin Boy (24–year–old Jason Brott), who was born without arms – his hands are literally growing out of his shoulders.

There’s Lady Diabla (Alexandra Kaminski). She’s a sword swallower who also bathes in the sparks from an electric grinder.

And magician and illusionist John Shaw, who can escape from virtually anything.

Cridland, a native of Washington State, was a founding member of Seattle’s Jim Rose Circus Sideshow, which in the early 1990s introduced the sideshow/freak show concept to a new generation of tattooed rock ‘n’ rollers, doing small–town club dates and sharing the bill with metal, punk and grunge acts.

It caught on – in a big way – when Rose and crew (including Zamora the Torture King) signed on for the early runs of the famed Lollapolooza Tour.

The ringmaster and emcee for Hellzapoppin, which bills itself as “The Greatest Show in Hell” is Bryce Graves. He’s also the show’s founder and producer; he even drives the restored prison bus in which the colorful troupe travels from town to town.

The Torture King, however, reigns supreme in this twisted universe.

How do you do this stuff without hurting yourself?

Tim Cridland: Basically, I’ve been studying the techniques, through the years, of people in other countries, Middle Eastern countries and India. I read about this when I was very young, and I was fascinated by it. I studied everything from anatomy books to books of circus techniques to learn how to do this without harm. And also things like self–hypnosis.

So it’s actual demonstrations of mind over matter. I’m able to change the way my body responds. But I also know my anatomy very well, so I’m avoiding things like major arteries, nerve bundles, things like that.

Yeah, but I’ve seen photos of that pointed skewer coming out your neck.

Doesn’t that, like, hurt a lot?

Tim Cridland: I know the places to put it where it’s going to have minimal damage. That is certainly a part of it.

What makes this different from the old–school freak show?

Bryce Graves: It’s very different, because we use a lot of dark comedy.

John Shaw is a very modern sideshow performer, with a very rock ‘n’ roll, biker look to him. We’ll bring out Lizard Man, and yo–yo performers.

Things that are newer, that the kids can understand and get. It’s not about burning the history of the sideshow; it’s more about “a show.”

We kind of look at the show as more of a dark, creepy comedy type of show.

We all have fun, and we rip on each other in the show. Little Miss Firefly, she’s a tiny little midget girl, she comes and chases me around the stage with different things. It’s more comedic, where the older sideshow was the traditional sword–swallowing and fire–eating.

Tim Cridland: The entertainment value of it is always what had attracted me.

When I was young, I was fascinated by accounts of the old–style entertainment, which no longer existed. Certainly it was all about the performance, which was attractive to me. It is all about being entertaining, but also about being shocking and amazing at the same time.

I‘m just looking to make them applaud, and hide their eyes at the same time. If they can do such a thing!

What does Penguin Boy do onstage?

Bryce Graves: He does several things, and an act called the blockhead act.

He’ll take a screwdriver and places a condom all the way over it. Then he

shoves it all the way through his nose. It goes in almost four inches, all the way into his head. He pulls the screwdriver out and leaves the condom on the inside. He then sucks the condom through his nose and out his mouth.

And throws it on the audience.

He also lifts a lot of heavy objects with his ears – earlobe weightlifting.

And a lot of great things with crowd participation. We have a whole bit about how penguins fly, and then we throw him into the crowd and they do a big crowdsurfing thing.

Has anybody ever dropped him?

Bryce Graves: Oh yeah. The first time he was dropped we were in Sweden.

The stage was literally seven feet off the ground. You know, he tells the crowd what he’s going to do. And all these guys – like 10 guys – where he was running to jump for, they all had their hands up.

And they thought it would be funny to move. And he flew off the stage and hit the ground.

We’re talking about a guy that has no knees, and he wears braces on his legs.

Instantly, I’m devastated, I ‘m thinking he’s hurt. He gets up, he gets right back up on the stage, he grabs the mic and chews those guys out, then starts it all over again.

How did he become part of your show?

Bryce Graves: Penguin had led a pretty sheltered life in Baltimore, and he had some health issues. He was on dialysis.

He’d never really gone too far away from his house.

He came to see us at Ozzfest, as a spectator. I went right up to him and said Dude, you have hot to come and hang out with us.

When I first met him, he was 20, and his mother had taken care of him his whole life. He had to kind of prove to her that not only was he grown up, but he could be responsible and take his medications. He got a kidney transplant, and now he flies home every month to do blood tests, just to make sure his levels are all right. We’ve been on the road together for a couple years, and there haven’t been any problems at all. Brothers Grim was an authentic, turn–of–the–century, old–style sideshow. I took it on the Ozzfest, Vans Warped and the Family Values tours, a bunch of shows like that. And it was difficult to sell to the audience – I wanted to focus on a younger demographic, and because it was an older–style show, the kids just didn’t get it. That’s one reason why I broke off. I wanted to make it more modern, something more of a rock show. Kind of like Iron Maiden meets GWAR meets Tom Waits and sideshow blended together. That’s what I’ve done with Hellzapoppin.

Body Beats, Thomas Chan and Si Cho Body Beats is a musical wall sequencer that uses facial recognition software to allow participants to create a melody using their bodies.

Virtual Ground, Andrew Hieronymi This multi-player physical game installation utilizes computer vision and full-body interaction. Players connected by projected lines attempt to control a rebounding particle in order to light up a grid in this large floor projection.

Taking place outside the Jepson Center in York Lane, this installation is a meditation on travel which never reaches a destination. Through a mix of projected imagery—architectural structures, traffic signs, and other cultural signals—the interactive work will place audience members in a state of urban dislocation. The Medeology Collective includes artists Allessandro Imperato, Kelley McKlung, James Gladman, and Matthew Akers.

The festival features installations, workshops in game design... and robots?

On the cutting edge of creativity

The Telfair’s Pulse Festival opens next week to kick off eleven days of future shock

From solar powered robots to art that knows when you’re looking at it, get ready for a look into the future. Next week, the Telfair’s arts and technology festival, known as Pulse, kicks off an eleven day showcase of installations, workshops, lectures and performances from a scintillating mix of artists, geeks and scientists presenting programming that you won’t need an advanced degree to enjoy. You won’t need a lot of money either, because all of the festival’s events are free (although some do require registration in advance).

“The festival is not an esoteric sort of program where you’re going to a conference and you’re listening to very specialized language,” says Harry Delorme, Senior Curator of Education at the Telfair. “I’m very concerned with being a very accessible festival.”

Now entering its second year as an official “festival,” Pulse actually began three years ago as a short string of technology programs that has now grown into a comprehensive series that will illustrate emerging technologies’ impact on fashion, music, art, video games and the human experience. No small feat.

“Some of these installations will give audiences here a chance to see the world a little differently and create a potential in the technology that’s around us as well as some of the new technology and new media that artists are working with,” says Delorme.

The festival opens Wednesday, January 20 with an impressive pair of installations from internationally acclaimed artists. The first, which will actually remain in the Jepson on display beyond Pulse is Counterillumination by Shih Chieh Huang, who is known for transforming everyday objects ranging from

over–the–counter consumer electronics to water bottles and plastic bags into elaborate alien environments.

The second installation, called Body Beats, by Thomas Chan and Si Cho is musical sequencer combined with facial recognition software that allows participants to create melodies with their body parts.

One of the non–local acts who is returning after a well–received performance during last year’s festival is Eric Singer, who is the founder of L.E.M.U.R., the League of Electronic Musical Urban Robots.

On Friday, January 22, Singer will be joined by fellow L.E.M.U.R. artist Zemi17 and the duo will unleash their new invention, called the GamelaTron, a robotic version of a traditional Indonesian gamelon choir.

“This will be the furthest it’s ever travelled,” explains Singer, who must, after inventing these robotic musicians, find ways to transport them around the world. “The thing is, no one makes a case for a GamelaTron or any part of it.

We have to make our own.”

Although building robots that make music seems unassailably awesome, Singer is clear that it is the music, not the engineering that is the most important part of what L.E.M.U.R. does.

“There’s the cool tech factor to the robots, but if the music isn’t there, if human expression isn’t part of the process, then all you have is gadgets,” he explains. “I wanted it to be about a new way of making music.”

And that’s all in the first few days.

As the rest of the festival unwinds, programs will touch on fashion technology workshops to outdoor video installations and more.

“I think we’ve got some really exciting folks coming in for the festival,” says Delorme. But, the festival isn’t just about importing exciting eccentricities from around the country, and Delorme remains focused on highlighting some of the interesting artists and projects that are here locally too. “I want to give these local artists working with technology a chance to show their work or try new things.”

One of those local talents is SCAD professor Andrew Hieronymi, who is a member of the Interactive Design department, and an accomplished artist in his own right, whose work has been exhibited at shows around the world.

During Pulse, he’ll be conducting a workshop in Casual Game Design, and he’ll debut a new installation piece, which he hopes to take beyond Savannah very soon.

“This new installation I’m showing here, which is a first, I hope I’ll be able to show it a bunch of places,” says Hieronymi.

The “casual” in his workshop title describes the relaxed pace of the games participants will be designing, not the availability of the technology that goes into making them. Although designing a game from beginning to end can take months or years, Hieronymi will show break participants up into teams who each design basic game concepts. Then using something called computer vision and a projector, everyone will interact in their new games.

“Computer vision is very simple,” Hieronymi explains. “It’s just the idea that you’re using a camera to track and make sense of what’s in front of it.”

Instead of using complicated motion capture suits, a camera recognizes the

motion of a user’s silhouette and sends that to a computer. The computer than takes that and translates it, using open source software, into something that is used to control the graphics that are projected onto the screen. Basically, you move around in front of the camera, and in real time, you are controlling a character in a game you and your team just designed. Whoah.

Interactivity is part of what makes Pulse such a unique offering at the museum. Unlike the average visit to observe art, this is one festival that allows visitors to participate and to hopefully gain something more in the process.

“I hope that they’ll be excited and challenged,” says Delorme. “I hope they’ll be engaged in a participatory way.”

Even though technology can begin to seem mundane in an age when every tween has a cell phone and never known a world without the internet, Delorme sees the 11 days of Pulse as an opportunity for everyone, especially young people, to see beyond the ubiquity of gadgets, and understand not only the engineering behind them, but the capabilities for self–expression that exist beyond them.

“I want local students, kids, to feel that they have some sort of connection to this, and that this is something they can do,” says Delorme. “Technology is not just something to be consumed, it can be used for creative purposes.” cs To get a full schedule of events, visit www.telfair.org and to reserve space for programs that require registration call 912–790–8822.

Reconsidering Chardonnay Chardonnay gets a bum rap, let’s face it. This ubiquitous white wine became a mundane staple of house wine lists everywhere. It became the poster child for boring party wines and even gave rise to it’s own mantra: ABC — Anything But Chardonnay.

I’m guilty of a little disdain myself. Sure, I like Chardonnay, but to identify a column–worthy label seems like a no–win scenario. So many Chardonnay’s, so little space. OK, so I’ll turn over a new leaf in the New Year.

One reason wine drinkers are blessed, or cursed, with so many Chardonnays is malleability to conform to so many different wine–making techniques. The open character of the grape responds as well to long, cool fermentation in stainless steel as it does to aging in oak barrels.

In fact, it is one of few white varietals that can stand up to new oak — and live to tell its own story.

That same muscle allows Chardonnay, when blended with other grapes, to retain some of its own hallmarks.

And that story is as varied as the manner in which the wine is aged. Typical descriptors — some of which are seemingly in contradiction — include citrus, floral, apple, pear and even honey.

Keep in mind, too, that the red–headed stepchild we call Chardonnay is almost entirely consumed in France as Champagne or as decadent and delicious bourgogne.

Differing styles could be blamed for the backlash against Chardonnay. The oaky, buttery California Chardonnay that rose to popularity in the 1980s is also the same wine that led to Chardonnay’s demise. There are still plenty of examples of these wines out there, but today’s Chardonnays offer much greater balance and the best ones are succulent

expressions of this very ripe tasting grape.

Here are my thoughts on a trio of Chardonnays to try: Four Vines 2008 Santa Barbara Naked Chardonnay: Why “naked?” Because this pristine, stainless–steel fermented Chard has not even passed by an old oaken barrel. For you who shun the wood, this one’s for you! No malolactic fermentation — the process that creates buttery characteristics in Chardonnay — occurred. Drinkers are left with a high acid wine that tastes of crisp apple, peach and pear — along with a hint of minerality and citrus. This wine is a sauteed scallop’s best friend.

Charles Smith 2007 Eve Chardonnay: A long, slow ripening season adds to the beauty of this highly affordable and nicely oaked Chardonnay from near legendary Charles Smith. The Washington state wine was fermented in stainless steel and aged in French oak, only 15 percent of which was new, for 10 months. It is lean, crisp — very Chablis–like in character.

You should experience a nice mouthfeel with this wine — and experience beautiful traces of apples and honey with a trace of chalky minerals on the finish. Invite Eve over for grilled shrimp and Thai dipping sauce.

Chalone Vineyards 2007 Monterey Chardonnay: Depend on a complex mix of subtle pear, mineral, pleasant earthy notes and floral scents from this California Central Coast vineyard. The label has had its ups and downs — but the last couple of vintages indicate a turning point. The slightly pricier ’07 Chard Reserve even earned 29th place in Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Wines of 2009.

Gently sweet oak tones add character; minerality insures a clean finish. This is a Chardonnay that’s as tasty as it is affordable. Put on barbecued chicken for this elegant wine. cs

There was no one happier than me when Sam Harris opened his downtown bakery in 2007 — and it’s been a joy to watch the business and the

products grow better and better. As I hustled by one cold day last week, I was gob–smacked to a stop by the menu board: Okra Gumbo. A queue of indecisive and eccentric diners teamed with a slow ordertaker to push my wait in line to nearly 15 minutes — too long considering that only three people were in front of me. This is not a quick lunch stop — it’s a place to languish and take in the great smells. The gumbo was beautifully made, thick, rich and piping hot. The okra had cooked down to bits and seeds; the onion and celery were succulent and tender. The big chunks of tomato were garden flavorful. Of course, a generous piece of sourdough bread that was heavenly soft inside and nicely crisp on the outside was perfect for pushing bites onto my spoon and mopping up every delicious morsel. Harris’ style is influenced by his European and San Francisco training — and a life–long heritage of being in the family’s restaurant business. I didn’t know the bakery also served a great cup of coffee, but celebrated that news with my dessert — a plump, brown cinnamon roll. It was textbook–perfect in construction and offered a great balance of sweet glaze and cinnamon filling.

What a wonderful respite on a cold winter day.

Juan Manuel Rodriguez of Southside’s Rancho Alegre Cuban Restaurant is busily working on a new downtown restaurant that will be located in the former Metro Coffee House location at 402 MLK Blvd. Juan Manuel has some serious culinary chops — I love swapping cooking stories and recipes with him. He promised to keep me in the loop — I’ll let you know when opening day nears. In true Savannah fashion, everyone — and I mean everyone — crushed into little Leoci’s Trattoria beginning on opening day and haven’t let up. If you went and didn’t have the best experience, give Chef Roberto a few weeks and try back. Honestly, we’re all enthusiastic to have great Italian food, but we’ve nearly killed the guy. The buzz is that P.F. Chang’s — an early adopter of the stalled Savannah River Landing project — is still beating the bushes for a Savannah location. Apparently, they’ve trained their sights on Broughton Street. The curious part of me wonders why the folks who frequent Blowin’ Smoke BBQ’s outdoor area don’t seem to move inside to eat in the winter — they just stay home. Same good food, same cold beer — and I bet Brian will turn up the music — or not. cs

Good, bad and ugly: The Psychotronic Film Festival’s got ’em all

There is a presumption, Jim Reed believes, that his weekly film screenings at the Sentient Bean are nothing more than kitsch, with titles like Beach Blanket Mutants From the Planet Picard and The Nazi That Ate Chicago.

Cult favorites: “The Wicker Man” (Jan. 27) and “The Trial” (Jan. 20).

Reed’s Psychotronic Film Society does, to be sure, occasionally feature cult movies that are – in the parlance of the film geek – so bad they’re good.

But there’s much more to it than projecting some cinematic cheese on the wall, as he wants to prove with this week’s seventh annual Psychotronic Film Festival.

“The overwhelming majority of films that I show are not bad,” Reed explains. “They’re not even ‘so bad they’re good.’ They’re actually really interesting, good films that have fallen through

film Reed is most excited about. “It’s not for the faint–hearted,” he says. “A lot of people may find it offensive. It’s a very bizarre film, and it’s the most psychotronic film in the entire festival.”

Bare Knuckles (1977). Gritty, violent disco–era grindhouse film about bounty hunters in Los Angeles, directed by the inimitable Don Edmonds (Ilsa: She Wolf of the SS). Monday, Jan. 25.

Bone (1972). Sci–fi and B–movie writer/director Larry Cohen (It’s Alive, The Invaders) had a tough time with this very dark comedy starring Yaphet Kotto as a serial rapist terrorizing a snarky suburban couple in their home.

The film was pulled from distribution, re–edited, and re–titled Housewife, in an attempt to focus on one of the supporting characters. Then it was re–edited again and pitched as a horror movie called Dial Rat For Terror.

“It’s a message movie, but the message never got delivered,” Reed explains.

“It’s a movie about very intense, serious actors kind of going at each other for a while. It’s caustic and provocative, very well made, but it’s not a lightweight piece of fluff. It really requires the viewer to pay attention.” Monday, Jan. 18.

Five Million Years to Earth (1967).

Also known as Quartermass & the Pit, this British creeper from the legendary Hammer Film Studios finds a long–dormant swarm of alien locusts buried beneath contemporary London, and ready to be awakened and take over the planet. Tuesday, Jan. 19.

Tampopo (1985). Japanese with subtitles. According to Reed, “it has been described by critics and viewers as funny, touching, shocking, sensual, weird, thoughtful and cute – and as a brilliantly constructed insight into Japa-

nese culture’s twin obsessions: food and custom.” Tuesday, Jan. 26.

Tomorrow I’ll Wake Up and Scald Myself With Tea (1977).

Apparently they don’t come much weirder than this Czechoslovakian sci–fi yarn about a time–traveling Nazi who attempts to give Hitler the H–bomb, so he can win the war.

The Trial (1962). Orson Welles was long past his Citizen Kane glory days when he directed this surreal, intense adaptation of the Franz Kafka novel, starring Anthony Perkins as an innocent man trapped inside a corrupt and venal legal system. It was a huge flop and has rarely been seen, but Reed says that “many people consider it the finest piece of filmmaking Orson Welles ever did.”

Wednesday, Jan. 20.

The Wicker Man (1973). Fully restored “director’s cut” of a disturbing and violent British classic about pagan rituals on a remote island. “I think it’s one of the greatest suspense/ horror films ever made,” Reed says.

“I’m hoping that people don’t stay away because they saw the terrible Nicolas Cage remake. They’re night and day.”

The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus The late Henry Fonda had the good fortune of ending his distinguished film career with an Oscar–winning performance in the popular On Golden Pond, while, on the opposite end of the spectrum, both Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin found their mutual swan song to be the Hall of Shame turkey Cannonball Run II. Most stars, however, bow out in a less conspicuous manner via a film that’s neither exemplary nor execrable, and that’s certainly the case with Heath Ledger.

Ledger’s last completed film before his tragic death was, of course, The Dark Knight, for which he won a richly deserved Academy Award as The Joker. But the actor was already hard at work on Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus when he accidentally OD’ed on prescription pills. Rather than close shop on the entire production, Gilliam found a way to finish the film without his leading man.

Gilliam’s ingenuity in this matter is to be commended, even though one wishes the end result was a better tribute to a remarkable talent taken before his time. Ledger, for the record, doesn’t play the doctor of the title. That role falls to Christopher Plummer, whose Parnassus can be seen as Gilliam’s own thinly disguised view of himself –– a visionary whose primary desire is to demonstrate his brilliance to a world that often isn’t capable of handling it.

The head of a traveling show that stirs vague thoughts of the one from Ingmar Bergman’s The Seventh Seal (Gilliam’s pictures are occasionally steeped in movie lore), Parnassus once made a deal with the devilish emissary Mr. Nick (a welcome Tom Waits), a bargain that granted him immortality but now means he’ll be forced to hand over his teenage daughter Valentina (promising newcomer Lily Cole) on her next birthday. As Parnassus renegotiates the deadly deal with Nick (more shades of The Seventh Seal), he and the other members of his troupe – Valentina, the sensible Percy (Verne Troyer, Austin Powers’ diminutive Mini Me) and the annoying Anton (Andrew Garfield) – are joined on the road by the rakish Tony (Ledger), an amnesiac on the run.

The centerpiece of Doctor Parnassus’ show is a magic mirror that harbors a fantastic landscape on the other side. The visions that greet those passing through are sometimes delightful, sometimes dangerous, but always eye–popping –– think of a cross between Alice’s Wonderland, Yellow Submarine’s Pepperland and Gilliam’s own creations as part of the Monty Python gang. And it’s on the other side of the looking glass where Gilliam solves the problem created by Ledger’s passing.

As long as the character of Tony remains in the real world, he’s played by Ledger, but after he goes through the mirror, he’s portrayed first by Johnny Depp, then Jude Law, and finally Colin Farrell. It’s arguably the best possible solution to an impossible dilemma, but it’s not as if the film’s troubles ever began and ended with Ledger.

Instead, Gilliam, whose last two pictures were the 10–Worst–list placeholder The Brothers Grimm (with Ledger) and the barely seen Tideland, has once again allowed the visuals to overwhelm all other aspects of the production.

Co–writing the script with frequent collaborator Charles McKeown, he has crafted a messy tale that gets tangled up in its own garbled plot strands (some surprisingly trite) and shortchanges the actors by giving them ill–defined characters to play. To be fair, the screenplay might have been more finely tuned before Ledger’s death forced some tinkering, but based on the excesses of several of Gilliam’s past pictures, there’s a sense that the original draft wasn’t much more polished than what finally made it to the screen.

Ledger is effortlessly charming (and clocks more screen time than I had anticipated), but Tony is a thin role, all the more so when compared to the actor’s meaty parts in Brokeback Mountain and The Dark Knight. Still, fans will want to catch this final screen appearance, even if it comes wrapped in regret. Because once we see him stepping through that mirror for the last time, we know he won’t be coming back to us.

The Road Zombies seem to be de rigueur in today’s strain of post–apocalyptic motion pictures, yet this adaptation of the novel by Cormac McCarthy (No Country for Old Men) offers nothing quite so fanciful. The undead shambling through this bleak movie’s ravished landscapes are, technically speaking, still human, though many have taken to eating human flesh, and all seem to be moving forward as though propelled by a natural instinct to survive at all costs. Among the ragtag survivors are a father–son team identified only as Man (Viggo Mortensen) and Boy (Kodi Smit–McPhee); solely dedicated to protecting his child, Man does his best to steer clear of all other humans, lest they be what he tags “bad guys” (those with murderous, cannibalistic urges); his paranoia makes him even wary of seemingly harmless strangers, like the elderly man they encounter on the road (Robert Duvall, doing the most with this juicy morsel of a role).

Up in the Air In the cinema of 2009, Ryan Bingham should by all accounts emerge as the Protagonist Least Likely To Be Embraced By The Nation’s Moviegoers. That’s because Ryan works as a downsizing expert, hired to come in and dismiss employees that their own bosses are too gutless to fire face to face. Ryan is excellent at his job, which would make him the antagonist in virtually any other film. But because he’s played by charismatic George Clooney, Ryan becomes less a villain and more a representative of the modern American, a tech–age person trying to reconcile his buried humanity with what he or she believes is necessary to survive in this increasingly disconnected world. That’s the starting point for this superb adaptation of Walter Kirn’s novel, but the film covers a lot more territory – both literally continues on p. 36

and figuratively – before it reaches the finish line. As Ryan jets all over the country doing his job – the opposite of The Accidental Tourist’s Macon Leary, he loves traveling and hates the handful of days a year he’s forced to spend at home – he makes the acquaintance of a fellow frequent flyer (Vera Farmiga), and they strike up a romance that’s among the sexiest and most adult placed on screen in some time. Yet Ryan’s carefully constructed life threatens to crash and burn when his company’s latest hire (Anna Kendrick), a whiz kid just out of college, implements a plan that will require the grounding of all employees, including Ryan. Penning the script with Sheldon Turner, director Jason Reitman (now 3–for–3 following Juno and Thank You for Smoking) has created a timely seriocomic work that manages to be breezy without once diminishing the sobering realities that constantly hover around the picture’s edges (for starters, the fired employees interviewed in the film are not actors but real workers who were let go from their jobs). Farmiga and Kendrick are excellent as the two women who unexpectedly alter the direction of Ryan’s life, yet it’s Clooney, in his best screen work to date, who’s most responsible for earning this magnificent movie its wings.

avatar The only film capable of surpassing Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen as the Fanboy Fave of 2009, James Cameron’s massively hyped Avatar at least differs from Michael Bay’s boondoggle in that it’s, you know, entertaining.

On the other hand, the notion that it represents the next revolution in cinema is nothing more than studio-driven hyperbole, because while the 3-D visuals might rate four stars, Cameron’s steady but unexceptional screenplay guarantees that this falls well below more compatible marriages of substance and style found in such celluloid groundbreakers as the original King Kong, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Toy Story and Cameron’s own Terminator films. Here, the story meshes Dances With Wolves and Pocahontas with, amusingly enough, the animated flop Battle for Terra - it’s the year 2154, and the Americans have decided to destroy the indigenous people on a distant planet in order to plunder the land and make off with its riches. Avatar is rarely deeper than an average Garfield strip, but Cameron’s creation of a new world demands to be seen at least once.

SHERLOCK HOLMES The stench of Van Helsing hung heavy over the trailer for this interpretation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s sleuth extraordinaire – hyperkinetic editing, loopy deviations from the source, an unintelligible plot – but the end result turns out to be far more successful than those early warning signs indicated.

Not a great film by any stretch of the imagination, director Guy Ritchie’s full–speed–ahead effort still qualifies as decent holiday–season fare, with Robert Downey Jr. vigorously portraying Holmes as a brawny, brainy gentleman–lout and Jude Law providing measured counterpoint as sidekick Dr. Watson.

The storyline isn’t always interesting as much as it’s overextended – at least one plot strand could have been excised – and Ritchie’s pumped–up techniques often make this feel less like a movie and more like a video game promo. But there’s still plenty to enjoy here, and the ending all but guarantees a sequel – box office returns be damned.

IT’S COMPLICATED After the triumph of Julie & Julia, Meryl Streep heads back to the kitchen for an erratic comedy in which she plays Jane, a successful baker and restaurateur who, a decade after divorcing Jake (Alec Baldwin), finds herself cast in the role of the “other woman” once she embarks on an affair with her remarried ex. Writer–director Nancy Meyers (Something’s Gotta Give) surprisingly goes too easy on the character of Jake, a decision that leaves a bad taste and drains some of the fun out of this otherwise agreeable (if rarely uproarious) bauble. But Streep’s comic chops remain strong, and the film gets a significant boost from the presence of Steve Martin as a sensitive architect who finds himself drawn to Jane.

NINE The biggest disappointment of the holiday season – make that the biggest disappointment of the year – Rob Marshall’s second celluloid musical (after the accomplished Chicago) proves to be both tone deaf and flat–footed.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: Two city slickers whose knowledge of world history extends only to the NYC boroughs are forced through contrived situations to stay in rural America, where they adapt to regional cuisine (lots of mayonnaise), view animals as alien beings and remain leery of the locals. If you’ve heard that one, then you’ve certainly heard about the Morgans, a dimwitted comedy in which an estranged couple (Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker) find themselves hiding out in Wyoming after they witness a murder back in the Big Apple.

Here’s yet another movie that should be neither seen nor heard.

The Princess And The Frog Given the Disney studio’s recent disdain toward traditional hand–drawn animation, it’s sometimes hard to believe this was the company that over seven decades ago proved that toon flicks deserved to be on the big screen as much as their live–action counterparts. After all, the outfit with countless classics under its belt, some as recent as the 1990s (Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King), had all but abandoned the format in this new century, squarely throwing its support behind computer–animated fare and releasing a scattering of old–school mediocrities (like Treasure Planet) that were saddled with limp scripts and uninspired voice casting. So is The Princess and the Frog the start of a new era, or merely a hiccup that will quickly be stifled? It’s hard to predict, but for now, it’s a pleasure to have an old–fashioned animated effort that actually stirs memories of past glories. Directed by John Musker and Ron Clements, the team that made

The Little Mermaid (which kicked off the modern spate of Disney classics) and Aladdin before losing their way with Hercules and Treasure Planet, The Princess and the Frog adds a decidedly jazzy spin to the venerable fairy tale. It centers on Tiana (Anika Noni Rose), a young woman living in early–20th–century New Orleans. Toiling as a waitress but longing to save enough money to open her own restaurant, Tiana finds her fate intertwined with that of Prince Naveen (Bruno Campos), a visiting royal who’s been duped by the nefarious Dr. Facilier (Keith David) and turned into a frog. Tiana reluctantly kisses the now–green Naveen in an attempt to help him turn human again (as per the fairy tale), but the plan backfires and she instead finds herself joining him in an amphibian state. The Princess and the Frog refuses to be pegged as a product of a specific period, and in that regard, it’s a welcome throwback to the timeless toon tales of yesteryear.

INVICTUS Invictus represents a rare misstep for Clint Eastwood, - sad to say it finds the prolific 79–year–old merely coasting for more Oscar gold, tackling the sort of safe, sanitized fare that used to attract stodgy filmmakers like Richard Attenborough on a regular basis. Simplifying complicated South African issues to the level of a Berenstein Bears storybook, the movie focuses on the initial years of the presidency of Mandela (portrayed

by Morgan Freeman in a competent if uninvolving performance), who emerged from decades in prison bent not on revenge against the whites who oppressed him but instead seeking unity in this post–apartheid South Africa. Finding resistance from both sides of the racial divide, the saintly leader decides to use the sport of rugby as Ground Zero for solidarity, working with the captain (a functional Matt Damon) of the country’s mostly white team to build national pride by taking them all the way to the 1995 World Cup Championship game. The first half of Invictus is the superior portion, since Mandela is front and center for most of the running time. Unfortunately, the second part devolves into a typical sports drama focusing on an underdog team battling its way through incredible odds, and this narrative direction forces Mandela to remain on the sidelines of the movie itself.
