This year’s holiday should be a real humdinger. A lot of people still can’t handle what happened on Nov. 4. They are unable to cope. They’re losing it.

I listen to a lot of sports talk in the car. The other day I was flipping through the stations and heard Rush Limbaugh yakking about the “Obama Recession.” You know, the same Barack Obama who was elected in large part because of the recession, and who doesn’t take office for another two months. That Obama.

Georgia Congressman Paul Broun got his political movements hopelessly confused when he freaked out and warned that Obama was a “Marxist” who’d install an “American Gestapo.”

Even closer to home, there was a letter in the Savannah Morning News last week blaming Franklin Roosevelt and “socialism” for the Great Depression. You know, the Great Depression that began in 1929 – three years before FDR took office.

Yup, totally losing it. And they’re not alone.

Though the epic scale of Obama’s victory has made the U.S. less Republican as a whole, a few holdout states are becoming even more Republican, I guess out of spite.

Any guess as to which is among them? Hint: It’s in the title of a Ray Charles song.

While Chatham County gave Obama nearly 60 percent of the vote, don’t be deceived. We’re still a part of the Peach State, where John McCain won easily, and where only 23 percent of white voters supported Obama.

At some point Georgia will pay a price — a literal price, as in dollars — for this stubborness.

This is the nature of politics in the age of the pork barrel. Elections have real consequences.

Parenting parents

Mayor Otis Johnson seems puzzled a lot lately. No wonder. Johnson thought a trip to China by city officials was a wonderful idea, but the trip came under fire by aldermen and residents alike.

Then came the Parental Support and Responsibility Ordinance. The ordinance was given its first reading at the Savannah City Council’s Nov. 20 meeting, and Johnson obviously thinks it’s a good idea.

But, to his puzzlement, the ordinance immediately came under fire. “For years and years and years, we’ve continually heard complaints about parents who are not doing what they’re supposed to do,” Johnson told the council.

“Now that we’re trying to help these parents, we’re already hearing from the doom sayers.”

A member of the audience was first to question the proposed ordinance. “My parents did everything they could and it didn’t matter,” he said, pointing out that if the ordinance had been in place 20 years ago, his parents could have faced charges for a situation that was his fault, not theirs.

City Manager Michael Brown, who helped craft the ordinance, shares the mayor’s enthusiasm for it. The ordinance was developed after several meetings with school officials, law enforcement, advocacy groups and others concerned about the issue, he said.

Brown said the man’s story demonstrates the need for the ordinance. “He makes a very heartfelt and valid point,” Brown said. “But this is a parental support ordi-

But perhaps our biggest problem isn’t that we’re governed by Republicans, but the type of Republicans we have. Frankly I’d be overjoyed to have a Republican governor as practical and competent as Florida’s Charlie Crist or even South Carolina’s Mark Sanford.

But no. We’re saddled with possibly the worst governor in America, Sonny Perdue, who inexplicably still has high approval ratings despite giving tax breaks to his personal property, trying to sell parts of Jekyll Island to cronies, responding to the drought by praying for rain, and begging for business in China while half of Atlanta’s gas pumps went dry.

Then there’s our Sen. Saxby Chambliss, up for re-election Dec. 2, better known in D.C. for his passion for golf than any passion for legislation.

So do you want to continue Georgia’s rightward lurch, or have some representation in touch with the new majority? It’s up to you. The runoff election is this Tuesday. cs

Brown said parental responsibility ordinances have been enacted in cities across the country.

However, those ordinances tend to be punitive in nature.

Savannah’s ordinance wouldn’t work that way, Brown said. “If parents can make the case that they are making a diligent effort, they’re not going to be charged,” he said. “They’re going to get the help they need. This is not the stereotypical parental responsibility ordinance that labels children as failures, that labels parents.”

Brown said a case management approach to determine if the system has helped children or failed them will be used. “It’s not intended to be punitive,” he said. “But there are many parents who haven’t made a diligent effort.

They’ve washed their hands of the child far too early in the process.”

The purpose of the ordinance is to identify children who aren’t complying with probation or remediation programs, then

determine if the parents are trying to help the child, or instead are contributing to the problems.

Brown said those parents would be steered towards counseling, parenting classes or agencies that could offer support.

Alderman Tony Thomas said some juvenile criminals are on the streets because they’ve been suspended or expelled from school.

“How is the ordinance going to account for them?” he asked. “A lot of the kids getting into trouble are ones being put out of school.

It’s a shame law enforcement can’t get information about the children from the schools when we have all this chaos going on.”

Kris Rice, director of the Coastal Children’s Advocacy Center, questions the city’s ability to provide the services required by the ordinance. She told the council she supports the ordinance, but said many programs in the city are underfunded or overwhelmed by heavy case loads.

Editor, Kristin’s article “Tools can’t fix renovation drama” in the Nov. 5-11 paper was spot on. I was estimated by the contractor I hired that he should be done with the work on my house in three weeks (which I estimated an extra week) but SURELY he would have been done by Labor Day, the first week of September... ha!

My husband and I were involved DAILY - calling to find out why no one had shown up, providing lists of what still hadn’t been done, keeping an eye out daily to guide the subcontractors on what needed to be done because the general contractor we hired hadn’t shown up yet, or had “gone to Home Depot” for something he’d forgotten... for hours... or for the rest of the day, and we were on top of what was going on with the City’s permitting process.

DESPITE that, it was nearly Halloween that we finally paid our balance on a final walkthrough, where we got $500 knocked off because they had ruined our existing floors which they felt was our word against theirs, and if we had cared about the floors we should have told them before they started — ridiculous!

Needless to say, we’ve nearly lost our sanity from this one-month-turnedthree-month project where we questioned why we hired a general contractor with as much time and work as we had to put into managing it.

I’d like to think I’ve learned something from this and that next time it has got to be better. But I really don’t know if the resident homeowner can find someone who will actually come out for an estimate, then actually provide a quote, and then agree to a detailed contract with very specific terms of how to conduct work in your house. You MUST have shining recommendations, and if you don’t have the money for the best — save it up, DO NOT SETTLE FOR LESS. Here are some lessons learned: • Make sure the contract has EVERY detail of what you expect the work to include — even if it’s on a plan.

• Do not let contractors convince you that it’s not worth getting a permit.

They say it will delay the work, but it was a minimal delay if any on my project. Instead it guaranteed that the contractors would do work up to the code and the City will send impartial experts out to verify that the work was done right — it was for my protection!

• Do not give a lot of money up front,

ony enough for supplies (we were able to get down to 25 percent I think). You always need to withhold enough along the way so that if the contractor walks off, you have enough to hire someone else to finish the job.

• Withhold some small amount until after the last punch list and inspection is complete... and honestly, I don’t know if we withheld enough. I think it was the promise of remodeling our kitchen next that kept our contractor coming back near the end.

• Detail what has to be done to keep your house protected.

• Don’t let them get away with showing up when they choose to. Set up a schedule.

A vote for the Jims Editor, Thank goodness for another chance on December 2nd! Another chance to choose Jim Martin and Jim Powell, Democratic candidates for Senate and Public Commission. Georgia’s 50% rule allows for a run-off election since a clear majority was not reached on November 4th.

Once again voters have a chance to exercise their democratic right to select candidates to fill those two positions. Both Martin and Powell offer to Georgians service for the majority of the people. They are not beholden to corporate interests like their Republican opponents, Saxby Chambliss and Lauren McDonald.

Saxby “Shameless” Chambliss has launched an attack campaign falsely accusing Jim Martin of having pushed through the largest tax increase ever in Georgia. You’d expect such tactics from Saxby if you think back to his outrageous lies spread about Max Cleland in the 2002 election, lies labeling Max as: “unpatriotic and soft on terrorism” and even subtly associating him with Osama bin Laden by juxtaposing their pictures together in a campaign ad.

Imagine: Chickenhawk Saxby who got out of the military on a “trick knee” (a la movie war hero Frank Sinatra deferred from WWII with a “gimp elbow”) baselessly attacking triple amputee veteran Max Cleland as unpatriotic. John McCain even called Saxby Shameless’ lying “reprehensible.”

It’s amazing that McCain himself would now become so reprehensible that he’s out campaigning for Chambliss this election. However, considering the world of “politricks,” it’s not really that amazing.

Not only did Chambliss lie his way into office in defaming Cleland but also according to whistleblowers, he even had that election rigged by having a Diebold device added to computers around Atlanta. Once again corporate media has failed to follow up reporting on election fraud just as fraud in Ohio was ig- nored by the media in the 2004 Presidential election. It seems election fraud is not newsworthy anymore, at least, not in the corporate news media.

Now it comes out that Saxby has been covering for Imperial Sugar’s owners. He has tried to turn blame of negligence on sugar plant’s Vice President who was a whistleblower on the plant’s safety problems. Further, he has tried to discourage and intimidate families from suing over deaths and injuries resulting from the plant catastrophe.

Corporate ties, something especially typical of Republicans fawning after large campaign donations. What Martin and Powell stand for is supporting the middle class by following suit with Obama’s plan to raise taxes on those making over $250,000 while giving those making less tax relief.

Basically, Martin and Powell are standing up for the middle/working class while their opponents are bent on serving the wealthy elite who fill their cam-paign coffers. We have the opportunity to elect men who will represent the majority of people. I hope this time around enough people see through lies and smears spewed out by Republicans and realize Martin and Powell will serve Georgia very well.

Failing the whales Editor, Regarding Summer Teal Simpson’s oh, so sad (subject matter, not article which was pertinent and well done) article, “The Navy and the Whale”, I would like to add the following: That sonar stuff the Navy uses? It’s destroying the very fabric of the ocean.

The sonar system used by whales and porpoises to communicate is being disrupted, so we’re losing that, which is a great loss. The Navy needs to STOP USING SONAR! The Roberts court is a disgrace.

Two guys named Jim

Martin, Powell hope to unseat Republicans in Dec. 2 runoff, while Chambliss stays on defensive

The Democratic Party of Georgia refers to them simply as “the Jims.”

Jim Martin and Jim Powell are their hope for the future. Banking on Barack Obama’s success, the party’s website trumpets “The Change Continues,” with photos of the two runoff candidates.

But can Jim Martin actually defeat incumbent Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss? Can Jim Powell obtain a seat on Uncle Sonny’s all-Republican Georgia Public Service Commission? Well, yes -- if the Democrats can maintain the momentum drummed up for the Nov. 4 general election.

The entire nation is watching the Chambliss-Martin race, with a Democratic win bringing the party enticingly closer to the 60 seats they would need to resist any Republican filibuster. Former President Bill Clinton stumped for Martin in Atlanta, and, in a statewide radio ad, Obama asked Georgians to vote for Martin.

The flow of non-stop e-mails from the Martin camp indicates his staffers are determined to see that he wins. Visit the Chatham County Democratic Party headquarters, and you’ll see the same level of excitement that was seen in the days leading up to Nov. 4.

And Chambliss? Mitt Romney stopped by to speak on his behalf. So did John McCain — you know, the guy who lost.

But it’s going to take more than Chambliss’ ties to the Bush Administration to defeat him. Ironically, it may be Chambliss himself who does the job, by refusing to provide details about his involvement in the Imperial Sugar case.

No one in Savannah will forget the explosion at the Imperial Sugar Factory last February that killed 14 people and injured 40, making it one of the worst industrial disasters in Georgia’s history. In July, a U.S. Senate hearing was conducted on the disaster, and Graham H. Graham, Imperial Sugar’s vice president of operations, testified that he had warned the company of dangerous conditions at the plant, but was ignored.

Even though Chambliss isn’t a member of the Senate Subcommittee on Employment and Workplace Safety,

which conducted the hearing, he was allowed to question Graham, repeatedly interrupting him and questioning his sincerity. Critics were quick to accuse him of badgering Graham and siding with a corporate donor (Imperial Sugar gave $1,000 to Chambliss’ campaign in 2007) rather than the working-class victims of the disaster.

In October, Chambliss was subpoenaed and ordered to provide evidence in lawsuits filed on behalf of two survivors of the blast and two victims who died. Through his attorneys, Chambliss said he doesn’t have to comply with the subpoena because he’s a U.S. senator.

That sent local labor union reps well over the boiling point. On Nov. 20, they held a press conference in Port Wentworth to call on Chambliss to provide details about his involvement in the Imperial Sugar case.

“What are you trying to hide by trying to dodge the subpoena?” asked Stewart Acuff, an assistant to the president of the Georgia AFL-CIO. “It’s very simple, Sen. Chambliss. Show up, answer the subpoena, help us find out what happened, why it happened, who is at fault and help us bring them to justice.”

“It’s a tragedy,” said Georgia AFLCIO Secretary-Treasurer Charlie Ray. “He has not stood up and spoken up for the interests of Georgia.”

Fourteen American flags line the road next to Imperial Sugar to represent those lost in the blast. “Those flags represent Americans who gave their lives, who went to work that morning, who were planning on coming home and didn’t,” said Brett Hulme, president of the Savannah Regional Central Labor Council. “Mr. Chambliss, do the right thing. If you have nothing to hide, what’s the problem?”

The race for the Georgia Public Service Commission isn’t at the level of the U.S. Senate race, but it’s still important to Georgians -- at least those who pay utility bills.

“Bubba” McDonald of Habersham County, didn’t return phone calls or emails requesting an interview. However, according to his website, he served in the state legislature for 20 years, at one point serving as the House Chairman over Appropriations.

McDonald previously served a four-year term on the GPSC. During his tenure, he says the GPSC reduced electric rates by more than $1.2 billion and resisted federal efforts to deregulate electric service in Georgia. It is “conservative fiscal management” that has kept rates low in the south, McDonald says.

The current issues as McDonald sees them are: affordable utility rates; energy production (he supports the construction of additional nuclear reactors in Georgia); energy infrastructure; environmental controls, including the conversion of older coal plants to newer technologies; and conservation through cost-efficient renewable programs.

His opponent, Jim Powell, was in Savannah recently on a campaign stop.

Powell currently works as an independent energy consultant to states, local governments and industry after retiring from a 35-year career with the U. S. Department of Energy.

Powell sees the issues as low and affordable rates, consumer advocacy and fuel source diversity, The GPSC race shouldn’t be partisan, he says.

“In many states, it’s not a partisan

election,” Powell says. “Members are appointed by the governor.”

But experience is needed. “Energy is so important you can’t afford to learn on the job,” Powell says.

“We’re in the midst of an energy crisis. The tilt is in favor of the utilities.

We need to bring balance there. The utilities need to made a fair profit, but not an exorbitant one. Georgia is in the dark ages as far as energy. New ideas, innovative thinking is where we should be 20 years from now.”

People don’t pay attention to the Public Service Commission, Powell says -- but they should. “They make some decisions that affect everyone,” he says.

“Our choices are nuclear, coal, gas, natural gas, and they’re not going to build any more hydro,” he says. “Energy efficiency is our best option. Renewable energy is our next best.”

The future holds real hope that energy issues can be resolved. “Barack Obama wants a $15 billion bill into research and development,” Powell says.

“Right now we’re spending $1 billion.

That’s a $14 billion a year increase. Assuming Congress goes along with this, the whole landscape is going to change.

ized when it’s the parent who should be penalized,� she said. “We don’t have a functioning mental health system in this community. You can’t offer services you don’t have,� Rice said. “Some kids get in trouble at school, so they get home-schooled.

The regulations are too lax in Georgia. You only have to have a high school diploma or a GED to teach your children at home.�

Home-school children are required to have just 4.5 hours a day in lessons, Rice said. She said the ordinance should be extended to apply to those children as well.

Affordability of services is another concern, Rice said. Not all services are free. “If a child has a history of abuse or violence, then we will see them for free (at the Child Advocacy Center),� she said.

Brown said the city is aware of the lack of services. “The case management system has to be sophisticated enough to recognize who is accountable,� he said. “But if we have children with mental health problems, how can we charge the parent with negative support?

We have to look at alternative education, Brown said. “What do you do when a child is so disruptive in the classroom setting? You don’t need that child on the streets.�

Even with issues that will have to be resolved, Brown said the city needs to go ahead with the ordinance. “It’s not liberal, it’s not conservative, it’s a very progressive approach,� he said.

The mayor said the problem isn’t a lack of services. “It’s the effectiveness of what we have,� he said, adding that some services should be consolidated.

Alderman Cliffton Jones said he doesn’t think parents should be held responsible for the actions of a child. If the child is old enough to make a decision to do something wrong, the child should be held accountable for those actions, he said. “I think the problem with being a trailblazer is there’s no template to follow,� Alderman Van Johnson said. “We are really treading water here. We know young people who are not engaged get into trouble,� he said. “We know children who are not engaged have children.

Local prosthetist David Puckett is CNN Hero of the Year finalist

A crowd gathered in City Hall last Tuesday to celebrate the accomplishments of local prosthetist David Puckett, one of 10 finalists of CNN’s Hero of the Year Award for his work with a non-profit organization.

Puckett’s organization, PIPO Inc. Missions to Mexico, offers free medical assistance to poor people in southern Mexico in need of prosthetic limbs or orthopedic braces.

Puckett was given a key to the city

by Mayor Otis Johnson as supporters held up signs proclaiming David as ‘Savannah’s Hero.’ Puckett has been thrust into the international spotlight thanks to CNN’s Hero of the Year Awards, and Tuesday’s event was a chance for the hometown crowd to show their appreciation.

Out of over 3,700 candidates from 75 countries, Puckett was named one of 10 finalists, an honor which includes an award of $25,000. The contest culminates Thanksgiving night at an award show that will name one of the finalists Hero of Year. Before flying out to Los Angeles for the show, Puckett spoke with Connect by phone.

What drew you to the field of prosthetics and orthotics?

David Puckett: When I was a kid I always wanted to be a doctor. I lost my dad when I was 17, and I lost my direction for a little while. I followed my uncle into engineering and was studying that at the University of Michigan.

I met a fellow who was a prosthetistorthotist, like myself now, while I was working in the mall at a tuxedo place and he drew my interest back into the medical field after speaking with me.

Most people get into the field because they are an amputee or knew someone who was an amputee. I got into the field because I had a love for people and wanted to help restore and promote healing. I was so interested that I applied to different graduate programs and before I knew it I was head over heels in love with the field and here I am 20 years later.

How did you end up going to Mexico?

David Puckett: I went when I was

18 with a group from my church for a rebuilding project in a village. The following year, I was so interested in helping out down there that I returned.

I lived there with a family working and living with them for 6 months. That birthed a strong desire to help them out physiologically with their needs, and I said to myself that if I ever get into a field where I can come back and help these people substantially then that’s what I’d like to do.

Ten years later I found myself in the field of prosthetics and orthotics, I got into my own practice in 1999 and I thought it was a perfect fit, having my own practice and being able to do the mission program. We’ve been doing it ever since and have made about 60 trips so far.

Is there a particular risk for limblessness down there?

David Puckett: Believe it or not, the per capita numbers of amputees and orthopedic brace users are not that much different from those in our country. The difference is that people here most of the time have insurance or the financial wherewithal to be able to get the medical care they need to blend in to society; or they get preventative care, which means that they don’t need the orthopedic brace or artificial limb in the first place, and you don’t see them sticking out like a sore thumb like you do down in Southern Mexico. The people there don’t have the financial wherewithal or insurance coverage so they just go without.

With so many cases, is there a system to delegate who gets care first?

David Puckett: We give care to everybody that we see. The only people that I will turn away are those who I don’t see as a safe candidate, or people who show up driving a Mercedes or a Cadillac.

How did you end up on CNN’s list?

David Puckett: The 3,700 nominees were sent in from 75 countries. In my case, the nomination was sent in by a gentleman who had taken an interest in our program here, and who knew about the CNN program. They proceeded to narrow the list of 3,700 down to 30, which was done by a blue ribbon panel at CNN. From the 30 they narrowed it down to 10. This blue ribbon panel consists of people like Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Franklin Graham, Magic Johnson, Dr. Deepak Chopra, Jane Goodall, and so many famous celebrities. I’m humbled that these folks took an interest in my program and in our mission program that they nominated me to be one of the 10.

Will the attention you’ve received enable you to do more outreach?

David Puckett: After the first CNN story ran, we were just lambasted with emails, phone calls, donations, mailings and stuff like that, to the tune of about $12,000, which doesn’t seem like all that much, but coming in all at once, it was great. We continued to get a trickle of donations and I know that regardless whether we win or not, we were fortunate to be in the Top 10 and receive a prize of $25,000. Now depending on how the voting goes, we’ll see whether we’re up for the $100,000 award from CNN. How would winning the grand prize change what you’re able to do?

David Puckett: We’ve thought about the possibility, and I’ve already got plans for it. We’ve talked about building a small medical clinic in Southeastern Mexico. Our budget is shoestring, and our expenses for this year put us in the red a little bit, so part of it would go to get us out of the red so that we can get into a better position to help people further, but the majority would go to building this clinic.

If local people are interested in helping your organization, what can they do?

David Puckett: Go to our website, www.pipoinc.com, and click on our Mexico Missions link. There are 4 things people can do. They can support us financially, and with it being the end of the year, people are looking for a tax deduction. Second, they can donate artificial limbs and orthopedic braces, clothing, kids toys or canned goods and we take those down with us. Third, if they know medical health professionals who are interested in participating with us, or lay people who are interested, they could consider buying a ticket and working with us on a mission trip, which we do about six times per year.

Fourth, we are always in need of volunteers here in our office for a variety of tasks, and we’re always looking for people who can give a couple of hours a week or a month to help with the non-profit. Parking is people II I use my car for most around town trips—not due to any emotional attachment to the Subaru, but because it’s the easiest way to get myself and my stuff from home to wherever I need to go. Most of the time, driving my car is some combination of a faster, more convenient, more comfortable, or cheaper way to go than any other means.

Auto congestion, and its relief, is big news in Savannah of late, with projects like the Ellis Square garage and Project DeRenne generating much well-deserved enthusiasm. But, as noted last week, the issue isn’t really about too many automobiles trying to get to the same places at the same time.

The issue is people—more people wanting to do more things in places that are popular or are close together. And most of us find that, despite an increase in traffic and a decrease in easy nearby parking spots, using our cars is still the optimal way to do what we want to do.

A solution to the problem of how to get people where we want to go involves a change in perception—on my part and on the part of the people in charge of economic development in our city.

My part? Be willing to think outside the box a little. Like most people, I’m usually only motivated to do so when it works to my immediate advantage.

Many days I find my to-do list including a 45-minute exercise walk around Daffin Park, followed by a series of short errands in the car that, if done on foot, would cover about the same amount of mileage and time.

One Saturday in late October I decided to walk my errands—an effort to save time that resulted in an experience resembling an obstacle course drill instead of a power walk.

Heading south on Waters I went eight blocks to Savannah Dry Cleaners, then five more blocks, crossing the into Medical Arts Shopping Center for a grouper po’ boy at My Place Café and cash from The Savannah Bank’s ATM. From there it was only four blocks or so for an on-time arrival for a coffee date at a friends’ house on 65th Street.

Along Waters Avenue, sidewalks are in place for only about two blocks of the 13-block stretch to Medical Arts, including a ten-foot long “sidewalk to nowhere” leading away from a newlooking bus shelter.

A church, two convenience stores and two auto repair shops have paved parking areas across the fronts of their businesses, providing walkable surfaces along my route but requiring me to play “dodge the autos” as cars backed up or turned in from the roadway.

Two blocks of Waters are abutted with dirt paths beaten into the grass from many walkers trudging back and forth over the years. Several times my walk led me into the oncoming auto travel lane, due to steeply sloped yards or wide, water-filled pits, often where the service lanes intersect with the street. Had it been a busy weekday I would have been stymied by the confusing Delesseps intersection with cars coming from five directions.

Hiking conditions along 65th Street were only slightly better.

My trip was a success despite its challenges, but I’ll be thinking twice before I try it again soon. It’s no wonder that driving is usually my travel mode of choice, and I’m not alone in thinking this way.

It appears that for decades our community leaders—retail developers, city administrators, large employers, elected officials and even some neighborhood activists—have adopted the habit of using the automobile as the baseline for moving customers, homeowners, students, employees, patients, and visitors to and from their establishments.

Future on-foot errand trips could be aided by an expansion of the type of thinking that seems to be underway in some offices of City Hall. The approach being applied by Project DeRenne to the two-block area adjacent to DeRenne Avenue is an excellent model to apply to support the people living and working in neighborhoods north and south.

With hospital employees and medical residents living nearby, how about a sidewalk and bike path network that puts pedestrians and cyclists on even footing? How about a network of sidewalks to and from Medical Arts and other nearby dining spots for medical and dental employees on lunch breaks?

It takes time and effort to change the way we think, and still more effort to change the way we act. I’ll keep trying to come up with easy or convenient ways to get where I need to go, and hope for better sidewalks in the decades ahead. And in the meantime, there’s always the Subaru. cs

Night of the Long Knives

A woman was arrested and charged with aggravated assault after she stabbed her boyfriend with a kitchen knife.

Police were called to a West 39th Street residence because of a domestic dispute.

A man at the scene had a small puncture wound on his upper left chest, so an officer called EMS. The man said he and his girlfriend had gone to a party and came home late. They began arguing, and the man threw a pair of the woman’s pants outside.

The woman went and got a kitchen knife, then went towards the man. He told her she wasn’t going to do anything with the knife, and she stabbed him, then threw the knife in the kitchen sink. The woman seemed intoxicated and was very unsteady on her feet. She smelled like alcohol and was unable to concentrate on details.

She told police her boyfriend was mad at her and picked up a knife and stabbed

himself in the chest so he could get her in trouble. The man said he didn’t want to press charges.

The woman was arrested. The man was taken to Memorial Hospital. The woman’s sister was baby-sitting at the time and was able to stay with the suspect’s children, none of whom were awake or in the room when the incident occurred. The knife was recovered from the sink.

• An officer was traveling on President Street and Truman Parkway. A car was stopped in the left lane of traffic, and appeared to have broken down, causing traffic to slow down.

The officer stopped to assist. A woman came out of the driver’s side and said she ran out of gas and that someone was coming shortly to assist her.

The woman’s tag had expired in January, and the officer asked the woman if she was aware that her tag was expired. She said she did know, and she said she’d been aware of the expiration for some time.

When asked for proof of insurance, the woman said she didn’t have any. When asked if the car was uninsured, the woman admitted that it was.

She was cited for expired tag violation and no insurance. The car was towed from the scene and a friend took the woman home. The woman said she’d lived in Georgia since May, but she was driving on a driver’s license from Colorado. She was given a verbal warning for not obtaining a Georgia license after becoming a resident.

• A concerned citizen called police to report a “sick person” on Ventura Boulevard.

An officer who arrived on the scene saw a man lying face down in the gutter near a brick mailbox. A second man was standing near the victim, who was breathing but unresponsive. EMS arrived at the scene and began treating the man.

The second man said he didn’t see what happened, but was walking by on his way home when he discovered the victim. He said he placed a jacket over the man and called 911.

The victim regained consciousness and said he was on his way home from work

when he was attacked by a man who robbed him and knocked him out.

His mother came to the scene to take the victim home.

• A West 59th Street resident told police her former roommate came looking for her.

She said the man walked to the side of the house where the power meter is located. Shortly after, the power went out.

The woman asked the man why he took the power meter from the house, but he didn’t answer. She said he walked across the street, picked up a brick and came back, throwing the brick through the front door, breaking the glass in both the screen door and the front door of the house. The man threw a second brick through a front window.

Without gravity, how do female astronauts menstruate while in space?

— Gayle, Ventura, CA For a while there, Gayle, the question wasn’t how women would menstruate in space but whether it was too risky to find out. Although the first female cosmonaut, Valentina Tereshkova, had flown in Vostok 6 in 1963, women were excluded from the U.S. space program during its early years. The official reason was that U.S. astronauts were drawn from the ranks of military test pilots, and all the test pilots were men.

If you ask me, though, the real reason was American male panic about women and their mysterious inner workings.

Several plane crashes in the 1930s had involved menstruating female pilots, and experts—male experts, of course— suggested that putting a woman with “menstrual disturbances” in the cockpit was an invitation to disaster. Some space medics still harbored serious concerns about menstruation when NASA began planning to put women in space in the 1970s.

From a certain point of view, I suppose, these concerns weren’t completely crazy. When a woman has her period, normally the menstrual flow is forcibly expelled from the cervix. However, given the low-gravity environment of space, some scientists wondered about the possibility of “retrograde menstruation,” the backward flow of menstrual blood up into the fallopian tubes. This occurs sometimes on earth and is thought to lead to endometriosis, a disorder in which tissue that normally lines the uterus grows where it shouldn’t. menstruation occurs in space, and even if it did, it probably wouldn’t cause endometriosis: reverse flow seems to trigger this condition only in those who experience it chronically. Returning women astronauts who’ve menstruated in space report that everything worked the way it usually does.

According to Principles of Clinical Medicine for Space Flight (2008), astronauts have “access to multiple sanitary products for menstruation, including pads, mini-pads, and tampons in plain and deodorant versions,” and presumably capillary attraction accomplishes what the lack of gravity can’t. Incidentally, for times when going to the bathroom is impossible for an extended period, such as launches, spacewalks, and landings, “crewmembers of both sexes have available a maximum absorbency garment (MAG) that can retain up to 2000 ml of urine, blood, or feces.”

Not ideal, but a small sacrifice to make for the world’s coolest job.

Female astronauts do face some challenges. Internal medicine specialist William Rowe notes women are more likely to develop decompression sickness during periods. That’s a problem mostly during space walks, so he suggests any excursion by a woman be timed for a different part of her cycle. Before you peg Rowe as a chauvinist scumbucket, note he also thinks women are better suited than men to a low-gravity environment. In a 2004 article in the Journal of Men’s Health and Gender, he argues that for space exploration an all-female crew might be the best bet. His reasons: (1) Menstruation rids the body of iron. That’s a good, because space flight can reduce one’s production of a protein that normally sops up excess iron, and “increased free iron can be extremely toxic.”

(2) Women produce a lot more estrogen than men, and they also have lower epinephrine levels. For reasons we needn’t get into, these factors reduce the likelihood of heart attacks and other cardiovascular problems while in space.

(3) Some Apollo 15 astronauts experienced pain and swelling of fingertips while on the surface of the moon. Rowe hypothesizes this is less likely to happen to women because “estrogen reduces vascular smooth muscle tone.”

It might also be pointed out that women take up less room in cramped spacecraft cabins, consume fewer resources, and are more inclined to ask for directions when lost. cs

Melting water from ice caps in Antarctica and Greenland, and that from mountain glaciers worldwide, has replaced warmer temperatures as the main force behind rising sea levels, according to a new study. Using satellite observations, Anny Cazenave of France’s National Centers for Space Studies found that thermal expansion of the seas virtually stopped after 2003 due to a respite in ocean warming.

Gravity measurements of the Earth revealed the Greenland ice sheet is losing about 150 gigatons of ice each year. Combined with the loss of ice in West Antarctica, melting has contributed about 1 millimeter (.04 inches) per year to the rising seas over the past five years. Ocean levels have been rising since 1993 by almost double the rate they did during the previous 50 years. The trend could have disastrous impacts on millions of people who live in low-lying coastal areas.

Australian Swarms Fresh swarms of maturing locusts swept across parts of Australia’s New South Wales state as many farmers were preparing for harvest. About a dozen swarms, one nearly 4 miles long and more than 500 feet wide, were spotted in the south and west of the state. Christmas with I Cantori

This 33-member singing group, which bills itself as “Savannah’s premier chamber choir,” presents their eagerly anticipated holiday concert for two performances — both under the direction of its founder, Robert Harris. This year, the varied program includes Yuletide compositions from two different continents, and spotlights Carols of both Spanish and Polish origin as well as more widely known Christmas songs.

Arrangements come courtesy of such notables as Robert Shaw, plus, in what’s billed as a very special treat, this year’s recitals feature a guest soloist: Baritone Jason Moon. This internationally-known classical vocalist specializes in opera and oratorio, and will be remembered by many for his memorable local debut in the Savannah Choral Society’s recent production of La Traviata.

He’ll be featured on a quartet of British Carols arranged by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Tickets for these shows are $15 for adults and $10 for students, and will be sold at the door both nights.

This relatively new local trio makes a surprising amount of ruckus with just a guitar, bass and drums — but that’s perhaps to be expected, as their lineup includes former members of such beloved

Not ones for aggressive self-promotion, this local, southern rock-influenced, jam-oriented quartet of two guitars, bass and drums is nevertheless one of the most solid groups on the regional bar and nightclub circuit — and from time to time, they hit the road, playing festivals and clubs within a few hours of their home base.

Anchored by the rhythm section of drummer Josh Fallin (a fluid timekeeper with a percussionist’s flair for snare drum grace notes, cymbal flourishes and seemingly endless tom rolls) and bassist Adam Celeste (formerly of the little-known but mightily impressive regional funk-metal outfit Undermind), the band is essentially fronted by guitarists Tyler Roe (who doubles as lead vocalist) and Shane Baldwin. Both are extremely capable soloists with distinctly different amp tones and playing styles, which complement each other’s immensely.

Routinely compared to the Allman Brothers Band (if only for the Gregg-like husk in Roe’s bluelocal rock, blues, pop and R & B acts as The Veraflames and Bluesonics. Lead vocalist and guitarist Bob Erickson loves Tx.-style blues, and it shows in the roadhouse grit of his rhythm playing and the biting, mournful arcs of his solos.

The setlist is mostly covers, but these guys put their own stamp on most everything they interpret — from blues to boogie to beach music. They’re definitely several cuts above the usual “corner of the bar” combos in the area. No cover.

Passafire looks ahead Local reggae-rockers’ careers heat up

Over the past few years, Passafire has steadily become the latest example of an original, rock-oriented band that has made significant waves outside our immediate area.

Like Kylesa, Baroness, Perpetual Groove and —to a somewhat lesser extent— the Eric Culberson Blues Band, GAM and Circle Takes The Square, Passafire has woodshedded here in a locale that routinely provides plenty of inspiration for musicians, if not always the right kind of venues.

Initially producing, recording and manufacturing their own albums, they also successfully licensed several of their tunes for use in the soundtracks of extreme sports DVDs. These days, however, they can more often than not be found on the road.

They recently signed to LAW Records, which specializes in the type of dance-friendly, groove-heavy reggae-based alt.rock Passafire delivers, and soon the quartet will head into the studio to track their third album.

This Wednesday night, the band plays a rare, free hometown show in City Market at Wild Wings. I caught up with keyboardist Adam Willis for a lengthy game of catch-up.

You guys did a show with Van Halen.

How did that go?

Adam Willis: It was huge. We heard David Lee Roth was a reggae fan and when our agent pitched the idea to them Roth really liked the record and put us on. We flew out to Reno for the date and were amazed by the scope of it all. We went on in front of about 5,000 people. We were a bit worried about crowd reaction but when we went on everyone went nuts!

What’s growing your fanbase the most?

Is it radio play, word of mouth, internet buzz, or something else?

Adam Willis: The biggest promotional tools for us are MySpace and Facebook.

We are reachable by our fans and they love that we write all of them back.

Columbia City’s Nutcracker livens up Thanksgiving weekend

William Starrett says don’t let the name fool you. Despite being based in South Carolina’s capital city, his Columbia City Ballet is “esconced” in Savannah.

In fact, the troupe has been performing the holiday classic The Nutcracker here for over 20 years, always on Thanksgiving weekend at the Civic Center.

“We feel Savannah is a family destination. My feeling is if you’re going to go somewhere for Thanksgiving you need someplace to go to after you finish the turkey,” explains Starrett. “You’ve got relatives there, you’ve got shopping on Friday, you get in the holiday mood on Saturday, and people still have all day Sunday to get back home.”

Starrett says the event is always planned for 5:30 p.m. — “so there’s still time for shopping, and it’s not too late for grandparents and children.”

While The Nutcracker has always been about kids, Starrett stresses that the Columbia City production is a professional performance, not — in his words — “a recital.”

Still, like any Nutcracker, there are plenty of kids involved. “I have more than 40 local dancers from all different dancing schools participating — it’s not just walkon little kid parts.

We’ve found an extraordinary amount of talent in Savannah.”

Starrett says it’s important for the challenging roles to be danced by pros, or at minimum by senior members of local dance schools. “If you Alston MacGill

don’t have that contrast of energy between them and the little ones, it’s not a full journey for Clara.”

Unlike with many productions of the ballet, Starrett thinks that young dancers should work into the major roles.

“With us, children are doing children-appropriate roles. Our principal dancers are professionals, in their mid20s and early 30s, with children, husbands and families,” he says. “One day when the kids are in their mid-20s, then they can become the Snow Queen.”

Starrett says local dancers have been rehearsing since August, after two large audition sessions in late summer.

Columbia City ballet masters and assistants make the road trip to Savannah to rehearse with the local talent.

“This is not just a road show coming in,” he says. “This is a full production that helps economic development in Savannah. The first thing CEOs ask when a city is trying to get a company to move to a city is, ‘Do you have any arts?’”

Savannah isn’t the only out-of-town stop Columbia City makes. They’re taking The Nutcracker to several other cities.

“To be able to afford this, once you mount a production and the more you can perform it, the more return you have on your product,” Starrett says.

“We have a higher caliber dancer, and a professional wants two things: Wonderful training, and they want to be able to perform a lot.”

Of course, the lead child’s role in The Nutcracker is the part of Clara, the little girl who takes the dreamy flight of fancy to the Land of Sweets. Playing Clara in Savannah this year, as last year, will be an Oglethorpe Academy seventh-grader, 11-year-old Alston MacGill.

“We’ve been rehearsing for about a month,” MacGill says.

While much of her choreography remains the same as last year’s production, she says she’ll be taking on an expanded role.

“Last year I didn’t do the second and third parts,” she says. “This year I’ll be doing those parts, which have a lot of partnering and lifts.”

Interestingly, MacGill —who also dances in the STUDIO’s upcoming Swingin’ at Club Sweets — isn’t only dancing Clara in Savannah. She’ll also be dancing the role in Columbia City’s Nutcracker in Vidalia, Beaufort, and Walterboro, S.C. In all, Starrett says, “what I’m really trying to do is bring professional dance to Savannah.”

In a perfect world he’d like to expand to two Nutcrackers locally, and begin bringing more ambitious, non-holiday ballets to Savannah on a regular basis, such as Dracula and Cleopatra.

Body language

As a Hollywood stuntwoman, Savannah’s Marian Green knows how to take one for the team

Marian Green may be the toughest woman in Savannah.

She estimates she’s been hit by cars, sent flying over the hood and skidding to the pavement, at least eight times.

Maybe nine.

She’s survived explosions, high falls, point-blank gunshot wounds, bloody impalings and leaps from airplanes.

Green, 49, moved to Savannah five years ago with her husband, SCAD film professor Michael Hofstein. Here, she’s Marian Hofstein, helping out with class projects and doing volunteer work for the city’s film and music festivals.

In Hollywood, however, she’s got a gold-plated reputation as a stuntwoman who (almost) never gets hurt.

“They’re impressed with somebody who can hit the ground hard and get up,” she says. “And I was blessed with very hard bones.”

A California native, Green’s infatuation with movies began during her college years – she’d intended, ironically, to become a physical therapist. It was the Burt Reynolds B-actioner Hooper that got her thinking about stuntwomen; it looked like fun work, a lot better than doing 40 deep-tissue rubs every day in some depressing hospital.

A natural athlete who enjoyed swimming, running, soccer and basketball, she took a 10-week course at “stunt school,” where she made the acquaintance of friends – and contacts – she’d keep for many years.

Her big break arrived, literally, by accident. Working as an extra on the 1981 cheese-fest Return of the Rebels (starring Barbara Eden and a young Patrick Swayze), she was part of a crowd running from a motorcycle hoodlum.

“This guy was doing a wheelie, and I accidentally got too close and I got clipped,” Green recalls. “I flew about 15 feet – the motorcycle was going about 40, and I actually had the tread marks on my back. They got it on film, and

they used it, so I was able to get my SAG card.”

Joining the Screen Actors Guild meant Green was “in”; she then became a part of the stunt union, the United Stuntwoman’s Association.

That opened the floodgates. Wordof-mouth, she says, plays a large part in getting gigs, and after she’d appeared in The Babysitter, a TV-movie in which she’d doubled for Stephanie Zimbalist, Green heard the producer had a new series in the works, Cagney & Lacey.

“This is how naïve I was,” she laughs.

“I called him and asked him if I could be the double for Tyne Daly. And he said ‘Well, I don’t see why not.’

“Knowing what I know now, I would never do that: ‘Can I have that job?’ But I didn’t know any better.”

She trained in judo, gymnastics, motorcycle racing, skydiving and hanggliding. And the shows got better.

“As a stuntwoman, there are basically two jobs,” Green explains. “You can be a stunt double for an actress, or it can be an ‘ND’ stunt – ‘non-descript’ – that’s when I’m playing myself.

“I played myself, you could say, in the original Terminator. In the Club Noir scene, I’m ND; I’m just somebody in the club. Arnold Schwarzenegger is about to shoot Linda Hamilton, I take the bullet, and I die on top of her.”

Green tried acting a couple of times, even spoke a line or two on camera, but she’d rather act with her body.

“I felt that acting was actually for people who studied acting,” she says. “I feel like you could focus on stunts, or you could focus on acting, but to be really good at both? I just didn’t have the acting thing in me.”

So far, she’s taken one (or a thousand) for the team in well over 100 films and television series. Her horror movies include Candyman, Pumpkinhead, Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare and The People Under the Stairs. You can see her roughed up and/or snuffed in Reservoir Dogs, Basic Instinct, The Rocketeer, Blown Away, The Net, Broken Arrow, Escape From L.A., Pearl Harbor, The Replacement Killers and dozens more.

For Green, one of the most memorable stunts was rigged for director Tim Burton’s Batman Returns. Danny DeVito, as the Penguin, rises unexpectedly through an exploding glass floor.

There are 14 people – including Marian Green, as a non-descript – standing on the glass at the time.

The stunt people were attached to wires that would “blow” them up and away from the exploding floor.

“It had never been done before – and if the machines didn’t fire, and our cables didn’t go, we were all going to be shrapnelled to death,” she says. “Because that glass floor was going to go. It was one take. The stunt guys that rigged that were remarkable.”

Getting hit by cars, she says, has become her specialty. (She takes a particularly nasty spill, slamming solidly on the pavement, in a 1989 TV-movie called Full Exposure: The Sex Tape Scandal).

“You do one, they see it, people talk about it. Getting hit by cars has a high degree of danger involved. There’s a very good chance you’ll end up in the hospital,” she says.

Mental preparation, Green says, is essential. “My adrenaline’s pumping, the heart’s racing, and when they say ‘Action’ everything slows down for me. I just focus on this car, and as it’s coming towards me, I literally think to myself ‘Attack the car! Attack, attack!’ That way

I don’t think of myself as a victim. I dive at it, and it’s over in two seconds.”

(The cars, by the way, are rarely going more than 15 mph during a shoot.)

“But you also have to recognize that stunt people are just a piece of meat,” Green says. “If something happens to me, and they have to re-shoot, they’ll bring somebody else in.”

She met Hofstein on the set of TV’s The Fall Guy – he was running the camera, she was doubling one of the lead actresses. Hofstein went on to work on Rush Hour (the funny one), Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Lethal Weapon and others.

Today, their daughter Sara is 19 and a sophomore at Barnard College in N.Y. Green’s stunt career has slowed in recent years, although she recently flew to Los Angeles to work on an episode of The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

“I had been told for a long time that once you hit 40 as a stuntwoman, there’s kind of this ‘no work zone’ for the next 10 years,” she says. “Sure enough, I worked a little bit at 41, 42, and by the time we got ready to move here I hardly worked at all. After that, why bother?”

Now that she’s nearing 50, she explains, “the phone starts ringing again.

There’s work for older stuntwomen who can still hit the ground.” She’s thinking about dyeing her hair gray.

Even more encouraging is the prospect of more film and TV coming to Georgia, thanks to Governor Perdue’s recent offer of increased tax incentives for production companies.

For a 2008 TV pilot called Drop Dead Diva, Green drove to Atlanta. Should the crews come directly to her, in Savannah, she’ll be thrilled.

Australia

During my entire career as a film reviewer, I’ve never walked out of a movie and never will, though of course I’ve been tempted on countless occasions.

Given the promise of the love story-cumhistorical epic-cum-adventure yarn Australia, I rather unexpectedly felt an urge to hoof it to my car during the torturous opening scenes of this big-budget spectacle. Director Baz Luhrmann’s frenzied approach, which worked perfectly for the musical genre in Moulin Rouge! and for teen angst in Romeo & Juliet, is grotesquely out of place in these expository se quences (Luhrmann is talented, but he’s no Howard Hawks), while Nicole Kidman, as the prim and trim Englishwoman newly arrived to this savage land, manages (for the first 20 minutes, at least) to turn in the worst performance of her career. After this migraineinducing opening, the movie settles down (well, sort of) and begins to find its stride.

Unfortunately, that stride is only occasionally graceful, resulting in a mishmash of a film marked by infuriating ups and downs.As Sarah Ashley, who journeys to Australia and ends up trying to protect her late husband’s cattle ranch from being taken over by rival businessman King Carney (a welcome Bryan Brown, little seen since his brief heyday during the 1980s), Kidman never fully immerses herself in the role -- too many actorly tics spoil the broth. As Drover, the hunky cattle driver who agrees to help Sarah in her quest to save the

business, Hugh Jackman fares better, choosing to play most emotions close to the vest -- make that close to the bare chest -- and thereby emerging as an oasis of calm amidst so much rampant scenery-chewing. The worst culprit of overacting is David Wenham, whose dastardly henchman Fletcher ends up being perhaps the most risible movie villain since Billy Zane’s Cal Hockley took shots at Leonardo DiCaprio’s Jack Dawson as the Titanic sank into the chilly depths.In between scenes of Nicole and Hugh gettin’ sweaty and sequences involving the Japanese advancement during World War II, Australia touches upon the country’s horrific treatment of its half-caste children (produced when whites seduced -- or raped -- Aboriginal women), although with so much territory to cover -- both literally and figuratively -- the movie doesn’t provide much more than a surface look (see 2002’s Rabbit-Proof Fence for a more thorough examination). What it does provide, in those moments when Luhrmann isn’t allowing the material to spin out of control, is the sort of old-fashioned yarn Hollywood used to produce on a regular basis, with sweeping vistas providing backdrops for couples clinched in love. But for a primer on Australia, you’d do just as well renting Crocodile Dundee.

The purpose of theatrical trailers, as I (and the rest of the universe) understand it, is to showcase many of the film’s best scenes in an effort to get folks to crowd the box office during opening week and beyond. The trailer for Four Christmases fails this test, as it focuses almost exclusively on barf gags, pratfalls and other broad, physical comedy sure to draw the yahoo crowd but not necessarily anyone else. A more representative trailer, on the other hand, would have revealed a movie that’s actually worth seeing -- a smart, tart and even sexy (love that opening gag) confection whose observations about family dysfunction will make audience members squirm in their seats even as the laughs pour off the screen.

Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon headline as Brad and Kate, a deeplyin-love couple who always bypass their families at Christmastime in order to take overseas vacations. But complications force the pair to visit their relatives after all, and since both sets of parents (Robert Duvall and Sissy Spacek are

his, Jon Voight and Mary Steenburgen are hers) are divorced, that means four familial gatherings in one day. It proves to be a grueling endurance test for both of them, as each is humiliated in turn by parents, siblings and other assorted in-laws.

Bolt In recent years, Disney plus Pixar has led to some terrific animated features, but Disney minus Pixar has led to yearnings to locate the nearest auditorium exit. Bolt is straight-up Disney, which would be worrisome if it wasn’t for the fact that Pixar guru John Lasseter has been handed the keys to the studio’s entire animation department. So while Bolt isn’t a Pixar production, it falls under the auspices of Lasseter (billed on this title as executive producer), and that might possibly be the reason this fast-paced confection is far better than such studio sourballs as Chicken Little and Treasure Planet.

But make no mistake: This is still a long way from the giddy heights of the Pixar pack. It mixes the speed of a

Nickelodeon toon project with narrative elements from The Incredible Journey, as Bolt (voiced by John Travolta), a canine who believes he really possesses the superpowers he employs on his hit TV series, gets separated from his owner/co-star Penny (Miley Cyrus) and ends up crossing the country in search of her. It’s entertaining while it lasts but dissipates from memory the moment it’s over, a condition predicated on the fact that neither the noble, stiff Bolt nor the typical toon preteen Penny are especially dynamic characters. There are some clever inside-Hollywood touches, but the lack of any real dramatic tension means that the scripters are ultimately forced to turn to a burning building to serve as the “villain” of the piece. Still, the visual design is inventive (the film is screening in 3D at select theaters), and kids and adults alike are sure to love the character of Rhino (Mark Walton), a portly hamster always on the go in his plastic ball. Whenever he’s on screen, you can be sure he keeps the movie rolling.

Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa Anyone who thinks that the Madagascar franchise is all about the Benjamin (Stiller, that is) has seriously overrated the importance of marquee names to animated flicks.

With rare exception (say, Eddie Murphy in the Shrek works), the most memorable cartoon characters have nothing to do with A-list casting (who even remembers that Bruce Willis starred in

Over the Hedge?) and everything to do with matching the tone with the toon (I ask you, what superstar could have done better than relatively unknown Patton Oswalt as Ratatouille’s Remy?). So while the cast of Madagascar and its new sequel, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, is headed by Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer and Jada Pinkett Smith, it’s really all about the penguins, baby. Certainly, Stiller (as Alex the lion), Schwimmer (Melman the giraffe), Pinkett Smith (Gloria the hippo) and especially Rock (Marty the zebra) do their part to make these movies two of the few tolerable non-Pixar/non-Miyazaki toon tales of recent times, but what truly blesses the pair is the presence of the flightless fowl. Led by Skipper (voiced by Tom McGrath, co-director of both films), these penguins are among the least sentimental of all animated characters in the history of the film medium. Their cynicism shines through at every turn: After they run over a pesky human with a jeep, one asks, “Is she dead?” When informed that she’s not, he then tries to run over her again. Somehow, I don’t see Mickey or Porky taking this course of action. If this follow-up isn’t as good as its predecessor, that’s largely because the warmed-over central storyline -- so similar to The Lion King that there’s even a Scar stand-in -- has to compete with various other plot threads so diffuse that no real narrative momentum is ever established; there’s a rushed sense that wasn’t present in the first picture.

But whenever the penguins pop up for their welcome routine, the movie takes flight.

The Los Angeles Police Department, mired at the time in corruption, spots an opportunity to do something right and eventually reunites the mother with her boy. The only problem is that they bring back the wrong child, but rather than risk further embarrassment for the department, a zealous captain (Jeffrey Donovan) decides to drown out Christine’s protests by any means necessary, including labeling her as an unfit mother. Eastwood’s stately picture slowly extends its reach, as various other plot elements circle the central story of a parent’s unbreakable bond with her offspring; while some suffer in the mix (John Malkovich, as a crusading reverend fighting for Christine’s rights, could have benefited from more scenes), the overall result is a movie that will disappoint only those who require tidy endings wrapped up in pretty bows.

Casino Royale, the 2006 revamp of the hallowed 007 film franchise, turned out to be the best Bond outing since Reagan’s first term in office, so expecting Quantum of Solace to surpass it was probably asking too much. Fortunately, it isn’t long before we’re again immersed in the Bond mystique. Half gentleman, half bruiser, Daniel Craig’s Bond is still learning the ropes of his new status as a field operative, and it’s up to his superior, M (again played by Judi Dench with the right mix of exasperation at the monster she helped create and barely concealed pride at the confident, competent male she’s released to the world), to try -- usually with little success -- to keep him in line. In a first for the 46year-old series, Quantum of Solace isn’t loosely connected to past pictures but is instead a direct sequel to its predecessor: To watch it without having seen Casino Royale would be akin to viewing The Empire Strikes Back without having seen Star Wars. The villainous organization in the previous picture is still full speed ahead, and revenge for the death of a loved one remains foremost on the mind of our hero. M is worried that this will cloud Bond’s judgment, but 007 is nothing if not effective at multitasking. And does he have his hands full, whether tangling with the dastardly Dominic Greene (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly’s Mathieu Amalric), forming a partnership with the lovely Camille (Olga Kurylenko, certainly a letdown after Eva Green’s brainy, biting Vesper Lynd from Casino

Royale), or seeking help from coolly distant allies Felix Leiter and Mathis (returning co-stars Jeffrey Wright and Giancarlo Giannini). While the CIA has offered Bond a helping hand on several occasions in past pictures, the outfit here is hellbent on stopping him, since American interests are better served by sucking up to a corrupt billionaire promising to line pockets rather than aiding a conscientious British agent who can offer no such shady dealings.

But don’t think for a moment that real-world issues dominate the movie.

The stunts are as outlandish as ever, and the typically lavish settings allow us to live vicariously through Agent 007 (in a Bond film, it’s always a toss-up as to whether the women or the locales are more seductive). Continually getting better as it charges along, Quantum of Solace turns out to be a successful second entry in the Craig/007 canon. If I rated with numbers instead of stars, it would merit -- dare I type it? -- a 007 out of 10.
