Short take I really hate it when publications try to put one over on their readers. So I’m going to be totally up front with you.

Did you notice that the paper is a little smaller this week? Like, physically smaller? It’s an inch shorter, to be exact.

That’s because like many other media companies these days, our owners, Morris Multimedia, have decided to go with a smaller paper size pretty much company-wide.

Why? For the same reason you make many of your daily household decisions: Economics.

A shorter paper — even just an inch shorter — cuts down on enormously on the amount of paper used, and hence on the amount of money

So do I like the shorter paper? Of course not!

Naturally, I’d prefer it to remain the way it was — just as I’d prefer gas to be $1.50 a gallon like it was not so long ago. (Though any trend that decreases the number of trees cut down has at least that bright side going for it.)

Council approves ‘single stream’ recycling, reaffirms derelict property proposal by linda sickler | linda@connectsavannah.com

A curbside recycling program is coming to Savannah -- perhaps as soon as the first part of 2009.

The Savannah City Council has approved a 10-year contract with Pratt Recycling of Conyers. The city will operate a single-stream collection program and deliver all recyclables to Pratt - meaning homeowners won’t have to sort items themselves .

However, the council declined the opportunity to sign a 20-year contract that had the potential to be more profitable. City Manager Michael Brown said he had been asked to modify the agreement so the city wouldn’t be required to enter into a 20-year contract.

Randy Hartmann, Environmental Director for the Georgia Department of Community Affairs, advised the city to enter into a 20-year contract with Pratt.

“This is important not only for the economy but also from a conservation standpoint,” he said. “Using recycled material is less energy intensive. The energy provided by

one aluminum can can operate a lap top for three hours.”

Of the $2 million in DCA grant funding for the establishment of recycling programs, Savannah received $955,000.

Aldermen Larry Stuber and Mary Ellen Sprague voted for a 20-year contract with Pratt, citing economic gains that would be realized. “I think it’s time for us to show leadership,” Stuber said.

However, other council members disagreed, and the 10-year contract carried. “We’re not going to have a mandatory recycling program, which says to me these high expectations may not be enough,” said Alderman Mary Osborne.

“As an attorney, there’s no way I’m going to vote to approve a 20-year contract not one person up here has read,” Alderman Jeff Felser said.

“We need to consider the city councils of 2012 and 2016, 2020, 2024 and 2028,” Alderman Van Johnson said. “Will they go back and say the decision we made

Despite the disagreement, city officials are pleased the contract is in place. “Some have criticized us for not being the first to jump in (to a recycling program),” Brown said. “But jumping in at this point, with state, regional and other partners, will move us, if not to the forefront, up among those with the best recycling practices.”

Hartmann said the singlestream system is much easier for residents. “Five years ago, we did require that residents set out different containers for newspaper, glass, and so on,” he said. “That was very burdensome for residents. Today, we realize the need to get the recyclables together and collect it in a single stream.”

Customers will have two bins for refuse — one for garbage, such as food waste, Styrofoam and other non-recyclables; the other for recyclable such as paper, glass, plastic bottles and jars, aluminum and tin. Because all recyclable material goes into the same cart, it is called “single-stream recycling.”

City sanitation trucks will continue to collect household and yard waste. The recyclables will be collected every other week by separate trucks.

All household waste will be buried in the Dean Forest Road Landfill. Yard waste will be put through a giant chipper at the landfill and turned into mulch.

The recyclables will first go to the Pratt Recycling transfer sta-

tion. This will be located off U.S. 17 in the Kahn Industrial Park, near the old Sam’s Club.

In other business: The first reading of a strict derelict rental property ordinance was conducted by the Savannah City Council July 31. It will be brought back for approval at the Aug. 14 meeting.

City Manager Michael Brown is ready to move against landlords who rent derelict rental properties.

“We have certain individuals causing blight in our community and our community doesn’t deserve it,” he said.

“When you look at the fact we had 5,000 to 6,000 property maintenance violations last year, that really raises a flag,” Alderman Tony Thomas said. “I can drive down any street in my area and tell you what houses are rented, which have long-term residents in them, what houses have potential criminal activity. It’s amazing to me that with all the power the mayor and council has, we can drive through a neighborhood and not be able to do anything about it.”

Thomas said the ordinance will be “the greatest piece of legislation” the council will pass.

“My opinion is that 90 percent of blight can be eliminated by picking up trash and filling trash bags, moving junk cars and mowing,” Brown said. “This ordinance will not put undue hardship on the landlord, it will not put undue hardship on the tenants.”

“The shark was a pleasant surprise after those stupid jellyfish!” Nash McIntosh tells me.

The 70-year-old Savannah native — who you’ve probably seen at one point or another downtown wearing one of his Indiana Jones hats — recently decided it was about time he made that swim from Tybee Island to Hilton Head Island.

Without fins, of course, because only a “wuss” would wear fins. And without goggles for that matter, although this was certainly not a part of the plan. He isn’t that crazy.

But Nash is more than just a local character. A true man of the water, the coastal rivers are like his city streets.

He discovered his love for swimming as a child while growing up on Isle of Hope, later finding his home away from home swimming for the Tar Heels at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and then for the U.S. Navy in Pensacola, Florida. And if you wake up early enough, you may catch him swimming his daily workout on Tybee Island.

In short, swimming is in McIntosh’s blood. So when you ask a question such as, “Why would you swim from Tybee

to Hilton Head?” Nash simply replies, “Why not?”

Five nautical miles in five hours and five minutes. Not that anyone was counting.

The night prior to the swim, McIntosh docked his boat, the Po’ Cracker, at the Lazaretto Creek Marina on Tybee Island. It would be the safety vessel of moral support and Scooby Snacks the next morning, driven by his friends and motivators Charles Ellis and Jack Jones III while sporting a ten-foot fishing pole with a scuba/swimming flag attached and a cooler full of water, PowerAde, and chocolate cookies.

As per McIntosh’s request, Jones and Ellis would strongly enforce the “no touching the boat” rule.

Now, McIntosh doesn’t just jump in the water and swim for his life. Well, maybe he has come close to doing that on his three previous attempts over the past five years.

But this time he got smart and did his homework. How could he work with the converging currents of Lazaretto Creek, the Savannah River, and Calibogue Sound? Which current should he choose as an ally, and which to battle?

The action goes down at the Garden City Recreation Center-Gym, and on-site registration is available, if you need extra time to get your courage up.

In the meantime, Connect caught up with Maya Rulz to talk about the roller derby.

How did you become a Savannah Derby Devil?

Maya Rulz: A friend of mine started with the league. She and I used to roller blade together. She said I should join, so I came in as a ref. She said, “You don’t have to hit people if you’re a referee, and there’s not as strong a time commitment.” I said, “I’ll give that a shot.” I lasted about a month as a ref.

What convinced you to become a fullfledged Derby Devil?

Maya Rulz: Probably the intensity of the workout. My friend said, “You haven’t lived until you’ve done leg lifts with nine tons of skates on your feet.”

You can’t get enough of it! Also, at the time when I first started with the league, I thought hitting and blocking were random punches, but it’s not. There are a lot of rules about what’s legal and not legal. It’s a lot more technically oriented, and I enjoyed that part.

Mostly, it’s the intensity of the workout and the camaraderie, as well. We’re a really close team. You don’t see many team sports for women once you’re out of college.

But why the roller derby?

Maya Rulz: I’m awful at tennis. I ran, but I don’t like running by myself. I was awful at softball. I’m athletic, but a lot of the girls don’t start out that way. A lot of the strongest skaters in the league didn’t know how to skate when they started.

A lot have joined and lost 40 pounds.

It’s not like being on a machine at the gym. You want be a better athlete, and in the process of that, more pounds are shed and you become more muscular.

Then you go, “Oh, yeah, my butt looks good, too.”

What will happen at boot camp?

Maya Rulz: Boot camp is really designed to be more fun, a kind of introduction to roller derby. It’s for somebody who wants to try it for the heck of it, but has no plans to join the league.

It will start with a meet-and-greet, then we’ll start the workouts. We will be doing exercises, workouts on skates, techniques and skating lessons. It’s kind of small pieces of what we do. They will definitely be active and sore the next morning.

What is the typical Derby Devil like?

Maya Rulz: We’ve got a lot of professionals, including a journalist and a helicopter mechanic. There are students and moms. It really cuts across socioeconomic lines, cultural lines. We’re from lot of different backgrounds, and have ranged in age from 18 to 45. We also have all sizes of women.

Is it scary out there on the track?

Maya Rulz: Your first time, yes. My continues on p. 9

At 6 a.m., Nash submerges into the 80-degree water, what he calls the “perfect swimming temperature.” Wearing his goggles and a makeshift swim-cap to protect his head from the sun (a Wal-Mart baseball cap with the brim ripped off), he eases into the outgoing tide of Lazaretto Creek, giving himself adequate time to cross the Savannah River before the monstrous cargo ships begin their operations at 8 a.m.

Not five minutes into the swim, his goggles break and his hat is swept away with the tide. I would say this was a perfect opportunity to “wuss out” without really being too much of a “wuss.”

But he looks at me like I’m crazy when I ask if this crossed his mind. That’s Nash for you.

For the first hour and a half Nash boogies down Lazaretto Creek with the forces of the outgoing tide racing behind him. “Hauling down Lazaretto” is something he says he will never forget.

But with every positive comes the opposing negative, as he will also never forget his last two hours fighting the current of Calibogue Sound after crossing the Savannah River. Eyes red and burning, McIntosh has to catch his breath and bring his heart rate down by flipping on his back and paddling — a

swim stance that nearly convinces Ellis and Jones that McIntosh is waving the white flag of surrender.

But it doesn’t take long for the feisty man to set them straight, no matter how tired he may be.

“You’re going the wrong way!” they yell at one point.

“I can’t see!” he snaps back, eyes saturated with the saltwater. Understandable enough.

But even if he has goggles, there’s really only so much he wants to see. The murky water is a perfect vessel to deny the possibility of “what lies beneath.”

So besides the frequent startle of jellyfish slapping him in the face (the non-stinging types, luckily), McIntosh is more concerned about boaters than critters: The scuba flag is unfortunately not recognized enough.

I can only imagine what McIntosh feels like when his feet grazed the sands of Hilton Head. Shortly afterward he collapses on board the Po’ Cracker, too exhausted to even recognize the amazing feat he had just accomplished.

But now, even the humble Nash McIntosh admits that every once in while he’ll sit back and think, “I can’t believe I did that.”

What are people’s response to what you do?

Maya Rulz: When I first told my mother, she said, “I don’t have to tell everyone my daughter is a roller derby queen, do I?” Then, when she saw what I was doing, she started telling everyone her daughter was a roller derby queen!

Some people say, “Oh, you don’t look that tough.” We’re all just normal people who forget when we’re standing on skates we’re that much taller, so we look intimidating.

So everyone has to pick a roller derby name?

Papa’s brand new bag Getting through Sundays used to be a challenge for loyal patrons of Papa’s Bar-B-Que on Whitemarsh Island. In the 36 years since Frank Ouzts started his wood-fired barbecue restaurant, lunch or dinner from Papa’s has been a Monday-through-Saturday experience. Until this past weekend, folks had to white-knuckle it through a Sunday craving of Papa’s signature Bar-B-Que on 2 Buns (twin hand-sized sandwiches of smoked chopped pork with Papa’s tangy mustardy sauce.)

Seven-day-a-week service is one of a small number of changes that Frank and his wife/business partner, Judy Ouzts, have implemented at their restaurant in the past ten days, but those few changes are real attention-getters.

For one thing, Papa’s has moved. For another, they’ve almost quadrupled in size.

After 18 years in their most well known location (the cozy, sometimes

cramped, 35-seat slot in a nondescript strip mall on Highway 80) the Outzs’s have relocated Papa’s across the street to a spacious, gleaming new building just west of the Whitemarsh Island Publix grocery store.

After years of occasional visits to the strip mall location, the carpeted expanse of the new dining room elicited several “wow’s� and a split-second of concern at the start of my Sunday night visit—will this version of Papa’s retain those elements that have kept me loyal

“We’re excited about this new little hamburger on two buns,� said Frank, describing the dual serving of three ounces of hand ground choice beef. “We tried all kinds of hamburgers before Jay Blackburn told me ‘you ought to do it on two buns, it’s your trademark.’ So far it’s been a big hit for us.�

Shrimp, tilapia and flounder platters, formerly specials on weekends only, are now permanent menu offerings.

That’s also the motivation behind the restaurant’s new name: Papa’s Bar-BQue & Seafood.

Another addition is the full bar at the western edge of the dining room. “We had beer and wine before, but people just about didn’t see it,� said Frank. “We had PBR before it was cool again.�

In a blink, two reassuring features abated any nudges of concern. First the menu, with all its familiar, unpretentious offerings—smoked chicken, baked beans, chicken tenders and banana pudding among my favorites.

Then there was Frank Ouzts himself, appearing from the back of the house.

At the old location, Frank and Judy were omnipresent fixtures, usually behind the counter that served as cashier area, take out line and refrigerator.

This past Sunday, Judy was out of sight, supervising the kitchen. Frank made the rounds on the floor, slipping into a booth to visit with customers in one corner, then vanishing to check on the status of an order.

He appeared at our table to catch us up on friends living out of town, and to ponder plans to hear The Sapphire Bullets of Pure Love at their monthly gig at Wild Wing, before pointing out a few additions to the menu.

Every dog has his day A Metro K-9 unit is credited with capturing a carjacker.

On July 31, a man carjacked a woman just before midnight on Victory and Truman.

The victim told police that the man approached her car at the stoplight, opened the passenger door, got in the car and told her to get out. A second man, who was armed with a gun, walked up to the car and also told the woman to get out of her car.

When the woman left the car, the two suspects, plus two other men who also jumped in the car, drove off and escaped.

About an hour later, a Central Precinct patrol officer spotted the vehicle at the Sunrise Villas Apartments.

Officer. Will Fernandez and K-9 Faust responded and initiated a track. Faust led police to an apartment where four men were standing outside. One of the men was identified by the victim and arrested.

• While on routine patrol on East 36th Street, an officer was flagged down by a man who said that one of his neighbors had come into his back yard and pushed his niece. The officer was still talking to the man when the suspect, who was holding a baseball bat, came walking from the rear of the man’s house.

The officer shined a flashlight at the suspect and told him to put the bat down, but the suspect kept walking towards the officer, still holding the bat. The officer then pointed a handgun at the suspect and told him again to put the bat down.

The suspect still didn’t put the bat down until the officer repeated the command five more times. Then the suspect began yelling and wouldn’t obey orders.

The officer told the suspect to sit on the ground, but he refused. After other officers arrived on the scene, the suspect was put under arrest.

He said he had come to the man’s house because the people there were talking about his mother. He also said the man was going to get his friends to fight him.

A box cutter was found in the suspect’s pocket when he was searched. He was charged with reckless conduct.

• Officers tried to stop the driver of a car, but he sped away. When the officers lost sight of the car, they broadcast an alert.

An officer at East 34th and Live Oak streets saw two men running, and began chasing them. One of the men ran west across Waters Avenue and then north on East 33rd Street.

The officer circled the block in an attempt to locate him, then saw him running south.

The man got into the passenger seat of car that was driven by a woman. The officers were able to stop her car, and while approaching, saw the suspect reach down toward the floorboard.

When he was taken out of the car, a plastic baggy containing suspected cocaine was found on the floorboard. The man was sweating profusely and had wet lawn clippings on his shoes, and a white power consistent with cocaine was seen on his right sock and on the top of his right shoe near the ankle.

The suspect was charged with possession of a controlled substance and taken

to the Chatham County Detention Center. The owner was released, and the cocaine was logged as evidence.

• A man called police and said he was having trouble with his girlfriend. He said she had recently gone to jail for contempt, after not appearing

in court.

The man said the woman was released the following day and began calling his phone. At first, she called and played obscene language from songs on his answering machine. Then she called and said, “I’m going to have somebody kill you.”

The victim said he hung up the phone after realizing it was her who was calling.

Police had previously received several reports about the couple. The two are supposed to appear at a court date. The man was given another case report card as he requested.

What’s the straight dope on the world’s first powered flight? Sources claim people from New Zealand, Scotland, and France flew earlier than the Wrights, and one claims John Stringfellow from England, managed a powered flight in 1848!

—Tony My Brazilian wife tells me the Wright brothers weren’t the first fliers, but that a Brazilian named Santos-Dumont beat them into the air. True?

—Kyle Hedlund, Sao Paulo Folks, I assume you’ve all tumbled to the truth about Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and the tooth fairy; I think you’re ready for the truth about inventors. They rarely cook up a new device or process from scratch; more often they merely add a few essential twists to an almost-there technology that’s waiting to be born. Just so with aircraft. Even discounting man-lifting kites, balloons, parachutes, gliders, and airships, lots of people beat the Wrights to powered heavier-than-air takeoffs.

What the Wrights invented was the first practical airplane—one capable of controlled, sustained flight.

First, Stringfellow. He recorded a successful indoor flight with a small steam-powered model propeller plane in 1848. So sure, Stringfellow achieved powered—but unmanned—flight.

The next major contender was Felix du Temple, whose manned powered plane launched from a ramp in 1874 and was airborne only briefly — less a sustained flight than a powered glide.

In 1890, Frenchman Clement Ader piloted the first manned plane to take off from level ground under its own power. But Ader loses points for his discredited claims of an 1897 flight.

Your Scottish entrant, Tony, was probably Preston Watson. His brother once claimed Preston had flown a powered plane in 1903 but later determined the craft in question was a glider. Not everyone got the memo.

New Zealander Richard Pearse made short semisuccessful flights in a gasoline-powered plane, probably in mid1903. If so, they were the first powered flights with reasonable controls.

Other notable manned but uncontrolled planes before the Wrights include those of Mozhaisky (1884, Russia), Hiram “Machine Gun” Maxim (1894, England), Wilhelm Kress (1901, Austria), Karl Jatho (1903, Germany), and Langley (1903, U.S.).

That leaves the flights of the Wright brothers in 1903, right? Actually, that plane, taking off from a rail under its own power and flying upwards of 260 meters, was fully controllable in theory only. The Wrights had tested their wingwarping system for executing banked turns on gliders but didn’t risk powered turns at this point.

In 1904, the Wrights tested a new plane in Ohio. Early flights disappointed, the fault of both Dayton’s undependable winds and oversensitive pitch controls. To combat the former, they built a starting derrick (read: a catapult) to pull them up to flying speed quickly.

To improve pitch control, they added ballast and modified the elevators.

Only after licking these problems did the Wrights attempt turns. By 1904 they were flying in circles, a convenient standard for controlled flight. They made flights up to five minutes long in 1904 and, in a third plane, up to 38 minutes long in 1905. It’s this third plane that many regard as the first airplane.

Alberto Santos-Dumont, a Brazilian expat in France, won the honor of the first FAI-certified flight with a poorly controlled 220-meter trip in 1906.

At the time Europeans doubted the Wrights’ claims, and Santos-Dumont contended he was first, period.

In everything but certification, though, the Wrights were well ahead of the pack. Their longest flights of 1903, ’04, and ’05 and their first circular flight weren’t matched for three to four years.

When Wilbur flew in Europe in 1908 without a catapult, he shattered all previous FAI records for distance, duration, and altitude.

In later patent disputes, the Wrights were prickly, which cost them friends.

They come off like money-grubbing SOBs—but SOBs who nonetheless invented the first practical airplane.

Brother Cesare Bonizzi, 62, of a Capuchin Friars monastery near Milan, Italy, is the lead singer in a heavy-metal band that recently released its second album, “Misteri” (“Mysteries”), following a successful performance at Italy’s “Gods of Metal” festival (headlined

by Iron Maiden and, ironically, Judas Priest). On stage, the white-flowingbearded Brother Cesare booms out gritty but non-proselytizing lyrics while wearing his traditional brown robe. He told BBC News in July that his superiors have never interfered with his sideline and that he plans to send a copy of the new album to the pope. “He’s a music lover, and metal is music.”

The largest breakup of Arctic ice in three years created two huge ice islands off far northern Canada in what researchers say is the latest evidence of a warming climate.

The chunks broke off the Ward Hunt Ice Shelf on the coast of Ellesmere Island in Canadaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Nunavut territory. One of the new islands of ice measures 1.9 square miles while the other is 5.4 square miles in size. Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten - Statts/ Williams Benefit Screening

This latest have-fun-while-youdo-a-good-deed event for Ardsley Park shooting victims Jason Statts and David J. Williams finds local cult film organization the Psychotronic Film Society (of which I’m a member) joining forces with longtime area music aficionado Larry Dane-Kellogg to present a one-time-only showing of acclaimed director Julien Temple’s (The Sex Pistols’ The Great Rock & Roll Swindle, Absolute Beginners) award-winning documentary on the charismatic frontman for legendary British punk band The Clash.

The movie features rare footage of Strummer and his bands, as well as candid interviews with close friends and fans like Johnny Depp, Bono, Steve Buscemi, John Cusack, Mick Jagger, Jim Jarmusch and others. It was called “the best music film ever made” by XFM Radio. Admission is free, but voluntary donations will be accepted, and a full 100% of proceeds go straight to the Statts/Williams Recovery Fund.

2008 Jazz Festival moves forward Free week-long event shows diversity and expansion

In the 21 years since local attorney Skip Jennings has been involved with the Coastal Jazz Association, he’s attended scores of phenomenal concerts by some of the world’s most respected jazz artists — most of them from the side of the stage.

As the Savannah Jazz Festival’s Master of Ceremonies since 1987, Jennings —an omnivorous music fan with a special love of jazz and blues— is, to many, the only constant presence at that eagerly awaited annual event. Whether thanking the festival’s many sponsors, introducing acts or prying applause from the crowd in hopes of an encore, Jennings is one of the festival’s loudest cheerleaders.

Yet, he’s also a realist, and one who will speak frankly and openly about the difficult challenges faced by CJA’s leadership, of which he is now once more a part.

So, when the first vice president himself of this long-standing non-profit organization is visibly enthused about the direction the week long Savannah Jazz Fest (Sept. 20-28) is currently headed in, it’s difficult not to find such enthusiasm contagious.

“We’re all excited about it,” he says.

“We have some new additions to our Board that have brought in a lot of fresh energy, and that can’t help but be a good thing.”

Those who have enjoyed the Jazz Fest in the past won’t need to worry about a complete makeover, though. Jennings says the CJA is firmly committed to improving and growing the free, public festival — but methodically, and with great care.

“It’s not our intent to radically change things in any one year,” he continues.

“Rather, we feel the festival should constantly evolve — like jazz itself.”

“A couple of years ago we were getting a lot of criticism in the local media. Not to be overly critical, but we had fallen into a very comfortable rut.

They were all great events with fantastic music, but they were becoming predictable in some respects. So, we’ve tried to change things up.”

it to feature contemporary and smooth jazz — and The Yellowjackets show was by far our biggest Friday night crowd ever.”

Jennings says that surprising turnout reassured the more purist CJA members who initially resisted adding that style of music into a festival that for decades has focused on traditional jazz forms.

“So many people showed up there could be no doubt it was something we should continue,” he explains.

And continue they have. This year’s Friday night headliner is none other than smooth jazz superstar Bob James and his Quintet. The Grammy winning fusion artist (who’s also a member of Fourplay) has maintained a home at The Landings for the past few years, and Jennings says the CJA is thrilled to have someone of his artistic stature and fame associated with Savannah.

“We wanted to book him in 2007, but he was touring Japan. We’d certainly love to have an artist of his caliber

become involved in the festival on an ongoing basis.”

Other major names at this year’s event include “Simone”, the celebrated vocalist daughter of the late, iconic singer Nina Simone, legendary Thelonious Monk drummer Ben Riley, and —on Blues Night— Chicago harmonica legend James Cotton, of whom Jennings brags, “How many people from Muddy Waters’ legendary 1950s band are actually left?”

Other events include a documentary film screening at the JEA, and a Southside concert at Savannah Country Day School’s auditorium.

“The idea”, Jennings says, “is to liven up the festival, and bring many more people into jazz at an increasing number of locations spread around town.”

The centerpiece of the exhibit is LeSar’s film The Self Conspiracy, a “post-apocalyptic psycho-Western” starring Jacob Andersen.

“This isn’t a film that you can just go to a theater and watch or just take the DVD home and pop it in,” LeSar says. “Every performance of it will different, will be vital, will be explosive.”

“We know,” says LeSar, “that the illusory lore of the American dream, that in this country you have the freedom to do whatever you want to do whenever you want to do it, is wrong. In life that’s wrong”.

“The search in man and the thirst in man is a thirst for knowledge. A search for

understanding, for identity in context with the world around him. It’s about searching to understand the meaning to all of this.”

LeSar elaborates on the film and its message: “This is a departure from anything I’ve ever done before,” he says. “The world that we present is about 2013, 2014. One of the new beginning, the post apocalypse world, the years after the world had been destroyed. It’s about psychosis. There’s a man stranded in a desert and he’s lost and has no direction to go. In a lot of ways that represents every human being, every person on this earth. Our hero begins to destroy himself by seeking what he knows is an illusion.”

The entire thesis show itself, premiering in Savannah is “designed to be an individual rock and roll show,” he says. “Or

the circus. It’s a celebration of the sideshow, the unique one time only, invitation only celebration. It’s an event like ‘Did you see?’ or ‘Were you there last night?’ or ‘Or are you the guy who missed it?’”

The Self Conspiracy is the film. The multimedia show is “Life is a Terminal Condition,” a contemporary art extravaganza and a glimpse into the disillusionment of the psyche of humanity.

“Is it all an illusion?” LeSar asks. “Do you lie to yourself and force yourself to believe that it’s out there?”

Pineapple Express It’s been a roller coaster year for Judd Apatow, who as producer seems to have had a hand in practically every 2008 comedy not starring Mike Myers or Eddie Murphy. The lamentable Drillbit Taylor was quickly followed by the bright Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and now the mediocre Step Brothers has moved aside for the rollicking Pineapple Express.

Pineapple Express doesn’t benefit from the polished characterizations or heartfelt scenarios of Apatow’s big hits The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up, but as far as crude, rambling, shaggy-dog comedies go, this one’s better than most of the modern-day crop. Here we have process server Dale Denton (Seth Rogen) and drug dealer Saul Silver (James Franco); they’re forced to take it on the lam after Dale witnesses a drug lord (Gary Cole) and a crooked cop (Rosie Perez) commit cold-blooded murder and the killers are able to trace the rare pot (“Pineapple Express”) that Dale leaves at the crime scene back to the eternally fried Saul. Pineapple Express boasts a pair of major surprises. The first is that instead of turning to a regular member of his troupe to

direct the picture, Apatow chose David Gordon Green, known for micro-budgeted indie films (All the Real Girls, George Washington). The second is that Franco, generally the blandest of pretty boys, succeeds in his change-of-pace role as a long-haired stoner who has trouble understanding the words that anyone speaks to him (when Dale tells him he’s a process server, Saul replies, “You’re a servant? Like a butler? You shine shoes?”). Not surprising in the least is that Rogen again scores in his role as a disheveled slacker with a way with words.

Swing Vote There’s a terrific segment in the middle of Swing Vote in which the two men running for U.S. president, the Republican incumbent Andrew Boone (Kelsey Grammer) and the Democratic challenger Donald Greenleaf (Dennis Hopper), are persuaded by their campaign managers (played by Stanley Tucci and Nathan Lane, respectively) to do anything to win the favor of Texico, N.M., resident Bud Johnson (Kevin Costner), whose single vote will decide the outcome of this election. So when Bud lets it be known that he doesn’t care what people do in the privacy of their own homes, even homosexuals, the right-wing Boone is forced to appear in an ad in which, surrounded by members of the gay community, he cheerfully embraces diversity. And when a comment by Bud is misunderstood to mean that he harbors ill will toward Mexican laborers, the left-wing Greenleaf reluctantly films a TV spot in which he rails against illegal immigrants, even as real immigrants hired as extras run across the set behind him.

These bits (as well as a couple of others) are funny, biting and provocative, and they demonstrate that Swing Vote had an opportunity to emerge as a scathing political satire (e.g. Warren Beatty’s excellent Bulworth) rather than a timid political comedy (e.g. Robin Williams’ execrable Man of the Year). Sadly, Swing Vote largely fails to capitalize. The central thrust of the movie isn’t the election as much as it’s the familial bonding between Bud and his daughter Molly (Madeline Carroll). That’s all good and sweet -- and Costner delivers a fine performance as a man whose love for his child eventually rejuvenates him -- but we see that type of sentimental film just about on a monthly basis. We’re here for the hard truths about American politics, but this movie shies away from them every chance it gets.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor

1999’s The Mummy was a barely passable Indiana Jones rip-off, while 2001’s The Mummy Returns proved to be rather dismal. This one, though, is the worst of the lot -- and certainly the most boring. Somehow, I managed to stay awake during the grueling expository sequences. I’m not referring to the prologue showing how, in the China of 2,000 years ago, a sorceress (Michelle Yeoh) places a curse on an evil emperor

(Jet Li) who can now only be awoken by a drop of human blood; I’m talking about the excruciating scenes in which retired adventurer Rick O’Connell (series star Brendan Fraser) and his wife Evelyn (Maria Bello, replacing Rachel Weisz after the latter declared, “Screw this; I have an Oscar now!”) mope around their English estate in 1946 while grown son Alex (Luke Ford) is (unknown to them) off digging up the emperor. Plot contrivances reunite all of them in Shanghai, and from there, the gang is forced to fight the now-revived emperor. Is that really Maria Bello looking so glum up there on the screen, doubtless recalling how her formidable talents are more suited to the likes of A History of Violence and The Cooler than to treacle like this? And do scripters Alfred Gough and Miles Millar think that audiences will be impressed by dialogue that basically consists of variations on Rick yelping, “Well, here I am fighting mummies again!”?

Step Brothers The battle for the title of Hollywood’s Ultimate Man-Child finds Will Ferrell finally overtaking Adam Sandler. The law of diminishing returns -- to say nothing of Step Brothers’ cringe-inducing trailer -- suggests that this should represent the nadir of Ferrell’s efforts, but the truth is that he’s done worse.

For the most part, this is crap, yet it’s rescued from the bottom of the sewer by several choice quips as well as a surprising sweetness at the center of its storyline involving family dysfunction.

Ferrell and Talladega Nights partner John C. Reilly star as Brennan and Dale, two 40-ish men still living at home with their single parents (Mary Steenburgen and Richard Jenkins, respectively).

When said parents decide to marry each other, the two “kids” are forced to not only live under the same roof but also share a bedroom. They become best friends after they’re united by their mutual hatred of Brennan’s smug, perfectionist brother Derek (Adam Scott).

As usual, Ferrell doesn’t know where to draw the line when it comes to childish antics on screen (the sleepwalking segments involving Brennan and Dale are especially exasperating), and the sight of Brennan dragging his exposed nutsack across Dale’s precious drum set serves as an example of the sophomoric levels to which this film will stoop. But the theme of how parents and children will often fail each other carries some startling resonance (thanks largely to

The X-Files: I Want to Believe Perhaps they should have called it X and the City. Given the phenomenal, $150 million haul of Sex and the City, the makers of The X-Files: I Want to Believe doubtless hope that their bigscreen adaptation of a wildly popular and long-canceled TV series will meet with a similar fate. Despite creator Chris Carter’s claims that the movie functions as a stand-alone feature and no knowledge of the program is required, that’s far from the truth. Former FBI agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson), now going through life as, respectively, a bearded recluse and a skilled physician, occasionally mention that they’re still haunted by memories of Mulder’s deceased sister and Scully’s deceased child, but as I couldn’t recall any details as to how the series wrapped up those plotlines, virginal viewers will have even less of a clue what the hell these people are yammering about. Where the film works is in establishing and sustaining the proper mood.

The Dark Knight Given the fact that 2005’s Batman Begins, writer-director Christopher Nolan’s successful attempt to reinvent the flagging Bat-franchise (all but dead

and buried after George Clooney and Arnold Schwarzenegger got through with it), ranks as one of the best superhero flicks ever made, then where does that put The Dark Knight, a sequel that manages to be even more phenomenal than its predecessor? Certainly, it places it somewhere at the head of the class, and there’s a nice symmetry to its release date: After all, it was 30 years ago that the Christopher Reeve version of Superman -- still the greatest of all comic book adaptations -- was released, and now we have its equal on the other side of the aisle, a superhero saga that’s as dark and deep as its forefather was cheery and colorful. Christian Bale, a talented thespian who makes humorlessness look less like a performer’s choice and more like an established school of acting, was a logical choice to play millionaire Bruce Wayne and his masked alter ego. The Dark Knight might be the first superhero movie that that tugs at our nerves in a way that both disturbs and delights us. In this outing, Batman and his ally in the police department, Lt. Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman, like many others a returning cast member), have done a fine job of tightening the reins around the mob bosses who have long controlled Gotham City. They’re aided in their efforts by a newcomer to the scene: Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart), an idealistic district attorney who’s already being championed as the one man who can save the city from its criminal elements.

Batman/Bruce Wayne initially has his doubts -- and his jealousies, as Dent’s dating his longtime love Rachel Dawes (Maggie Gyllenhaal, thankfully replacing Batman Begins’ Katie Holmes in the role) -- but he soon realizes that the d.a.’s intentions are indeed noble and on the level. But their combined attempts to corral the city’s crooks are hampered

by the presence of The Joker (Heath Ledger), a psychopath who, unlike most criminals, isn’t interested in the payoff as much as he’s interested in the pursuit of the payoff. The Joker’s lack of a master scheme is what makes him an especially potent villain; Bruce’s faithful butler Alfred (Michael Caine) sums up the mindset of such men by declaring how some people commit evil just because they “want to watch the world burn.” Technically, the film is as bleakly beautiful as one might expect, thanks largely to the camerawork by Wally Pfister (who earned a Best Cinematography Oscar nomination for his efforts on Batman Begins). Except for a rolling, exploding helicopter that looks as it was programmed onto the screen by a computer, the visual effects are likewise excellent. As for the cast, Eckhart stands out in what proves to be the picture’s most fully realized characterization.

Still, we all know who’s the MVP. Even if he hadn’t died this past January, Ledger would have been the talk of the town for his turn as The Joker. Deprived of a back story (though he invents a couple for the “amusement” of potential victims) and thus denied any possibility for even an ounce of audience sympathy, this lunatic is a whirling dervish of cackling, lip-smacking, cheek-sucking sin. When -- make that if -- we laugh at the manner in which he, say, slicks back his hair as he prepares to tangle with Rachel or performs a magic trick by making a pencil disappear (in gruesome fashion), we’re not laughing at him or even with him. Instead, it’s a laugh of sweaty unease, an involuntary chuckle

designed to convince the character that we’re as cracked as he is, lest he leap from the screen in disapproval and practice his chaos theory on us.

Mamma Mia!

29 Meryl Streep fans and ABBA fans can at least count on those two components firing on all cylinders in this adaptation of the Broadway smash. Everyone else, though, may be forced to rummage through the debris that constitutes the rest of the picture to find anything worth salvaging. Anybody who saw Streep’s terrific, Oscar-nominated performance in 1990’s Postcards from the Edge knows she can belt out a tune (she also tackled some songs in A Prairie Home Companion), and here she’s aptly cast as Donna, a former singer raising her daughter Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) at her hotel on a lovely Greek island.

Sophie’s about to get married to hunky Sky (dull Dominic Cooper), but first she’s determined to learn the identity of her father. After sneaking a peek at her mom’s old diary, Sophie invites to her wedding the three men who all had relations with her mom two decades earlier, hoping to ascertain which one is daddy dearest. The three are suave Sam (Pierce Brosnan), uptight Harry (Colin Firth) and rascally Bill (Stellan Skarsgard), and as long as the actors stick to walking and talking, they’re fun to watch. But whenever one of them is called upon to sing, be prepared to duck and cover as their aural ineptitude bombards our eardrums.

Steenburgen’s delicate performance), and every time we write off the dialogue as just a string of schoolyard taunts, along comes an unexpected zinger. Step Brothers is clearly a step up from this past spring’s Ferrell offering, Semi-Pro (and, for my money, Blades of Glory as well), but please, guys, it’s time to grow up and give this formula a rest.
