A

mericans have gotten way too big for their britches, and that’s just as true in Chatham County.

Ask the paramedics at the Southside Fire Department. “We have far more patients who exceed 400 pounds than we used to,” says EMS Director/Assistant Chief Tim Genest. “That used to be a very rare exception.”

Recently, Southside Fire/EMS began operating a bariatric ambulance that can accommodate patients weighing up to 1,000 pounds.

“In the space of three weeks, we had to use the ambulance almost 20 times,” Genest says.

Only one other department in the region has a bariatric ambulance, and it’s in Atlanta.

The custom-built ambulance operates with a cot that has more than twice the load limit of a regular cot. Two ramps attach to the rear of the ambulance and an electric winch pulls the cot up the ramps and into the ambulance.

In the past, EMTs had to load the cots the hard way. Extra ambulances were called to the scene so their crews could help out.

“We had to get creative,” Genest says.

“We had as many as 11 people with their hands on the stretcher at once.”

At times, the patient wasn’t be the only one needing a doctor. “We had injuries, especially back injuries,” Genest says. “When you get that many people, it’s hard to coordinate.”

The bariatric ambulance was designed and built by Peach State Ambulance Builders in Tyrone, Ga., according to specifications determined by Southside EMS. “When we first got the ambulance, we had to send it back,” Genest says. “It wasn’t practical.”

The manufacturer sent an engineer to work on site with the department to correct the deficiencies. “We’ve got a good working relationship with them,” Genest says. “It took about six months to build, when it normally takes 90 days.”

The ambulance is used to take larger patients to the hospital or to bring them home after they’re discharged. It also takes them to doctor’s appointments.

“I’ve had two patients tell me they avoided getting health care before we got the ambulance,” Genest says. “They were embarrassed and some of them just couldn’t get there any other way.”

EMT/Firefighter Brad Bates is enthusiastic about the new ambulance. “It gives us more room to work on a larger patient,” he says. “It saves wear and tear on an EMT. Once we get them on the stretcher, there is no lifting.”

EMT/Firefighter Jonathan McCrary said as many as two to three extra ambulances had to be called in the past to help carry larger patients. “This has saved our backs,” he says.

All in all, the ambulance is a welcome addition. “It takes a little more setting up, but it’s sure a lot less effort overall,” Genest says.

The obesity epidemic

Obesity is becoming such a major health problem some call it an epidemic. According to the Centers for Disease Control, obesity was at 15 percent of the population from 1976 through 1980.

Another survey conducted in 2003 and 2004 has revealed that figure has more than doubled -- 32.9 percent of the population is now obese.

These figures are troubling because obesity leads to debilitating, even deadly ailments, including high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, Type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, certain types of cancers and depression.

Losing as little as 10 percent of your body weight can make a dramatic improvement in overall health.

Dr. John Angstadt heads the Memorial Health bariatric department. “As disturbing as the trend is, it’s probably underestimated,” he says.

It’s not just ambulances that are getting bigger, Angstadt said. Most medical equipment -- from blood pressure cuffs to CT scanners -- are made bigger now to accommodate larger patients.

What is causing the increase in obesity?

It’s not just what we eat, it’s how we eat it.

“There is a widespread availability of fast food,” Angstadt says. “Combine that with a society that doesn’t stop for lunch, sometimes dinner, and you’ve got a problem.”

Even our language has changed, Angstadt points out. “It isn’t ‘Meet me for lunch,’ it’s ‘Let’s grab a bite,’” he says. “Fast food is more convenient.”

The portions are more generous than they used to be, too. “When I was a kid and we’d go to McDonald’s, I’d get a 6-ounce Coke, a tiny bag of French fires and a ham-

burger that’s half the size of the ones you get now,” Angstadt says.

People aren’t burning up those extra calories. “Exercise has become a luxury,” Angstadt says. “There’s no time to fit exercise into the day.”

Just 100 extra calories a day will cause a person to gain 10 pounds a year, Angstadt says. “In 10 years, that’s 100 pounds,” he says.

“Most people say they don’t eat that much. As we get older, our muscle mass drops. We don’t need as many calories and our metabolic rate changes. Most people gain weight as they get older.”

Most obesity tends to go back to a young age, Angstadt says. Perhaps the most disturbing trend of all is that many more children today are overweight than in the past.

“When you are obese as a child, it’s much more difficult to turn around,” Angstadt says.

In the past, children played outdoors much more than they do today. “There are computer games, a whole world on the Internet,” Angstadt says. “You can spend your life alone and never take a walk outside.”

Most obese children, and adults for that matter, have poor eating habits. But starving yourself to lose weight will have the opposite effect you want.

“The body has a good starvation preservation mechanism,” Angstadt says. “If you haven’t eaten in 12 hours, your body metabolism drops 40 percent. It’s not only what you eat, but how active you are every day.

Never go eight hours without eating.”

Before having bariatric surgery, patients must attend classes in nutrition and exercise physiology, plus two support group sessions. They also must have a psychological evaluation. “Patients will come back saying they didn’t want go to through counseling, but it was the smartest thing they ever did,” Angstadt says.

As a bariatric surgeon, Angstadt performs both gastric bypass and lap band surgeries. The gastric bypass is an extensive surgery, while the lap band is simpler and requires less recovery time, but patients who have bypass surgery lose weight faster.

Patients must commit to a healthier lifestyle, even after surgery, Angstadt says. “We give them the tools, but they have to do the work,” he says. “They must combine diet with exercise.”

On Aug. 25, Angstadt and his patients will gather for an annual gala. “Everyone gets dressed up,” he says. “It’s a celebration of what everyone has done in the past year, a celebration of success.”

Gastric bypass: A case study

Betsy Tallent, one of Angstadt’s patients, once weighed 294 pounds. “I had lost sight of who I was behind all the fat,” she says.

“I was always saying I was comfortable with who I was, but I was short of breath, and my lower back and knees had started to hurt. I was in my early 30s still,” she says. “I didn’t want to do extracurricular things with

| Lead Story by Linda Sickler ach and creating a small, thumb-sized pouch at the top of it, and bypassing a length of the small intestine. This results in a reduction in the amount of food eaten and the amount of calories and nutrients absorbed.

Today at age 35, Tallent weighs 171 pounds, 123 pounds less than she did at the time of her surgery. “I lost a person,” she says. “Besides getting to wear cute clothes, I’ve found I have more self confidence than I’ve had in a long time.”

Tallent also has lots more energy. In addition to work and family activities, she volunteers at her church. “I’ve never been this thin,” she says.

Before her surgery, Tallent never noticed that people treated her differently, but after she lost weight, she started noticing that people were more likely to strike up a conversation with her. Men were more likely to hold the door open for her.

However, she realizes the difference may not lie with others, but within herself. “It could be the way I present myself now,” she says. “I may be more willing to strike up a conversation now.”

Tallent decided to have bariatric surgery after attending a seminar at work. Dr. Greco had an influx of patients who had lost massive amounts of weight after undergoing a gastric bypass, and that inspired her to seek help.

ric patients. “At the time, my baby was 14 months,” she says. “I said I didn’t want to be as immobile in the future as I was then.”

Tallent was the third patient to undergo the surgery three years ago when Memorial Health opened its bariatric department. She went through the required rounds of classes, tests and evaluations to prepare for it.

Overall, Tallent did well and recovered quickly. It took her about a year to lose all the weight.

“I won’t tell you it was a bed of roses,” she says. “Emotionally and mentally, I went through a lot. Physically, I was weak. For the first time in my life, I had food taken away from me.”

Just having surgery isn’t enough. A patient must commit to life-long lifestyle changes.

“I don’t think about food the way I used to,” Tallent says. “Exercise has become a part of my life. If I go out to eat, I east less than half of what I order. I always have leftovers. I’ve been able to enjoy food as much or more as I did before, although I’ve found that I don’t enjoy some things the way I did.”

Meals sometimes include dessert. “I eat a few bites, enough so that I feel I’ve had something sweet,” Tallent says.

After she lost the weight, Tallent faced more surgery to remove the excess skin from her body. “I had an around-the-world tummy tuck and breast augmentation with a lift,” she says.

Most bariatric patients have tried more conventional weight-loss programs without success. To qualify for surgery, they must have a Body Mass Index, or BMI, of at least 30.

People who want to lose weight but don’t qualify for bariatric surgery must go the traditional route -- diet and exercise. And for that, the remedy involves using good old common sense.

As chief nutritionist at Memorial Health, Helen Hussy sees patients sent to her by physicians, including those enrolled in the bariatric surgery program. To lose weight, a patient must maintain a diet of 1,200 to 1,600 calories, she says. “I rarely go below 1,200 calories because studies have shown we don’t get the allowance of vitamins and nutrients we need at that level,” she says.

“Start with natural, whole foods,” Hussy says. “When choosing foods, ask yourself, ‘Did it grow that way?’ If so, it’s healthy. The only exception is high-fiber, whole-grain foods.”

my kids, I didn’t want to do anything with my husband. Aside from going to work and church, I didn’t want to do anything. I had lost confidence in who I was.”

It wasn’t Tallent’s choice to weigh that much. She says she tried just about everything she could think of to lose weight.

“I started Weight Watchers at age 9.

NutriSystem, Metabolic Center, diet pills, you name it, I’ve done it,” Tallent says.

“I grew up with an obese father, and growing up with an obese parent is tough,” she says. “I was always overweight, but I didn’t become morbidly obese until I had my first child.”

Tallent never developed high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea or any other of the many ailments associated with being obese. “But I was well on my way,” she says.

Tallent works as a nurse in the office of Dr. Richard Greco of the Georgia Institute of Plastic Surgery. “I’m sure I was stared at, especially because I was overweight and working at a plastic surgeon’s office,” she says.

At times, people would say unkind things. “They don’t mean to,” Tallent says.

“They don’t realize what they are saying.

They don’t realize the hurt they can cause.

“People don’t believe food is an addiction,” she says. “But is, just like smoking and drinking. With obesity, you have an outward appearance of your addiction.”

Creative before creative was cool F

We’re “creative,” but not “Creative.” Know what I mean?

I confess sometimes I want to crash one of the Creative Coast’s networking happy hours – actually I wouldn’t have to crash because they’re always kind enough to invite me – and grab somebody by the lapel and say, “Hey, Mr. Open-Minded Guy Who’s Reinventing Savannah! Do you have any idea what it’s like to be the editor of the only alternative weekly in the southern half of Georgia? Since frickin’ 1996? Because I do!”

Of course I’d never actually do such a stupid thing — so keep those invites coming! But that leads me to these questions: Is Savannah really using the phrase “creative class” as it should be used? When people throw around the phrase “Creative Coast” — and they do, often — isn’t that just a euphemism for “People not from here?”

You know, the people my parents’ generation simply called “Yankees?”

If so, that’s not a new story at all, it’s a very old one. Savannah’s always had an inferiority complex regarding outsiders, whom we tend to put on a pedestal whether they deserve it or not. The corollary is that any native who chooses to stay is suspect. For years the joke was that for a Savannahian to be taken seriously in their own home town, they have to move away and come back.

But Richard Florida says the creative class isn’t necessarily based on origin or socioeconomic background. Maybe we need to revisit the definition Savannah’s using, and consider that to truly make this a “Creative Coast” we’ll have to include a much wider variety of people than perhaps some of us are comfortable including.

I’m not playing the elitism card, a common and unfair criticism of the Creative Coast Initiative. Having lived for decades on the receiving end of what passes for populism in Chatham County, I’d never be so cavalier about the need for focus, drive and professionalism — three qualities sorely lacking in much of the local population at large, and three qualities that the local creative class surely has.

No, the Creative Coast is not “elitist.”

But they could easily — and perhaps inevitably — become just another interest group among many here competing for media attention, political influence and yes, dollars.

Savannah is rife with well-intentioned people who strode into town determined to break through our notorious insularity, only to quickly fall prey to it themselves. or all its silliness, the recent uproar over James Dewberry’s efforts against the Creative Coast Initiative have resulted in some good dialogue regarding exactly what is the local “creative class” and how it relates to Savannah at large. The discussion certainly prompted me to better organize my very mixed feelings on the whole idea.

(I also must credit a very thoughtful blog post titled “SEDA/Dewberry Donnybrook: Exposing Fault Lines in Savannah” at www.savannahred.blogspot.com. I rarely agree with Savannah Red on much, but he absolutely nails it there.)

When Richard Florida, author of the Creative Class concept — literally, as in he wrote the seminal work Rise of the Creative Class — came to the Lucas last year, I finally “got it.” I finally understood what he meant about cities needing to attract the new class of young, mobile workers who produce goods and services not with machines and blueprints but with brains and creativity.

I internalized his words so much that I altered my entire approach to the content of this newspaper. Thus my mixed feelings.

Savannah’s “creative class” is exemplified by the engaging and ever-optimistic Chris Miller and his influential Creative Coast Initiative, an arm of the Savannah Economic Development Authority and hence partially taxpayer-funded. And a great public investment it is.

When we think of this local “creative worker” we think almost exclusively of a tech-savvy white person in their late 20s or early 30s who is generally a new arrival to town — essentially a liberal version of what was commonly known 20 years ago as a “yuppie” or “Young Republican.”

To a certain extent the profile proves Florida’s point: The creative class, needing no infrastructure beyond their own minds and a fast internet connection, migrates to wherever there’s quality of life, diversity and the tolerance for different lifestyles.

But my nagging issue is that a lot of us were “creative workers” in Savannah long before it was cool. When it was really uncool.

I was going to produce a list of names to prove my point until it became so long I ran out of space. You know who you are.

Suffice it to say that many of us decided to stick it out in “Slow-vannah” long before Richard Florida put finger to computer keyboard and without the aid of seed money from SEDA. But because we didn’t just blow in from Boston or Boulder or D.C. or Portland or Santa Monica — and because most of us are hovering at various points around the 40 mark — we’re not on anyone’s radar screen.

Swainsboro is a town of either 7,000 or 8,000 people, depending on whom you ask. Located 95 miles west and north of Savannah, it’s what people call a country town, complete with a center town square.

And this Saturday night, for the eighth time in eight months, Swainsboro expects a swarm of people roaming their downtown, munching cheese and crackers, sipping wine and gawking at art, lured to this out of the way spot for the Second Saturday Art Stroll.

“It’s a good vibe,” says Jack Bazemore, an artist and a psychology major at East Georgia College who grew up in Swainsboro. “It makes a big difference to see people going into the shops.”

He and Georgia Southern student Jessica Dixon have attended most of the Strolls.

In some ways the events were another chapter in Savannah’s tale of two cities, one black, the other white. At the afternoon rally, held at Second St. John Missionary Baptist Church in west Savannah, all but six people

present were African American. The audience at the nighttime rally at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist was two-thirds white. Both events drew 50 to 60 people.

Troy Davis’ mother and other relatives attended both events. Most people wore large round campaign-style buttons printed with Troy Davis’ face in the center and the word “exonerate” around the edge.

Each of Saturday’s events opened with prayer. In west Savannah, Pastor Michael L. Lewis’ resonant voice boomed from his pulpit while the church organ trilled softly in emphasis. By contrast, the downtown event opened with an intense prayer by Sister Jackie of the Diocese of Savannah, that echoed through the ground floor sanctuary.

“I am here because I don’t think Troy Davis has had his fair day in court,” said State Representative Al Williams (D-Midway), chairman of the Legislative Black Caucus for Georgia, in brief introductory comments at the west Savannah event.

“I am philosophically and religiously opposed to the death penalty,” said Williams.

“The justice that Dr. King, the justice that Jesus Christ died for must still be alive.”

“My story is similar to Troy’s,” said Drinkard at the start of his comments. There was no physical evidence and inconsistent eyewitness testimony in his trial in 1995 for the murder of a Decatur, Ala., junk dealer.

Saturday’s event was Drinkard’s third time speaking formally about his experience on death row. He is a member of “Witness to Innocence” a national group of exonerees.

Drinkard’s presentation lacks the polish of Thompson-Cannino’s talk.

His understated recitation of events was peppered with moments of insight about what happened to him. He seems to hold little bitterness over his ordeal, including his ex-wife who divorced him during his incarceration.

Drinkard is less charitable toward his half sister, whose testimony against him in exchange for leniency on unrelated charges she faced formed the basis of his conviction. He has not seen her since his release.

“If I hadn’t been blessed they would have killed me,” he says. Drinkard’s blessing came in the form of the Southern Center for Human Rights, who took interest and won him a new trial, at which he was acquitted.

After Drinkard spoke at West Savannah, Pastor Lewis’ wife, identified only as “Mrs. Lewis” sang “Oh, How I Love Jesus.” One by one, people stood, singing to the refrain, raising their hands skyward in praise, swaying and clapping, including Rep. Williams.

“I usually speak to groups of uptight white people. You guys are so joyful,” said Thompson-Cannino.

Drinkard and ThompsonCannino are a study in contrasts. Drinkard, tall and lanky, wearing jeans and a short sleeved shirt, looked the part of a working class middle aged guy who’s had a rough life. Before and after both events he stood alone, chain smoking.

Drinkard towers over ThompsonCannino, a five-foot-one stylish conservatively dressed blonde. Now a married mother of triplet teens, it’s easy to imagine her as the 4.0 GPA college senior, engaged to a dental student at the time of her rape.

Thompson-Cannino mingled with attendees before and after her talks, easily responding to questions. Her presentation is fine tuned from years of activism, speaking to groups of attorneys and judicial advocates.

In her remarks, Thompson-Cannino was candid about the feedback she received from friends after learning that Cotton was innocent.

“He probably did something else that he didn’t get caught for,” they told her. “He got three meals a day and cable TV in prison. He might be dead by now on the streets anyway, you probably kept him alive.”

She tried to buy into those arguments but couldn’t. “Why would anyone trade eleven years of their life for three meals a day?”

Between speakers at both events, Correia shared information on Troy’s case and on death penalty cases generally, staying on message: There is no physical evidence. Seven of nine prosecution witnesses have recanted.

Recanted testimony has not been heard.

“You don’t have to be anti-death penalty to support Troy Davis,” said Correia, presenting an editorial supporting Davis’ exoneration from death penalty advocate and former FBI director William Sessions.

wice last Saturday, Jennifer ThompsonCannino described being raped at knifepoint in her North Carolina apartment in 1984. Twice, in talks at two Savannah churches, she recalled that night 23 years ago—willing herself during the attack to look at her rapist and memorize details of his face.

Thompson-Cannino described her celebration of Cotton’s conviction, toasting with champagne: “It was a wonderful day.”

She related her daily prayers for nearly eleven years: “Please God, let Ronald Cotton die today. Before he dies, let him be raped so that he knows what I went through.”

And twice on Saturday, in front of rapt audiences in Savannah, Thompson-Cannino described how, in 1995, DNA testing that was unavailable in 1984 proved that Cotton was not the man who raped her.

He was not the man that she had prayed would die. Cotton was innocent and another man was her attacker.

Since 1997 Thompson-Cannino and Cotton have been reconciled. They are affectionate friends, working together to educate others on the fallibility of single eyewitness testimony and the larger arena of advocating against the death penalty.

She was in Savannah last weekend as one of two featured speakers at two gatherings August 4 supporting exoneration of Troy Anthony Davis, currently on Georgia’s death row, convicted of the 1989 murder of off-duty Savannah police officer Mark McPhail.

Gary Drinkard, a former Alabama death row inmate exonerated in 2001, was the other featured speaker at both events, held at two Savannah churches. The day was organized by Martina Correia, the older sister of Davis. Correia leads the “Save Troy Anthony Davis Campaign” with involvement by the NAACP, the Diocese of Savannah, Amnesty International, students at Savannah State University, family members and others.

For sixteen years, Correia has led the effort to release her brother, whom she believes is innocent of the McPhail murder. On July 16, Correia’s efforts began to pay off when the State Board of Pardons and Paroles granted Davis an eleventh-hour stay of execution up to 90 days. Their hearing was scheduled for August 9. Last Friday, the Georgia Supreme Court agreed to hear Davis’ appeal in November.

“I asked God to move the mountain and he is gradually moving it,” said Correia at Saturday’s afternoon assembly.

News flash: crack, sex don’t mix

While on routine patrol at West Bay and Carolan streets, an officer was flagged down by a bystander who advised of a possible cutting at a Rogers Street residence.

Upon arrival, the officer saw a man standing in the living room of the house, completely naked. He had several cuts on the front of his upper body and blood was dripping down his torso. A woman was standing outside the house, yelling and apparently frantic. She was extremely sweaty and had a knot on the right side of her forehead.

According to the woman, the man forced entry into her residence while she was away. When she returned, the two began fighting and she threw a glass vase at him. The woman said the man gained entry through a window. Officers weren’t able to find any sign of forced entry to any of the windows.

She said the man didn‘t belong there, but according to the man, he and the woman were “making love” while she was high on crack cocaine. The two began arguing and she threw the vase at him. The man was taken to a hospital for treatment.

• An officer was dispatched to the area of 38th and Whitaker streets on a report of shots fired. While the officer was searching the scene, dispatch advised that a man had called to report that someone had shot at him and he was standing by at 39th and Howard streets. The officer located the victim, who told him he had been at a Bull Street liquor store when he saw a former employee inside.

The victim said he had filed a larceny report earlier that morning that named the employee as a suspect in the theft of a large amount of merchandise from the victim’s now closed-down clothing store. He said the suspect approached him as a second man reached into an SUV, pulled something from the back and tucked it in the waist band of his pants.

At that point, the victim became frightened and tried to go into the store. One of the suspects shot at him and the security guard called police. The suspects fled.

• Police were called to a Fontenot Drive residence on a report of a disturbance. A woman at the scene said that her brother has been diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic and that he wasn’t taking his medicine. The man accused his sister of stealing $25,000 from him. He told police he had been supporting the household and refused to do it any more. He did admit that he had been arguing with his sister, but said at no time did the argument become violent. He also admitted he wasn’t taking his medication, but said he would see his doctor as soon as he took care of his finances.

• A man knocked on the front door of an East 41st Street house, then when it was opened, stuck his foot in the door and pointed a pistol in the face of one of the residents. A second suspect went past the victim, heading to a front bedroom where a second victim was watching television.

Both suspects were carrying pistols and kept yelling, “Where’s the money? Give me the money!” at the victims.

One victim said he fell down on his knees then emptied his pockets to show he had nothing. The second suspect got angry and fired a round into the wall. The victim said he tossed the man his wallet, which contained his driver’s license and two credit cards. The first suspect became angry and attempted to shoot the victim’s dog, who was in the dining room.

The first suspect then took the victim’s keys off the living room table and the men left. No injuries were reported during the incident. Forensics was called to process the scene. Dispatch received a call about a suspicious vehicle with two men inside who resembled the suspects. The car had stopped in the middle of the road, but the suspects weren’t immediately located.

• An East 34th Street resident was inside his home when he heard a loud noise outside. He then got a phone call from a friend, telling him to go outside and check his car. When the man went outside, he found that the driver’s side window was smashed and a hammer was inside on the driver’s seat, so he called police.

He then called his friend, who said her boyfriend was “going to do something stupid.” The car actually belongs to the man’s father, so he called his father to report that the car had been damaged.

When police arrived, a neighbor told them she had seen a black truck pulling away from the damaged vehicle. Forensics was called to process the car and the hammer, but no fingerprints could be lifted. w

(1) Robert Theriault, 49, a courthouse security officer in Concord, N.H., was convicted in April of persuading a couple that he was a tester for an insurance company and would pay them $20 to have sex in front of him so he could evaluate a certain bedsheet and condom. (2) Aaron Meinhardt, 37, was arrested in Riverside, Mo., in July after a municipal swimming pool employee saw him expose himself. The arresting officer said Meinhardt asked him, “Am I (not) allowed to satisfy myself? It has been a long time since I have. What am I supposed to do, just keep it in?”

Crime Time in Wilmington, Del.: (1) Jesse Dale, 42, was arrested and charged with cocaine possession in Wilmington in June during a routine traffic stop after he attempted to throw his stash out the passenger window as the officer approached.

(However, the window was up, and the package bounced back into the seat in “plain sight” for the officer to base an arrest on.) (2) Also in June, according to police, Branden Tingey, 28, was arrested after closing hours in the manager’s office at Wilmington’s Polidoro Italian Grill, trying to open the safe. It appeared that Tingey was using a computer displaying a Web page on safecracking.

(1) A 21-year-old man fell to his death in Tuscarawas County, Ohio, in April when he leaned a little too far over on a hillside rock in order to write his girlfriend’s name on an available space on the surface. (Her name is Kaylee and not, unfortunately, just Kay.) (2) A 43-year-old man suffered a fatal heart attack in 2006 during sex with an exotic dancer in Pacifica, Calif., and homicide was ruled out because the death was captured on the video camera the man had set up to record their session. (On the other hand, the woman’s drug use was also on the video, and she was sentenced in May 2007 to a year in jail.) w

Three conservation groups in southern Africa appealed to the Namibian government to stop killing seals, and to turn its seal population into an income-earning tourist attraction. Namibian Prime Minister Nahas Angula met to discuss the issue with Francois Hugo of Seal Alert-SA, Herbert Henrich of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and Celeste Houseman, the campaign manager of the Namibian Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. “You are killing nursing baby seals in full view of all your visitors and you are now surprised that there is an international outcry, a global ban on seal products and a direct impact on your country’s tourist industry,” Hugo told the prime minister. Namibia has granted licenses to kill up to 80,000 pups and 6,000 bulls during the 2007, 2008 and 2009 culling seasons, which run annually from July 1 to Nov. 15.

Volcanoes

An undersea volcano off the east coast of Trinidad emerged above the ocean surface, belching methane gas along with a slurry of mud and sediment. The new island rises only a few inches above the Atlantic and is approximately 500 feet long.

European Blazes

All-time record heat across parts of southern Europe and nearby Atlantic islands sparked a string of huge wildfires that left firefighters staging an uphill battle to extinguish the flames. Some of the worst blazes blackened vast tracts of forests in Bulgaria, Macedonia, Greece and Spain’s Canary Islands. Special prayers were held in Romania for an end to the deadly heat and lack of rain responsible for the extreme fire danger. Officials in the Canary Islands say that blazes on Gran Canaria, off the coast of Africa, have been an environmental catastrophe, killing rare species and driving 10,000 people from their homes. About a third of the island’s forests were blackened.

Monsoon Flood Crisis

Authorities across South Asia struggled to respond to severe monsoon flooding that has wrecked hundreds of thousands of homes and forced millions of people to take refuge on embankments or along highways. More than 164 people have perished in flooding across eastern India and Bangladesh, where most of the victims died due to drowning, snakebites or the collapse of their homes. In Nepal, more than 86 people were killed by flooding over the past two weeks.

Gorilla ‘Executions’

The most lethal attack by humans on the Democratic Republic of Congo’s endangered mountain gorillas in 30 years left four of the animals dead. The bodies of three females and one dominant male silverback were found in Virunga National Park, driving up the primate’s death toll to at least seven since the beginning of the year. The four animals belonged to a group of 12 gorillas known to researchers as the Rugendo family, which has frequently been sighted by tourists. Officials said the “executions” were carried out by a militant group trying to scare wardens out of the park, and not the work of poachers because the carcasses were not taken. “This area must be immediately secured or we stand to lose an entire population of these animals,” said Deo Kujirakwinja of the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Congo program. w

Cult songwriter and offbeat visionary Daniel Johnston makes a rare local appearance

ficulties have been minimized through proper medication —something he’s been openly thankful for— and this measure of stability and freedom has allowed him to conduct short tours both here and abroad (Savannah’s show is one of only four Southern gigs this year).

to travel that much. It’s always trains and airplanes, and sometimes we miss ‘em and we’re stuck somewhere. I’d rather just play locally in Texas. It’s a big state and there’s plenty of cool places for me to play.

You just played the David Bowie’s Highline Festival in NYC. Had you met him before?

Daniel Johnston: No, but he has mentioned me in articles, which is really a compliment, because he’s one of the greatest of all time, for sure!

What’s the best part of being you in 2007?

Daniel Johnston: Well, I have a little bit more money now, so I’m able to live a little bit better. Of course, I’ve also been able to do more live shows, which means a lot.

What’s the single biggest misconception people have about you?

How much time do you spend working on either your artwork or your music?

Daniel Johnston: Well (yawns), I spend a lot of time on both. I’ll admit I’m a little lazy.

I’m having kind of a “hard to be inspired” period right now. But I still try to play for at least an hour a day. You know, I have three albums’ worth of songs that were written a while back that have yet to be released.

There’s a lot backing up!

I know that you were recently able to have your first house built very near your folks.

Daniel Johnston: Yep! Right next door.

How long have you lived there?

Daniel Johnston: It’s been about a year now.

I’m loving having my own place. It was some land dad had next door.

What’s the best part about living alone?

Daniel Johnston: Oh, it’s great to just watch movies all day long and just chow down!

You know, take it easy. I love to be alone. I always have.

You’ve been touring a bit more than usual over the last few years. Are you having fun?

Daniel Johnston: Well, actually I don’t like

Daniel Johnston: Well, because of the movie, I look like pretty much of a space case. Then again, that’s true! (laughs) Whatever they think is whatever they think.

I’m not really bothered, ‘cause I can’t change it. The songs mean the most, and you know, whatever else I might have done or said, I guess that’s my fault. (laughs) Lately, you’ve been finding local bands in the towns you visit to act as your band for that night. Has that been working out well?

Daniel Johnston: Well, it’s been a lot of good times! We’ve had a lotta fun and the bands have sounded great. They really know the songs well. We get together and have kind of a warm-up practice at the soundcheck, and it usually comes together pretty well. A few times things have kind of fallen apart, but that was no big deal.

Now we’ve come to the single most important question of this interview — and perhaps one of the most important questions you’ve been asked in a very long time.

Daniel Johnston: (lowering his voice to a concerned whisper) Oh... Okay.

What does Daniel Johnston like on pizza?

Daniel Johnston: What do I like on pizza? (laughs) Well, I like hamburgers and black olives.

That’s my favorites.

Just hamburger and black olives?

Daniel Johnston: Well, plus cheese and sauce, of course. Why did you ask me about pizza?

I thought your dad said you were waiting on a delivery from Domino’s.

Daniel Johnston: Oh, yeah! But I didn’t order a pizza, I just ordered some soda pop.

You had them drive soda pop to your house?

Daniel Johnston: Yep. I drink a lot of soda pop. (laughs) I do like pizza, but I make my own. I go to the store and I buy French bread and then I cover it with pizza sauce and cheese and pepperoni. hen Bob Dylan and playwright Jacques Levy wrote of “a high place of darkness and light (where) the dividing line ran through the center of town,” in the 1975 tune “Isis,” they were describing a mythical destination on one man’s spiritual journey.

However, they could just as easily have been describing the complex and seemingly dichotomous mind of Daniel Dale Johnston.

Perceived by some as one of the most accomplished songwriters of his generation and by others as an overrated tunesmith whose work is embraced by musicscene hipsters in search of a subterranean icon, a close examination of Johnston’s actual output —rather than the rhetoric surrounding it— makes a compelling case for the former, rather than the latter.

Over his quartercentury career, the 46-yearold singer and musician (he accompanies himself on guitar and keyboards, and plays drums on occasion) has written, recorded and released hundreds of songs.

His compositions, which have been covered in concert and on record by such well-known alt.rock acolytes as Beck, Wilco, Tom Waits, The Flaming Lips and Yo La Tengo, fearlessly chronicle Johnston’s own travails.

It’s that ability to cut to the quick, and to expose his own dreams and memories of fear, joy and conflict in the most raw and unfiltered terms that causes some to discount (or in some cases, flatly dismiss) Johnston’s work. However, it is this unbridled passion for the “glory of the moment” that has won him legions of loyal fans worldwide. They find in Daniel Johnston’s music (and, it must be said, in his true-life story, inextricably linked to much of his artistic output), evidence of hopefulness in a world gone horribly awry.

Though well-known to underground and “outsider” music aficionados for decades, Johnston’s mainstream profile increased dramatically in 2005 with the release of the award-winning documentary feature The Devil & Daniel Johnston. Eight years in the making, it shined a welcome light into the relatively private world of this uniquely creative personality.

Since his late teens, Johnston has suffered from severe bouts of manic depression — a condition he acknowledges as having a noticeable affect on the content of his songs, and which is perhaps most evident in his surreal, comic book-inspired, analogous paintings and drawings ,which have become highly prized by collectors.

Cosmic Charlie

Initially formed in 1999 as a one-off project to laud fallen Grateful Dead guitarist and figurehead Jerry Garcia, this Athensbased tribute act has steadily risen among the ranks of many similarly-themed groups.

Today, they are widely becoming known as one of the most faithful practitioners of this most sincere form of musical flattery.

However, that doesn’t mean they sound just like the fabled Dead. In fact, one of the things that befuddles some in the crowds —but which has won them the acclaim and friendship of many actual associates of the GD— is their willingness to remain true to the restless spirit of that legendary improvisatory band of psychedelic warhorses.

Using The Dead’s back catalog and voluminous library of officially-sanctioned bootlegs as their guideposts, Cosmic Charlie pull standout tracks and basic arrangements, but pride themselves on applying the same unpredictable nature the original band was known for to their own live shows. And it’s working out very well.

While CC still play regularly at clubs and small venues across the USA, they are increasingly headlining shows in theatres and large, outdoor festivals (including festivals The Dead frequented in their heyday), and it is not uncommon for former GD members or associates to sit in with the group on stage — such as keyboardist Vince Welnick, Ratdog members Mark Karan and Robin Sylvester, and GD archivist and songwriter David Gans.

Says Gans of CC’s devotion to the music he’s devoted a large portion of his life to exploring, “They really are a great band - they do this music the way it should be done: by having the conversation in their own voices.”

This show marks the 12th anniversary of Garcia’s death, and will be their only local appearance this summer. And, yes, unlike The Dead, they do take requests. Sat., 10 pm, Loco’s (downtown).

Say what you will about this multiPlatinum-selling group of ex-S.C. frat boys, they know how to put on a crowd-pleasing show. True, their music, production, and image is not what anyone might consider

progressive or ground-breaking (unless you consider a black man fronting an all-white soft rock band in the South a progressive endeavour) —in fact, were it not for frontman Darius Rucker’s Eddie Vedder baritone, most might not even find the group’s recordings all that unique or memorable— but they have managed to stay together for approximately a decade longer than most of us thought they would.

While they’ve never been able to replicate the mind-boggling success of their major-label debut (which has sold in excess of 16 million copies to date), they maintain legions of loyal fans who snap up their lower-key newer efforts and pack their theater shows, State Fair performances, and resort amphitheater gigs like this one.

Nothing if not consistent (and increasingly more musically adept with each passing year), they are the very definition of a safe bet in the often risky world of rock concerts. If you’re a fan, you’ll likely walk away thrilled, and if you don’t actually despise them on principle, you’ll probably wind up surprisingly impressed with their energy and solid (if rather mundane) pop songwriting chops. Latin Jazz Motion

Over the past few years, a handful of fun and mildly adventurous jazz groups have spring up in our region. This spicy, danceoriented combo —led by veteran percussionist David Lugo— is one of the only acts in the area to specialize in the Latin variant of this improvisational art form, and in a very short time on our local scene, they have found themselves quite in demand. If you normally shy away from seeing live jazz because of the stigma of elitism that unfortunately hangs over many jazz venues, give Latin jazz a try. You may find its funky, danceable rhythms and often festive vibe an easier entry into the overall jazz canon. Plus, both these bar/restaurant venues are about as relaxed as one can find in this area. eace, Love & BBQ or Fried Shrimp. It’s the motto on Gerald’s Diner tie-dye Tshirts, the shirt Gerald Schantz is wearing when I enter his business for lunch.

I of course am wearing a T-shirt I tiedyed myself. With so many places in Savannah to eat it’s nice to know you’ve made the right choice as soon as you open the door and go inside.

After the T-shirt the next thing that hits you is the BBQ aroma. I wanted to get right to it, I wanted to just sit down and eat. So I did.

There are no pretensions at Gerald’s. It’s a small, simple restaurant, six rectangular tables in front of large windows that let in lots of natural light.

There’s a round table for groups. No music, no waiting outside in long lines.

There is wifi and there’s an un-obtrusive television.

On the table, just what’s needed: ketchup, mustard, sea salt, a black pepper grinder, a bottle of one of Gerald’s three homemade

BBQ sauces and a roll of paper towels.

I sat at the counter. Gerald made my fresh squeezed lemonade to order. I had Cheesy Mac and Cheese. Fresh mashed potatoes. Tender ribs, meatloaf, collards and a biscuit.

And then I had more: honey carrots, lima beans and okra. The okra was real good. I found out too late, after I had no room left, that Gerald offers salads. Still… for dessert: from scratch, chocolate chip cookies.

He’d also let me taste the shrimp he’d cooked for his shrimp salad; Certified Wild Georgia Shrimp. Wow! I could taste the shrimp, not just the seasoning. And it wasn’t cooked to Firestone consistency.

At the end of my meal I was full and happy. The diner had delivered.

Gerald and I had met several months before and he’d invited me to lunch at his restaurant. Shortly after that I attended a continued on page 24

WINFest concert at The Savannah Actor’s Theater and Gerald’s Chuckwagon Catering was the caterer. I had a BBQ sandwich. I liked it.

When Gerald said that the diner opened in October 2006. I was surprised. I assumed he had been in the restaurant business for years, something I’d done myself, including a brief stint as the Executive Chef at the Charthouse right here in Savannah.

Restaurant hours are long, profit margins are small. Your product is highly perishable.

Finding employees can be impossible. What would drive someone to open a restaurant in Savannah?

“It’s just fun,” was his reply. I pressed.

He answered: “You never know who you’re going to meet. Some days I make new friends. I like to cook.”

Gerald’s Chuckwagon has taken him as far north as New Hampshire. Family reunions, graduations, office parties, oyster roasts, he enjoys them all.

But when asked what he really wants to do Gerald replied “I want to cook for movies.” He’s cooked for Francis Ford Coppola, Nicholas Cage and Rudy Giuliani.

Recently he catered the local production of the film Sidesho: “Every day when I drove up it was like Christmas or Hanukah, everybody was excited to see ya. They knew you were bringing ‘em good food.”

It’s the catering business that for now sets the restaurant hours. That and a commitment to quality. “Weekends and nights is catering, and I can’t be two places at once,” he says.

Summer hours are 7:30ish until 2 p.m.

Monday through Friday with the possibility of opening for breakfast on Saturdays in the fall. Currently Gerald’s Diner offers a great lunch special for $7.

During lunch our conversation always came around to “…bringing ‘em good food”:

“If they want something that’s not on the menu and we can do it, we’ll certainly do it for them,” Gerald says. “I would die before I overcook a shrimp.”

And one of my favorites: “I’m trying to achieve a consistency of quality. The food may always be a little bit different, but it will always be good. Nothing’s gonna be over salted. Ever.”

But for me that isn’t enough. Here in haunted Savannah I expect a good ghost story. And Gerald had one, not about the restaurant, but about his previous career, making stained glass windows: “I knew that my house on 31st Street was haunted because he was a trickster. He put a garishly wrong colored piece of stained glass into a window we were making,” he says. “There was no way on God’s green Earth that we put it there. We had to take the whole window apart and put in the right color.”

Now I really had all that I had come for.

As Gerald is learning, the Diner and the catering business are growing, changing. Gerald is proud of and enjoying it all. I think he knew all but one of his customers that day. Having regulars is a sure sign that things are being done right.

As I left he pointed to the logo and summed it all up: “It says Gerald’s Diner. It doesn’t say Dumb Ass Diner,” he laughed.

The Simpsons*

The Bourne Ultimatum  The third time’s the charm with The Bourne Ultimatum, the best in the series of films based on the popular novels by the late Robert Ludlum. While I appreciated the first two films’ efforts to bring the spy flick back to its gritty and less gadget-oriented roots, both felt as if they were constantly getting stuck in the same grooves, with repetitive action sequences, a squandering of great talent in throwaway roles, and a tight-lipped protagonist so onenote that viewer empathy was next to impossible. These problems haven’t all been rectified in Ultimatum, but they don’t nag as consistently as before. Matt Damon, suitably taciturn even though he’s still too young for the role, again stars as Jason Bourne, the former CIA assassin whose continuing bout of amnesia regarding his past perpetually keeps him searching for the truth, even as his agency handlers seek to have him terminated. Taking over villainous duties from Chris Cooper and Brian Cox is David Strathairn,

Becoming Jane 1/2

Perfectly pleasant yet also somewhat pointless, Becoming Jane comes across less as a motion picture and more as a victim of identity theft. Given the glut of exemplary films based on the works of Austen -- from the fairly faithful (Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice) to the radically reworked (Bridget Jones’s Diary, Clueless) -- the only sound reasons to create a movie based on Jane herself would be either to suggest some insights into what turned this country girl into one of the most acclaimed writers in the English language or to provide a comprehensive overview of her life and times.

But Becoming Jane prefers to take a more narrow view, focusing on one small period in her life (and, based on historical records, a spotty one at that) and trumping up the details of her brief flirtation with a dashing rogue named Tom Lefroy, who would later become Lord High Justice of Ireland.

cast as the latest government suit hoping to protect his own nefarious interests by taking out Bourne. The reactions of Strathairn’s character to constantly being outsmarted by Bourne are priceless and provide the film with its brief flashes of humor. And adding some much needed humanity to the proceedings are Joan Allen and Julia Stiles, returning to their roles as CIA operatives of different ranks. More ambiguous in previous installments, these characters are finally defined in terms of their motives and moral imperatives. Greengrass, returning to the series after taking time off to earn a Best Director Oscar nomination for United 93, tops himself with action set pieces that prove to be more exciting than those on display in his Supremacy or Identity. One of the lengthy chase scenes is especially impressive, and makes one wonder if Damon elected to forego a straight salary in order to be paid by the kilometer.

As a result, the Jane in this film never feels real, ultimately coming across as fictional a creation as Elizabeth Bennet or Elinor Dashwood or any other Austen heroine.

Still, within its own self-contained chamber, Becoming Jane is an agreeable period romp, missing the spark of the high-end Austen adaptations but firmly in command of its own romantic devices. Anne Hathaway, all-American in The Devil Wears Prada and Brokeback Mountain, adopts a British accent (shades of Renee Zellweger tackling Bridget Jones) and makes for a lively Jane (even if, physically, she more resembles Austen’s contemporary, Lady Caroline Lamb). Meanwhile, James McAvoy (The Last King of Scotland) brings the proper measure of rakish charm to the part of Lefroy. It all goes down smoothly, and if the incomplete portrait of Jane Austen sends even one person to the library to hunt down more info, so much the better.

The problem with a good comedy -- and make no mistake, The Simpsons Movie is a very good comedy -- is that it’s hard for even the tightlipped among us not to want to rush out and share many of the best gags with our friends. But boy, are there some real winners in this animated feature, ones that will be appreciated by folks who can’t even distinguish a Marge from a Maggie, or a Flanders from a Smithers, or an Itchy from a Scratchy.

Take, for instance, a brilliant bit -- choreographed with all the precision of a Gene Kelly musical -- that finds Bart skateboarding naked through the streets of Springfield.

Or a Titanic parody involving a hot band.

Or a marvelous jab at the inefficiency of this nation’s so-called Homeland Security measures. Or... You get the picture. Crafting continued on page 32

a motion picture from a current television series that’s been around for nearly two decades is a dicey proposition, but The Simpsons Movie fills the larger dimensions of the theater screen quite nicely. Running the length of four combined episodes, this flick takes Homer’s weekly display of idiocy to a new level, as his bumbling disrespect for the environment leads to Springfield being blocked off from the rest of the world by a giant dome, with the town’s destruction the ultimate goal of the overzealous head of the Environmental Protection Agency (voiced

by Albert Brooks, billed in the credits as “A. Brooks”). Knowing that Homer is the culprit, the town’s residents soon come a-calling with torches in hand and nooses hanging from nearby trees (baby Maggie’s rope has a little pacifier attached). But if there’s one area in which Hollywood remains blissfully, even blessedly, optimistic, it’s in the strength of the family unit, and as long as Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie stick together, they can lick any and all odds.

No Reservations

Movie-star wattage counts for a lot in No Reservations, and both Catherine Zeta-Jones and Aaron Eckhart burn brightly, both individually and in their shared scenes. She’s Kate, a workaholic chef whose life gets upturned when her sister’s fatal car crash leaves her in charge of her precocious niece Zoe (Little Miss Sunshine’s Abigail Breslin). He’s Nick, a sous chef who takes a position under Kate at a posh restaurant and quickly finds himself drawn to this tempestuous woman who considers herself the finest chef in all of New York and physically confronts customers who dare complain about her dishes.

A frothy confection on the surface, No Reservations, based on the 2001 German film Mostly Martha, spends a great deal of time on the painful loss experienced by Zoe as she comes to grips with the death of her mother. Mostly, though, the movie functions as a charming romantic comedy, one bolstered by the crisp camerawork by Stuart Dryburgh (The Piano) and especially the richly textured music by Philip Glass, whose score is so grandiose and award-worthy that it occasionally threatens to overwhelm the small picture it’s serving.

Rescue Dawn1/2

With apologies to William Shakespeare, when acclaimed director Werner Herzog makes a movie, there generally isn’t a method to his madness; instead, there’s madness in his method, a go-for-broke intensity that has informed most of this German maverick’s pictures, from his classics Aguirre: The Wrath of God and Fitzcarraldo to his recent (and excellent) documentary Grizzly Man. That aggressive (insane?) edge is nowhere to be found in Rescue Dawn, a fairly conventional if technically accomplished drama inspired by a true story. Dieter Dengler (played by Christian Bale) is a gung-ho U.S. navy pilot who, early in this country’s involvement in the Vietnam War, is shot down over Laos and held in a makeshift POW camp along with two other

Americans (Steve Zahn and Jeremy Davies, the latter basically revisiting his Solaris performance). Dieter couldn’t care less that no one has ever escaped from this prison, or that the jungle beyond the compound walls represents the real prison. There are no political allegories or points of view, no fancy special effects, and, except during a curiously flat conclusion, no displays of sentimental excess. This is simply a movie about a man at odds with his surroundings, and in that respect, it fits nicely into the Herzog oeuvre.

Hairspray 1/2

For over a decade, John Waters had been unleashing some of the most outrageous movies ever made before deciding to tentatively test the waters of mainstream cinema -- or at least as mainstream as this flagrantly maverick filmmaker could attempt. His tepid 1981 offering Polyester was met with a stone wall of shrugs, even with the gimmick of being presented in Odorama (patrons were given scratch ‘n’ sniff cards that, if memory serves, stank like sour milk no matter what number was scratched off). But his 1988 offering, Hairspray, was another story: An instant critical and cult success, it eventually was turned into a smash Broadway musical and has now been brought back to the screen, with the added songs intact. It’s one of this summer’s few out-and-out delights, smoothing out but never compromising the issues that made Waters’ original film such a quirky delight. An ode to being different, Hairspray stars delightful newcomer Nikki Blonsky as Tracy Turnblad, an overweight teenager who won’t let her pleasantly plump figure get in the way of following her dream in 1960s Baltimore. And her dream is to become famous, preferably by showing off her dance moves on The Corny Collins Show, a local American Bandstandstyle program that’s a hit with the kids. Her obese mom Edna (John Travolta in drag) is afraid her daughter will get hurt, but her dad Wilbur (a warm Christopher Walken) encourages her to go for it. Impressing Corny Collins himself (X-Men’s James Marsden), not to mention the show’s reigning pinup star Link Larkin (Zac Efron), Tracy does indeed land a coveted spot on the show, much to the disgust of Link’s girlfriend Amber

Von Tussle (Brittany Snow) and her wicked mom Velma (Michelle Pfeiffer). The movie’s first and foremost a musical, and director Adam Shankman does a commendable job of filming the song-and-dance routines in a manner that accentuates the total skills involved (the noticeable lack of rapid MTV-style cuts is greatly appreciated). The weakest cast link is, perhaps surprisingly, Travolta, who may have enjoyed returning to his movie musical roots (Saturday Night Fever, Grease) but nevertheless fails to adequately fill the large shoes of the late Divine, who was simply, well, divine in Waters’ ‘88 screen version.

I Now Pronounce you Chuck and Larry

Adam Sandler comedies frequently offer sequences that qualify as case studies in homophobia, so here comes I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry to serve as the popular comedian’s mea culpa, his belated realization that, hey, gays are people, too. That’s a worthy sentiment, and there’s much in the screenplay by Barry Fanaro (TV’s The Golden Girls) and the Oscar-winning team of Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor (Sideways) that examines that notion rather than just paying lip service to a PC attitude.In other words, there’s a good movie to be found in the premise of two firemen (Sandler and Kevin James) pretending to be life partners for financial purposes, but it’s repeatedly sabotaged by the desire to placate typical Sandler fans who, God forbid, wouldn’t want their boy to get too, you know, fruity on them. Thus, the movie opens with the promise of an open-mouth kiss between buxom twin sisters, peaks with the sight of Jessica Biel in a Catwoman outfit, and ends with the protagonists happily paired off in hetero unions. In addition to this confirmation of the movie’s straightman cred, there are also the usual frat-boy gags involving flatulence, obesity and racial stereotypes (including an unrecognizable Rob Schneider as a Japanese minister), as well as the added treat of Dan Aykroyd (as the fire chief) discussing his prostate, his sole remaining testicle and his diapered grandmother.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix



Those who like their Potter black will find much to appreciate in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, the fifth and moodiest of the J.K. Rowling adaptations to date. Chris Columbus’ first two entries -- both underrated -- focused mainly on fun and games, with the subsequent installments helmed by Alfonso Cuaron and Mike Newell taking on decidedly darker dimensions. The level of malevolence is raised even further here, thanks to the taut direction by unknown David Yates and a forceful performance by series lead Daniel Radcliffe.

Between the last film (Goblet of Fire) and this new one, it’s startling to note how the actor and the character seem to have aged multiple years, a testament to the maturity and intensity that Radcliffe brings to the role. Villainy abounds in The Order of the Phoenix, with Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) haunting Harry’s every move, a fluttering fascist named Dolores Umbridge (Imelda Staunton) taking over the Hogwarts school, and an escaped prisoner known as Bellatrix Lestrange (Helena Bonham Carter) arriving late to kill off a popular character. Add to those threats Harry’s issues of abandonment and estrangement, and it’s no wonder the lad can’t keep those roiling emotions in check. In this respect, Phoenix operates not only as a story-specific fantasy flick but also as a universal teen angst tale, a farflung Rebel Without a Cause in which the protagonist tries to comprehend the adult world he’s on the verge of entering while simultaneously struggling to cut the umbilical cord of childhood. Because of this slant, this emerges as the most dramatic of the five films to date, with betrayals coming from both memories (a flashback involving Harry’s dad and professor Severus Snape, again played by Alan Rickman, is startling in its implications) and mortals (Judas, must you betray me with a kiss?) only serving to drive the nail into Harry’s splintered psyche even deeper. Fortunately, Harry’s friends won’t leave him alone -- even when he’s surly toward them -- and he receives a muchneeded support system from best buds Ron Weasley (Grint) and Hermione Granger (Watson) as well as a seemingly spacy blonde named Luna Lovegood (newcomer Evanna Lynch, wonderfully embodying the most interesting of the new characters).
