Tourists and new residents make their way to Savannah for a variety of reasons. For anthropologist and museum consultant Dr. Deborah L. Mack, the lure was somewhat different: “I moved to Savannah because it’s the closest thing to Dakar on this side of the Atlantic,” she says.

Lest the name Dakar conjure images of a mythological “dark continent,” note that the African city of two million is the capital of the Republic of Senegal and was once known as “the Paris of West Africa.”

Savannah and Dakar do share important similarities. Both are port cities on the Atlantic coast. Both are rich in history, contain strong cultural diversity, and have comparable ecological environments.

“For an anthropologist,” says Mack, “Savannah is a mother lode. The architecture, the food, the air, the weather, the topography of this place is extraordinary. I’m an Africanist, and like I said, this is the closest I can get to it in this country.”

The Chicago native and Northwestern University grad has coordinated a number of influential and sometimes groundbreaking exhibits, including for Cincinnati’s National Underground Railroad Freedom Center and New York’s Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.

She was appointed in 2005 to the Scholarly Advisory Committee for the Smithsonian Institute’s planned National Museum of African-American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. To place in context how big a deal that is, consider that other committee and council members include famed educator John Hope Franklin, multimedia entrepreneur Quincy Jones, and media powerhouse Oprah Winfrey.

Since moving to Savannah three years ago, Mack has served as a consultant for projects involving Ossabaw Island, the Beach Institute, and the Owens-Thomas House. Recently, however, her work took her into Mississippi blues territory. There, she lent her skills for historical interpretation to the B.B. King Museum and Delta Interpretive Center, scheduled to open in 2007.

“In the tradition of B.B. King’s community at the time, the people who were in the neighborhood became his family,” she says.

“We understood that there was something that B.B. King came from, and that we were obliged to put it out there.”

Likewise, when examining Savannah’s rich history as promoted by the heritagetourism industry, Mack saw there was much more to the city’s story than is generally discussed -- possibly because much of it still remains undocumented.

Because studies of slavery and even life among free African Americans during the 1700s and 1800s focus primarily on rural areas, the public knows relatively little about those African-Americans who lived in urban centers like Savannah. Yet their impact is everywhere, from the buildings in which people reside and work to the foods that literally provide Savannah with much of its cultural flavor.

A simple example of the unacknowledged African influence on the Historic District was the use of the building material known as “tabby,” a mixture of oyster shells, water, and lime in various constructions. Signs on historical sites, such as downtown’s Owens-Thomas House, acknowledge that tabby was used in the construction of certain buildings but at present neglect to mention that the word and the formula derive from West African cultures.

To help bring greater balance to the story of Savannah’s past as the world knows it, Mack worked with the Telfair Museum of Art to obtain a series of grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities to fund a reinterpretation project for the Owens-Thomas House.

“This reinterpretation will include all the people who lived at this site, the free and enslaved, white and black people. Our hope is to really show all of those who lived here in a three dimensional fashion,” says Tania Sammons, curator of the Owens-Thomas House.

“We really want to bring to life all the people who were here, not just the wealthy white men who lived here but their wives, their children, their slaves, and the free African-Americans who interacted with this house.”

This closer examination of the Owens-Thomas House will provide more information about the character of its neighborhood. The house contains, after all, one of the very few remaining urban slave quarters in the U.S. and receives some 50,000 visitors every year. What we continue to learn about and from it sheds revealing light on the lives of the AfricanAmericans, enslaved and free, that lived in Savannah from 1750 to 1864.

That knowledge in turn increases our understanding about the realities of slavery, black society (in which some blacks themselves owned slaves) and race relations. Beyond its extraordinary historical value, the reinterpretation project could also boost tourism in the city.

As a tourist destination, Georgia is the third most popular state in the South — behind Florida and North Carolina — and the seventh most popular in the country.

Within the state of Georgia, Atlanta reigns at the top. Of the millions who visit Savannah, relatively few are African-American.

The added incentive of a more complete history of the city would likely draw more visitors of every background. However, it is especially likely to draw more AfricanAmericans, a group that spends more than $5 billion annually on leisure travel.

“African-Americans are interested in their historical past and they want to see evidence of it,” says Mack. At present, she adds, “it’s not so much what there is. It’s what there is not. It’s what is not said, the

great silences that people are suspect of.”

Anyone who doubts that need only consider that a group of well-known African-American women authors -- including Beverly Jenkins, Evelyn Palfrey and Janice Sims -- are touring Savannah this month for an event called “Diva Daze 2006.” Members hope to combine work with pleasure, getting a first-hand look at a city some of them may use as a setting for a future novel while also enjoying a birthday celebration.

“The evidence shows that expanding the interpretation, not only here but in other places, allows more people to better connect with this experience,” says Mack, “to connect with Savannah’s past and feel that they are a part of it — feel that there are parts of it they can relate to.”

The treasure of information yet to be unearthed in the Savannah area is vast enough that Mack feels learning to properly perform such work is something natives of the city can and should become more involved in professionally. She notes that the history and culture here is one that has influenced cultures and trends worldwide, yet its value seems to be rarely recognized by those who actually live it.

“We have to put in the hard work, and the discipline, and the professionalism, and the follow through in order to control our stories,” she says. “And to have the outcome that we want. It means telling the truth!

But it means that the benefits come back into the community as well.”

Although the Beach Institute is not currently involved in a reinterpretation project, Mack notes that its current focus on contemporary art shows and other modern cultural events overlooks the facility’s original purpose.

Built in 1867, the Beach Institute was originally designed to educate newlyemancipated slaves and help them make the transition to freedom. It continued to serve as an educational facility until 1970.

It could still, Mack believes, serve a more socially and politically functional purpose than it presently does by identifying community needs and fulfilling them.

It could also benefit financially by more aggressively documenting and promoting its history.

As for the Owens-Thomas House, the final phase of its reinterpretation project requires sharing with the public whatever new discoveries are made about it.

“I think that within five years we’ll see a very different kind of interpretation of historic Savannah than one presently sees,” said Mack.

“Because that information is accessible, it will be taught to tour guides in the city. It will be taught to school children. And that expanded approach will really much more realistically show the Savannah of the past, including the domestic, political, commercial, industrial — in all kinds of ways.” w Aberjhani is the award-winning co-author of Encyclopedia of the Harlem Renaissance and author of I Made My Boy Out of Poetry.

The Savannah Friends of Music (SFM) have completed the third and final installment of a longstanding fundraising commitment to the Armstrong Atlantic Youth Orchestra Program (AAYO).

Lynne Davis, president of the SFM, presented a check for $22,000 to Ed Wheeler, AASU Interim Vice President of Academic Affairs, and Lorraine Jones, Executive Director of AAYO, at the recent AAYO Spring Concert held on the AASU campus.

The view from the French Quarter

When the rains finally came to the 37th annual Jazz and Heritage Festival in New Orleans - as they will do at least once during the two-weekend event - Big Chief Bo Dollis and the Wild Magnolias, aka, the Mardi Gras Indians, wearing the most ornate, most outrageous feathered costumes you’ll ever live to see, just finished their set, a robust and spirited hour especially since Big Chief Bo, singing in his 37th Jazzfest and wearing a new suit as he does for every Jazzfest, had just got out of the hospital.

The rain was coming hard, almost like hail, at a wicked angle from a glowering sky, but no one moved. No one panicked.

We knew it would blow over soon.

With no umbrella, no nearby covering, I did what everyone else did who forgot to bring a rain outfit. I took my folded chair and held it over my head.

“Aren’t we something?” said the woman named Greg standing next to me, a grin as wide as the oyster po’boy we had downed the night before at a bar outside the Fairgrounds, which houses the event. “Isn’t this the best?”

By the time the venerable and popular Irma Thomas came on stage, Greg, my new best friend, instead of offering a beer or a smoke, like many others in this joyous crowd, where I did not witness one confrontation, one act of aggression, was drawing diagrams, talking topography and showing me why the Ninth Ward didn’t have a chance when the levees broke.

She wasn’t wearing a Katrina-related T-shirt but others were. Eight months later, there’s still trash, still tacked signs for roofers, still tick-tack-toe images of coded numbers and letters chalked on front doors, still sentiment, strong sentiment.

“Make levees, not war” is popular - in English and Yiddish (“Makht gut levees, nischt milkhomos”).

“FEMA,” reads another shirt. “Find Every Mexican Available.”

Not too far away are signs offering Spanish lessons. Spanish is big.

Spanish is important. So are Mexicans.

In future visits, I’ll be looking for new Mexican-Cajun restaurants, new skin hues of Latin-African-American-Caucasian marriages, new saffron pork po-boys.

“OPRAHHELPUS,” read another handpenned sign, modest but effective.

But for all the emotion toward FEMA, the insurance companies, all the soggy sofas and piles of new plaster from people who have just returned to town, all the shotgun houses waiting to be gutted or bulldozed, all the estimated seven million tons of trash waiting to be picked up and deposited - now it looks as if the designat-

ed landfill is near the Vietnamese community, where a seven-story landfill is planned - there is the music.

The night before Jazzfest we roll into town around 10, venture into the French Quarter, find a parking space (from then on we rent bikes) and fall into The Spotted Calf on Frenchmen Street, where most of the clubs seem to cluster.

These are not fancy clubs. The paint is peeling. There is no charge to get in. Most people stand eyeball-to-eyeball with the musicians. You walk in and out with a drink in hand. What a concept.

At The Spotted Calf we hear a Gypsy jazz band, Vavaroom. That night I buy the band’s CD and leave a $5 tip to the bartender. It only seemed right.

There is no explaining New Orleans.

Post-Katrina, it’s different yet the same. I feel aquiver when we drive in and smell the fragrant yet moldy air. We are nearly below sea level, after all. Something makes me nervous. The possibilities. The past.

In Roy Blount Jr.’s excellent book, Feet on the Street, he writes, “In New Orleans, craps, cafe au lait, and the cocktail were invented, and the following were introduced to America: cocaine, tomato sauce, the free lunch. A New Orleans’s invention made sugar a common household item.”

“New Orleans,” he continues, “is where Walt Whitman (he said) first tasted sin, where Abraham Lincoln got his first full sense of the scope and the primary shame of the nation.”

Add Jazzfest to the list of firsts and bests. Picture this; Ten venues, each with five to six acts, one following the other,very little bleeding of sound. All day. The Fairgrounds, which still hosts racing, is huge.

The grass and outer track are soft and easy to walk on. The food is local, softshell crab po’boys, crawfish Monica, curry chicken patties, andouille gumbo. The security on the way in is a quick glance, a hand waving you on.

The acts are set but it’s the unexpected that excites. At Little Feat, Jimmy Buffet takes the stage. For Paul Simon, Alan Toussaint sits at the piano.

Waiting in line for a second crawfish Monica, I ask to borrow a man’s phone.

He’s the tuba player for the Rebirth Brass Band.

And when I leave Paul Simon for the drive home, my new friend Greg hands me a hardcover book, “Time and Place in New Orleans” by Richard Campanella.

“Take this and read it,” she said. “I want you to have it.”

Croc Chainsaw Caper

Cleanup efforts from Cyclone Monica’s rampage south of Darwin, Australia, came to a brief halt after a huge crocodile became tired of hearing the constant din of a chainsaw and snatched it while chasing its terrified operator up a tree. Peter Shappert, owner of the Corroboree Park Tavern, said the man was cutting down a tree that had fallen into the pet croc’s pen when the incident occurred.

“He’s been a bit upset with the noise, so he comes shooting out of the pond, runs up the tree and tries to grab Freddy the chainsaw man,” Shappert told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. “So he missed Freddy and grabbed his chainsaw instead.”

The 14.5-foot reptile lost a few teeth in the tussle with the purloined power tool, which he gave up after about 90 minutes. w

Officers met with the general manager and operations manager of a local mall after a bomb threat was called into the customer service booth.

A woman who works in the booth told police she answered the phone and the caller said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a pipe bomb in the mall.â&#x20AC;?

She said before she could respond, the caller hung up.

She said he sounded like a young white male. The mall was not closed because of the incident. A case report number card was given to the mall managers. â&#x20AC;˘ No suspects were identified in a recent case of arson. An officer responded to a parking lot in Yamacraw Village to find a car on fire. The front doors of the vehicle were open and the passenger compartment was fully engulfed in flames.

Two witnesses said that a woman started the fire by using a bottle of lighter fluid and matches. The woman then left the scene. A second car suffered heat damage along the passenger side due to the fire. Neither vehicle owner could be located for questioning.

The Savannah Fire Department also responded to the call, including two fire investigators. Bystanders advised the officer that the owner of the burned car lived in a nearby apartment. The officer knocked at the apartment, but no one answered. A case report number card was left on the apartment door and on the second car that was damaged. The burned car was towed from the scene. â&#x20AC;˘ A man who was stabbed three times in the right hand and shoulder on LaRoche Avenue refused to cooperate with officers. Police were called to the scene in reference to a woman with a knife.

When the police arrived, the suspect fled the area in a car.

The victim refused to give any information about the incident and did not wish to prosecute the suspect. The victim also refused medical treatment from the Medstar unit that responded. Police said the injuries were not life threatening. â&#x20AC;˘ A Victory Drive convenience store employee called police to report a theft.

The woman told an officer that while she was in the rear of the store making

coffee, a man walked out with a case of Budweiser beer. The man headed west toward Drayton Street. No contact was made with the suspect. The estimated value of the case of beer is approximately $12.99, plus tax. The employee was given a case report number card. â&#x20AC;˘ A man was charged with driving under the influence after he was stopped at West 37th Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. The man was stopped because he had circled the area several times. When an officer got behind the manâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s vehicle, the man sped up as if to flee.

The officer activated his lights and siren and the man pulled over and stopped. He told the officer he was looking for his son. A second officer began getting information to assist the man in finding his son. The manâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s eyes were glazed and his speech was slurred to the point that the officer could not understand what he was saying.

The man was asked if he had been drinking and he said he had not. As one officer tried to get information from the suspect, the second officer walked around his vehicle. Two cans of beer were seen in the vehicle. The suspect opened the door and the officer retrieved the cans, which were in a plastic holder and were cold to the touch.

When the man was asked what happened to the other four beers, he said he gave them to a friend. Because a strong alcoholic odor was coming from the man, he was given a field sobriety test, which he failed. He was arrested. w

In Savannah, Ga., in March, police picked up Carlos Little, wandering around a housing complex with a head injury, which he said was from a street robbery, but they later learned from a witness that Little and another man had fought over who was the better-”endowed” (and that, in the showdown, Little proved littler). And in Mexico, according to an April Reuters dispatch, one distinct presidential campaign theme this year is how candidates explicitly tout their manliness; one radio ad, for example, praises Felipe Calderon’s “balls,” while a TV ad acclaims Roberto Medrazo for having “big ones.”

Overcompensating

Convicted drunk driver Joshua Campbell, 23, filed a lawsuit in April against the driver he hit, Bloomfield Township, Mich., police officer Gary Davis, asking the police department to pay him for the

“humiliation,” “embarrassment” and physical injuries he received. Campbell claims that Davis unsafely turned around on Interstate 75 after a traffic stop and that the turnaround was the cause of the collision.

Bloomfield police say that Campbell, in addition to having a 0.17 blood alcohol reading, was going 90 mph and that three patrol cars on the scene with flashing lights should have been a signal to Campbell to slow down.

Prosecutors in Chicago are proceeding with the case against Howard Morgan for allegedly shooting at a police officer, although Morgan denies it, but what was clear was that in returning fire, police shots hit Morgan 25 times (from which he is recovering satisfactorily). Also awesome was the endurance of a 35-year-old man in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., who, according to a February Poughkeepsie Journal report, was a gunshot victim for the fourth time in the same housing complex.

Bright Ideas

The El Bulli restaurant in Barcelona, Spain, has long waiting lists for reservations for innovative dishes such as strawberry walnut mayonnaise, foie gras ice cream, cocoa butter with crispy ears of rabbit, and Kellogg’s Paella (Rice Krispies, shrimp heads and vanilla-flavored mashed potatoes), according to a February report in The Times of London. The meals of the artistic chef Ferran Adria cost the equivalent of $240 a person, but the world’s leading restaurant critics rate it at the top of their lists.

Shellie White, 30, was apprehended in Roanoke Rapids, N.C., in March, two years after she fled Arizona with her two children in a custody dispute with her ex-husband. For most of the two years, she has been living as a man (with a female partner), having convinced the kids, now aged 6 and 8, that she is actually their father.

(1) Because of unexpectedly large crowds visiting the new Hong Kong Disneyland in January, park officials limited admissions for the first eight days, provoking some mothers who had traveled from all over China to show their frustration by trying to climb in, after first tossing their children, including toddlers, over the fence. (2) Elizabeth Bragg, 23, was convicted in January in Huntington, Ind., when her 4-year-old stepdaughter suffered a car injury. According to the prosecutor, Bragg, intending to punish the girl for misbehaving, told her other kids to “hang on” but then unfastened the belt in the misbehaving girl’s car seat, and slammed on the brakes several times, causing the girl to bang her head.

Super-Protective Parents: (1) In Montde-Marsan, France, Christophe Fauviau, 46, was sentenced to eight years in prison in the death of a young tennis player who ingested a sports drink Fauviau admitted to spiking with a tranquilizer. Fauviau said

he spiked 27 young players’ drinks before their tournament matches against his son Maxime and his rising-star daughter Valentine. (2) Dieterich Doerfler Sr. was arrested in Seminole County, Fla., in March and charged with shredding his adult son’s child pornography collection, which police said he did in order to help the son avoid a probation violation.

Eleven women in the area around the nation’s capital have bonded, according to a February Washington Post story, around a tall, athletic man of German heritage (with a master’s degree and who tans easily), whom none has ever met. The man, known as donor 401, is the one whose sperm each of the women chose to be inseminated with, selected from a biographical catalog of the Fairfax Cryobank. That the women’s 12 offspring have a common father has provided powerful motivation for them to learn about each other, as a way of learning about 401 (who still has a waiting list for his stored sperm.)

In April issues of The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, the chief executives of two huge companies in politically sensitive industries were revealed to have received such extravagant bonuses or stock options that even veteran industry observers were said to be shocked. While customers of both companies are chronically panicked about rising prices, Lee Raymond, who retired as CEO of ExxonMobil in December, was reported by the Times to have received the equivalent of $144,000 every day for 13 years, and William McGuire, CEO since 1996 of the highly profitable health-insurance manager United Healthcare, was reported by the Journal to be sitting on stock options that, because they were mysteriously timed to kick in at the best possible date, are worth $1.6 billion.

Jeanne Flight’s constant evolution Young local band looks to the future

The Lion’s Den is probably the last place one would expect to find any of Savannah’s alternative rock bands hanging out at 1 p.m. on a Saturday afternoon.

The dim, lush environs of this conservatively decorated lounge inside downtown’s Desoto Hilton might strike some as being at odds with the image of debauched excess that’s often associated with young, underground musicians.

And yet, here we sit — 3/4 of Jeanne Flight and myself, drinking and chatting in a back corner, surrounded by hundreds of shelved, leather-bound volumes of who-knows-what.

In all fairness to the band, it was I who suggested this destination — and most of them profess to be unaware such a place even existed, despite the fact that they’ve all been matriculating at the Savannah College of Art & Design for years, and have likely passed this low-key establishment dozens of times without a second thought.

As at least a few of us are nursing hangovers —or merely suffering from too little sleep— we sink back into overstuffed chairs, sip our drafts (or our waters), and at least a couple of us methodically gobble down copious amounts of fresh popcorn in an effort to placate our angry stomachs.

Never heard of Jeanne Flight? Don’t kick yourself. Although the quartet has been together for almost 2 years, they are barely known outside of their core following — a following centered around SCAD. That may change soon, however, as all the members are set to graduate at approximately the same time, and upon finishing school this Fall (with degrees in a variety of different majors, including Sound Design and Industrial Design) they look to remain in town through next Summer, woodshedding before a planned move to Philadelphia in search of greener pastures

for their challenging, indulgent music.

Why Philadelphia? Keyboardist Kyle Fisher chose the destination. He says matter-of-factly, “Philly just seems like a good city for us,” and he’s originally from central New Jersey, so he should know.

“It’s large,” he continues, “but not like New York City or Chicago. A lot of it’s

Drummer Matt Sirois and guitarist Shawn Northrop (bassist Steve Speir was absent) agree that being based in a town with only one venue (The Jinx) that’s receptive to their music is more than a hindrance. If anything, it’s downright demoralizing to a young band.

“Touring is a big deal to us,” offers Kyle. “We really want to get out and get in front of as many people as we can. That’s more important to us than selling a lot of records. If we didn’t have these school obligations hanging over us, we’d drop it all, buy a van and hit the road tomorrow. We’d play every night if we could.”

Shawn agrees, adding that the shared love of what they’ve created together is what bonds the (admittedly dissimilar) bandmembers together.

“We all love and believe in this music and want to make it work,” he declares.

The group used to perform frequently with another young SCAD-based act, Technicolour Stallion. But, says Shawn, “Once they moved away, we haven’t been able to find anyone else that fits our style. Not having another local band to tour and play with regularly makes things difficult.”

It also doesn’t help matters that their music is by no means easy to swallow.

“People often tell us we’re difficult to classify,” says Kyle, “but we’re not that eclectic. We have a recognizable style.”

Dark, moody, disjointed and chaotic, it’s an unsettling blend of emo angst and the kind of trippy, meandering sonic explorations one might expect from prog-rock revivalists like Spock’s Beard or a certain other experimental, punktinged band.

“I’m not gonna lie,” says Matt with a hint of pride. “We get compared a lot to The Mars Volta — which we’re fine with, because we’re evolving all the time.”

“As far as a concept goes, we’re basically trying to construct images out of the sounds,” offers Shawn.

“We’re all visual artists,” Matt explains.

“So, we all think very visually. And that’s everyone’s dream, man! To help someone create pictures in their head through your music? I mean, come on.” w Jeanne Flight plays The Jinx Friday. Yamacraw Public Art -- The Project Committee will host a ribbon cutting ceremony for the Yamacraw Public Art Park in front of the First Bryan Baptist Church in Yamacraw Village on Saturday, May 13, 2006, from 1-3 p.m. The event will include poetry; singing by the First Bryan Baptist Church Choir and Dance Group; Native American dancing, drumming and historical interpretations; traditional African dances by the Ayoluwa African Dance Theater; and, Jamal Touré will provide a historical interpretation of the site.

Savannah gets a rare treat next week, as one of the poetry world’s brightest young lights gives a reading.

Hosted by the Poetry Society of Georgia, Francisco Aragon reads Tuesday, May 16, at 7 p.m. at St. Paul the Apostle Episcopal Church at 34th and Abercorn. The meeting is free and open to the public.

Currently the Director of Letras Latinas at the Institute for Latino Studies at the University of Notre Dame, Aragon’s multicultural background informs his vibrant poetry.

Born in San Francisco of Nicaraguan descent, Aragon lived in Spain for a decade before coming back to his native United States to teach and write.

Aragon spoke to us from his office in South Bend, Indiana.

Connect Savannah: Tell us more about what you do at Notre Dame.

Francisco Aragon: I’m a professor of Latino Studies at Notre Dame. I’m in charge of the literary unit here. The work that I do in my job is on behalf of U.S.-born Latino poets. Basically my job is to conceive of and implement various programs that help enhance the visibility of Latino literature.

I just edited an anthology that will be published about a year from now by the University of Arizona, called Expanding Borders: The New Latino Poetry. It features 25 emerging poets with no more than one book in print.

I’m also very excited about a National Endowment for the Arts-funded initiative we’re doing Connect Savannah: As a jourcalled “Poetas y Pintores: nalist, I’m struck by how your Artists Conversing with poems are very much in the Verse.” It’s a wondermoment. Not slices-of-life exful multidisciplinary actly, but detailed chronicles of initative that involves 12 Francisco Aragon particular moments in time.

What happened to Wendy?

Cultural Arts Theatre performs another take on Peter Pan The very name “Peter Pan” conjures up images of a boy who will never grow up.

In J.M. Barrie’s 1904 classic, that’s exactly what Peter Pan is -- a mischievous little boy who refuses to grow up. Instead, he spends his time as the leader of his gang, the Lost Boys, on the mythical island of Never Neverland.

Peter Pan has grown in one sense, though. He’s grown beyond his status as a fictional character to remind all of us what we’ve had to give up to become an adult -- the sense of fantasy and adventure that can only be found in the paradise of childhood.

But is adulthood really so terrible? Playwright Christopher Soucy decided to take a look at one of the most important characters in the Peter Pan books, plays and movies Above, Alex Moisant -- Wendy Dar(Michael) with Ella ling, who was Wright (Jane); at right, lured from her Patrick J. Soucy shows us in his play Forgetting Peter Pan: The Further Adventures of Wendy Darling, which is being staged by the City of Savannah Cultural Arts Theatre on May 13, 14, 20 and 23 at 3 p.m.

After returning home, Soucy says Wendy went on the greatest adventure of all.

She grew up and experieced life.

Soucy is directing the production of his play. “The show focuses on the adult Wendy Darling and her daughter, Jane,” he says. “It is a tale about remembering childhood adventures and other things people might forget.”

Some aspects of the play are drawn from Barrie’s book, but others are original with Soucy. “You can’t remember Neverland if you grow up, but Wendy did,” he says.

One of the rules of Neverland is that adults cannot go there. “Neverland comes to her,” Soucy says. “She is visited by Tinkerbelle, Tiger Lily and Captain Hook.”

It’s no accident that the only adults who live in Neverland are pirates. Children sometimes -- or perhaps often? -- view adults as villains.

In Soucy’s play, Wendy still remembers every detail of every adventure she had

in Neverland. “This play is about reliving your hopeful self, your young dreams,” Soucy says.

While the play is a City Kids Production, adults will enjoy it, too. “It’s primarily a family show,” Soucy says. “There is nothing controversial in it. The subject matter is based on a children’s book, but it will appeal to all ages.”

The 11 cast members have been rehearsing for four weeks. “It’s a very challenging piece,” Soucy says. “There are a lot of aspects to it. For one, it takes place in London.”

Soucy says his cast is up to the challenge. “All the actors are wonderful,” he says. “They are working hard. There are four adults in the cast, three who are college-age and teenagers and two children.”

For the past four years, Soucy has worked as the City of Savannah Department of Cultural Affairs Theater Specialist. Before that, he handled the department’s touring shows.

“I first moved here 15 years ago,” Soucy says. “From that time, I have worked with local theater companies.

The city has always been part of my job. This is the fifth show I’ve written for the Black Box Theatre.”

In some of those productions, Soucy has tackled the works of Edgar Allen Poe and Mark Twain. “I like to take works of literature and portray them in a way that does not replicate the story,” he says.

“There is so much wonder and great wisdom in those books,” Soucy says.

“Hopefully, these plays will inspire people to want to read them.”

There are many reasons to see Forgetting Peter Pan: The Further Adventures of Wendy Darling, Soucy says. “It’s wonderful escapism,” he says. “There are thrilling sword fights. While 1996’s Mission: Impossible featured some wild action scenes -- remember that helicopter in the train tunnel? -- it was mostly memorable for Brian De Palma’s stylish direction and a screenplay that left too many moviegoers vigorously scratching their heads. The 2000 sequel elected to focus more on the wham-pow-bang factor, but as (over)directed by John Woo, the movie proved to be a soulless enterprise. For Mission: Impossible III, instead of going for an established director like De Palma and Woo, Paramount Pictures and producer-star Cruise elected to take a chance on J.J. Abrams, who began his career as a scripter of mediocre movies (Armageddon, Regarding Henry) before being born again as the creator of the acclaimed TV hits Alias and Lost. Even if this turns out to be the last movie in the series, Abrams at least ensures it’s being sent off on a high note. Ethan Hunt has had a reassignment since we last saw him: He’s no longer working as a field agent but rather as an instructor of new recruits, thus allowing him to spend more time with his blissfully out-of-the-loop fiancee Julia (Michelle Monaghan). But a dangerous mission beckons, and of course he chooses to accept it. This mission is also tainted with a whiff of the personal, as he learns that his best student, Lindsey Farris (Keri Russell, star of Abrams’ first series Felicity), has disappeared while investigating the shady affairs of weapons dealer Owen Davian (Philip Seymour Hoffman). He agrees to take charge of a rescue team consisting of Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames), Declan (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) and Zhen (Maggie Q). Look, I’m as sick of hearing about Cruise’s offscreen nonsense as anyone else. But the great thing about the magic of the movies is that it immerses us in fantasy worlds that more often than not allow us to disengage from real-life baggage.

In other words, Cruise is accomplished -- and canny -- enough to know that a well-oiled summer flick is just the item to make us all forgive him -- at least temporarily -- for his indiscretions. Yet the performance of note in Mission: Impossible III belongs to Philip Seymour Hoffman, fresh from winning an Oscar for last fall’s Capote. It’s a compliment when I state that Hoffman’s Owen Davian would have made a formidable Bond villain, and it’s a shame that the part isn’t much larger. But Owen’s icy stare and reptilian movements make it clear that he’s as ruthless as he is humorless, and when a woman spills a drink on him during a fancy soiree, his look suggests that he’d kill her on the spot if it weren’t for those hundreds of pesky eyewitnesses surrounding them. w

UNITED 93 

Writer-director Paul Greengrass’ superb 9/11 docudrama United 93 is one of those movies that should be seen, but it’s understandable that many viewers won’t want to see it, and no amount of critical hosannas will change their minds. United 93 takes us through the morning’s activities, beginning with the terrorists praying at dawn and hopscotching through various air traffic control rooms scattered along the northern corridor of the country as well as the Federal Aviation Administra-

tion HQ. The first half of the movie spends more time with traffic controllers desperately trying to make sense of the chaos descending on them at sickening speed.

Monitoring the blips on the screens, the controllers begin to sweat when particular ones veer off course or disappear. And then there are those reports that smoke is emanating from one of the World Trade Center towers, in the vicinity where one flight’s location was last verified. Surely one has nothing to do with the other? The implications sicken the characters as much as it churns up roiling emotions in viewers.

In the second half of the film the connective tissues fall away, and we’re left with the saga unfolding aboard United 93. Realizing that these terrorists plan to use the plane as a weapon of mass destruction -- and thereby realizing that no Entebbe-style rescues are in the works -- the passengers decide only they can stop the murderers at the controls. It’s noble to imagine their collective motive was to honor God and country, but this movie is honest enough to acknowledge that, like any of us caught in such a situation, self-preservation comes first. And it’s a testament to the movie’s

power that we find ourselves praying for a safe landing even though history has long dictated otherwise. Greengrass refuses to take the bait of making a picture that can be tagged as propagandistic or too political. How restrained is Greengrass’ approach? Understand that passenger Todd Beamer’s catchphrase “Let’s roll” -- you know, the one that’s been co-opted by seemingly every politician and pundit from coast to coast -- is barely audible when Beamer speaks it. continued on page 26

One would have to travel deep into the 1990s -- during the era of Mrs. Doubtfire and The Birdcage -- to find a comedic Robin Williams performance that was more than simply incessant and annoying shtick.

RV, therefore, marks the first time in at least a decade that Williams merges his patented humor with a recognizably human character, and the balance suits him well. It’s just a shame that the vehicle that carries this engaging performance doesn’t offer a smoother ride. Williams stars as Bob Munro, a workaholic who spends far more time sucking up to his boss (Will Arnett) than racking up quality hours with the wife (Cheryl Hines) and kids. Ordered to attend a business meeting in Colorado when he’s supposed to take the family to Hawaii for a vacation, Bob decides to meet both obligations by renting an RV and heading out to the open spaces with his clan -- and thereby making it easier to sneak away long enough to participate in the powwow. That quintessential tug-ofwar between career and home is too omniscient to ever be ignored by filmmakers looking for an easy angle, but for a while, RV looks as if it’s going to be a perceptive, take on the matter. But no: Director Barry Sonnenfeld reveals an obsession with labored slapstick and potty humor, meaning we get numerous scenes in which Bob falls down hills, gets run over or finds himself covered head-to-toe in fecal matter.

AKEELAH AND THE BEE



Akeelah and the Bee, which in addition to its underdog roots also manages to come across as a mesh between the documentary Spellbound and Boyz N the Hood refitted with a happy ending, is the latest of this month’s inspirational yarns (following Taking the Lead and Preaching to the Choir).

It’s also the most genuinely touching. The lion’s share of the credit for its success goes to Keke Palmer, who essays the central role of Akeelah Anderson. Like Hard Candy’s Ellen Page, she’s a teenage actress, yet both her understanding and command of her craft enable this rising talent to carry the picture like an established trouper. Her part may not be as complex as Page’s role in the pedophile picture, but she ably handles whatever challenges are thrown her way. Growing up in south LA with her widowed mother (Angela Bassett) and two older siblings, Akeelah’s only true passion is for spelling -- a seemingly frivolous fancy considering her dour surroundings and dead end options. But determined to somehow put his decrepit school on the map, the principal Mr. Welch (Curtis Armstrong) encourages Akeelah to try out for a competition that will determine which student will represent them in upcoming spelling bees. Akeelah easily trounces the competition and in doing so catches the eye of Dr. Larabee (Laurence Fishburne), Mr. Welch’s friend and a former spelling wiz himself. Dr. Larabee agrees to coach

Michael Douglas plays Harrison Ford and Kiefer Sutherland costars as Tommy Lee Jones in The Sentinel, the latest thriller that tries to put one over on the audience but ends up only fooling itself. It’s clearly no match for The Fugitive, though this "innocent man on the lam" yarn gets some mileage out of a fairly taut first act and an appropriately constipated Michael Douglas performance. Douglas is cast as Pete Garrison, a career Secret Service agent ballsy enough to carry on an affair with the First Lady (Kim Basinger). But evidence soon surfaces that a foreign outfit is plotting to assassinate the President (David Rasche), and that their inside man is no less than a member of the Secret Service. Because Garrison is concealing his illicit affair - and being led by the nose by the real culprits -- his lie detector results convince agent David Breckinridge (Sutherland) that his former mentor is the traitor in the ranks. Garrison manages to avoid cap-

Writer-director Paul Weitz has proven himself adept at different forms of comedy -- he’s the guy behind In Good Company, About a Boy and the original American Pie -- but this time he’s bitten off more than he can masticate. The only factor that saves American Dreamz from completely selfdestructing is the strength of an ensemble cast led by Dennis Quaid. Quaid gamely plays President Staton, a buffoon who on the morning after his reelection picks up a newspaper for the first time during his reign and realizes that, contrary to what his Chief of Staff (Willem Dafoe in a wicked composite of Dick Cheney and Karl Rove) has been telling him, the world’s actually a complicated place. To take the Prez’s mind off weighty matters, the Chief of Staff decides to book him as the guest judge on the season finale of American Dreamz, a moronic "talent" show based on youknow-what. The show’s host, a repellent Brit named Martin Tweed (who else but Hugh Grant?), agrees to the arrangement but is more interested in making sure that his baby remains prime-time’s top-rated program. On that front, he has little reason to worry, as audiences adore two of this year’s crop of contenders: duplicitous Sally Kendoo (an effective Mandy Moore), who will do anything to win, and Arabian immigrant Omer (likable Sam Golzari), a reluctant terrorist-in-training who’s far more interested in show tunes than in following

Take the Lead might be a tad too predictable for my taste, but it’s just the sort of uplifting yarn that could conceivably generate enough positive word-of-mouth to emerge as a modest sleeper hit. Inspired by a true story (and rarely has that opening disclaimer been used so loosely), this centers on the efforts of ballroom dance instructor Pierre Dulaine (Antonio Banderas) to teach his elegant craft to a high school class of rowdy inner-city youths. Initially resistant to his efforts, the kids eventually come around once Pierre agrees to mesh his moves with their hip-hop music. Banderas and his young co-stars are attractive and appealing, and the subplots involving the students’ troubled home lives carry more currency than one might expect. w

Watching gloomy and insecure Olivia (Jennifer Aniston) make ends meet by working as a maid, it’s easy to picture her back in middle school, perhaps going through an “ugly duckling” phase that might have scarred her for life. Or after witnessing Christine (Catherine Keener) bicker endlessly with her husband David (Jason Isaacs), we understand it wasn’t always like this and find ourselves hoping for a glimpse of happier times. Set in LA, this seriocomic saga centers on the daily activities of four close friends. These four women retain a mutually close relationship, which in turn allows them to bounce ideas and actions off each other. Three of them are the friends with money of the title, though two help prove any number of cash-strapped adages: money isn't everything; money can't buy happiness; money can't buy you love -- take your pick. Friends With Money is effective in the way it makes us relate to all these characters and their struggles as they grapple with universal issues involving camaraderie, self-worth and the inability to come to terms with one’s mortality.

Akeelah through the exhausting bee season, and their goal is no less than reaching the Scripps National Spelling Bee finals.

From the mental approach espoused by Dr. Larabee to the presence of an unsmiling nemesis, Akeelah and the Bee milks the Karate Kid/Rocky formula to such an exhaustive degree that you half-expect a character to bellow “Yo, Adrian!” or order Akeelah to “wax on, wax off.” But what sets the film apart is the manner in which it details how Akeelah’s triumphs end up lifting the entire community. Her success is their success, and it’s truly inspiring to watch neighbors from all walks of life -- everyone from the postman to the local crime lord(!)

The SDT adult class rehearses â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; A diverse and energetic evening of dance hits the Lucas this Saturday night in Savannah Danse Theatreâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s annual end-of-season performance.

The program includes choreography to the music of Chopin, Khatchaturian, Prokofiev, Tchaikovsky and Delibes, as well as to more modern influences such as Fatboy Slim and the Dixie Chicks. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We also have some guests coming in to do two pas de deux,â&#x20AC;? says SDT Artistic Director Suzanne Braddy.

Dancing the famed pas de deux from Romeo and Juliet will be Karen Burns and Serguei Chtyrkov. Caroline Bragg-Brennan and Ben Hankinson perform the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Peasantâ&#x20AC;? pas de deux from Giselle. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re spring-like, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re light, and we thought they would fit in very nicely,â&#x20AC;? says Braddy of the two classic pieces.

In addition, the performance features two specially choreographed dances, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Tangelomangoâ&#x20AC;? by April Roe and Joanna Pitts, and â&#x20AC;&#x153;Right Here, Right Nowâ&#x20AC;? by Nikki Payne.

In a new development for SDT, members of the adult ballet class will perform a six-minute-plus dance called â&#x20AC;&#x153;Women,â&#x20AC;? to the tune of Carly Simonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;Let the River Run.â&#x20AC;?

Kathleen Collins, who teaches the SDT adult class, says â&#x20AC;&#x153;Womenâ&#x20AC;? came about somewhat serendipitously. â&#x20AC;&#x153;About four weeks ago, Sue said, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got such a great group of adults -- would they like to do something in the Spring show?â&#x20AC;&#x2122; I wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t sure at that point, because some people in class are fairly new dancers.

But I had such a great response. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got

about a dozen that come regularly to class, and there was no hesitation on their part.

Everyoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really risen to the occasion.â&#x20AC;?

Collinsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; adult class ranges in age from 16 to 50. Their dance is â&#x20AC;&#x153;more of a contemporary bent than strictly classical,â&#x20AC;? she says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lots of movement. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s very energetic.â&#x20AC;?

The success of the SDT adult class has been something of a pleasant surprise for Braddy and Collins. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was slim pickings in the beginning, but word started to get out, and we started getting phone calls,â&#x20AC;? Collins says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve done so well that we might add another class next year,â&#x20AC;? she says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In all my years of teaching Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve never had a response like this. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m just excited that adults are seeing ballet not only as great exercise but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fun. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s creative.â&#x20AC;?

Collins says taking up ballet at a later age doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to be difficult. â&#x20AC;&#x153;At first it can be intimidating -- itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a different language, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all in French. And people donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t walk turned out, they walk turned in,â&#x20AC;? she says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But I try to show people itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not this big scary thing. Each class builds on the other.

Braddy agrees, adding that, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also important for the young kids.
