The Tony Thomas Conundrum

THE SAVANNAH ELECTIONS aren’t quite over. There are two runoffs Dec. 3 – one for Mayor, between incumbent Eddie DeLoach and Van Johnson, and one for Sixth District Alderman, between incumbent Tony Thomas and Kurtis Purtee.

Thomas has represented the Sixth District, comprising most of Savannah’s Southside, for 20 years.

When he was first elected, there was no such thing as Facebook, Twitter, or smartphones.

Thomas quickly adapted to the new era, and has since maintained one of the most toxic social media presences in the local area — which is saying quite a lot.

of people who haven’t crossed him. It’s hard to argue with that.

But that answer conveniently leaves out that city resident who died in the house fire, or the constituent who literally had to leave town because of online harassment from Thomas, or the stiffed Savannah Mall itself, which is in his district (ironically where Thomas often points out businesses that have trouble keeping tenants), to name just a few examples.

One of the next most frequent questions is harder to answer: “Why don’t more people stand up to him?”

It’s a conundrum.

Following Thomas’s official censure in 2017 on grounds of public drunkenness and his misogynist attack on the WTOC reporter, I wrote a column wondering “Where are all the local activists when we really need them?”

questionable behavior — why the crickets on this one local election, out of all of them? Why the shrugged shoulders?

I don’t think there’s a conspiracy theory.

The answer, I think, is simple: People are afraid of Tony Thomas.

It’s a legitimate concern. Thomas can and will devote enormous time and energy to going after political and personal opponents.

It can be exhausting at a minimum, and dangerous at worst.

I have had Thomas demand that my employer fire me because of critical but accurate coverage of him, a public official.

If he wins, I expect more of the same. Who knows, he may even be successful one day.

Many, many others have similar stories to tell. But they sometimes have a hard time finding allies.

Thomas, however, has powerful allies.

One of the most frequently asked questions in Savannah is, “How does this guy keep getting re-elected?”

He has an “official” Facebook page as Alderman, and a personal page on which all manner of scorn and vitriol are poured not just on political opponents, but on anyone who criticizes him, including many of his own constituents.

There are vast collections of screenshots of these posts and comments, should the Alderman or any of his supporters be disposed to differ with my account.

Long before Donald Trump got elected on the schtick of being the most bellicose and abusive person on the public stage, Tony Thomas almost patented the concept.

From grand jury hearings on alleged sexual abuse of minors, to being publicly intoxicated on St. Patrick’s Day while representing the City, to calling an African American woman reporter the C-word on camera, to celebrating the death of a local man in a house fire whom he had disagreed with (also screenshotted), to having his shop evicted from Savannah Mall for nonpayment of rent (after which he attempted to use his political office to blame the landlord), to blaming a Fortune 500 company for the deaths of several of his puppies...

Thomas has run the gamut.

One of the most frequently asked questions in Savannah is, “How does this guy keep getting re-elected?”

The usual response is, “He comes through for his constituents, I guess.”

Thomas does try hard to deliver pragmatic solutions for district-level concerns

The usual group of people who spend all day on Facebook decrying and dissecting the ridiculous tweet of the day from Donald Trump, or maybe urging a boycott of a national company because of an insensitive ad campaign, were conspicuously silent about their own local version of Trump right on the Southside.

“It’s not my district,” some respond.

When did that ever stop them from having an opinion on literally anything or anyone else?

“It’s up to the voters,” others say. Of course it is — that’s true everywhere. Again, did that ever stop someone from having a position or voicing an opinion before?

“Many of his constituents like him,” say others. That’s true of literally every longtime incumbent that people were insisting needed to be voted out.

Unfortunately, I could have written nearly the same column this election season, as some local progressive activists who were extremely vocal and passionate about every other race in town — in their district or not — were again notably silent about Savannah’s Sixth District.

Except this time there was even less of an excuse from the progressive point of view: Thomas is running against an openly gay candidate, fully endorsed by Georgia Equality.

In the #MeToo era, in the wake of Thomas’s questionable personal and professional behavior, in the wake of widespread outrage about Trump’s also

Van Johnson. Who, if you’re a betting person, is probably going to be the next Mayor of Savannah.

(DeLoach, who called for the censure, was reduced afterward to appearing in YouTube videos helping Thomas promote various park projects — while Thomas continued to savage him in public.)

Any previous ethics or legal complaints against Thomas by constituents have all been dismissed.

Even the Savannah Morning News declined to endorse either of Thomas’s challengers in the general election, instead issuing no endorsement at all.

Think of all this. Think of all these obstacles.

And now think of the courage it takes to actually run against Thomas.

Think of the abuse you set yourself up for when you aren’t just writing about Thomas, but trying to unseat him from the office he’s held for two decades.

It’s quite a daunting task, which in and of itself says a lot about anyone who takes it on.

Early voting begins this week and runs through Nov. 27.

Kurtis Purtee: Keeping it hyperlocal in race for Sixth District

THE Tony Thomas story, frankly, bores me with its repetitive adolescence, debauchery and nastiness. Do you want to read something else about the 6th District Alderman? Go ahead.

When I met Kurtis Purtee, the man hoping to oust Thomas in December’s runoff election for City Council, at a Savannah Mall coffee shop, it was supposed to be his day off.

But he had walked that morning in the city’s Veterans Day parade. He was in between late day meetings with residents.

And he seemed to be enjoying his caffeinated beverage.

“I’m getting very little sleep and doing lots of running around,” he said. “I’ve been going at this pace since March.” His calmness and easy laughter didn’t seem coffee-addled.

Because he and Antonio Hunter split the anti-Thomas vote, the majority of 6th District ballots in November, he’ll have to wait a few more weeks before his eventual win or loss.

But Purtee is no stranger to staying up late and extra effort. In his 19-year career as a police officer, both in the Savannah area and in Michigan, he recalls many long nights.

Purtee currently holds the rank of Captain in the Georgia Southern University Police, serving the Armstrong Campus. He previously served in Garden City and in Flint, Mich.

What he likes most about policing — meeting people — well suits campaigning.

And judging by the number of his signs in his district, he’s met and impressed lots of people.

“When I’m not at community meetings, I’m at block parties,” he said. “The reaction has been, ‘Thank you so much for stepping up and doing this, we need somebody like

Since he’s running to serve the Southside district, basically everything in the city limits south of Tibet Avenue, his issues are hyperlocal and homely — or homeless, in one case.

“That’s where they camp,” he said after we drove over to Bell’s Landing, a Cityowned property next to an empty lot where once a restaurant stood and now the homeless reside.

“Police go back there but we don’t provide resources for these people,” he said.

“In other cities, innovative programs are paying homeless people above minimum wage to work.”

Purtee promotes the “broken windows” policing theory, saying that the district’s criminal activity — yes, there’s a Southside red light district — comes partly from poor appearances.

He’d like to see less focus on new photoop worthy parks that the City can’t maintain — or even finish in the sad case of Windsor so-called Park, little more than a sign with weeds.

Instead, he’d like to focus on less-sexy improvements, like curbing, traffic calming and business and institutional development along busy corridors, especially Abercorn Street.

“The old Kroger is one of those places that I’ve looked at,” he said. “Georgia Southern and St. Joe’s/Candler are resources that we can lean on.”

It’s hard for me to see how the City incentivizes private-institutional development in failing boxes like Kroger and Savannah Mall unless all parties have something in it.

If anything, Purtee suggests, several City and County service locations on the Southside are in a state of movement right now, leading to the possibility of municipal relocations.

It’s all about creating activity. Shades of “It’s Ama$ing?” on Waters Avenue? I hope not.

And that brings me to the last of several issues Purtee brought up. Financial transparency and responsibility.

A theme across all city elections this year, the budget is a wreck. Purtee joins many other candidates— who have already been elected — in calling for an independent forensic audit of the budget.

“It just seems more like a power struggle among City Council members rather than a team working together to solve a problem,” he said. “I would work well with the new council.”

Indeed, if Purtee in the 6th District and Van Johnson for Mayor win their run-offs, it would complete the rejection letter that voters started to write on November 5.

A rejection of the status quo under Republican Eddie DeLoach. And in Purtee’s case, a rejection of a particular Republican, Thomas, our own loathed and loved “mini-Trump.”

And I’m sorry if this story’s not as scandalous as the opening words implied it would be.

But you can write the next 6th District story when the city votes on December 3.

Words matter when reporting on bike safety issues

LAST WEEK WSAV reporter Claire Going produced a robust report on the hazards faced by people who ride bikes for recreation and transportation in Savannah.

Featuring multiple interviews, the package was nearly five minutes long.

It’s the most comprehensive look at conditions on Savannah streets produced by a local TV station in recent memory. Among the people Going talked with was a man who described being “afraid to cycle much around Savannah.”

He said, “When I go out, especially anywhere out of downtown, people have buzzed me, been aggressive towards me, and it has been really frightening sometimes.”

leading a congregation noted for its commitment to serving the community, did not matter to the folks who visit WSAV’s Facebook page.

You see, the Rev. Ashley Randall and people like him bolt out in front of drivers, forcing them to slam on the brakes.

Some even think they’re immortal, while others ride their bikes, “like dying is their mission.”

These comments are unsurprising and the negative response to coverage of bicycling is so predictable, there’s even a bingo card (https://www.connectsavannah. com/savannah/soft-pedaling-the-bicycletrolls/Content?oid=2502645) you can play while reading them.

Still, the prevailing notion that percolates up in response to reporting on traffic safety is this: People who walk and ride bikes do not deserve bike lanes, sidewalks, or other infrastructure that would make them safer because some of them break the rules.

As I have noted in the past, if a similar standard was applied to those of us who drive, all highway construction in the United States would immediately cease.

You’d think after all these years that I would finally learn to stop reading the comments and not get all upset. After all, it’s just words.

Well, words matter. While Going’s Nov. 15 story was sympathetic to people who ride bikes and the dangers they face, it’s sadly atypical of media coverage of crashes in which people are killed while walking and riding bikes.

The language used by journalists shapes public response to their reporting and that shows up in the comments. New research, also published Nov. 15 in the journal “Transportation Research Interdisciplinary Perspectives,” examined how news coverage of traffic crashes affects perceived blame and preferred solutions.

Researchers from Texas A&M and Rutgers conducted an experiment, “in which 999 subjects were randomly assigned to read one of three versions of a news article describing a traffic crash involving a pedestrian. After reading the description, subjects were asked “to apportion blame” and “assess various approaches for improving road safety.”

Their findings? “Even subtle differences in editorial patterns significantly affected readers’ attribution of blame.”

What are these editorial patterns? One is using “accident” instead of “crash,” which “obscures the preventable nature of crashes.”

The good news in Savannah is that the use of “accident” is declining due to, I think, the Savannah Police Department’s decision to change the name of the division that investigates crash scenes and largely eliminate the word from press releases.

The “Major Accident Investigation Team” is now called the “Traffic Investigation Unit.” Still, many Savannah news outlets and even one local government agency use “accident” exclusively.

Another using object-based language.

When a member of the media tells viewers that “a car jumped the curb” instead of reporting that a motorist drove over the curb, this diminishes the role of a human actor in the crash.

While the differences in wording may seem minor, Tara Goddard and her research partners found, “even relatively subtle differences in editorial patterns significantly affected readers’ interpretation of both what happened and what to do about it on nearly every measure.”

And that’s important. The role of infrastructure in improving safety for people who walk and ride bikes is indisputable.

Yet victim-blaming in reporting prevents the public from understanding and supporting the types of changes required in response to a public health emergency.

And it truly is an emergency.

Pedestrian deaths increased by 46 percent between 2009 and 2016. The fatality rate for people who ride bikes has risen 37 percent in nine years.

Even in the face of these horrifying numbers, the study’s authors point out, “there has not been a sustained and widespread public call to action” to make streets safer. This “lack of widespread public concern” is linked to how traffic safety issues are presented by the media.

Journalists who cover crashes may indeed have the ability to save lives through their reporting. In fact, the study’s authors suggest “implementing more intentional editorial patterns may be nothing less than an ethical imperative.”

Collectively, the outcome of better crash coverage is significant.

“Adopting simple improvements in crash reporting,” Goddard and her colleagues write, “offers a potentially powerful tool in shifting cultural awareness of traffic crashes as a preventable public health issue.” CS John Bennett is Safety Education Programs Manager at Georgia Bikes.

HISTORY IS often written by the victors, as the saying goes. It’s because of this that we recognize November as the month of Thanksgiving, where we feast with loved ones in remembrance of the first meeting between the English pilgrims and the Wampanoag tribe.

The feel-good part of the holiday is that the colonists and the Native Americans learned a lot from each other and shared a meal that lasted three days.

The less feel-good part of this story is, of course, the colonization of native people that followed and the inhumane ways Native Americans have been treated in this country since.

In an effort to share both sides of this complicated history, November is recognized nationally as Native American Indian Heritage Month, a designation

made in 1990 by George H.W. Bush and continued through our current administration.

Massie Heritage Center observes Native American Indian Heritage Month with a special event this Saturday, just in time for a well-rounded view of Thanksgiving.

Over the past year, Massie has been remodeling their exhibit, “American Indians of the Southeast Coast,” which traces indigenous people from our area over thousands of years. Their work is on view Saturday, along with Native American activities.

Steve Smith, Curator of Massie Heritage Center, says the remodeling consisted primarily of additional research.

“We used a lot of the original resources that were in the old exhibition, but mainly did a lot more research with a greater focus on coastal Native Americans and how their technology changed over time,” explains Smith.

The exhibit features the five periods of Native American culture as designated by archaeologists: the Paleo-Indian period, around 20,000 years ago; Archaic, 10,000 years ago; Woodland, 3,000 years ago; Mississippian, 1,000 years ago; and the historic period, which began in the 1500s. In the exhibit, Massie breaks down by period how Native American culture and technology changed.

The exhibit also focuses of the Guale tribe, who occupied the Southeastern coast for many years before colonists arrived.

“The main focus is on the Guale tribe once we get to the historic period,” says Smith. “We do have information on older cultures, but we don’t necessarily know their tribal names because there was no historic record of that. But we focus on the Guale and how their culture was impacted once the Spanish arrived in the 1500s, and also the English and the French as well.”

As Smith explains, the Guale became dependent on European trade business, were affected by foreign diseases, and began to abandon their traditional culture. The name “Guale” could be the origin of the name “Gullah,” as they both have roots in the same region, and the GullahGeechee people are a major aspect of Lowcountry culture.

Since Massie Heritage Center is part of the school system, their work often enhances the curriculum.

“For a long time, people dated the beginning of Georgia in 1733, when Oglethorpe came here with the colonists,” says Smith, “but the trend over the past several decades has been to focus more on what was going on before Oglethorpe got here.

That, of course, involves a lot of Native American history, but there’s a heightened focus on Native American history at the elementary school level.”

Smith shares that the Native American colonial history is a major component of the third-grade curriculum and that the Native American Cultures program is their most popular, so remodeling the exhibition

was a natural choice.

On Saturday, visitors can take advantage of a fee-free day and go on a guided interpretation of the exhibit through the day.

There are also Native American activities, like making a pinch pot, playing the game chunkee, and a demonstration of the wattle and daub technique of building homes.

“We also have this really awesome Native American interpreter and impersonator who will come, and he’ll do a demonstration about traditional skills among Native American like flint knapping, Native American cooking, and how they processed deer hides,” explains Smith.

“He’s highly skilled at traditional skills of Native Americans.”

The exhibition’s remodel and reveal comes at the perfect time to learn more about Native American people and their contributions beyond just the Thanksgiving story.

“I’m very happy that now we have November set aside as Native American Indian Heritage Month,” says Smith.

“There’s a greater focus on their culture and their contribution to our history.” CS

13-year-old killed in Seminole Street homicide

Savannah Police’s Criminal Investigation Unit is investigating a fatal shooting on Seminole Street that resulted in the death of a teen girl on Nov. 15.

Around 8:40 p.m. Jeremiah Seaton, 16, arrived at Central Precinct to report that he had shot his girlfriend on Seminole Street. Officers arrived in the 200 block of Seminole Street and discovered the 13-year-old girl deceased from gunshot wounds outside a residence.

“An investigation revealed that following the shooting, the suspect left the location and later arrived at the precinct to report the incident,” police report. “The suspect has been taken into custody and charged with murder. The investigation remains active and ongoing.”

Pedestrian killed in Abercorn crash

Savannah Police’s Traffic Investigation Unit is investigating an afternoon crash on Abercorn Street that resulted in the death

of a pedestrian.

“Around 3:30 p.m. officers responded to Abercorn Street at Mercy Boulevard and discovered an adult male suffering from life-threatening injuries. According to a preliminary investigation, the pedestrian was attempting to cross the eastbound lanes of Abercorn Street when he was struck by an oncoming GMC Sierra driven

by John Critz, 20, of Savannah. The pedestrian was not in a crosswalk at the time of crash,” police report.

He was transported to a hospital where he died as a result of his injuries. His identity is not being released at this time pending notification of next of kin.

The crash remains under investigation.

One of Savannah Police’s ongoing sting operations into underage alcohol sales resulted in 10 out of 15 businesses failing.

During the operation, which ran from Nov. 7-8, underage subjects visited 15 restaurants to determine if they comply with Georgia law in regard to alcohol sales.

About a year ago, Les and Paula Ansley of Mossel Bay, South Africa, stumbled upon a novel idea for a new type of spirit, which they call Indlovu Gin, the Associated Press reports. During a safari, they learned that elephants eat a wide variety of fruits and flowers, but digest less than a third of it. “As a consequence, in the elephant dung, you get the most amazing variety of these botanicals,” Les Ansley said. “Why don’t we let the elephants do the hard work of collecting all these botanicals and we will make gin from it?” Why, indeed? They collect the dung themselves, by hand, and describe their gin’s flavor as “lovely, wooded, almost spicy, earthy.” (“Indlovu” means elephant in the Zulu language.) Each bottle’s label notes where the dung was gathered and when. “Most people are very keen to actually taste it,” Ansley said. A bottle sells for about $32.

Fine Points of the Law

After losing in district court, convicted killer Benjamin Schreiber took an unusual claim to the Iowa Court of Appeals, but was shut down again on Nov. 6, according to The Washington Post. Schreiber, 66, was sentenced to a life term in 1997, but in March 2015, he suffered a medical emergency in his prison cell that caused doctors to have to restart his heart five times.

Schreiber thus claimed he had briefly “died,” and therefore he had served out his life sentence and should be released. The district judge didn’t buy it, though, saying the filing proved he was still alive, and the appeals court agreed, saying, “Schreiber is either alive, in which case he must remain in prison, or he is dead, in which case this appeal is moot.”

A Dutch university now offers students a turn in the “purification grave,” a hole dug in the ground where students can lie down and reflect on their lives for up to three hours. The student chaplaincy at Radboud University initially offered the experience in 2009 as a temporary experiment, but due to increased demand, it’s back this year, according to Vice. Students are not allowed to bring their phones or a book with them into the grave. “You can see it as a special place of meditation: below you the earth, above you the sky,” the university website explains. “You will then automatically notice what is going through your mind.” If you’re skittish about entering the grave, you can sit on the bench nearby.

FLEETWOOD MAC FANS rejoice; Rumours ATL is coming to Savannah.

The critically acclaimed tribute band, also known as Rumours - A Fleetwood Mac Tribute, has garnered a reputation for being pretty much the next best thing to Stevie Nicks and company.

They cover a lot of musical ground in their show, but they naturally focus on the Nicks/Lindsey Buckingham years — the band’s most commercially successful.

Rumours ATL’s first ever Savannah performance is set for Fri., Nov. 22 at Victory North, and we chatted with the band’s Mekenzie Jackson — their own Stevie Nicks — who ahead of the show to chat about the legacy of the band, the set list, and why the Bob Welch years matter.

It’s a bit strange to play Fleetwood Mac in the summer on the beach. You’re singing about white witches and stuff! But it’s cool— being able to do Fleetwood Mac is a town like Savannah is great because it’s a really artsy community.

I think that I may be the only one who is!

Everybody else either became fans when they were a little older, like when The Dance came out, or they’ve kind of become fans through playing the songs. And hearing them every night—not just hearing them, but knowing them.

It’s kind of like immersion therapy, where you’re around something so much that you end up doing it. I’ve watched people in the band have Fleetwood Mac grow on them because they’re around it so much.

I started listening to Fleetwood Mac when I was about five, and really got into them when I was 10—which is when The Dance came out. I’d heard it on the radio when I was younger, and when I got a little bit older my mom bought The Dance. My parents would play it in the car in the mornings.

My same story! My mom would play it on car rides when I was seven or eight.

It always kind of reminds me of driving to school. I went to a private school in fourth or fifth grade, and that’s when it came out.

It came out in the fall, and so every time I think of dreary weather, that’s what I think of.

It’s a little easier to get into them in the fall or winter. It’s a bit strange to play Fleetwood Mac in the summer on the beach [laughs]. You’re singing about white witches and stuff!

We’re really excited about coming down and playing.

The younger generations really seem to be gravitating towards them, especially over the last few years. And Stevie seems to be becoming more of a cultural icon as time goes by.

Yeah, that American Horror Story thing kind of gave her a resurgence for sure. I’d never heard “Seven Wonders” before, but

when that came out and they did “Seven Wonders,” I was like, “Oh my god! What is this song?” Now, especially when there’s a younger crowd, there’s always some girl [requesting it]. It’s so interesting to see!

Meme culture has really embraced them as well.

It’s hilarious! You’d never imagine people who are five, six, seven years younger than you listening to Fleetwood Mac. It’s so funny how that works.

When it comes to picking songs, I imagine you play all the hits. But do you take from all eras of the band as well?

When we started this band, we had no idea that there were tribute bands. We didn’t know that you could make money doing this, so we kind of put our set together almost based on their greatest hits album and then started adding stuff from there.

We’d learned all of Rumours as well, because some venues asked us to do it front to back—which is really hard to do!

But yes, we do “Dreams” and “Go Your Own Way” and all of those songs. For 2020, we’re going to start incorporating more Peter Green and Bob Welch-era songs. I think it’s necessary to kind of flirt with that. The more we play out, the more people come up and say, “You guys really should try to do Peter Green.”

We hear that a lot. The one that’s really heartwarming to hear, though, is “Hey, you guys should do some Bob Welch.”

“Hypnotized” would be amazing.

Oh, yeah! We were listening to the Bob Welch stuff and were like, “Oh my god, this guy is incredible.” His voice and his guitar playing, it really is amazing. And then you read his story, and it’s so heartbreaking.

We really should honor his music, because he was a huge part of Fleetwood Mac. CS

CORDOVAS’ BRILLIANT 60S-TINGED AMERICANA Joe Firstman talks latest band ahead of El Rocko gig

SONGWRITER, singer, and multi-instrumentalist Joe Firstman has worn a lot of hats, figuratively speaking. He started out as a solo artist with a major label deal before landing a gig as bandleader for Last Call With Carson Daly from 2005-2009.

After that job ran its course, Firstman reinvented himself with Cordovas—a band that draws on true Americana music and the country-rock of the 70s.

That band, founded by Firstman in 2011, is an extension of his storied career— which has found him experiencing nearly everything an artist can experience in the music industry. He’s traveled a lot of miles, learned a lot, and made some seriously profound art along the way. The band has garnered him some of the most critical acclaim of his musical life, and it helps that he’s joined by a group of top-notch Nashville players.

Cordovas is set for a gig at El-Rocko Lounge on Fri., Nov. 22 with the great Parker Gispert opening. Ahead of the show, we caught up with Firstman to learn more about his band and his life in music.

Prior to starting Cordovas, you had a pretty incredible solo career that led you down all sorts of paths. When this project started, did you take any lessons with you musically or otherwise that you feel informed the way the band operated?

case, when I was doing it on my own, so much of it didn’t get done. It’s a business, you know what I mean? It’d be nice if just our neighbor was going to listen to us and give us enough to create a livelihood. But as it is, we need more people than that. And I just thought that it was time to go get help.

That’s a good question. The sum total of everything that I had learned to that point was compressed and put into the new act.

And the basic motivation behind the new act was that the other thing wasn’t good enough.

From a musical standpoint, this band draws a lot from 60s and 70s roots and country rock. Do you feel that Cordovas is a representation of the kind of thing you always wanted to do?

I never did one thing in my life that I didn’t want to do, so whatever the struggles are that yours and my contemporaries had, I never had those struggles. I see a lot of guys Professionalism. Cordovas has been with ATO Records for a while now, and they seem to be a really cool, artist-friendly label as opposed to what you probably experienced as a solo artist at Atlantic years ago. Do you feel a sense of creative freedom that you maybe didn’t have before?

For us, it was never a decision to do something true or not—I only do true things, so every once in a while someone pops up and says, “I’ll give you a record deal.” That’s happened about six times in my life.

We write the best songs we can, we work harder than most bands that I know, and that’s that. It wouldn’t have mattered if [2003’s Atlantic release] The War of Women had come out on that label or that label, because it wouldn’t have changed the songs. I was unchangeable. You couldn’t move my art, and we were going to go do it.

And that’s what we’re doing today. CS

If this sounds like your idea of a wonderful time, then you just may be thrilled to know that Neighborhood Comics is hosting another such event – and this time it features esteemed, literary rock and roller Craig Finn.

Not to be confused with either Tim or Neil Finn of the celebrated New Zealand bands Split Enz and Crowded House (although you might be excused from doing so), this Finn has amassed a large and extremely loyal following for his work as the frontman and chief songwriter for the NYC-based indie-rock act The Hold Steady, and before that the Minneapolis-based indie rock group Lifter Puller.

Since 2004, Finn has released eight LPs with The Hold Steady and four solo records under his own name. He’s adored by critics and listeners alike for his intensely cathartic live performances and an unusually narrative approach to lyricism (which finds a number of recurring characters and storylines developing and at times intersecting throughout his work).

His most recent effort (2019’s solo LP “I Need a New War”) serves as the third and final installment in a trilogy of works based around imagined tales of the lives of what he’s described as everyday, “middleclass professionals” he’s encountered in his travels.

To say that Heidel is a fan of Finn’s work would be something of an understatement. To hear him tell it, he’s adored the man’s creative output since first becoming exposed to it in 2005.

“I first learned about The Hold Steady when their album “Separation Sunday” was released, probably from an indie rock blog,” Heidel explains.

“WHEN was the last time you saw a concert at a comic book store?”

That’s the unusual question Lee Heidel posed to me a few months back, just before he presented the first intimate show by an internationally acclaimed singer-songwriter at Neighborhood Comics, the small, independent shop he co-owns just South of Forsyth Park.

At the time, Heidel –who before opening the comic book store had previously brought former Archers of Loaf frontman Eric Bachmann to town for a couple of low-key, under-the-radar “house concerts” – was eagerly anticipating a nearly private appearance by beloved indie-rocker Ken Stringfellow (best known for his work as a member of The Posies, Big Star and 22 REM) that wound up nearly selling out,

folks are encouraged as well to bring pillows and/or cushions and to sit on the floor.

The presentation of the show itself is pulled back to just the basics as well. Says Heidel, “Craig performs with a simple PA for his voice and accompanies himself on acoustic guitar. That will be the only amplification, and he’ll play for a little over and hour.”

Heidel says he received “overwhelmingly positive” feedback from those who attended the Ken Stringfellow show, adding that “Being able to host talented, emotional performances in our space is a huge honor for me.”

He also says that he learned a lot from that first store concert, and based on that experience has opted to change the configuration of the space a bit, as well as altering the lighting to make for an improved experience for both the artist and the audience members.

“Yes, it’s an odd venue, to have singers perform in a comic book shop,” he allows.

“But I think that unique vibe adds to the specialness of the night.”

Even more special is the fact that Finn is not even on tour right now, and this Savannah appearance will be one of just two shows on his current calendar.

“Craig just wrapped up his European and U.S. tour with his solo band, and there were no Southern dates, which was a bummer for a big fan like myself,” explains Heidel.

“Randomly, I noticed he was booked for a solo show at a brewery in Jacksonville, Fl., so I reached out to see if he’d be willing to add on a date to that gig, and he said yes. I couldn’t be more thrilled to host one of my favorite songwriters in our intimate space.”

According to Heidel, Finn has only played Savannah once before, with The Hold Steady at River Street’s long-gone concert venue the Live Wire Music Hall.

“It was a crazy show,” he recalls. “The band was essentially on the floor with the audience. It was like a huge party.”

Heidel cautions fans not to expect a similar energy at this upcoming solo date.

“If you saw that concert, just know that the vibe at Craig’s performance at Neighborhood Comics will be very different. The shows we curate are all about the songs, the narrative and the story. That’s where the crossover comes from. Comics and graphic novels are all about storytelling.

Craig creates these epic tales of everyday people trying to live and love and survive.

Chicago-based ensemble plays Savannah State

BOMBA IS a Puerto Rican musical tradition, rooted in percussive sounds. It’s an art form that many who aren’t familiar with Puerto Rican culture may not be aware of, but Bomba Con Buya—a Chicagobased ensemble—has been spending the last several years bringing awareness to it.

The group, which features top-notch musicians from the Chicago area, is set to bring their show to Savannah State University’s Torian Auditorium on Thurs., Nov. 21 at 8 P.M. Ahead of the free performance, we talked to Bomba Con Buya co-director Roberto Perez.

I have to admit, I wasn’t very familiar with Bomba before researching it; for anyone like me who might also not be aware of what it is, can you give a brief history of the style of music?

Absolutely. Bomba is the oldest surviving genre in Puerto Rico, probably first documented in about the 1790s. It’s been around for a long time, and just because

it was documented then doesn’t mean it didn’t start before then.

It has many components to it, but the hotbed of it was in the sugarcane plantations in Puerto Rico. That’s where it was born and got a lot of momentum.

How did you discover it?

For me personally, I was at the University and was about 17 or 18 years old. Many of the people I perform with now were doing it; I didn’t necessarily grow up with the music. I had played percussion, but I was kind of taken aback. I was like, “Wow, this is our music.” From there I never really stopped, and I became involved in the Puerto Rican Culture Center. [This group] was kind of born there. Many of our members have been practicing for more than 20 years, and I think about at about 20 years.

It’s been just an amazing experience for us all.

That is really amazing. What’s the instrumentation in a group like this?

on a barrel. You have the voices; we love to harmonize. We have what I would consider to be one of the most powerful voices in Bomba music today, our lead singer Ivelisse. There are constant rhythms, and then the primo, which is the primary drummer who follows the dancers. So we also have dancers, and minor percussion.

It’s pretty raw, but also very powerful.

Wow. So what brings the ensemble to Savannah?

We’ve had the chance to travel a lot of places, and we’ve never had the chance to come to Savannah. With Savannah being part of the historical South, we want to play there. I can’t recall any time that Bomba music has been in Savannah, so we want to be a part of that. We just released our 10-year anniversary CD, and we’ve been together as a group for more than 10 years now, so we’re at a point where we do want to tour and show people what Bomba music is. CS

An all POC burlesque revue for a good cause

THE SAVANNAH Sweet Tease Burlesque Revue has been around for a long time, continually providing an inclusive platform for burlesque in the city and taking great care to give back to the community whenever possible. That philanthropy will be on full display on Fri., Nov. 22 when Sweet Tease will host its first annual Stripsgiving, an all-people of color revue emceed by Chi Chi Bonet Rita D’LaVane Sherrington.

Attendees are asked to bring a non-perishable food or personal item, which will be donated to those in need this holiday season. The show will take place at Club One and will feature a lineup of local performers including Marquee Von Fister, Coco Rose’, and Lavender Haze (among many others).

We chatted with performer and producer Rita D’LaVane ahead of Stripsgiving 28 to learn more about the event.

Is this the first Stripsgiving event you’ve done?

Yes, this is the first one we’ve produced. It’s the second all-POC burlesque revue that we’ve ever produced.

What was the impetus for doing an event like this?

I think the idea just sort of came out of a need to want to have an event that could raise awareness for people who struggle within our community. So often, I sit and realize how much of a draw burlesque can be and how successful it’s become.

There’s always a part of me that says, “We’ve got to use these powers for good.”

Within the idea of promoting ourselves, what are we putting back into the community for all that we’re given as far as making money and surviving as performers? I think it’s important to use any way that you can gather means for people within gathering attention for yourself.

These events may bring people out who might not have ever been to a burlesque show. Is that something you think about

when you’re putting these kinds of events together?

100 percent! There’s a lot of us at this point, and a lot of people who aren’t necessarily performers get a preconceived notion about what they think burlesque is. So being able to target certain people and show them what it is is always very important. In showing them, you get the opportunity to show them within your own vision of what you think it should be.

The idea of doing an all-POC revue comes out of the need to provide visibility for people of color.

Within the industry worldwide, there is such a small percentage of us.

Thicc Flair To give you a small idea of what that’s like—there are a lot of discussion groups among performers online, and among one particular group that includes performers of all backgrounds there are 5,500 members. Within a group that is for people of color, there are less than 500 in that group.

I’d been thinking about doing something in November for a while, because there’s not a whole lot to do that’s around Thanksgiving. I think the reason why is because Savannah is a very transient city, and there aren’t a lot of people who are from here or have family here. But there are a lot of people who live here, and it’s becoming more of a trend for people to want to stay closer to home rather than travel.

I also thought we can tie in the feeling that as people of color, we consider each other family in a very deep and spiritual way. So we’re trying to give, even when we might not have much; which is something we’ve all grown up on as a foundation.

You mention preconceived notions—what do you think the biggest misconception is about burlesque?

Well, especially because we’re also an agency that does client work, a lot of people see burlesque as something that is predominately white, thin women. And often times when client requests come through, people will ask for a certain type of person that they want to hire. I feel like that’s the opposite of what the industry actually is.

We strive to be inclusive, and especially just because that’s not how the world actually is. Representation is important. Visibility is important. CS

mostly situational, not jokey, but presents itself as this high-fantasy sword and sorcery story. All the tropes are still there, but they’re just sort of inverted. You’re on the side of these dopey, sympathetic skeleton guys who are just trying to get their own thing done and not get kicked apart.

Now that Over the Garden Wall is out, what are you working on?

I’ve gone back and started working on Bonemen. It’s a slower process than I imagined, because it’s a pretty big disparity between Over the Garden Wall and Bonemen. I had to relearn how to draw the way I was before. Another thing about the difference there was the scheduling, because when I was working with an editor, I had super tight deadlines and I was still working a full-time job to make ends meet. I was spending six to eight hours on a page and trying to get one done every single day by working before and after my job, as opposed to spending three days to a week per page on Bonemen because I’d post it on a weekly basis or just whenever I felt like it because I had no deadlines.

[For Over the Garden Wall] I had to learn how to stop doing things in a tedious, ornate way and learn how to do them quickly and efficiently. But when I got back to working on Bone Men, I was like, “Oh, I think I actually don’t remember how to do things this detailed anymore,” so it took me a few months to get back on my feet on that front.

CELEBRATE Local Comic Shop Day this Saturday with a local comic book artist, John Golden.

Golden is the line artist on the recently released “Over the Garden Wall: Circus Friends,” a graphic novel that’s a spinoff of the Cartoon Network series special of the same name.

In addition to this work, Golden also creates his own comic series, Bonemen, that he releases online and takes to conventions.

On Saturday, Golden will be signing copies of “Over the Garden Wall: Circus Friends” and doing sketch cards, as well as offering original sketches.

We caught up with Golden last week.

Tell me about your involvement with Over the Garden Wall.

What’s that process like?

The formal term for what I did is the line artist, which includes doing pencils and inks. Basically, I draw from a script from the writer, and once I’m done with that, it’s handed off to a colorist who colors it and then, in turn, hands it off to a letterer who put sin speech bubbles.

What process do you prefer?

How much creative control do you personally have over this project?

As the artist, you have a pretty good amount of creative control because you effectively adapt to what looks like a movie script, but instead of reading it, it’s like, Page One, Panel One, and instructions like what’s happening and what the dialogue is.

It’s your job as the artist to create the setting and characters and decide how they’re going to act out the scenes you’re supposed to create.

What other work do you do besides this project?

Other than Over the Garden Wall, which is my first comic published on a wide scale, I have my own comic, Bonemen, which I write and draw. I publish that online as a web comic in addition to printed versions I sell at conventions. I do my own thing on the side. Boom has contacted me a little here and there about doing other types of

I like the process of taking my time and really figuring out how to draw stuff, which was originally the purpose of Bonemen.

When I started it, I had no intention of finishing it; it was just padding for a portfolio.

But people liked the story that I’d make up on the spot when they asked me what it was about. They liked the way it looked, so I sort of started leaning into it. But I do like working on something where I can take my time and learn as I go. When I was working on Over the Garden Wall, I did learn a few things, but it was more of an exercise in seeing how fast I could go with all the things I learned how to do previously.

I like to create stories, so sometimes I like to write and draw, but Jonathan Case is a super talented writer, so working from his script just sort of sped up the process.

Writing and drawing is a lot different than writing or drawing. What I typically do when I write and draw something is I’ll think about it while I’m drawing it. It happens almost simultaneously, as opposed to creating a script for the entire comic and then drawing the entire comic based off the strip.

That sounds kind of like finals week in school.

Tell me more about Bonemen.

It’s like finals week, but like six months I started it when I was in college. Basically, straight of finals week. It was difficult to it’s a high-fantasy satire, so it’s like a satire do. It feels like a job, but it’s still fun to do of Conan the Barbarian and Prince Valiant regardless. CS and all those old-school-style fantasy comics. The idea is the main characters are the LOCAL COMIC SHOP DAY skeletons that usually just show up and get Sat., Nov. 23 kicked apart without a second thought. Over the Garden Wall was a Halloween special that Cartoon Network ran in 2015, and it wound up being really popular. It’s a great show; I always recommend it to people who don’t know what the book is. The show is limited to a miniseries as far as the original material goes, but since there was a really big fan base that typically watches it yearly, Boom, the publisher that works with a lot of Cartoon Network’s IPs as far as adapting them to comics, actually produces a pretty large amount of Over the Garden Wall comics in addition to the one I did.

There’s still an ongoing comic series that comes out as individual issues as opposed to a graphic novel, like mine, and a number of different artist and writers work on the product as a comic, which is pretty cool.

Five years of change

W.W. Law photography collection goes on view at the Savannah Cultural Arts Center

OF ALL media, photography is the truest to life: it captures a moment just as it is.

Because of that truth, photography holds a lot of power, particularly in the potential to change minds and perception.

Photos taken in an important moment in history carry even more power, and that’s what the City of Savannah hopes to accomplish with its latest exhibition at the Savannah Cultural Arts Center.

“Five Years That Changed Savannah Forever: Reflecting on the Civil Rights Movement Through the W.W. Law Photograph Collection” goes on view Nov. 21.

The City of Savannah’s Director of Municipal Archives, Luciana Spracher, has been working on this idea for a while through other city-led projects.

“We’ve been working on the W.W. Law collection for a couple years now,” she 30 explains. “It’s a very large collection of a

lot of different classes and components to it. We’ve done a couple different exhibits exploring different parts of the collection.

I’ve been wanting to do an exhibit that really utilized both the photograph collection and focused on the civil rights movement and W.W. Law’s involvement in that.”

Law’s full collection of over 4,000 photographs, taken from 1868 to 2002, was curated for the exhibit by Spracher and former Savannah mayor Dr. Otis Johnson, who was a part of the civil rights movement.

“I asked Dr. Johnson to be a guest cocurator on this exhibition for us,” explains Spracher, “and to help select the images that should be in this exhibition. Dr. Johnson had a monumental task to look at that collection and focus in on the civil rights movement in Savannah.”

Of the photos, Johnson chose the years 1960-1965 to highlight. The exhibition focuses on the work of the Savannah Branch of the NAACP, in which Law was very involved.

“He was really involved with the Youth Council, and a lot of the images are actually looking at how young people in the

youth were leading the movement in Savannah,” says Spracher. “I think for young people—16, 18, 22 years old—this might be a really interesting exhibit to show them how they can enact change.”

Law was an important figure for our city and in the civil rights movement. Since his passing in 2002, the city has worked hard to honor and remember his work. He was also the protégé of another important Savannahian and civil rights leader Dr. Ralph Mark Gilbert, who helped revitalize the Savannah branch of the NAACP. “Mr. Law became involved with the NAACP through the council through one of his mentors, Dr. Ralph Mark Gilbert, who our civil rights museum is named for,” explains Spracher. “The NAACP is a very old organization, but really had a rebirth in Savannah in the 1940s.”

An important distinction Spracher makes on the time period is that the fiveyear period selected is just indicative of the most turbulence in the movement.

“There was a lot going on before and after. There were streetcar boycotts back around the turn of the century that were really important,” she adds. “This is just

part of the continuum of efforts on the part of the Black community for equality and justice in Savannah, but these are really pivotal moments, particularly for the NAACP’s effort.”

At the Nov. 21 opening of the exhibition, Johnson will speak on a variety of topics, from the photographs to his own personal experience in Savannah’s civil rights movement. It’s a timely reminder that the civil rights movement was just a few decades ago, not far removed like other parts of our history.

“We’re still living and learning and dealing with these issues. They’re not done,” Spracher says. “I think it’s still timely to discuss what happened in the 1960s today.

There will be young people where this is so off their radar, and there will be other people who, this was yesterday for them.” CS

1. Tell me about how you got started with the work for “Interregnum.”

Usually in Savannah, you see my landscapes, but I’d been talking to Peter [Roberts, of Location Gallery] about reintroducing my more abstract work. Landscape is so accessible for people. They can look at a landscape and they love it, and it can be personal and emotional. But they’re not as challenging for me as abstracts. I like the challenge of abstract.

2. Why is abstract more challenging for you than landscape?

You’re basically starting from a blank canvas. You make a few marks on it and from that point on, you let the paint interactions lead you on whatever that particular journey is.

I did have a couple themes in these; I used a lot of very fine linear work, and this idea of openings and passageways and doors. My main thing is that people seem so divided now, and I think the problem is that we all have a lot of chaos inside us, and then we have this organized part of ourselves. We tend to want to present just the organized part, because that seems so solid and acceptable. What I’m trying to do in these paintings is present that chaos and order at the same time, because they can both be beautiful together. You don’t have to change your chaos into something organized. You can embrace it.

3. What was your life like before coming to Savannah?

I was in a Catholic monastery.I started

out in Harlem, then moved to Rochester, then moved to Boston. It was the early 70s, and the college I went to was run by this congregation, and they did a lot of inner city work. Which, if you think about the 70s and what was happening in the cities, that seemed like a very good use of the skills I had. My parents had left the city in the early 50s because it was getting rough.

We weren’t suburban, we were more rural—we were on an RFD route. They had tried to remove us from that, but seeing what was happening in the Vietnam War, what can I do?

I’d taught art on different levels, but my major focus was English and theology until we got to the 80s and the schools I was teaching in realized they had no arts programs at all. They wanted me to start them. I actually moved through four schools and either started an art program or built on an art program that was falling apart. At one school, three were 3,000 students and eight people taking art. By the time I left, there were 250 kids taking art, and the school’s population had gone down to 1,100.

My philosophy on teaching is: give them the tools you want them to work with and after they’ve experimented a while, they’ll have questions, and then they’re ready to learn. Sometimes the experiments –what would have been mistakes if you were being very technical—turn out to be really interesting ideas that they and the paint created. That’s where I came up with letting the paint talk to me instead of me telling the paint what to do. It’s the chaos and the order.

4. Why did you begin painting landscapes?

People asked me to. They’re not what I showed when I was first here, but people really liked them and bought them, and that’s a great incentive. They get harder

to do as you do them, because you can do a mental switch to where you’re not creating with paint, you’re using paint to make a picture. For me and what I do, once you switch from letting the paint guide you to you guiding the paint, you’re switching the whole direction of your work. That’s why these are actually quite difficult: they’re easier to execute, harder to create.

A lot of people come here because it’s a beautiful place. For some people this long, level horizon and the consistency is very calming, spiritual, peaceful. It has this duality, that double purpose.

5. What direction is your work

taking?

I’ve been continuing the thread from “Interregnum.” It’s about the same thing, about organizing and the unknown and being drawn to other places, what would that mean. It deals with those kinds of issues we all have. I look at other people’s work about the same themes and how they’re visually handling it.

We’re trying to work our way through this social and political situation. We’re thinking about it. Yes, there are people and things I disapprove of or don’t want in my life, but I don’t see it as I have to change and make you like me. I can show you who I am and maybe you can see some of yourself in what I’m showing you.

I came from what would appear to be

a very organized, happy, productive situation that, within, was not that at all. My father was an alcoholic, my mother had her issues, they had 10 kids. It looked perfect, but inside, it was not.

It’s the same thing in society, too. If you’re gay and it’s not apparent, people actually reveal things about their attitude towards you and they don’t know it’s about you. It’s people in your own family.

Dealing with my sexuality in that way, that’s why I’m glad to be at the LGBT Center because I grew up with those issues.

Indirectly I was told about myself, so [art is] a whole way of exploring that for me.

I’m hoping that, especially in that place, it would resonate with some people. CS

ARTIST Daniel E. Smith believes that each of us have two sides: our chaotic side and our organized side.

That belief informs much of his work, particularly in the show “Interregnum,” which is on display through this week at the LGBT Center.

A stylistic departure for Smith, who gravitates towards landscape paintings, the abstract works in “Interregnum” are a talented, colorful commentary on existence.

We spoke with Smith last week.

HAVE YOU ever eaten at a restaurant and found tiny little leaves resting beautifully atop your finished dish?

Have you gone to the grocery store and spotted a container of what looks like miniature lettuce sitting next to the herb section?

For many non-chefs, they’re left wondering what in the world they’re eating.

In most grocery stores around town, those greens are wilted and lackluster, and other than finding them on a store shelf (on a rare occasion), it is almost impossible to find the miniature greens.

I’m referring to microgreens, the greens of vegetables that are harvested just before the vegetable’s true leaves develop. Microgreens grow between the sprout stage of a plant and the baby green stage of a plant.

The superfood is loved by food enthusiasts because they are extremely nutritional and packed with delicious fresh flavor.

There is one local farm that is helping give access to microgreens for Savannah and its neighboring cities: Ebenezer Greens. The urban farm started as a project for owners Angie and Chris Mee and 34 has grown into our area’s local supplier for

As she gives me a tour of the farm, Angie explains, “After each tray is done and harvested, we compost everything. We have compost piles in the back. We wash and sterilize the trays after each round, and my kids help with that too.”

If you have ever tasted a microgreen as part of a composed dish, it is likely you do not recognize the strong individual flavor the tiny plant possesses. Each variety is like a compact bite of the plant it comes from.

The beet microgreens taste just like a raw, fresh beet straight out of the ground.

The same can be said with almost every variety of microgreen. It’s why chefs and fancy restaurants love to include them on their menus.

Microgreens are not just a produce for the snooty and healthy. Ebenezer Farm believes that more than anyone else.

“We want to bring microgreens to the people, not just restaurants. We want people to realize that this could be part of their daily diet, and it is should be because it is a superfood. Some of them contain up to forty times more nutrients than the vegetable, so these little greens have much higher concentrations of all the vitamins and antioxidants that you get from the bigger vegetables,” Angie tells me.

THERE’S NO shortage of notable “alternative cinema” events taking place over the next seven days or so. As always, Film Scene is your weekly advance guide to the myriad of options available for adventurous viewers seeking something outside of the miasma of boilerplate, corporate multiplex programming.

Please do your best to attend one or more of these worthwhile screenings, and in doing so, support the diversification of cultural experience in the greater Savannah area.

We start on Nov. 20 on the Southside of town, where the Ogeechee Theatre inside the Student Union Building on the Armstrong campus of Georgia Southern University presents a public showing of the 2014 Emmy-winning documentary “The Homestretch.”

Originally seen on PBS-TV’s terrific series “Independent Lens,” this 90-minute doc follows three intelligent and ambitious Chicago-area teenagers as they work hard to complete their education. The rub?

They’re also homeless, and each struggles mightily with such debilitating issues as the trauma of being abused and/or abandoned as a child.

The film follows these kids into adulthood 35 and provides an eye-opening glimpse

at the travails besetting even bright and hardworking young people in contemporary inner city life. Showtime is 7 p.m., and admission is free to all. If you’re not familiar with the layout of the Armstrong Campus, I encourage you to arrive a little early to locate the Student Union and find free parking.

That same night, downtown at the Sentient Bean Coffeehouse next to Brighter Day Natural Foods on Forsyth Park, the Psychotronic Film Society’s long-running, award-winning Wednesday night series of underappreciated feature films from around the world continues with a rare public screening of the 1971 murder mystery “The Fifth Cord,” which stands as a little-known yet beautifully made Italian thriller (or “giallo”).

Featuring haunting cinematography by the legendary, Oscar-winning cameraman Vittorio Storaro (“Apocalypse Now,” “The Sheltering Sky,” “The Last Tango in Paris”) and a score by the iconic composer Ennio Morricone (“The Good, The Bad and The Ugly”), it stars charismatic leading man Franco Nero (whose 78th birthday this event commemorates), best known for starring in the original 1966 Spaghetti Western “Django.”

This restored widescreen print of the film is uncut and in spoken English. 8 p.m. showtime, with a full vegetarian and vegan menu available and discounts on craft beer and organic wine during the film.

Heading out to Tybee Island, the historic Tybee Post Theater offers up exclusive area engagements of two of the year’s most critically acclaimed dramas.

First up is “Judy,” a biopic of celebrated (yet ultimately rather doomed) American actress and singer Judy Garland, that deals with the final days of her troubled life.

Centered around a series of actual stage performances Garland gave late in her storied career, the picture has been faulted for relying on a rather hackneyed narrative approach.

However, its star Renée Zellweger has received almost universal praise for what has been called an extremely uncanny and accurate depiction of the idiosyncratic Hollywood legend. “Judy” screens at 7 p.m. on Nov. 21 and 24, with a 3 p.m. matinee on Nov. 24. Opening night’s show costs a couple bucks more than the rest, but includes your choice of a drink (beer, wine, sodas or water).

Then, on Nov. 27, in what stands as something of a coup for this single-screen, 200-seat venue, they’ve snagged the Savannah area’s sole engagement of fabled filmmaker Martin Scorsese’s latest gangster epic, “The Irishman,” which many are calling one of the finest motion pictures of his long and storied career.

The picture, which is based on a 2004 novel and has been in development for well over a decade, is the story of a truck driver (played by Robert De Niro) who winds up playing a deadly role in organized crime, and ultimately interacting with the infamous, real-life Teamster Jimmy Hoffa (played by Al Pacino). It also marks the long-awaited return to the screen of esteemed character actor Joe Pesci.

Financed by Netflix, it’s being given an extremely limited theatrical window, and, owing to Netflix’s contentious business relationships with most of the country’s cinema chains, is only being booked at independently operated venues such as the non-profit Tybee Post. The film runs three-and-a-half hours, so be prepared to settle in for a long haul (albeit one that virtually everyone who has seen the film says is absolutely worth it).

Kudos to the Post for bringing this picture to town (the next closest screening is well over an hour’s drive away in S.C.).

Showtimes are at 7 p.m. on Nov. 27, 29 and 30, plus 3 p.m. matinees on Nov. 29 and 30.

Looking out to the nearby city of Springfield, Ga., their historic Mars Theatre kicks off an extended engagement of Disney’s brand-new CGI animated kids musicalfantasy “Frozen 2,” from the same team that created the blockbuster first film in that growing franchise.

Many of the same voice actors reprise their roles in this sequel as well, including Kristen Bell and Adele Dazeem. 7 p.m. showtimes on Nov. 21 through 23 and 28 through 30, plus 3 p.m. matinees on Nov. 24 and Dec. 1.

Moving back downtown, on Nov. 22 at the City’s Cultural Arts Center near the Civic Center, local film organization CinemaSavannah continues its occasional series of first-run and recently released foreign and independent features with an exclusive area screening of “Synonyms,” a new and highly controversial political drama about ultra-nationalism.

A French and Israeli co-production which won the coveted Golden Bear Prize for Best Film at the most recent Berlin Film Fest, it’s the story of an Israeli man who relocates to France and dives headfirst into that country’s culture in an aggressive attempt to flee from the chaos and political discord in his own homeland.

Hailed by critics as a daring look at the factious nature of our world today and the deep toll it can take on individual psyches, “Synonyms” won two Israeli Academy Awards, and is said to provoke extreme responses in viewers.

Heading back the Southside, on Nov. 23, the AMC Savannah 11 multiplex offers a high-def presentation of a new production of groundbreaking minimalist composer Philip Glass’ three-act opera from 1983, “Akhnaten,” courtesy of The Metropolitan Opera House.

This three-and-a-half hour show includes acrobats and jugglers alongside musicians and vocalists, all of which are used to depict a contemporary reimagining of the life and religious beliefs of the Egyptian pharaoh of the same name. This Met production is a revival of the English National Opera and LA Opera’s co-production which first debuted in the spring of 2016, and won a 2017 Olivier Award.

The final installment in a trilogy of works by Glass (which include “Einstein on the Beach” and “Satyagraha” about, respectively, Albert Einstein and Mahatma Gandhi), it’s meant as a tribute to key historical figures whose strong inner visions manifest substantial changes in the times in which they lived.

Much of the text is taken from original, historical sources and then repurposed to fit Glass’ trademark compositional style, which leans heavily on repetition and trancelike musical and vocal structures.

This presentation is subtitled in English.

Showtimes are 12:55 p.m. on Nov. 23 and again at 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 4.

And finally, on Nov. 24 at the Savannah LGBT Center, the latest installment of The Look Back (the area’s only Queer Cinema series, jointly curated by yours truly and community activist and drag performer Max Arnzen of the House of Gunt) will occur. This ongoing, monthly series of provocative or historically noteworthy examples of LGBTQ-related filmmaking takes place on the last Sunday of each month in the intimate confines of the center’s meeting room (which seats right around 30).

Admission and concessions (snacks and soft drinks) are free, with voluntary donations of any kind cheerfully accepted to help ameliorate the costs associated with putting on such a public film series.

This month’s selection is “Normal,” the outstanding 2003 family drama based on the play “Looking for Normal,” and starring Jessica Lange and Tom Wilkinson as a Midwestern couple, married for 25 years, who must grapple with the fallout from the husband’s unexpected disclosure that he intends to transition from male to female.

The film, which was well-received at the Sundance Film Fest, initially premiered on HBO, and went on to receive three Golden Globe nominations and six Primetime Emmy Awards, winning one Emmy.

It’s an odd and oddly compelling motion picture featuring standout performances from all concerned. Showtime is 7 p.m.

FORD V FERRARI

OOO (3 out of four) It doesn’t quite match the rush provided

by Rush, but Ford v Ferrari nevertheless qualifies as a good time for those who like to witness life in the fast lane.

If Ron Howard’s 2013 drama was primarily a movie about men who raced cars (in this case, Formula 1 aces Niki Lauda and James Hunt), James Mangold’s Ford v Ferrari ultimately is as much about the cars as the characters.

In fact, the Ford GT40 emerges as such a prominent player — and receives so many loving close-ups — that it wouldn’t be surprising if 20th Century Fox mounted a Best Supporting Actor Oscar campaign on its behalf.

As the title clearly indicates, Ford v Ferrari looks at the rivalry between the two auto giants, one that reared its head during the 1960s. While the cars produced by Italy’s Enzo Ferrari (Remo Gerone) were viewed as sleek and sexy beasts that routinely won the prestigious Le Mans race in France, the assembly-line vehicles manufactured by Henry Ford II (Tracy Letts) were seen as square, old-fashioned, and likely to come in third in a race against the tortoise and the hare.

Ford Vice President Lee Iacocca (Jon Bernthal) convinces his boss to purchase Ferrari to boost the company’s image, but when the Italian outfit reneges on the deal and bolts to Fiat, an outraged Ford decides that he’ll beat Enzo Ferrari at his own game.

Determined to win Le Mans — something no American car company had ever done — the Ford organization seeks the input of automobile designer Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon), a former driver who had to retire due to health issues.

As the only American to win Le Mans (while driving for Britain’s Aston Martin), Shelby’s knowledge is considered invaluable, and he enlists Ken Miles (Christian Bale), a British driver/mechanic undergoing hard times, to not only help him construct a new car but also to race it. But Miles’ quick temper and unwillingness to play by the rules draws the ire of Ford flunky Leo Beebe (Josh Lucas), who does everything to get the volatile Brit kicked off the team.

The true-life story behind Ford v Ferrari is such a natural for the screen that it’s not surprising Hollywood had been eyeing it for at least a decade. Many of the dramatic developments (such as the conclusion of the Le Mans race) really did occur, and the performances by Damon, Bale, Letts and an imaginatively cast Bernthal lend weight to the figures they portray (incidentally, Iacocca, later a CEO extraordinaire, passed away just this past July, at the age of 94).

There’s also an ample amount of humor in the picture, much of it courtesy of the

two above-the-title A-listers (NASCAR fans are sure to bristle when it’s opined that driving that circuit requires no skill since it’s just “four hours of turning left”).

That’s not to say the movie doesn’t occasionally take the easy path of broad strokes — Beebe is a villain of cartoonish dimensions, and the Ferrari driver who emerges as Miles’ main competitor on the tracks glowers with the single-minded intensity of a Bond henchman. Yet even when it lapses into formula, Ford v Ferrari is so energetically staged that it’s easy to admit that the formula won.

THE GOOD LIAR

OOO Here’s the thing about The Good Liar, the new adults-only movie featuring the dynamic duo of Helen Mirren and Ian McKellen. If you’ve seen the trailer, you probably know the twist. If you sit through the first half-hour, you probably can deduce where it’s heading.

But like many a sturdy thriller, there’s more than meets the eye, and before it’s over, the film will have deepened into something more than just a story about a con man trying to bilk an elderly woman out of her money.

Writer-director Bill Condon, who has worked with McKellen on three previous occasions (most notably 1998’s Gods and Monsters, for which Condon won a scripting Oscar), has taken Nicholas Searle’s novel and turned it into a gift for his frequent leading man. McKellen plays Roy Courtnay, a seasoned con man who operates in tandem with his friend Vincent (Downton Abbey’s Jim Carter). In their various stings, whether it’s on businessmen or lonelyhearts, Roy takes the lead while Vincent operates as a financier — this system has allowed them to bilk numerous people out of their fortunes.

Their latest target is Betty McLeish (Mirren), a widow whose assets are worth close to a staggering three million pounds.

The plan is for Roy to woo Betty (who has recently placed an ad on a dating site) to the point that she trusts him more than anyone else.

Enter Vincent as Roy’s legal advisor, who will convince Betty to pool her wealth with that of Roy and move the combined amount into an offshore account. Before Betty can blink, Roy will empty the account and disappear from the scene, ready to move onto his next victim. Only this con proves to be a bit more complicated, largely due to the presence of Betty’s suspicious grandson Steven (Russell Tovey).

Although McKellen has played villains before, few have been as dark and dangerous as the one he essays in The Good Liar.

The expected easy charm and twinkly demeanor are very much in evidence in the scenes in which Roy is courting Betty, but they disappear the nanosecond they part company, melting away to reveal a stonefaced sullenness and a casual air of evil usually associated only with serial killers and Gestapo officers.

The story takes a few hairpin turns as it heads toward its denouement, and, admittedly, some of it veers into preposterousness. In other words, this is the sort of thriller where certain situations must unfold in a precise manner for everything to work out as the script requires. That’s often a crippling deficiency in a thriller, but not here. With formidable performances by Mirren and McKellen and a plot that intensifies in meaning and motive, The Good Liar takes a gamble that pays off handsomely.

OOO In 1942, the Ernst Lubitsch masterpiece To Be or Not to Be opened to mixed reviews and audience indifference, as many critics and patrons objected to the idea of making a comedy about the Nazi invasion of Poland.

In 1968, Mel Brooks’ Oscar-winning classic The Producers also debuted to mixed reviews, with several scribes and viewers offended at the comedic portrayals of both Jews and Nazis (Roger Ebert reported that one woman confronted Brooks and told him that “your movie is vulgar,” to which the comic legend famously replied, “Lady, it rose below vulgarity”).

Cut to 2019, when Taika Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit premieres to mixed reviews (audience reaction is still a work in progress at this stage), with ample critics objecting to its satiric treatment of the Nazi menace. Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose.

There IS potentially objectionable content in Jojo Rabbit, but it has nothing to do with treating Nazis in a comedic manner.

Rather, it has to do with treating one Nazi (played by Sam Rockwell) in a sympathetic manner, with the character ultimately revealing a selfless and even heroic side.

In Trump’s America, this smacks a bit too much of the “good people on both sides” comment that the presidential putz lovingly directed at his fellow white supremacists. Aside from this misstep, though, the comedy in Jojo Rabbit is good to go, with Waititi using humor in the same way as Lubitsch and Brooks before him.

The plot centers on Jojo (Roman Griffin Davis), a young boy hoping to become a good little Nazi. He accepts the concept of Jews as horned demons, and his imagery friend is an imbecilic version of Adolf Hitler (Waititi). But his distorted worldview starts to crumble after he learns that his mother (Scarlett Johansson), a German who despise the Nazis, is hiding a young Jewish girl named Elsa (Thomasin McKenzie, the breakout star of 2018’s Leave No Trace) in their attic. As Jojo gets to know Elsa and realizes she’s a normal and decent person, he begins to question everything he’s been taught, particularly by his own personal Adolf.

Whereas the comedy of To Be or Not to Be and The Producers was largely rooted in slapstick and dialogue, Jojo Rabbit finds Waititi taking a more surreal approach, with many scenes shot in a manner slightly removed from reality. In further contrast, the drama is also more harsh than that explored in the previous pictures, with one shocking death puncturing the proceedings late in the game.

With its inclination to bolt from comedy to drama and back again at whiplash speed, 38 it’s easy to see why Jojo Rabbit would upset

many. Yet those inclined to movies with a dark comic bent should find it to be a rather savory stew.

OO It’s definitely the minority opinion, but aside from the training-wheel pictures that preceded 1956’s The Killing, 1980’s The Shining might be the weakest of all movies directed by Stanley Kubrick. That’s not a slam at all — I’ve seen the movie countless times and always find something to admire — it’s just that this adaptation of the Stephen King novel doesn’t inspire the same level of admiration and excitement as Dr. Strangelove, Paths of Glory or any of Kubrick’s other bruising beauties.

I only bring this up to demonstrate that any displeasure toward Doctor Sleep isn’t because I hold The Shining up in such rapturous regard that any sequel would seem lacking. On the contrary, the movie largely fails on its own terms.

Opening approximately three decades after the horrors of The Shining and then leaping forward a few more years, Doctor Sleep follows the now-adult Dan Torrance (Ewan McGregor) as he continues to cope with the events that occurred at the Overlook Hotel during his childhood — namely, that his dad went crazy and tried to axe everyone in sight. Taking the sage advice of the ghost of Dick Hallorann (Carl Lumbly) to compartmentalize his inner demons while also surviving a battle with alcoholism, Dan now works at a hospice, where his ability to use his “shine” to comfort dying patients have earned him the nickname of “Doctor Sleep.”

Over the years, Dan has found that he shares a mental link with Abra Stone (Kyliegh Curran), a young girl whose shine is more powerful than that harbored by just about anyone else who bears this blessing/curse. Abra’s energy is so strong, in fact, that she draws the attention of the True Knot, basically a group of psychic vampires who kill those with the shine and inhale the escaping energy in order to extend their own lives (not unlike those Highlanders of film and TV fame). The leader of the True Knot is Rose the Hat

(Rebecca Ferguson), and she’s the one who first senses the presence of little Abra.

Writer-director Mike Flanagan has stated that Doctor Sleep is meant as a combination of the finer qualities of King’s two novels and Kubrick’s singular film.

Regardless of his best intentions, his cinematic endeavor turns out to be a largely flavorless stew. Its only noteworthy ingredient is Rose the Hat — she’s an original and unsettling character, and, as played by Ferguson, she’s so disturbing on her own that she actually loses some of her menace on those frequent occasions when the FX crew adds a glowing crimson sheen to her eyes. The other members of the True Knot are far less threatening, coming across less as avatars of unspeakable evil and more as burned-out roadies still loyally following their favorite ‘70s band after all these decades.

Still, the scenes involving the True Knot at least steer clear of the influence of The Shining — both King’s and Kubrick’s.

There’s nothing wrong with McGregor’s performance as Dan except that it doesn’t deep-dive far enough into the character’s tortured mind. Whether that’s more a failing on the part of Flanagan or McGregor is uncertain, but the actor feels more like a visitor to the role than an actual occupant.

Meanwhile, the decision to recreate scenes from the 1980 movie prove to be disastrous — comparing the artistry of Flanagan and Kubrick does the former no favors — and the picture finally jumps the tracks during its final stretch, when the action moves to the Overlook Hotel. These sequences, which feel like an afterthought when compared to the rhythm established throughout the earlier chunk of the film, are not only completely devoid of tension, but they’re also missing something even more crucial: the atmosphere that in The Shining was so thick, it was practically a character unto itself. In Doctor Sleep, there is no comparable atmosphere. It’s been replaced with a thin veneer of flopsweat, ably demonstrating that all work and no coherent vision makes for a movie that, if not exactly dull, could still use a little more shine.

OO The battle of Midway was one of the great American victories during World War II, cited as a key skirmish in altering the course of the war in the Pacific. Why, then, has Hollywood been unable to give this historic event the motion picture it deserves? Even the rumble between the Jets and the Sharks in West Side Story carries more dramatic urgency than what’s seen in the two major Midway movies to date.

If there’s one thing the 2019 version of Midway has over the 1976 version of Midway, it’s that it serves as a more accurate historical record. The ’76 edition boasted of an all-star cast (Heston! Fonda! Mifune!

Mitchum! Even Selleck!) and a Sensurround presentation, but it suffered from too much stock footage and too much time spent on dreary subplots involving fictional characters (particularly Heston’s Captain Matt Garth). This new edition at least keeps its focus on the actual participants and their heroic deeds.

But at what price? All of the famous figures —Nimitz (Woody Harrelson), Doolittle (Aaron Eckhart), Halsey (Dennis Quaid), and more — are on hand, but scripter Wes Tooke turns them into token matinee characters, exhibiting few characteristics save for those closely attributed to the actors playing them (Harrelson’s slyness, Eckhart’s confidence, Quaid’s growl). As supposedly dynamic individuals, they’re so thinly drawn that the stars might as well be playing any Tom, Dick or Halsey. As for the co-leads, Patrick Wilson is just fine as intelligence officer Edwin Layton, but Ed Skein’s broad turn as heroic pilot Dick Best is more irritating than inspiring.

Director Roland Emmerich’s 1996 smash Independence Day won an Oscar for its special effects, but, since then, the visuals in his films seem to be getting worse, not better. Midway is naturally packed with all manner of bombs bursting in air, land and sea, but most of these action sequences fail not only because Emmerich treats them as a jumble of sound and fury and square-jawed machismo (the wartime messiness seen in Dunkirk and Saving Private Ryan rarely makes an appearance here) but also because the effects are only intermittently convincing. Most of these CGI sequences look so arcade-ready in their unconvincing slickness that it’s a wonder viewers don’t have to insert quarters every half-hour to keep the movie going. CS

Taurus social critic Bertrand Russell won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1950.

He’s regarded as the founder of analytic philosophy and one of the twentieth century’s premier intellectuals. But he went through a rough patch in 1940. He was adjudged “morally unfit” to accept his appointment as a professor at the City College of New York. The lawsuit that banned him from the job described him as being “libidinous, lustful, aphrodisiac, and irreverent.” Why? Simply because of his liberated opinions about sexuality, which he had conscientiously articulated in his book *Marriage and Morals*. In our modern era, we’re more likely to welcome libidinous, lustful, aphrodisiac, and irreverent ideas if they’re expressed respectfully, as Russell did. With that as a subtext, I invite you to update and deepen your relationship with your own sexuality in the coming weeks.
