ONE of the most popular pastimes in Savannah is complaining about the local media.

Whether it’s blaming us for the outcome of local elections or gleefully sharing some minor typo on social media, we’re all a target for ridicule or abuse at some point or another.

Now, I’m a strong believer in the “if you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen” philosophy when it comes to journalism, — and pretty much everything else — so I mostly take it in stride.

If you can’t take it, you shouldn’t dish it out. That’s a good rule for everybody, but especially good if you think you want to

The media industry is at a crisis point all over the country. Many cities much larger than Savannah don’t even have a daily newspaper at all anymore, much less the wide range of print and broadcast media that we enjoy here.

As for the local daily paper, it comes in for more than its share of bashing, which on occasion I’ve been known to join in on.

But there are plenty of people doing really good work at the Morning News, and in any case it’s certainly better than having no daily paper at all.

In addition to Connect and our fairly unique and independent market niche, there are plenty of other weekly/monthly/ bimonthly publications to enjoy, including

Contrast this with Atlanta’s Creative Loafing, one of the country’s first alt-weeklies and a paper I was once affiliated with.

They recently downsized to just a monthly print edition, each about the size as one of Connect’s weekly editions, in a vastly bigger media market that’s tenth-largest in the country.

The seminal Village Voice alt-weekly in New York, number one media market in the country, has gone online-only and has no print presence at all. In the country’s second-largest media market, LA Weekly is currently undergoing a great amount of turmoil, and no one can quite gauge its future.

It’s not just about print media, obviously.

As for broadcast media in Savannah, there are three network TV affiliates with news teams: WTOC, WSAV, and WJCL, in addition to Georgia Public Broadcasting’s TV arm and its news and issues programming.

Since we’re in the truth-telling business, I think it’s time that someone finally stand up and tell the truth that Savannah really is remarkably well-served by all of its local media, especially considering the extraordinarily small size of the market. be in this profession for longer than five minutes.

We rarely if ever have the incredible luxury of being anonymous. For better or worse our name, and often our picture, is usually next to everything we write and every opinion we have. That’s certainly true of everyone at Connect.

Obviously all of us in the media could use some improvement — and no doubt in some cases a lot of improvement.

I’m definitely my own worst critic, and there are plenty of things I’d like to improve about what we do here at Connect Savannah.

But since we’re in the truth-telling business, I think it’s time that someone finally stand up and tell the truth that Savannah really is remarkably well-served by all of its local media, especially considering the extraordinarily small size of the market.

I include all our competitors and colleagues in this statement.

Here’s the thing: Savannah is only about the 93rd largest media market in the U.S. There are dozens of larger markets that many people here might look down their noses at.

Do Savannah, Savannah Magazine, South Magazine, the Savannah Business Journal, and The Spirit in Pooler.

There are two African-American owned papers, the Savannah Tribune and the Savannah Herald.

There is a Spanish-language publication, La Voz Latina (owned by Morning News parent Gatehouse).

There are three university publications in Savannah staffed and run by college students: The Armstrong/Ga. Southern Inkwell, SCAD’s District, and Savannah State University’s Tiger’s Roar.

Tiger’s Roar represents one of only two accredited journalism programs in the entire state (the other is at my own alma mater, the University of Georgia).

Regional publications include the Coastal Courier, Effingham Herald, Bryan County News, Statesboro Herald, and Connect Statesboro, all owned by Connect parent company Morris Multimedia.

As for Connect, we remain one of the healthiest alt-weekly papers in the country (alt-weekly = alternative to the mainstream media), with a robust and actually quite large print edition each week.

In the radio world, there is a wide range of solid options for news, including Georgia Public Broadcasting at FM 91, WTKS talk radio, and the political/news programming at WRUU community radio, an allvolunteer effort which does great work.

All in a metro area of only about 380,000 people, across Chatham, Effingham, and Bryan Counties.

This is also quite a fast-growing area, with plenty of new arrivals. One of the most frustrating things is how quickly newcomers begin echoing the fashionable complaints about there not being any local media worth speaking of — actually quite an absurd statement.

Ironically enough, they usually make these statements on Facebook. Perhaps they can’t find the local media because they spend so much time there instead.

I assume if you’re reading this, you’re at least a tangential follower of what we do at Connect.

But in addition to us, there really is pretty much something for everyone here.

It’s a shame that so many people take it so much for granted, so much of the time. CS

Orange Crush:

Justice is slow but inexorable

I JUST got back from doing something that I rarely do: I went to the beach. I crossed the causeways, shelled out $4 in parking, sat on the pier and ate a chili dog.

I watched other people enjoying ice cream cones, sunning, shopping, sipping pina coladas and tentatively dipping their toes into the surf on a sunny-cool afternoon.

And it reminded me what this story is all about: a day at the beach. This weekend, when thousands of African-American college students come to Tybee Island seeking the same experience, they’ll get something different.

Some businesses will close. And the City of Tybee Island will welcome them with barricades.

I didn’t know the difference between a French barricade and Jersey barricade until the City of Tybee Island issued a press release explaining them and their use during Orange Crush, the black spring break. (French: think bike rack. Jersey: think construction site.)

The City will deploy them to control traffic (and drugs and alcohol, it says!).

The idea that “young” and “black” deserve word association with “drugs” and 8 “alcohol” (my first association is “gifted,” a

Nina Simone reference) lies, I think, at the heart of what Orange Crush has become: not the simple, everyday, all-American thing that it is, but instead some kind of local Password game where the wrong answer means “racist.”

I’m happy to report that this year’s Orange Crush has brought some needed changes that make the City of Tybee Island, at least officially, legally and on paper, less racist.

The City also will deploy the French and Jersey barricades, they say, during the St. Patrick’s and July 4th weekends. Equal inconvenience.

Also, the City won’t enforce an ordinance from 2017 and 2018, the one that restricted public consumption of alcohol and amplified music: but only on the weekends of Orange Crush. That policy rightly earned its nickname, the “Jim Crow Ordinance,” and prompted federal intervention.

It’s hard to say how much of these improvements were, as the City says, “voluntarily initiated” by Tybee Island, or the work of a handful of dedicated anti-racist citizens combined with a guy in shades from the U.S. Department of Justice. (I actually don’t know if he wore shades, but all feds should.)

“We’re still not at a point in our development where we can sit and talk face to face about each other,” says Pearce, a founder of Tybee MLK, who says the negotiations

over these changes were so contentious, the parties had to meet in separate rooms with fed shady going between them.

“There’s so much fear.”

What hasn’t changed is the fact that the City of Tybee Island is just as determined as ever to crack down on this “unpermitted” event. “Unpermitted!”

Watch this word and how it’s used. St. Patrick’s Day and July 4th also are unpermitted events, outside of the former’s signature parade and the latter’s municipal fireworks displays. And yet only Orange Crush promoters get a stern letter threatening civil and legal penalties for theirs.

Of course, whom would you threaten for St. Patrick’s Day? The bishop? Or July 4th? The Continental Congress? Frankly, Orange Crush’s biggest problem is that it is, in fact, a big and scheduled event promoted by a handful of people to profit from that

all-American “Jack & Diane,” “sucking on a chili dog” and “Under the Boardwalk” that we all love.

Orange Crush promoters would do themselves and everybody a favor by working with the City to permit their event.

Would that solve the real issue?

Perhaps Tybee Island Mayor Jason Buelterman summed it up best when he told me, “No matter what we do on this, people will be mad at us one way or another.” I’m sure Orange Crush feels the same.

Because I didn’t walk down that pier today with the weight of hundreds of years of socially constructed bias and fear against me. As long as large numbers of young and black people make large numbers of old and white people fear for their lives, it’s an ice cream cone, pina colada and surf toe-dip just over the mountaintop – the promised land. Kehoe Iron Works recognized for historic preservation

CHARLES H. MORRIS, founder of Morris Multimedia, the Savannah-based parent company of Connect Savannah, was recognized April 12 at the 42nd annual Preservation Awards ceremony in Thomasville for his efforts to preserve the Kehoe Iron Works in Savannah.

The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation presented 29 awards recognizing the best of preservation across the state. The Trust is one of the country’s leading statewide, nonprofit preservation organizations.

Their mission is to preserve and revitalize Georgia’s diverse historic resources. Awards are presented on the basis of the contributions of the person or project to the community or state and on compliance with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.

“This year’s winners represent a tremendous dedication to restoring and revitalizing Georgia’s historic buildings and communities,” said Mark C. McDonald, president of The Georgia Trust. “We are proud to honor such deserving projects and individuals.”

Morris and Kevin Rose, the lead design architect for the Kehoe Iron Works

restoration project, were notified by the Georgia Trust that the project received the prestigious Marguerite Williams Award.

Rose’s colleagues, Rebecca Fenwick and Jerry Lominack of Lominack Kolman Smith Architects, accepted the award on Morris’ behalf.

The Marguerite Williams Award is the highest honor given by the Trust, and is presented each year to the project that has had the greatest impact on preservation in the state.

Morris’ Kehoe Iron Works project was recognized by the Trust for its large scale and the impact its rehabilitation has had on the Savannah community. The project also overcame significant challenges, according to the Trust, specifically the remediation of a brownfield site.

Morris and his team also had to stabilize and restore the metal machine shop and masonry foundry buildings. Trust officials credit Morris’ “strong vision” for bringing the previously vacant 6.3 acre site back to life. From 1873 to 1902, an iron foundry and gas company stood on the site, according to the Trust.

“The rehabilitation of the Kehoe Iron Works is a particularly strong example of preservation principles in action,” says Rebecca Fenwick, Preservation Director for Lominack Kolman Smith.

“Incorporating roughly 7,000 square

feet of underground additions and others hidden from view, the Kehoe Iron Works restoration honors the unique historic and architectural integrity of this rare vestige of Savannah’s industrial era. More importantly, rehabilitation efforts and the incorporation of modern conveniences allowed the historic buildings associated of the iron works to remain in the spotlight.”

Fenwick adds that “Further, a conscious effort was made by the project team, at the direction of Mr. Morris, to retain as much historic material as possible. Elements that had been lost such as decorative interior iron columns and the tower’s decorative widow’s walk featuring the Kehoe name were likewise restored.”

Today, Kehoe Iron Works boasts 8,000 square feet of event venue space along with an outdoor plaza and amphitheater, Trust officials said. The complex has a view of the Savannah River.

Morris, Rose and their team also ensured that historic elements were maintained, through repair and reuse, according to the Trust.

Morris says that Rose, an accomplished sound engineer as well as an architect, understood what he wanted to achieve with the project: To not only preserve key historic architectural components but also to provide cutting edge sound design for the space.

Morris began buying the property in 2003. The project itself took nearly five years to complete. The estimated $35 million it cost to restore Kehoe Iron Works has been paid in full, according to Morris.

“I was determined to do it,” Morris says.

“It’s given me a lot of joy.”

For Rose, the award and the project are especially timely.

“In a time where we are seeing outside developers cashing in on the richness of Savannah’s history, I find it odd that many of them are choosing to demolish some of that history to meet return on investment goals,” Rose says, referring to an approved plan to demolish 80 percent of the Seaboard Freight Station in West Savannah to build new apartments.

“Mr. Morris set the bar high on this project. I challenge other developers to attempt to come close and our City to challenge them as well,” Rose concludes.

EVER SINCE the Trump administration announced irrational plans to bring offshore drilling and oil exploration to Georgia’s coast, intense opposition has been growing and getting louder.

Opposition reached fever pitch earlier this month when the Georgia House of Representatives passed Resolution 48 – which opposes drilling and searching for oil off Georgia’s coast – by an overwhelming margin, 125 to 36.

Our coast is home to 33% of all salt marshes in the eastern United States, providing important nursery grounds for fish, birds and shellfish. We are home to incredible coastal resources like Cumberland National Seashore, the National Marine Sanctuary Gray’s Reef, and waters that form critical habitat for our state’s marine mammal, the critically endangered North Atlantic right whale.

A healthy, unspoiled ocean is something

Communities and legislators alike share the same basic concerns.

The passage of Resolution 48 builds on the already impressive opposition to drilling from communities along the East Coast. In fact, more than 250 municipalities from Maine to Florida formally oppose oil and gas activities, including 16 in Georgia.

From the booming inland metropolis of Atlanta to picturesque islands like Tybee, tiny towns like Riceboro, and the port city of Savannah, Georgians are united in the fight to stop drilling. The Port Wentworth Business Chamber of Commerce also stepped up last year to protect Georgia’s coast when it joined an alliance representing tens of thousands of businesses that are saying, “no, thank you” to Atlantic offshore drilling.

Our governor, along with the governors from every other East Coast state, sees the importance of maintaining healthy oceans and a clean shoreline. Governor Kemp has led Georgia’s bipartisan effort to keep drilling away from our coast.

Siding in favor of ongoing military operations and Georgia’s robust tourist economy, Kemp told Savannah Morning News, “I just don’t think we need to be doing it off the coast of Georgia” and continued to say “I’ll fight for that position.”

Our economy is fueled by the coast and the rich natural resources you find there – on our beaches, marshes, clean salty waters, and all the bounty within. Following the passage of Resolution 48, Representative Buddy Carter, whose congressional district spans the entirety of Georgia’s coastline, finally joined the fight to protect our state from a future of offshore drilling. He sent a letter to President Trump’s Secretary of the Interior – the person responsible for offshore drilling – asking that Georgia be excluded from any offshore energy plans.

In the letter, Representative Carter explains that he “was elected to represent the entire coast of our state and to be their voice in Washington.” I know we are all grateful to Representative Carter for recognizing the importance of keeping Georgia’s coastline oil free. Everyone should thank Congressman Carter for taking this stand – he backed our communities and we embrace it with open arms.

The momentum only continues to grow, and Representative Carter’s message is just in time as we all anxiously await the decision on whether the Atlantic Ocean will still be on the table in President Trump’s offshore drilling plan, expected any day now.

Let me be clear, Georgia isn’t giving up without a fight and the good news is that President Trump can still do the right thing – that means no offshore drilling in the Atlantic Ocean.

Girls Who Code Savannah offers two sessions of summer camp. It’s open to girls in rising grades 6-8 and is completely free thanks to generous support from a Downtown Neighborhood Association grant and a Comcast scholarship.

The camp officially came about last summer as a sort of test-run.

“We thought about it towards the spring, and it was a little too late to try to start one for the school year, so we decided to kick it off and get our feet wet with a camp,” Beck remembers. “So we did a camp and a fall session after that.”

The sessions are a big hit with around 40 girls involved.

“It’s taking off—it gets better and better in each iteration of it,” says Beck.

“It can go up to the day of the camp,” remembers Batchelor. “Last year we had some people just walk in.”

The camp is designed to be fun and geared towards all the girls’ interests.

“We don’t want [the girls] to feel like they have to follow the curriculum like they’re in school, so we give them a few options of what they can choose,” explains Batchelor. “Last year we had two groups build games. One was a fashion game and one was an outer space game. Another

group built a website, which I don’t think they realized how hard it is to learn HTML, but they had some type of website by the end of it.”

“We want them to see all the facets,” adds Beck. “We’re looking at incorporating coding and dance to it—that always interests people.”

Girls Who Code Savannah are also branching out beyond the camps to show people what the club’s all about without signing up for a summer camp.

Being at Bull Street Labs is advantageous for the girls because it puts them around people in the field.

“It’s a really neat environment because they’re getting to brush elbows with people who already have careers in this,” says Beck. “When we’re there, the kids get to talk to the people around them and see what they’re doing, even in a larger context. We do it to show a wide variety of what you can do with computer science.”

Chatham County Police investigate shooting The Chatham County Police Department is investigating an early morning shooting that happened on Liberty Parkway near ACL Boulevard on April 18.

“The male victim tells police he was walking in the area when he was shot just before 1 a.m. He had a gunshot wound to the leg, and was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries,” police report.

At this time, there is no description of a suspect.

Savannah Police seek info on Sexual Assault

Savannah Police’s Special Victims Unit is seeking information on a sexual assault that occurred April 17 in the Bacon Park area.

“The female, who is in her early teens, was walking in the area of Webster and Gerald Drive around 3:15 p.m. when a newer model, red Toyota sedan stopped

and the occupants forced her into the vehicle. The vehicle had a paper tag with an expiration date of May,” police report.

The subjects took her to an unknown location and assaulted her before leaving her in the Bacon Park area.

The subjects were two black males. One of the men was described as approximately 5-foot-2 and wearing a gray jacket, blue jeans and black sneakers. The other subject was approximately 5-foot-11 and was wearing a black ski mask, orange hoodie and black leather gloves.

Anyone with information on the incident should contact the Savannah Police Violent Crimes Tip Line at (912) 525-3124.

Tips can also be sent to CrimeStoppers at (912) 234-2020. Tipsters remain anonymous and may qualify for a cash reward.

Five businesses fail City alcohol check

A recent operation into underage drinking sales by Savannah Police’s Alcohol Beverage Compliance Unit (ABC) resulted in 10 businesses passing and five being cited.

“During the operation, underage subjects visited 15 businesses, ranging from restaurants and bars to convenience and package stores, to determine if they comply with Georgia law and the Savannah City Ordinance concerning alcohol sales,”

a City spokesperson says.

“The managers or licensees of the establishments were notified of the alcohol sold, that the buyer was underage, if the buyer was checked for identification, how the alcohol was served or sold, and what actions would be taken by law enforcement. The Georgia Department of Revenue Alcohol and Tobacco Division will be informed of the results of the operation,” the City says.

“We’re heading into the summer, and there will be a lot more underage individuals visiting establishments in our community. Our goal is to continue to remind the businesses in our area to stay vigilant in checking ID’s and following the law,” said Lt. Shinita Young, commander of the ABC Unit. “It truly takes all of us working together to ensure the welfare of our youth.”

The 10 businesses that passed will receive letters of congratulations from the Savannah Police Department.

According to the City of Savannah’s Alcohol Beverage Ordinance, a first offense results in a minimum fine of $500; second offense, if within 12 months of the first, results in a $750 fine; third offense, if within 18 months of the first, results in a $1,000 fine; and any further offense, if within 24 months of the first, results

in issuance of a notice to appear to show cause for why the establishment’s alcohol license should not be revoked.

Entrepreneurial Spirit

Scientists are aghast at an eBay listing offering a rare baby T-rex fossil for a $2.95 million buy-it-now price. Fossil hunter Alan Detrich, who discovered the fossil in 2013, is believed to have created the listing in February for the 68 million-year-old artifact, which until recently had been on loan to the Natural History Museum at the University of Kansas. CNBC reported the specimen has a 15-foot-long body, 21-inch skull and serrated teeth, and Detrich estimates its age at death to be about 4 years.

The Society of Vertebrate Paleontology issued a statement expressing concerns that “the fossil, which represents a unique part of life’s past, may be lost from the public trust. ... Only casts and other replicas of vertebrate fossils should be traded, not the fossils themselves.”

Another Day at Walmart

• At around 8:30 p.m. on April 10, things got interesting at an Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Walmart store. Lisa Smith, 46, entered the store with her unleashed dog, Bo, according to police, and as Bo distracted shoppers and store staff, Smith pulled apart store displays, putting them in her cart. After being asked by workers to leave the store, Smith went out to the parking lot and started practicing karate moves. Bo grabbed a box of Jiffy Cornbread Muffin Mix and also attempted to leave the store.

Meanwhile, Smith’s son, Benny Vann, 25, had made his way to the back of the store, where he completely undressed, exposing himself to other shoppers, and grabbed new clothes from store racks before attempting to run over police officers with his scooter. WHO TV reported Smith was charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and misdemeanor bail jumping.

Vann racked up charges of lewd and lascivious behavior, disorderly conduct and retail theft. Bo, police said, received only a warning for his theft of the muffin mix.

• Crossville, Tennessee, police officers pulled over Sally Selby, 45, at 5 a.m. on April 5 as she motored down Highway 127 -- in the slow lane -- driving a Walmart mobility scooter. She was on her way to the Waffle House, she said, to buy a cup of coffee. WTVF reported that Selby initially told officers she had built the scooter, but Walmart confirmed it was one of theirs and had surveillance video of Selby driving the scooter out of the store to back up their story. She was arrested for theft.

The Continuing Crisis

-- In Cary, North Carolina, Wake County Deputy J. Rattelade, responding to a report of a car crash on the evening of April 5, found one of the drivers, Derwood Johnson, 36, of Fort Worth, Texas, had gotten out of his car and removed all his clothes before starting to walk across the street.

As Deputy Rattelade tried to arrest him,

Johnson hit her on the head, reported WTVD. With the help of other first responders and some pepper spray, Rattelade was able to subdue Johnson, who was charged with assault on a government official. Rattelade was unhurt; Johnson was taken to an area hospital for further evaluation.

-- On April 13, a family in Newtown, Connecticut, returned home from a morning shopping trip to find Joseph Achenbach, 35, wandering around inside their home naked. The Watertown man had crashed his SUV in the homeowners’ backyard and moseyed inside through an unlocked glass door. Achenbach’s clothes could not be found at the scene, leading police to believe he had been naked when he crashed. FOX61 reported that he was charged with second-degree criminal trespassing and driving while intoxicated.

We’ve all swatted at pesky sweat bees buzzing around our heads, but a Taiwanese woman suffered a more invasive form of irritation after participating in the Qingming Festival, or Tomb Sweeping Day, when Taiwanese people visit their families’ graves to spruce them up. The 29-year-old woman, identified by her surname, He, thought she had gotten dirt in her eye, but when the eye later swelled shut, she went to Fooyin University Hospital for help, The Washington Post reported. Hung Chi-ting, the hospital’s head of ophthalmology, looked in her eye through a microscope and was startled to see insect legs wiggling in her eye socket. The doctor eventually extracted four sweat bees from her eyelid. The bees, which crave salt, were feeding off of He’s tears, he explained. He is expected to fully recover, and the bees, still alive, were kept for further study.

Suspicions Confirmed

A concerned animal lover in Devon, England, contacted authorities on April 8 to report that a fox she had been watching hadn’t moved for several days, reported Fox News. In response, Ellie Burt, an officer with the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals, suggested trying the “broom test,” which didn’t make the fox stir, but Burt was told it “tracked them with its eyes and seemed to be breathing well.” When Burt arrived on the scene, she quickly diagnosed the problem: The fox was a fake, “stuffed by a taxidermist. He’d clearly been placed under a bush outside of the houses as a prank,” Burt said. “Someone had been moving it around the neighborhood.” Burt discarded the fox “to avoid any further calls.”

The Litigious Society

An unnamed 40-year-old man in Muncie, Indiana, is suing his parents for trashing his collection of porn videos and magazines, which he estimates was worth $29,000. According to the Associated Press, the man had been living with his parents for 10 months following a divorce, and after he bought a new house, his parents delivered his possessions -- minus the 12 boxes of porn. His parents admitted dumping the collection; in an email quoted by the lawsuit, the father told his son, “I did you a big favor by getting rid of all this stuff.” The son is seeking $87,000 in financial damages.

Cautionary Tale

Paramedic Natalie Kuniciki, 23, was lying in bed watching a movie in her London flat when she stretched her neck and heard a loud crack. Thinking nothing of it, she went to sleep, but soon reawakened to realize she couldn’t move her left leg. “I got up and tried to walk to the bathroom and I was swaying everywhere. I looked down and realized I wasn’t moving my left leg at all, then I fell to the floor,” Kuniciki told The Sun. She called an ambulance, and a CT scan confirmed that she’d had a stroke.

When her neck cracked, it had caused her vertebral artery to burst, sending a clot to her brain and triggering the stroke.

Kuniciki spent a month in the hospital while she regained mobility on her left side. Doctors hope she can return to work in six to 12 months.

Least Competent Criminal

Brandon Cory Lecroy, 26, of Greenwood, South Carolina, really wanted to get rid of his neighbor. In March 2018, The New York Times reported, the FBI was tipped off that Lecroy had contacted an unidentified white supremacist group and asked them to kill his African American neighbor, hang him from a tree and leave a cross burning in his yard. An FBI agent posing as a hit man got in touch with Lecroy, who offered $500 for the killing and told the agent he was planning to take over the neighbor’s property. As soon as Lecroy made a $100 down payment, he was taken into custody. On April 12, Lecroy pleaded guilty to a murder-for-hire charge and was sentenced to 10 years in prison and three years of supervision. CS

IF YOU’RE NOT familiar with All Night Drug Prowling Wolves, you can definitely start at the band name itself. Founded in Atlanta over a decade ago, the band isn’t particularly active these days but finds time about two or three times per year to get together and play some rock and roll.

True to their word, the band is getting back together once again and coming to Savannah to help El-Rocko Lounge celebrate three years in business.

Ahead of the show on Sat., April 27, which also features the great Black Tusk as well as Square One, we spoke to the Wolves’ Thomas Cheshire about the band, their history, and future.

Thanks for chatting with me today, man!

Cheshire: I’m so glad it worked out. Not living in Atlanta for almost 10 years now, I truly love the guys in the Wolves but we’re not able to do much. We’ve got ourselves in a happy place where if we can get together a few times a year and celebrate what we did, we’re very happy with that.

So you’re all kind of scattered now and then get together when you can?

Cheshire: Yeah, so we basically do probably two or three shows a year now. This year, it being El Rocko’s third anniversary - Wes is an old friend, and I’ve known him for over 20 years now. So whenever I can do something for him, I try to.

I moved back to New York in 2011, and we were all going in different directions.

Everyone was married and having kids, and I didn’t have any kids and my marriage was ending. So what I needed most was music. Those guys couldn’t do it as much, so it was as simple as, “I’m gonna get out of town and work on my own stuff.”

Now that you only get together a few times a year, do you appreciate this band more?

Cheshire: Oh yeah, completely. It’s hands down the easiest band I’ve ever been in. They’re wonderful humans, great men, and everyone knows that their time is insanely valuable. Everyone’s

I’m sure you’ve been asked this a billion times, but how did you guys find this band name?

Cheshire: Marlow Sanchez, our guitar player, is the main riff writer in the band who I’ve been playing with going on 20 years. We hadn’t played together in a minute, and I think he came up with the name first. He just loved the name, and he was like, “Let’s do something under this moniker.”

It’s the last line in the Clash song “(White Man) In Hammersmith Palais,” which is a song we both love. But I probably didn’t even realize it was the actual line until he pointed it out to me. It sounded amazing, it was poetic—Marlow didn’t have to work too hard to sell me on it.

What were some of the early influences that set the tone for this band?

Cheshire: We were punk rock kids who grew up on that stuff. We were influenced by the DIY mentality and way of life. We drank and we did drugs, but other than

that we tried to be good humans and make good decisions. For us, being punk was not about being a bad person. It was about being the opposite.

I grew up in New York and I was a New Wave kid first, but then I got into punk rock. A lot of the bands that came out of England in the 70s influenced us - The Jam, Elvis Costello, Stiff Little Fingers, all those bands influenced us with the music and the art and the lyrics.

Do you ever do a reunion show now and think, “Man, we really need to make another record”?

Cheshire: We do! Every time we get together. Marlow and I are always writing and sending each other ideas. I’m not a fan of saying it’ll never happen. We’re always working on ideas, so you never know. But there’s also a good chance that we may continue doing these two or three shows and say, “This was a special thing and we bottled this thing that we’re proud of—let’s continue to celebrate it.” CS

busy working, raising kids, and they’re slammed. And some guys are still pretty active in music, and some aren’t able to play as much. So when the five of us get in a room, it’s really enjoyable.

MONKS OF DOOM: Camper Van Beethoven, Counting Crows alumni team up

VICTOR KRUMMENACHER is perhaps best known for being a member of the critically lauded legendary ‘80s band Camper Van Beethoven, which he led alongside future Cracker frontman David Lowery.

As a side project to Camper, Krummenacher and a few of his bandmates—including longtime multi-instrumentalist and Counting Crows member David Immergluck—started Monks of Doom.

Both bands existed at the same time briefly, before Camper called it quits. The Monks played on, working sporadically throughout the 90s and beyond.

When Camper returned in 2004, Monks of Doom continued and the world of CVB, Monks, and Cracker soon collided. All three bands often collaborate on festivals and shows these days, due to all three sharing members.

Continuing in that spirit of inter-band collaboration, Krummenacher is bringing not only the Monks of Doom to The Jinx on Fri., April 26, but also his new solo project, which will open the night. It’s being presented by Knocked Out Loaded, the new concert promotion venture run by Savannah staple Jim Reed.

Reed is known for his involvement in all things music and film in Savannah, and launched KOL in the same spirit as his previous promotions venture Tiny Team Concerts. In that endeavor, Reed served as main talent buyer among a dedicated group of music lovers who brought some

memorable shows to town. Now, he continues that work with the launch of KOL and the upcoming Monks show.

Ahead of Krummenacher’s show, we asked him about his career and his two latest projects: the first original Monks album since 1992 and his solo effort.

Something really fascinating about your history is that all the Monks were in Camper. And now it’s this big, amazing musical world of people playing with each other. That couldn’t have been intentional?

Krummenacher: Well, you know, the truth of the matter is that [Camper Van Beethoven] went through a pretty argumentative stage. Bands are hard, there’s no way around it. The Monks started because I think there was some frustration. Bands develop personalities, and they get a series of behaviors going. And if you can sell it, they really get calcified. I’ve always been pretty sensitive to that, and I don’t like standing still. That’s what was happening at the time, so we got this idea that we’d try and do a more improvised composition with the Monks. It started really as a side project. Camper was doing well, so there was a lot of tension around our decision to do that.

But the way I operate is that the music comes first, and that’s the kind of music I wanted to make so that’s what I was going to do. If you’re career-minded, it might not be the best way to go at it. But music is not a career choice for me, so much as it’s something I’m just going to do. So the

Monks started as sort of a reaction to what was going on around us and out of a desire to play a certain kind of music.

That certainly seems to be the way the whole thing has operated. The Bronte Pin is your first album of originals in many years, and there was a covers album in between. So it seems like you really do just do these things on your own terms.

Yeah, and everyone’s got obligations too.

Some have other bands, and in some situations we have day jobs. But when the phone rings and it can work, you do it. The older you get you realize, “I should do this, because I might not be able to do this next year.”

Tell me about the idea to tour both the 2018 Monks record and the new solo project Blue Pacific at the same time.

I was looking for a good means of playing some shows, and we’d been touring on the Monks record to this super dedicated fan base. And I thought, while we’re able to play I wanted to see if I could put something together. Camper and Cracker have toured together frequently, so I was just thinking that I could just hire the Monks to back me up and do it in that similar way. CS

BY NOW, much of Savannah is aware of The Goliards, our city’s ancient music ensemble. The group, consisting of some of the most accomplished musicians in the area, come together to perform music of the Renaissance and Medieval eras on period-correct historic and replica instruments.

On Sun., April 28, the group will present La Sirena, a collection of songs of Sephardic heritage, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Founder John Hillenbrand expanded on the background of the music in an interview, explaining that much of it began when the Jews were run out of Spain in 1492.

“They had been living in Spain for centuries, and had developed a unique culture.

Their music shared a lot of similarities with North African music,” he says.

“When the Jews left Spain, they went wherever they could. They were received

in the Muslim world, but spread throughout the Mediterranean Basin and did keep their language - which was a variant of Castilian Spanish. They kept some of the musical heritage from Spain, but it did evolve. So we don’t really know the age of a lot of these songs.”

Many of the songs, which Hillenbrand says were likely around long before 1492, are quite similar in their present day form to the arrangements of their origin - at least that is assumed, given the fact that they also have existed in communities that were geographically distant from where they came.

“The songs themselves tend to fit into categories,” Hillenbrand says.

“There are a lot of bitter love songs, and I guess a bitter love song is probably more pleasant to listen to than a happy love song. There are lots of lullabies, and some story songs. The name of this program is a motif that crops up fairly often in the repertoire - [Sirena] is always tempting people to throw themselves into the sea, but in the last song in the program she actually

prevents a young Spanish count from committing suicide.”

This performance will be the third Sephardic program they’ve done, but the first in about five years. Two newer group members will be involved this time around, including soprano Sheila Berg.

For those interested in learning more about the music that The Goliards perform, starting with this program would be the way to go.

“I think, metaphorically, if somebody were to stick their toe in the water to test the temperature, he or she is very likely to get hooked on it pretty quickly,” he says.

“From there on out, I think things will develop naturally. People who are of Sephardic Jewish descent who may have an ancestor or family member who speaks Ladino, would probably be naturally inclined to be interested in this music.” CS

RELATIVE NEWCOMERS Mile Twelve are carrying on the tradition of young virtuosos playing bluegrass music. Think of some of the absolute greats in the more modern history of the genre—Chris Thile, Ricky Skaggs, Sam Bush, Sara Watkins; there’s so many to list and they all started young. The members of Mile Twelve have that going for them, but they’re also pushing the genre and the instrumentation in new directions and pulling relatively young audiences everywhere they go.The band, who formed in Boston, Massachusetts, just released a full-length album produced by the acclaimed Bryan Sutton, and they’ll be coming to Randy Wood’s Pickin’ Parlor on Sat., April 27. Ahead of the performance, we spoke to mandolinist David Benedict about the band’s rise and what bluegrass means to him.

How did you all find each other?

Benedict: The band is from all over the place, but we got our start in Boston. Evan [Murphy], our guitar player and singer, is the only Boston native. Everyone else kind of moved to Boston for different reasons.

I actually joined the band a little bit later, once things got started.

The band met at local gatherings—we all are young and wanted to do this for a living, and were looking for other people who wanted to do that. There’s not that many people out there who meet that criteria, so we all found each other that way.

Would you say that you all came from bluegrass backgrounds, generally?

Benedict: Yeah, I mean, none of us grew up in bluegrass families. But we all found it differently. Me and BB [Bowness, banjo player] playing mandolin and banjo, those are just very specific instruments to the genre that we kind of found music through that community.

Bronwyn [Keith-Hynes, fiddle player] played a lot of Celtic music and competed in a lot of competitions in Ireland, and Evan got into it through Bruce Springsteen’s sort of bluegrass album he did a while back. Greg Liszt was playing banjo for him, he’s an amazing player from the Boston area. So yeah, all different backgrounds. But we kind of found our way here through this music.

We were just talking about that. The IBMA [International Bluegrass Music Association] has a big conference every year that we go to, and it’s a homecoming of sorts. You get to make music with your friends and your heroes, which is pretty special.

What I love about modern bluegrass is that it’s a particularly progressive genre. There’s a lot I see in common with you guys and bands like Punch Brothers or even New Grass Revival.

What’s your approach in this day and age to bluegrass? Do you have a more wide view of what you can do on these instruments?

Benedict: That’s a great question. We definitely look up to those bands. It’s cool you mentioned New Grass Revival—I was just

watching this Sam Bush documentary, and there’s this clip where someone asks him, “Why is it called New Grass Revival?” He points back to groups like Seldom Scene, who often would take popular music and reinvent with bluegrass instruments. So I think there’s been a long tradition of progression. A lot of forward thinking players.

For us, it’s kind of more about following our own musical tastes. With this most recent record, City On a Hill, I think it’s been more focused towards songwriting and storytelling. That’s something that I feel often gets overlooked in bluegrass.

What was your experience working with Bryan Sutton? He’s somebody who’s played with and worked with seemingly everyone. How was it having him around as a producer?

Benedict: It was our first time getting to work with him in that setting. We’ve all just looked up to him and the amazing catalog of music he’s had. We sort of leaned into the experience that he’s had. We did most of the arranging and pre-production, but after that we kind of just put it into his hands and let him direct us as he thought was best for the music.

I really loved it because he was hands on and gave us some really practical advice on performance and recording techniques, but then he kind of let us do our own thing and wasn’t overbearing. He was always interested in what we thought. CS

Savannah Stage Company promotes bravery with new musical The long-running company gets ready for a special performance

SAVANNAH STAGE COMPANY has been a part of the local theater community for some time now, presenting thoughtprovoking performances that often evoke a positive message. Their theme for the current season is bravery, and they’re taking that theme to Forsyth Park for a free, one day only performance of Billy, Goat, Gruff: The Musical.

Ahead of the show, which is set to take place on April 28 at 6:30 p.m. and is 100 percent family friendly, we spoke to SSC Co-Founder and Artistic Director Jayme Tinti about what to expect.

What is this show about?

This show falls into a theme for this season at SSC, which is bravery. Tell me a bit more about that.

Tinti: Bravery is one of our values as a company. The path that we take for every decision that’s made here is, is it in pursuit

of our mission and is it part of our values?

When you think about bravery, the scariest thing we could think of was doing musicals. We usually do one per year, and they take it out of us. When we thought about the scariest thing, we thought about musicals. So we decided to do an entire season of musicals!

We also chose stories that specifically had an act of bravery, where a character in the play makes a decision to change their life and the lives of those around them. For this particular play, the moment that Billy decides to take off and be brave in the night to better the lives of him and his brothers, that’s the moment of bravery for us.

The idea of doing a free performance at Forsyth with a show like this also seems to fall in line with that theme, since you’re doing a certain kind of

show that’s a bit out of your comfort zone and putting it out there for the city.

Tinti: Absolutely. When we talk about our values and who we are as a company, everything we talk about happens onstage and off. Yes, we do shows that demonstrate an act of bravery, but how do we from an administrative standpoint also be as brave as possible?

Doing free programming in the park is nothing new to us—even in our first season we were doing Shakespeare sonnets in the park. It goes back to our mission of accessibility, and making theater as accessible as possible. And what’s more accessible than

free in the middle of the park?

We’ve had turnouts for these things in the past that just really feel like they’re putting a large dent of the city there. You can bring picnic blankets, kids, dogs, and just experience nontraditional theater with the most beautiful backdrop in town.

Tinti: It’s based on a fairytale, essentially.

A folklore tale, I guess you could say. It’s the story of these three goat brothers who are on a mountain and are running out of food. The youngest brother, Billy, talks about the “Pasture of Paradise,” which is a lullaby that their mom used to sing them about a pasture full of food and water. Billy says, “Let’s go!” and the brothers say no because it’s too dangerous.

In the middle of the night, Billy takes off.

He goes over cliffs and ravines, and comes up to a nasty troll who guards the bridge to the pasture of paradise. The troll lets him in knowing that he’s supposed to have two big brothers who are supposed to follow him. Eventually all of the goats make it to the bridge, and we learn that the troll was once best friends with their mom, and that’s how he knows the “Pasture of Paradise” song.

It’s about following your heart. The big song towards the end is, “Seek Your Dreams.” That’s the overall theme of this show—if you have a dream, go out there and get it.

Savannah Rep brings The Legend of Georgia McBride to life The unique new comedy opens on April 25

SAVANNAH REPERTORY THEATER is prepping for opening night of a brand new show, The Legend of Georgia McBride. The play is relatively new, and is getting a ton of buzz for good reason—it’s one of a few new shows written by rising playwright Matthew Lopez. Savannah Rep’s Ken Hailey jumped at the chance to put the hilarious and at times moving show on his stage, as it tells an unconventional story that hasn’t been done in theater before.

Ahead of opening night on April 25, we spoke to Hailey about the show and what audiences can expect.

For those who aren’t familiar, tell me a bit about this show.

Hailey: Well, the tagline we’re using is, “The story of a guy who puts on a dress to become a man.” [laughs] It’s the story of an Elvis impersonator who’s told that he can’t do Elvis at the bar anymore. He’s being replaced by drag queens. One of the drag queens tends to drink a little, and has a pretty spectacular fall on roller skates, so they have to throw the Elvis impersonator on in drag.

Turns out, he ends up being pretty good at it. He starts to enjoy it, because he sees women from another side. The problem is, he can’t bring himself to tell his wife. So it’s about him growing and changing, and of course the inevitable happens and his pregnant wife finds out. While it’s a pretty outrageous comedy, it gets pretty poignant for a while there. It’s really a very special piece.

The playwright is one of the hottest new playwrights out there. He’s a really great new voice in writing. He has another piece called The Whipping Man, which sort of took the world by storm. It didn’t make it to Broadway but it actually became the most professionally-produced show of its year about five years ago. With Georgia McBride, just like Whipping Man it didn’t

make it to Broadway. But regional theaters found out about it and all of the sudden, everybody who could get the rights was doing it.

So how did you find this show, then?

Hailey: There was an actress here in town, and she gave it to me in manuscript. I have some friends in the rights releasing business, and they all told me I needed to look at this piece. We couldn’t find the right show to end the season, and this was on my desk at the time. I was going crazy trying to figure out what we were going to do in this slot. I just happened to pick this thing up.

I was reading it at home, and my partner says, “So when are you doing it?” I said, “How do you know I’m going to do it?”

And he goes, “You were laughing the whole time, and then I looked over and you wiped a tear away. So I knew you were doing it.”

You mentioned the more poignant aspects of the show—can you tell me a bit more about that side of it?

Hailey: He finds out that he can’t be Elvis anymore on the same day that he finds out he’s having a baby. So he has to do this for work. But when she finds out, she has the inevitable question: are you not straight anymore? No, he hasn’t changed. But she actually learned that he has changed a little bit, and she has a bit of a change of heart as well. It’s a lovely, lovely moment.

The other thing about this play is that it is tremendously funny. Whipping Man is a heavy duty post-Civil War drama. So when I read this thing, I was not expecting it to be this funny. CS

“Lori said, ‘You’re going to curate the next show, and not only that, we have three-fourths of the space and instead of five artists we’re going to have ten,” laughs Makover.

The result, “Murmurations,” was a neatly-organized display of work that got Makover’s feet wet with curating.

“One thing about artists curating other artists is that we were very much a part of our own shows,” says Makover, “which can be difficult, but not when you say, ‘Hey, I’m not being objective, I’m not doing a survey of photography. I am being subjective. I’m inviting artists that I identify with that I think will make a great show.’”

In the approach for “Kindred,” Makover chose to abandon the neatness of “Murmurations” in favor of a more experiential

feeling.

“Even in ‘Murmurations,’ where each artist was sort of self-contained, even those flowed within each other,” she says. “[Kindred] is going to be much more overlapping. Sometimes you won’t know where one artist ends and another begins.”

Makover’s vision for “Kindred” as an installation is informed by “Myself a Memory,” an installation curated by her friend Marcus Kenney.

“The last big show I had done in Savannah was with Marcus and I had work on the floor, everywhere,” says Makover. “I really wanted to do something very clean, very simple. For this show, it’s a white space, and I wanted it to be that you walked into this white cloud—very airy, very simple, a spattering of movement.”

Makover came to SCAD in 1996 for an MFA in photography under the old guard of Tom Fisher and Craig Stevens.

“In retrospect, I learned photography as a craft, but also with my hands,” Makover remembers. “That was really important to me and most of why I fell in love with it.”

Makover took a trip to Eastern Europe to research her family that died in the Holocaust since her grandfather wouldn’t

talk about it.

“I was unearthing old memories, old facts, old ideas, things that are uncomfortable and a little bit dark,” she shares. “But I really always wanted my images to be beautiful. It’s not just about death, it’s also about rebirth.”

Somewhere along the way, Makover discovered encaustic photography, the missing piece of her puzzle. She dove into the process and transitioned to full-time artist to make it work.

That devotion to her work, and all the realizations she made along the way, prepared Makover for this moment for “Kindred” to shine.

“This work is by warrior-type women,” Makover muses. “A lot of time, if you look over art in the ages, the feminine gets a little lost and our voice gets lost. I used to try to harden up my work a little because it was too romantic, but guess what? Fuck you.

If it’s too romantic for you, go somewhere else. No apologies. Not only is there a niche for what I make, it’s an important niche.

FOR YEARS, Tobia Makover put herself and her work first.

“For so long, I was striving to be a solo artist,” Makover admits. “As an artist, I work so hard to make any sort of a name for myself, to make a market for myself.

My, my, my. Me, me, me.”

Then Makover was asked by photographer Lori Vrba to be part of a group show, “Sleight of Hand,” during Click Photography Festival in Raleigh, NC. The timing was perfect, and Makover loved Vrba’s work, so she gladly accepted the invitation and had the time of her life.

“None of us knew how exciting this was going to be,” Makover remembers. “And that changed so much. That is the moment it stopped being about me and it was about us. I found my tribe.”

Finding her tribe led her to create “Kindred.”

Makover invited fellow photographers Vrba, Dawn Surratt and Sal Taylor Kydd to contribute work for a weekend-only experience at 2818 Bee Rd. “The tribe is about supporting other artists and lifting them up,” Makover explains. “It wasn’t about my work or my moment. It was about accessing the work and making it flow and seeing the bigger picture and supporting each other. You can be jealous, you can be green with envy—I am every day working with these artists.”

The four artists create similar work, which lights up Makover’s face as she talks about it.

“Sal Taylor Kydd’s work is ethereal, it’s finessed, it’s clean,” Makover says. “I feel my work is all clumpy and messy—I work really fast. Her work is just perfect and light and airy. Dawn’s is light and airy and really installation-based. Lori just did a whole install for Keith Carter, who’s a famous photographer and also her friend— she’s just all fancy pants.”

Hearing Makover gush about other female artists feels refreshing and very necessary in this moment, especially when they could be considered each other’s competition.

“All four of us have a similar vibe, a similar vision in our art,” says Makover.

“Instead of shunning them, we’re coming together and we’re celebrating those commonalities.”

FILMMAKER Kody Cunningham makes films to help people find themselves.

Having created several short films during his time at SCAD, Cunningham now turns his focus to full-length feature writing.

“What We Always Wanted” follows two teenage girls and their 25 year-old cousin, played by Cunningham, in the ever-present struggle of trying to figure out your true self.

The film is currently in pre-production and should start filming this summer.

We talked with Cunningham last week.

1.

How did you get started making films?

I came to SCAD for film, but after that point was 2014, which was when the industry really started to boom in Savannah. My initial goal was to save up some money and go to Los Angeles or New York, but then I got another job, then another job. So I felt like, why move when the work is here?

Not having to go to a bigger market with higher rent prices and all that, to be able to work in the industry while still staying locally, has been very convenient and nice.

It’s given me the ability to make my own work and write me own feature, which is what I’m trying to do now.

2. Tell me about your current film, “What We Always Wanted.”

I started writing it three years ago. My first narrative film at SCAD, my junior year film, starred a bunch of eight year olds.

That was not the ideal first thing to work on. But basically, one of the actors that I auditioned got in the film. She didn’t get the lead, but after that I worked on a project with her older sister who was 14 at the time. Slowly, I started becoming a friend of the family. Right now, I wrote the script for those two girls and me, so it was me playing their cousin. And they’re little white girls, so there’s a little bit of a race issue as well.

But I didn’t really know what I wanted to write, just that I wanted to write something for them. At the time, they were nine and 14, and now they’re 14 and 18. The script is about our three lives, I would say.

I feel like you always think in the next life benchmark, you’re going to figure things out. That’s kind of what I wanted to show with each different age bracket. 14, you’re about to go to high school; 18, you’re about to graduate; and then 25. Each one of them is looking to each other for some sort of, “Oh, and then I’ll figure my life out.”

But you don’t get that. It’s that sort of idea, along with trying to find your passion, because our three characters are kind of in that realm too.

What has been your inspiration during writing?

I’ve been inspired by myself more than anything else. It’s very autobiographical.

The character that’s least autobiographical is probably my character. It was too difficult to write the character that was supposed to be me, as me. I just couldn’t get past it.

It’s just hard. You have to have a third person perspective. That was my initial problem. One, I’d never written a full feature script, but the first two years was just a problem of me writing things that were very personal to me at the time that I was going through. It was very cathartic, but by the time I got over whatever it is I was going through, I’d be like, “Oh, well, this doesn’t really need to be in the script anymore.” I’m in it, so how can I see it?

It’s interesting because when writing this whole thing, my whole goal was to make it as autobiographical as possible and to insert myself as much into it as possible.

And even still, I’m looking through some scenes, and I’m like, “This was my point?

Oh, no, this is what it was about?” I didn’t even realize it.

There’s a family aspect, too. The family aspect was interesting because my parents got a divorce about three years ago, about the same summer [the girls’] parents got a divorce. And so up until that point, there was no parent drama in this script. After that, I was like, now it’s a plot point.

I asked for their permission—not the parents’ permission but the kids’ permission; who cares what the parents think— but the situations in the script that we talk about, some of those are direct quotes from conversations we’ve had, like pulled from our real life. At some point, a younger character has these deep talks and one of the critiques was, “I don’t know if a character that age would say that.” I was like, “Well, she did, and that was two years ago when she was 12.”

: How did your writing process differ in writing the two girl characters?

5. What is it like to direct children?

The benefit is, it either works or it doesn’t. There’s nothing even close to in between. Working with experienced actors, actors figure out their go-to things to do that if they’re not in the mood or whatever, they can go back to their handbook. Like fake crying; things they can lean on. And sometimes as a director, I’m

sitting there like, “Was this a genuine moment, or did they act well enough for me not to be able to tell the difference?” Which I get frustrated with. Sometimes I’m like, “That was good,” and then I look at some of their previous work and they’re doing that same thing over and over again. W With adult actors, they’re always pretty good. They won’t be bad. But with a kid actor, it’s either, “Wow, that was amazing and genuine,” or they’re looking in the camera and we can’t use it.

Using kids can be a gimmick. With an adult character, in the first ten minutes on screen of the movie, the character has to earn watchability. You’re like, “I don’t know if this guy is interesting.” You have to learn the empathy as an adult. With kids, usually immediately as they’re on screen, you’re going to empathize with them.

People say never to work with kids because they’re difficult, which they are, but I don’t feel bad about using them to pull on your heartstrings. IN SAVANNAH, visitors and locals alike are able to enjoy cocktails with a gorgeous water view or poured in a to-go cup for a stroll around the historic district.

However, in a few establishments, drinks — and some snacks — are available while patrons create lasting projects or learn new skills.

Here are a few local options:

Mixology 101

After touring some of the American Prohibition Museum’s exhibits learning about rum runners and moonshiners in the Prohibition years, visitors can sip libations in the upstairs speakeasy. While it’s nice to sample the authentic 1920’s cocktails available, there is also an opportunity to become your own mixologist.

The museum offers cocktail classes once a week, with professional bartenders instructing the steps of one shaken cocktail and one stirred, a classic sour and a Sazerac. Byrd’s cookies are served as snacks and participants get their own Congress Street Up rocks glass as a souvenir.

Museum Director Kayla Black considers the class very thorough, “The bartenders teach you everything from why functional garnishes are important, where bar tools get their names, to why that 3 year-old bottle of vermouth in your home bar makes your martinis taste bad.”

Southbound Brewing Company keeps a full calendar of fun events like Pints & Poses, their yoga night with craft brews, pairings with Duck Donuts and Girl Scout cookies and trivia with local food trucks.

One of their most popular events, which always seems to sell out quickly, is the Savannah Sushi Class.

Scheduled a few times every month, participants learn to make perfect sushi rice, handle raw fish, roll with confidence and leave with the recipe for all the favorite sauces. The class provides dinner as well, with a pre-made roll given out and everything made during class available to eat.

Walking by Painting with a Twist, you can see the groups inside smiling. They are relaxed and happy to spend their night creating themed paintings with qualified instructors to help through every step of the project. The artwork is only improved by the bring your own bottle policy, and sometimes the guests get creative.

While the typical paintbrush accompaniment is a bottle of red, the owners have even seen a shot glass inside a cupcake to celebrate a birthday. Projects can range from date night paintings that fit together to create one work of art to local scenes like the Tybee Pier. Painting with a Twist hosts private parties as well and offers over 6,000 choices of paintings.

The long shadow of Nazism: Author explores family histories People tend to be loyal to their elders, to their parents and people they love, and they tend to see them in a good light. Who wants to know that a parent or grandparent was involved in mass murder?

Even being passive was some sort of action and went into this creating this huge crime, and it’s very hard to get people to look at something that is evil and to relate that to themselves. To acknowledge that your own family member may have been-to whatever extent—involved in the Holocaust: that’s a horrific thing.

The feelings of shame, feelings of guilt, were passed on through the generations, as well as the silence and the denial. If you’re taught by your parents that you don’t speak openly about something terrible like that, you will become silent yourself, because children learn very quickly that you shouldn’t be touching taboos.

The first generation knew that they had done wrong. Even if they had maybe not actively done something wrong, but just by looking away, they had done something. Of course members of this generation didn’t tell their children, “Look, that’s what I’ve seen or done and it’s horrible,” because children would come back to them and say, “Why didn’t you react? Why did you not do anything?”

How do you think your family reckoned with their own complicity, if they did?

mistakes. This applies to politics nowadays—because why should we look at the past if we don’t draw any conclusions for today? The lessons from the past can teach us to form our attitudes today.

German scholarship and politics have worked through the Nazi era to an exemplary extent, but that has not been the case in the private arena. For many German families, the crimes were always committed by someone else. We will not understand how systems like the Nazi system can come about if we remain in constant denial. Many Germans only looked at the big figures like Hitler and Goebbels and said, “Well, they did it.” But no, it’s people like you and me who actually became instrumental in this crime and we need to acknowledge and stand up for it.

The generation that experienced the war as adults didn’t only remain silent about what happened, but it would often see itself as a victim to the war. Well, of course it’s true that Germans also suffered during the course of the war, but if you start a war you cannot expect not to become victims yourselves. It’s time to face up to the fact that the Nazis came from the midst of our families. A BODEGA is a small grocery store, a place where you can stop in grab beer, wine, and snacks in a pinch.

Now Bodega means a small local storefront that turns out woodfire bagels right here in our town.

The Big Bon family started out with a truck and a dream, albeit a truck with a large wood fire pizza oven on the back.

Most locals have devoured Big Bon Pizza’s pizza at various locations around town, wherever Big Bon had parked its oven.

Kay Heritage and her daughter Anna started their adventure with Big Bon Pizza in 2016. A speedy success, the duo decided to expand their woodfire resume to include bagels with the opening of Big Bon Bodega at the beginning of April.

They also added a new team member to the family, Charlotte Masters, Creative Director. The result is the cumulation of the Heritage’s southern Korean roots and Masters’ well deserved art degree into the newest spot that locals are flocking to.

“The purpose of Big Bon is to equip our young team members with business and life skills. And as Big Bon Pizza team started to grow in numbers, we needed a home base where we can expand our purpose and to connect with our community closer in a permanent structure. Big Bon Pizza will continually remain intentionally mobile and do wood fired bagels at the Bodega,” Masters says.

Though the on-the-go pizza oven is incredibly convenient and accessible, for food this delicious, brick and mortar is the best thing that could happen for customers. It’s not often you find the Big Bon mobile oven without a line three bumpers down, so it’s great for patrons to have a place to sit down for a solid meal without standing in the street.

everyone has at least tasted the delicious pizza pies that Big Bon has been pumping out for the last few years. But if you thought those slices of heaven were great, just wait until you see what else they have in store.

Masters and the crew are pumping out bagel sandwiches that will make you rethink everything you thought you knew about the doughy circles of deliciousness.

“Our bagel recipe is inspired by Montreal style wood fired bagels. The recipe is based from our great friends in DC area, Call Your Mother Deli, they were so generous to share their recipe. We brought it home and tested and refined it with the help from friends at Mate Factor. We wanted to make our bagels truly unique by using local raw honey and molasses in our dough and boiling water,” Masters says.

I was able to grab a few bagels although the first week Bodega opened they maintained a line around the block.

Don’t be scared by the crowds—they’re there for a reason.

The expansion of a pizza company into bagels may seem odd, but once you have one of these little halos of yeasty perfection, you’ll understand why the owners decided to move in that direction.

The best part about Bodega’s artisan bagels is the light finish of smoke that is imparted through it’s cook in the big woodfire pizza oven that sits in corner.

That’s something you don’t normally get with a bagel, and, let me tell you, the charry chew of a smoky bagel was something that I didn’t know I needed.

Obviously the options for what you can order are endless—you can get a plain bagel, a bagel with a smear, a dozen, or a bagel sandwich. And let me be the first to tell you that these bagel sandwiches aren’t like anything you’ve had before.

The thought that went into each and every option is clearly tasted with every bite. I would say there’s something for everybody, but not everybody can take the flavor bombs that Bodega is pumping out of their woodfire cannon.

Patrons have the option to buy a single bagel, a half dozen, a baker’s dozen, or—in my opinion the best way order a bagel—as a sandwich.

After looking at the menu, I couldn’t be swayed from ordering the Spicy Mama. I

would recommend getting it on a sesame bagel, but any of the artisanal bagel options work perfectly.

Fork tender pork bulgogi, Korean style barbeque meat, sits in the middle of the sliced and toasted bagel along with crunchy peanut slaw and a gooey, fiery kimchi cream cheese. The finished sandwich encompasses all flavors: salty, sweet, sour, bitter, and ultra savory umami.

The kimchi—a staple Korean dish made by fermenting vegetables with spices—is a “nod to Kay’s heritage, pun intended, we will be featuring Kay’s family Kimchi recipe in jars for sale at the Bodega.” Masters confessed when I inquired as to the origin of the store’s special recipes.

On the sandwich list you will also find The Donna—a turkey, avocado, and bacon option, which tastes perfect on an everything bagel.

On the more classic bagel shop side of the menu you will find the Lox and Schmear. It is a hearty dish created with delicate smoked salmon, sharp red onion, cucumber, arugula, and house made lemon caper cream cheese.

The Veggie meets all the needs of non-meat eaters. This sandwich features vibrant pickled purple beets layered with sprouts, radishes, and spiced walnuts. In the place of cream cheese, hummus is slathered on.

I will encourage everyone to try multiple options because each sandwich has its own unique flavor profile and each is worth tasting.

As I mentioned at the start of this thing, the new store, or bodega, goes way beyond bagels.

Masters explains, “Bodega itself will house not only delicious wood fired bagels, sandwiches, and yum-yums, but also featuring local specialty foods like Libbie Summer’s Yum Yum Smile Shop products, and Hale tea, healthy pick up snacks and local craft beer and wine. Tybee Wine Festival is eleven years strong

NOW IN its eleventh year, the Tybee Wine Festival is a favorite event for locals and tourists alike.

The laid-back weekend is a fundraiser for the Tybee Post Theater.

“It really is amazing that it has had such longevity,” says Melissa Turner, executive director of the Tybee Post Theater. “The same folks come year in and year out—they just love it. We have folks that plan their vacation around all three events, rent a house or a condo down here and make a long weekend out of it.”

The festival starts Thursday night with Wine and Dine at the Deck, an exclusive multi-course dinner with wine pairings.

Friday night is the Pickin’ and Shuckin’ with Beer and Bubbles at the Tybee Post Theater, where guests can shuck oysters or enjoy BBQ. Of course, the main attraction is the Grand Wine Tasting on Saturday. The tasting event offers over a hundred wines international wines and samples from Tybee restaurants.

“What’s really easy about it is you buy

one ticket and you just come in through the gate and eat and drink and listen to music and participate in the silent auction, all for one price,” says Turner. “It’s not complicated—we don’t have drink tickets or food tickets or anything like that. We just try to make it as easy and fun as we possibly can.”

In the distributor booths, representatives from the vineyards will be on hand to tell you about the wine—but, as Turner says, only if you’re interested.

“Or if you just come and say, ‘What’s your pinot grigio?’ they’ll pour you a pinot grigio,” says Turner.

As Turner describes, the laid-back nature of the festival makes it a huge hit.

You don’t have to be a sommelier-level wine snob to enjoy.

“You can taste as many [wines] as you want or as few as you want,” says Turner.

“You don’t even need to be a drinker for this particular festival. We call it a wine festival, but it’s really kind of a fun outdoor springtime festival.”

Turner notes that the event couldn’t happen without their generous partners.

“The distributors will decide which wines they want to highlight, and they’re donating the wine to us,” says Turner. “The restaurants out here on Tybee—it’s a tough

time for Tybee restaurants when they’re not fully staffed up and summer hasn’t really begun yet, but they all come out and they do their good tastings for free for us as well. Without the wine distributors and the Tybee restaurants, we’d never be able to do this.”

The Tybee Post Theater has been a beloved part of the community for years.

Built in the Fort Screven Historic District in 1930, the theater hosts concerts and theater productions as well as special screenings. Their screening of “A Star Is Born” in March sold out, which, to Turner, is exemplary of why the theater is needed.

“That shows what the theater has brought to the community, and I’m not talking about just Tybee, but Wilmington, Whitemarsh, Talahi, and Savannah too,” says Turner. “To fill up a movie theater with a movie that’s been out for five months? it just shows that people are really embracing the theater and really appreciate that it’s here. EVERY YEAR, the Banff Mountain Film Festival brings the best outdoors/environment themed documentaries and shorts to the Lucas Theatre for an evening of enlightening entertainment.

This year’s screening at the Lucas might be the most enlightening edition yet.

“This is without question the most diverse lineup we’ve had in 15 years of sponsoring the Banff Mountain Film Festival – seven years in Savannah,” says Katherine P. Smith of main regional sponsor Half-Moon Outfitters.

The diversity includes the characteristics of the highlighted people in the films as well as the subject matter.

“One film takes you into a Blackfoot tribe bareback horse race. Another brings you into the world of African-American mountain climbers,” Smith says.

“And we think Savannah might particularly like the story of the hairdresser that helps save beavers between occasional tequila shots,” laughs Smith, talking about the film The Beaver Believers,” she laughs.

Feel of Vision explores the life of a man who lost his eyesight in a hunting accident and is now a paddler.

How to Run 100 Miles is about one man’s journey from homelessness and learning disabilities to life as a runner.

The new focus on diversity is a far cry from old stereotypes about environmentalism, and environmental filmmaking, mostly dealing with affluent white people.

“Society is changing and these films

refelct that. It’s what people want now,” Smith says.

“We’ve been limited by what filmmakers have been producing -- we can only screen what is made. But there’s really a demand for these kinds of stories. The diversity you’ll see at this year’s event comes from that group of filmmakers for whom telling these different stories from different viewpoints is a real priority.”

The event is part of the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour, which hits the road soon after the signature main event at the Banff Centre in Canada. / Refashioning this review as a church’s confessional booth, let me admit right off the bat that I wasn’t the biggest fan of Guillermo del Toro’s acclaimed Hellboy flicks. Bless me, Father, for I have taken the minority opinion: While I admired Ron Perlman’s irresistible performance in both 2004’s Hellboy and 2008’s Hellboy II: The Golden Army, the Hellboy-Liz Sherman relationship in the first film, and the cool critters in Part Deux, I found the storytelling clumsy rather than clever, the atmosphere oppressive rather than immersive, and, with a few exceptions, the characters colorless rather than captivating (even Abe Sapien didn’t exhibit much personality until he hired a new agent, changed his name to Amphibian Man, and reemerged in del Toro’s Oscar-winning The Shape of Water).

Skimming my dusty review of the ’04 original, I even see where I wrote that its worst moments brought to mind the infamous 2003 screen version of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, a sentence that even I recognize as outright blasphemy.

With that off my chest — and with a couple of subsequent Hail Marys and a bout of self-flagellation, to boot — it’s time to admit that, in comparison to the new Hellboy, those earlier incarnations of Mike Mignola’s popular comic series now seem positively heavenly.

Functioning more as a reboot than as the originally planned sequel (axed once it became clear neither del Toro nor Perlman would be involved), this Hellboy represents less a hot night on the town and more

a cold shower meant to douse excitable feelings that this flop has no intention of alleviating or even addressing.

As was the case with Spider-Man: Homecoming, the film’s creators were adamant about not serving up yet another origin film.

Yet unlike the Spidey saga, this picture is so awash in exposition (including, yes, a genesis sequence) that it would be safe to state that some fibbing was taking place.

The picture actually opens even before — way before — the titular demon first climbs out of the bowels of Hell during World War II. It commences back in the time of King Arthur and Merlin, as the pair manage to defeat Nimue the Blood Queen (Milla Jovovich), hack her up into enough separate pieces to fit into an Evil Dead sequel, and bury the various body parts in separate locations so she can’t ever return.

Of course, whereas a fool and his money are soon parted (e.g. those who paid a combined $162 million to see Grown Ups), the same can’t be said about a Blood Queen and her appendages, meaning that she finally pulls herself together (literally) and returns in our present day to continue her reign of terror.

It’s up to B.P.R.D. (Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense) operative Hellboy (David Harbour) to stop her, and he’s aided in his efforts by his adoptive father Trevor Bruttenholm (Ian McShane), a psychic teenager (Sasha Lane), and a B.P.R.D. agent (Daniel Dae Kim) who can turn into a jaguar when necessary (claws and effect, as it were).

Interestingly, I watched both Hellboy and The Kid Who Would Be King (now out

on Blu-ray) on the same day – some sort of low-key cosmic alignment since both films deal heavily with the legend of King Arthur. The kid flick is by far the better bet, partly because none of its fantastical musings prove to be insulting like the liberties taken in this slog.

And whereas The Kid/King is rated PG and del Toro’s Hellboy flicks were rated PG-13, this one is rated R. That in itself is no problemo, but the finished product doesn’t resemble an R-rated film made by adults as much as an R-rated film made by teenagers who think it would be cool to pepper their project with as much profanity and as many gory interludes as possible.

Hellboy goes even more overboard than Logan in adding naughty bits just for the, uh, hell of it — unlike, say, Deadpool, which did a great job of making its R rating feel like a natural fit, these other pictures bring to mind the adage, “Just because you can doesn’t mean you should.”

Neil Marshall, who kicked off his career with the terrific one-two punch of Dog Soldiers and The Descent (the latter making my 10 Best list for 2006), gets swallowed up by this dour and depressing undertaking, and it begs the question as to whether it was yet another case of an indie filmmaker turning drunk and irresponsible when handed a sizable budget or (as has been suggested) it was another sad instance of a studio not allowing a filmmaker to fully explore his own vision.

In either case, it’s unfortunate to see Marshall attached to this boondoggle,

// The latest likable effort from Laika, Missing Link may not match the stopmotion animation studio’s previous endeavors like Coraline and ParaNorman but nevertheless displays enough charm and whimsy to satisfy the small fry. Placating the adults in their midst might be another matter.

Hugh Jackman, whose prior voice work was in the service of the animation outfits at Aardman, DreamWorks and Warner, here joins the Laika cause by lending his soothing pipes to the character of Sir Lionel Frost, an English adventurer who travels the world hoping to prove the existence of famous mythological creatures.

After encountering (but failing to document) the Loch Ness Monster, Sir Lionel gets an invitation to come track down the Sasquatch in the Pacific Northwest.

Sir Lionel easily finds the creature (Zach Galifianakis), the reason being that the invite was sent by the Sasquatch himself.

A talkative type, the affable beast names himself Susan and reveals that he wants Sir Lionel to lead him to his long-lost relatives, the Yetis residing in the Himalayas.

Sir Lionel agrees to the task, and they’re soon joined by his former girlfriend, the wealthy Adelina Fortnight (Zoe Saldana).

But the hissable Lord Piggot-Dunceby (Stephen Fry) doesn’t want Sir Lionel’s discovery to become public, so he hires an assassin named Willard Stenk (voiced by Timothy Olyphant but suspiciously drawn like Jackie Earle Haley) to kill everyone involved.

The Laika brand of animation always provides a welcome reprieve from the visually stale style of toons offered by everyone not named Aardman, Pixar or Disney, and the gentle humor is likewise appreciated as a respite from the cruder gags that too often have become the norm.

It’s just a shame that the characters aren’t more invigorating — Mr. Link/Susan is actually a rather one-note figure, and Adelina adds nothing substantial to the proceedings, created solely for the purpose of providing Sir Lionel with an obligatory love interest.

And although there are some enterprising bits when it comes to the staging of these stop-motion creations, the actual jokes putter as often as they pop.

SHAZAM!

The second Captain Marvel movie to be released this spring (yup, this character was originally known by that name from his creation in 1939 until his rebranding in 1972), DC’s valiant effort doesn’t soar as high as its Marvel counterpart, though there’s still a hefty amount to enjoy in this

thematically loose-limbed undertaking.

Whereas the DCU has often been criticized for its why-so-serious approach to mythmaking, it’s obvious the suits have finally opted to take a hint, injecting a light amount of humor into Wonder Woman, a sizable amount of humor into Aquaman, and now a gargantuan amount of humor into Shazam!

It’s an appreciated gesture in most circles, though I personally didn’t mind the darker underpinnings in past DC flicks (particularly Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy).

At any rate, it’s not like DC is reinventing the wheel here, as even a cursory glance at Marvel opuses like, say, Guardians of the Galaxy or Thor: Ragnarok can attest.

Djimon Hounsou, who’s been appearing in superhero sagas with almost as much regularity as Chris Evans (he previously popped up in Captain Marvel, Aquaman, Guardians of the Galaxy, and even as the title hero in an animated Black Panther TV show), here sets the story in motion as an elderly wizard who needs to bestow his formidable powers onto someone worthy of them.

He bypasses young Thaddeus Sivana back in the mid-70s and instead waits until now, when he believes he has found a true champion in Billy Batson (Asher Angel), a foster boy who shares a home with disabled comic-book fan Freddy Freeman (Jack Dylan Grazer) and other goodhearted kids. Whenever he utters the word “Shazam,” Billy turns into an adult superhero (Zachary Levi) whose formidable powers include, umm…

Neither Billy nor Freddy are sure, so cue the amusing sequences in which the pair attempt to determine exactly what Shazam can do. (Turn invisible? Stop bullets? Leap tall buildings in a single bound?)

Meanwhile, the now adult Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong) has spent his life trying to attain the power that was within his grasp as a child, although he has no plans to use it for the betterment of mankind. To be fair, Billy isn’t exactly displaying heroic qualities, either, as he’s more interested in attaining fame and fortune — or at least ample YouTube hits and a few quarters tossed at his feet as he shows off his awesome super-tricks.

Shazam! is good for some laughs, but in an increasingly crowded landscape in which superheroes are allowed to be philosophical, guilt-ridden, godlike, and even meta (what up, Deadpool?), there’s something comparatively puny about this film.

Its drama (particularly the familial material) feels warmed-over, its conflicts feel boilerplate, and the majority isn’t quite bright enough or inventive enough to overcome a third act free-forall that involves numerous superbeings and demonic entities slugging it out in a

repetitive CGI loop that neither illuminates nor entertains.

LITTLE

/ There’s a humorous moment when the protagonist hears a tinkling sound from below and looks down, only to see a giant piano keyboard on the floor underneath their feet. It’s a clever homage to that classic scene from 1988’s Big, the Penny Marshall hit in which a little boy finds himself trapped in Tom Hanks’ adult body thanks to some vaguely supernatural shenanigans.

It’s a scene that’s right at home in the new film Little … only this scene actually isn’t in Little. Instead, it’s in Shazam!, another current film about mismatched bodies. Were that there were any moments of comparable wit and inventiveness in Little, a bland comedy whose moniker reflects its overarching puniness.

The manner in which folks switch bodies (Freaky Friday) or ages (13 Going on 30) or even gender (the recent What Men Want) is never the point in these types of films, but Little is particularly lazy in setting up its curse.

Nevertheless, this is in line with the rest of the film, which is a surprisingly drab affair that never allows for more than an occasional fleeting smile (actual belly laughs are sadly MIA).

Regina Hall, coming off a 2018 which saw her delivering an award-winning turn in Support the Girls and co-starring in the 10 Best-worthy The Hate U Give, is here in manic-Monday mode, cast as a woman who was bullied as a child and has grown up to now be the bully to everyone else. \ Her Jordan Sanders is a fire-breathing tyrant, a CEO with OCD (a deadly combo) who enjoys barking at those around her, particularly her mild-mannered assistant April (Issa Rae).

But an encounter with a little girl with a toy wand results in a curse that finds Jordan waking up the next day back in the body of her younger, school-age self (played by 14-year-old Black-ish co-star Marsai Martin, who also serves as an executive producer — the youngest in history — on this film).

With the reluctant aid of April, Jordan must find a way to reverse the curse — first, though, her diminutive body means that she has to return to the classroom and again risk being bullied.

For those expecting to see a movie starring top-billed Regina Hall, the problem is that, by the very nature of the story, she’s only around at the beginning and at the end.

To compensate with another grown-up, writer-director Tina Gordon Chism and co-scripter Tracy Oliver (working from an idea conceived by Martin when she was 10 years old) beef up the size of Rae’s role to

the extent that April actually becomes the primary player.

But who cares about her comparatively drab character when all the potentially interesting material involves Jordan in all her incarnations?

The lack of a center affects all areas of the film, with half-baked romantic travails for both Jordan and April and lapses in logic when it comes to believable character transformations (a “Three Months Later” placard toward the end of the film skips over crucial scenes that would allow us to witness and understand all the changes).

If Little at least delivered on its comedic material or provided some sort of emotional resonance, much could be forgiven.

But the laughs are largely lame and the pathos utterly nonexistent.

PET SEMATARY

// It’s not like there wasn’t any room for improvement. The 1989 adaptation of Stephen King’s Pet Sematary can boast of countless fans, but there are just as many folks (myself included) who find it a crudely made concoction hampered by clumsy pacing and, aside from the magnificent Fred Gwynne, undercooked performances.

This new edition, also named Pet Sematary, seeks to correct those deficiencies with slicker production values, better emoting, and even a twist not found in either the novel or previous film.

As before, the Creeds – dad Louis (Jason Clarke), mom Rachel (Amy Seimetz), and young children Ellie (Jete Laurence) and Gage (played by twins Hugo and Lucas Lavoie) — move to a small Maine town, where their new abode happens to rest on the edge of a highway that’s home to countless trucks that barrel through at all hours of the day and night. The Creeds meet across-the-street neighbor Jud Crandall (John Lithgow, effective in a turn that’s less folksy and more gravelly than the one provided by Gwynne), who informs them of a pet cemetery that rests deep in the woods of their property.

It’s only later that Jud alerts Louis to the fact that anything that is dead and subsequently buried beyond the cemetery, in ground deemed “sour” by long-ago Native American inhabitants, will come back in an altered state.

The first stretch of this P.S. is more reputable than that of the junkier ’89 model, but it also isn’t much fun, hurriedly paying somber lip service to the conventions of the story rather than engaging viewers in its darker implications. But then the massive deviation from the original text occurs, and it promises to spin the tale off into a different and possibly more thoughtprovoking direction. CS
