ANOTHER PETITION on Change.org made the usual rounds this past week, this one urging the City of Savannah to preserve the old Seaboard Freight Station at 703 Louisville Road, aka the former home of Muse Arts Warehouse.

As an ardent advocate of historic preservation, and a proud alumnus of a production at Muse, I certainly appreciate the sentiment and wholeheartedly endorse any practical effort to save the building.

In this case, that would mean trying to enforce a condition on the developer that the original bones of the depot be an integral part of their new design.

Mayor DeLoach has been correct in calling for remedying situations similar to what happened with the Seaboard depot: when one buyer secures a variance, then flips the property to a new developer with a new plan, variances staying intact.

But City Council places limitations on development all the time when it suits them, sometimes whimsically so. It’s disingenuous to pretend otherwise.

The difference comes when citizens are engaged early and often, to force them to do so for the right reasons.

Democrats still have a hard time forgiving her for working closely with former Republican State Senate President Eric Johnson.

It’s going to be a big election year — and it’s just the second week in January, folks!

THE AMBITIOUS New Hampstead development came one step closer to reality last week, as City Council approved a zoning tweak to move the concept along.

New Hampstead will join other massive but largely unremarked new developments in West Chatham, such as the Highlands subdivision.

I think this paradigm shift — economically, culturally, geographically, and politically — might be the most underreported

The time to get in the way of the demolition of the Seaboard depot was some time ago, when citizen pressure could have been a real game-changer.

But as is the case with most online petitions, it might be too little, too late.

Don’t get me wrong — I’m not trying to discourage civic engagement. Far from it.

I’m urging more civic engagement, just much earlier, when it could actually have made a major difference.

This building changed hands, and Muse was kicked out, in late 2016/early 2017.

Then the building was sold again, with the City selling a key surplus tract to the new developer this past November.

I hope to be proven wrong, but probably the only way now to stop or alter the development of 703 Louisville and the razing of the depot is if the developer makes a unilateral decision to bow to public opinion.

Public sentiment, strongly expressed, can change public policy. The City’s abandonment of the Fire Fee is the most recent example of a successful citizen revolt.

But as far as the old Seaboard depot is concerned, the time to get in the way of that plan was quite some time ago, when citizen pressure could have been a real game-changer. We’re now reduced to throwing a Hail Mary late in the game.

While it’s a bit ridiculous that City Council specifically insists on weighing in on each and every liquor license, and doing things like meticulously measuring the size of advertisements in a convenience store’s windows (true story), citizens can use a bit of jiu-jitsu to make that ridiculousness work for them.

If the City is willing to micromanage small business to such an absurd extent, perhaps we can demand that they also micromanage large developers.

SPEAKING OF POLITICIANS, the campaign season is already heating up, with several announcements that will affect the City elections later this year.

Detric Leggett announced that he will opt for a rematch with Bill Durrence — now an incumbent — for City Council’s Second District.

While the two men famously posed for a widely shared photo in a gesture of solidarity after Durrence’s victory in 2015, the party has soured since then, with some of Durrence’s critics saying that he forgot why he was elected and who elected him.

Community activist Alicia Miller Blakely will run for Alderperson At Large, Post One, currently occupied by Carol Bell.

Larry Myers will take on incumbent John Hall in the Third District.

The highly controversial Sixth District alderman, Tony Thomas, will face at least one opponent, law enforcement veteran Kurtis Purtee. (Any serious attempt to unseat Thomas will depend on a minimal number of challengers, so as not to split the opposition vote.)

And an old name in Savannah politics, Regina Thomas, announced she is again running for Mayor of Savannah.

Thomas’s last bid was in the crowded 2011 field, out of which Edna Jackson eventually emerged triumphant.

Before that, Thomas had a successful tenure in the Georgia legislature as a Democratic Representative and State Senator.

Thomas’s well-known ability to bridge partisan divides is both a help and a hindrance — moderates and pragmatists will find her attractive, while staunch

story of 2018.

The difference here is that New Hampstead will be its own Planned Unit Development (PUD), a legal designation allowing a wide range of inclusive multiple uses, including park facilities.

Generally, a PUD designation is good in that it allows more oversight of the plan in order to enhance specifically identified common needs, such as more affordable housing.

A PUD designation is not so good, however, in that it can encourage more sprawl, with diminished returns from the tax base since so much of the new residences will be covered by homestead tax exemptions.

As our Urbanist View columnist Jason Combs wrote back in June, this kind of planned sprawl directly affects the City’s ability to fund basic services, and leads to bad ideas like the now-defunct Fire Fee. “There’s your chronic budget imbalance,” Combs wrote. “Too much low density ‘city’ that doesn’t produce enough revenue to support the infrastructure, services, and maintenance that it demands.

Thus, the Fire Fee.” This sprawl is all fueled, of course, by the City of Savannah’s unquenchable thirst to annex more and more of West Chatham.

It’s odd to see so much business in front of City Council these days coming out of the Pooler and Bloomingdale areas, but that’s how much the City of Savannah has expanded — with taxpayers on the hook to cover any unforeseen expenses. CS

THIS YEAR marks the 90th birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., legendary civil rights icon.

Honor his life and legacy with various events around our area.

First up is the TybeeMLK Parade and Human Rights Celebration, taking place Saturday, Jan. 12.

“It’s a labor of love for the city and for businesses,” says Julia Pearce, organizer of the Tybee celebration. “We’re always a week ahead of the one in Savannah, but we’re in conjunction with them—we use a lot of resources from the Savannah observance.”

Tybee’s parade festivities begin with a parade at 2 p.m. The parade begins at the 14th Street Parking Lot and goes ten blocks. The Grand Marshal this year is Dr. Ann Levett, superintendent of the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System.

“The parade is just the hook,” explains Pearce. “What we’re really doing is having a human rights program and celebration. We invite the beloved community; we believe that to be people who live in the community, all communities coming together to celebrate this great man.”

The TybeeMLK committee also annually awards a Dreamer Humanitarian Award, and this year the award goes to James Eldo Hartz.

Hartz owns the historic Carbo House, which provides long-term affordable housing on the island.

Pearce notes that everyone will be represented at the celebration, notably a speaker from the mosque.

“We think it’s important, especially in the climate we have today,” says Pearce.

“Dr. King was about bringing people together. Our theme this year is Dr. King’s quote, ‘We are interrelated in a single garment of destiny.’ We are! We are one race, one world, one God—all this division is not good for us.”

TybeeMLK also hosted an essay contest for students, and the winners, Camilla Burg and Ann Nguyen from Islands High School, will be honored.

That’s just the beginning of our area’s festivities. The following Saturday, Jan. 19, the city of Richmond Hill hosts its first ever Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Parade and Celebration.

Partnering with Unity in the Community, the parade is led by Rep. Carl Gillard and begins at 10 a.m. at Richmond Hill Primary School.

After the parade, head to J.F. Gregory Park for a celebration with entertainment, vendors, and speaking appearances

by Congressman Buddy Carter and Rev. Thurmond N. Tillman.

Prior to Savannah’s parade, participate in the Citywide Memorial Worship Service. Led by Rev. David F. Richards III of the New Hope AME Church in Atlanta, the service takes place at the Second African

Environmentalism and the state legislature: A preview GEORGIA environmentalism is an interesting paradox. We have some progressive laws on the books, many of them from the 1970’s.

But these days, we’re not exactly following California, which is launching its own satellite into space to track climate change, in a rebuke of the Trump administration.

As Georgia’s legislature prepares to meet in Atlanta, what environmental groups want – California-like action on issues like climate change and restoring Obama-era clean water rules – and what they’ll actually get is like the difference between how that Big Mac looks in the photo and when you unwrap it.

To prevent disappointment, I offer this guide to what environmental legislation stands a good chance at surviving the upcoming 40-day Republican-dominated General Assembly and becoming law.

And here’s a hint. If you’re looking for a rebuke of Trump, I have a satellite to sell you.

“We’ve never gotten any pro-nature legislation in Georgia without bipartisan support,” says Neill Herring, a veteran conservation lobbyist. “They’re not hot button issues and they don’t get quick responses. But they are bipartisan and when we get our issues to the floor, we win.

funding, exciting! Actually, those trust funds have been collecting millions of dollars in fees for decades but only about half the money goes to their intended uses, which is to clean up hazardous waste sites, including several in Chatham County.

A proposed law would fix the “lie” of these trust funds and speed up our community’s environmental recovery. The House passed the measure in the last session but the Lt. Governor blocked a vote in the Senate.

Now we have a new Lt. Governor who voted for the measure in the House. So environmentalists are optimistic.

New leadership also might right a wrong that slipped into law in the waning moments of last year’s General Assembly, when Georgia Power got itself a potential $12 million exemption to coal ash “tipping fees.” Electric utilities pay these fees to counties in order to dump their toxic coal ash into landfills, including here in Chatham County.

The exemption makes Georgia welcoming for out-of-state coal ash, nasty stuff that contains arsenic and lead left over from the dying coal industry. Candidate Brian Kemp said that he didn’t want Georgia to be a coal ash dumping ground. He can keep his word by siding with the coal ash opposition, something that unites both rural and urban voters.

Kemp also repeated his opposition to drilling for oil off the Georgia coast. So, would he sign a resolution opposing offshore oil? A bipartisan group of lawmakers might test him.

commas. In 2015, the state Supreme Court ruled that, because of a misplaced comma in a state law that protects Georgia streams, the law doesn’t protect most Georgia streams!

The Supreme Court recommended that lawmakers fix the glitch. Lawmakers have been taking their merry old time studying it ever since.

Conservationists are hoping 2019 is the year for stream protection, the kind of issue that gets Republican-leaning trout fishermen on the same side as Democraticleaning activist types.

And GOP lawmakers can tell their base that they’re not being enviro-commies, just fixing enviro-commas. After several stalled attempts, pay attention to riparian

legislation.

Finally, if none of this excites your inner Al Gore, remember that even in Georgia there’s a way to do more. And that’s actually to tell your state lawmaker to act on things like climate change and bigger national issues.

Conservation groups plan to spend several hours on February 20 taking citizen advocates into the state capitol. There, you can lobby your lawmakers in person.

Two days, two homicides to bring in new year

The Savannah Police Department detectives are investigating two homicides to begin 2019: the fatal shooting of a 20-yearold male Tuesday evening Jan.1, and an early Wednesday morning killing of a 17-year-old male Jan. 2.

“On Jan. 1 at around 11:30 p.m., officers responded to the 100 block of Tibet Avenue on report of an unresponsive person. Once on scene, they located Jamar Davis, Jr. who was deceased with an apparent gunshot wound,” police report.

Police are treating the death as a homicide.

In the second incident, at around 12:30 a.m. Jan. 2, “officers responded to the 2500 block of Bull Street in reference to a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located shooting victim, Tyrese Carter, 17, suffering from life-threatening injuries. He was transported to the hospital where he succumbed to those injuries,” police report.

Police say that “persons with knowledge have been interviewed.”

Savannah Police’s Criminal Investigation Unit is investigating a shooting that resulted in the death of a 23-year-old man on Dec. 29.

“About 8:30 p.m. officers responded to Memorial Medical Center after a man with a gunshot wound arrived was transported in a personal vehicle. The man was identified as Stefon Wright. He later succumbed to his injuries,” police report.

An investigation revealed the shooting took place in the area of Treat Avenue and Iowa Street. The circumstances leading up the shooting remain under investigation.

The final murder of 2018 brings the year-end tally of the total for Savannah Police Dept. jurisdiction to 29, matching the number for 2017 (when the jurisdiction was combined city/county).

“On Friday, Jan. 4 at around 5:30 p.m., officers responded to a call of a person with a gun at 32nd and Dieter streets. As officers responded, they observed individuals fleeing towards a residence on the 1500 block of E. 32nd Street,” police report.

A subsequent investigation led to the search of the residence, which resulted in the seizure of 15 pounds of marijuana, five firearms, cellphones and counterfeit currency.

“The following day, on Jan. 5, task force officers responded to Allen Avenue and Winburn Street in reference to individuals partaking in criminal activity in the area.

When officers attempted to make contact with the individuals, they fled on foot, but were quickly apprehended,” police say.

A total of five firearms were seized in this investigation, two of which were reported stolen.

“I commend the outstanding work of our task force officers, whose relentless dedication to combating violent crime has resulted in multiple arrests, the removal of firearms from convicted felons and the elimination of a large amount of drugs from our community,” said Chief of Police Roy Minter.

Rakhi Desai of Houston didn’t think much at first of the gift she brought home from a white elephant party in midDecember -- a brown stuffed bear with a stitched-on heart. As she looked it over later, Desai noticed the words “Neptune Society” stitched on its foot “and then I started to feel, and it’s almost like little pebbles or rocks” inside, she told KTRKTV. That’s when it hit her: The bear was filled with someone’s cremated remains.

The friend who brought the bear to the gift exchange got it at an estate sale, so Desai called the Neptune Society, hoping to reunite the bear with the family it belongs to, but the organization doesn’t track the bears. However, there is a name on the bear’s tag, and Desai is hoping to find the owner through that. “(T)his bear is very special to somebody and belongs in somebody’s family,” she said.

Vanessa Elizabeth Helfant, 38, of Knoxville, Tennessee, floated a “dog bites man” defense at her DUI hearing on Dec. 13, arguing that several parked cars struck her on March 25, 2017. The jury, however, didn’t buy her story after hearing evidence: Witnesses at the scene followed Helfant to her destination, and when officers arrived and knocked on the door, Helfant called 911 to report people knocking on her door.

WATE reported that she eventually admitted that she had drunk half a pint of vodka and smoked marijuana. Helfant, who had no prior offenses, was convicted and faces at least 48 hours in jail and her license will be suspended for a year.

Which Witch?

Tiffany Butch, 33, of Timmins, Ontario, Canada, may go down in history not for her psychic gifts, but for being the last person ever charged in Canada with “pretending to practice witchcraft.” On Dec. 11, Butch, whose nickname is the White Witch of the North, was charged under Section 365 of the Criminal Code for demanding money in return for lifting a curse. Two days later, that law was repealed. Marc Depatie, spokesperson for the Timmons police force, said Butch gave a customer “a sense of foreboding that a dreadful thing was about to happen to their family ...”

But Butch denies the charge, saying other psychics framed her. “People proclaimed me a witch here and gave me a nickname, but I’m not a witch. I’m a psychic,” she told CBC News. Butch is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 22.

On Jan. 1, Camron Jean-Pierre, an 11-year-old Brooklyn, New York, boy, lost his life after apparently suffering an allergic reaction to the smell of the fish his family was cooking for dinner, reported the New York Daily News. His parents used an unspecified medical device to try to help him, but he lost consciousness and emergency services were called. Camron was taken to Brookdale Hospital, but he couldn’t be revived. Scientists have noted that people with food allergies can react strongly to odors from food, and inhaling these odors can cause extreme asthmatic reactions.

Asparagus is healthy and delicious. But for 63-year-old Jemima Packington of Bath, England, the columnar vegetable is much more: Packington is an asparamancer, a person who can foretell the future by tossing the spears into the air and seeing how they land. “When I cast the asparagus, it creates patterns and it is the patterns I interpret,” Packington said. “I am usually about 75 to 90 percent accurate.” In fact, out of 13 predictions she made for 2018, 10 of them came true.

Drivin N Cryin brings retrospective show to Tybee Singer and songwriter Kevn Kinney looks back and looks ahead

SINCE THE ‘80s, Drivin N Cryin has walked the line between criminally underrated and critically lauded. They’re a band that isn’t confined by genre, and often seem to musically do whatever they want. That sense of creative freedom has awarded them some commercial success over the years — particularly with their acclaimed 1989 album Mystery Road and the follow up Fly Me Courageous.

The band has experienced something of a resurgence in the last several years, thanks to a multi-generational following as well as some higher profile artists covering their songs. Songwriter and band leader Kevn Kinney formed the band in Atlanta in 1985, and continues to push the group ahead with a consistent output of new music. The band is prepping a new album 16 for 2019, but is set to start the year off with

a pair of shows at the Tybee Post Theater on Jan. 11 and 12.

Ahead of the sold-out shows, which Kinney says will be a unique and special career retrospective, we spoke to Kinney about the evolution of the band, his guitar heroes, and that Darius Rucker cover.

When you started this band, was it a vehicle for anything you wanted to explore musically? Or did you say, “I’m going to do a straight up rock thing, or Southern rock thing, or folk thing,” etc.?

Kevn Kinney: It started off definitely not a southern rock thing. The southern rock part of Drivin N Cryin was kind of just a fluke. We had a song called “Honeysuckle Blue” which is really about New York City, and a radio station picked it up. It has a Skynyrd-esque kind of thing, but it’s also part Television and part other things.

I’ve never owned a Lynyrd Skynyrd

record. I’ve become friends with them when we play with them, and I really like them for totally different reasons than other people do. They had guitar cables and a limited light show. They didn’t have all this pizzazz.

Drivin N Cryin has always been, for me, whatever we want to do. We called ourselves more of a psychedelic band in the first few years. We were attempting to be a psychedelic band, but I didn’t want psychedelic-meaning-sitars. I wanted psychedelic meaning challenging - it messes with your preconceived notions of what you think this is. So Scarred But Smarter has a little bit of jazz on it, some Sabbath riffs, some Hendrix licks. It’s got that X and Ramones, and that almost pre-Nirvana thing.

If you think about even the psych-rock bands of the ‘60s like 13th Floor Elevators, it was exactly what you said - just sort of challenging music for the time.

Kinney: And it was raw, and it was unexpected. Our thing was, let’s have a rock song and actually put a poem in there.

Which is what I learned from being a Patti Smith fan.

Who were your heroes growing up as a guitar player? There is the Richard Lloyd/Television thing that happens with the guitar interplay, and the Ramones punk rock - you’re playing Mosrites and that sort of thing. Were those guys your heroes growing up?

Kinney: Yeah. Johnny Ramone was definitely one of my heroes. I have three other guitar heroes. Robin Trower — and Robin Trower wouldn’t be Robin Trower without Hendrix. Lenny Kaye from Patti Smith Group is one of my heroes. Johnny Ramone, I love Jimmy Page, I love Tony Iommi. All the riffs come from Tony Iommi.

Kinney: Unreal, and he’s a little underappreciated. Pete Townshend, of course, with the jingle jangle. Duane Eddy and Glen Campbell for all those solos that I do, Link Wray, and then for the jangle and the counter melodies I’d say Peter Buck.

R.E.M. is my favorite band of all time.

Kinney: I would love for some DJ to put together the intro licks to R.E.M. records and do a mix of it — maybe do “So. Central Rain” and then put it back in the middle, and then at the end construct a song with just Peter Buck’s intro licks.

So much of that stuff was not of its time. He’s a rhythm player, but it’s all hooks.

Kinney: I think that his intro licks are some of the best ever written.

The last thing I want to ask about - I think everybody knows the “Straight to Hell” thing with Darius’ cover. I’m curious if you ever thought a song like that would have a second life like it has in that context?

Kinney: It’s a very courageous and bold thing for Darius to do. If the song was called, “Just Like My Mama Said,” and if it wasn’t so many straight-to-hell’s in a row, it probably would be a hit on country radio.

But I don’t think that Starkville, Mississippi, is quite ready for that yet.

I thought it was fantastic that Darius did that. It took a lot of balls for him to do that.

They even did the video, and he got every country star he knew to be on it. He fucking committed, and I was so proud of him for it. I sing it every night, so I know that there’s a lot of people who are kind of a little ashamed [laughs]. Because I know the Baptists out there, but it’s all good!

We don’t ask people to commit and we’re a heavy metal, hard rock, pop rock band.

But country music is the last closed society of songwriting. It’s the last vestige of the Hollywood system. There were no independent filmmakers writing their own movies in 1940 and 1950. It was about finding the right screenwriter - everybody had their place. Everybody did was Universal said, or what MGM. That’s what you did.

Country music is the last part of that it’s all about the Opry, getting inducted, who you are and who writes the songs. It’s fascinating. People are like, “We don’t need that anymore. We need to go back to old fashioned country and outlaw country.”

Outlaw country is just fine the way it is.

The thing about “Straight to Hell” is that it doesn’t belong to me anymore. So many bands have played it, and I’m so honored that they’ve done it. Bob Schneider has done one of the most beautiful version. I love it because when I’m singing it I see my own movie in my head. I see my own living room as a kid, I see my mom and I see my sister, and it’s all real to me. I hope everybody else has their own version of that.

The thing about Darius’ version that makes it so amazing is that he obviously has this huge platform, but at the end of the day it’s just a song that he loved in college and he just went to bat for it.

Kinney: Because he knows that it’s not about going to hell. It’s about your mom’s preconceived idea that she doesn’t want you to end up like her. She wants you to be in love and love the one that you pick.

The song looks a lot more dangerous than it is. It’s a love song, you know? I wish it would’ve been a bigger hit for him, because I know that he put a lot of effort into it.

He was hoping that the people in country music would’ve embraced it and read the book not the cover.

Thanks so much for taking the time to chat with me. I’m super excited for these shows.

Kinney: Well, they’re going to be very unique Drivin N Cryin shows. It’s kind of my homecoming. It was the first city I ever lived in Georgia. I lived there for a month.

When I moved from Milwaukee I moved to Tybee Island. It was the first time I ever knew that there was salt in the water, the first time I ever saw a palm tree.

SIDELINE BEGAN as a group of musicians who all had careers of their own but needed another outlet. The project soon began to take off unintentionally, and the band found themselves devoting the majority of their professional lives to touring and recording together.

The band is now a force to be reckoned with, recording a number of albums and spending hundreds of days on the road per year. Their latest single, “Thunder Dan,” recently garnered the number one spot on Bluegrass Today’s coveted list of the top 30 bluegrass songs of 2018.

It’s a high honor for a group steadily on the rise in their genre, and they’ll be bringing their acclaimed compositions to Randy Wood’s Pickin’ Parlor in Pooler on Sat., Jan 12.

Banjo player Steve Dilling, a seasoned pro when he formed Sideline, was particularly keen initially on group being something they simply did for fun. Dilling had spent a number of years with legendary

bluegrass band Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out. By 2013, he’d retire from that group but had already been playing with his Sideline bandmates for several years whenever time permitted.

“With IIIrd Tyme Out, we would take off every year from Thanksgiving to New Year’s,” Dilling explains.

“Being raised here [in Raleigh, North Carolina], I had so many friends who were not really bluegrass fans but they would follow my career. They would always say, ‘Let me know when you’re going to play local.’ So I thought one year during December that I’d put together a string of local shows and invite some friends to come play with me.”

Though the initial shows featured a rotating cast, the lineup was ultimately solidified to feature bassist Jason Moore, guitarist Skip Cherryholmes, mandolinist Troy Boone, guitarist Bailey Coe, and fiddle player Daniel Greeson.

“I had some health issues I needed to address, so I had to get off the road. But after I got my health issues straightened out, we decided to start playing some,” he says of his decision to leave IIIrd Tyme Out

and devote himself to Sideline.

“We were just going to play 15 to 20 songs a year, but we’d recorded a CD that got some songs on the charts and bookings picked up. We’re working 100 plus dates a year - I never in my wildest dreams thought I’d be back doing that again.”

For Dilling, his love for the banjo started at a young age. As a child, he became aware of the instrument after hearing “Foggy Mountain Breakdown” in the film Bonnie and Clyde.

He got his first banjo for his 12th birthday, and began taking lessons from a local player who dabbled in the instrument but was more proficient on guitar and mandolin.

“I took a few lessons from him, probably for six months or so. And by that point, I could play better than him basically,” Dilling says. “It was the perfect time for me at that age, because all I did was go to school and play banjo. It came to me fairly easy.”

Dilling’s influences as a banjo player are wide ranging, but his early inspiration came from the likes of Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, Terry Baucom, and J.D. Crowe. He’s developed a style all his own

since the days of studying his heroes - one that is a central part of the Sideline sound.

Even after so many years, Dilling is continually enamored by his instrument thanks in part to the younger energy and spirit of his bandmates and the excitement he gets from the music they play.

“The music that Sideline plays keeps me interested in [banjo]. With our music, I was doing it for myself and creating the music and the sound that I hear and want to put out. That drives me to play,” he says.

“These young guys in the band remind me of myself 25 years ago. Not that I’m not anxious to play, but these days I don’t come off the road and grab my banjo. I’m a husband and a father, and I’m even a grandfather now. So there’s outside interests. But these young guys in the band - we’ll finish a show and get in the bus to head to the next gig and a couple of them already have their [instruments] out and playing. That inspires me.” CS

Dark Thoughts brings ‘At Work’ and more to Savannah Philly-based band comes to Sulfur Studios for a night of high-energy punk rock

How did this band come together?

Jim Shomo: We started in 2013. Amy and I had wanted to form a sort of Ramonesstyle band. We traded some mixes back and forth and I wrote a couple songs, which became our demo. Daniel moved to Philly around this same time. Amy had played with him before and knew he would be a good fit, and, well, here we are.

What were some of your influences early on? The Ramones influence is prominent, but there’s also bits of ‘70s British punk rock, and even the ‘60s MC5 proto-punk stuff to my ear.

Shomo: That’s cool that you mentioned the MC5. I don’t really hear it but Back In The USA is one of my favorite records. Personally I’ve always really liked a lot of ‘77 punk since I was younger.

We all come from a lot of different places, Daniel has a bunch Crass Records knowledge, Amy loves the Toy Dolls and Zyanose, I’m really into USHC and powerpop singles. We’re kind of a mixed bag The Ramones is the thing we all agree on.

What’s your approach when it comes to writing?

Shomo: I just kind of hammer out songs, then sit around for a while and overthink them. I cut a lot of songs, Amy and Daniel sort of dictate what actually makes it to the table - like is it the right speed, does it fit

with the other songs.

I normally have an order in my head and I sort of work to make it so they are excited about it. We’re all snobs so I know they won’t hesitate to tell me it sucks [laughs].

Is there something about Philly that lends itself to the kind of music you make? Is there a scene there?

Shomo: Well I think Philadelphia is a really special place. It’s always up and down but there’s usually things to do and lots of places where you can work on creative stuff. Word to the wise though – don’t move here!

What does punk music mean to you personally?

Shomo: I don’t know man, honestly I hate questions like this. It means so much to so many different people. It’s like if you have to ask, I can’t explain.

What’s the best thing about being in a punk band in 2019?

Shomo: I have no clue - if anything it might be getting worse [laughs]. Touring is great, it’s nice that we are pretty easily connected to a lot of friends on a regular basis. But yeah, I don’t know - new year, same difference.

Have you found there are certain cities that have really embraced what you

guys do? What’s your favorite city to go on tour?

Shomo: It’s definitely a tossup between Richmond and Pittsburgh, but I love playing both those places. Shows there are always fun. The UK is really great, we have a lot of fun playing there. We like playing new places if we can - we played a few random places on our last tour that were pretty fun like Fayetteville, Arkansas.

The show was pretty small, but it was great because now I can tell you we played Fayetteville, Arkansas. Plus the venue had a deal with the gym across the street so Daniel and I went to the steam room!

If you had to pick one essential song from another artist that best defines what rock and roll is to you, what would it be and why?

Shomo: This is actually a really good question. There’s a lot of answers we could probably come up with. “American Ruse” by the MC5 comes to mind. Amy suggested “I Don’t Wanna Walk Around With You” by The Ramones.

DIANA ROSS is one of the most beloved and influential singers in modern music.

As the leader of ‘60s group The Supremes, she achieved monumental success and helped cement the group’s legacy as Motown’s most successful act.

In the solo career that followed, Ms. Ross scored several number one hits and proved to be a prolific artist - culminating in the Guinness Book of World Records calling her the most successful female artist in music history.

These days, Ms. Ross continues to tour and release new music - though this year will be particularly significant for the iconic performer. Her 75th birthday on March 26 will be marked by a yearlong “Diamond Diana” celebration that includes a two-day screening of Diana Ross: Her Life, Love, And Legacy in theaters around the globe. That event will feature the Live In Central Park concert film, which documents her landmark 1983 concert in New York City.

Ahead of her performance at the Johnny Mercer Theatre on Jan. 13, we spoke to Ms. Ross about her storied career, the latest tour, and the upcoming milestone celebration.

Diana Ross: The music we did then was a reflection of our lifestyle and love.

But the songs have really stood the test of time. Music holds memory. You remember the first time you heard “Baby Love” or “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.” You remember where you were.

You’ve done a few Vegas residencies over the last several years - what’s your favorite part about doing a show like that?

The tour that’s coming through Savannah is the Brand New Day Tour. What can we expect from this show, and what are you most excited about on the set list?

Diana Ross: The audiences are really the exciting part for me in the show. There is always a connection that I feel when I am on stage. There are so many special songs. So many memories. The song that everybody asks for all the time is, “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.” I cannot do a show without that one.

Tell me about the Central Park concert - it really was an important moment in your career. Did you have any idea at the time that it would be such an enormous event?

Diana Ross: I love the intimacy of the room I perform in. I love being able to look out and see the faces in the audience. I always say, “When you’re watching me, I’m also watching you.”

Everything is really about give and take.

It’s you and me. It’s us together. It’s never me by myself. My musicians with me are my family away from home. It’s such a blessing this work.

You’ve had one of the most incredible and storied careers in music history. What keeps you interested in and engaged with music at this point in your life?

Diana Ross: I don’t think you go for different as much as you go for best. I really do take the responsibility as a performer that the things that I sing need to be honest and true for me.

I believe in the songs I sing. You keep trying to find something that makes a difference somehow.

I love what I do. It’s not work for me. It’s play.

Diana Ross: I’m a dreamer, and that’s what I did in Central Park. I picked a dream, a goal and then imagined all the details. Then I knew it would happen.

And I had a dream to build a children’s playground in New York City. The playground is still there. I like the idea of giving back. I love children. Everything starts Why is it important to you to celebrate with a dream your 75th, such a milestone birthday?

What’s one memory from those two Diana Ross: I have said that I don’t want days that stands out in your mind, good to celebrate my birthday for just one night, or bad? but for the whole year. SOMETIMES artists need to get away from it all to create work. When other artists go out of town, Tim Foster goes up.

Foster works for Soap on a Rope Window Cleaning, a high-rise cleaning company. He puts those rappelling skills to use in his photography, climbing the downtown buildings to capture a unique view of Savannah’s skyline.

“For the Birds” is on display at In Vino Veritas through Jan. 24.

Foster got his start in metals, jewelry and sculpture at SCAD, but he also became interested in 2D art as well as 3D. “I was kind of moving from jo to job, and then the opportunity to do high-rise cleaning came about, and I decided I’d push myself into that,” recalls Foster.

“I began having shows at Hang Fire—I brought it up to Wes [Daniel] about showing there and had a couple shows there with Jose Ray, an old roommate of mine.

Then a couple years later I did a show at the Jepson, and that moved my art a little more forward the high-rise stuff.”

The photography that’s on display at In Vino Veritas is a collection of Foster’s work over the years. Birds-eye views from the tallest of Savannah’s buildings give the viewer a slight feeling of vertigo.

“On some of them, that was very intentional, but on other ones I wanted to give the idea of timelessness or the feeling that

you could be a bug on the side of a building,” explains Foster. “It’s so easy now with drone photography to go, ‘Oh, that’s easy, I can get up there.’ But to be able to show someone, it’s a very different thing to be focused and taking photos at the same time you’re hanging from a rope. It’s organized to have a little bit of skyline and a lot of ground, to angle it to put people off center and feel as if you’re off balance.”

The perspective on the photographs does make for a bit of a dizzying, surreal feeling, a sentiment that Foster echoes.

“It’s surreal being up there,” he says.

“There’s a lot of graffiti up there from the 1930s. There are little sculptures of torches, and on each one there’s this stuff that says, ‘1920, John Johnson Junior, cloudy day, God bless.’ It’s held for that long as a short graphite pencil.”

Foster’s work is more complicated than using drones or an iPhone with a panorama capability, and that shows through in the final product.

“It’s hard to do panoramas because now they have processes where you have to scan the camera across, but a lot of the ones I’d taken were before those processes had gotten technologically advanced,” says Foster. “It would be me posing and twisting my way around, like 20 or 30 pictures, and then in Photoshop stitching them together and color editing. One thing you notice is you have to take basically three times as many because when you go across, you have to cut off corners.”

Through his work with Soap on a Rope, Foster has scaled almost every building in Savannah that’s over four stories tall, so

he’s very familiar with the development over the years.

“I’ve seen a decline in architecture in Savannah when it comes to hotels,” muses Foster. “It’s not so much the height I’m worried about, but the building materials.

You see things that are marble or limestone or, with the First Union building, there are levels that look like ceramic. Propes Hall above SCAD has a lot of building elements and it’s one of the photographs in the show where you can see fingerprints in the clay from things people have worked on.

“A lot of [the buildings are] hollow.

beautifully designed, but that white cornice at the top is completely hollow. It’s a quarter inch thick. It’s made to last to a degree, but not something I want to be on. When you’re about to go over the edge and knock on it, you can hear how hollow it is. Some of this stuff, you can see flexing to a degree, largely because of trying to be cheaper with interiors.” CS

AN ARTIST in residency at a gallery or studio is a unique opportunity to see the artist’s process laid bare.

Visit on the first day and see a mostly empty space, full of excitement and supplies and not much else. Visit on the last day and see the final product, a gallery-worthy display of art. Every day in between is a chance to shift the progression of the art in any direction.

With an artist like Maggie Hayes, who meticulously researches each project before diving in, her residency is a mustsee at any point.

“Give Me My Flowers While I’m Still Here” is a two-week residency at Welmont.

From now through Jan. 16, Hayes will create a show around the idea of obsession.

Obsession is already a major part of a residency’s essence. What could be more obsessive than living where you work, pushing out work every day for a limited amount of time?

We visited Hayes at Welmont on the second day of her residency.

How did you get started on the idea for 26 this residency?

time. We’re all going to die, but if you’re able to engage in a loving partnership, either the relationship will dissolve, you might die, or the other person might die.

There’s no other way to end it.

I had a great uncle who lived to be 106 and I interviewed him when he was maybe 103 for a school project when I was in third grade. I asked him, “What’s the coolest thing about being 103?” And he said, “There’s not a damn good thing about being this old.” And I was floored.

What’s the main message you want to send with this show?

Hayes: If I could summarize the ethos of the philosophy I’m trying to share, it’s that despite the fact that we will die, it’s so worth it to give ourselves fully to something that we love. Hopefully I can get that point across with all the work.

How do you think you’ll convey that with the work?

Hayes: I’ll be doing some performance art—I did a video project that I called my ritual death. It’s about the ritual of, before you die, scanning your life for anything that has loose ends and loving and forgiving who those loose ends are, as well as yourself. My second project is based on a shamanic ritual of dismemberment, where you allow yourself to be disintegrated or chopped up and allowing your spirit guide to rebuild you.

I’ve got a few beaded pieces that will take me probably the entire two weeks. I have a lot to do between now and then. It should be kind of sensory overload if I can get it all together. FOR THE BIRDS — Tim Foster is an artist who has lived and worked locally for almost two decades. This body of work represents a selection of his photographs taken from his years documenting the Savannah skyline and the detail inherent in many of its architectural monuments. In his photography, he juxtaposes panoramic scenes of Savannah and its surrounding area in various stages in its development post 2000, with detailed elements rarely seen by the naked eye. WHILE attending a specialty-coursed dinner at Cotton and Rye a few short weeks ago, I found myself sitting at a table with several foodie strangers.

As the night progressed and the alcohol flowed, those strangers quickly turned into acquaintances through our shared love of food and baking. We bantered back and forth, over food and about food, and the conversation quickly changed to baking as I learned more about my neighbor, Calley Sholder, the owner and baker of The Topiary Cake Design.

It was brought to my attention that the seating arrangement was intentional. Cotton and Rye’s Chef Zach Shultz and his girlfriend Caroline Bradley think highly of Sholder’s baking skills and arranged the meeting.

As an at-home baker of many years, I was quick to take the opportunity to write about a fellow baker since I know just how difficult it is to be successful in the oven.

Although Sholder described the cake as rustic, while I was eating a slice, I have to disagree. The overall finish and flavor of the cake is a culinary dream, completely balanced without being oversweet. I would describe the cake as sophisticated yet southern.

Another fruity favorite is the Blackberry Chip, a super moist blackberry cake created with fresh seeded blackberries, vanilla, and chocolate chips. Each layer of vibrant violet cake is filled with silky smooth vanilla Italian buttercream.

Sholder explained the origin of her unique layered treat: “My blackberry chip is a play on Black Raspberry Chip from Graeter’s Ice Cream in Cincinnati, Ohio. As a kid, I would always get their ice cream and that flavor was by far my favorite. I decided to use blackberries instead of black raspberry to

put a slight twist on it.�

Adding a slight twist to things seems to be The Topiary’s calling card. All of the frosting slathered onto every cake is created using the same method.

Sholderd told me, “I make Italian style buttercream which means you cook sugar and water on the stove to make syrup, then whip it into egg whites. Once it is cooled you add your butter. Even though this technique takes the longest amount of time, it is better than any other frosting you will taste...It is not overly sweet but so silky smooth!�

The Cookie Dough Cake is one that I am certain will appeal to everyone alike.

Sholder browns butter before adding it to the cake batter, creating a brown butter cake. This takes a typical vanilla cake base to the next level by adding an extra note of taste, which is reminiscent of the deep butterscotch flavor found in the base of a chocolate chip cookie.

Sholder doesn’t stop there -- she adds even more cookie flavor with a hearty layer of eggless cookie dough jammed in between each cake round. The final addition is her classic vanilla Italian buttercream. The most modern flavor was The Creme BrÝlÊe Cake. Soft white cake is seasoned with a wisp of fresh vanilla bean. The use

of vanilla bean creates a more floral experience of vanilla flavor than just using extract alone.

Sticky homemade caramel is painted onto each cake before it is filled with airy vanilla bean buttercream. The moistness of this cake is created with the use of lots of sour cream and butter. Finally, the last cake slice I ate was The Chocolate Lover, my all time favorite traditional cake flavor. Like all of the cakes I tasted, this one was as moist as the last.

Light layers of deeply flavored chocolate cake are layered with rich chocolate buttercream.

Although this cake is a take on a classic flavor, the overall finish was far from a classic chocolate celebration cake; this was moist and had the correct balance of chocolate. The Topiary is not just limited to cakes, they also offer cake pops and plan on expanding to more desserts in the future.

For the last 7 or 8 years, we’ve been lucky enough to have a front row seat to what has become Savannah’s vibrant restaurant scene.

I won’t waste your time with too many tales from memory lane. But forgive me for having a chuckle when I think back to the rumors of a celebrity chef looking to open a restaurant in an old warehouse on Victory Drive that was otherwise used to park campaign signs during election season.

Yes, much has changed in the last 4 or 5 years around here. If I put my mind to it, I could likely count close to two dozen bars and restaurants that have opened since Summer 2014 — the season I usually refer to when discussing when everything began to change food-wise in Savannah.

I am regularly asked how I am able to keep track of it all. Yes, it is more than a full time job. I consider myself lucky to have it.

But for the average couple that doesn’t live downtown, it’s tough to get to many of these restaurants in a six-month span. For all your good intentions, the next thing you know months have gone by and you still haven’t made it to Restaurant X. The times of the year when people make exceptions to those rules are during the very popular Restaurant Weeks. Restaurant Week isn’t just popular here in Savannah. They exist all over America, including New York, DC, and Miami (who call theirs Miami Spice...I find that amusing).

The one thing all of those cities have in common is their “Restaurant Week” promotions all last a month. Yes, they call it Restaurant Week, but they last a month.

Go figure. Something about branding and recognition and lots of smart people stuff that is way above my pay grade.

What I do know is that for the better part of the last decade, the existing Savannah restaurant week has been welcomed with open arms by diners looking for a deal: Three courses for $30 at any participating restaurant.

I also know restaurants have been reluctant to participate the last couple of years due to increased costs on their end. They have anyway because they had no other option when it came to Restaurant Week.

Well, now they do.

We decided some months ago to move forward with our Eat It and Like It Restaurant Weeks as part of moving our show to

WTOC-TV. We’ve enjoyed a larger audience in our new home and figured it would be a perfect platform from which to promote such a large culinary “event.”

Eat It and Like It’s Restaurant Weeks begins Thursday, Jan. 10 and is 24 days long, through Feb. 2: Double the existing Restaurant Week’s length.

The reason for that is simple. Once upon a time, 12 days was enough time to visit a couple of restaurants when there were only a handful on the scene. Now, with 30-50 legitimate dining options? How on earth can you even process that in 12 days?

You can’t. Now you have the time to plan it and, equally as important, budget for it.

It should be mentioned that the price point for our Restaurant Weeks are Dinner: three courses for $40. Lunch will be offered for two courses for $20 and Brunch will be two courses for $23. For the very simple reason that the price of food has not gone down in the last ten years.

You should also know that the motivation for this project is two-fold. With so many restaurants on the scene and so many more to come, we want the opportunity to welcome travelers in drive markets to come and get a taste of our city.

It doesn’t have to be Atlanta or Charlotte or Jacksonville either. Twenty four days gives our friends in Beaufort or Hilton Head Island an opportunity to make plans to come to Savannah and Eat It and Like It. We are also thrilled to have put together such a rich group of media partners to promote this event. Yes, you are currently reading Connect Savannah, a place our work has never appeared before. We are excited to not only team up with them, but also Dick Broadcasting Group in Savannah for access to radio airwaves as well.

The reason everyone is on board is simple: to support local restaurants during an otherwise very slow time of the year. Competition is tougher than it has ever been in Savannah. This gives everyone a shot and our media partners recognize that.

1. THE FAVOURITE The best film of 2018. The climactic comeuppance and abrupt ending could both be stronger, but otherwise, this outrageous period piece — basically All About Eve with corsets — is a smashing success. Yorgos Lanthimos directs with flair, the exceptional screenplay by Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara cuts like a dagger, and a perfect cast is anchored by Olivia Colman as the sickly Queen Anne and Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone as the two women who compete for her attention and affection. It’s a historical drama, an acerbic comedy, and a poignant love story all rolled into one rollicking package.

2. EIGHTH GRADE Written and directed by television and YouTube star Bo Burnham, Eighth Grade offers a knockout performance by 15-year-old Elsie Fisher as Kayla Day, an introverted student struggling to survive her last week of eighth grade before preparing for high school. Stripped of practically all artifice, this stinging saga is more unsettling than Hereditary, more unnerving than A Quiet Place, and it bested Avengers: Infinity War as last summer’s ultimate word on edge-of-your-seat entertainment.

3. ROMA Alfonso Cuaron is known for directing such cinematic gems as Children of Men and Y Tu Mama Tambien, but this time, it’s personal. The helmer here loosely draws from his own childhood experiences to fashion a leisurely and loving look at a family living in Mexico City in the early 1970s. The focus is primarily on the family’s live-in maid Cleo (a wonderful turn by non-professional Yalitza Aparicio), and her triumphs and travails form the backbone of a richly textured and humanistic story.

2. RED SPARROW A former Russian ballerina (Jennifer Lawrence) reluctantly attends a so-called “whore school” where she learns how to mix sex with espionage. As a thriller, Red Sparrow is awfully turgid and utterly unbelievable, and whereas a superior spy caper chooses to wear its danger on its sleeve, this one is content to merely shove it into its jockstrap. After all, it’s hard to feel like a movie is striking a blow against misogyny when its camera leers as obsessively as a virginal frat boy at a strip club.

3. MILE 22 Director Peter Berg and actor Mark Wahlberg have made four movies together, but nobody will be equating them with Ford-Wayne, Kurosawa-Mifune or Scorsese-De Niro at any point. Easily the lamest of their collaborations, this badly edited action flick finds Wahlberg delivering a career-worst performance as a cranky, wise-cracking CIA operative whose groan-worthy quips and tough-guy posturing prove to be even more deadly than the copious bullets he fires at anything that moves.

THE GRINCH Illumination Entertainment, which previously performed a hate crime on the Dr. Seuss canon with the odious 2012 adaptation of The Lorax, returns with another cacophonous rendition that completely misses the irresistible charm and sly simplicity of the source material. The basic story remains the same, only we now find ourselves siding with the Grinch more than with the insufferable joy germs populating Whoville — surely not the angle anyone sought when making this garish cartoon.

5. ROBIN HOOD Fifty Shades Freed could have conceivably nabbed this slot — after all, its predecessors landed in the #1 and #3 spots on this list in their respective years — but since it’s a shade or two (though not 50) better than those previous efforts, I’ll give it a break and instead use this final space for this buffoonish boondoggle. A medieval makeover meant for millennials, Robin Hood suggests that Nottingham came equipped with its own Urban Outfitters and everyone spoke like bratty, entitled teenagers. CS 33

Italian/Canadian pianist Mauro Bertoli will perform works of Paradisi, Clementi, Mendelssohn, Debussy, and Gershwin.

Bertolli performs regularly for important festivals and in major concert halls throughout Europe, North America, South Korea, Israel, Brazil, and China. Bertoli studied piano at the Conservatory of Milan. He has lived in Ottawa since 2009, where today he is Piano Accompanist Professor at the Conservatoire de Musique de Gatineau.
