WHILE MANY FOLKS focused on the non-news coming out of City Council last week that the Savannah Cultural Arts Center will be officially named… wait for it… the Savannah Cultural Arts Center, there was another tidbit that deserved much more attention.

The City of Savannah says the local poverty rate is now at a citywide 21 percent, down from 26.4 percent when the current Mayor and Council were elected and sub-

Indeed, the word “celebration” or “celebratory” came up almost ten times.

“At that celebratory event we want to do a roll call” of everyone deserving credit for the reduction in poverty, said Bell.

However, Mayor Eddie DeLoach wisely counseled caution about getting that party too lit.

“As we celebrate that, let’s always remember that number is based on the fact that one in five are still in poverty. And that’s a job we need to continue to work on,” he said.

But what do the jobs here pay?

The upward track in local median household income is certainly significant, and certainly welcome.

But the national median household income is over $60,000 a year, with a national poverty rate of 12.3 percent – nearly half Savannah’s rate.

The median household income in Georgia is over $56,000, and the state poverty rate is 14.9 percent.

Savannah, while undeniably trending better, is still hurting by comparison not only with the rest of the country, but with the rest of the state.

The recent improvements in the local poverty rate and local median household income almost directly track the robust national improvement in the jobs market. But the devil is in the details, as always. sequently made reducing the poverty rate a key point of their strategic plan.

In the words of Alderwoman Carol Bell, the improving numbers are the product of “a real village approach,” involving the participation of not only City officials but of a wide range of “organizations and clubs, anybody in this community who’s had anything to do with focusing on poverty reduction... churches, the universities, individuals.”

The figures are based directly on U.S. Census estimates for 2017 — the most recent data available — and as estimates they do involve a small margin of error.

There has been some complaining about the source of the figures, but I’m not sure there is a better arbiter available with as big a database as the U.S. Census; if there is, I’d be eager to know about it.

The news initially was revealed at the recent City budget retreat, but didn’t get much attention at the time.

But at last week’s meeting a few City Council members practically broke their own arms patting themselves on the back.

“It’s an amazing success story for this community,” said Alderwoman Estella Shabazz.

Alderman Julian Miller announced a “celebration and rejuvenation” event to be held Dec. 19 at the Civic Center.

“We’re inviting every organization, every agency… that participated in this, to not only celebrate this but rejuvenate our efforts now that we know we can move that needle.”

I’m no sociologist, but I did a bit of digging into the U.S. Census figures used in this reckoning, specifically their American Community Survey.

Among other things, the poverty numbers show that — surprise, surprise — the rise and fall of the local numbers mirrors the national economy at large.

For example, during the depths of the great recession, Savannah’s poverty rate skyrocketed from 21.9 percent in 2009 — roughly what it is today — up to a staggering 28.9 percent poverty rate by 2011, just two years later.

The recent improvements in the local poverty rate and local median household income almost directly track the robust national improvement in the jobs market.

Median household income in Savannah for 2017 stands at $42,869, up from $38,879 in 2016, and up from $35,827 in 2015, when this Mayor and Council was elected. That’s a solid swing.

Given the upward trend in the national economy, it follows that the median income would rise in Savannah as well.

Of course, the devil, as always, is in the details.

While Savannah by some estimates has the second-lowest unemployment rate in Georgia, the sticking point has less to do with employment than with wages.

As with the country at large now, almost everyone who wants a job in Savannah can find a job.

A deeper dive into the numbers shows more revealing nuggets of information: • The poverty rate for children in the City of Savannah is about 35 percent.

• Almost 20 percent of Savannah households receive Food Stamps/SNAP assistance.

• Nearly one out of five adults in the City of Savannah has no health insurance at all.

• Of 57 Savannah-Chatham public schools, 38 have a majority of students on Free or Reduced Lunch. At Gadsden Elementary, every single student qualifies.

And not that there’s anything wrong with renting, but nearly six out of ten households in Savannah are rented rather than owned — compared to a national rental rate well below 40 percent.

So there is reason to applaud the recent, and likely undeniable, improvement in the citywide poverty rate. Credit should certainly be given where it’s due.

But Mayor DeLoach was correct in tamping down too much talk of a big party to congratulate ourselves. Some of the improvement can be chalked up to matters far outside the hands of any local leaders.

City officials would be wise to frame the new numbers as less of a cause for celebration, and more of a rough, but promising, beginning in addressing the particular local issues holding Savannah back.

The joy of discovery at the UGA Aquarium

DO YOU remember the first time you went to an aquarium? Devin Dumont does.

As a kid, Dumont visited Sea World and was transfixed by the animals he saw. Now, he’s the aquarium curator at the University of Georgia Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant Aquarium over on Skidaway Island, and he gets to recreate that sense of wonder with behind-the-scenes tours, like the one being held this Saturday.

“These events are a lot of fun for me because I really subscribe to the philosophy that we want to spark an interest in people, and sometimes it happens just by them being here,” shares Dumont. “Hopefully they become more interested in studying, learning, and protecting Georgia’s coastal resources.”

Of course, the juicy part of the tour takes behind the scenes.

“I think people really start to put it all together when they’re back here,” says

Dumont. “There’s a lot more involved than fish in a tank.”

Dumont and Lisa Olenderski are the only two full-time staff to run the aquarium, relying on help from student interns and volunteers.

“Larger aquariums have specialized teams to do very specific tasks,” Dumont explains. “I actually like being in this situation because we get to do a little bit of everything. I had to learn how to do all that stuff when I first started. My background was marine biology, but I had to become the plumber.”

One of the more fun parts of Dumont and Olenderski’s job is pairing the animals together.

“Lisa and I have to play fish Tetris sometimes,” Dumont laughs. “We have to factor in their behaviors and habitat needs.

behaviors. Fish can die from stress.”

Dumont points out the quarantine tanks on the wall opposite the display tanks.

“When we get new animals, we want to make sure they’re healthy and eating well before we place them in a display tank,” Dumont says. “Similarly, if there’s a little scuffle or incident and we need to use one of these as a hospital tank, or a time-out tank, we can. One of the benefits of coming behind the scenes is seeing the animals that aren’t on display yet.”

Since Dumont and Olenderski spend so much time with the animals, their interactions with the animals become more personal.

“The lobster was given to us by the Tennessee Aquarium a while ago, maybe around 2010,” says Dumont. “If groups are back here talking about things, they start to realize that each individual animal has a story—at least they do to me. I had to drive to Tennessee to pick up the lobster and drive eight hours back. Some kind of connection might happen there. It’s easily over 10 years old, and sometimes when children hear that, they’re like, ‘Really? It’s older than me?”

Another exceptional animal in the aquarium’s care is the octopus. The tank is remarkable because it has green AstroTurf around the sides, which Dumont explains is an octopus escape prevention method.

“They can’t get suction on the AstroTurf, and it irritates their suckers so they freak out when they touch it,” he says.

“Octopi are really smart animals and they have the most developed brain of any invertebrate. They can problem-solve.

One of the fun things we get to do is give them enrichment devices—toys. If we drop something in there, Octavius would just grab it and immediately investigate the shape and texture. We started to put live crabs in containers and he’d try to figure out how to get in there. You have to do that or else they start thinking about how to get out.”

Fortunately, the tour isn’t the only event

coming up this winter, with everything from a youth conservation summit to a class on microplastics in fish. The tour is just a jumping-off point to discover the cool things happening at the aquarium.

Behind the aquarium is Georgia’s first oyster hatchery, housed inside the Shellfish Research Lab. The hatchery, open for just over four years, is allowing harvesters to farm single oysters instead of the typical cluster formation.

“The main reason for starting this hatchery was the push and interest from the industry,” explains the Shellfish Research Lab’s director Tom Bliss.

“We do have leases in the water, and we have guys growing clams and wild harvests. There were quite a few interested in wanting to potentially get into oyster aquaculture.”

Since the state of Georgia doesn’t allow the importation of oyster seeds, it made sense for the UGA Marine Science Extension and Georgia Sea Grant to launch the hatchery.

The hatchery got a little extra publicity last month at Husk, where four varieties of oysters were served.

“Husk donated those proceeds, and that was their way of raising awareness,” Bliss says. “They did it the way of, ‘Let’s do something that brings people in so it reaches a different crowd.’”

One of the available varieties of oyster was MacIntosh, which are from Georgia.

“We didn’t provide the oysters—we’re just a hatchery—but there’s a good chance the MacIntosh oysters came from the seeds we grew,” explains Bliss.

The health benefits of safer streets

WHAT DO you know about U.S. Census tract 13051003301? By looking at its boundaries I learned its home to a portion of the historic Carver Village neighborhood.

Thanks to Georgia Healthy Cities (georgiahealthycities.org/), I discovered 13051003301 is also home to the highest prevalence of diabetes in Savannah. An estimated 23.7 percent of residents are diagnosed with diabetes, boosting it into the top 1 percent of Census tracts for diabetes among the 500 largest U.S. cities.

Tract 13051003301’s dubious diabetes distinction was easy to ascertain using the “Savannah Story Map and 5 High Health Risks” feature on the GHC website, which is part of a new project that, “exists to help communities better understand how their neighborhoods impact their health—and what local-level changes can help improve their health outcomes.”

Along with diabetes and complications, the website allows visitors to peer into Savannah neighborhoods and see rates for stroke, respiratory disease, and poor and low sleep. The differences between neighborhoods — even some that are adjacent to each other — can be jarring.

In describing 13051003301’s diabetes rate, the Georgia Healthy Cities website explains, “Nearby, two census tracts are estimated to have fewer than 6 percent of residents with the disease. The great disparity for residents just a few miles away from each other is an illustration of health inequity. It may be that seemingly small differences between these neighborhoods, such as the presence or absence of safe

It may also be that the city’s past has shaped where different people live, thereby creating clusters of residents who are at higher risk for developing the disease.”

Lizann Roberts, executive director of the Coastal Georgia Indicators Coalition, sees significant potential in the tools provided by the project, which is also focusing on Albany, Atlanta, and Columbus.

“This data will help coalition partners and the community to investigate the underlying causes of disparities in the data and collectively create a strategy to address them,” she said.

“For instance, the GHC data shows that Savannah is No. 433 out of 500 cities in the data set for overall health. We will examine the factors and through cross-collaboration among partners, create viable, sustainable solutions. Even on an individual level, organizations can see where they can focus their attention to the areas of highest need.”

The project is supported by the Urban Institute through funds provided by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and focuses on social determinates of health, five factors that influence health and well-being: economic stability, education, social and community, health and healthcare, and neighborhood and the built environment.

The last of these has been the topic of increasingly intensive research. The headline of a New York Times story from earlier this year, “Writing Prescriptions to Play Outdoors,” encapsulates the connection between where we live and how it affects our health.

But simply going outside for a walk may not be a viable proposition for those who live on one of the more than 70 percent of Savannah streets that do not have sidewalks. Or for those who live in an area where speeding and traffic crashes are

common.

The GHC project should help clarify the relationship between neighborhoods, in which residents would be unable to safely comply with a doctor’s prescription for exercise because of problems with the built environment, and higher rates of chronic diseases.

“We can feature communities with the highest rates of diabetes, or zip codes with the greatest concentration of hypertension and stroke,” Roberts said.

“The public can also see where various amenities in Savannah are located, such as green space and fitness facilities.

Our hope is that skillful use of the data will draw the public to ask the question, why and what does the data indicate? Policymakers can then work with the community to address those questions to provide insight into underlying causes and create a culture of health for all.”

In my work I hear from people who live in Census tracts all over town including 13051004211 (Windsor Forest), 13051001500 (East Victorian District), and 13051011600 (Hudson Hill) who want to reclaim neighborhood streets from speeding and aggressive driving, and make them safe places for people.

The primary goal of these efforts is reducing traffic crashes, especially those that involve people who walk, use wheelchairs and other assistive devices, or ride bikes. Now, however, residents can identify additional benefits that could be derived from neighborhood safety projects.

In addition to decreasing traffic-related injuries and deaths, better health outcomes provide more justification for implementation.

In that way, safer streets are wonder drugs. They reduce the traumatic injuries that are caused by traffic crashes and at the same time attack chronic conditions. It’s hard to imagine a wiser investment. CS

Santa’s Pantry: Helping Savannah children who need food

BY KRISTY EDENFIELD WITH THE school calendar being 180 days, do you ever wonder what happens the other 185 days a year when it comes to proper nutrition?

Lack of food at home and food insecurities are significant barriers for children to overcome to be able to learn at school.

Santa’s Pantry strives to alleviate that burden for SCCPSS students over the two week winter break.

Gabrielle Brundidge, from Hubert Middle School concurs, “when my students do not have enough to eat at home or food insecurities, it manifests in them either over eating at school, asking for food from peers and staff, or even hiding and storing food in their bags for later. Sometimes students in this situation will hoard food, and it will become a problem, because teachers will find stale, old food in their desk, or in the backpacks.”

Brundidge notes, “what I usually see as counselor is students asking for food before the break, so that they have enough food over the long holidays. Sometimes families will reach out to the school and see if we have a connection on resources, and if we do we direct families that way.”

That is where programs like Santa’s

This year, the 10 SCCPSS schools with the highest percentage of free/reduced lunch as reported by the Georgia Department Of Education were selected for the program: Brock Elementary, Williams Elementary, E Broad Street School, Windsor Forest Elementary, Shuman Elementary, Haven Elementary, Hodge Elementary, DeRenne Middle, Hubert Middle, and Butler Elementary.

With a 2019 School Food Service budget of over $24 million, 7th District Board Member and Budget Committee Chairman Michael Johnson says, “any organization that is willing to step up when school is not in session, winter or summer break,

we have this policy at Hubert. It also lets us connect with the students and families who receive the bags, because we are able to identify the students who need this service.”

At Haven Elementary School, Lila Black, School Counselor, notes, “in my school it is considered a special treat and all of the students wish to be included. Years ago I started the idea that these were “treat bags” and subsequently the students in my school consider it a novelty and special privilege. I do not discuss what is in them (the bags) and I tell students that anyone’s mother can contact me.”

school, and nearly 70% of SCCPSS students meet the poverty line for free and reduced lunch.

Almost 25,000 Chatham County public school children receive a healthy free or reduced cost lunch at school, and thousands more pay regular price.

If a child eats both breakfast and lunch at school, they can come close to achieving their USDA nutritional dietary guideline requirements for the entire day.

Onetha Bonaparte, SCCPSS School Nutrition Director, says, “the School Nutrition Program develops menus based on the meal patterns that are required by the USDA. We also integrate items collected from surveys of students in the district and incorporate them into the menus. We must offer ½ cup fruit or vegetables, and at least two other food groups at breakfast. For lunch we are required to offer five meal components that include grains, meat or meat alternate, milk, fruits and vegetables.

Lisa Lockhard, a counselor at East Board K8 School, says, “students who are not getting enough to eat at home will often take food from other students, hoard food in the cafeteria and will ask for seconds. Some may even have trouble focusing on their work.”

THE PERENNIAL Christmas favorite “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” isn’t a favorite to all.

For some kids, it hits a little closer to home.

The Rape Crisis Center of the Coastal Empire’s ninth annual Reindeer Run seeks to raise awareness of bullying through Rudolph’s example.

“Rudolph was bullied, and I think that back then a lot of people didn’t consider that to be bullying,” says Doris Williams, executive director of the Rape Crisis Center. “The more we learn, the more we understand there are so many different ways of bullying. I always say, everyone on the playground grows up.”

Take a stand with Rudolph and reclaim the reindeer games with the Reindeer Run. The favorite holiday event kicks off with the kiddie run at 8:45 a.m., followed by the 8k at 9 a.m.

Runners can participate in a costume contest as their favorite holiday characters to win gift cards. There’s a cookie contest, a kid zone, great food, and a visit from Santa.

This year’s celebrity runners are Jodie Luther, Ashley Borders, Stacey Young, Ciara Lucas, Det. Sean Organ, Linda Wilder-Bryan, Tawana Garrett, and Sgt. Tiffany Manuel. Three junior celebrity runners—Dekevian George and Milan and Maxum Iezzi—join in the fun.

Proceeds from the run go towards the Prevention Education programs at the Rape Crisis Center.

“Our kids are very important. They mean a lot to this agency,” says Williams.

“Sometimes people don’t put the two together, the advocacy piece and the prevention piece. For our run, that’s what our main focus is. That is to raise funds so when we do get cuts, we’re able to supplement that and still be able to provide all our services for free.”

Williams stresses that she wants parents to know the Rape Crisis Center’s services are available.

“One of the big things we want everyone to be aware of is that we’re here,” she says.

“We are willing to offer classes free of charge. We will come to your school if you invite us. If parents aren’t aware of our services being offered at their school, they can call the counselor and request that we come, and we’ll come. All we need is the invitation. Not only do we want to make

sure that the children being bullied are properly heard and taken care of, but the ones who are bullying need to be taken care of as well.”

The Rape Crisis Center is always trying to enhance their programming.

“The classes deal with different age groups, so our curriculum is geared towards that age group,” says Williams.

“They usually do a pretest and a posttest so we can tweak our presentation so the kids get something out of it. We’re always looking at ourselves to make sure the class fits the age group.”

This year, the Rape Crisis Center has partnered with the Humane Society of Greater Savannah to offer onsite pet adoptions.

“It’s one of our fun, family-friendly, petfriendly, community awareness pieces wrapped into a fundraiser,” Williams says.

Homicide on Ogeechee Road; suspect shot by police

Savannah Police detectives are investigating the fatal shooting of a 28-year-old woman the evening of December 8.

“At around 11:35 p.m., officers responded to the America’s Best Value Inn on the 4000 block of Ogeechee Road on report of a shooting. Once on scene, officers located Sandee Warren, 28, suffering from a gunshot wound. She succumbed to her injuries at the scene,” police report.

Through the course of the incident, officers located the suspect.

“The encounter resulted in an officerinvolved shooting. As standard protocol, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called to handle the officer-involved shooting investigation,” police say.

The suspect is deceased. Savannah Police Violent Crimes detectives continue to investigate the homicide of Warren to determine the circumstances that led up to the incident.

CNT arrests nurse for theft of controlled substances

A registered nurse is in custody after it was determined she was stealing controlled substances from a local hospital.

Early Dec. 4, “the Chatham-Savannah Counter Narcotics Team (CNT) arrested 33-year-old Lindsey Burke of Pooler.

Burke was a registered nurse for Memorial Medical Center at the time of her arrest.

Burke was charged with multiple felony drug charges and also charged with Theft

by Taking. Burke remains in the Chatham County Detention Center,” CNT report.

CNT was contacted by Memorial Medical Center Security regarding a narcotics shortage and missing medical-related items.

“Through CNT’s investigation and with assistance from Memorial Medical Center, it was determined Burke was unlawfully removing various forms of controlled substances with no legitimate medical purposes and outside the scope of her normal

duties. All missing narcotics and medicalrelated items were later recovered from Burke’s possession,” CNT reports.

CNT’s investigation determined Burke appeared to have been acting alone.

They have a security plan in place that alerted them to the discrepancies and immediately contacted us. Their quick response and partnership greatly aided in recovering all items before they left the hospital.”

Fatal pedestrian-involved crash on Southside

Savannah Police’s Traffic Investigation Unit is investigating a pedestrian-involved crash that resulted in the fatality of a 32-year-old woman yesterday evening.

“At around 6:15 p.m., Cynthia Garnto, 59, driving a Toyota Sienna, was traveling south on Middleground Road near the intersection of Mohawk Street. At the same time, Ryan Dennis, 32, walking west across Middleground Road, stepped into Garnto’s path and was struck. Dennis sustained life threatening injuries, and she succumbed to those injuries,” police report.

The Traffic Investigation Unit continues to investigate this crash.

John Stevenson of Inverclyde, Scotland, hit a bump in his plans to vacation in the United States on Dec. 3 when his visa was denied after he declared himself a terrorist while filling out a Department of Homeland Security online form commonly known as ESTA. One of the questions on the form asks, “Are you a terrorist?” Stevenson, 70, told The Independent that the website “must have jumped from No to Yes without me knowing,” adding that the site kept timing out and crashing as he and his wife, Marion, tried to answer the questions. “I even called the border control in the U.S. and gave them my passport details,” he said. “They looked up my ESTA number and said, ‘You’re a terrorist.’ The only time I’ve been in court was for jury service. Marion is sick about it. ... I don’t know why that question is on the form in the first place.” (UPDATE: United Airlines refunded the Stevensons’ airline tickets and gifted them two free flights to New York once their visa troubles are all worked out.)

Armed and Clumsy

A shopper at a Buckeye, Arizona, Walmart was in the meat department on Nov. 27 when his semiautomatic handgun, which he had positioned for a quick draw in the waistband of his sweatpants, began to slip. As he tried to reposition it, he told Buckeye police, it discharged, striking the gunslinger in his privacies. AZCentral reported the unnamed shopper was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, and no one else was hurt. However, police did file a charge of unlawful discharge of a firearm.

Least Competent Criminals

• A successful heist at an electronics retail store requires careful planning and

attention to detail -- a fact that appears to have escaped three men in North Raleigh, North Carolina, on Nov. 12. That night, the News and Observer reported, an employee of the store called 911 to report that three men had entered the store with semiautomatic weapons and ordered workers into the stockroom. One of them was carrying a cardboard box, officers learned, which he used to load up mobile phones and smart watches. The men also filled two crates with merchandise, which totaled more than $26,000. When the robbers left through the back door, they took the crates with them, but forgot the cardboard box which, serendipitously, sported a shipping label with an address on it. Police used the address, along with a mug shot from a previous crime that matched an image in the store’s surveillance video, to track down Brian Lamonte Clark, 22, and arrest him for robbery with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to commit robbery.

• The Lucardo Escape Rooms in Manchester, England, were the site of a misguided break-in on Nov. 29 when two thieves ransacked a fake bank vault as if it were the real thing. The Manchester Evening News reported that more than 50 surveillance cameras captured the duo’s antics as they broke into fake safes and opened drawers that held only puzzles.

“They must be Manchester’s stupidest burglars,” said Lucardo director Ian Pownall, 26. The business lost about 100 pounds in cash, but damage amounted to about 1,000 pounds -- not to mention lost revenue while the business cleans up.

“We’re a small, family-owned business, so even a couple of thousand pounds will have an effect on us, particularly before Christmas,” Pownall said.

‘Scuuuuse Me!

• At the Grand Slam of Darts in Wolverhampton, England, there was more in the air than just the sharp projectiles tossed by competitors on Nov. 16. According to Reuters, former two-time champion Gary Anderson, 47, from Scotland, prevailed over Wesley Harms, 34, from the Netherlands to reach the quarter finals, but Harms had a gripe: He said he was affected by the “fragrant smell” Anderson had emitted as they played. “It’ll take me two nights to lose this smell from my nose,” Harms told a Dutch television station.

Anderson objected, saying the smell came “from the table side,” laying the blame on spectators. “If the boy thinks I’ve farted he’s 1,010 percent wrong,” Anderson declared. “If somebody has done that they need to see a doctor. ... He says it was me, but I would admit it.”

• Shanetta Yvette Wilson, 37, was standing in line at a Dollar General store in Dania Beach, Florida, on Nov. 25 when the urge struck and she let one rip. John Walker, who was standing nearby, was offended and complained about “the defendant farting loudly,” according to the resulting Broward Sheriff’s office complaint, so Wilson pulled out a small folding knife, opened it and threatened to “gut” Walker as she moved toward him. The Miami Herald reported that police called to the scene tracked down Wilson and charged her with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill.

Yoshitaka Sakurada, 68, a 22-year member of Japan’s parliament, was named by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in October to two new posts: cybersecurity and Olympics minister for the country. But according to Reuters, at a committee meeting

on Nov. 14, when a member of the opposition asked Sakurada a “gotcha” question about his computer literacy, he admitted: “I’ve never used a computer! ... I’ve always directed my staff and secretaries to do that kind of thing.” He assured the lawmaker there would be no problems. Mmm-hmm.

An unnamed substitute teacher in Montville, N.J. won’t be returning to Cedar Hill School after revealing a sacred secret to first-grade students there on Nov. 29. Superintendent Rene Rovtar told NJ.com the sub got into a debate with a student about whether Santa is real. That’s when the 6-year-olds started quizzing her about the Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy and Elf on a Shelf, and the teacher “proceeded to debunk all of it,” Rovtar said. Parents reported doing “damage control” and the sub is no longer welcome in the district.

The animal rights group PETA launched a campaign Dec. 4 designed to remove some animal-related idioms from the English language. CBS News reports the group tweeted suggested alterations to phrases it says are verbal vestiges of “speciesism” and perpetuate harmful messages. PETA offers these alternatives: For “bring home the bacon,” try “bring home the bagels.”

“Take the bull by the horns” should be “take the flower by the thorns.” And “kill two birds with one stone” morphs into “feed two birds with one scone.” PETA likened the use of the original phrases to racist and homophobic language. JEFF TWO-NAMES and the Born Agains have made quite a name for themselves in the Savannah music scene for a number of years, playing a clever and catchy brand of punk rock that draws from several facets of the genre. Though the lineup has changed over the years, Jeff Two-Names and Rev. Kev have both been consistently involved and continue to fly the punk flag in Savannah and beyond.

We spoke to the pair ahead of their Jinx show on Dec. 13 to talk beginnings, influences, and the staying power of punk.

For people who might not be familiar with you guys, how did this band get started?

Jeff: Actually, it’s pretty funny. I coach youth soccer for a living, and I originally met Rev. Kev because I was coaching his daughter. And then I did his wedding! We talked about for over a year that we needed

to play music together - we wanted to find somebody else [to fill out the lineup] that we liked. We just wanted to have fun, and we finally found someone who we thought we could hang out and play music with.

We thought we’d play a few shows, and that was five years ago.

Rev Kev: We thought this would be really short-lived, to be honest [laughs].

Jeff: We’re on bass player number four - we’re the Spinal Tap of bass players. And we’re on extra guitar player number two.

Rev Kev: Now it’s a pretty steady lineup, and it’s been the same lineup for a while.

We have really good chemistry and get along really well, so it’s going really good.

Did you guys listen to the same stuff?

Is that what made you realize you wanted to play music together?

Jeff: Yeah. Kev and I had the same background growing up with punk rock. He was more broad spectrum than me with music

It’s cool because you can hear a range of styles - there’s the whole Lookout!

Records style of punk happening, but I can also hear some influence from the 80s D.C. hardcore stuff. Was that some of what you were listening to?

Jeff: Yeah. Our other guitarist, Michael, was really into that. That was his vein of punk rock. Mine was a lot more of the pop punk thing, and Kev was similar to me.

Dan, the bassist, is very similar to Michael in terms of punk rock but overall his influences are very broad.

Rev Kev: He’s classically trained - he has a Masters degree or something from Princeton in music composition.

Jeff: We don’t let him write any of these songs [laughs].

Are you tackling current events and using punk as a platform at all like a lot of punk bands do? Or are you looking for levity a little more in your lyrics?

Jeff: We joke that we’re fact-punk [laughs].

You nailed it, though - a lot of bands are driven by the politics of the times or things that people don’t like in the world. But we try to kind of balance the force, if you will, and bring the fun side out. We still think about that stuff, but the way I try to cope is trying to write silly punk songs.

Rev Kev: But they’re all about our lives.

Jeff: Literally, something will happen and I just exaggerate it a lot to make it a song.

Rev Kev: We have a song about my daughter getting a tonsillectomy [laughs].

But like Jeff said - I’m a pastor and I run a ministry for the homeless. I see the darkest of humanity and brokenness on a daily basis, and sometimes you just need a little levity.

Sometimes girls just want to have fun [laughs].

There’s a tradition of that sort of thing in more of the pop-punk vein - not taking yourself too seriously.

Jeff: It’s a statement within itself, really.

Not that we’re trying to make any statements, but you can say a lot of things through levity and not taking yourself too seriously.

On a broader scale, why do you think people are so fiercely committed to and passionate about punk rock?

Jeff: I think there’s a beauty and simplicity. I studied music in college, and there’s always kind of an ebb and flow of simplicity versus grandiose composition. There’s always a place for very simple rock and roll, and that’s what punk is. Punk is influenced by early 50s and 60s rock and roll.

We just did a tribute night at The Jinx to The Beatles, and we really didn’t do anything differently to the songs. We just played them a little faster with distortion.

The first four Beatles albums are punk albums, as far as I’m concerned. Like I said, there’s beauty in simplicity, and I think that creates a timelessness. And that whole definition that I just gave is so not punk [laughs]. CS

Rev Kev: I liked grunge bands and stuff in the 90s, but I had friends who were in punk bands so I always wanted to play in one.

NASHVILLE-BASED group God Bless Relative is off to a great start in the last few years since they formed. Their most recent LP, You Will Receive Favor | I Will Return, has garnered acclaim for its roomy, organic production and gorgeous melodies.

The band effortlessly rides the line between the adventurousness of Wilco and the rich emotional depth of Sun Kil Moon, and it’s thanks in large part to leader and songwriter Blake Tallent.

Ahead of the band’s show at El Rocko Lounge on Dec. 15, we spoke to Tallent

about how he got his start and what it’s like being an anxiety-ridden artist in today’s uncertain world.

How did this project take shape? I can hear the Wilco influence prominently, but there are also elements of bands like Pinegrove and Sun Kil Moon.

BT: You nailed a lot of that, man. We love all those bands. Primarily Wilco - what a gift Jeff Tweedy is. I think we draw so much influence from that that we have to be careful to not rip them off [laughs]. I think that when I was writing the record in particular, I was listening to a lot of this artist Carter Tanton. He’s a Boston guy,

and his record Freeclouds is so cool. He has this sense for using electronic music in an indie-folk way, which I always appreciate.

That record was a big game-changer. A lot of the latest stuff from John Moreland, too. These kinds of records really informed the way we made the record and the record we’re working on now.

You did the record in Chicago, right?

Tell me about that. How did that atmosphere influence the songs and the sonics of the record?

BT: We made the decision to go to Chicago because our buddy Kiko Negron, who produces a lot of our stuff, was living there at

So it’s all analog to tape?

BT: Yeah, man. As few overdubs as possible was the motto. We were really fortunate to get to do that. Not that it really makes a difference in what makes a record great, but it was something we always wanted to do.

I think that it does make a difference, just in the sense that you don’t really get a billion do-overs. There’s something to the energy of that urgency. I can hear that in the record, honestly.

BT: Thanks, man. That’s what we were hoping to achieve. The only other reason we decided to go up there was because of Wilco. I mean, Chicago is Wilco. It was like holy ground for us, so we said, “We have to do a record in Chicago and make it work.”

How much of the record was pre-production based?

BT: We didn’t really spend any time on

pre-pro. What’s interesting about our band is that none of us live in the same place. So we’re kind of file sharers, in that regard. I live in Nashville, Dustin lives in Savannah, and a few other guys that lay with us live in Pensacola. So I’ll make a demo and send it to the guys. That was how we did this last record, so it was very no pressure in the sense of approaching it from a relaxed place.

Do you think there’s an upside to being in a geographically scattered band?

Do you think it helps with focus and organizing things? Is it easier to just make everything you do a little more calculated?

BT: There’s definitely that whole thing, but there’s also the fact that you’re not living with the guys and pissed off when they don’t do the dishes. Over the years of being in and out of bands, I’ve found that operating a band in that way just works in the most healthy sense for me. It was just something we started trying and it worked super well.

I was reading an interview with you, and you were talking about how the songs came out of feelings of anxiety about the world around us. Tell me about that, because I feel like the idea of anxiety about the world we live in now is something not a lot of people are talking about.

BT: It’s hard to be an artistic person when you’re supposed to be at venues shaking hands and hanging out with people.

What makes it difficult is that we live in a country where I find it leave to my house without getting sick to the point of throwing up. I think it’s honestly weird that a lot more people aren’t like that.

I have a hard time identifying with people in the South and just how laid back they are about the state of things. It’s just one of those things where it’s like, “What the fuck is going on? How does nobody else care about this?” That just cuts you off. Or it makes you feel cut off.

There was just this whole time where if I’m going outside, I’m going to the Kroger that’s 0.2 miles away from me and going right back. I didn’t want to do things because of that fear, and because most people I encounter probably aren’t going to agree with me on anything either.

That was just where I was leading up to recording the record, and that was where the songs came from. Just a lot of anxiety.

For anyone who has issues with anxiety and things like that, definitely go get help because it’s really important. CS

the time. He had this in with a place called Orland Studios. It’s basically a privatelyowned studio that was this guy’s old pool house. He converted it into this live tracking room - it was pretty cool.

The control room is like SSL world with, like, a Studer. We figured that since the tape machine was there, we might as well do it to tape.

IT’S fair to say that Ben Tucker is one of the most important figures in modern Savannah history. A renowned jazz bassist who was an in-demand session player in the ‘60s, his legacy was further cemented when he formed an ad agency with bebop music composer Bob Dorough and created an arithmetic jingle at the request of an ad executive. That became the pilot episode for Schoolhouse Rock.

Tucker, who also found immense success with his beloved Savannah radio station WSOK, died tragically in 2013 when an auto driver collided with his golf cart.

Since his passing, the legend’s presence has been preserved by the Friends of Ben Tucker, who put on events to help the city remain aware of his immense contributions to American culture.

The upcoming Ben Tucker Fun-Raiser Dinner & Dance on Dec. 14 is no exception - in conjunction with Tucker’s birthday and featuring live music, dinner, dancing, and more. Ahead of the event, we spoke to

LB: First of all, it’s to maintain knowledge about Ben and what he did. There’s already generations going, “Who’s Ben Tucker?” and I’m always saying, “Remember Schoolhouse Rock? That’s Ben.” Ben epitomized the best values that transformed people’s lives. He did it in his music, he did it in his community service.

He developed bridges. Today, we don’t have many heroes. You’d catch this guy playing every other day at some venue, so if he was there you were getting some good music.

But he also loved working with the youth in the community. And they didn’t know him as a musician. They knew him as a golfer, or just a guy that smiled and his eyes squinted - kind of a Santa Claus-like figure.

He was a community leader with the radio station. President Jimmy Carter gave him an award in 1979. He made WSOK Radio a number one station for, like, 17 years. And by the time I was born he was one of the world’s top 10 bass players. Anybody who was anybody wanted to play with him. He was a magnet, you know?

Tell me a bit about your individual history with Ben.

Ben epitomized the best values that transformed people’s lives. He did it in his music, he did it in his community service. He developed bridges.

The Friends of Ben Tucker plan a joyous celebration in honor of the cherished bassist

LB: Most of the people in the Friends of Ben Tucker are music lovers. We like dinner, we like dancing - a lot of them are from up in New York. So they’re used to having a venue where you can go and ruin some good shoes. And like anything that had to do with Ben, this is going to be fun. That’s important, because that’s so part of what Ben was. Anything he was part of, you just wanted to be there.

So we’ve got great food, and that’s Nick and Tracy Mueller. Nick is probably one of the better chefs in Savannah, so that’s a draw in itself. This is the first time we’re doing something like this, with dinner and dance. If we’re going to celebrate Ben’s birthday, why not make a party out of it?

And anything we can do to help raise funds is good.

Why do you think it’s important to carry on Ben’s legacy? Of course, he’s such an important person in our city’s history beyond just being an incredible bass player.

LB: I grew up with a bunch of Cajun chefs and caterers, and I work at the different hotels carving beef or at a chef’s station.

And it was always fun when Ben was coming, because I’d have him play this song or play that. And he’d say, “Yeah, yeah, Larry.

You got it.”

The entire world knew Ben. I don’t think he necessarily remembered everybody’s names, but it was always, “Hey, partner.”

That’s what he called everybody.

You’d catch him at something you didn’t expect to catch him at. He was like glue in the community, and the thing is - he’s still doing it!

I love that they call it ‘Friends of Ben,’ because everybody’s a friend of Ben. He’s had such an impact on Savannah.

LB: Even just to say that this guy called Savannah home. He’s kind of a modern day hero, and we don’t have those. He’s the epitome of everything good. CS

LOUISA MAY ALCOTT’S 1869 novel Little Women is a staple in American literature - a piece of work that has been retold numerous times in numerous different formats.

Movies, TV, plays, musicals - the story has continued a prosperous life years and years since its publication.

This time, Savannah Repertory Theatre is doing its part to help carry on the legacy of Alcott’s celebrated work with their version of Little Women: The Musical.

The story’s iconic character, Jo March, will be portrayed by actress Kimberly Camacho.

Both Camacho and co-star Sam Beasley, who plays Laurie Laurence, say they’re looking forward to being part of the portrayal of such an important piece of American culture. The show opens on Dec. 13.

“The show really follows this family, the Marches, and specifically the four sisters.

You deal with the mom, who’s husband is at war. You get to see how they’re living in this situation. It follows their journey and friendships and romances. Jo wants to be a writer, and wants to choose a more independent life.,” Camacho explains.

“You see these journeys that they all go on and how they all learn these very different lessons, and yet in the end it’s this really close knit family. Though tragedy hits, and all these things feel like they’re tearing them apart, it really brings them together.”

Beasley says that Little Women is an important show because it “emcompases the many facets of being a woman, especially during the Civil War era.”

“It wasn’t common to be independent and self-sufficient,” he says.

“The complexities of wanting to raise a family and wanting to fall in love but find your own path was very new for the time period.”

The themes addressed in Little Women are both timely and timeless - something Camacho says is particularly important to her.

“One of my favorite things about the show is that it’s timeless,” she says.

“There’s so many things that we can still relate to about it. I love that it shows strength in so many different ways. It shows - specifically for women - strength in marriage, strength in love, strength in family, and strength in independence. It really represents every woman, in that time period but also today.”

Those themes addressed in the play can be almost eerily applied to the climate today in regard to gender equality, which Beasley says he was stunned by when researching his role.

“When I was doing my homework for this production, I was surprised at how many quotes could be directly lifted from text written so long ago - I’ve heard the same arguments in phrases said today,” he says. “[Alcott] has this really great passage about how the phrase ‘boys will be boys’ should never be used, and never be used as an excuse. It’s really powerful that what she says is still said today,” he says.

“There’s also so much sensitivity to words that are seen as polarizing, like the word ‘feminist.’ She does a really great job of making it not about gender, but just about humanity.”

Though some of what’s addressed in the show are things that are still a problem in modern society, Camacho stresses that there are also a lot of positive, beautiful themes in Alcott’s work that are still powerful today - things like “passion, bravery, and boldness.”

“I find specifically in my character of Jo that she wants to do these great things. She goes on this journey to realize that you can find extraordinary things in the ordinary,” she says.

“She’s kind of everything I wish I was.”

For both Camacho and Beasley, theater has always been an important part of their lives, and their participation in Little Women is an extension of that fact.

“I was not a very social child. I had a lot of social anxiety and I was bullied,” Beasley says.

“It took getting into theater to find my voice and find friendship. So in a lot of

ways, theater taught me to love myself which is a very bold statement. But it really did. It also taught me how to be an artist, how to have a voice, how to collaborate. You learn all these tools inherently through the process of theater.”

“On a personal level, theater has always been the way that I get to physically connect with my imagination,” Camacho adds.

“When I was a child, I liked to be alone in my own impressionary world. When I was a child it was encouraged, but as I got older - you don’t do that,” she says.

“When I did my first play, I got to be as big and passionate and expressive as I wanted to, and I realized how much I enjoyed storytelling. Theater was my way of getting to jump into the stories and into this world that I saw on the page.” CS

Langston Hughes’ Black Nativity lives on

Performing Arts Collective of Savannah brings the classic play to life

LANGSTON HUGHES’ classic Black Nativity has lived on in a number of formats since the legendary poet first put it on as an Off-Broadway performance in 1961.

It’s perhaps Hughes’ most acclaimed and timeless work - the celebrated artist’s own interpretation of the birth of Jesus Christ.

For nine years now, the Performing Arts Collective of Savannah has been doing the play and establishing it as a Christmas tradition.

Musical director Gary Swindell and his wife, Priscilla, are responsible for carrying on Hughes’ legacy through Black Nativity in Savannah, and this year’s production is no exception.

“I first did this show over 40 years ago,” Swindell says. “I toured the show - we went to San Antonio and a couple cities on the East Coast. And of course we did it here, and in Charleston. I fell in love with it at that time. I always thought, ‘When I get my own crew, I’m going to do it a little different.’”

Swindell’s version expands beyond just Gospel music, incorporating elements of reggae, African township music, and latin.

“What makes his thing special is that it’s him,” Swindell says of Hughes’ work.

“He was always very conscious of his cadence being musical. As you go through the script, without any music at all, you feel a pulse. That made putting the music together very simple.”

This year’s show is set to feature some new performers and instrumentation, and it’s something of a family affair for Priscilla and Gary - the former is directing this year’s production, and their children are even involved. Not only is their son, Gary Swindell, Jr., in the cast - their daughter will be featured in the show as well.

“I’m directing this year, and it’s our daughter’s first time singing in the show,” Priscilla says.

“One of the reasons is to empower the family. This is an awesome show for the family, and [the hope is] to maybe instill in the younger generation something that they want to continue on. Something that they want to pick up and say, ‘Mommy, do you remember when I saw that show? I

think I might want to do that!’ Gary and I have been doing theater for years, and one of the things we’ve tried to do is influence young people.”

Gary Swindell says that Black Nativity is just one example of Hughes’ lasting legacy.

As a pioneering figure in poetry and literary arts, Hughes was responsible for creating jazz poetry, a groundbreaking poetic art form that went on to become massively important to paving the way for things like hip hop music.

“Langston Hughes and those guys from the [Harlem] Renaissance, that’s the DNA of not just black theater but American theater,” he says. “Aspects of those things pop up - in everyone you see right now there’s DNA characteristics that were set years and years ago before they were born. To me, that’s Langston Hughes.” CS

FRESH OFF her seven-year stint in Brooklyn, Tamara Garvey is back in the city she loves. Her exhibition at Gallery Espresso tthrough December is her first solo show.

Garvey’s work is whimsical and cute, and she loves creating that feeling of delight through her work. She hides Easter eggs of cute drawings in her work as a reward for getting up close.

We talked with Garvey last week about selling yourself, the persistence of pen and ink, and the Savannah-Brooklyn comparison.

How did you get involved with Gallery Espresso to have the show?

Garvey: The cool thing is, when I first moved back to Savannah, I was hustling and networking and sending emails. I sent one to Gallery Espresso with a few images.

Jessica [Barnhill] contacted me and was like, “Hey, we had a cancellation,” and she was replying to my email from a year ago.

That was heartening. I think with art and a freelance business, you’re planting seeds around business-wise. You have to be a little assertive and always hustling. You’re putting things out there, and it might not happen immediately, but it’s the little seeds you plant.

I read somewhere that, if someone is new to your name or brand, it takes seven times of seeing it around somewhere before they purchase something.

What made you decide to head to Brooklyn?

Garvey: I lived in Savannah and went to SCAD here for a couple years. I was really happy here and figured I would come back, but I wanted to try Brooklyn out. I showed in Telfair’s Art Fair and sold some art, and I thought, “Maybe I should try somewhere bigger. Okay, New York. Ramp it up a notch.” When the idea occurred, it felt intimidating, but that’s maybe exactly why I should do it.

I knew I wouldn’t be there forever. I said I was going for two to three years, as long as it takes to build my career, which in retrospect is hilariously naïve. I ended up being there for seven years.

Savannah draws a lot of comparisons to Brooklyn, and I’m curious if you agree.

Garvey: It was funny, when I first moved thee, every time I went to a house party I would always come across people who went to SCAD. There’s such an exchange of people between Savannah and Bushwick!

I will say, after moving back from being seven years away, I see the difference [in Savannah] pretty starkly. It has gotten more Brooklyn-y because there are more bougie restaurants [laughs].

I can also imagine Starland has changed pretty drastically into the artistic hub it is now.

Garvey: It’s this mash-up of cute upscale and student-y things. Things like Starlandia [Creative Supply]—it’s such a brilliant idea to have a used shop of art supplies. Everywhere should have that.

at the time, I was always reading that Starland was the new up-and-coming student neighborhood. Even by the end of my [first] five years here, it hadn’t quite taken off. But now, it has. You can walk around and find a lot of businesses and a frame shop. The further north you go, it’s really different, but there’s not a lack of small businesses, just that they are a little bit deeper into the historic district.

Did you see any differences in Savannah’s tourism?

Garvey: I work part time at shopSCAD and I sell my prints there. Savannah is a lot more touristy now, so when you’re walking the streets, it might be busier, but the upside is I sell a thing. That was a huge part of why in New York I could sell things. I sold at a craft market and there was a huge volume of people to sell to. To be back in Savannah and see there’s a higher volume, you get the best of both worlds. It’s a beautiful, charming, easier pace of life, but there are a lot of people here breathing in and out and they’re going to shop here.

WILL moviegoers be facing a winter wonderland or merely a big chill?

That’s always the question asked at this time of year, when the holiday film season begins its sprint toward the finish line of December 31. It’s that window of opportunity when studios hope their year-end movies will be successful enough to rake in gobs of cash, gobs of awards, or gobs of both.

With that in mind, here’s a checklist of the handful of films coming our way throughout the rest of December. And since we’re feeling the generous spirit of the season, we’re also offering a peek at the 2018 movies that will only be opening in New York and Los Angeles this month to qualify for Oscar consideration but will then be hitting the rest of the country in January 2019.

DECEMBER 12: The R-rated Deadpool 2 returns to theaters as the PG-13 Once Upon a Deadpool, with the excision of reams of profanity and gore and the addition of framing sequences featuring Fred Savage in The Princess Bride mode.

There are seniors in our community who are hungry. You can make a difference by volunteering one hour a week to delivering Meals on Wheels to homebound seniors.

We have routes throughout Savannah, so we can match you to an area that is convenient. Training included. Volunteers use their own vehicle. Gas stipend is optional. There are over 500 seniors on the waiting list to receive meals, and the number continues to grow. Help Wanted Principal Development Engineer sought by JCB Inc., in Pooler, GA to research, design and evaluate JCB’s products and equipment to meet requirements, develop and monitor all aspects of production at JCB, and ensure that all JCB products conform to internal and external standards by liaising with the design team to modify designs in response to concerns raised in the testing program. We require three years of test experience within the heavy equipment manufacturing industry as well as hands-on experience with developing systems, processes, methodologies, and overall machine performance, including experience with a wide variety of hand and power tools including lathe, welding equipment, oxy acetylene cutting, overhead crane, hydraulic hose cutting and crimping and measuring equipment.

Among these three years, two years of experience conducting and writing conformance evidence to international standards of off highway equipment; i.e SAE, ISO, and EN. Among these three years, two years of experience engaged in prototype machine and component testing; calibration of measuring equipment; generating development records and test reports; implementing machine and component test programs; as well as procurement of materials and components for test equipment. Among these three years, one year experience with assembling and maintaining development/prototype machines or prototype machine parts; conducting mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic fitting work; and building machine/ component test rigs.

Extensive knowledge of diagnostic, instrumentation, data acquisition/processing software in the areas of hydraulic, structural, electronic/electrical systems is required.
