THE TOTAL voter turnout in Chatham County for last week’s primary and school board elections was 17.45 percent.

Keep in mind that’s 17.45 percent of registered voters, not all citizens of voting age, less than half of whom are registered.

So as usual, a very small percentage of people determines the future. It’s embarrassing, but not that surprising.

It’s always in vogue to criticize voter turnout numbers, which are never high enough. But in my experience, the people most vocal about saying “It doesn’t matter who you vote for, as long as you go vote” are the same people most vocal in complaining about the results of the election.

And if people harnessed even ten percent of the energy they spend complaining on Facebook into action locally — such as researching the issues, for starters – we’d certainly be in better shape overall.

But invariably people, me included, like to use low voter turnout as a way to support all kinds of personal theories, miraculously few of which ever call their own side’s judgement into question.

The facts about this particular election are a bit more mundane. Ostensibly to save taxpayer money, the local school board elections were moved to May to coincide with major party primaries.

This in itself is confusing, because school board races here are completely non-partisan. So voters had a mish-mash of offices to vote for, some on a party ticket, some not.

The end of May is also when school is out and people are planning for graduation. So in Chatham County, the families most affected by school board elections are the families most distracted and the most focused on putting school politics behind them.

The icing on the cake this year was three, count ‘em, three commencement ceremonies happening on Election Day proper.

Indeed, one would be forgiven for arguing that the system is intended to drive down voter participation as much as possible. That would be the most popular criticism and the one that will get the most clicks.

But as usual the truth is somewhere in the middle.

If you were unable to vote on Election Day, there were several weeks of early voting available. There was no lack of media coverage of the election, if you chose to find it. There was no lack of candidate forums to hear more from the candidates themselves.

You can complain about voter participation all you want, but one thing I’ve learned working in the media is that you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink.

All the media coverage and candidate forums in the world don’t matter if people don’t tune in, open the newspaper, show up to the forums, and show up to vote.

As for the results on the school board president election, they were on par with expectations, with one big difference.

Virtually everyone I spoke to before the election said it would go to a runoff, almost certainly between Joe Buck, a former school board president seeking a third, non-consecutive term, and Tye Whitely, a relative newcomer who wowed the (small) crowds at all the forums with her passion and populist approach.

Turns out that was half right: Buck did get nearly half the vote all by himself, a testament to both his very high name ID and the general good regard with which he’s held in the community at large.

But the person to make it into the runoff with Buck wasn’t Whitely, but Betty Morgan, who finished with about 24 percent of the vote to Whitely’s 19 percent.

My takeaway from that is that it’s just not enough to have young, progressive support within the faculty community, which seemed to be Whitely’s main base.

Those voters are extremely important in that they do make sure to vote, but there simply aren’t as many of them as their vocal presence might indicate.

(The local daily paper’s somewhat bizarre suggestion that current Board President Jolene Byrne’s endorsement of Whitely is what sunk Whitely’s campaign is not only laughably absurd, but a slap in the face to Betty Morgan, who ran a solid, if under-the-radar, campaign and who is no slouch in terms of personal and professional accomplishments herself.)

As is depressingly common in this area, we’re left once again with an election at least on the surface defined by race.

Buck is white, Morgan is black, and many voters unfortunately will make up their mind based on that alone.

That said, both candidates are mature, reasonable people and neither one seems focused on racial issues that are not, in fact, germane to the local discussion.

There are some issues involving local schools which do in fact involve race, and thus must be a part of the discussion — such as the very real threats of school re-segregation, the status of local choice schools, and inequality of resources throughout the district.

In any case, the runoff is July 24, right in the middle of summer, with many school families away on vacation.

We here will do our best to cover this extremely important election with farreaching ramifications on local life.

But we can’t vote for everyone.

It’s up to the voters to pay attention to local media coverage, and to show up to or watch the candidate forums, and to actually go vote on Election Day, or to vote early if they can. CS

Stopping the cycle of school violence

Editor, The criminals that haunt our schools do so because our schools have failed to protect our children. They have failed to be proactive. T Instead of preparing for the worst, our schools continue to use outdated programs that foster inability and fear. Most schools in our area use the

Avoid, Deter, Defend (ADD) program, where the key to success is school staff’s ability to hide or lock down the students.

We have witnessed over the past year how this approach fails to work during active shooter situations and how programs such as these are no longer effective options.

Instead of a being a soft target for mentally ill killers, like arguably every active shooter

event this past year, it’s time to fight back.

There must be action—not plastering the shooter’s face all over news and social—but more comprehensive active shooter preparation within our schools.

If schools are unwilling or fiscally unable to put more guards in our schools, then they must train those they have available: our teachers.

By arming teachers with the

knowledge to recognize and respond to an active shooter situation they can assist resource officers on the scene.

Never underestimate our teachers.

With proper training and proactive planning, we can build a safe environment, conducive to learning, that can be protected during an active shooter event.

Tactical urbanism deploys to Starland

WHAT DO you get when you combine cinder blocks, house paint, traffic cones, lawn chairs, and trees still in containers from the plant nursery, with a small group of civic-minded volunteers? A safer, friendlier street. At least temporarily.

That was the outcome of an effort organized by Starlandia art supply proprietor and Thomas Square Historic Neighborhood Association President Clinton Edminster. “Starland Street Experiment: Imagining Kinder Streets” — which deployed temporary crosswalks, curb extensions, signage, and street furniture on Bull Street between 38th and 41st streets — is an example of “tactical urbanism.”

This approach describes “a city, organizational, and/or citizen-led approach to neighborhood building using short-term, low-cost, and scalable interventions to catalyze long-term change,” according to “Tactical Urbanism: Short-term Action for Long-term Change” published in 2015.

Edminster said the project was “designed to demonstrate to our neighborhood a variety of traffic calming techniques.”

He said, “I believe that most people don’t consider traffic engineering a domain that they have permission to think about — it’s always someone else that makes those decisions. Our purpose was to showcase the effectiveness of crosswalks, curb extensions, and signage — all things that exist on other streets in Savannah — and to get our neighbors excited about the possibility of a kinder street: kinder for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.”

The results were unveiled on May 19 when residents and visitors were able to dine at street side tables, more confidently cross the street using temporary cross walks, and enjoy a cool glass of lemonade while relaxing in a “parklet,” a small park created in a car parking space.

Edminster also led a tour for the Congress for the New Urbanism, a conference bringing more than 1,600 urban planners, architects, and advocates to Savannah.

Edminster said people have not been shy about sharing their comments.

“We have received a tremendous amount of public feedback. Being open to both positive and negative reactions is crucial to this process,” he said.

Interestingly, Edminster said the negative responses were especially helpful.

“In one of our demonstrations we had negative reactions about the parking spots that were removed in order to create a safe crosswalk,” he said. “We looked at our plan and realized that there was an opportunity to redesign the crosswalk so as not to remove any parking spots.”

The crosswalks, which were painted with latex paint so they could be easily be removed with a pressure washer, were designed using guidance and input from the City of Savannah’s Traffic Engineering Department, which Edminster described as “incredibly valuable.”

By using designs based on established standards for traffic control pavement markings, the demonstration could reflect what is “realistic and possible,” he said.

By the time Caila Brown finished painting the second of the two crosswalks, she had become something of an old hand at it. It took about 45 minutes to apply and another 15 or so to dry.

Brown is chair of the Savannah Bicycle Campaign board of directors and Complete Streets program coordinator for Georgia Bikes. Her involvement with the project is related to her work for Georgia’s statewide bicycle advocacy organization.

“Tactical urbanism projects that focus around transportation needs can provide test environments for long-term change like protected bike lanes, safer crosswalks, and connected sidewalks. They allow the community to have a greater say in what is invested in — and needed — in their neighborhoods,” she said.

Brown said the advantages of tactical urbanism undertaken by volunteers in cooperation with city staff are clear.

“From the government’s perspective, tactical urbanism projects are usually more cost-effective and rely less on staff

When residents are involved, the result is even more powerful, Brown explained.

“The people in our neighborhoods can see the real impact when they lack crosswalks, sidewalks, and bike lanes in their community, and they are uniquely positioned to best advocate for the change they need to flourish,” she said.

Brown said she started receiving comments as soon as the paint was dry.

“Business owners have remarked to me in the week after painting the crosswalks that motor vehicle speeds have slowed, people are able to safely cross, and people enjoy being on the sidewalks in that section of Bull Street instead of rushing to their next destination,” Brown said.

On May 19, residents from Bingville, Ardsley Park, Baldwin Park, Parkside, the Victorian District, and the National Landmark District were able to observe and be a part of the experiment. As a result, Brown said tactical urbanism won’t be limited to Starland for long.

“Savannahians from other neighborhoods are asking how to create similar projects in their communities and I am excited to see how we can support their efforts to create safer spaces,” she said. CS

A CHATHAM County grand jury’s decision last week not to charge Savannah Police in the shooting death of Ricky Boyd brought vindication to an embattled new police chief, and also brought vows to continue the fight from Boyd’s family.

“Between the tragic events of Jan. 23 and the decision, the public has been subjected to a one-sided, calculated campaign of misinformation,” said Savannah Police Chief Mark Revenew in a statement shortly after the grand jury’s decision.

“The evidence and independent witnesses’ statements, which have been presented to the grand jury and the media, undercuts and disproves these allegations.”

The incident happened literally Revenew’s first day on the job as then-interim Savannah Police Chief.

Dark and grainy bodycam footage, finally released to the public after the grand jury’s decision, appears to show Boyd gesturing in a threatening manner as he exits the house on Marian Circle where police had come to serve a murder warrant on him for the killing of Balil Whitfield two days earlier.

Almost immediately, a hail of gunfire erupts and Boyd falls to the front porch.

The bodycam footage came from a Savannah Police officer.

U.S. Marshals, also involved in the incident, typically don’t wear bodycams.

After initially saying Boyd fired on them with an actual firearm, police later changed their account to say that Boyd brandished a BB gun.

However, the Boyd family attorney, William Claiborne, said the BB gun was found almost 50 feet away from Boyd’s body.

During the incident, a Savannah Police officer received gunshot wounds. Police now say, after months of releasing no information, that the local officer was accidentally shot by one of the U.S. Marshals.

Police say, and the grand jury agreed, that the BB gun was moved by a police officer during the chaos.

“We have intentionally remained quiet throughout the course of this process in an effort to preserve its integrity. At each stage of the events leading up to, during and following this tragedy, we have neither interfered with nor attempted to influence the outcome. The public should have total confidence in the process and its result,” Chief Revenew said.

Why is Asian earwax different from black and white people’s earwax?

According to Science News, “If you would describe yourself as white or black, your earwax is probably yellow and sticky. If you are East Asian or Native American, it’s likely to be dry and white.” Is there DNA or other evidence available to show when this difference arose?—am77494, via the Straight Dope Message Board IF YOU’D asked this question not too many years ago, AM, I couldn’t have told you much: we’ve long known there are two types of earwax without knowing a ton more about it.

These are, however, heady times for earwax enthusiasts, as researchers continue to dig out unexpected insights about this lowly substance.

As one organic chemist recently put it, we’re at “the beginning of exploring a new and interesting biofluid secretion that has not been looked at in this manner.” And you thought the future was in self-driving cars.

It’s been understood for a while that the consistency of one’s earwax is a genetic trait, distributed ethnogeographically as your quote describes.

Nearly everyone of African descent and most people of European descent have the yellow-brown, sticky kind, called wet earwax; the dry, pale, crumbly kind prevails in East Asia; in between, in central and South Asia, both types are common.

Since it’s our current understanding that modern humanity first arose in Africa and, starting around 70,000 years ago, fanned out from there to populate the globe, it seemed likely that wet wax was the original kind—the ur-wax—and dry wax the more recent variant. Over the last decade-plus, though, research out of Japan has helped confirm this idea and broken the earwax field wide open: • In 2006 Yoshiura et al. announced they’d identified the gene that determines earwax type, called ABCC11; when the gene is deactivated, dry wax is the result.

Based on the near-ubiquity of the recessive dry form of the gene in Korea and northern China, the authors concluded that this mutation must have originated in northern Asia following the migration from Africa, and suggested that it may have been an adaptation to a colder climate.

• In 2011, Ohashi, Naka, and Tsuchiya added new findings to the ABCC11 story: (1) Using modern prevalence of the drywax gene as the basis for probability simulations, the authors estimated that the dry form of the gene diverged from the default wet version 2,006 generations back, or about 50,000 years ago (which lines up well timingwise with the out-ofAfrica theory); (2) the speed with which the new gene spread through Asia suggests it conferred some evolutionary advantage; and (3) among modern Asian, Native

American, and European populations alike, the dry-wax gene is more common the further north you go—supporting the earlier idea that maybe it helped humans thrive in the cold.

How, though? Dry earwax doesn’t keep you warm, does it? No, no. The key is that the ears’ ceruminous glands, where wax is produced, are basically souped-up versions of apocrine glands, one of our body’s two types of sweat glands; the sweat-producing apocrine glands are found in the groin and armpits, and around the nipples.

So one might guess, as the Yoshiura team did, that the real adaptational action here had to do with apocrine activity and its role in heat regulation under colder conditions. The change in earwax was apparently a kind of by-product.

But it remains an indicative one. Yoshiura et al. noted the longstanding observation that in Asian populations where dry wax is common, sweaty armpits and body odor are rare. Their further research demonstrated in 2009 that earwax type and armpit sweat are strongly associated genetically, and that ABCC11 evidently codes for both.

This all makes sense—the apocrine glands (as you may have guessed from their location) are also the odorous ones, secreting various smelly proteins and lipids, and these are the ones East Asians tend to have fewer of. (The other type of human sweat glands, the eccrine glands, exude mostly water and salt; everyone’s got lots of those.)

In a 2006 paper from Korea, where dry wax is the norm, doctors reported that out of 896 patients who’d received surgical treatment for problematic b.o., 860 of them happened to have wet wax.

It’s hard to imagine how earwax knowledge will transform the human experience, but I guess we’ll see. Looking at

survey data, a paper from 2013 found that 78 percent of those relatively few white Europeans who have the dry-wax gene use deodorant even though their sweat output probably doesn’t warrant it; the authors suggest personalized genetic profiles could mean “potential cost saving to the nonodorous.”

Elsewhere, scientists at Philadelphia’s Monell Center, a nonprofit institute specializing in taste and smell, are calling earwax “a new frontier of human odor information.” A 2014 Monell study projected that analyzing the odorous compounds in an earwax sample could potentially yield all kinds of information about the person it came from: sex, ethnicity, diseases they have, food they’ve eaten.

Gross and at least a bit worrisome, sure, but someday it’ll make for a great episode of CSI: Ear, Nose, and Throat.

Savannah Police officer killed while responding to accident scene on I-16

The morning of Friday, May 25, Savannah Police Officer Anthony Christie, 37, was fatally wounded after his patrol car was struck by a tractor trailer on Interstate 16.

“About 2:30 a.m. SPD officers responded to a head-on collision on eastbound I-16 at Dean Forest Road that was the result of a vehicle traveling the wrong way,” police said.

“The crash resulted in the closure of eastbound lanes while officers and our Traffic Investigation Unit managed the scene,” police report.

Officer Christie and multiple other SPD officers responded to the scene to assist with traffic control.

“Officer Christie was parked in his patrol car with lights activated in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 16 to divert traffic off of the interstate onto Dean Forest when a tractor trailer struck the side of his vehicle, resulting in critical injuries to the officer. He later succumbed to those injuries,” police say.

Christie, a decorated war veteran, has served with Savannah Police Department since December 2015 and was officially sworn in on May 19, 2016. He was assigned to the Central Precinct.

He, along with other officers, was awarded a Team Work Award for assisting in the search and rescue of a missing child who was abandoned in the woods by a robbery suspect in 2016.

Prior to his law enforcement career, Christie served his country for 13 years in the Navy as a Master-at-Arms Second Class in the 4th Fleet and remains a reservist.

“Officer Christie was doing what many of our officers do every day when he was tragically struck this morning,” said Chief Mark Revenew.

Chaplains and EAP will be providing support to officers, family, friends and co-workers in the wake of this incident.

Letitia Chai, Cornell University class of 2018, arrived at her “Acting in Public: Performance in Everyday Life” class on May 2 ready to present a trial run of her senior thesis wearing a button-down shirt and cutoff denim shorts. Professor Rebekah Maggor was displeased, however, and asked Chai, “Is that really what you would wear?” She referred specifically to Chai’s “too short” shorts and told Chai that her clothing choices would distract “men’s attention” from the content of her presentation. Chai left the room, but soon returned wearing just her bra and panties and delivered the entirety of her presentation. On May 5, she returned to the classroom to officially present her thesis and stripped down again, with more than two dozen others in the room joining her in bras and panties or boxers. Chai posted on Facebook about the incidents, telling The Cornell Daily Sun she wanted to raise awareness about this “huge societal issue.”

In Hudson, Florida, Brandon Donald McCray, 47, came unglued on May 1 after discovering two of his socks missing.

When suspicion fell on his roommate, Frank Smith, 53, McCray attacked him with a sword, according to WTVT. The

attack continued as McCray also struck and injured two women living at the home.

Pasco County Sheriff’s deputies said Smith nearly lost several fingers trying to defend himself. Deputies arrested McCray at a neighbor’s house on charges of attempted homicide and battery.

Dimitri the Husky can thank a Good Samaritan for reporting that someone was abusing a dog in Lantana, Florida, on May 10. Palm Beach County Sheriff’s officers arrived at the apartment home of Patrick Shurod Campbell, 27, where two roommates said Campbell “beat the hell” out of Dimitri, the Palm Beach Post reported.

Officers found the 2-year-old dog locked in a dark closet, shaking and submissive, with a bloody ear. Campbell told police he had bitten the dog to “establish dominance.”

Campbell was charged with aggravated animal cruelty; Dimitri was turned over to Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control for treatment and re-homing.

Remme didn’t realize he’d been shot until his pant leg started to turn purple. Balew, however, “thought he was in trouble for doing something wrong,” Remme said. He “laid down beside me and cried.”

A French museum dedicated to the work of painter Etienne Terrus announced April 27 that more than half of its collection from the 19th-century artist are forgeries.

The Terrus museum in Elne, where Terrus was born, gathered a group of experts to inspect the works after a visiting art historian noticed some of the paintings depict buildings that were not constructed until after Terrus’ death. In all, 82 paintings were determined to be fake. BBC News reported that the town’s mayor, Yves Barniol, called the situation “a disaster” and apologized to museum visitors.

He upped the ante at Kroger, offering to purchase her for $200 and commenting on the little girl’s pretty hair. The grandmother confronted Samimi, drawing a large crowd of shoppers who chased him through the store and to his car. Police arrested Samimi at his home on charges of enticing a child and criminal solicitation.

Friends of Ben hold annual memorial jam, inspire new generations of musicians

EVEN IN MEMORY, Ben Tucker keeps the music playing.

The beloved Savannah bassist, who was tragically killed in an accident in 2013, will be honored at the fifth annual Ben Tucker Memorial Jazz Jam, a free, all-ages musical celebration in Wright Square.

This year, some of Savannah’s finest players will honor Tucker’s legacy through song: Teddy Adams on trombone, Randy Reese on saxophone and flute, Eric Jones on piano, Mitch Hennis on bass, Robert Saunders on drums, Kirk Lee on trumpet, Howard Paul, and Gina Rene on vocals.

Friends of Ben Vice President Larry Broussard can’t quite remember when he first met Tucker, but he does hold many fond memories of Tucker’s warmth toward everyone he met.

“You caught him working with people of all races, all ages. To me, Ben was colorblind—he just saw eyes, smiles, and someone to put his blessing on. It’s a quality we need more of today.”

Tucker created instant bonds when greeting new people.

“He immediately cared about you,” Broussard remembers.

Tucker lived a full life as a musician and friend, performing on hundreds of recordings with the likes of Quincy Jones, Art Pepper, Billy Taylor and many more.

He penned the jazz classic “Comin’ Home Baby!” in 1961; the song would go on to be a hit for the singer Mel Torme.

Through it all, Tucker was a giver and a helper—and that kind spirit led to some of his greatest successes.

“Ben was working up in New York with another individual doing TV and ads,” Broussard explains. “There was one gentleman working in the studio, one of the execs—his son had a learning disability for mathematics. They worked up a program based on the idea, ‘If you can sing it, you can remember it.’”

It was the foundation for the wildly successful Schoolhouse Rock series.

“That was just one person helping another, and it turned into millions,” marvels Broussard. “And through that, he touched us all.”

Since its founding, Friends of Ben, Inc. has honored Tucker’s giving nature and musical legacy through community initiatives and heartfelt memorials.

The group restored Tucker’s beloved bass, Bertha, created a scholarship for promising young musicians, and launched “Keep the Music Playing,” an instrument donation program.

“Students that can’t afford a sax, a clarinet, a trumpet….if we put it in their

hands, it helps educate and inspire,” says Broussard.

“Ben Tucker made this possible! It helps instill learning in them. We’re trying to make the next Ben Tucker—a child that doesn’t have the resources, but has the passion, has the love for the music and wants to be a musician.”

Broussard hopes that young folks can learn from Tucker’s passion for community and openheartedness.

“We miss him, but at the same time, he isn’t gone,” Broussard says. “When you really start to think about it full circle, he inspired and motivated and pushed for better things in his lifetime. We hope to pass on the torch and continue this.”

Ben’s Memorial Jam is a joyful celebration of music, and attendees are encouraged to get there early to enjoy the two-hour program. Lawn chairs, picnic baskets, and blankets are welcome.

WEATHER THE SUMMER HEAT WITH QUINTRON Musician/inventor brings Weather Warlock synthesizer to Starland Dairy bash

FANS OF American punk history, weirdo inventions, and sludge metal will all be satisfied with the Friday bash that Graveface Records and Curiosities has in store.

Amid First Friday fun, the Starland Dairy will transform into a den of drone with sonic adventurer Quintron at the helm of his newest project, Weather Warlock.

The Starland Dairy has become Graveface’s official outdoor stage—the neighborhood anchor, covered in years of graffiti and sprawling plants, was the stage for the shop’s big Night Before Stopover concert as well as their Record Store Day band extravaganza. “[The owner] is branding it as a place that should be used for these kind of things,” Graveface says. “I’m in a position to do that. It’s a perfect marriage.”

It’s common for developers to throw the word “community” around while discussing plans for neighborhood change, but Graveface is confident in Starland Dairy’s progress.

“I think they are the correct people to own that structure, because he listens, has good ideas, and they don’t seem to be demolishing anything—they’re just going to make that a useable space,” says Graveface.

The area where Graveface currently hosts shows will, essentially, remain as-is as an outdoor patio and shared space.

“They are interested in making the community happy, but not in a fake way,” he says. “I’m happy they want me involved—they’ve been very supportive of Graveface.”

Quintron is no stranger to Savannah— he’s played here solo and with Quintron & Miss Pussycat for many years. In that time, the synthesizer wiz has brought all manner of inventions on tour, but this is the first time Savannah gets to see The Weather Warlock.

Quintron began developing the low-voltage, weather-controlled drone in 2011. The first base station, named Weather Warlock, was completed in Spring 2014 at the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation.

The entirely analog synthesizer uses weather sensors that detect temperature, wind, sun and rain, producing a range of tones and harmonics based around a consonant F major chords.

In building the website Weather for the Blind, Quintron hopes that streamed audio 22 of the instrument—available every day

and night for free—will help folks struggling with sleep disorders, stress, or health issues.

It’s recommended for people working in windowless offices, too, who will tune into the direct link of sound and nature.

Weather Warlock is a live touring band that performs with the synthesizer. This time, Quintron will perform and handle the weather synth, with EyeHateGod’s Aaron Hill on drums, Gary Wrong on guitar, Kunal Prakash on guitar, and more very special guests.

“It tends to be a pretty cool, communal affair,” Graveface says. “They tend to use local players on tour. People who are more diverse, musically, with unique instruments.”

Before Weather Warlock cues up, Savannahians get to see Controller, a new project from Laura Pleasants and Corey Barhorst.

Pleasants and Barhorst played together for years in Kylesa, before Barhorst parted from the band; most recently, Pleasants took a new project, The Discussion, on a European tour. Barhorst currently plays bass in Black Tusk.

In addition to live music, attendees get the opportunity to meet a punk legend. In the Graveface Annex, Cynthia Connolly will be signing the seventh edition of her iconic book Banned in D.C. The book, first published in 1988, documented the Washington, D.C. punk scene through photos, flyers, stories, and more.

If you’re not familiar with Connolly’s name or photography, you’ve likely seen her most famous work: the black sheep on Minor Threat’s classic LP Out of Step was drawn by a 19-year-old Connolly in crayon and watercolor.

Connolly will also present a slideshow, chat about discovering art and the DIY scene, and sign books at her appearance.

The new printing includes an eight-page afterword and is available for $25 cash.

Perfect timing and wild luck led these Southern and East Coast scene fixtures together: Quintron, Laura Pleasants, and Cynthia Connolly may tread different paths, but each brings raw work ethic and a bravery for sharing the unusual and experimental with the world.

As for what that Weather Warlock is going to pick up on a humid summer day in Savannah?

“It’s probably going to be a sludgy, slow howl,” Graveface cracks. CS

Attendees will hear Duplessie use his voice, the didgeridoo, singing bowls, hand drums, and stringed instruments from around the world. Ancient instruments are fed through a loop station to bring listeners into a state of meditation.

CMT Edge has called them “one of the most promising bands on the bluegrass scene,” and they’re heading our way. The Barefoot Movement brings their Nashville sound to Bloomingdale this weekend.

The band began when fidler Noah Wall met mandolinist Tommy Norris in high school. After studying music in college (Wall at East Tennessee State’s Bluegrass, Old-Time and Country Music program, Norris at Western Carolina University for Classical Music and Recording Engineering), the band kicked off their shoes and began taking on the old time scene.

Seven years into their career, the four-piece plays delicate, emotive arrangements and high-energy boot stompers with equal passion. As International Bluegrass Music Association’s 2014 Band of the Year, it’s sure to be an entertaining show to remember.

Rochester-based DJ and producer Jacon Stanczak has been performing as Kill The Noise since 2003. In addition to performing at festivals like Coachella and Lollapalooza, he has worked on many film soundtracks, including Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Zoolander 2, and more.

Kill the Noise’s Killumination tour comes to Elan this weekend. The artist’s latest record, Occult Classic, features contributions from AWOLNATION, Dillon Francis, Stalking Gia, and R. City. Listeners can catch the influence of electro-house, disco, and dubstep on the record.

Three talented singer-songwriters bring their projects to El-Rocko this Friday.

Tallahassee’s Winded began as a solo project and has expanded to a band. Winded’s emotive bedroom folk/pop arrangements are minimal, tender things for intimate, introspective listening. The EP ‘see you in hell, schwartz,’ released in January 2017, is currently available through New Orleans-based Community Records.

Winded is joined by Augusta’s Cherry Blossom, an indie/shoegaze/ emo three-piece. Stream the band’s EP ‘Belvedere’ on Bandcamp.

While Cole says the actual sport of baseball is just one part of the Bananas experience, he insists that the circus atmosphere contributes to the product on the field.

Indeed, the Bananas won the CPL championship their first year in existence, and made it to the semifinals their most recent second season. Last year the Bananas had

the best home record in the CPL. Cole says the team’s prowess on the diamond is no coincidence.

“Our mission is to make the best fan experience possible. That goes for the players as well – we consider them our biggest fans,” he says. “We want to give these

ONE OF the greatest local success stories in recent history, the Savannah Bananas begin their third season this week.

The team’s sheer marketing genius shows no signs of slowing down. Opening day this Thursday at Historic Grayson Stadium brings a relentlessly hyped bloodmatch with Coastal Plain League “rival,” the Macon Bacon.

Except the Macon Bacon are a brandnew team who have never played a single game in the league, much less ever played their “archnemesis,” the Bananas.

But you have to embrace the absurdity to fully enjoy the phenomenon of The Savannah Bananas.

“This isn’t just a baseball game. We are about entertainment 24/7,” says the everengaging team owner Jesse Cole, aka “the Man in the Yellow Tux.” “The ball game is part of a much bigger picture,” he says.

That bigger picture, as every Bananas fan knows, includes family fun, a constant diet of contests and routines between innings, and a literal constant diet of allyou-can-eat items as part of the general admission ticket price.

players the most memorable summer they’ve ever had.”

As a college summer league, the CPL comprises college baseball players in a non-NCAA setting. This means the players, while still amateur, get to play “real” baseball with a wooden bat instead of the aluminum bat the NCAA requires.

The young players’ obvious glee at playing is part of the fan experience.

“Some of these guys, if they go on to play pro ball in the minor leagues, they’ll be playing for maybe 500 people a night, or 400, or 300,” Cole explains. “But in Savannah they’re playing for a sold-out crowd of 4,000 at every home game.”

Indeed, a Bananas game is the hottest ticket in town; Cole says there are less than 600 tickets left for all the home games in June put together.

“People always ask me, since you’re so successful why don’t you add seats? But we did – for the second season we added 200 seats, and for this season we’ve added another 200,” Cole says.

The Bananas team works hard at coming up with new ideas to entertain fans every year. The most important job in this area is the “Director of Fun,” the master of ceremonies who runs the various games and hijinks to hype up the crowd for nine solid innings.

The Bananas have a new Director of Fun this year, Tyler Gray, who was – wait for it – literally a cruise ship activities director at his last job.

“That’s a big hire for us. Hundreds of people applied for that job,” says Cole.

“We had actors from L.A., comedians from New York City, all wanting that job.

Cole laughs and says, “Tyler doesn’t know much about baseball so this is a new and different challenge for him. He was on a cruise ship 24/7. But he’s perfect for us – as you know, we want to make everything a show for the fans.

Cole says he doesn’t want to give away too many secrets before the season starts. “ But we have come up with a lot of new ways to add to the Savannah Bananas experience. I will tell you we’re exploring ways to take the shows out to the plaza outside Grayson Stadium, up in the stands.

We’ve expanded the size of our pep band,” he says.

“We are looking at our own version of the ESPN Game Day show with a set

outside the stadium, live streaming it on Facebook before the games,” says Cole.

“We want to dominate the circus.”

Cole says a series of very successful concerts, most of them country shows, at Grayson Stadium over the off-season led to another new Bananas offering.

“We started selling rum drinks at the concerts at the Stadium over the summer, and they killed. So we’re doing that,” says Cole. “And we’ll have a lemonade stand outside the Stadium, selling kids’ lemonade and ‘adult lemonade.’”

Cole’s spirit of fan engagement is infectious. He recalls the time when Russell Wilson – yes, that Russell Wilson, later a star NFL quarterback – played baseball for none other than… the CPL’s own Gastonia Grizzlies.

“Russell Wilson played for one of our teams in 2009, before he was Russell Wilson,” laughs Cole. “Before a game we told the players to give kids a high-five as they were going to the dugout. When the game was starting, we were like, where’s Russell? We looked around and saw him still going through the stands high-fiving every single kid he could find.”

WHAT DOES it mean to be an American?

Can that definition be universal? Can it evolve?

Acclaimed Atlanta artist Sheila Pree Bright sought the answers to that question in her Young Americans series, which she began in 2006 when Barack Obama was running for president.

“All of my work has always dealt with the issue of the unheard and giving the unheard a voice, and that was the young people,” says Bright. “When you think about young people, you think of the negative.”

So Bright sought out young adults between the ages of 18 and 25 and photographed them with the American flag in a pose of their choosing. She also asked them to make a statement.

“I had one question: What does it mean to be an American in the 21st century?” she recounts. “I was the observer and they made the statement. One thing I got out of all of them, whether they were AfricanAmerican or Asian or even white, all of them were troubled with the Bush administration and what was going on in their world. They knew they had to take on the burden and it’s going to be passed on to all of them, but to all of them, the flag is still the stars and stripes. Nobody actually wanted to burn the flag because they still actually respected America. But also, they were sick of the crumbling institution.”

The notion of the American flag being used as a symbol for a political ideology is perhaps even more relevant today than it was in 2006, partially due to the NFL’s ongoing issue over the national anthem, but Bright doesn’t have any plans to resurrect the series.

“I’ve had some of the original Young Americans contact me to ask if I would do the project with Generation Z, the biggest generation in history,” she says. “An evolution would really speak to our current political climate —we’re living in reality, but it’s so surreal. I feel like I’ve already done that before, though. When it comes to artwork, you can always continue it in dif30 ferent ways.”

The Telfair is adding Young Americans to its ongoing exhibition “Complex Uncertainties: Artists in Postwar America,” which examines artists’ responses to historical issues and societal issues.

Bright’s work fits seamlessly in the exhibition, as she has always been concerned with the younger generation’s response to their world.

The Young Americans series evolved from another of Bright’s projects, #1960Now, which she began in 2013 after Trayvon Martin’s murder.

“I was in the studio photographing photos of the elders of the civil rights movement that changed the face of the nation, and they were young at that age, too,” she recalls. “These were the unknown ones—it

was very important for me to photograph the unknown ones. It took so much more than Martin Luther King, Jr. for the movement.”

She saw the parallel between the young civil rights leaders in the 1960s and the young people organizing protests in Ferguson, Missouri, and Baltimore, Maryland.

“I decided to go to the ground to see what was happening with the young people, and they were fighting the same fight.

Nothing has changed,” she laments. “Now you have the Black Lives Matter movement, the Me Too movement, the March for Our Lives movement —it’s a protest within a protest. We as Americans do not come together as a people; we live in our tribes and talk about intersectionality, but

do we really want to come together? This is going to be the hard part. A lot of us have our own ideologies and it’s hard to break that. My whole purpose of my artwork is to use it to create dialogue.”

In this moment, Bright’s dialogue speaks to the uncertainty we face.

“We live in a world of uncertainty right now,” she muses. “We are all working through it and it comes to us. I feel that, with this body of work, you can actually learn from the young people in 2006 and see that hasn’t really changed, either.

Instead of looking at it and sharing it, how can we move forward? How do we evolve?

Nobody really knows. I think we have to go with our gut sometimes.” CS

MEMORIAL DAY has passed, so summer is officially in session. There is a lot to love about summer: time by the pool, vacation, BBQs, baseball, and the sound of cicadas.

Yardwork and the associated “lawnmower beer” are not my favorite parts of summer. Too often, light, watery lagers are consumed on hot summer days. We can do better.

The best summer beers are flavorful, low in ABV and in my opinion need to be light and crisp, no overwhelming malt or hops flavors.

There is nothing wrong with a good rich dark beer, but that’s not what most want on 100 degree Savannah day. Another summer factor is availability in cans -- no one wants broken glass in their pool.

This is a list of a good variety of summer time beers. Each is very different, so hopefully you’ll find something to drink while sitting by the pool, at the beach or after some time doing yardwork.

The Locals: Given the intensity of Savannah summers it should come as no surprise that all four of the local breweries have at least one beer that will be a thirst quencher during that Savannah heat.

Gun Bunny, Service Brewing Belgian Style Witbier, 5.1% ABV

Dedicated to the men and women who reload artillery on the battlefield, Gun Bunny is a Belgian-style witbier. Brewed with Indian coriander, tangelo peel and muddled mandarin oranges, Gun Bunny is a refreshing but flavorful summer option.

Now available in sharp looking cans, Service Brewing has made this summer seasonal very accessible this year.

Honorable mention to Service’s Savannah Banana beer Savannah Bananas Cerveza. This summer’s edition is not brewed with bananas but is a Mexican style lager.

Coco Pina, Coastal Empire Brewing German Style Gose, 3.8% ABV

Coastal took a traditional German Gose, brewed with pink Himalayan salts and Atlantic Sea salt then added pineapple and coconut to make a fantastic beach side beer. Coco Pina is fruity and tart enough to make any hot day feel cooler but low enough in ABV to keep your yardwork moving forward. Coco Pina was first brewed as a one-off but is now part of the

Available year round, Southbound’s take on a Belgian Wit is a bit more traditional.

Wit beers are just the best on a summer day, so you shouldn’t be surprised to see another entry on this list. Moon River’s version of the Belgian Wit is also spiced with coriander, as most wits are, but the citrus part of the spicing is traditional Curacao bitter orange peel. The 2017 Great American Beer Festival winner for Best Belgian Wit, Wild Wacky Wit is sure to satisfy. Available on draft and in growlers at Moon River.

While I think you should go local first, if you do want to expand beyond the Savannah area here are a few other options to give a try.

Oberon Ale, Bell’s Brewery, Inc. American Pale Wheat Ale, 5.8%

This is another beer with a high malted wheat content. It’s also brewed with Bell’s signature ale yeast yielding Oberon’s citrusy flavor. I’m not one for fruity flavors but the fruit here is subtle and just makes a lot of sense. It pushes the range of a sessionable beer at 5.8% and has a stronger flavor than some on this list but it’s a great go to summer beer.

Summer Solstice, Anderson Valley Cream Ale, 5%

Cream ales can sometimes be too sweet, but Summer Solstice hits a nice balance.

Summer Ale, Brooklyn Brewery English Pale Ale, 5%

Brooklyn’s Summer Ale is light and crisp with no overbearing flavors. It has a light citrus flavor balanced out by a touch of bready yeast.

SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY

OO I first saw Star Wars upon its original release during the summer of ’77, when I was a mere lad of 11. There I was loving it loving it loving it — a spunky princess! a dashing hero! an imposing villain! – and, after nearly an hour, figured it couldn’t get any better. I was wrong.

At the 48-minute mark, in saunters Han Solo, and this wholesome entertainment found the rough-hewn edge it needed to truly kick it into overdrive. As superbly played by Harrison Ford, Solo was a rogue, a scoundrel, a mercenary, and a guy who — before George Lucas got wimpy with the Special Editions — had no problem shooting first.

And until Lucas inexcusably regressed the character a tad in Return of the Jedi, Solo was a beautifully conceived and executed figure, and his initial appearance in Star Wars and subsequent maturation in The Empire Strikes Back marks him as the best character to ever set foot in a storyline that unfolded a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.

For the vast majority of my life, Han Solo has been — along with Atticus Finch, Indiana Jones, James Bond, and a few others — one of my defining cinematic heroes, which is why it pains me to see the character’s iconic dimensions reduced so drastically and dramatically in Solo: A Star Wars Story.

To be sure, the movie largely delivers on entertainment value, and while there are no specific moments that rank among the best in the franchise (even the muchmaligned prequels had some formidable set-pieces), the picture is zippy enough to earn a modest recommendation.

But while those folks who love all things Star Wars regardless of quality will adore it, those of us who grew up with the franchise since a young age and find it still rooted in our DNA deserved something better than what director Ron Howard and screenwriters Lawrence Kasdan and Jonathan Kasdan deliver.

The biggest hurdle, of course, was finding an actor who could do both Han Solo and Harrison Ford justice. Stepping into such an iconic character created by such a popular actor is a daunting task for any young thespian, and Alden Ehrenreich probably does as well as just about anyone else who might have been cast (certainly, he’s a better choice than such auditionees as Miles Teller, Dave Franco, Scott Eastwood and Aaron Taylor-Johnson).

Ehrenreich, so terrific in the Coens’ Hail, Caesar!, isn’t bad here, but he doesn’t

vanish into the character like Ewan McGregor did with Obi-Wan Kenobi. It was easy to see McGregor morph into Alec Guinness; it’s impossible to see Ehrenreich morph into Ford.

This isn’t entirely the actor’s fault, as the Kasdans have created a Solo who’s altogether too soft and sweet. “I’m not one of the good guys!” bellows Solo at one point, but that’s absolutely not true. Other characters, like Lando Calrissian (Donald

Glover, who does manage to create a bridge to Billy Dee Williams) and newbie Beckett (Woody Harrelson), are more Solo-esque than Solo himself, and while the idea is doubtless to toughen up the character in the next installment (Solo 2: Yet Another Star Wars Story), there needs to be a foundation in this film for such a development, and it’s woefully missing.

In addition to Beckett, other players new to the saga include the villainous Dryden Vos (Paul Bettany, taking a break from his Vision quest), Solo’s childhood love Qi-ra (Emilia Clarke), Beckett’s sweetheart/ sidekick Val (Thandie Newton, mostly wasted), and a pilot named Rio Durant (voiced by Jon Favreau). These are acceptable characters, but the same can’t be said of Lando’s co-pilot, a droid known as L3-37 (voiced by Phoebe Waller-Bridge).

Simply put, L3-37 is one of the worst characters to ever appear in a Star Wars film, perhaps ranking only under Jar Jar Binks, little Annie Skywalker, and Jabba the Hutt’s belching baby. L3-37 is supposed to be an activist droid who’s forever demanding equal rights, but she’s an illconceived embarrassment.

Apparently, the Kasdans and Lucas were attempting to be woke to today’s progressive issues by clumsily interjecting this character, but the truth is that she instead comes across like a conservative’s caricatured version of a feminist.

The story proper – basically, a caper plot involving the theft of valuable coaxium fuel — offers little in the way of surprises and adds nothing to the saga’s mythology.

It’s generic enough that, stripped of the scifi elements, Sandra Bullock and co. could have employed it for the upcoming Ocean’s film. Where Solo: A Star Wars Story mainly succeeds is in its ability to offer satisfying scenarios that loop back to stories we heard in the original films, from the initial meeting between Han and Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo) to the game that allowed Han to snatch the Millennium Falcon away from Lando. These sequences are infinitely amusing even if they’re ultimately unnecessary.

After all, part of the mystique of Han Solo emanated from his lack of a backstory, and filling in the gaps diminishes rather than enhances his legacy. In retrospect, Sy Snootles: A Star Wars Story or Porkins: A Star Wars Story would have been more appreciated, thus leaving the largerthan-life character of Han Solo to remain unblemished in our memory banks from a long time ago.
