Rotten to the core?

THE COURTS. The police department.

The fire department. The hospitals. The schools. The library. The jail.

When you think of what makes a society a society, those are the institutions you usually think of first.

And those core institutions in Savannah and Chatham County are also the most plagued with corruption and/or deeply entrenched issues.

It hardly seems a coincidence.

To be fair, some of them are on the mend. Others not so much. Either way, it is a dire indicator. And it’s not funny or charming anymore, if it ever really was.

It’s one thing for a rogue City Council member to draw attention to himself with outrageous behavior, as we’ve seen recently. Sorting that out is what elections are for.

It’s quite another for a basic, necessary institution to be rotten to the core. For several of them to be rotten to the core.

To cite a recent example, our Recorder’s Court is virtually non-functioning due to internecine warfare among judges and staff.

An entire local court just doesn’t work.

Chief Judge Tammy Stokes was stripped of administrative duties by another court, with two deputies also stripped of power.

Stokes was then reinstated by yet another court. Gee, I wonder how everyone will get along now?

The Recorder’s Court is so non-functioning in fact that the City of Savannah wants to start its own municipal version of the same court, at least in part due to that dysfunction.

So the chaos at Recorder’s Court will likely result in significant increased cost to taxpayers, not to mention the measurable impact on litigated cases, including people’s due process rights being violated.

Our recent problems with police corruption are well documented, and a former Metro police chief is now in federal prison because of them.

While the worst seems to be over, remember that the staining legacy of that corruption is in a sense one reason why the murder rate remains so out of control here.

When you picture cops in your mind, you often think of firefighters in tandem.

And the sudden resignation last week of well-respected, award-winning longtime Fire Marshal Craig Landolt—actually not so sudden if you know some of the backstory—is a huge blow.

More importantly, it is symptomatic of deep, longstanding issues within Savannah Fire and Emergency Services which cannot be addressed by simply hiring a warm body to take Landolt’s place.

The internal strife at Savannah Fire will have an impact not only on basic safety but on the ability of businesses to open here and to employ people in a city with a 26 percent poverty rate.

Memorial University Medical Center, the region’s premier trauma hospital, is facing all kinds of severe financial problems, some caused by strife between the board and the county, and some caused by the inevitable financial stresses of being the area’s indigent care facility.

Not even the local library system—perhaps our last nostalgic link to an innocent age gone by, and the place you least expect controversy or corruption—is immune.

When you think of libraries, you think of the delight of young minds devouring knowledge, the thrill of a well-told story, stern but helpful librarians guiding children to the greatest books ever written.

But not here, not now. The Live Oak Public Library is running on fumes after several key resignations over the last year and allegations of misuse of funds at worst, and extremely poor management at best.

I don’t want to sound too alarmist about all this. We’re still not near the level of dysfunction of say, DeKalb County, Ga., where

But either way, our major hospital is facing major trouble. The trickle-down effects could be disastrous, in very real human terms.

The Chatham County Detention Center, i.e. the jail, is still reeling from a series of incidents involving mistreatment of inmates which resulted in the termination of a host of deputies.

To be fair, there’s a new sheriff in town, as the saying goes, and these problems are being addressed in a much more forthright manner than with the previous sheriff. But as with the police department, these issues aren’t solved in a day, or a month, or a year.

As for Savannah-Chatham Public Schools, they are currently courting something close to catastrophe in their first attempt in many years at running the school bus system in-house.

From what I’ve heard from angry parents all over the district, the school system may have found the one way to run the school buses that’s even more outrageously incompetent than contracting the service to outside companies.

We are now several decades into the idea of busing schoolchildren all over Chatham County, and I doubt there’s been a single year which a reasonable person would describe as satisfactory.

We are not near the level of corruption of say, Clayton County, Ga., where the entire public school system lost accreditation, the first in the country since 1969 to do so.

The difference is one of scale. As I’ve written often before, Savannah is a smaller market than we often want to believe.

It’s a small town, and in small towns we often not only know people affected by failing institutions, we often know the people directly involved with that failure or even responsible for it, and say nothing.

We see them across the room at parties.

Oh, that’s the guy who totally screwed up so-and-so. That’s the woman who’s running so-and-so into the ground.

Oh, hi guy. Hi, lady. (Shakes hands.)

We know it, but don’t say it openly. It’s not the Savannah way.

This is both our best attribute and our worst. We stay nice and we stay distant, even though in this little place we feel the effects of corruption and failure even more personally and more keenly.

It will stay this way, or get worse, until people finally decide they’ve had enough. cs

I’ve got a birthday coming up, which is always an opportunity to obsess about the ephemerality of this one-way road trip.

This year, however, I’m swearing off my usual macabre preoccupations with life’s fleeting journey. Now that I’ve finally burned through the formidable reserves of my youthful angst, I figure I might coast on the plateau of middle age for a nice stretch before any sign of a final destination looms in the headlights.

But it looks like I picked the wrong week to stop fretting over my mortality, ‘cause right out of the gate, Miriam Center wants to talk about death.

It makes sense, really. The legendary local has never been one for social small talk, catching you up in her level gaze to tell you exactly what’s on her mind. And we are on our way to Bonaventure Cemetery, after all.

Plus, she just turned 90, a milestone not too many folks stick around to see.

“It’s a long goddamn time to be alive,” agrees Miriam amiably as she slides into my old Mercedes and slams the door.

“But I’m not afraid of what comes next.

Are you scared of dying?”

I laugh nervously and mumble something about trying not to get us killed in the afternoon traffic snarl on Victory Drive. We cruise past Bonaventure’s wrought iron gates to the back, where the tallest trees sweep the tops of the oldest tombs with their sleeves of moss. With her red lipstick, a leopard scarf and Holly Golightly sunglasses—the style trifecta of timeless Hollywood glamour—Miriam stands out like a rose in a wheat field.

“It’s fucking ridiculous the way people pretend they’re not going to die,” she says as she strides through the somber gray and green hues.

“We’re all gonna be under these stones one day. We should talk about it.”

She points out this family name and that, telling of Savannah scandals long forgotten until we arrive at the burial plot of celebrated songwriter Johnny Mercer, her good pal who passed away in 1976.

They both grew up in Savannah, but they didn’t meet until in 1963, after she was married with children and he was already an Academy Award-winning superstar.

She sings a few bars of “Tangerine,” dusts off the engraved marble bench with the palm of her hand, plops down and tells me the story.

“I sat on his lap at a party. He started singing to me one of his songs, ‘you must have been a beautiful baby…but baby, you got a fat ass!’” she finishes with a cackle.

After Johnny was introduced to Miriam’s tush, their snappy rapport deepened when he moved back to Savannah from Hollywood to care for his ailing mother.

She was still mourning the death of her 15 year-old son, Henry, from a brain tumor.

When Johnny announced he was terminally ill with the same fate, their relationship became profoundly devoted, though always platonic.

“He was just an extraordinary man. We would just talk and sing and laugh and cry,” she remembers, tracing his likeness on the bench. “He could also be a real shit when he was drunk.”

One of Miriam’s many charms is her gleeful swearing—she could definitely teach a sailor a thing or two—and I find this delightfully contagious as we kibbitz.

As we f-bomb the hell out of the early afternoon graveyard hebetude, I marvel that couched in the rounded vowels of Miriam’s elegant Savannah drawl, profanity somehow comes out sounding musical.

Musicals are what made Johnny famous, of course, and we’re here to pay homage to Mr. Moon River in advance of this week’s production of Johnny Mercer & Me!, Miriam’s original play about their huckleberry friendship. Skylark fans adored it when it was last onstage in 2012, and it’s being reprised for one night only on Thursday, September 22 at the Lucas Theatre.

As we devour glazed old-fashioneds at her kitchen table, she tells me about growing up the daughter of immigrants from Belarus and being ostracized from the sororities at Savannah High for being Jewish.

“I didn’t care,” she says, tossing her shoulders with a mischievous grin.

“I was popular with the boys, and that was all that mattered.”

She voted for FDR for his last term and is thoroughly disgusted with the current state of political affairs. “If Trump gets elected, I’m fucking moving to Italy,” she says, daintily licking her fingers.

The only thing on the counter is a bottle of gummy vitamins, and she says the secret to her vitality is to avoid “all those damn medications they’re always trying to shove down old people’s throats.”

“That, and good sex,” she says with a raised eyebrow as longtime paramour John Patterson strolls in the door.

John gave her an exquisite triangleshaped ring recently, but she hasn’t gotten around to setting a date for a wedding.

“I said I was engaged,” she giggles. “I didn’t say I was gonna get married!”

She sees Thursday’s show as a warm-up to the only item left on her bucket list: To take Johnny Mercer & Me! to a New York stage. “Other than that, I’ve done everything. I’ve already lived forever!”

I’m considering the math that Miriam is exactly twice my age when she pushes away her plate and trains her twinkling peepers on me. “So? Are you scared of death?”

Not as much as I am of not living, I tell her.

“Well then, you should have another donut, dahlin’,” she nods.

I help myself. We all end up at the same rainbow’s end anyway, and the only real wisdom is to enjoy the ride. cs

Weaving the stories she wrote with the help of late Savannah State professor Dr. Ja Janhannes, the musical features 16 Mercer tunes that illuminate a turning point in Miriam’s life. She had just hit her mid-40s, and she didn’t know yet that her best adventures were yet to come.

She started her own real estate business and was instrumental in the construction of the Civic Center. The unapologetic liberal ran for city council twice and was appointed the first female director of the MPC. She wrote a novel, Scarlett O’Hara Can Go To Hell. In the 80s, after her two remaining sons, Tony and Scott, were grown, she divorced her husband, Leo, bought a convertible and sped off to California.

There she had a spiritual awakening that led her from white-robed cults to transcendental meditation to a degree in spiritual psychology from the University of Santa Monica. Finally, her West Coast journey brought her all the way back home, though hardly the same woman.

“There are so many aspects to a person, and most of us never even scratch the surface of who we are,” she says thoughtfully as we walk back to the car. “I’m so glad I’ve had so many experiences.”

It’s no wonder that Miriam has no problem standing up to death. She’s always followed her buddy Johnny’s admonition to “Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive,” and if that doesn’t work, fill the days with wine and roses.

And carbs.

“You know what sounds good?” she says as we pull away from the cemetery. “Krispy Kreme. Let’s stop and get a box.”

Bike SAV classes are happening!

The class aims to help students avoid some of the trial-by-fire experiences others have had.

HAVING WORKED in higher education for more than two decades now, I state the following with great confidence (and you’ll probably agree from your own personal experience or from someone you know): Many people try new things in college.

Like riding a bike.

Even if they rode bikes as children or adolescents, some college students will find using a bike for transportation in a city and having to arrive at classes and other destinations on time is altogether different scenario than — say — cruising around a suburban neighborhood with your childhood pals, “Stranger Things” style.

That’s why the Savannah Bicycle Campaign is offering its “Bike SAV: Down and Dirty Savannah Cycling” classes on Friday, Sept. 23 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 24 at 9 a.m. at 1301 Lincoln St. The classes are free and all participants will receive a free bike light set. Those who take the class will learn methods for avoiding crashes, protecting against bike theft, and selecting the safest routes.

Participants will also learn basic bike maintenance tips. The goal is to familiarize students with the most effective strategies for staying safe in hopes they will share what they have learned with friends and classmates (and professors and staff, for that matter).

Caila Brown, chair of the Savannah Bicycle Campaign board of directors, is a SCAD graduate and knows what it’s like to navigate Savannah’s streets on a bike.

Author Maria Noel Groves drops ‘superpower’ plant knowledge on Sept. 22 by jessica leigh lebos

Chronic stress might be the worst enemy of well-being. Not only does it feel like a demon on your back whispering terrible things in your ear all day long, it can lead to a host of other issues, from insomnia to digestive problems to heart disease.

Approximately 75 percent of Americans report feeling stressed out on a regular basis, an unsurprisingly high response considering the myriad pressures of keeping up with bills, caring for family and processing our newsfeeds.

The other 25 percent probably might be barely conscious or filled out the survey wrong–or they may have discovered adaptogenic herbs.

Practitioners of Chinese and ayurvedic medicine have used medicinal plants for thousands of years to treat stressrelated conditions, but it wasn’t until 1947 that Soviet scientist Dr. Nikolai Lazarev defined the term “adaptogenic” to refer to any herb that raises the body’s ability to resist stress. Modern herbalists have identified more than several dozen from a variety of plant families, each with a particular set of benefits that may include increased vitality, immunity and mood. Some like ginseng and gotu kola are well-known in the West while others such as shatavari and ashwagandha are still entering the alternative health lexicon, but adaptogens as a whole are gaining traction.

“Adaptogens are becoming more and more popular because they’re generally pretty safe, and they work,” says herbalist Maria Noel Groves, who has been working with adaptogens for over 15 years in her New Hampshire practice and through her website, wintergreenbotanicals. com.

Groves is the author of the recently released Body into Balance: An Herbal

Guide to Holistic Self-Care, a beautifully illustrated reference tome that is an essential addition to the experienced herbalist’s toolbox as well as an excellent first text for those new to the topic. In the midst of a cross country book tour, she will deliver a talk on using adaptogens for stress and energy at Brighter Day Natural Foods on Thursday, Sept. 22.

“Adaptogens are great to explore even if you’re new to herbs,” assured Groves from the road last week.

“They can help people feel better right away and help transition to the deeper work of changing their diet or exercising more or whatever long term changes need to be made.”

She explains that adaptogens go to work at the root of the body’s stress response: The endocrine and nervous systems.

“That’s where our bodies produce stress hormones, and the herbs help modulate the output so we’re not overproducing or underproducing them,” she says, adding that maintaining a state of optimal health is the goal of herbal medicine rather

Panax ginseng is perhaps the most well-known stimulating adaptogen for its popularity in Chinese medicine, but overharvesting has led to illegal poaching and inferior imposter products. Groves and other ethically-minded herbalists prefer more sustainably-grown energizing herbs such as rhodiola and codonopsis. But such remedies work cumulatively and aren’t a quick fix for fatigue caused by stress.

“It’s not like having a cup of coffee,” she clarifies. “I tend to view them as a continuum.”

Groves’ booksigning and lecture is presented by Georgia’s Lowcountry Chapter of the American Herbalists Guild, a “lively group of herbal enthusiasts” who host monthly educational gatherings and share resources.

“This is the first time we’ve done an event focused on adaptogens,” says Claire Brodhead, the chapter’s vice president.

“I am thrilled that we’re able to bring this knowledge to the Savannah community because when incorporated into one’s life, adaptogenic herbs have the potential to decrease stress, improve energy, and support wellness on many different levels.”

Using herbal medicine to maintain good health is nothing new for Brodhead, the daughter of longtime community health advocates and Brighter Day proprietors Janie and Peter. With the help of her fellow “herbies,” she’s continuing the family legacy of providing education about natural ways to get a handle on widespread health issues.

“Who doesn’t deal with stress?” wonders Brodhead, who counts ashwagandha as one of her favorite adaptogens for its calming, restorative qualities.

She and Bear want folks to appreciate that the beautiful ballet of bee life isn’t simply about what it produces, but its essential role in sustaining life on earth.

Bees are responsible for pollinating the majority of food crops, and commercial almond farmers in California have taken to “renting” bee colonies from around the country to ensure maximum production.

The Kelleys’ concern for keeping hives healthy mirrors the widespread concern over colony collapses worldwide, many due to pesticides and chemical usage. Minnesota beekeepers experienced massive collapse last spring, and increased mosquito spraying due to fear of the Zika virus killed an estimated 3 million bees in South

Carolina last month.

Marybeth says she understands the public health threat of Zika, but more care needs to be taken to protect the fragile systems that govern ecology and agriculture.

“It’s not just the bees. It’s killing all the pollinators—the butterflies, the moths, all of them,” she warns.

“People need to understand that if we don’t have pollinators, we don’t have food.”

One of the ways to combat this terrifying possibility is to cultivate more bees.

Hobby-level urban beekeeping is on the rise in major cities across the U.S., and CEBA has seen an increase in membership since it became legal in 2015 across Chatham County with the adoption of the revised animal ordinance.

“We have a lot of new faces, and there’s a lot of interest,” said current CEBA president Greg Stewart, who began keeping bees in the 1980s when he lived across the street from the now defunct Savannah Science Museum. “We welcome folks to come to our meetings or one of our Saturday workshops.”

While cultivating happy bees is the objective for dedicated beekeepers, sharing their honey is one of the joys of the job.

It can also be lucrative, since demand for local honey far surpasses supply. (Kelley stressed in his talk that beekeepers must always leave enough “liquid gold” for the bees to feed on during the winter months rather than feed them sugar water.)

“We want the club to be excited about honey competition and the Welsh method,” continued Stewart, who was only allowed to talk to the judges because he didn’t have a jar in the fight.

“We’re starting simple with the Black Jar contest, though we’d like to work up to adding more categories in the future.”

Learning about how hard both the bees and their keepers worked to yield the amber elixirs lined up across the table conferred an even greater sense of responsibility on the judges. After much deliberation and discarded spoons, the panel—aided by Chef Yambor’s eight year-old son, Leo— agreed upon its top five.

Bear stepped up to rank their order, first inhaling the aroma of each one then watching how quickly it drizzled back into the jar. Finally, his Welsh-trained tastebuds chose the winner: The champion honey came from Cynthia and David Linvill, former farmers who cultivate a couple of colonies in their midtown backyard.

The couple collected their certificate with quiet pride, though Cynthia denied any credit for their winning entry.

“All we did is collect it,” she demurred with a smile.

We’ve seen the ads where pets experience joy when served an expensive brand of dog or cat food. But do they discern flavors, and given the choice, would they prefer Alpo or Cesar to dog crap or dead?—Two Larrys YES, dogs and cats do apparently taste flavors, but no, the fancy brands don’t necessarily contain more of what gets them salivating than the cheap stuff, just as beluga caviar won’t necessarily trip human taste receptors more reliably than a bag of Doritos.

Taste starts with the tongue, and the number of taste buds varies drastically among species—in some cases, pretty widely within species too. Chickens have

only about two dozen taste buds; humans tend to have somewhere between 2,000 and 10,000. A bigger number doesn’t automatically translate to a more sophisticated palate: catfish have hundreds of thousands of external buds, meaning they’re constantly tasting the river-bottom muck as they swim through it.

As for dogs, they have just 1,700 taste buds; cats make do with a paltry 470. In both, you won’t be surprised to learn, many of these buds are particularly attuned to meats, fats, and the chemicals therein. Beyond basic meatcentricity, though, we see some divergence. Sweet tastes, for instance, also make it onto dogs’ radar—their taste buds respond to a chemical called furaneol, found in various fruits. (Note that they go for chocolate, even though it’s toxic to them.) Cats, on the other hand, are alone among the mammals in having no ability to detect sweetness— which, given the personality of some cats I’ve known, seems poetically fitting.

And it makes sense: foodwise, one of the big differences between the two major pet blocs is that cats are wired to eat a lot more protein than dogs. British pet nutritionists report that cats chose a nutrient balance of 52 percent protein, 36 percent fat, and 12 percent carbohydrates, whereas dogs’ selfselected splits came out at 30 protein, 63

fat, 7 carbs.

Why the gap? The researchers suggest that until not too long ago, humans weren’t setting aside much meat for cats, who were expected to make their nutritional numbers via mousing. Dogs, conversely, are descended from pack hunters, who could land bigger prey with more body fat; then, of course, they tossed in their lot with people at least 15,000 years ago and have been eating our scraps ever since.

Now, taste and smell are overlapping senses for most animals, and you and I aren’t even in our pets’ league when it comes to detecting scent. Humans have maybe six million olfactory receptors in our noses, where cats can have up to 80 million and dogs as many as 300 million.

Dogs and cats are also among the many critters whose mouths connect to their nasal passages through something called the vomeronasal organ, or Jacobson’s organ, containing its own set of receptors to detect chemicals like pheromones. Scientists are still studying this organ’s role, but with what’s essentially a second olfactory system running alongside the first one, pets may encounter their food via a multisensory experience it’d be hard for us to even comprehend.

With that said, there’s no solid evidence that dogs and cats are biologically

predisposed to favor the flavor of a higher grade of meat, whether marketed as “organic” or “natural,” to the organs and byproducts processed into cheaper fare.

In fact, some bargain-brand dog foods may please your pet more, because they’re highly sweetened. None of this means there aren’t nutritional benefits to the pricier stuff, but I have neither the time nor the space to moderate the countless disputes over proper pet diet that have been stirred up in the two millennia since the Roman scholar Marcus Terentius Varro advocated feeding sheepdogs milksoaked bread and marrowbones.

Then again, no dog ever lifted its muzzle from the trash to consider a more upscale dining alternative offered on television.

Advertisers set their snares for the species that’s holding the credit card, and American humans are their willing prey, shelling out more than $20 billion on pet food annually. And it’s not like marketing types don’t know their psychology: according to a 2014 Cornell study, people will tend to believe that their own food tastes better the more they pay for it. Police investigate two homicides

Savannah-Chatham Metro Police investigate two separate homicides that occurred Monday evening.

Police first responded to the 900 block of Garey Avenue at approximately 5 p.m., where they found Dominque Powell, 24, outside a residence in the Tatemville neighborhood suffering from a fatal gunshot wound.

Powell was recently the victim of an armed robbery on Sept. 7 in the area.

Detectives are working to determine if the homicide is connected to the September 7th incident.

Police then responded to Meding and 61st Streets after reports of a vehicle driven by a shooting victim, later identified as Shawn March, 41, striking an unoccupied residence. March was transported to Memorial University Medical Center

with life threatening injuries and succumbed soon after. No other injuries were reported.

Detectives are working to determine where the shooting occurred and the identities of any suspects. Circumstances leading up to this shooting remain under investigation.

CNT arrests man for cocaine, ecstasy distribution

“A convicted felon is back in jail following an operation conducted by the Chatham-Savannah Counter Narcotics Team,” a CNT spokesman says.

Early yesterday afternoon, CNT, with the assistance of Georgia Pardons and Parole, conducted a search of a residence located in the 200 block of Seminole Street.

“Agents seized multiple forms of controlled substances to include cocaine, ecstasy, marijuana; and items commonly used for the distribution of controlled substances,” CNT says.

CNT also seized two firearms, one of those was reported stolen, and more than $42,000 in U.S. currency. CNT arrested 36-year-old Jabril “Taco Flacco” Whitehead of Savannah. Whitehead is being held in the Chatham County Detention Center.

Mom who allegedly tied child to crab trap found in men’s room

Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department arrested Jill Love, 32, Sep. 15, and is searching for another following an investigation into a reported child abuse incident involving a crap trap.

Officers found Love hiding in a men’s bathroom inside a grocery store on the 5700 block of Ogeechee Road after reports

of her vehicle being parked outside the business.

“The incident occurred on Sep. 5 after a father reportedly arrived at a residence to visit his 4-year-old son. The father was greeted by the mother of the child, Jill Love, 32 at her sister, Amy Sanders’ home on the 200 block of Waycross Road,” police say.

“Initially, Love refused to allow visitation but the father was able to get past Love to find the child bound using a crab trap and line as well as industrial tape placed over his mouth. The father was able to remove the child from the residence and call police. The child sustained minimal injuries from the incident and is in good physical condition,” police report.

Metro obtained arrest warrants for both Love and Sanders on Sep. 9. Sanders is charged with felony cruelty to children in the first degree and was served her warrant at the Chatham County Detention Center where she was serving time on an unrelated charge. cs All cases from recent local law enforcement incident reports. Ghost Alley Music Festival

O’Brother, Roadkill Ghost Choir, and more play inaugural rock fest by anna chandler

If you head home on Saturday night with an aching neck from headbanging and no voice from screaming your lungs out, thank the two Tims.

Ascendancy Media Group’s Timothy Burnsed and Coastal Rock Productions’ Timothy Walls have teamed up for a daylong music festival to kick off the fall. With big regional names and Savannah favorites, the first year of Ghost Alley Music Festival is a promising one.

Burnsed carved his name in the scene with Rocktoberfest, a yearly festival that specialized in bringing in alternative rock acts like Norma Jean, The Chariot, Emery, and Gideon and pairing them with local talent. In 2014, Burnsed had to move the festival to Charleston due to a lack of viable venues in Savannah. After a year off, he reached out to Coastal Rock’s Timothy Walls who, after some time away, had moved back to town and was actively booking all-ages rock shows in venues and alternative spaces. In addition to Coastal Rock’s year-round show calendar, Walls is known for A.U.R.A. Fest, a bash celebrating independent and underground rock, metal, and hardcore.

A look at Walls and Brunsed’s past bookings shows an inclination toward the heavier stuff: punk, metalcore, no-frills rock, hardcore, emo, and crossover. When the Ghost Alley lineup was released, the eclectic roster came as a bit of a surprise for showgoers.

“Sometimes, I get pigeonholed as a metal promoter,” Walls shares. “Personally, a lot of people know me from doing heavier events, but I like a spectrum of music.”

The Ghost Alley idea began with Burnsed, a former member of Me and the Trinity and bassist for Dead Planets.

In April 2016, O’Brother released Endless Light, a compelling album that manages to be atmospheric, tough as nails, and sweepingly cinematic all at once.

Vocalist Tanner Merrit explains that, though the band has created albums as a whole piece in the past, Endless Light was driven by individual tracks.

“We were definitely trying to spend more time with the individual songs in Roadkill Ghost Choir hopes that it could stand alone,” he says.

“I think it’s part of a different approach.

We concentrated on being song-oriented, and then tried to arrange them together to make them a part of a bigger picture. It was a fun process in and of itself, rather than trying to write a song specifically to fill a hole. We were stringing them together in the best way possible.”

Merrit reckons it’s been at least eight years since the band came to Savannah, Holy+Gold and the O’Brother gents are looking forward to their return.

music interview Do you consider your singer-songwriter work to be different than the loopestra?

The singer-songwriter stuff can be more complicated, form-wise, and more organized, and the loop stuff is more improvised on the fly, but it doesn’t lack form. It can kind of go anywhere—there’s no rules.

It goes places a structured thing wouldn’t go.

They both inform each other, because I’ve written a lot of songs and know how to arrange and orchestrate to the looporchestra and improvise. I can talk about making it into a song. The best way to say it is, when I improvise, I approach it like I’m writing a song, and when I write a song, I approach it like I’m improvising. I try to mix the two things up.

You’ve been using loop stations since they were created. So much technology has advanced since then. Do you like to try out the new gear or stand by old favorites?

Guitarist Teddy Kumpel honed his chops as an in-demand sideman for Joe Jackson, Nine Inch Nails, The Supremes, Feist, and more. But between sessions and gigs, Kempel was building spacey, bluessteeped songs with looping stations.

Looping devices allow for the recording and playback of riffs and samples in real time, allowing solo acts to achieve multitracked, full-band effects. Kumpel dubbed the project his “loopestra,” coaxing psychdelic, orchestral sounds through an elaborate daisy chain of vintage and modern gear. The technique is a transfixing process and a thrill to witness firsthand.

Kumpel shares the stage with Savannah’s own guitar renegade, Richard Leo Johnson, at Tybee Post Theater this weekend.

How did you develop your setup?

It started out with me wanting to have a band with a lot of guitar players. I couldn’t find a lot of guitar players—you’d think in 20 New York City there would be a lot!—but

I couldn’t find a lot of guitar players to play the same thing over and over again.

About ten years ago, I found out that people started making loopers, where you can rotate the sound around and around, and I started experimenting with that. I got two years in, learning how to use it in a musical way—it can sometimes be very static. I learned how to turn it off and on and learned how to use it as a musician in a band.

I’ve been doing it every Monday at Rockwood Music Hall in New York for six years, then I had to cut back because my schedule got really busy—in New York, there are great opportunities, because there are so many great musicians here who are able to rotate. Every town I play in, I have a different bass player and drummer with me. It keeps it fresh and all about the improvisation and making stuff up on the fly.

Who will join you for your Savannah show? Do you usually hire locals?

That’s a good question! Somebody. Usually—well, this is my second time doing this out of New York, so there’s no ‘usually,’ really. I’ve done it in Asia before, I did two

tours of mainland China, and my wife’s from Taiwan, so every time I go there, I play a bunch of concerts. My first time venturing out of New York was playing with Joe Jackson, and I got a taste for touring.

What were you influenced by early on in those ‘sideman’ days?

I’ve been playing since I was a little kid— I’m sort of non-genre specific, I would say.

What I do is what my favorite musicians do: I take all the things I like, put them in a big bowl, mix them up into a nice soup that hopefully has a good taste.

How would you explain that mix to people?

I like the blues, reggae, soul music. I like to take elements of classical music, especially the impressionistic period, like Stravinsky. I like to mix in country music. It’s very roots-oriented, but also has this otherworldly ambient classical thing going on.

You were a ‘gun-for-hire’ before the development of the loopestra. How long have you performed solo?

I’ve been doing the solo thing for a pretty long time—going on ten years. Before that, I had songs put out as a singer-songwriter, but I live in New York, and there’s a hefty rent charge here—that point of my career has been the forefront.

I follow loop pedals really closely. It’s more about content, and the looper is just the utilitarian collector of sounds. That’s not really the most important part of the performance. It’s cool when new technology comes out and you can bend the sound in a way you couldn’t, or integrate different styles of technology into the music—like, all of the sudden, you could do reverse looping six or seven years ago—that was exciting. Then everybody did it!

You took a couple of years to hone your loop abilities—it can be difficult to get it just right. Your approach seems to be a lot about economy. How do you balance that with your improvisation?

You have to be careful or you can run amuck. I have a way of turning things off in many different ways—I can edit stuff I’ve done on the fly very quickly. Sometimes, I’ll record something and not play it until the end of the song, and I’m constantly turning the loops on and off. I’ll turn the whole side of the stage off! I do a lot of things to keep it moving. Sometimes I turn off all the loops for just one second.

What can audiences expect at Tybee Post Theater?

Prolific 20-year-old Marcus King takes a unique approach to roots music with his band—and the South Carolina guitarist and songwriter is poised to strike it big.

Raised on the blues by a musician father, King played alongside his old man as a kid. In 2015, he embarked on a career of his own, infusing funk and R&B elements into his Americana sound. Charleston’s The High Divers kick off the series. The band has become a Savannah favorite due to their hooky choruses and warm stage presence—perhaps you saw them at Savannah Stopover or ElRocko Lounge? The band’s take on roots-inspired Americana-pop brings to mind the best of Wilco, Tom Petty, and Neil Young.

City Hotel frontman Aaron Zimmer opens the evening with a special solo set, and Opry alums Pretend Sweethearts stop by en route home from a West Coast tour. Inspired by their travels, spirituality, and social justice, the duo’s sound is a melting pot of traditional music with bass, pedal steel, guitar, banjo, tambourine, and South American drums.

This weekend, Relapse Records juggernauts Inter Arma swing through town with Boulder, Colorado’s Call of The Void and Atlanta’s Dropout.

Richmond-based Inter Arma’s latest release, Paradise Gallows, showcases a sound the band has refined over their heavy discography. Pummeling drums charge as guitar leads weave between each other and vocalist Mike Paparo’s wicked, bristly growl pierces.

Inter Arma doesn’t often play by the rules—their 2014 EP The Cavern was a single 45-minute song— and their unique blend of doom, psych, black metal, and classic ‘70s metal riffs will stick with you days after the show.

Relapse label mates Call of The Void bring the intensity with a stew of metallic hardcore and grind.

Jinx favorites Dropout return to join the bill.

Beach bums unite to celebrate their many creative abilities at the annual Tybee’s Got Talent! competition. This is the second year the resurrected event has been held at the Post Theater, and there will be plenty of fun entertain folks all night long.

2016’s winner, Cody Gay, will open the show. Gay, a Post Theater staff member, found success as a singer performing in Las Vegas bands like Poperazzi and Fuse. He has accompanied the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Detroit Pops Symphony Orchestra, and more. Gay’s performance kicks off a night full of singing, dancing, a Beach Chair Brigade, and even puppeteering from Mallory Pearce.

Expect a neck-and-neck, yet friendly, competition: with up to $300 in cash prizes, a panel of celebrity judges, and Renee de Rossett and Kim Trammell hosting, it’s on!

THIS WEEK, the Smithsonian Institution will open its nineteenth museum: The National Museum of African American History and Culture. Inside, artwork from one of Savannah’s most important local artists is already on display.

IT’S HARD to imagine now, with downtown Savannah bustling with tourists and activity, and the Lucas Theatre having a lively yearly event calendar.

But there was a time not so very long ago when the Lucas Theatre was slated to be yet another parking lot.

In celebrating its 95th birthday this weekend, the Lucas Theatre is putting on a throwback bash which celebrates its reopening after a lengthy restoration.

“On Dec. 1, 2000 we celebrated our grand reopening with a showing of Gone With The Wind. We chose to show the film this year in honor of that,” says Erin Muller, Managing Director of the Lucas.

The main event, however, happens before the GWTW screening, with a twohour festival of food trucks, live music from Waits & Co., live art, and raffles.

“The main part of the event is from 5-7 p.m. That’s when we’ll have the food trucks, Jose Ray doing live artwork, and a ton of raffle items,” says Muller. “The community’s been very, very generous.”

After that comes the big Gone With The Wind screening, which will likely bring a second, new crowd out to the theatre.

“That’s how the Lucas is,” says Muller.

“We attract such a wide demographic.

We’ve got the Philharmonic crowd, the Music Festival crowd, the Jaws and Jurassic Park movie weekend crowd, the free Christmas movie crowd.”

The Lucas was constructed in 1921, and technically was the first air-conditioned building in Savannah—though the earliest 30 versions of its AC involved huge fans which

blew cool air off blocks of ice.

In 1976 the Lucas was closed. Perhaps fittingly, its final film was The Exorcist.

Muller jokes that the Lucas has stayed away from showing the movie since then.

“It’s sort of a Savannah superstition,” she laughs. “We didn’t want to tempt fate by showing it again.”

The parking lot idea came and went and the Lucas eventually reopened.

“In between it seemed to serve as anything and everything under the sun. Obviously there was a period when downtown wasn’t thriving. It was ultimately saved, restored and reopened. We want to thank them for doing that,” Muller says.

“What made the difference is the community was so opposed to demolishing the building, even when the owners were

petitioning to have it demolished. Since its construction in 1921 the Lucas has been a pillar of the Savannah community.”

The gamechanger came when Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil was filmed here during a stop-and-start renovation effort for the Lucas. Kevin Spacey made a $200,000 donation to theatre preservation funding, and his starpower combined with that generosity helped lead others to jump on board to save the Lucas for good.

In December 2000, the fully-restored Lucas, newly adorned with fresh gold leaf throughout the interior and hundreds of other touches, reopened in a unique partnership between the City of Savannah and the Savannah College of Art and Design.

“It’s hard to imagine all this has happened just since 2000,” muses Muller. cs

Honoring a very Savannah success story

SAVANNAH is a place where, if you don’t live here, you probably think we’re simply a tourist trap supported by SCAD, the ports, and St. Patrick’s Day. You probably think there isn’t a pulse south of Victory, and that our food and beverage industry is packed full of chain restaurants put in place so tourists can feel more at home when they visit.

And if you haven’t visited this city over the last five years, you’d probably be right.

However, this influx of intention to create the change that we want to see in every aspect of life has flipped this tourist trap on its head as it creates its own system of culture.

Savannah is an extremely creative town, surrounded by a lot of poverty and separation. The ladder of opportunity and success can most times feel disproportioned and designed to support the old system of Savannah culture. Those still holding on to the past better look for something else to hold on to very soon.

Just like in any intellectual revolution, the great minds of the time would generally mull over their groundbreaking ideas at a coffee table, in a place other great minds would congregate and discuss things.

Fast forward to this decade in Savannah, and you can see similarities within the environments and discussions, with coffee shops dedicated to providing a space for the intellectuals of this century to formulate this century’s formula of change.

Maybe we aren’t talking about the scientific revolution, or the wave of technology in the digital revolution, but the premise remains the same, even in our small city.

I’m fortunate to live right around the corner from my favorite coffee shop, which happens to serve the best brewed coffee, roasted locally, along with the most enticing atmosphere around.

And they just so happened to have celebrated their five-year anniversary recently. continues on p. 34

I sat down with the humble and hardworking owner of Foxy Loxy Cafe, Jennifer Jenkins, to get her story and her perspective on what this cafe means to the city.

“Growing up, I always loved dreaming and creating inside coffee shops, so this was an opportunity for me to stay in a city that I loved, and providing that space for others,” Jen explains.

Born in California but growing up all over the country, Jen, just like the rest of

us, took a few different paths to end up where she is today.

After studying pre-med at Penn State for some time, she decided she no longer wanted to pour her energy into something that she didn’t have a passion for, and made the decision to follow what she loved, which was art, and more specifically printmaking.

Graduating from UW with her BA in fibers, Jen decided to continue pursuing

her education in this field, which landed her in Savannah, where she got her masters at SCAD. After teaching as an adjunct teacher in SCAD for a moment, she was presented with another crossroad.

Although she loved art and printmaking, teaching was not her element, and decided to walk away looking for an opportunity to find her niche.

“I loved Savannah, but I could not see teaching being a part of my future,” Jen

says. “I used to regret that time I felt like I wasted figuring out what I wanted, but I still pull from those stages of life to this day.”

Using her experiences, Jen formulated an idea spawned from her newly sparked interest in coffee and espresso during a semester of her master’s program in Lacoste, France.

Fascinated with the difference in quality, and how differently people consumed coffee in France, she wanted to bring back some of that culture to create a place that could provide an inviting atmosphere with some quality coffee and espresso to a town that needed it desperately.

“The goal was to have great coffee and to have people want to drink it black,” she says simply.

And so in 2011 Foxy Loxy Cafe was born, and Jen quickly learned how much it took to own and operate a small business, in even a small town like Savannah.

To make things even more challenging, she was afforded an opportunity that she couldn’t refuse which would allow her to continue to develop her brand and open another location on Broughton Street, less than a year and a half after opening her flagship cafe.

After a few challenging years, and I’m sure buckets of blood, sweat, and tears, Jen has a place that every local in Savannah frequents weekly, if not daily. Locally brewed and roasted coffee, with some of the most knowledgeable team of baristas in Savannah, you can walk into Foxy never having had an espresso, and leave not even craving milk or sugar in your coffee.

“Having trust in my employees is what allows me the time and energy to devote to other places,” Jen says. “I’ve got great leaders within my company, which is how we are able to remain consistent, and continue to grow.”

Growth is always a sign of development and maturation within a company, which is why it is amazing to see a local company take off and make the best of every opportunity given to them.

With the help of her trusted staff, coming in the near future there will be a few more locations opening under the Foxy brand: One dedicated to providing a space to serve a menu designed solely for vegans, in addition to a bakery dedicated to all the baked goods we love so much from them.

All in all I’m very happy to see someone who loves the city of Savannah believe in it enough to set up camp, and really pull all of their passions together in order to serve the city and provide a space where creative minds can sip espresso and brainstorm on the next action of change.

SNOWDEN

/// It’s no match for 2014’s Citizenfour, the Edward Snowden confessional that nabbed the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature, but let’s say this about Snowden: It’s the best movie Oliver Stone has helmed since the 20th century.

While it lacks the emotional wallop or technical prowess of Stone’s revered projects from the 1980s and ‘90s (Platoon, JFK and many more), it at least finds the controversial filmmaker shakily getting back on his feet following a post-Y2K resume that includes the disastrous likes of Alexander, W., Savages, and that Wall Street sequel with Shia LaBeouf.

Snowden, with a script by Stone and Kieran Fitzgerald (meshing together a pair of books), even uses as its starting point the meetings between the whistleblower (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), Citizenfour director Laura Poitras (Melissa Leo) and The Guardian journalists Glenn Greenwald (Zachary Quinto) and Ewen MacAskill (Tom Wilkinson), thereafter employing flashbacks as Snowden explains how he progressed from a blinders-on conservative to a man whose disgust in the government’s illegal surveillance of Americans led to him deciding to leak thousands of NSA files.

The film clearly views Snowden as a hero rather than a traitor, and it cuts no slack for anyone on either side of the political aisle, particularly the Bush administration for implementation and the Obama administration for continuation (there are also sound bites of Hillary Clinton stating that Snowden needs to be held accountable and Donald Trump suggesting that he be “executed”). And if Stone has over the years lost the ability to infuse his pictures with righteous indignity, he at least has again applied his talents to a movie that actually matters.

BRIDGET JONES’S BABY

/// It’s been 12 years since we’ve last seen Bridget Jones, and while that comes close to the 16 years since we last spotted the Blair Witch, it must be noted that the plucky Brit has certainly held up better. As with The Blair Witch Project, the delightful 2001 feature Bridget Jones’s Diary was followed by a dismal sequel (2004’s Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason) — in this case, though, there’s a Happily Ever After in the form of Bridget Jones’s Baby, which proves to be a largely satisfying entry in the franchise.

In this outing, Bridget (Renee Zellweger, again essaying the role that earned her an Oscar nomination) is older but not necessarily wiser, lamenting the fact that she’s alone on her 43rd birthday.

But things soon improve on the romantic — well, at least sexual — front, as

Bridget first hooks up with an American matchmaking guru (Patrick Dempsey) she meets at a music festival and then, a few days later, with her former lover Mark Darcy (Colin Firth), now unhappily married and on the verge of getting a divorce.

Shortly thereafter, Bridget finds herself pregnant, and she sets about attempting to figure out not only which of her two beaus is the father but also which one has captured (or, in the case of Darcy, recaptured) her heart.

Bridget Jones’s Baby takes its time hitting its stride, with early sequences proving to be awkward and forced. But as the plot complications pile up, so do the opportunities for Zellweger and an ace supporting cast (including Emma Thompson, hilariously droll as Bridget’s doctor) to strut their stuff, resulting in a film that ultimately does a fine job in delivering its developments with the right amount of comic kick.

BLAIR WITCH

// To quote B.B. King, “The thrill is gone.”

When The Blair Witch Project debuted in 1999, it created quite a sensation on a number of fronts. It brilliantly used the Internet to promote itself in unique ways.

It exposed general audiences to the “found footage” concept.

It effectively positioned itself as a true story, so much so that many viewers didn’t realize it was fiction until they actually went to see the film. And, on a minuscule budget of $60,000 (in the same summer of the $170 million dud Wild Wild West, no less), it earned a sizable $140 million stateside and an additional $110 million internationally.

As for the picture’s effectiveness, while it didn’t live up to the usual nonsensical hype of being the scariest movie ever made, it was nevertheless a clever and creepy watch.

The 2000 release Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 (aka The Sequel That Time Forgot) wasn’t enjoyed by anyone, so here we are

with a new release that’s being promoted as a direct sequel to the original. Blair Witch opens with James (James Allen McCune), the younger brother of The Blair Witch Project protagonist Heather, discovering YouTube footage which he believes shows his sister in the cabin in the woods where she disappeared 15 years earlier.

Determined to locate her, he and his friends — filmmaker Lisa (Callie Hernandez), best bud Peter (Brandon Scott), and Peter’s girlfriend Ashley (Corbin Reid) — head to the area to meet Lane (Wes Robinson) and Talia (Valorie Curry), the locals who discovered the footage buried in the woods.

The sextet are soon hoofing it through the thick forest, but it doesn’t take long for the omniscient evil presence to begin toying with them before attempting to take them out.

As expected, Blair Witch is also presented in the “found footage” format, which was fresh back in ’99 but by now has grown exceedingly stale with its overuse in cinema. In fact, “stale” pretty much describes every aspect of this film, which basically follows the same patterns as its predecessor without adding much new to the equation.

The tension between the four outsiders and their backwoods hosts is milked for some effective drama (the reaction of the black Peter to the Confederate flag hanging in Lane’s living room is perfectly played), but the trajectory of Lane’s character — pawn, puppet master or putz? — proves to be confusing and ultimately leads to more questions than answers.

There’s next to no suspense in the film, although director Adam Wingard (who, incidentally, was all of 16 when the 1999 film debuted) loves to throw in tiresome attempts at cheap scares by having a person suddenly APPEAR OUT OF NOWHERE! and get right in the face of somebody else (hasn’t anyone in scare flicks ever heard of personal space?). As for the finale, it’s largely a repeat of the climax

from the first picture, conclusively demonstrating that Wingard and scripter Simon Barrett aren’t particularly interested in expanding the myth as much as regurgitating it.

SULLY

/// The late, great Akira Kurosawa was 83 years old when he directed his final feature film. Ingmar Bergman was 85, while Sidney Lumet was 82. (By comparison, Alfred Hitchcock was only 76, a mere pup.)

It’s doubtful Clint Eastwood — or anyone, for that matter — will break the record of oldest working director set by Portugal’s Manoel de Oliveira (a whopping 103 years old when he helmed his final feature!), but at 86, the American icon has long outlived his critics and will probably end up outliving us all (although it should be noted that, at 81, Woody Allen is right behind him).

Yet even as he’s comfortably ensconced in his “Get off my lawn!” lifestyle, his work as a director largely — and thankfully — remains concise and clear-headed.

It’s unlikely there will be anyone who objects to the hagiographic treatment of Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, the US Airways pilot whose quick thinking and deft maneuvers saved the lives of all 155 people aboard Flight 1549, that fateful

NYC-to-CLT voyage that ended with Sully landing the bird (damaged by actual birds flying into the engines) in the Hudson River shortly after takeoff.

According to this picture, Sully is decent, reserved, compassionate, and a true American hero. For once, real-life facts tend to corroborate a reel-life depiction of saintliness.

Of course, most films need some semblance of villainy to provide dramatic tension, and here it comes in the form of a panel of National Transportation Safety Board investigators determined to prove that a water landing wasn’t necessary and Sully could easily have made it back to LaGuardia. (For their part, NTSB members have objected to the film’s interpretation, with one telling CBS News that “We’re not the KGB. We’re not the Gestapo.”)

Thus, while the film offers a restaging of the dramatic landing, it spends just as much time on the investigation, with Sully and co-pilot Jeff Skiles (Aaron Eckhart, funny and loose) repeatedly forced to defend their decisions.

At a scant 96 minutes — one would have to go back to 2002’s Blood Work, 12 films ago!, to find another Clint-helmed project running under two hours — Sully would on paper seem far too short to successfully

tackle such a monumental tale; instead, the opposite holds true. Despite the marquee moniker, this isn’t a biopic about the life and times of Chesley Sullenberger (the obligatory scenes of a young Sully taking to the skies are brief and unnecessary) but rather a look at this one particular incidence.

As such, Eastwood and scripter Todd Komarnicki (working from the book Highest Duty: My Search for What Really Matters, by Sullenberger and Jeffrey Zaslow) find themselves with time to kill, and thus throw in sequences involving either Sully’s wife (a wasted Laura Linney, whose principal co-star is the cell phone in her hand) or… groan… predictable dream sequences in which Sully sees his plane crashing into New York skyscrapers (thus invoking memories not of the “Miracle on the Hudson” but of 9/11).

These bits serve mainly as padding, but they’re easily forgotten whenever the film reverts back to either the flight or the investigation. In all these scenes, Hanks demonstrates his willingness to underplay (a perpetual plus when it comes to this fine actor), and he brings quiet strength and dignity to the proceedings. It’s a grounded performance in service of a man whose heroism took flight at the right moment.

// Back in 1959, when William Wyler’s mammoth production of Ben-Hur debuted, it was comedian Mort Sahl who quipped his review of the film: “Loved him, hated Hur.” Sahl was clearly in the minority — the movie proved to be a box office blockbuster and nabbed a record-setting 11 Academy Awards (including Best Picture and Best Actor for Charlton Heston) — but if the 89-year-old comic cares to repeat his crack for the 2016 version of Ben-Hur, he will likely find he has more company this time around.

This new adaptation of Lew Wallace’s 1880 novel Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ is by no means a terrible picture, but it’s a terribly mismanaged one, operating in fits and starts under the auspices of director Timur Bekmambetov.

Bekmambetov’s last stateside assignment was Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, and perhaps adding some bloodsucking vampires to wreak havoc alongside the bloodsucking Romans might have been the way to go. As it stands, there’s not much here that’s particularly noteworthy, with the best scenes crammed into the first stretch that illustrates how two mutually adoring brothers, the Jewish Judah Ben-Hur (Jack Huston) and the (adopted) Roman Messala Severus (Toby Kebbell), are eventually transformed into sworn enemies.

Along the way, Messala becomes a favorite officer of Pontius Pilate (Pilou Asbaek) while Judah has several run-ins with a soft-spoken carpenter named Jesus (Rodrigo Santoro).

Huston and Kebbell are acceptable in the central roles, and their performances might have carried even more weight had this project debuted on the small screen, where it would have been accorded a more comfortable fit.

Morgan Freeman appears as Sheik Ilderim (the role for which Hugh Griffith won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar in the ’59 version), and having this secondary character also narrate the picture seems like an odd decision until you remember that Freeman once played God and who else but God should narrate such a Biblical undertaking?

The City of Savannah’s Weave-A-Dream (WAD) Panel has issued a call for proposals for the 2016 Weave-A-Dream Cultural & Arts Projects initiative. The application must be submitted at least eight weeks prior to the start date of the project; the last date an application can be submitted is October 21, 2016.

Project funding is available up to $2,000 for specific and innovative arts, cultural, or heritage projects or presentations that have a measurable, quantifiable benefit to Savannah’s diverse populations. The Weave-A-Dream Panel seeks proposals that actively involve youth, seniors, and those who have limited access to arts based programs in Savannah. Chatham Apprentice Program Step Up Savannah’s Chatham Apprentice Program (CAP) is hosting two recruiting sessions in August for its next “E3: Educate, Empower, Employ” job-skills training program, scheduled to start on September 19 and run through October 13.
