“There are all these amazing connections throughout our campus as well as all of the history here in the city,” she continued. “It’s a place that blends the heritage with the other aspects that make a university—this one—amazing. I love talking to students and sharing about reconnecting or restrengthening relationships and partnerships and how we can all work together.”

Mikell thrives on sharing what she’s learned from others with students on campus.

“I’ll speak to classes and advise them about postgraduation and real life. We want students to ask questions and think about their future. We want them wondering and saying, ‘I think I want to…’ or ‘when I graduate, what’s it like to…’ and other questions. However, I also learn a lot from the students and I’m able to ask them questions and talk about what they’re doing now versus what they want to do.”

“Our students are from a different generation, so they have a much different lens than we do. It’s so helpful to have conversations whether it’s in a formal setting or hanging out in the student union. We want to make sure what we’re doing truly impacts the people we’re doing it for.”

Mikell insists Savannah is one of the best cities in the world because it is such a community.

“You’re always able to call somebody if you need help. It’s like a big family in a lot of ways. One person I credit—which is why I mentioned the chamber—is Erica Backus [Director of Public Relations at Visit Savannah] who I interned for in 2012. Even today, I can pick up the phone and call her when I have a question, concern, or whatever. I feel like that’s one thing that’s unique to Savannah. We all want Savannah to win.”

That’s what it’s really about, Mikell stated.

“We can all root for Savannah. People want to help each other. Not just talk about things, but actually do them. It truly is a community and we’re all in this together.”

When Mikell steps away from her busy work life, she has one place that calls to her.

“Of course, everyone loves the food here, but when I need a getaway, I love that the beach is close enough. I love the beach. Everything about it. What’s so great is we have the big buildings downtown, but you’ve also got the beach, ocean, and relaxation only 20 minutes away.”

Mikell said strong leadership is everywhere you look in town.

“It’s impressive how Savannah is becoming a huge powerhouse in terms of the Economic Development Authority and our ports. They’re the top in the country. We work hard here, but we also enjoy our time off, our weather, and the beauty of the surrounding area.”

“I’m feeling nostalgic because I’m at my anniversary at Savannah State University. It has really helped mold me into the person I am and… still becoming,” she said of her alma mater and employer. “I’m extremely grateful to be back home in a sense and working to do things for our students in our community.”

She said anyone can make the effort to lead.

“My advice is to just do the right thing for the right reason. Leadership isn’t necessarily leading a group. It can be something small which is typically how it is with me. I start with what can I do to make the biggest impact and then try to do the right thing for the right reason.”

When she’s not working hard, she loves spending time with her family, particularly her 17-year-old daughter, who loves exploring the city with her mom.

Raised across the river in Hardeeville, South Carolina, LeAndrea Mikell always felt a familiar pull toward the city of Savannah. Now, as the executive director for government and community engagement at Savannah State University (SSU), Mikell is happy to be so close to family, nature, and a town she loves.

“I grew up only about 20 minutes away from Savannah… right across the bridge,” Mikell said. “I was in Fayetteville, North Carolina, studying theater and wanted to transfer closer to home. Savannah State had a good program I was interested in I was happy to be near family.”

Mikell began putting down her professional roots in Savannah in 2013.

“While I was in my last year at SSU, I interned at the Chamber of Commerce. I worked for the Small Business Assistance Corporation. I then worked for the Savannah Morning News, went to World Trade Center Savannah, and then came back to Savannah State. This town is part of me now,” she said with a laugh.

She has been fortunate to work with many aspects of the Savannah community.

“I work with the students, residents, elected officials.

With my job, I have to make sure our elected officials and community partners companies have the information and resources they need so we can collaborate and work together on projects. I work with students so I can understand things they’re focusing on now so that as we strengthen our workforce and our region, it is a circle. We hope [students] will bring those skills back to our workforce and region. We understand at SSU what we need to do to prepare students for success.”

Savannah State University, established in 1890, is the oldest higher education institution in Savannah and is the first public historically black college or university (HBCU) in

The mural was created as part of Savannah’s Urban Tree Nursery Project and took inspiration from quilts made by former West Savannah resident Emma Freeman Williams. After Williams’ death, her property was acquired by the city and used for Savannah Fire Department training exercises. During one of these exercises, the quilts were discovered in the home’s attic and eventually used as inspiration for the mural. Georgia Southern awarded more than $500k to train literacy tutors in region

PLANTING IT FORWARD on Georgia Arbor Day with Savannah Tree Foundation

Undeterred by rainy weather, The Savannah Tree Foundation (STF) and members of the Thunderbolt community gathered to plant white fringe trees in the greenspace of Owens, George and Leonard streets for Georgia Arbor Day on Friday, Feb. 18.

Living in Savannah, organizers say it’s easy to take one of our most treasured resources for granted---Trees. Live Oaks and Magnolias adorned in Spanish moss have become a symbol of the city, and attract tourists from around the world.

The Savannah Tree Foundation’s mission is to protect the city’s urban forest through tree planting, community engagement and advocacy.

In their 40 years, the Tree Foundation has planted around 4900 trees in Chatham county alone, and will continue to plant more this month.

“This month we have had a planting every Friday and Saturday. We try to go to every municipality in Chatham county because we focus on the equity of tree planting,” said Sydney Young, the field manager of STF. Young says that planting the right tree in the right place is an essential practice that STF focuses on.

“We focus on what the area looks like, how much sunlight an area gets and whether or not there are any utilities nearby, like power lines,” said Young. “You might notice that the white fringe tree we planted was kind of close to a powerline. In this instance, it’s okay being closer to power lines because they’re smaller.”

Planting trees is an environmental investment that not only benefits us today but for future generations down the line.

Robert Seamans, Jr. the community forestry specialist for the Georgia Forestry Commission attended the event and understands the importance of planting trees for the future.

“I love to see trees going in the ground because we’re not necessarily just planting for you and me today. These trees will be around when our kids have their kids” said Seamans.

Georgia Southern University has been awarded $517,575 to train elementary education literacy tutors who will work in select schools in Chatham and Bulloch counties.

The University piloted summer tutoring last year with the support of University President Kyle Marrero and the Regional Education Collaborative (REC), made up of local higher education institutions and K-12 schools. Previously funded with CARES Act funding, the pilot provided the framework for the most recent grant, prepared by several members of the College of Education (COE).

“Last summer, we responded quickly to the need for support that our schools communicated during summer instruction, due to the learning loss experienced during COVID,” said Alisa Leckie, Ph.D., COE assistant dean for partnerships and outreach. “We saw a positive impact and response from that summer tutoring experience. We decided that as COVID continues to impact students across all levels, we would focus and refine our tutoring efforts and apply for funding to support a robust literacy tutoring support program for our partners in Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools and Bulloch County Schools.”

The grant, titled “Mitigating Pandemic Literacy Loss in K-5 Students: Utilizing a Responsive Approach with College Students as Tutors,” received funding from Gov. Brian Kemp’s second installment of the Governor’s Emergency Education Relief Fund (GEER II), and is being implemented this semester at Georgia Southern.

This summer, 60 tutors will be hired to supplement literacy instruction and oneon-one engagement within 10 elementary schools in Savannah-Chatham and Bulloch counties. Tutors will be solicited from Georgia Southern as well as members of the REC, including East Georgia State College, Ogeechee Technical College, Savannah State University and Savannah Technical College. Tutors will provide instructional assistance with phonics, vocabulary and reading comprehension.

“Learning to read by the end of the third grade impacts the life trajectories of students,” said Sally Brown, Ph.D., Georgia Southern professor of literacy education and principal investigator of the grant.

Application for student tutors will open late March.

BAR BUBBLY PLANS REOPENING ON WHITAKER ST. EAT IT AND LIKE IT

I had to admit it was a great idea. Though I still wondered how well it would be received a couple of years ago when Alton Brecker invited me over to show me around a back room he was in the middle of renovating on State Street downtown Savannah.

The room sat in a tucked away section of a space that had been divided into a number of different businesses, including a local tour company. It was anchored by a brand new tiny concept called Mint to Be Mojito. A small bar specializing in the, you guessed it, mojito.

There would be a few bites to eat, but it had appeared that this had been created as a pit stop for foot traffic to enjoy a beverage or a bite.

Alton agreed to operate the space with a friend who is also a local business owner.

They’d operate the mojito bar and he would try to figure out what to do with the rest of the space they shared. The tour company eventually left. A large majority of their space was unused.

Enter the Speakeasy.

His idea was to create a back room that offered nothing but Champagne and sparkling wines. In a small maze of a space with bathrooms and infrastructure for the business up front, there was only one way in and one way out. For customers, anyway.

They made the door a bookshelf across from the men’s and ladies rooms.

If you didn’t know, you didn’t know. It was straight out of Willie Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. Your options were a bookshelf, a bathroom, or go back the way you came.

Unless you knew which book to twist. That opened the door into the entire back area, which had been made to look tropical, but dark and hidden. Frankly, it became one of Savannah’s most curious hideaways. Very popular too.

The selection of bubbles were there to appeal to the masses. Some higher end stuff, but mostly the kind you’d grab after work to bring home. Which was more than fine. It hit

Alton was rolling. Until the day he wasn’t.

The circumstances under which Alton found himself on the outside looking in on the State Street concept are likely up for debate. In business, there are always multiple sides to a story. What we do know is that attorneys got involved and confidentiality agreements were signed. At which point Alton found himself looking for a new space to recreate his bubble room.

Mint to Be Mojito, meanwhile, has expanded and is now offering its own “Speakeasy” experience.

That whole version of the story is soooooo 2021. A tired bit because Alton believes he’s taken a difficult situation and made it better.

Bar Bubbly Savannah is on final renovation approach at 38 Whitaker Street next door to Circa 1875 and directly across the street from the very popular “Flock to the Wok” Chinese restaurant.

Location, location, location.

This space is significantly bigger than the last and is in

position for a ton more foot traffic. In my brief chat with Alton, he expressed a little concern about doing something this big, but he also knows that if it is done well, he won’t struggle for business.

The Whitaker Street corridor from Bay to State where you can find New Realm Distillery is heavily traveled on foot. There will be no shortage of people popping in and bachelorette parties pit stopping for a few more ‘woo hoos.’

The plan had been to be open for St Patrick’s Day (of course), but it is coming very soon. The renovation from a wedding cake bakery to bubble bar is almost complete. Once that happens, it all goes into the City’s hands. You know how that goes.

So it would appear we have a happy ending on the horizon.

A toast or three will soon be in order for Alton’s all new Bar Bubbly Savannah. You can follow him on Instagram for the play by play of the work being done. I do have to say, Alton shared quite a bit with me for this story, but he never once did express any ill will about his experience.

“I was disappointed, but I learned a valuable lesson.” he said.

And everyone is moving on.

“We start with a little bit of simple syrup. Then juice from green apples that we juice every day. It gives the drink a bright fresh tartness. Add some Dolan Blanc vermouth, which is a little sweeter than dry vermouth. Next, we do a London Dry gin and before we shake it, we rinse the glass with an absinthe atomizer. Finally, we do a whip shake so not too much ice, and then pour.” said Johnson.

Tart Johnson

Like many in Savannah, Tart Johnson is a transplant that’s made the city his home. Originally from Louisiana, Johnson has lived in Savannah for 10 years and is one of the people who opened Savoy Society.

In those two short years, Savoy has become one of the most popular bars in Savannah with a variety of food and drinks.

“Yeah! There are 4 of us that opened Savoy in the very beginning. We’ve been open for 2 years now and it’s been really fun,” said Tart.

You can find Tart at Savoy shaking and stirring up delicious drinks, all while having friendly conversations with customers at the bar.

The Savannah College of Art and Design’s SCAD deFINE ART 2022 will be presented Feb. 28 – March 2 with in-person and streaming events in Savannah and Atlanta.

The event will feature programs with international artists and a keynote conversation with honoree Katherina Grosse.

“SCAD deFINE ART is focused on exhibitions at the SCAD Museum of Art. Every February, we bring all new exhibitions to the museum from an international roster of artists. It’s one of the biggest moments of the year that we have at the museum,” said SCAD museum curator Ben Tollefso.

The international roster for the 13th edition of the university’s annual program brings together important voices in art and design from various countries including Canada, Cameroon, Germany, Iraq, South Korea, and the U.S. to share mind stimulating work and ideas.

“We bring everyone here for different kinds of programs, from panels to gallery talks with the artists. We do performances, we do classes as with students, all different kinds of things to celebrate these new shows and Katharina Grosse these artists that we think are making really important Photo by Larissa Hofmann contributions to contemporary art right now,” said Tellefso.

The honoree Katherina Grosse is distinguished worldwide for her expansive use of the painting medium, challenging perceptions of surfaces and ideas of spectatorship and creating rich relations between colors, shapes, and elements of architecture and landscape.

Grosse’s exhibition Chill Seeping features large-scale works on canvas created between 2006 and the present, alongside an expansive site-related textile installation.

The exhibit will be up at the SCAD Museum of Art from Feb. 28 – July 11.

“Coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the opening of the SCAD Museum of Art, the world’s finest teaching museum, this year’s SCAD deFINE ART promises special magic.

From honoree Katharina Grosse’s extraordinary paintings of incendiary color to Matthew Angelo Harrison’s sculptures that explore diasporic identities, SCAD deFINE ART 2022 both interrogates the zeitgeist and begets boundless beauty,” said SCAD president and founder Paula Wallace.

Tollefso is excited about Grosse’s exhibition as well as the three exhibitions he will be curating. One of the shows is by Norbert Bisky. Bisky is a German figurative painter living in Berlin. His work Mirror Society features chaotic explosions, ambiguous physical struggles between male figures, and nostalgic smiling young models exemplify the contradictory images in his paintings.

Hayv Kahraman is an Iraqi artist that now lives In LA. Karhraman’s work The Touch of Otherness are paintings that embody the intricacies of diasporic experience for women, Kahraman challenges the power and assimilation practices of colonizing states. Knowledgeable by her own experiences as an émigré from Iraq to Europe and her eventual settling in the U.S. Carter Flachbarth, a 2020 SCAD graduate, is exhibiting Morality Sucks. MIND AND METHODS OF AN ARTIST: Carter Flachbarth exhibit at SCAD’s deFINE ART

Carter Flachbarth, a 2020 SCAD graduate, is exhibiting “Morality Sucks” at the 2022 deFINE ART at the SCAD Museum of Art. This is his first museum exhibition, which assembles Flachbarth’s recent paintings that cast an ambiguous male figure in numerous narratives, reflecting on anxieties and tensions founded in topical global events.

“My exhibition is less about the actual events at play and more so the anxiety and tension caused by the way information is distributed, consumed, and altered. There are people who are a lot smarter than I who could probably draft you a critical argument of the mal factors of the information age, but my work functions as personal anecdotes of my experience within it,” said Flachbarth.

Flachbarth’s work is reinforced by prosaic themes exemplified in the obscure actions of the artist’s protagonist.

Originally cast as an autobiographical stand-in, this figure has come to represent broader archetypes of masculinity and their fundamental flaws, and is portrayed variously as agitated, melancholic, bored, and distracted.

“The figure in my work, to me, has always represented a place holder or a mannequin. I always wanted to paint figuratively, but I never cared to paint as if it were in the second person. I don’t want to elicit any feeling of relationship with the figure, or the figure having eyes that “looked back at you,” said Flachbarth.

plane in irregular positions.

“The way the perspective of the canvas is harshened and warped, some of the nonsensical nature within the narratives and settings, and the overall ambiguity of the work are all efforts to alter, warp, and disguise some of the visual information at hand,” said Flachbarth.

He says his primary goal for his work has been about the narrative rather than the figure in the narrative. The artist wants the figure to be approached more analytically by scanning the scene to garner information about the figure and their motives for being there.

Flachbarth says his experience at SCAD has helped him in his craft, and the relationships he formed with his professors was critical to his growth as an artist and after graduating his professors became like peers as they continued to give him great insight.

“My professors pushed me to be a better holistic artist.

Besides the professors, having access to a studio as a BFA candidate was a huge leg up, and that personal workspace was a huge part of my growth as it allowed me to put in the massive hours that creative careers can necessitate,” said Flachbarth.

On Feb. 28 Elaine Cameron-Weir and Flachbarth will join SCAD Museum of Art adjunct curator Humberto Moro and Sang Hoon Kim’s gallerist Cristina Grajales for a gallery tour, offering insight on artistic practices across sculpture, painting, and object design, as well as advanced ways to engage issues of function, representation, and materiality.

His exhibit Morality Sucks will be on display until March 27 at the SCAD Museum of Art.

“It has been a really humbling experience to say the least,” said Flachbarth about his first museum exhibition. “I remember first attending SCAD and being intimidated by all of the talent. I remember thinking I would never be able to compete, so it’s been a wild experience to have a museum show at a premiere contemporary art museum like the SCAD Museum of Art. I am excited to be able to speak about the exhibition and inspire current students.”

On Monday, Feb. 28 at 2 p.m. Elaine Cameron-Weir and Carter Flachbarth join SCAD MOA adjunct curator Humberto Moro and Sang Hoon Kim’s gallerist Cristina Grajales for a gallery tour. The inaugural Southeast Georgia Leadership Forum, organized by Morris Multimedia, will open its doors on Monday, February 28, 2022, at the Kehoe Iron Works at Trustee’s Garden for a two-day forum filled with thought-provoking content from accomplished national and regional leaders, speakers, and statewide CEOs.

Attendees will have the opportunity to connect, not only with the speakers and sponsors of the event, but with nearly 400 other participants expected to attend.

The Forum idea grew from passionate business leader discussions about how to best cultivate talent and leadership skills in our region, according to Charles Hill Morris, Jr. Regional Manager, Morris Multimedia.

“There was a group here in town talking about the concerns around opportunities to create upward mobility in our community,” he said. “The Forum is designed to bring established and emerging leaders together in an innovative environment to promote leadership development, networking, and collaborative teamwork for the betterment of our growing Coastal Georgia Region and our city.”

Morris continued, “We have a fairly high poverty rate in our area and so there was a conversation about making leadership training easy, affordable, and possible.”

Even though he’s originally from Savannah, Morris moved to Atlanta for many years and was surprised when he returned to town. “When we came back, we were really struck by how some areas of the city had not changed at all. We wanted to support folks who work at being as successful as they can be, but we wanted to give them more.”

Morris said he wanted to “start shining a light” on community leaders and bring them together.

“Savannah connects us all,” he stated. “So, this forum is an excellent opportunity. Honestly, we have an incredible group of speakers. I’m looking forward to the content they deliver, as well as meeting new people and making new friends and working together long term with a bias toward action.”

Michael Traynor, consultant to the event, said, “We came up with the concept of the need for leadership in our community.

We wanted to focus on leadership training and development with the idea that we need to bring a lot of people together. We want to start from all segments of our community to be a part of the program so we can connect and learn from each other what leadership is all about.”

“In today’s world, we live in tribes,” Traynor explained. “By having people in the same room with each other talking about the same issues that affect all of us and our community, well, this is how we grow positively together.”

“It’s always better to talk,” Morris said. “Leadership enables us to talk to each other rather than at each other so that when we have challenges in this community, we’re communicating with each other and actively trying to solve our issues together.”

To this end, the Forum has an impressive lineup of national

and local speakers.

“We have an amazing lineup of speakers, not only from our community, but national leaders,” Morris said. “We have leaders like Horst Schultz, one of the co-founders of the Ritz Carlton hotel company, who has become legendary for his service standards. He’s going to tell us about striving for excellence and how it’s very intentional. We have New York Times bestselling author, Erica Dhawan, who is an amazing collaborator in school talk about digital body language and how we can collaborate faster and further together in a digital era. We also have Michael Thurman who is the CEO of Dekalb County Georgia, but he’s also held many statewide offices in his career and has accomplished some impressive stuff in his community.”

“We also have Lieutenant Commander Steven Bolton, Garrison Commander at Hunter Army Airfield,” Morris continued. “He will talk about the type of leadership he has experienced in his life of service.”

“Another moving presentation will be Jay and Katherine Wolf,” Morris began. “Theirs is an extraordinary story of overwhelming loss and overcoming the most difficult challenges life throws at you. It’s just a very moving story. They have so much to share that is inspirational and motivating.”

“There is also Stedman Graham, educator, author, businessman, and long-time partner to Oprah Winfrey, who is coming to talk about identity leadership and how you need to know yourself to be a better leader,” Morris said. “He is an amazing leader in his own right and he will bring an interesting perspective into identity leadership.”

“The CEO of Georgia Power will talk about leading, not only for today, but for tomorrow. Kimberly BallardWashington, of Savannah State, will speak about leading with civility and having tough conversations where we have to listen to one another. We have a whole host of speakers who bring a lot of knowledge and experience to the event and will be quite beneficial to the attendees. There are just so many good speakers with stories, advice, and life lessons we all need to hear,” Morris said.

Morris’s passion for the upcoming event is evident when he discusses the two-day schedule.

“We want to challenge people’s thinking by bringing in some outside perspectives with the thought of enlightening and entertaining.

We want people to think a bit differently and have that bias toward action.”

At the end of the event, Morris hopes attendees will come away with a new perspective.

“We hope attendees will see how they can help improve the great community that we live in. We feel that’s a significant component of this get-together and part of the inspirational process. We want to break down silos and begin having people collaborate.”

“We want to do what we can—and empower others to do the same—to help move Savannah forward in a positive direction and make a difference in people’s lives,” Traynor stressed. “Everyone’s perspective will be slightly different, but at the end of the day, we want folks to see what amazing contributions they can make to their own community with the

proper leadership training.”

Morris believes leadership is learned. “Few people are natural-born leaders, but it can be taught. This forum will provide an outlet for people to challenge their own thinking and allow them to look at issues from different perspectives and to think more boldly.”

Included in the programming are many networking opportunities for attendees throughout breaks, sessions, and the awards luncheon.

“We are grateful for their monetary contribution, but we’re also grateful for the steering committee that helped shape this program, agenda, speakers, and everything surrounding it.”

At a ceremony on March 1, the Legacy Leadership awards will be presented to The Honorable Otis Johnson, former Savannah Mayor, and Cliff McCurry, Director of Community Development for Sterling Seacrest Pritchard. The Emerging Leader Award will be presented to Anna Chafin, Executive Director of Bryan County Development Authority.

The most important contribution of the sponsors, Morris said, is the scholarships.

“Scholarship winners come from all walks of life in an effort to have a more diversified representation of the Savannah community. Scholarships are given out to community members to help foster opportunities for those who might not have the means to attend right now,” he said.

“Due to the generosity of our sponsors, we’ve been able to offer over 50 scholarships to community leaders to attend the forum,” Morris stated. “We reached out to all segments of the Savannah community, such as non-profits, civic groups, charities, students, etc. You know, when we’re all together, we can do positive things for our community. Together. So, this scholarship program allows us to award these talented and excited individuals who are already leaders in their own right— or on their way to becoming one—and don’t necessarily have the financial means to attend. We want these folks at the forum, so that’s why we’re awarded over 50 scholarships.”

Ashley Rainge, 28, is one of those lucky scholarship recipients.

Ashley works for Healthy Savannah, a non-profit assisting the community with information about a healthy lifestyle.

“I’m thrilled to have gotten one of the scholarships,” Rainge said. “My biggest interest is the community grassroots organizing I can learn more about. I’m young and still starting out. I’m on the cusp of knowing how to lead, but I want to go over the edge to learn how to be a better member of the community.”

Rainge, originally from The Bronx, (New York) said the opportunities here in Savannah help make it a home.

Armand Turner, 29, originally from Indiana, has made Savannah his home with his fiancée and is another scholarship recipient. He is quite excited about the possibilities.

“I’m looking forward to networking with a lot of people,” Turner said. “I’ve been preparing all month and trying to focus on cultivating my leadership skills. It’s just another step in the right direction for me. These speakers have a ton of information to share and I’m honored to have one of the scholarships to give me the chance to soak up as much knowledge as I can. I appreciate that I was seen as someone with potential.”

Like Rainge, Turner also works at Healthy Savannah.

“Paula Kreissler [Executive Director of Healthy Savannah] is such an inspiration with all she does and I’m looking forward to taking what I’ve learned from her, mixing it with what I’ll learn at the forum, and expanding on it.”

Turner is anxious to hear Horst Schultz’s presentation, as well. “He has a ton of information to share…all of his experiences are just mind-blowing and impressive with all he’s done.”

Turner feels this forum is the perfect setting for him at this point in his career development.

2022 speaker profiles Michael L. Thurmond has served as chief executive officer of DeKalb County, one of the largest and most diverse counties in the Southeast, since January 2017. As CEO, Thurmond’s primary mission is restoring trust in county government.

During the past three years, Thurmond has been able to: • Eliminate $24.7 million budget deficit and build a $50.1 million “rainy-day” reserve fund • Create a 10-year, $1.3 billion plan for improving the wastewater treatment system that had been neglected for more than 50 years • Spend $301 million in sewer improvements • Implement programs for dealing with inaccurate water billing, blight and unemployment • Provide residential property tax relief • Pass a $1.2 billion SPLOST referendum, the first in county history • Improve public safety with fully funded pay raises, additional police and fire rescue positions and new equipment Thurmond is widely regarded as a “turnaround expert” after fundamentally transforming the culture and enhancing operations of complex organizations such as the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services, the Georgia Department of Labor and the DeKalb County School District.

Thurmond received a gubernatorial appointment to lead the state Division of Family and Children Services and directed Georgia’s historic transition from welfare to work.

In 1998, Thurmond was elected Georgia labor commissioner, where he served for three terms.

Thurmond’s latest book, Freedom: Georgia’s Antislavery Heritage, 17331865, was awarded the Georgia Historical Society’s Lilla Hawes Award. In 2019, the fortieth anniversary edition of his first book, A Story Untold: Black Men & Women in Athens (GA) History, was published.

He is married to Zola Fletcher Thurmond, and they have one daughter, Mikaya.

In his tenure, Georgia Southern has established a culture of high performance and evidence-based leadership, data-informed decisionmaking, communication transparency, and an unwavering focus on a new Strategic Plan and assessment methodology aligned with five main pillars: student success; teaching and research; inclusive excellence, operational efficiency, effectiveness and sustainability; and community engagement. While successfully navigating through a global pandemic last year, the university achieved several records, including a record freshman class in Fall 2020 and 3.4% overall headcount growth; record 4-year and 6-year graduation rates; record freshman to sophomore retention; record fundraising; and record faculty research awards.

Before arriving at Georgia Southern University, Dr. Marrero was president of the University of West Georgia (2013-2019), where the institution achieved record enrollment, graduation rates, degrees conferred, fundraising and annual economic impact. The institution won the 2015 AASCU national award for innovation and excellence, the University System of Georgia selected UWG as Institution and President of the Year, and Marrero has been acknowledged by Georgia Trend as one of the “100 Most Influential Georgians,” 2015-2018.

Prior to his appointment at West Georgia, he held positions as vice president for university advancement at the University of West Florida, Director of the School of Fine Arts and Chair of the Music Department at UWF, Associate Professor of Voice at Louisiana State University and Artistic Director of Pensacola Opera.

Dr. Marrero holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Michigan and a bachelor’s and master’s in vocal performance from Bowling Green State University. His background in the arts has taken him to 10 countries as an artistic ambassador for the United States Embassies and 40 states as a singer, stage director, and artistic director. He has been married to nationally acclaimed opera singer Dr. Jane Redding for 25 years and they are blessed with an 11-year-old daughter, Lily.

Thurmond, a sharecropper’s son, holds a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy and religion from Paine College and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of South Carolina’s School of Law. He also completed the Political Executives program at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

Dr. Kyle Marrero began his tenure as Georgia Southern University’s 14th president on April 1, 2019. As president, he leads the Eagle Nation, a Carnegie R2 institution with a special emphasis on public impact and collaboration that engages 27,000 students and 3,000 faculty and staff on three Georgia campuses in Statesboro, Savannah and Hinesville.

Stedman Graham is a business advisor, chairman and CEO of S. Graham and Associates, a management and marketing consulting firm.

They married and moved to Los Angeles to pursue careers in law and the entertainment industry.

He is the author of 12 books, including two New York Times best sellers and one Wall Street Journal bestseller.

Their son, James was born in 2007, and six months later Katherine’s life nearly ended with a catastrophic stroke. Miraculously, she survived and continues her recovery to this day, including having a miracle baby, John in 2015.

Katherine and Jay have shared their journey of steadfast hope through their books, Hope Heals and Suffer Strong, and at speaking events both live and online before millions.

2022 speaker profiles Chris Womack was named chairman, president and CEO of Georgia Power in 2021. He leads Georgia Power in serving its 2.6 million customers across the state.

The company is the largest subsidiary of Southern Company, one of the nation’s leading energy providers.

Prior to his current role, he served as executive vice president and president of external affairs for Southern Company where he led overall external positioning and branding efforts including the company’s public policy strategies and oversaw the company’s governmental and regulatory affairs, corporate communication initiatives and other external and strategic business engagements.

A native of Greenville, Alabama, Womack joined Southern Company in 1988 and has held several leadership positions within Southern Company and its subsidiaries.

He has served as executive vice president of external affairs at Georgia Power and senior vice president and senior production officer of Southern Company Generation, where he was responsible for coal, gas, and hydro generation for Georgia Power and Savannah Electric.

Womack also served as senior vice president of human resources and chief people officer at Southern Company, as well as senior vice president of public relations and corporate services at Alabama Power.

Prior to joining Southern Company, Womack worked on Capitol Hill for the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC. He served as a legislative aide for former Congressman Leon E. Panetta and as staff director for the Subcommittee on Personnel and Police for the Committee on House Administration.

Savannah State University President Kimberly Ballard-Washington was appointed by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia on May 13, 2021, after serving as the university’s interim president since July 1, 2019.

Womack is a member of the board of directors of Essential Utilities, Inc. He currently chairs the board of the East Lake Foundation, is on the national board of The First Tee and is the chair of the board for the Alliance to Save Energy. Womack has chaired the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau board and the Atlanta Sports Council. He also serves on the Georgia Ports Authority Board. He has received numerous honors, awards and recognitions.

He holds a bachelor’s degree from Western Michigan University and a master’s degree from The American University. He completed the Stanford Executive Program in 2001 and is currently pursuing his doctorate degree in political science at Clark Atlanta University.

President Ballard-Washington has practiced law in the state of Georgia for 20 years and most recently served the University System of Georgia (USG) as associate vice chancellor for Legal Affairs and as the assistant secretary to the Board of Regents (BOR). She honed her skills as an advocate for fairness and justice, serving as the BOR’s primary legal advisor on student, faculty, and employment issues.

This role also gave her the opportunity to work directly with and provide advice and counsel to the USG university presidents and their leadership teams. She was also tasked with leading USG’s efforts in (the Education Amendments of 1972’s) Title IX administration.

President Ballard-Washington previously served as an associate director for legal affairs at the University of Georgia and as assistant to the president for Legal Affairs and director of Equal Opportunity Programs at Valdosta State University. In 2013, then-Chancellor Hank Huckaby asked then-associate Vice Chancellor BallardWashington to serve as interim president at Fort Valley State University, followed by an opportunity to lead Albany State University on an interim basis. To date, President Ballard-Washington is the only person to have led all three of Georgia’s public Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

Earlier in her career, she was named to Georgia Trend Magazine’s “Top 40 under 40” list. In 2019, President Ballard-Washington completed the American Association of State Colleges and Universities’ (AASCU) Millennium Leadership Institute. She is currently participating in AASCU’s New Presidents Academy.

Born and raised in Montezuma, Georgia, President Ballard-Washington received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Georgia. She earned her Juris Doctorate at Texas Southern University’s Thurgood Marshall School of Law, where she was a leader in the Black Law Students Association and the Student Bar Association.

President Ballard-Washington’s career has been balanced by her role as wife to her husband, Craig, and as the mother to two incredible daughters, Kristen and Kerri.

The Savannah College of Art and Design issued a $159 million bond late last year to fund the construction of three new residential buildings in Savannah and Atlanta, according to public documents related to the tax-exempt bond issuance.

The construction is part of a larger plan to house 50% of SCAD students on-campus by 2025, according to bond documents. Most freshman will be required to live on-campus beginning Fall 2022. Currently, the university enrolls 15,704 students across three campuses and an online platform.

“In 2019, SCAD conducted research which found students who live on campus have a higher GPA, are more likely to graduate, and miss fewer classes. This research led to the formulation of the Capital Plan to support student success by the development of additional campus housing,” according to a statement provided by SCAD VP of Operations John Buckovich. “The SCAD Board of Trustees approved a holistic capital plan that addressed the need for additional residence hall beds, aff ordability, and investments in campus safety.”

And the bond issuance comes on the heels of the university’s latest fi nancial statements, which revealed SCAD has more than $1 billion in net assets, an 18.4% increase from 2020, according to the public record. The same documents revealed the university owns $789 million in book property assets, which is a more conservative

The governor’s race will likely be the loudest in Georgia this year, with two of the state’s most prominent Republicans, Gov. Brian Kemp and former Sen. David Perdue, facing off for the GOP nomination.

One of them will take on Georgia’s most prominent Democrat, Stacey Abrams. If it’s Kemp, it will be a rematch of the 2018 gubernatorial election.

Abrams is currently running unopposed for the Democratic nomination, but on the GOP side, the primary will resolve one of the ideological holdovers from the 2020 election: Kemp’s refusal to take steps to overturn Georgia’s election results, despite pressure from former President Donald Trump to do so.

Trustees’ Garden Trustees’ Garden has always been an integral part of the history of Savannah. Chartered by the British crown in 1732, Trustees’ Garden served as a testing ground to determine what crops would flourish in this new land. Given its elevation and proximity to the river, the site was a natural choice for military defense in times of war and peace.

Following an influx of Irish immigration, this campus housed the nation’s largest ironworks. William Kehoe, acquired Phoenix Architectural Works and, upon renaming it after himself in 1883, expanded it to include a marine-engineering shop and facilities to produce structural steel, brass fittings, and a range of iron goods: sugar mills and boilers, manhole covers, and more.

Additional uses for this site include the Savannah Gas Light Company, which converted coal to gas and housed a demo kitchen known as the Wonderflame Room.

In 2003 Charles H. Morris purchased the site and began the restoration process with

a vision of creating a series of multi-use event spaces focused on the arts, culture, and wellness while giving reverence to the site and structures’ history.

Kehoe Iron Works According to the February 1916 issue of Iron Tradesman, Kehoe’s Iron Works stretched from this spot to the river, constituting “the largest and best equipped plant south of Newport News [Virginia].”

Its proprietor, William Kehoe, having acquired the Works from the Phoenix’ Monahan family, and upon naming it after himself in 1883, had expanded it significantly.

Kehoe’s success allowed him to cultivate other business interests—for example, he co-founded the Chatham Savings and Loan Company. One obituary underscored his being “an originator of the Tybee Railroad,” holding “script No. 1 in recognition of his pioneering work.” It also noted his charitable service to Savannah and support of Irish causes.

Kehoe was an Irish immigrant. Evidence points to his arriving in Savannah at the age of nine with his mother, father, and siblings, on February 24, 1852, aboard the barque Brothers ship: a direct voyage from

his home county town, Wexford Ireland.

Forward motion certainly characterized Kehoe, one of Savannah’s “most widely known and beloved citizens.”

Legacy Leadership Awards dR. Otis Johnson Dr. Otis Johnson was born and raised in Savannah. After graduating from Alfred E. Beach High School, Johnson earned his A.A. degree in liberal arts from Armstrong State University, his B.A. degree in history from the University of Georgia, his M.S.W. degree in social work from Clark Atlanta University, and his Ph.D. in social welfare from Brandeis University in 1980.

Johnson worked for the Economic Opportunity Authority and the City of Savannah Model Cities Program before joining the faculty at Savannah State University. John Wyatt, a self taught artist from Savannah experienced a life changing moment upon a terrible car crash involving a fire truck in 2017 during hurricane Irma and suffered untreated head injuries at the time. Along with the unfortunate event, he became homeless for a period of 19 months. During such time he attempted a number of jobs including a pet delivery service operating out of overdue rental cars causing more confusion amongst his relationship with such companies. Once he was able to obtain a proper residence, the blank walls were just too stark. The therapeutic drawings he was working on turned into paintings. The paintings are titled according to those that were supportive and inspirational during his recovery. Goodwill and Starlandia were a blessing for John, giving him the extra income needed to complete his vision.

For local self-taught artist John Wyatt, drawing has been a way for him to cope with the stresses and adversities of life. After experiencing homelessness for 19 months, he moved into a new permanent residence in 2019.

Feeling like the walls of his new home were too empty, he decided to hang up a painting he made himself.

To make extra money Wyatt sold furniture online. As fate would have it, someone looking to buy a piece of furniture saw the painting and bought it for a couple of hundred dollars.

Since that moment, Wyatt has hit the ground running with his art, and has never looked back.

“I was like, Oh! This is validating and makes me think I can do this, and so I just started painting and never stopped,” said Wyatt. “Most of the paintings I have, I’ve been working on for the past 3 years because I don’t really stop painting. It’s like if I don’t get rid of them I keep going, and add more and more layers.”

Wyatt doesn’t believe that there is a specific way his art should be viewed or interpreted.

He says that even the orientation of his paintings can vary from viewer to viewer.

“If I could, I would put them on a wall with something that would allow them to spin or twist. I think you should be able to decide the orientation for yourself,” Wyatt says with excitement. “When I paint, the canvas is manipulated in every way. So you shouldn’t think that there’s a certain way they need to be displayed.”

His paintings at Gallery Espresso are named after people and places that have made a positive impact on his life, and will be on display until Fri., Feb. 25.

LET’S JUMP! Concert mixes tap dancing/New Orleans music

Just a week ahead of Madi Gras, the sounds of New Orleans are coming to Savannah.

The New Orleans band “The Jump Hounds” and Savannah-based tap dance company Tap That Brass is producing ‘Let’s Jump!’, a concert that is bringing an evening of tap dance and New Orleans music to Savannah on Feb. 24 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Ben Tucker Theater at the Savannah Cultural Arts Center.

“Tap That Brass is excited to partner with our friends The Jump Hounds for Let’s Jump!,” said Nora Clark, President and Founder of Tap That Brass. “This concert will be held the week before Mardi Gras, and what better way to celebrate than with a night of dancing to incredible New Orleans jump swing.”

This show started as an idea before Covid. Clark had moved back to Savannah from New Orleans and she had a group of students here that was interested in tap dancing.

“I wanted to bring something to the city that I was seeing a lot of in New Orleans that really doesn’t exist here. This is a very

new concept for the city of Savannah. In New Orleans, you see tap dancers fairly regularly,” said Clark.

In 2014, Nora Clark met Adam Arredondo at a gig in New Orleans where he was playing trumpet. She introduced herself as a tap dancer and was invited to improvise with the band. That introduction led them to their co-creation of Tap That Brass in 2015.

“Tap That Brass” is an educational non-profit dedicated to promoting and preserving the art of tap dance.

Along with providing training and rehearsals free of charge, Tap That Brass teaches dancers music theory and how to communicate with musicians and accompany a band as a percussionist.

They say this fundraiser concert will help them continue to offer training services to students.

Understanding that tap dance is a unique audio-visual performance art form, Tap That Brass was formed to embrace and explore tap and live music collaboration.

“They’re both important, but the focus is different. We’re approaching tap dance for a show like this from an educational music place and also recognizing the art form as

something that’s visual as well as audible.

That’s what’s so cool about tab dance,” said Clark.

Building off of that concept of tap dancing being an audio and visual performance, Clark and Arredondo thought it would be a great idea to do a collaborative show with her dancers in Savannah and Arredondo’s new band The Jump Hounds.

The Jump Hounds is a New Orleans– based sextet that focusses on “jump,” the jazz-based rhythm and blues that connected the gap between swing and rock & roll. The band plays a mix of Jump Era classics and original compositions to keep this frequently overlooked style of music alive.

“When Arredondo and I formed Tap That Brass we were really interested in composition at first. He was the brass and we would remove the drummer and put in tap dancers as the percussionist. That is very hard to do,” said Clark.

Through a series of trial and error and creative exploration Clark discovered a way to create the percussion sound that she

wanted using tap.

“On a drum kit, you have symbols and you have tone in a bass and you have all of these tools to create the melody within the percussion but as tap dancers, we have two sounds, we have tone, but there’s much less that really is equal to a drum kit. It took a lot of work on my part to make songs sound full,” said Clark.

Tap That Brass seeks to continue to expand the full potential of percussive dance by blending the musical role of the tap dancer with other musicians. In addition to learning the art form Clark wants her students and other people to know the origin and history of tap dance itself.

“Tap dance is an American art form that was born when enslaved people in the American colonies had to use foot and body percussion after their drums were taken away. It is important for people to understand where that art form really came from and why it is important in our history as a way to survive and communicate,” said Clark.

AJ Grey grew up in the era of 90’s grunge. She vividly recalls listening to bands like Greenday, Alice in Chains and Nirvana while sitting in the back of her older sister’s green, Honda Civic in Wilmington, NC. “Immediately, I’m transported,” explains Grey.

Now as a 30-something adult living in Savannah, Grey uses her dynamic and powerful vocals to not just transport her audience to the age of grunge—which Grey contends is alive and well—but to transcend the local, music scene as the frontwoman of the newly formed, all female rock band, The Maxines.

The Maxines, made up of Grey on vocals, Veronica GarciaMelendez (also of Bero Bero) on bass, and twins Maddie and Coco Oke on drums and guitar, is quickly making their mark with their sound that is what you may not expect from a quintette of women.

“We like to play on masculine and feminine sound,” Grey explains. “We don’t want to sound too feminine. We want to have strength in our sound with strong guitar riffs and lyrics that can lead into what’s going on in the world today.”

On the heels of a show at El Rocko Lounge downtown, The Maxines are still figuring out what they want their “sound” precisely to be, but so far, with two original songs and a plethora of 90’s covers in their back pockets, they are falling somewhere between a unique mix of grunge, metal and psych/experimental rock.

While their sound is intentionally eclectic, Grey has also dedicated a lot of time to her on-stage persona.

“Being a frontwoman of a band that doesn’t play an instrument in very tricky because I don’t have a prop to use,” explains Grey.

“I have a microphone, but I don’t have a guitar. I have to show up even more and have a presence about me that makes people lock into me.”

In the outset of The Maxines, Grey did a lot of research of bands that are fronted by vocalists who don’t play an instrument like Garbage, the Cranberries and Gwen Stefani. This developed an intention towards showmanship that focuses strongly on how she stands, her outfit and having an overall presence on stage.

“I’m someone who likes to put on a show,” said Grey. “I won’t just stand in front of a microphone and sing. I’ll walk off stage and into the crowd.”

A move that truly demonstrates Grey’s desire to connect with her audience. She uses this same aggression in her writing. While the Maxines have so far collectively written their own music, Grey has proven to be the stand-out lyricist as heard in songs “Skin Tight” and “Slumber.”

In “Skin Tight”, Grey explains how the lyrics speak to multiple groups of people in the world.

“It has to do with forced conformity and having someone else tell you who to be,” said Grey. “I want for anyone to listen to that song and relate to the lyrics.”

In “Slumber,” Grey touches on the relatability of crushing on someone so hard, that when you finally get them to yourself, you can just sleep well at night. While drawn from personal experience, it’s a sentiment many can connect to.

According to Grey, The Maxines are currently preparing to record “Skin Tight” soon and are also continuing to write their own, original music.

You can catch The Maxines at their next show on Sunday, March 6 at the Sentient Bean. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m. They’ll be sharing the stage with Klept and touring band, Aslylum 213. They’ll also be returning to El Rocko on May 7 with the Colorado-based band returning to Savannah, Beneath Trees.

The Tybee Island Marine Science Center honored its donors on Feb. 19 at its inaugural donor gala, “A Shiver of Sharks.”

The event was held at the center’s new facility located on the north end of Tybee Island. The new facility opened in April, 2021, as a beach-based nature center with nationally-recognized environmental education programming and exhibits that are supported through fee-based programs, individual and corporate sponsorships Donors, project architects, City of Tybee Island officials and creators of the donor wall, Forsyth Metal Works, were recognized for their contributions to the project at the gala..
