Tor the first time in my long career in Magic — and though I have written over a quarter million words in my series of 27 Textbooks and Brochures for the magical profession am I moved to say something unkindly of a man in that calling.

The most flagrant, deliberate and according to the "compilers" own admission in his Introduction, intentional example of wholesale plagiarism I have ever seen in Magic has appeared recently on Slate Secrets, Material has been "lifted" almost bodily from various sources, particularly from my own slate writing inventions.

The "compiler" (I could use an uglier and shorter name) is under no delusions as to how his "manuscript" should be regarded by all self-respecting members of the magical profession. In fact he states: "The appearance of this work will be SEVERELY CENSORED and DAMNED" by a large number of dealers and the "Fraternity," That is plain enough. Respectable and honest dealers and the fraternity and including both S.AOM. and I.B.M. made up of the fraternity. Members of both orders please NOTE and REMEMBER this person's opinion of you for the future.

"It will kill most of the future sales of certain "Tricks now sold at $5.00 an* $10.00 each."

A commendable ambition indeedI

A fine FRATERNAL IDEAL!

IF MAGICIANS CAN NO LONGER PUT OUT THEIR INVENTIONS TO FELLOW MEMBERS OF THE FRATERNITY BECAUSE THEIR CREATIONS ARE STOLEN BY UNPRINCIPLED COPYISTS AND PUT OUT IN SUCH MANUSCRIPTS WITH THE INTENTION OF KILLING OFF THE SALES BEFORE THE INVENTOR HAS AN APPORTUNITY TO EVEN SECURE A RETURN OF HIS ORIGINAL INVESTMENT IN ADVERTISING ILLUSTRATIONS ETC. — THERE WILL SOON BE NO MORE NEW THINGS PUT OUT IN MAGIC-!

After the inventor is robbed of his material and the profits of his inventions, he is not even to be given CREDIT (the cheapest thing one can give) for his invention!

MAGICAL DEALERS come in for their share as; "Dealers who chisel a more or less precarious livelihood from the sale of magical paraphenalia." Our leading magical dealers will no doubt note — AND REMEMBER this definition!

You magicians who would like to see magical dealers remain in x^xistence so that you will continue to have a convenient place to "meet the boys" and exchange ideas who want the dealer to invest his money in a stock of the NEW things in Magic so that you may see them at his place each month take note.

MAGICAL REVIEWERS are spoken of as "the elite who dot and smear the escutcheon of Magic". And speaking of his own manuscript he says "these cheaply prepared Manuscripts are ever a target for the 'Magic Critic* and 'Reviewer*."

So this estimable "gentleman" the 'compiler' has no doubts as to publication is going to fare at the hands of the two OFFICIAL ORGANS.

And how could Official Organs of orders like the S.A.M. and I.B.M. do otherwise than to condemn a "compiler" who states he has "made no attempt to give credit where credit is due" and states he expects to "kill the sales" of goods advertised by dealers whose advertising and subscriptions from their best customers have made possible the existence of these same organs?

The appeal is apparently made to a dishonest element to get purloined* secrets at a cut rate and thereby defraud the inventors. But as in the cas© of the familiar * grafter* who hies his victim to a secluded doorway to show some supposedly 'stolen* goods at low prices, the one who conspires to cheat, is very largely cheated himself.

For most of the matter was «lifted* from recent columns of "The Sphinx", from a book by Robinson a decade old, (no copyright credit given) as well as from Nixon*s Manuscript. And the most featured part was taken from my directions for Chemical Slate work (advertised on page 362, Nov. Sphinx for 1929 for Zhf) which CONSISTED OF 11 PAGES. And this "compiler11 has only 11 PAGES OF TRICKS IN HIS ENTIRE "MANUSCRIPT".

So apparently spired to cheat the "purloined" secrets of material already any illustrations. welli

For those who coninventors of their returns by buying a cheap manuscript of at a cut price found that they received mainly a collection published or given away, with misleading formulae and data minus The compiler has apparently "put one over" on his readers as

And after all why should he not? If the plagiarist does not mind robbing the INVENTOR of his property and credit WHY SHOULD HE MIND CHEATING A PURCHASER WHO IS SO UNPRINCIPLED AS TO CONSPIRE WITH HIM TO DEFRAUD THE INVENTOR? To correct the injury done, not to myself so much as to the inventors of other methods who were not credited, and to you who may have "been defrauded by being sold the INCOMPLETE and INCORRECT instructions for mine and other slate methods I have put out this FULL and COMPLETE explanation of Slate Writing Methods, WITH ILLUSTRATIONS for the manipulative methods.

And to correct the injustice done by the former "manuscript", I give DUE CREDIT to the inventors or publications where-ever known.

In conclusion I want to say that I think there is sufficient HONOR and coherence among magicians for the notorious "compiler" to find that it is not only his MANUSCRIPT which as he so frankly admitted would "he "Severely censured and damned" by the fraternity — but that the "compiler" himself would also be most heartily "Severely censored and damned" by the same fraternity. And along with that any future "compiled manuscript" which he nay try to put out no matter what aliases he may attempt to conceal its authorship under.

We can only make magic better for us to work in by suppressing the injurious and destructive elements in it. Back the spirit of Fair Play encourage the invention of Improvements and New Effects by protecting the rights of inventors and authors who give us the products of their labor for the love of it and are satisfied if they can receive even partial reimbursement for the cost of their long experiments and the cost of marketing the item.
