elcome to the February Issue of Conisbrough In Focus.

Happy New Year to everyone! A little late in the day to be saying it I know, but it is the first opportunity I’ve had to say it to readers. I hope you all enjoyed your Christmas festivities as well. It all seems like a distant memory now as we get back onto the treadmill of daily routine. Talking of treadmills, how are those new year resolutions going? Good luck with them and keep going!

This month in the magazine (p10) we have the great news that the Tour de Yorkshire will be passing through Conisbrough on 30th April. Already a local working party has been set up to steer activities in the village on the day. There will be a number of open meetings held, the first of which is this month, to which anyone who is interested in getting involved can attend. More information on the Tour de Yorkshire, including the route through Conisbrough and the days events will be published in the March issue.

This month you can also read the last of the winners in the Conisbrough Community Library Short Story Competition, this time in the Open 17+ category. It’s been a pleasure reading the winning entries and I look forward to the Short Story Competition 2016!

Community News Non-uniform day at De Warenne Academy raises £893

Chelsea Rose Cartwright was a student at De Warenne Academy from 2006 to 2014. Chelsea suffered from leukaemia but fought it bravely. After beating it once the disease returned and Chelsea tragically passed away at the age of just 20 on 15 October 2015.

Students wished to remember Chelsea and on Friday 18 December 2015 the academy held a non-uniform day with a focus on Chelsea's favourite colour, purple.

The response from students and staff was fantastic and £893 was raised on that day. The money will be given to the Rochelle Baxter Fund at Weston Park Hospital in Sheffield, a charity chosen by Chelsea's family. The trust helps to make the lives of teenage cancer sufferers as enjoyable and comfortable as possible.

25th Doncaster (Conisbrough) Scout Group.

100 Years of Cub Scouting 2016 marks the 100th anniversary of the formation of Wolf Cubs by Baden Powell, the first Chief Scout.

Following on from the success of the scout section formed in 1907, younger boys clambered to join the scouts, so he came up with the idea of ‘Wolf Cubs’ based on Rudyard Kipling’s Jungle Book. Boys from the age of 8 were allowed to join and move up to scouts when they reached the age of 10.5 years. In 1967 Wolf Cubs became known as Cub Scouts and in 1990 girls were allowed to become Cub Scouts for the first time.

So 2016 will see our Cub Scouts taking part in several special events to commemorate the Anniversary including a ‘Thanks Day’ at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park, a four day camp at Hesley Wood called ‘Pack Mania’ and a Big Party to end the year. The cubs will also being taking part in a variety of special activities here in Conisbrough.

Meanwhile the Beaver Scouts will also be having a special week-end camp entitled ‘Mission Beaver’ with lots of adventurous activities at the Kingswood Adventure Centre here in Conisbrough.

And the Scouts will be attending a ‘Freezer Camp at Hesley Wood in February and other outdoor activities throughout the year.

In December we lost two of our leadership team so we are looking for new adult leaders who want to have fun and adventure with outdoor activities. If you are interested then please contact David Holland on 862460.

Crags Clean-Up Doncaster Council along Entour will be carrying out a clean-up of the Crags on Friday 4th March and would like to invite residents to come and join in.

Protective clothing and refreshments will be provided. Why not join them at 10am at the Balby Street entrance to the Crags, and make a real difference to the area? The session will go on until 3 pm so pop down when you can.

A Message from St Peter’s Church Wot? No television?

First of all let me say a big thank you to everyone who came to celebrate Christmas with us. It was truly wonderful to see so many of you joining us in the greatest birthday celebration the world has ever known. We celebrate birthdays of people who are alive; and Jesus is no exception. In a month time we will be inviting you again, this time to celebrate Easter with us. At Easter we remember the sadness of Jesus’ death as he gave up his life for us. But we also celebrate the most wonderful news of all and that is that three days after his death he was raised to new life and is still alive today, offering each and every one of us the gift of ‘forever’ life in him. It is a free gift to us, but it came at a great expense to God. Which brings us to the Christian tradition of Lent and the practice of some to make particular sacrifices. Not to gain God’s love - his love for us couldn’t be any greater than it already is - but to refocus our lives on the things that really matter: Healthy eating and exercise over chocolate, excessive drinking and sloth. Time to focus on building relationships over time being taken up watching television, keeping up with facebook or upgrading our favourite gadgets. For many years we have given up television for Lent. We felt that the pressure to

Christmas Shoebox Appeal Many thanks to you all for taking part in Operation Christmas Child shoebox appeal. A total of 5,576 gift filled boxes left Doncaster on 30th November for Ukraine where they will be given to children in need.

1076 boxes came from schools and churches in Goole and Retford and the other 4500 from the Doncaster

Lent Lunches at Clifton Church Yes, now is that time of the year to be looking ahead to Lent, a time for thought and reflection. It is also at this time that we hold our Lent Lunches where you can enjoy delicious home made soup, puddings and a cup of tea at our Church in Clifton.

The lunches start at 12 o’clock on the 16th and 23rd of February and the 1st, 8th and 15th of March 2016.

Cost is £4.50 and the proceeds are to be shared between Doncaster Royal Infirmary [DRI] and Shiloh drop-in centre in Rotherham.

DRI are raising £1million to bring radiotherapy treatment to Doncaster rather than making the journey to Sheffield Weston Park.

Shiloh offers warmth to the homeless, marginalised and socially excluded and guidance to a meaningful self-reliant life regardless of beliefs.

Come, join in and enjoy the fellowship at Clifton Church and support these worthwhile causes.

Patient call system in the waiting room - we have listened to your comments and complaints and are upgrading the patient touch screen and displays in the waiting room. The system is very old and was taken from the old building into portacabins then refitted into this new building, when it should have really been replaced at that time. At the moment the wall displays are showing random irrelevant messages, the sound system is very poor and the touch screen is often out of order. The new system has larger screens, is clear and can be personalised to display messages about the services we run from the practice.

Conisbrough Group Practice I would like to thank everyone who bought raffle tickets or bought a cup of tea or coffee in the health centre on the run up to Christmas. The raffle raised £180 and our tea and coffee mornings for the 2 weeks before Christmas raised just under £120 so we raised a fantastic £400 for our charities. As usual we chose local charities that will help patients in the area. This year we will split the funds between the Aurora Centre who offer a package of free beauty and complementary therapies to those who have had a diagnosis of cancer (men and women); and the fundraising to build a £1million radiotherapy treatment suite at Doncaster Royal Infirmary so patients can receive radiotherapy treatment in Doncaster rather than make the long journey to Sheffield.

We are still waiting for permission from our landlords to fit the defibrillators we bought from fundraising in late summer to an external wall here and in Denaby.

The landlords initial response to my request was that we should consider fitting them indoors because they may get vandalised or damaged outside. My reply to that was, there are already 7 machines in the village but all kept in buildings that are locked at sometime during the day, and all of them at night when most heart attacks happen. The ones at the moment in

Tour de Yorkshire Conisbrough and Denaby community groups, schools, businesses and residents are keen to join in the preparations for the Tour de Yorkshire event on 30th April when the men’s and women’s race will do a loop through Conisbrough on their way from Otley to Doncaster‘s finishing line. The event will be a great opportunity for all of us to show Conisbrough in its best light and prove to people what a great destination it is. Community representatives were at the Welcome to Yorkshire Roadshows to find out more about the event and will be working hard to help make it a day to remember.

With an estimated 20,000 people along the route in Conisbrough alone, there is plenty of scope to show Conisbrough and Denaby communities at their best.

The Tour de Yorkshire coverage is broadcast to 177 countries around the world and they are expecting 1.5 million spectators who will be lining the whole of the route – so no pressure then! The whole of the route through Conisbrough will be closed to traffic from when the first race enters the village until the last cyclist from the second race exits it so we have a four hour slot to entertain visitors between the two races and then we can carry on the entertainment into the evening.

Councillor Nigel Ball instigated proceedings at an open meeting at St Peter’s community rooms on the 12th January to find out what we could achieve in the time we have before the event. Nigel chaired the meeting alongside Sandra Holland, local Councillor; representatives of local community groups and Darren Simpson, DMBC and Communities lead for Tour de Yorkshire, Doncaster. This group with Dean Wiffen (DMBC and Schools lead for Tour de Yorkshire, Doncaster) will work as a team to liaise with the Conisbrough and Denaby communities to help coordinate activities running up to the event and on the day.

Around 60 people squeezed into the community rooms to add their views and ideas for the Tour event and a working party of six was formed to steer the whole event. A meeting for this group and anyone else who would like to be directly involved with the Tour de Yorkshire event but missed the first meeting will be held on Wednesday February 9th at 6 pm at The Eagle and Child There will be more open meetings in which anyone wanting to be a part of the Tour de Yorkshire Stage

Two event will be very welcome. Whether you would like to help steward the event; make bunting or posters; donate or paint old bikes; sponsor a part of the event- or anything else you can think of- please pop along and join in the fun. We need creative people with a sense of fun to come up with unique ways of catching the attention of the world and put Conisbrough firmly on the tourist map! The first of these meetings will be on Tuesday 23rd February at the St Peter’s community rooms at 6 pm

Ivanhoe Centre News Conisbrough Community Association Ltd are once again proud to announce that Unite The Union Brass Band, the 2015 Butlins Mineworkers & Yorkshire Area 1st Section Champions, will once again be performing at The Ivanhoe Centre on Sunday 5th June at 2.30pm.

Conisbrough Forward Conisbrough Christmas Market We had a very hectic start to the day with reports of Storm Desmond causing havoc in the region.

Stallholders started to set up and had their stock flying down the street due to the sudden gusts outside Sainsbury’s. We ended up lifting the stalls (no mean feat!) further down the road where it was not quite so windy and managed to tuck stalls into any available nook and cranny! This made the street look a bit emptier than previous years which a few people commented on. Many thanks to Steve Pugh; Andy Farmery and Sean Gibbons who supplied vehicles and workers to set up and dismantle the market stalls and of course the Council workers and other volunteers who helped too. All helpers were rewarded with free food and drinks from Molly’s at Chimes.

Despite the high winds almost everyone was keen to go ahead - after all it is the culmination of a lot of hard work for many local crafters and community groups. One lady with delicate hand painted glassware wisely decided not to stay, but Roger Broadbelt who comes every year with his collection of Conisbrough Christmas cards took it all in his stride and managed not to lose even one card due to a liberal use of double sided sticky tape!

Knowing that there would be strong winds I was going to cancel the gazebos which we have every year for local groups in St Peter’s car park- but there was an empty shop on Church Street which I realised would make a great indoor alternative for people. A quick phone call to the owner Brian Merritt and we had a Pop-up Shop sorted, which housed several local groups’ stalls and Santa's Grotto- kindly supplied

by Gala Tent who lent us one of their new Grotto gazebos for the event (which we adapted for indoor use!)

Ensemble; Dylan and Michelle Shaw from ‘A Shaw Thing’ (pictured bottom left) and St Peter’s Choir and Band joined us to make the event more festive with live music all through the day. Denis Birkin held the whole show together which ran without a hitch. The Alma Pub carried the live music into the evening with various bands playing into the night.

Santa and helper were Tommy Joyce and Bev Wilkes (pictured above), who delighted the children all day, along with young Kyle Phillips (picture below left)who did a fantastic job as Santa's elf. Entour put on a great show as always with suitably outrageous costumes created by Kim Clemitshaw. Chief, the dog, dressed up for the day and visited Santa (pictured below right).

Not as many visitors came to the market as previous years, partly due to the bad weather and people spreading rumours that we were going to cancel the event, but I hope those that did, appreciated all the hard work that was done by so many community minded people who made the day so successful. I am glad that I made the decision to carry on despite the weather and I appreciated all the support (and hugs)

Christmas Lights and Decorations One planned aspect of the Christmas market didn’t go as well as anticipated, partly due to the weather; poor visitor numbers and volunteers not appearing to sell tickets, was the Christmas Lights raffle. We had hoped to raise a large sum of money to go towards lighting up the street for next Christmas but only raised £24 on the day. Many thanks to all who bought tickets, many of whom won some great prizes, generously donated by local food establishments in the village and Gala Tent.

Conisbrough Library News The library continues to be run by volunteers but we desperately need additional volunteers, especially on a Wednesday and Friday lunch times. If you can spare a couple of hours please help us. No specific knowledge is required as the current volunteers will help you with all the information you require.

The big event over the Christmas period was the Street Market. The library had a couple of bric-a -brac stalls inside the building, as well as the Conisbrough & Denaby Heritage Group selling hot drinks and cakes. However like all the stalls in the street, the strong winds affected the number of people coming in and sadly visitor numbers were almost 50% down on the figures for 2014.

Mary Duff in Concert Mary Duff's singing career started when she recorded herself at the age of twelve, onto her father’s 'reel to reel' tape recorder in his absence. She didn't know how to 'erase' so her father heard her uninhibited voice when he returned. He asked her to sing that weekend with his band. She had liked singing in Church, but the 'buzz' of singing to an audience, sparked a great ambition to do this as a career.

After several years of 'fronting' her father's band, she joined a rock'n'roll band as lead singer.

This continued for several years until rock'n'roll became yesterday.

Just at this time, Daniel O'Donnell was looking for a singing partner. Mary auditioned and was contracted immediately, to sing on all of his tour shows. Last year, they celebrated twenty five years touring and singing together. This partnership has taken them both around the world many times, being recognised as 'Stars' in Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Europe, The USA and Canada.

She hails from County Meath in Ireland and is one of Ireland's best kept secrets in the UK. Mary has won many awards for her singing, including European Duettist of the year with Daniel. They have sung in many prestigious venues, including Sydney Opera House, the Royal Albert Hall, Carnegie Hall in New York and the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee.

Mary completed her first solo tour in the USA with her band in 2009. That same year, she fulfilled a lifetime ambition of recording an inspirational album "Voice of an Angel" in Prague, with a full orchestra. This album was launched in Ireland in October 2009. She also did a concert in Conisbrough, at the Ivanhoe Centre, by request of her fans. In 2010 Mary was as busy as ever, touring in Ireland, UK, Switzerland and America both as Daniel O'Donnell's special guest and on her own tours. whilst also launching her 'Voice of an Angel' album in the UK. The start of 2011 saw Mary travelling to America with the Daniel O'Donnell show to perform at the

Ryman Auditorium, home of the world famous 'Grand Ole Opry'. The show was recorded for PBS (American equivalent of our BBC), and broadcast coast to coast, with 60 million viewers. This was the eleventh of such annual recordings for PBS. She also toured other parts of America, and solo tours of Ireland, Switzerland, UK, Ireland and Australia. Again she brought her band to the Ivanhoe Centre in Conisbrough after a solo 25 shows in 29 days across Australia. In 2012 more tours with Daniel took her to New Zealand, Australia, UK and Ireland, then flew to Des Moines, Iowa, to record 2 more shows for PBS. Every year Mary is a resident singer with Daniel, doing 5 shows each week for 6 weeks in Branson, Missouri. The other annual commitment is to her Appreciation Society, where she performs 3 nights over 1 weekend in Llandudno.

Mary returned in 2013 for a third show, but due to a full year of touring with Dominic Kirwan last year, was unable to fit us in. This year she has invited two young talents to join her as Special Guests. Mary introduced us to Jordan Mogey at last year’s Llandudno weekend. He is now 22 years old with a voice beyond his years. Kathy Crinian is also in her early career and is well worth listening to.

Denaby United FC 2015 was a great year for the Denaby United 1st Team with only 2 league defeats during the whole year. We won promotion last season up to division 1 of the County Senior League, as well as winning the Doncaster FA Challenge Cup. That success has followed into the 2015/16 season and we currently sit top of the league with high hopes of promotion to the Premier Division.

The Academy side, mainly made up of players under 20, play in the Doncaster Senior League and playing against open age sides are finding it tough with good results hard to come by. Edlington Scorpion Taekwondo Success in 2015 2015 has been another outstanding year for the club.

Some of our highlights include success at the British International Championships in London in July. A small team of 11 students winning 10 medals, including 5 Golds. This helped the team win the 4th place overall team trophy, an amazing achievement as there were over 600 competitors from across Europe competing. September saw Zak Lambert become British National Champion in Manchester and Sam Fairhurst become German International Masters Champion in Bonn, Germany. The club has competed at many smaller local events throughout the year, helping Scorpion Taekwondo win many team trophies including the All Stars Open Championships at the Dome, Doncaster in June. The club has also had success with 11 students being promoted to Black Belt First Dan or higher, with a 100% pass rate at the British Taekwondo National

1950’s Women’s State Pension Inequality

pension age would have been 65 and equal to that of men.

Some women may or may not know how the changes to the State Pension Age affect them, especially as many do not use Social Media such as Twitter and Facebook and therefore may be unaware of a campaign started by a small group of women under the banner of WASPI (Women Against State Pension Inequality). They managed to instigate a debate in the House of Commons on the 7th January 2016 to which many MPs from all parties attended, our own Caroline Flint amongst them, all of whom lend their support to the issues. Their aim to force the Government to recognise and compensate those women born in the 1950’s who are hit the hardest by the changes to the State Pension Age. This in brief is who and how the changes affect those women.

There was little mention of this momentous change at the time - perhaps because the process would not start for 15 years and it would be 25 years before women had the same state pension age as men. A press cutting search of the 1990s found very few mentions of the pension age increase and those were almost exclusively in the business and money pages of broadsheet newspapers.

1950's WOMEN GIVEN JUST 2 YEARS' NOTICE OF STATE PENSION AGE RISE Millions of women had their state pension age delayed - in some cases twice and by up to six years in total - without proper notice.

That is the only conclusion to be drawn from the details of how they were informed of the changes which has now been obtained from the Department for Work and Pensions. It reveals: •The Government did not write to any woman affected by the rise in pension ages for nearly 14 years after the law was passed in 1995.

•More than one million women born between 6 April 1950 and 5 April 1953 were told at age 58 or 59 that their pension age was rising from 60, in some cases to 63 •More than half a million women born 6 April 1953 to 5 April 1955 were told between the ages of 57 and nearly 59 that their state pension age would be rising to between 63 and 66.

•Some women were told at just 57½ that their pension age would rise from 60 to 66.

•Women were given five years less notice than men about the rise in pension age to 66 •The Government now says that in future anyone affected by a rise in state pension age must have ten years' notice. None of these women had that much notice nor did the men affected by the change.

Rising age The first increase in women's state pension age was introduced by the Pensions Act 1995. The change would not start until April 2010 and would take ten years to complete. By 6 April 2020 women's state

The women affected were then aged 40 to 45. It is understandable that many of them, even if they read the newspapers, would have put it in the 'too far away to worry about' box.

The DWPs crucial and damning admission is that it did not write a letter about the change to any woman affected for nearly 14 years after the Act was passed.

Worst affected The very worst affected were the 300,000 women born between 6 December 1953 and 5 October 1954 who faced that maximum extra 18 month rise in their state pension age. We know now that they were first written to about the changes between the ages of 57 years 5 months and 58 years 1 month before they reached 60, giving them just 22 to 30 months to rearrange their lives.

Among that group too some had worked out that their state pension age had already been raised once.

They were told between five and half and seven years before their state pension date that a further change would push it another 18 months into the future - in all cases to beyond 65 and for some as late as 66.

It is important not to forget another group, some of whom got very little notice that their state pension age would be 66. They are the women born from 6 October 1954 to 5 April 1960. Most of these women only heard about the changes at the age of 56 or 57, two or three years before they expected to reach state pension age at 60. Even the very youngest got no more than six years' notice.

The WASPI campaign covers the women affected born up to the end of 1959. It is seeking transitional compensation - which it has not defined - for the whole group.

Conclusion The DWP failed to inform millions of women about the changes to their state pension age until a year or two before they were 60. It gave inadequate notice

Coffee Morning at The Old Rectory, Braithwell

Our village church is holding a Gift Day to raise funds to purchase much needed land for burials. The present graveyard is diminishing quickly which will have an adverse effect on those wishing to be buried within the Parish.

Our coffee morning in December raised £118 and on January 20th our coffee morning raised £123 towards the upkeep of St James Church, Braithwell. On a cold but beautifully sunny morning, those attending enjoyed delicious cakes, coffee and tea, lots of chatter and laughter.

The Village Memories Group is supporting us with a display of old photographs of the Church and churchyard and providing guides during the day. One of their members, former churchwarden Thomas Best, will be giving a talk ‘Why we should love and cherish our Church’ covering significant features of the church and its history.

Refreshments will be served throughout the day.

News from Edlington Community Organisation 2015 was a whirlwind of a year for ECO with us venturing out into unknown territory to support additional communities in the South and West of Doncaster. We hope our presence has been welcomed and created a positive addition to existing community services. At ECO we have now drawn our slipper swaps to a close – thanks to everyone who has attended our events and spread the word of community support – watch us popping up again in November 2016 to deliver more swaps.

December saw us supporting the Well Doncaster Team to set up a Santa’s Grotto in the Well Denaby Office at the Springwell Centre. Eighty five children and their families hopefully had a wonderful experience and it wouldn’t have been possible without the partnership work of community organisations, statutory services and local businesses – thanks to JA’s Autos for purchasing 100 selection boxes and Sabar Homes Property Developer for purchasing hotdogs to give out to each child who attended the Grotto. Watch us popping up this year at Well Denaby to deliver a variety of craft and information sessions.

The Great War Part 17: "He Came. He Saw. He Capitulated" by Sarah Smith and Craig Jackson hristmas was not a time of rest for the British Army – certainly not in the Mediterranean.

The campaign at Salonika, which had initially promised much success, was quickly bogged down and with Bulgarian entry into the War, the British had been pushed back to the port of Thessaloniki.

architects, resigned in November 1915 (he would go onto command 6/Royal Scots on the Western Front). Asquith, the PM, was partially blamed – another crack in the armour of the already weakened government. Commander Ian Hamilton was recalled, never to serve in The Colours again.

Further west on the beaches at Gallipoli – another attempt to finally push the Allied beachhead further inland, an all too familiar story began in August 1915. After initial successes on the landing beaches, the attack floundered with missed opportunities and stubborn Ottoman resistance; the August campaign fared little better than the April landings.

The Allied plan to knock-out the “weak under-belly of the Central Powers” had failed. Under-estimation of the Ottomans, poor planning, unclear objectives, inexperience of both the Infantry and Artillery, inadequate logistics and supplies all played their part in defeat, however the seemingly political nature of the intervention was largely to blame for a campaign many believed doomed from the outset.

Kitchener, Secretary of State for War, wanting reinforcements for Salonika withdrew two British Divisions from Turkey meaning the offensive was effectively ended. This coincided with a change in the weather, the summer heat being replaced by flooding, extreme cold and blizzards – men froze to death, the troops not being adequately prepared for a winter campaign in Turkey.

The commander of the MEF Sir Ian Hamilton had been replaced in October 1915 with Lt. General Charles Monro. His wisdom against opposition from the likes of Winston Churchill and Lord Kitchener was to withdraw from the Gallipoli peninsular – a very bold act considering the opposition. Churchill would say of Monro “He came, He saw, He capitulated”.

Estimation for casualties ranged around 20,000 for the withdrawal operation – the evacuation started on 7 Dec 1915 and lasted for a month and one day.

This retreat was without doubt the best executed operation of the entire Gallipoli campaign using a combination of skill, planning and ingenuous thinking to outwit the Ottomans. Examples such as self-firing rifles - developed by L/Cpl William Scurry, using two tins and rain water - allowed a ruse to be created in which the troops silently slipped away.

By daybreak on 8 Jan 1916 35,000 troops had been embarked onto ships along with 1,600 tons of equipment; anything left behind was destroyed.

This remarkable operation is a largely forgotten action of the War. The political consequences of the campaign then took centre stage. Churchill, one of the key

In 1854, the first major engagement of the Crimean War took place. The reason for the Crimean War is difficult for me to explain in such a small space. At first read of information it seemed to be a religious war, but religion was just an excuse. The Alma was a river that runs into the Dead Sea and this was the area where the battle took place. The fighting was between British, French and Turkish troops and the Imperial Russian Army. The British Army had 26,000 Infantry, 1,000 Cavalry (Light Brigade) and 60 guns.

The French Army 28,000 Infantry and 72 guns, no Cavalry and the Turkish Army 7,000 Infantry no Cavalry and an unknown number of guns. The Russian Army consisted of 33,000 Infantry, 3,400 Cavalry and 120 guns.

This would lead us to believe that the Alma Beerhouse opened about the time of the battle, who

knows. The earliest photo we have was taken about 1905, the beer being sold was made at Nicholsons Brewery on Sheffield Road but the Beerhouse by then had a sign The Alma Inn. The family living there at the time was the Moody family.

In January 1966 fans invade the pitch when Kiveton Park visit Tickhill Square, Conisbrough is placed on a black list of smokeless zone, and an eight-year-old has all his teeth knocked out and his nose broken in a fairground accident. The year 1956 starting with “Aladdin” at Denaby Baths, Denaby fruitcakes with an international reputation, a film show by Johnny Wardle at Station Road School and a pack of howling dogs plaguing Conisbrough.

In January 1946 Conisbrough agreed to buy the Castle for £25, there’s a B.E.M. for a Conisbrough headmaster and more soldiers return from service; including a sergeant who returned to his garage business on Doncaster Road and a leading Stoker engaged in minesweeping in the Mediterranea.

King George V, the King who visited Conisbrough Castle and the Cadeby disaster, passed away in January 1936. Gordon Clark the 20-year-old full-back is transferred from Denaby United to Manchester City and Conisbrough Cricket Club celebrate an excellent playing and financial year.

A 23-year-old miner is killed by a fall of roof in Denaby “Deep” in January 1926. The home carting scheme attracted visitors to Conisborough’s Ferry Farm and a patient with scarlet fever escaped from the isolation hospital and cycled to Doncaster.

A Denaby family receive compliments from the King on having five sons in the services in January 1916. A picture of a ‘happy band’ of sappers from Conisborough include Tom Hill. More deaths from the front, including a Conisborough Boer War veteran, and a Denaby miner shot by a sniper. A Conisborough sapper is gassed and a Denaby private blinded, after only two weeks at the front.

In January 1906 a woman’s body is found in a pond near the Bone Mills and a 19-year-old journeyman painter was electrocuted at Cadeby Main. Mr and Mrs Ogley of Hilltop house made a 20 day return, sailing voyage to Cairo, witnessing Stromboli in eruption. Three young pony drivers are prosecuted for playing at ‘hanging’ with signal wires at Denaby Main.

By today’s norm, there were strange cases in January 1896; A man charged with being drunk in charge of a horse and hansom cab at Denaby, loses two rugs and prosecutes a new Conisborough woman with stealing them; two men are charged with ‘talking’ instead of working at Cadeby Main. Then there was the Conisborough young men who were fined for kissing and annoying railway passengers and the lively meeting of the Parish Council discussing gas lighting at Burcroft.

In January 1886 a 14 year old horseman is punished for obstructing the footpath; a manservant hired at £9 a year, is fined £2 for leaving his job after a month, and told to go back or he would be summoned again! Conisbrough Community Library Short Story Competition Winner: Open Age 17+ Category

School Report by Claire Hinchliffe Jamie was not looking forward to going home from school. In his school bag he carried his yearly school report and it did not make for good reading.

Jamie much preferred kicking a football or swinging a cricket bat rather than to study too much at school and though not a bad lad he was also known to get involved in the odd bout of boisterous behaviour with his mates. Having been made to sit through couple of detentions over the last few months however, his parents, especially his dad, would be livid with the contents of the report and Jamie knew that it would cut no ice to try and offer any flimsy excuses as to why his school report was so poor. Jamie was kicking his heels and pondering how he might explain himself before he decided to visit Grandma on the way home, “perhaps she might be able to help” he told himself.

Jamie was a regular visitor to his Grandma and she would always give him a cup of hot chocolate and a slice of her home made chocolate cake. Her cake was the best he’d ever tasted and as he sat enjoying this snack he plucked up the courage to explain why he’d made this particular visit.

“Grandma” he said “I need your help. Take a look at my school report and help me explain this to my dad”. Taking the report from Jamie and removing it from the envelope, Grandma read it studiously, without at any time offering criticism of its contents, though of course Jamie knew full well that she would feel some disappointment in what she was reading. After all Jamie was her only grandchild and she wanted so much for him to do well at school. After finishing reading the report Grandma asked Jamie to excuse her for a moment while she went and got something from her bedroom. Coming back a short time later Grandma removed Jamie’s report from the school envelope and unbeknown to Jamie replaced it with another document before telling Jamie “I don’t think you have anything to worry about, I’m sure your dad

will understand”.

Leaving Grandma’s house Jamie didn’t feel too confident that his dad would be as understanding as his Grandma thought, but he made his way home and ten minutes later Jamie arrived at his front door and rather sheepishly went inside where he saw both his mum and dad waiting. They knew that the school report would be sent home with their son on this day “Well let’s have it Jamie” said dad, also called Jamie, asking for the report and with some trepidation young Jamie handed the envelope over. As soon as his Dad set his eyes on it Jamie could see the change of his facial expression as a sense of expectation turned to something approaching anger.

“What’s the meaning of this” said Jamie’s Dad reading aloud.

“Maths, fails to understand basic arithmetic” “English, hand writing and grammar leaves a lot to be desired” “Science, using a Bunsen burner to burn your initials on a work bench is not a suitable science experiment” “Music, needs to understand that a recorder is not an African pygmy’s blowpipe” “General behaviour, always goes too far with his practical jokes and never knows when to stop” “Ah, Sports and Games, something you have applied yourself to”. “A very athletic young man who excels in most sports especially football and cricket” his Dad said.

While all this was happening, young Jamie’s Mum was listening intently, having some concerns over what she was hearing with Dad continuing to read from what was a truly disappointing record of the school year. “If you think this is good enough then think again my lad. There will be no season ticket for City this next year and you can forget about me taking you to watch England at cricket next month.

as I’m concerned you can expect to be grounded for all the summer holidays and you will spend your time studying to catch up.”

“Oh Jamie” said Mum to her husband with a worried tone to her voice “let me have a look.”

Taking hold of the report Jamie’s Mum read it for herself while young Jamie was further castigated by his dad who ranted on somewhat about wasting his education. “You’ll struggle to get a decent job” said dad. “I had such high hopes that you would make something of yourself” he went on, reacting in a manner that Jamie had expected but rather hoped would not happen.

It took a few minutes for Jamie’s Mum to complete reading the report and Jamie was surprised to see a smile form up on her face though this went unseen by Jamie’s Dad. “What had tickled Mum” thought Jamie.

“Jamie” said Mum to her husband, “have you read this report from start to finish” “Of course I have” said Jamie’s Dad “what do you take me for?”

“Well” said Mum “you will no doubt have noticed that this report is dated from almost 20 years ago and is addressed to your mum and has your name on it, so instead of being a record of our Jamie’s school year it is instead a record of your final school year. So perhaps young Jamie is more like his dad than we ever thought and you didn’t turn out too badly did you” The look of embarrassment that Jamie saw on his Dad’s face as he realised that he’d reacted so badly to his own report rather than to his son’s was so funny to see.

“Well perhaps we might go to watch the Cricket after all” said Dad rather sheepishly.
